RE: Voice over IP [7:37298]
OK, I'll bite What's the drawbacks or gotcha's of choosing the 3810 over a 2600 or 3600 router?? In comparison, this is what I came up with so far: 1. No WIC modularity to speak of... you're stuck with DB-60 Serial interfaces. 2. Only one 10BT interface, so no VLAN routing :( Is this the ONLY reason why those units are much less expensive than the 1700s, 2600s, or 3600s?? Surely not! Can you do a "cross-over cable" between a couple of these units on their MFT T1 cards?? This would be great for VoATM simulations. As a side note, I didn't find an EOL listing for the MC3810, so I guess that is a positive. waiting patiently for reply input. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. 2600's and 3600's are great for VoIP. You need an IP Plus feature set and then appropriate voice modules based on your needs. An NM-1v or NM-2v and some VIC's would get you started. Re: Voice over IP [7:37298]
2600 is enough actualy Cisco's vg200 is a modified 2600... (that is what is used as the voip gateway) That gateway can also function as the call manager but you lose a lot fo functionallity (it is normaly used as a back up call manager) Say your call mnager is across a wan link and the wan link goes down...the 2600/vg200 will act as a temp call manager until the wan link comes back up, allowing all local calls. And if you bring a separate T into the 2600/vg200 then it can also route outbound calls if the wan link is down. If you plan on using a full featured call manager server, then you will need to contact cisco for a demo. -Patrick >>> "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" 03/05/02 01:07PM >>> Greetings all, What is the minimum equipment I need to setup/test VoIP? Accounting / Authentication for Voice over IP [7:30581]
Hi group I am new to VoIP. I have configured two voice gateways in my lab adn they are working fine. It's a very simple scenario and the calls are originated from one and terminated on the other one. Currently, everyone who dials the phone number of the voice ports can dial a number and the gateways establish a call. My question is that how can I provide a way of authentocation / accounting (something like asking for a PIN number)? Any inputs would be welcome Thanks is advance, Hamid __ Do You Yahoo!? Help with Voice over IP over ATM [7:25163]
I have been looking for what is probably a one line command for about 2 days now. In the lab I am working on you are to do Voice over IP over ATM SVC's. They want it so if no one is talking it still sends empty voice packets. Right now if no one is talking you can hear it go dead silent until someone speeks again. How do you get the empty voice packets to be transmitted so the line is constantly active even if no one is talking? I have looked in the Caslow book, searched the Cisco documentation CD, and I'm just having no luck. Any help would be great. Thanks, Bill L. Re: Voice over IP specific [7:21031]
Looking at what your doing you should be able to dial only once and reach the client on the other side. From my experience you would never have to dial an access code at each stage. I've got some sample config's with pots ports and lots of isdn configs, if you have any more specific questions let me know, regards ""Cisco Breaker"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > Hi All, > > We have a customer that wants a implementation of voice over ip. Hi All, We have a customer that wants a implementation of voice over ip. Their dial plan will be like this. A-clients --pbx--router--voip--router--pbx--Bclients | | router | PBX | Cclients Normally if an A client want to reach a client from B, they dial 66 and from PBX or FXS they get a line and dial 76 and reach the corresponding route rfrom voip and dial 86 to reach PBX and the last step they dial the Bclients expansion number 801. My question is this, Is it possible to only dial once and reach the corresponding Bclient from A without PLar (cause A client will Cclients too)? I want to appoint ony one number and make it dial all 66,76,86,801 with commas ofcourse cause there is a waiting time over PBXs. Re: Video/voice over IP [7:19905]
Thomas I've had a look round CCO and I can't see very much to do with video apart from marketing spiel. I was thinking that this should work but then I had of a couple of thoughts, from my experience with voip normally a call to or from an isdn interface would be a voice call and not a data call. I'm thinking that the video conferencing equipment accepts only data calls, maybe it is possible just send the traffic out of the isdn interface as a data call. Just found some info have a look at this http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/iosw/ioft/mucvmn/prodlit/ipmcm_ds.htm this is just an example but it looks like it could be possible, maybe someone else has done video and can provide some input cheers ""Thomas N."" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > Yes, the camera is H323 supported. This VIC-2BRI-NT/TE mdule is then connected to the a MCU from the ISP provider for video conference (say, AT&T). Voice over IP [7:19590]
