CIDR - I was dumb - thanks every one [7:75079]

2003-09-09 Thread Steven Aiello
I think I was over looking something very simple. CLASS-LESS! If I
understand things correctly. If I have 10 bits for my host section I
have a total of 1024 hosts. What I was stuck on is liner break down
dividing subnets in factors of 2. But ( here was my mistake ) by powers
of 2, I'm not sure if I'm explaining it right, but I think I got it. I
was over thinking the problem!

1) RFC 1771
2)Sam Halabi's book
3)The two Chapters on BGP from Doyles TCP/IP Vol 2

2003-07-18 Thread David Vital
Once again, the topics covered here and last minute questions answered by
group members have paid off. 2 down, 2 to go. Time to start chewing thru
BCRAN. I thought the Switching exam was definately easier than the BSCI
test. Only had two things throw me. One was a network diagram that I was
supposed to mark as an answer to the question and I could swear that the box
in the lower right hand corner said more I hadnd't finished answering
the question but wanted to know what more there was so I clicked it..and
it moved on to the next question. So, I'm sure I got that wrong. The other
issue was questions about 3500XL switches. I don't recall seeing anything
in any study material saying that they were included in the test. I've
worked with them and done some reading on them so I wasn't totally in the
dark, but it freaked me out for a minute.

Now it's time for BCRAN.guess I'll start tonight.

David

Team,
This morning I was able to pass the DQoS test, wow...what a rideThe test
is very hard if you don't have

pass right? I want to specially thanks to Dennis Laganiere and Brad Ellis

day I will have the pleasure of meeting you.

My sources were the following:

this)
Token Ring paper by Dennis Laganiere

Boson exam 3

Well, now the big task, the LAB.

pick up the RIF papers that are available free. one is on the groupstudy web

The CCIE written and the CID are remarkably similar in perspective and

Re: Frame Relay help please .. thanks [7:29002]

2001-12-13 Thread reinhold fischer

it depends on the layer2 protocol and how the router handles it if it sees
its own packets coming back. I am using loops often to test a line if it
is ok or has any problem. I am not sure how FrameRelay encapsulation
behaves when you loop the line but i think it sounds feasible that it
will not come to an up/up state. To debug the situation i would consider
that the framerelay link consist out of three parts:

- the local loop on one side (first accessline to the frame cloud)
- the framerelay cloud
- the local loop on the other side (second accessline to the fr cloud)

to test if the local loops are working fine i would ask the carrier to
give you a loop on their side facing in your direction so the signal
travels from your router to the providers framerelay location, over the
loop and back to your router - without travelling any framerelay related
equipment. You can set then a more 'loop-friendly' encapsulation like
HDLC on your side and thoroughly test the line with a few long pings to
see if any problems occur. If you have no problems with that tests on
both of your lines to the frame-relay cloud, let the provider remove the
loops and reconfigure your routers to frame relay. You can assume then
that your local loops to the FR cloud are running error-free.

For more framerelay related debugging i can recommend:

Frame Relay help please .. thanks [7:29002]

2001-12-12 Thread Telemachus Luu

Hi,

to think it's a bad csu as they aren't able to loop it. As a result, I did

For some reason, the line protocol for the serial interface comes up for
about 10 seconds, the comes back down. When I do a shut and then a no shut,
again, it comes back up for about 10 seconds and then goes back down.
Here's the current config and a sh int ser... LMI enq for send and receive
still increment even when line protocol is in down state... If I set the
csu/dsu to loopback, shouldn't the line protocol stay in up state forever?
If so, what could be the issue here?

All, Thanks so much for your guidence!

 I completed CCNP/CCDP first.

Then I read the Sybex(Lammle) CCIE Study Guide. I used the Boson Tests #1
and #2, and quickly realized I was not ready for some of the ATM
questions.
I picked up the McGrawHill(Giles) CCIE study guide, and used it and the
Cisco Web Site to fill in the blanks. For Token Ring I used the RIF study
aid that is free here at the GroupStudy StudyNotes as well as the Rossi
 Paper at CCPREP.
I used some of the free study aids at Bosons site, they have some faster
ways to derive your IP access list wildcards and IP summary ranges.

