RE: CCIE Home Lab [7:69580]
i agree with Jeff, try and get slightly newer kit if you can, or anything that will at least run 12.2. Nothing wrong with the 4000 tho, if you are using it as a FR switch. jeff sicuranza wrote: > > do not bother with any 2500 series if you are starting out now. > IOS improvements and requriements are slowly phasing them out, > look into 1750, 2600, 3600 series only. 12.3 does not even run > on any 4000 or 4500 series and only IP plus for 2500 series. do not bother with any 2500 series if you are starting out now. IOS improvements and requriements are slowly phasing them out, look into 1750, 2600, 3600 series only. 12.3 does not even run on any 4000 or 4500 series and only IP plus for 2500 series. CCIE Home Lab [7:69580]
Hello all, I currently have a 4000M for my frame switch, 1-2511,1-2610, and 1-2524 in my home lab. What other routers would you recommend to complete the router portion of the lab? Will 3 additional 2500 be sufficient? Routing TCP/IP, volume 1 by Cisco Press (Jeff > Doyle) CL: check out my web site for my own personal opinion of "must have" books and other study materials: http://www.chuckslongroad.info/BookList.htm while you're poking around there, a couple of the Groupstudy Homilies are worth looking at - distribute-list gateway and DiffServ-DSCP. If you really want to do this at home - get one of the lab packages - NLI, IPExpert, hello computers - and enough routers to emulate the topology. All of the packages differ in router requirements. you don't necessarily need a lot of 2600's, but you will need a lot of serial ports for frame relay and for other topology simulation. you will need to fork out for at least one of the 3550's. IMHO, don't spend money on things like ATM and voice - rent a few hours of rack time to practice this stuff. concentrate on practicing routing any and all protocols over nmba, redistribution, qos, bridging, dlsw. these are the keys, and if you don't get these right, the rest doesn't matter. best wishes. > > also > 1. RE: CCIE Home Lab Materials and Equipments [7:57810]
You need more books then those two. Vol 1 is a great book. The cisco web page is the best place for information. This is the Web page for the Cisco CD that you are allowed to use in the lab. (The CD not the web page) http://www.cisco.com/univercd/home/home.htm You need to go to "All Product Documentation" then "Cisco IOS Software Configuration" You don't need a Catalyst 5000. The lab changed to Catalyst 3550 w/ the EMI image. Two totally different switches. Also get more routers, the 2500 series is good enough and cheap on ebay. Hi group, I want to get it right the first time. I intend setting up my CCIE lab at home. I will appreciate if someone that have taken the lab or preparing for it, tell me what Switches, Routers, materials I need to buy. Also information about the various needed blades on the switches is important, cables, cards, modules, etc. I currently have a cable connection and also a dialup connection from home to the internet, are these enough or do I need to get a second cable connection? I curently have the following books: 1. CCIE Fundametals Network Design and Case Studies 2nd Edition by Cisco Press. 2. Routing TCP/IP, volume 1 by Cisco Press (Jeff Doyle) also 1. Cisco router 1601 2. Cisco router 2502 3. cisco router 3000 I intend buying Cisco Catalyst Switch 5000 within a few days, but I need your assistance. Please I will appreciate an answer for my big brothers & sisters CCIEs and those who are currently working towards it. Thanks in advance. Godswill Oletu CCNP, CCDP, CSS1. __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: CCIE Home Lab [7:49369]
DO NOT buy a Cat 5500 for the home lab if you are doing so for the CCIE. They are taking the 5500 off the Lab. Read the list about these and other recent changes. They were announced less than a month ago, and there has been a lot of discussion here. Now you could still buy a Cat 5500; just don't do it because you think it will be on the CCIE lab. They are dropping in value daily, so you might be able to learn something for CCNP switching test on a very cheap Cat 5000. My Cat that I was proud to have put together at reasonable price will go someday for MUCH less than I paid for it. Also, do not even think of buying a 3900 TR switch. Voice and ATM can be done on-line cheaply enough. At that point, you've got a great pod, and can do most anything. I'd only suppliment it as you start doing labs and see that you need specific things. from CCO: Lab Exam Content and Equipment Changes CCIE candidates should note changes to the technical content and equipment in the lab exam. Effective October 1st, 2002, candidates will no longer be tested in the areas of IGRP, Token Ring, Token Ring Switching, or IPX. Note: DLSW+ will remain as a protocol that can be tested in the lab. Re: CCIE home lab [7:46395]
