Awesome!! ChuckThis should go down as one of the best redistribution
attack strategy for the Lab.Are you going to post in on your

Subject: CCIE Practice Labs - Redustribution Strategies [7:66306]
Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2003 04:45:47 GMT

For the past couple of weeks I've been whacking out various CCIE practice
labs. I've also been suffering various degrees of euphoria and depression,
depending upon how badly I was suckered by the redistribution problems.

After a particularly long and frustrating day with the Cisco ASET Lab #1,
it
suddenly occurred to me that there are many ways to do things, and for some
reason, I've been overlooking what may be the best way to deal with
redistribution.

Those of you who have worked these practice labs know how it goes. You read
through the lab, then you start configuring.

Step 1 - set up OSPF
Step 2 - set up RIP
Step 3 - redistribute between OSPF and RIP
Step 4 - set up EIGRP
Step 5 - redistribute between EIGRP and RIP
Step 6 - set up IS-IS
Step 7 - redistribute between IS-IS and OSPF
Step 8 - scream in anguish as you discover that your routing tables have
turned to trash and half your network becomes unreachable.

ASET #1 was particularly nasty in how it accomplished Step 8

Which brings me to the topic of this post. CCIE's and folks who've been
through the Lab without success - what do you think of this approach:

1) do NOT do any redistribution anyplace until all routing protocols have
been configured everywhere. Yes, I know that typically you have a section
with several steps, one of which is redistribution. But mark your place and
return after the IGPs are up and running and all routes for a particular
IGP
are where they should be.

2) return to the first redistribution task. Before configuring anything,
refer to your diagram ( you DO write out a nice diagram, don't you? ) and
ask yourself: after I do one way redistribution, what routes will appear
where?

2a) Consider how administrative distance might change things

2b) Follow the redistribution to it's extreme. For example, if you
redistribute EIGRP into OSPF, what routers will these routes end up on?
Will
there be any implications to the routing tables?

3) repeat step 2 for every redistribution point, each time considering the
totality of the contents of the redistributed routes. So if you have
redistributed IS-IS into OSPF, how do those redistributed routes flow
through the OSPF domain?

4) Keep an eye out for things like split horizon

5) every step along the way, consider what routers need to see what routes.
Watch for situations where necessary routes do not appear. ( you have
probably trashed it because of overzealous filtering. )

5) If problems occur, such as a routing loop, trace back where the problem
route came from, and see what can be done to evade the problem. Summary
routes work wonders sometimes. So do route-maps and distribute lists.

Re-reading this, I see that this topic does not lend itself well to text. I
can say with certainty that I now have a very clear vision of
redistribution
methodology. I've tested it three times now with different labs, and I
believe I am solving the redistribution problems more quickly than ever. I
hope that I have painted enough of a picture that some of you can fill in
the rest.

Re: CCIE Practice Labs - Redustribution Strategies [7:66306]

2003-03-27 Thread Thomas Larus
This may not always be an option, but I would use tagging and route-maps
instead of distribute-lists any time I can. There is just too much room for
serious, show-stopping errors, with distribute-lists. With route tagging,
you could mess up and end up with a packet taking a suboptimal path to a
destination, and you could lose some points, but the packet will get to its
destination and whatever was riding on this will probably work.

But that's just me working around my natural absent-mindedness-- taking as a
given that I will screw up the distribute lists.

More ISDN Practice Labs - You gotta see this one [7:66056]

hint - one side uses a dialer watch for an interface that is on a frame
relay link ( physical interface )
the other side uses a backup interface tracking a frame relay link.

So if R1 no longer sees the OSPF route for R2's frame, it tries to dial.

So sorry, but since R2 has backup interface in place, which disables the
dialer interface, it will not take R1's call.

Real well thought out. Wonder how the Proctors would grade this one?

Good night, everyone

I'd like to run through a couple labs just to get a little more familiar
with the software.

Thanks
John

Hey there.

I have access to a 65xx,55xx and another layer2.

