RE: CID exam - 640-025 [7:65139]

2003-03-12 Thread Skarphedinsson Arni V.
I passed it three weeks ago, no to hard

I uesd the Top Down Network Design book, it´s a great book, but I actuly
just got through half of it before the exam.

it´s not that hard, and I took the CCDA, the old version after the CID and i
would say the cid is a little harder, and not as boring i.e. does not
contain case study´s like the ccda.

2003-03-12 Thread ccnp ccnp2002
Hi,

I have done that exam today and passed barely. This after I failed barely
last week.

I used great books (because I like great books!).

1. Top Down Network Design - Priscilla Oppenheimer.
2. Cisco Internetwork Design - Mathew Birkner.
3. Boson Test #1 Practice Test.

These resources will take you through, but you have to read the questions
carefully, because two answers look almost alike (to the
uninitiated!)that is when I realized the difficulty of this exam for
someone without networking experience.

Tim/Shawn,

In regards to the CID 640-025 exam...I have heard rumors that AT and IPX
have been somewhat removed as well? The current exam objectives on CCO
would indicate this, but like others, I doubt Cisco's honesty on their
exam objectives a bit. Can you confirm or deny this rumor of AT & IPX
being removed from the DP exam? Thanks.

RE: CID exam 640-025 [7:57268]

2002-11-12 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G
You have to be careful here because Cisco likes to add (to their blueprints)
the famous "The following topics are general guidelines for the content
likely to be included on the Cisco Internetwork Design exam. However, other
related topics may also appear on any specific delivery of the exam." I
haven't heard of any SNA showing up on the CID exam, but sometimes I find it
hard to trust Cisco when it comes to the exams! :-)

No SNA on the blueprint means no SNA on the test. I took it a few months ago

Dan,

My first e-mail to the CID practice test users informing them of the
changes is dated March 1, 2002. That must be the approximate date that
the CID objectives changed. Good luck with the exam.
This exam is still tricky and you must read the questions very
carefully.

And, sir, why do you call it Applecrap? ;-) Seriously, can you provide some
technical reasons to disparage it?

Perhaps it's still on Cisco tests because the philosophies behind AppleTalk
had a big impact on modern desktop protocol design. Also, many universities
and schools of all sorts still have large AppleTalk networks. You would be
surprised at how many still use it. It's also still used at scientific and
graphics arts companies.

Many protocol designers admire the pioneering work that Apple did to make
networks plug and play. There's a new IETF working group called the Zero
Configuration Networking group that credits AppleTalk. See here for more info:

http://www.zeroconf.org/

Note that IPv6 has serverless autonegotiation of network-layer addresses
which behaves quite a bit like AppleTalk. (It probably won't catch on in
many environments which have a DHCP server, but it may catch on in other
environments). And how about Microsoft's automatic addressing. (Of course we
normally only see that when DHCP has failed, but still Microsoft thought
enough of the AppleTalk mechanism to steal it. ;-)

And how about service location? TCP/IP barely even has service location,
still to this day. Don't you think it's a little silly that we have to find
resources with a search engine? There is hope with new protocols like the
Service Location Protocol (SLP) and some of the new multicast protocols that
let you find multicasting servers. Note that the SLP RFC credits AppleTalk.

Maybe some "expert" told you that AppleTalk is "chatty." For one thing, any
protocol that tries to automate service location, speed up routing protocol
convergence, and quickly workaround connection disconnects is going to be a
bit chatty. It's a tradeoff. AppleTalk is no more chatty than Windows
Networking or IPX. And you want chatty, how about all those keepalives and
hellos that Cisco routers send?

Maybe that same "expert" told you to avoid AppleTalk because it broadcasts
too much. That's a myth. It uses multicasts, for one thing, which means a
decent NIC driver that doesn't do AppleTalk shouldn't bother the host.

The descriptions you see about Chooser behavior are mostly nonsense. The
Chooser doesn't send broadcasts. It sends broadcast requests which are
forwarded (as unicasts) to each router in the zone. Those routers send a
multicast onto their networks in the zone. With good network design, this is
no problem.

The Chooser doesn't send continually unless the user leaves it open with a
zone and service highlighted, which is almost never the case. Then it does
send rather often, but backs off after 45 seconds. The problem where it sent
the broadcast request packets (which are really unicasts) very often,
without backing off, was fixed in 1989. By then, it was too late. The
criticism of its behavior (even though already based on misinformation) was
entrenched in people's minds.

Hey, I could go on and on, but I'll stop here, you'll be glad to see. ;-)

I took the new exam about 6 weeks ago and didn't see any SNA questions
and it is not listed on the exam objectives page.