There's a couple of threads running about it right now on the group. Basically Cisco has announced Token Ring, IPX and a few other things are gone from the lab in October. Like I say, review some of the other current threads and you'll see more detail... --- Dennis - Original Message - From: "Walker, Jim" To: Sent: Thursday, June 13, 2002 5:34 AM Subject: RE: CCIE home lab [7:46395] > YES, please do explain what happens after October. > > Thanks > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Thursday, June 13, 2002 8:25 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: CCIE home lab [7:46395] > > > Hi, > > Could you explain a bit more what happen after October ? > > > Thanks > > Philip > > - Original Message - > Wrom: IYZUNNYCGPKYLEJGDGVCJVTLBXFGGMEPYOQKED > To: > Sent: Thursday, June 13, 2002 1:09 AM > Subject: RE: CCIE home lab [7:46395] > > > > you apparently dont need the token or cat switch > > anymore if you are taking the lab after october... > > > > > > Larry Letterman > > Cisco Systems > > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > > > > -Original Message- > > Wrom: OTWFAOBUZXUWLSZLKBRNVWWCUFPEGAUTFJMVRESKPNKMBIPBARHDMNNSKVFVWRKJ > > Hunt Lee > > Sent: Wednesday, June 12, 2002 7:02 PM > > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > Subject: CCIE home lab [7:46395] > > > > > > Hi, > > > > I know that this may have come up many times. Have a look at the link from Cisco. They will be removing Token Ring and the 3920 Switch and replacing the 5500's with 3550's which can do layer 3 and other new advanced features. I agree! I am confused on the issue. I ordered the GBIC-SX for the 6509 but was worried about the difference between it and the WS-X5484. What is the difference?? I can't find any information saying concretely that there is a difference. And so will the Cat5000 that you have. Instead sell the Catalyst and with the money you would've spent on the TR routers, and the money from the Catalyst 5K, buy a 3550 switch (which will be in the LAB after Oct 1), and maybe tyhe ISDN and a router to use as a Frame Switch like you mentioned. Take it for what it's worth. If you are going to do your LAB before then, then justy continue on Good Luck! RE: CCIE Home Lab [7:35677]
The "rack" is usually determined by money , however I can tell you that " Mr.Ellis " will sell you a complete "rack" with what you need and all the stuff you will need will be there. I have known Brad for about 3 years or so and we used to sell in the same markets and I never saw one bad word about him or his products. I doubt he will have the cables all labeled port to port (grin)but the rack would be complete. Also you will see many different racks out there, take mine it's bunch of Cisco , Bay . 3com and Olicom stuff and soon some IBM iron. Why, because I got the extra stuff real cheap and free. If it will run OSPF and or BGP I will add it. So many racks you will see will be different but they all will have the same core stuff cat 5000 2 ISDN 1 Token Ring 1 Frame switch 2 2621 etc Oz Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=35708&t=35677 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
CCIE Home Lab [7:35677]
Associates: OK! I know I'm not ready, but I've got the cash, along with the time, family support, and the desire. And if I wait until I'm ready, I'll never do it. I believe that Mr. Ellis, and others, have posted messages offering "complete", ready-to-go, CCIE home labs for sale, but I've never been able to get an accurate quote on exactly how much, for what, when it arrives, does it include cables, which IOS, memory (and how much), etc., etc., etc. I want to buy it all, in one fell swoop, and not have to search E-Bay for some obscure missing piece. Like the RACK??? A good friend has spent over a year assembling his home CCIE lab, in his "copious" spare time, and has yet to make it work. Nice hobby, he's having fun, and he will succeed and learn a lot in the process, but I'd like to get there a little bit faster. I'm not in this for the money, but for the knowledge on how this stuff really works, and how to make it work when it don't, and for the challenge of attaining the "Doctorate of Networking". I believe I'm not alone in this. Are there others out there, seeking the "ultimate" cert, who are THIS CLOSE (passed the written!), but don't have access to a real lab, who have the means to buy a package deal, on proven, used, guaranteed equipment? BTW, I understand that THIS CLOSE (passed the written!) is light years from passing the lab, but without the hardware, I'll always be THIS CLOSE, yet SO far away. Please reply directly to me, off the discussion group, if you would. RE: Reasonable cost ATM for CCIE home lab? [7:7921]