I wish to try my hands on sample labs and practice some stuff. I have

i don't recommand the boson network simulation, it's full of bugs.sad
stuff, and offers no indepth configuration capabilities, so you can't have
fun.
the cim's of cisco are OK, a bit more i guess, but the only i don't like is
that you are stuck to predefined lab, so you can't have a lot's fun either,
but the actual labs are ok, and can help you practice key points of the
simulated technologie, i have the iprouting and multiprotocol of the cisco
cims.
you can practice at r1r2.com it's a 2 router lab with 3 connections
ethernet, sync, async, the good part about it is that you don't to sign up
for a time slot or what ever, just telnet to it, if a lab is available get
in and play, user:cisco password:cisco

 Why don't you do this...

 1) Organize your thoughts and create an approach concerning things you
want
 to learn and improve.
 2) Collect the information you need regarding your next Cisco exam. You
may
pick up two subjects at once (routing switching).
 3) Read the blueprint of your next exam and make sure that you know -
theoretically - what each one means and its basic concepts. Would be
really
nice if you knew the command syntax also.

Once finished, email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'll share my home
lab
with you. I can't offer you an excellent stuff, even though I don't have
a
great cisco lab. This is what've got on so far:

 - 4 Cisco 2501
 - 2 Cisco 2502
 - 1 Cisco 2523
 - 2 Catalyst 2916 with modules supporting ISL/dot1q
 - 1 Catalyst 1900

With all this you can practice a lot of things, but I will not be able to
help you on remote access subjects. I think it's better than nothing. You
access it once or twice, prior taking the exam.. so you can play a lot and
become familiar with the environment. This will help you for your
examination. Do you know what I mean? You play it, online.

Other options are www.networkforce.com, www.ccprep.com. But you will have
to
 pay for it.

Let me know what you think.

If you are a Cisco customer, you can contact your Cisco reps, who can give
you info about the free labs that Cisco offers. These are internet / web
based. For the CCNP level of study, there are quite a few that are helpful.

I have used the Sybex virtual trainer, which was OK for Routing but not
so helpful for BCRAN. I haven't used the other two subjects yet. You
should note that it is designed to accompany the Sybex books, so if you
are not buying those then it is less helpful. If you are cash-strapped
and want a couple of routers to practise with, then 3000 series are very
cheap on eBay. I have seen these running IOS 12.0 2500 images, you'll
probably need to upgrade the flash/RAM. If you're unemployed, don't try
to pass well, try to pass quickly. Good luck.

I know the ccbootcamp labs are quite beefy from what I remember a few

CCIE Lab Study Materials - including 3550 labs [7:59683]

2002-12-21 Thread The Long and Winding Road
Appears to be freely available. At least, I found the link after a google
search on Bruce Caslow, found a link to the study site, and was able to
download these with no problems. Authored by the good folks at netmasters /
netcraftsmen, some of whom we know as Caslow, Pavlichenko, and Inghram, good
folks all.

http://www.netmasterclass.net/site/lib.php

Also - don't forget the for-profit folks - NLI / b.o.o.t.c.a.m.p, Lamer
Networks, various auctions on you know where, IP Expert, Hello Computers,
Gett Labs, and of course Cert Zone, where my own materials for which I was
paid are available.

Don't forget to take some time for yourselves and for your families and
friends these next couple of weeks!

Virtual Labs [7:58692]

2002-12-06 Thread J M
Having just passed the written I have begun practicing for the LAB which i
have scheduled for Febuary. I have a practice lab consisting of
2 2621
1 3640
5 mc3810 (fxs,bri,fxo,channelized T1)
1 3550

I was interested if anyone has had success with any of the virtual labs such
as skylabs or ccrouters or any others. Why do they at times vary in price so
much and is it an accurate enough simulation or the real thing.

Thank you for any shared experiences.

 Folks

I have a question that hopefully can lead to me receiving some good
 advice.

Back in June (Just before I was laid off) I took and passed the CCIE
security written exam. Since then I have been unsuccessfully seeking
 employment.