Although SNA is said to have been removed, the feedbacks that I receive
daily, tell me otherwise.
There are indeed SNA questions in the new CID exam. I am sure these are
the questions that Cisco has failed to remove from the database
completely, but they show up in the real life exams anyway, and you
should be aware of that.

You may certainly bypass AppleTalk, IPX and Stratacom questions when
practicing for the CID exam, but please do not discount SNA questions
yet.

Here is the URL to the new CID objectives:

Hi

I took exam on 04/01 (this Monday). No questions were about SNA, AT. But i
could find
some questions were from DeskTop protocol design and lots from WAN. I took
the same
exam on 01/02, that time lots of questions from SNA. Recently exam duration
is about 90
Minutes (last time 120 Minutes - 100 questions) 75 questions.

Hope above helps. All the best.

Top Down is a great book for DCN, but it's not really
for the CID. I'll go out on a limb and suggest mine (
;) ). Sybex CID Study Guide. To save a buck, if you
feel comfortable with the material, you may want to
forgo the big book and use the Exam Notes (used books
are out there too). The new test might focus on
multicast more than the books reflect, and they may
have less StrataCom and ATM, but its close enough.
640-025 (the exam the book was written to) is still
the current version.

Good luck.

give you a hard time also for lack of accuracy. ;-)

Top-Down Network Design is not a certification book, but it is based on the
work I did on both the Designing Cisco Networks (DCN) and the Cisco
Internetwork Design (CID) training classes when I worked for Cisco.

I have heard that Cisco has made CID match my Top-Down Network Design book
even more closely than before. I know for a fact that the description of
the CID course is taken from my Top-Down Network Design book. I did a
double-take when I read the following text from the description of the CID
class here:
http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/front.x/wwtraining/CELC/index.cgi?action=Cours
eDesc&COURSE_ID=321

"Good internetwork design recognizes a customer's requirements embody many
business and technical goals, including requirements for availability,
scalability, affordability, security, and manageability. Difficult
internetwork design choices and tradeoffs must be made when designing the
internetwork before any physical devices or media are selected.

CID covers typical internetwork design business and technical goals and
constraints. CID details the top-down design process and the importance of
using systematic methods for internetwork design. Using systematic methods
helps you, the internetwork designer, to keep pace with changing
technologies and customer requirements."

I said to myself, "Hey I wrote that. Oh yeah, I should have had a lawyer
look at my book contract. Cisco can use anything I wrote in the book.
Bummer. or maybe not??" ;-]

Priscilla,
Maybe it's time to switch publishers like Howard's. Unless your upcoming
book prevents Cisco from doing what they did to TDND's contract.
BTW - when is the next book due for release?

Top Down is a great book for DCN, but it's not really
for the CID. I'll go out on a limb and suggest mine (
;) ). Sybex CID Study Guide. To save a buck, if you
feel comfortable with the material, you may want to
forgo the big book and use the Exam Notes (used books
are out there too). The new test might focus on
multicast more than the books reflect, and they may
have less StrataCom and ATM, but its close enough.
640-025 (the exam the book was written to) is still
the current version.

Good luck.

I also took it last week, after 2/25/02, and noticed no changes from the
objective list prior to the date that you have stated. While there are some
changes on the objectives listed on the website, now, ATM & ATM LANE are
still mentioned as objective categorys.

The CID exam was recently updated. The new objectives are on the web
site.
The SNA and extensive ATM coverage is gone. Also Appletalk, IPX, DLSW,
are gone as well.

The exam is 90 minutes long with 75 questions and the passing score is
755.

The Cisco Press CID study guide is OK but the CID exam guide is
terrible. They both have extensive SNA coverage, but like I said, is not
part of the exam any longer.

I highly recommend the Top-Down Network Design book as the new CID
guide. Besides being a great book, it has all that you'll need for the
CID exam provided you are a CCNP.

In my opinion, the new CID exam is not anymore difficult than the CCNP
exams.

Good luck to you.

Hello all

I am just about to take the CID exam but i dont know
whixh exam to take. Cisco in the web side gives the
CID 3 as the 640-025 exam, but on the tracking system
640-025 is not valid and is replaced by the 640-520.

I went to my local exam center and they could not
locate the 640-520 exam and they said that the only
valid wxam is the 640-025 which is not valid according
to the tracking system.

Based on the above I dont know what to do. In
case i take the 640-025, will be valid or i will need
to take the 640-520?

Any feedback on the above will be appreciated.

RE: CID exam [7:28668]

2001-12-10 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

The 640-025 is still a valid exam towards your CCDP. The 640-520 is supposed
to replace the 640-025, however, I'm not sure when. The 641-520 beta was
quite a while ago but I don't think Cisco liked the results, which is
probably why it's taking so long to put out the replacement 640-520 exam.
They're probably re-writing it again. So, take the 640-025 exam because it
is still valid towards your CCDP and because the 640-520 is still not
available. Plus, this exam is a beast and it's better that you take the
640-025 because there are currently good study guides available for it. If
you wait for the 640-520, there will be new material covered and there won't
be any decent study guides available for a while.