My bet would be on the 7000 router with the AIP card. There is a reseller who started at $600 per Multimode OC-3 155 Mbs AIP and is now down to $350. 7000 chassis have been quite reasonable. The RP processor only goes to IOS ver 11.2. There are RSP7000 modules available that will run the latest IOS but they are pricey. Re: CCIE Home Lab? [7:5832]
actually, this is an ON-TOPIC conversation I actually posted this as a proposition in a post a few weeks ago, and then started getting the equipment. What I have right now is 1 CPA-2511 (terminal server - very important in the CCIE Lab) - can also double as a router 1 2504 (T/R, 2 ser, 1 BRI) 3 2514 (dual Eth, 2 ser) 1 4000 (NP-2E, NP-4T) doubles as a Frame Relay switch and a router 1 4500 (NP-2R, NP-8B) 1 4500 (NP-2R, NP-8B, NP-4T) 1 Merge ISDN simulator back-to-back 60-pin cables (DTE to DCE) DSU's MAU's etc. That's 8 routers with which I can do many (if not all) of the exercises and lab practices that are in the public domain and the textbooks. I'm not going to work the ATM part of the CCIE lab at home - I've got some experience with both LANE and with establishing IP over PVCs. The voice part I will have to buy using some on-line lab time, and also using a CIM. The Catalyst 5000 part is something that I have available here at work on an idle unit. Take a look at some of the scenarios at www.fatkid.com and see what he used for his setup. Also, do a web search on CCIE lab and see what you get for hits on that. good luck and have fun shopping for equipment. -e- - Original Message - From: "Don Lavu" To: Sent: Thursday, May 24, 2001 5:58 PM Subject: OT: CCIE Home Lab? RE: CCIE Home Lab? [7:5832]
Let's think about the Lab exam... Ip and Ipx you know are going to be there. You'll probably see Ethernet, FastEthernet, TokenRing, Frame relay, ISDN, Analog Dial, Sync and Async Serial, t1s and t3s. I would expect to be told to configure a router as a Frame-relay switch and an Access Server. I'd also expect to see some bridging and tunneling. They've put a lot of money into MLS and Encrypttion so that'll probably be there. Vlans and trunking for sure. And You would probably want something with a VIP so you could get a feel for how that works. >From that, I would say that the following is a good start, with guestimated ebay prices. MLS, Vlans, Connectivity to devices, Flexible, but you want he router to work as an MLS-RP, and be able to do several types of trunking.. Cat 5k - 1300 7000 - 1500-2500 depending on config. Token ring card for 5k and/or MAU Cat 19xx - 400 Cat 29xxXL - 800 Isdn... You'll want two ISDN capable devices 804 - 250 2503 - 700 and an ISDN simulator - 800-1000 (these are cheaper if you buy the kind that takes an NT-1 Frame-Relay switch... Pick any one.. Ags - 200 or 4000 - 750/1000 or Some other router with at least 4 serial ports. Fastethernet/vlans/trunking... 2620 - 1200 Access Server/analog dial Pick any one 2509 - 800 2511 - 700 (It doesn't make any sense why this one goes for cheaper!) 2522 - 800 (kind of rare, but handy.. 1 eth, 2 Sync Ser, 8 async ser and 1 BRI) Routers for Ospf, bgp, eigrp, bridging, ip, and ipx Pick any 2, it would be nice if you could get one or two with the Wic-t1-dsu cards in them 2501 - 500 2610 - 800 4000 - 750/1000 1720 - 500 Rack to mount it in.. Pick one Rack 150.00 Cabinet 500.00 Cabling DB-60 crossovers, plus whatever other weirdness they throw at you.. A pair of real external csu-dsu's, so you don't freak out if you have to configure one. T1 crossover cables, Power. -Original Message- From: Donald B Johnson jr [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2001 8:55 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: CCIE Home Lab? Re: ccie home lab
Are you really a CCNP? CCIE lab include C5000 switch, 4500 router... A 2600 router with 100BaseT/ISL is better than 2500, and a C5000 is required. I think C3000 can do nothing about this exam.