Due in part to the cost, I have chosen not to book the lab yet and
probably wont until I am back in work. Which leads me (finally :-) to my
 question.

Would it be worthwhile to study for and take the routing and switching
qualification exam and/or perhaps even a communications and services
exam too (maybe the voice beta when it is released).

Does anyone have any experience of how much commonality there is between
 the exam materials?

Also, following on from that, how about the labs. Assuming I find myself
back in employment in the not too distant future and can manage to
afford it, would it be worth practicing for two or more CCIE labs at the
same time and then booking the labs back to back (or at least close
 together)?

 I have a reasonable home lab that includes 3x2500, 3x4500, a 2600, a
 3600, 2xMC3810, a 7500, 2xPix501 and cat 2820, etherswitch 2200 and 3920
(yeah,I purchased the last 2 a couple of months before the lab equipment
changes were announced). So with the addition of a 3550 EMI (or 2 :- eek
$$$) and some remote lab time I think I should be able to prepare for
the lab exam(s) for any of the above.

The real question is should I go ahead and go for multiple CCIE certs at
once or is this just a really foolish idea.

 Thanks

I am well aware of exactly what having passed the CCIE qualification

written. I posted my opinions on this about june/july.

I know I dont have a CCIE yet. That isnt the issue. Right now I just
cant take the lab exam as I plain cant afford it and my lab is in
storage so I cant practice anyway. In fact right now my cisco skills are
getting rusty as I havent even had any cisco hands on since July.

 If you're looking for
resume boosters, either bite the bullet and take the CCIE Lab, or maybe go
for some of the CCIP certs instead.

Resume boosters arent the issue. I already have CCNP, CCIP, CCDP, CSS1,
CIPTSS from cisco and am a CISSP and CCSE. I am trying to keep myself
sane by making what productive use I can of a very unwelcome excess of
free time right now (unemployment really sucks!!!)

In the next few weeks I will probably study for the MPLS and EVODD exams
and may perhaps even try for the Packet Telephony exam and IP telephony
troubleshooting exam.

I could also, as I originally stated try to pass an additional CCIE
qualification exam (RS or CS-Voice) or two. I sent the question so I
could hopefully receive advice as to whether or not this was a stupid
idea and also, to find out what people thought about having multiple lab
exams outstanding. I.E. Once I find myself in a position where I can
afford to take the lab(s), should I treat them seperately and work
towards them one at a time, or try to work towards them all at the same
time (on the basis of a lot of common material in the different labs).

(Again, sorry about the acidic response...people putting CCIE Written on
their resumes *really* bugs me, and it sounds like what you're doing.
 Hopefully I'm wrong. :-)

You are ;-)))

Peter,
Very well put, I think that you should try to go for the VOICE-Support
certification, the material is very helpful for
your preparation to the lab (eventually when you have a job or the money to
do it), the reason is because you will have to do some QOS and VOICE as well
in the lab but in addition to what I said before learning QOS is really
great and very but very helpful. Yes not having a job really sucks but
believe it or not there are many people out there with the same level of
skills that you have without a job and still looking. By working on some of
these certification you are using your free

The voice blueprint and test are not available yet. I heard from Cisco
that the exam is planned to go into beta this month though.

As for the lab, it will only test a common body of knowledge. This is
all explained on the CCIE pages on Cisco.com

I am looking for some cool places in NYC, which have
build labs to practice for ccie candidates. I have
checked couple of places but all they offer are,
classes and some hours for practicing. I don't want to
take classes, just want to get hold of a lab and
practice hands on. (No virtual labs)
I thought to check over groupstudy, since many of you

 Thanks!

All,

The feedback I got from Cisco about this is as follows

Although other Voice certification options are being discussed, the only
related exam currently in production is the IP Telephony, which will
concentrate on the Enterprise. The IP Telephony exam will begin beta in
November.

This is one of the various written option for CCIE CS. Keep in mind that
lab remains the same regardless of which written you pass for CS and
hopefully when you pass nothing points out which written you have manage
to pass.