RE: CID Exam on Wednesday 11/21/01 [7:26486]

2001-11-16 Thread Scott Nawalaniec

Darren,

I have to say the CID is by the hardest Cisco test I have taken to date.
Boson is a great choice for a practice exam. Some areas to focus on are
x.25, AppleTalk, split horizon, SNA, and IOS versions of released features.
I can't get into more detail, but I hope this helps.

Darren,

I personally took the CID beta a while ago and I'm not sure if they made it
into the new exam.. I personally thought the CID beta was harder than the
CCIE written and just as encompassing. Nowhere near as bad on rif type
stuff though.

to focus my studying on or other tools to use?

Simple pre-sales level stuff on 'stratacom' is all I remember having to
know. Number of slots, backplane, etc. You will do better in your search
on CCO if you search 'wan switching' instead of stratacom.

As usual, pay special attention to anything that has been EOL for a couple
of years now ;-)

Here's a link for stuff that I used when I took the exam. It covered all of
the stuff I ran into on the exam.

http://cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/wanbu/8_5/switch/sys/sysmpt01.htm

As an alternative, Chapter 9 of Cisco WAN Quick Start (ISBN 157870104X)
summarizes all of that info in a more readable format. This book is also
good for information on ATM, Frame-Relay, and some info on digital voice.

Yeah, I am not sure exactly how much is covered in the exam ,but Robert's
book has 3 pgs on stratacoms and cisco press CID has 2 paragraphs... Not
too sure how much stratacom questions are on the exam since Cisco Press has
decided to print out only 2 paragraph worth...

Stratacoms are complex equipment so I am assuming that for now Cisco only
wants you to know what they are and some general stuff about it.

I plan on taking it at the end of the month or early next month so I can
talk more about it then.

Yes, my CID text does address the StrataCom, however,
I recommend that readers augment this material with
CCO. It appears that the test has altered a few
questions since the last publication and it would be
easiest to bolster the Cisco material as opposed to
try and keep up with the errata for each change.
Specifically, I would suggest that readers pay
attention to the type and quanity of ports available
on the platforms - although these questions seem silly
as one can quickly go to CCO and look it up. ;)

Just passed this exam last week. No VPN,No Qos, Voip
nothing. All stuff covered in CID Cisco press book.
Only Stratacom stuff is not covered but it is more
thna enough in Robert Padjen CID book. Very poorly
worded exam and most of the questions didnt make much
sense to me. I just hung around and passed with 820.
No clue how!!By the way same situation when I sat
for CCDA where case studies didnt make much sense but
passed with 900. So just go there and take ur time and
eliminate wrong answers, dont try even to find the
right answer!!!I dont know when Cisco is going to make
it a fair exam.

my 2 cents

Re: CID exam --How tough [7:17316]

2001-08-30 Thread K Paré

Hi, I just wrote the CID and passed. It was a bit difficult in that you
can't just memorize commands. I used the CID book and Boson tests. The exam
had very little in common with the Boson tests so don't rush out and buy
them!

I would put some extra attention to the design considerations and advantages
and disadvantages of various design options in WAN, desktop protocols,
routing, SNA, etc. Pay careful attention to what the question is asking for
in that there is frequently more than one multiple choice answer which on
its own would be considered a true statement but in the context of the
question doesn't exactly answer that is true but only one of the answers
actually answers the question.

Good luckKev

Your book is fine, give it a fast read including the appendix. Not a lot of
design questions on the test. A good solid cross section of everything is on
the test. I took it on July 24th, 755 was passing at that time. Review SNA
and the Stratosphere line. Good luck

Augment the Sybex book with Cisco Web information on
the StrataCom platforms - capabilities, protocols,
etc. It might be worth five-percent of your interests.
Otherwise, assuming that you've taken the CCNP and DCN

Re: CID Exam (640-025)

2001-01-17 Thread Robert Padjen

Typically there seems to be a six month delay from the
end of a beta to the retirement of a test, but there
is no rule. The new CID test (beta) was very bad and I
hope Cisco takes some time to correct it before its
release. The old test was poor, but was at least
managable. Good luck.

RE: CID exam Information Wanted

2000-09-26 Thread McCallum, Robert

As Chuck has suggested. Read all questions carefully. This will be the
most obscure exam you will probably sit to date. Make sure you study hard
and give this exam more respect than any of the CCNP exams. Good luck.
P.S. you can go back so mark the dodgy questions and go back at the end.