 Token Ring Rif Links:

 For summary addressing and wildcards:

I passed with an 83% I did pretty well in all areas except for
Performance
Management section, if anyone knows what that section's focous was I
would
appreciate a response. Perhaps the fact that I don't know is indicitive as
to why I did not do so well in that area, I had really wanted to hit a 90%
:-)

If I had it to do over, I would have started with assessing myself with
the
boson's Having a CCNP/DP gets you about 80% there, I could have saved
about
2 weeks if I just found out in the begining that 20% that I needed to
focus
 on.

I am off to start studies for the LAB, since I don't know where else to
start, I will ask the groupstudy Lab forum moderator if I can join after I
 schedule my Lab Exam.

Thanks again for all the advice. Good Luck to those persuing this crazy
 certification. :-)

Here is a brief list of some of the important processes for me along my
journey

  * I passed the Written in January 2001.
  * I took one week long class ANEWII back in May 2001. (Very Good, thanks
Steve McQuerry)
  * I read the All in One study Guide, not bad has about 82 basic labs.
  * I read the CCIE Lab Practice Kit (6 Case Studies) Long scenarios, not
all
current (AppleTalk, Decnet)
  * I spent a week at the University of Pittsburgh, in their CCIE Lab.
Pretty good, however they don't give you the answers to their labs.

  * I spent 3 days in my local Cisco office on their CCIE rack, not as
beneficial as I had hoped.
  * I have some test equipment at work, 4 2500's, 2 2600's, took all the
equipment home and spent countless hours practicing.

  * About 3 weeks before my exam, I purchased the IPExpert Workbook, along
with about (6) 12 hour blocks over the course of three weeks.

That's it in a very small nutshell...

Good luck to each of you, I do believe it is a very worthwhile goal...

RE: Thanks to all who have contributed... [7:15994]

2001-08-14 Thread Johns, John A.

* I read the CCIE Lab Practice Kit (6 Case Studies) Long scenarios, not all
current (AppleTalk, Decnet)

Thanks,

Re: thanks people [7:10974]

2001-07-04 Thread Jennifer Cribbs

I didn't actually fail dos, but I failed the a+os with a 603. But it feels
like I failed a dos test. As I started digging through
what I could remember on the test, I got hung up on a couple of issues and
mainly io.sys and msdos.sys and what was
actually going on in the boot process. Jon Krabbenschmidt has given me a
ton of information concerning the boot
process and went out of his way to help meThanks Jon...!

And Dom.Stocqueler, I appologize for being a little
testy,dkjhelklsjflkjal;skj...it happens to me on occasion and
usually when I am deeply concentrating on an issue. My sense of humor goes

And since I don't care if I get flamed anymore for being non cisco or having
a non cisco comment and already having
the answer to my question, I will post my original mail that Jon helped me
with plus the answer he gave me and a couple
of others alsoIt might refresh everyone's memory on something noone
really thinks about much anymore, but I just
find it so interesting.Maybe it will help someone else. Thank you to
the smart people on this site. There were a
couple of other very good answers also, but these two cover the gist of what
I wanted to know.

Jenn
===

My question:
---
I just recently failed my a+ os test and so I am digging again through my
book. Now just so you will know the book I am
using is course technology and is entitled Enhanced a+guide to Managing
and Maintaing Your PC. I also have the a+ book by Michael Myers, but it is
not the book I am referring to in this
particular scenerio/question. What I am doing is looking up a few specific
questions I was unsure of
on my test and sometimes I get a little carried away and get too deep which
is probable the case here, but here goes.

One of the questions was a t/f question and it read: The IO.sys file
executes the config.sys. That seems very simple and so I put true for my
answer and
believed it to be true, but i was not absolutely sure of this, so I started
reading. The other day after the
test, in reading about the boot process, it says that when the 'dos
operating system' is loaded, when the io.sys is
finished it turns control over to the msdos.sys and that there is a program
'within the
msdos.sys' that executes the config.sys file. The key words I am seeing here
is the wordswithin the msdos.sys.

Then a couple of pages on further in the book, it is discussing the
95 operating sys and the boot process. It said that io.sys executes the
config.sys when
booting. Does this mean that the initial boot process is different
depending on
whether you are booting up dos or a gui/windows type environment?
If that is so, when loading dos os, what is the name of the program within
msdos.sys that executes the config.sys file? It didn't say.

