Any Linux or BSD box. I prefer OpenBSD for this task, then after
monitoring the logs manually for a few days and becoming familiar with
what is normal and what is not I setup fwlogwatch
http://cert.uni-stuttgart.de/projects/fwlogwatch/

And with this software you can tell it what to look for in the logs and
have it email you with suspect intrusions or what ever you tell it to
look for very nice.

Hi Symon, Selcuk other Cisco Buddies

thnx for your reply.

Actually we are getting logs for activities such as Status of Link , when I
change some route config .

PLS LET ME KNOW :

1. To wht extent of details can I get from router if I enable syslogging

2. If I enable Syslog , can I get details of who all tried to telnet the
router what all commands he used in the telnet session ?

3. NAT translations would be logged ?

waiting for your reply.

I think you might have to set the level of logging, perhaps by default
  it is only errors?

There are seven levels of detail, I think the most is debug, and the
  least is error.

  Try

  logging trap information

That should get you some activity (maybe too much)

  I normally set it to

  Logging trap warning

That gets you warnings (interfaces going up and down etc) and errors. It
doesn't tell you when people write the config to memory though, I think
  information level does that.

you need to add logging facilites for messages in the syslog.conf file in
/etc/

research setting up syslog.conf on google. also do a netstat -na

you should see

Active Internet connections (servers and established)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
udp0 0 0.0.0.0:514 0.0.0.0:*

Re: syslog [7:43939]

2002-05-11 Thread Ken Diliberto

The console port is a serial device which uses interrupts. Every time an
interrupt is generated, the router CPU has to stop what it's doing to see
what's going on. The internal buffer doesn't have that overhead to deal with.

That's my understanding, at least.

Ken

 Steven A. Ridder 05/11/02 10:18AM
If I debug something on a router, the messages must be generated no matter
what, so why is it less taxing on a router to send them to an internal
buffer instead of a console port?

RE: syslog [7:41165]

2002-04-12 Thread Marko Milivojevic

He's a question I've always was curious about:

If you have your linux box/unix box set up for logging, but
 you want to log
more than 7 devices with their own log file, how do you do it
 if you only
have 6-7 facilities (local0-local7) to work with in the
 syslog.conf file?!?!

 all tips and tricks appreciated.

First, if you use local0-local7, you have 8 devices available, so
that might answer you question right away. Since that's most probably not
the case:

One approach is to use facilities to log for different types of
devices. For example:

local0 - switches
local1 - routers
local2 - firewalls
local3 - ids
local4 - load balancing devices
...

This way you could have all the relevant information in separate
files. Of course, you can take more important ones out from this and use
specific facilities for them.

If you approach the problem this way, 8 facilities is not that
little.

Another approach would, of course, be smarter syslog dfmon than the
one that comes with most UNIX/Linux distributions. You could use thatto
divert entries based on content adn/or source. Any hints in this regard
would be welcome :-).

Marko.

logging trap debug ! choose different level as you desire
logging facility local1! choose different facility as you desire

On Linux box:

1. make sure that you have syslog running with -r (and -h, if desired -

This is a documented bug in the version of IOS that you are running. The
workaround is to change the source interface for syslog messages to another
interface then the one currently sending the syslog messages.

Hi,

I have a 2620 running IOS Version 12.1(5)with FW feature set running.
I am trying to send syslog to an Information Security Management tool
(Netforensics) to the standard syslog port UDP 514.
The messages arrive to the destination device, I can see them with tcpdump,
but netforensics cannot read them.
Checking more in details the packets, I see that all packets are coming with
a CRC error.
With all the other router I have, it works properly.
Does anybody already experienced that?

thanks for your input.

2001-08-08 Thread Munzir Khan

on your router type

logging buffered debug
logging (syslog server ip address)
logging history debugging
logging trap information
logging facility local07 (depanding on critics)

you could go to # mode and use logging ? and see what kind of logging you
want.

Syslog server can be found on BOSON website
try KIWI SYSLOG can be located on www.download.com

hope this would help you.

Simon,

You may want to try either Kiwi's Syslog Daemon
(http://www.kiwi-enterprises.com/) or
3com's 3CDaemon
(http://support.3com.com/software/utilities_for_windows_32_bit.htm)

They are both good Syslog servers.

Hope they help!

Re: SysLog Server for NT / 2000

2001-02-22 Thread Jim Deane

We use a product called SL4NT.

It allows me to set up rules, and based on the source IP of the syslog
message, I can send that message to different log files. So, I set up a
loopback on each router, use the "logging source-interface Loopback0"
command, and then SL4NT allows me to break each router's syslog messages out
into a different log file. SL4NT also creates a new log file each night at
midnight.

Works really well for us.

Here's the link:

No, you don't need 5 tabs. You can have just one, but the key thing
is to use just tabs, not ' ' (at least on Solaris).

Hi Tim,

FYI

Maybe you already know this, but anytime you make a change to the
syslog.conf file. You will need to restart or HUP the syslog daemon.

Also...I have seen Cisco documentation that you need 5 tabs between
local0.debug (5 Tabs) /var/log/cisco.log (not being a NMS guru - that

In the lab, trying to configure syslog.

On CCO, an example is given with the command: logging trap informational

I try this and the command is accepted but it is not visible after "sh run".

I had used "logging history information" but I think this is for SNMP

However, that command is accepted and can be seen after "sh run".

The router is a 7505 running 11.3(2)T

Can anyone lend any insights ?

This will allow you to log to different files. For example, if you
have:

logging facility local4

on your router... Then a corresponding entry in your syslog.conf would
be:

local4.info /log/rtrlog

This tells syslogd on your unix host to save entries for local4 in the
file /log/rtrlog. One thing that I like to do is have one unix host as
my logging server. That way all devices (routers, switches, etc.) AND
other unix hosts send to the logging server. You only have to check one
server to get all your logs.

The TACACS+ server can send the logs to your syslog server :-)

RE: syslog

2000-10-06 Thread Carmelo Garofalo

Hi Cory,
the Sun workstation don't receive the log by router.
The configuration is the same it of the article reported by Cisco.
In the file Syslog.conf the facility.level with the log file's path is
separated from Tab.
I believe, maiby, that the problem is on my Sun workstation.

Carmelo

Carmelo,

I don't know what your problem is getting it to work on Sun but if you go
out to winfiles.com they have some freeware syslog servers "Kiwi Syslog
daemon" that you can setup on 95/NT.. and the router config would be the
same as in the below link.

Hi

Regarding syslog, the document referenced in this link does work with a Sun
Machine. Anyone configured it for a Linux PC?

Geoffrey

Without more info it's difficult to know what your problem is. However,
nine times out of ten, I've seen people forget to create the syslog file
first on their UNIX workstation. You need to "touch" the file before the
 router can write to it.

Hi

I managed to solve the problem. The issue was with the syslog server
itself, it was not accepting remote syslog calls

Thanks anyway

Geoffrey