RE: CID exam Information Wanted

2000-09-24 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Read all questions carefully. Don't be discouraged by the couple of
questions for which there is no right answer. Concentrate on protocol
behaviors as determined by Cisco - TCP, routing protocols, desktop - meaning
netbios and IPX, with maybe a smattering of Appletalk. Those three areas
cover 75% of the test. The SNA, design methodology, and stratecom areas
cover the rest.

You have LOTS of time. Two hours for 100 questions. If you need more than 75
minutes, you weren't ready for the test. You can mark and go back.

Best of luck.

Chuck

Re: CID Exam Question

2000-09-22 Thread Kevin Wigle

I don't think that it's a question of "whatever a client wants to
support"..

It's more like, this stuff is out there in legacy systems and they use Cisco
stuff so you should know it if you bump into it.

That's why there's still a lot of Token Ring in the CCIE, not many implement
it for new networks but there's still a lot of it out there.

CID Exam QuestionYeah, it's in there, IPX more than Apple.
Cisco wants to support what ever a client wants to transport, it's that old

Because of that philosophy, Cisco wants you, as a Cisco certified

If you pass CID and DCN then you have a pretty good start towards the CCIE
written. Most of the written exam is conceptual, as opposed to knowing
commands and such. But i would suggest some intensive additional study b4
taking the written.

Passing score: 65% 100 questions 2 1/4 hours time limit

I don't think this question asks anybody to violate the NDA. She is not
asking for any specific details, only topics and test format. Cisco used to
put this information on their site in the form of "exam objectives", which
they no longer do, but not for reasons of NDA violation.

Besides, I'd like to know the answer to her questions as well as I will be
taking this exam soon myself!  ;-}

Tara,

The question you ask would violate the NDA. I can tell you that you should
prepare for everything. If you have taken the CID course the exam covers all
the subjects on that.

RE: CID exam

2000-06-01 Thread Robert Padjen

I guess I should answer. Robert Padjen is a really
nice guy who writes incredible texts on a myriad of
subjects. He also takes whatever opportunity he
can for shameless self-promotion!

The Sybex CID book that I wrote is at:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0782126391/o/qid%3D956769507/sr%3D8-1/ref%3Daps%5Fsr%5Fb%5F1%5F1/002-5146195-9236860

although it is now in Borders and on BN.com. I'm sure
FatBrain and the others have it too.

Congrats Jim! That's a great accomplishment.

Priscilla - Interesting comments. I haven't heard
about any update to the test and it isn't in the beta
track yet, so that would lead one to think we're at
least six months from a revision - likely more. I
would think that the CCIE Design will start to define
what the new exam would be like.

Re: CID exam

2000-06-01 Thread Robert Padjen

I think that most people fail to understand that the
CID exam is perhaps the most unique of the series.
There is no practicality, and, while I was
disappointed with the age of the exam, I thought that
it opened the door to the design world better than the
technical exams - routing, switching, etc. Since I
love design I went beyond these parameters and wrote
roughly 50% of the study guide (Sybex) in that vain
and added material like DSL and multicast.

I think that all of us have been frustrated with the
exams from a style, content or focus perspective from
time to time. I also know that CID is generally
regarded as a hard exam - I disagree - and a lot of
people have avoided the CCDP track from this fear.

A suggestion would be to participate in the beta
program offered by Cisco. The tests are free, and I
like to fool myself into thinking that they read the
lengthy comments that I make. My understanding is that
there is a group that reviews comments from both the
betas and the live exams, so, as long as you don't
have a time limit concern, use that avenue and
hopefully you/we can effect the certification process.

Re: CID exam

2000-06-01 Thread Wayne Smith

Jim

I'll second Brad's opinion... the CID test was *very* ambigous on a few
questions... I think test writers create questions on certain subject areas
and they know what subject areas they are pulling from when writing it, but
you don't taking the test... I had one question that was completely, 100% so
ambiguous that there was no right answer because the question hadn't been
formed yet...

That being said, I took the test on 5/31/2000 and passed. 37 minutes, 100
questions, passing score of 77% (needed 65% to pass)... Priscilla
Oppenheimer kicked my butt...

I used the Cisco Press book, Cisco Internetworking Design. I had read
Top-Down Nework Design twice last year (June) for CCDA. It would be a good
book to use for this test too.

My section scores were what they should be (SNA being my lowest, haven't
touched anything SNA in over three years now (and then it wasn't a Cisco
router ;)). If I had it to do over again, I would have spent more time on
studying SNA. It did not make up a large portion of the test by any means,
but I should have known more before taking it.

I'm sure you'll crank it through on the second try!

Wayne Smith, CNE/MCSE/CCNP/and now CCDP