Hi all, I have a question regarding to Voice over IP. Is it possible to make voice over IP connections on eth and distributing it by ip over frame relay by a different vendors router?. Let me explain this scenerio in detail. You have a wide area network connected by a frame relay cloud with Motorola routers. The main Motorola router is connected to PBX by 2 E&M ports. And it is the wide area connection by ip over frame relay to the frame relay cloud. We want to connect a cisco 1750 router to ethernet and its fxs port to PBX of the company. Is it possible to put another 1750 to the other side of the frame relay cloud and put its FXS to its PBX and make these to areas talk voice over ip like below figure. In short yes, once you've packetised the voice you can just route it like any other ip packets cheers Pat ""Cisco Breaker"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > Hi all, > > I have a question regarding to Voice over IP. RE: Video/Voice over IP [7:19351]
Thomas;Without knowing more about your actual network topology the best I can do is offer a few pointers, but here goes.384k is generally considered the lowest common denominator for acceptable quality professional videoconferencing. This was originally based on a 3-Bri h.320 (ISDN) system. If people are not moving around much it is not necessary to send screen updates as often in order to maintain a subjectively acceptable experience. It depends on whether your doing a talking head type of thing where someone is sitting at a table as opposed to distance learning with a person moving around alot. While Polycom is generally considered the professional's choice, VCON http://www.vcon.commakes excellent h.320 and h.323 (IP) based videoconferencing systems which include a rate adaptive algorithm which can reduce the rate of updates sent out based upon network congestion. They also have an interactive multicast capability which is unmatched by any other vendor as far as I know. I would highly recommend their products. One of the possible solutions to your bandwidth limitations would be to use an h.320 to h.323 gateway such as the Accord MCU (for PRI...now owned by Polycom) which will also give you a "Brady Bunch" group view of multiple participants or Radvision L2W-323 (for BRI). These would allow you to do your videoconferencing over IP within your campus(es) and use ISDN to extend the calls to other sites without impacting your data network as well as adding the capability of calling outside of your corporation to anyone else's h.320 based system.Of course this is all assuming you were interested in videoconferencing. If video streaming is part of your query, you had best plan on at least 1.5Mb/sec for an acceptable MPEG1 stream. There are several players, Minerva probably being the best of the breed for encoders, Optibase being another. I get CNBC to the desktop at work via IP multicast. It's pretty cool I must say, just make sure you have IGMP snooping, er excuse me CGMP enabled on your switches. As mentioned by others QOS is also important whenever you are running any latency sensitive traffic, but especially for IP Telephony and Video.HTH> > > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]> [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf> Of> > > Thomas N.> > > Sent: Monday, September 10, 2001 8:35 PM> > > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > Subject: Video/Voice over IP [7:19351]> > >> > >> > > Hi All,> > >> > > My company is concerning about running> voice/video over IP> > > network. RE: Video/Voice over IP [7:19351]
Actually we try to avoid netmeeting - our network carries our data traffic, voice (pbx to pbx and some remote ip hardphones) and video (polycom units - fx, mp and viavideo). Netmeeting works, and has its place in the organisation, but can cause headaches for everyday support, so we only roll out a limited number of systems for specific functions - remote training mostly. I should elaborate on the network a touch. Our hq in San Diego is connected into the MPLS network via a 3-t1 IMA connection, with a 3mbps CIR. Our other offices range from a full t1 into the MPLS cloud to 256cir/512port. The direct frame connections are 512cir/1024port, but we're slowing migrating them all over to MPLS (as the service becomes more and more available). Glad I could help out. RE: Video/Voice over IP [7:19351]