Multiple CCIE qualification exams then labs? [7:57019]

2002-11-06 Thread
Also posted at www.@!#$.com (apologies to readers of both)

Thanks

CCIE Practice Labs? [7:50987]

2002-08-08 Thread Jason Viera

I apologize in advance if this topic frequents the study group, but I was
wondering what peoples' opinions are on the different practice labs for sale
out there. I have heard good things about the IPEXPERT Lab book, as well as
the labs from CCBOOTCAMP. I have been going through the CCIE Practical
studies book, as well as reading the Command configuration and reference
guides off of TAC, not to mention all of the other books(CASLOW,etc.) Can
anyone provide me with any insight or direction? Thanks in advance

RE: Voice of IP / Frame-Relay and remote labs [7:48947]

2002-07-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am not a VOIP expert but this is just an idea based on my other job and
one at which I have lots of unplanned experience with.

From my experience with running data over analog lines, I would say an
analog modem is probably the best option.

Modems are extremely sensitive to noise / etc on a analog link. They pick up
things that our humans ears cannot.
If there is noise you can hear the modem(s) renegotiating to a lower level
which means you could use the speed at which the modems connect to judge the
quality of the call. If the modem connect speed is say 28K, then you already
know there is noise on the line. If the call completes with a 48K connect
speed, then you have good voice quality.

I say this because our PABX got hit by lightning once, and although the main
boards got replaced ... I told the PABX techie, that I could hear a slight
noise in the background when I was making calls. The noise was not there
before. Of course, he listened and told me it was normal. Then the proof
came. Every modem in the company which was connected to PABX extension could
not make calls. You could hear the modem renegotiating at least three times
before an acceptable transfer rate was set, which was 21Kbps instead of the
48Kbps we were used to. So I use that as a standard to judge line quality.

Of course you use the debug commands to see at what speeds the modems are
connecting at

Just an idea.

Voice of IP / Frame-Relay and remote labs [7:48947]

2002-07-16 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

I am about to start studying Voice topics for the CCIE lab

How does one test that a call has actually been placed succesffuly when
doing remote-labs? Or maybe this is not possible and you actually have to
buy the gears to see the stuff working ...

I bet you would neeed some type of robot to pickup the phone (just
kidding).

Hi Alex,

Here is what you do:
Hook up a modem to the router's voice port. Then hook the serial
interface of the modem to the aux interface of that same router / or to
another line on the termserver.

That way a user can have console access to the modem and will visually
see a
RING on the screen.

OT: Practice ccie labs in NYC? [7:46363]

Hi,

I am looking for some cool places in NYC, which have
build labs to practice for ccie candidates. I have
checked couple of places but all they offer are,
classes and some hours for practicing. I don't want to
take classes, just want to get hold of a lab and
practice hands on. (No virtual labs)
I thought to check over groupstudy, since many of you
are studying for ccie and may know about a cool lab in
nyc.

Thanks!

Does anyone know about any free routing labs to confiugreo
 n your home
routers? No simulators, or rack time. I am looking for a
 free or low
priced routing lab practice. I know about fatkid.com. I
  don't want to pay
$300,$650. etc. I am sure there is something out there to
  help us poor
  Cisco students. Thanks.

RE: Free Home routing moch labs?? [7:38943]

2002-03-20 Thread Mike Sweeney

I would suggest the Cisco Academy series of books. The labs are pretty good
for practice up to CCNP level. CCIE practice can be found with the All in
ONe CCIE Lab Study Guide book.

I for one have been translating and testing the semester 5-6 labs to my
rental rack.. in other words, you can pick up the semester 5 book, go to my
site, rent the rack and get a diagram that maps the rack to the lab in the
book and the results will be the same.

Best labs to prepare for CCIE? [7:35045]

2002-02-10 Thread Ryn

Hello folks,

Are there any white papers or books with detailed labs? I would like some
complex labs with answers. Any recommendations? I think this would be
a great start and hopefully awaken me to things I have not seen in the field.

Thanks,
Ryan

The

Boson has always provided excellent learning aids for the other Cisco

want