We are currently running a mix of polycom mp and fx units via h.323 on our WAN. We have set all the units to not run at any speed greater than 256k. The video quality is great on all of them, even those going into questionaable frame networks such as Mexico. Our latency from our headquarters in San Diego to the various video systems ranges from 40ms to 210ms. Our WAN is composed of IP-enabled Frame links (AT&T's way of saying MPLS VPN) with the occasionally frame pvc in place. If you are going to depend on the video quality being good, you should look into implementing some form of QOS on the network. Most people do this with voice having a higher rating through the WAN, but we've found that glitches are more easily recognized and complained about on the video side. We are also running voice over the same network, but not the the same degree. Our voice system is Lucent based, and simply ties into our LAN's in each office that is connected with Lucent PBX systems. The voice quality is decent over the links, at least good cell phone quality, and the latency is minimal. One thing to be concerned about with voice is it's high demands for bandwidth per call. The Lucent system uses 64K per connection (which really doesn't measure out quite that high). Using analog phones with FXS and FXO cards in cisco routers generates sound quality that is at least as good, and lower overhead. But it is more difficult to integrate into an existing homogenous network (if you have disparate pbx systems, take a look at the cisco method). I haven't worked with the cisco ip phone solutions on my network, but understand from colleagues that they work extremely well. On the video side, try to test a few different systems that meet your needs, even trying different systems from different manufacturers. There is often a noticable difference in video quality depending on the systems (ie - our polycom fx h.323 systems have far better video performance than our polycom mp units with h.323 - but the fx doesn't have built in isdn and cost quite a bit more). Have fun with this if you can - video and voice over ip are great ways to wow upper management teams and are fun to play with. As Manager, Voice/Data systems at the law firm I worked at, we demo'd two different Videoconferencing technologies. I don't remember the first vendor, but the second we looked at was Polycom. Hi All, My company is concerning about running voice/video over IP network. Our WAN is running on fractial T1, so bandwidth limitation is a big problem to us. What will be the mininum bandwidth requirement for voice and video traffic? 128k? Thanks! Thomas N. Wayne, Try Cisco Voice over Frame Relay, ATM, and IP by Steve McQuerry. It is a very good reference book on how to configure routers to support voice over X. I would also definately recommend Integrating Voice and Data Networks by Scott Keagy. Eddie -- Edward J. You may want to consider: Integrating Voice and Data Networks by Scott Keagy ( Cisco Press ) Configuring Cisco Voice Over IP by Elliot Lewis ( Syngress ) Both are very readable. The latter contains a lot of conf information. I am not deeply into Keagy's book as yet. Hi, until 12.0.5T the codec G729r8 was pre-IETF standard, from 12.0.5T the codec was standardized and the 2 codec are incompatible (different bit ordering) you must use the command "codec g729r8 pre-ietf" for interoperability but there are some negotiation problem (rink back tone for example). You must consider from 12.0.7T there are many new function very useful (codec, timing and debugging for example). My opinion check for 12.1.x because 12.0.7T reached the End of Engeneering so no more development are planned for this release. Check for memory. Re: Voice over IP
Hi Keith, I'm not an expert on RSVP but I'll give this a shot... The reservation of bandwidth using RSVP simply prioritizes RSVP traffic of a given flow over all other incoming traffic (note that one RSVP flow can be prioritized over another RSVP flow). Thus, the RSVP traffic will always be routed before non-RSVP traffic. This has the effect of reserving bandwidth for RSVP traffic. Now, what happens if there isn't any incoming traffic on a given RSVP flow (i.e. your silence suppression example)? In the case of an extended gap between RSVP flow packets, non-RSVP packets could slip in and get routed due to the lack of priority traffic. Thus, the bandwidth is available to other traffic as along as there is no incoming RSVP traffic. That said, keep in mind that an RSVP session (flow) on a router will timeout if: 1) No RSVP packets in a flow have been received within a specified amount of time 2) No PATH or RESV message has been sent to periodically refresh the router's RSVP state machine When a timeout occurs (timeout intervals are specified in the PATH message), the router stops giving priority to RSVP traffic thereby releasing the bandwidth reservation. This is why it is unlikely that you would see a large number of non-RSVP packets being routed between two RSVP packets of the same flow (the session would probably timeout before this could occur). Hope this helps... -Marcus At 04:16 PM 07/26/2000 +0100, keith wood wrote: >I am currently reading throught the CVoice notes and have just passed the >section on RSVP. I am currently reading throught the CVoice notes and have just passed the section on RSVP. You can reserve bandwidth with this protocol to give to active voice channels for the duration of the call - this much I understand, no problem. What isn't clear in the notes is whether or not the bandwidth is available to other traffic if the voice traffic is not using it all - ie: during silence suppressed moments. Anybody know..?