In case you have this book, the first portion is on page 73 in the
second paragraph under step 3. This is where it discusses the program with
the msdos.sys that exe's the config.sys file. On os-95, this is on page 77,
step 5.

And if you don't have the book, this is specifically what it says:

On page 73 and is referring to dos here:

The IO.sys file contains more bios sw. MSDOS.sys contains sw to
manage files, run applications sw, and interface with hw. Once these two
files are loaded into memory, the boot record program is no longer needed,
and control turns to a 'program' stored in msdos.sys. This program looks on
the
hard drive for a file named CONFIG.sys. CONFIG.sys is the first os file that
you, as a user, can change. After config.sys is exectuted, MSDOS.sys looks
for
another dos file named command.com. This file has three parts: more code to
manage i/o, programs for internal dos commands, such as copy and dir, and a
short program that looks for another file name AUTOEXEC.bat.

Now, is very close to specifically says that when loading dos os that the
i/o.sys does not execute the config.sys. It says that a program within
msdos.sys does that.

Then on page 77 in referring to 95, it says:

step 5: Again, just as with dos, io.sys loads. In fact io.sys is
areally a small core dos module. io.sys looks for a config.sys file, and if
found, the config.sys file executes.

step 6: after config.sys is complete, io.sys looks for msdos.sys.
The role of msdos.sys in 95 is much different from its role
in dos.
=
My comments on this.

If for dos, the msdos.sys has an internal program that
executes config.sys and in windows, the io.sys executes the config.sys, how
can you answer a question with a true or
false answer if the real answer is.it depends on the operating sys being
loaded.?

correct or not?

So now, my question is what is the name of the program in
msdos.sys that actually does the executing of the config.sys?

Opinions..comments...

Sorry this is so long and I also realize this is probably not pertinent to
the test in a real sense but this is driving me nuts as
I can't find

RE: POD, what is that? [7:10128] - thanks! [7:10140]

2001-06-27 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Thanks to you Priscilla, and all the many others who has replied to me.

Sometimes I feel like Cisco (and all the others for that matter) comes up
with too many unnecessary new words, or new meanings for old words.

Normally the three letter words with the unknown meaning the first time you
see it, is an abreaviation of three words, which makes this word different
from normal.

With words as POTS for plain old telephone system, I would have thought of
POD as pretty old device or power of duplex.

Anyway, I am starting to get into a far out word game here, so I think I'll
stop before I end up in orbit.

Thanks again,

Ole

It's not a stupid question. I has me laughing, but not at you.

Cisco uses the word pod as a group of routers and switches in a lab or
training class. In a training class, each group of students works on one
pod.

But nobody else uses the word that way!?

I just finished writing some information on pods in the protocol analysis
world. In that case, a pod is an extra little thingie (technical term) that
helps the analyzer get on the network. With full-duplex links, for example,
if you don't want to break the link and put in a shared hub for attaching
the analyzer, you can get a so-called pod that leaves the link at
full-duplex traffic and buffers traffic before sending it to the analyzer.
These pods are costly.

I am in the middle of my BSCN book, and are now seeing the word POD showing
up several times. It tells me that each POD has a number of routers, and
there are a certain amount of POD's.

Reading the explanation at http://www.dictionary.com gave me NO answers to
this one, and the closest thing I can guess my self to is that POD's are
kind of departments or subnets, unless the Prince Of Darkness has been
involved with Cisco networks lately :-)

Thanks for any replies to this one.

2001-06-27 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

The editor should have caught it. I haven't seen the book, but if it really
uses the word pod to mean a group of routers without any explanation that
this is a special Cisco training use of the word, that's really bad.
Editors waste a lot of time doing things like changing 10Mbps to 10Mbytes

I am in the middle of my BSCN book, and are now seeing the word POD
showing
up several times. It tells me that each POD has a number of routers, and
there are a certain amount of POD's.

Reading the explanation at http://www.dictionary.com gave me NO answers to

kind of departments or subnets, unless the Prince Of Darkness has been
involved with Cisco networks lately :-)

Thanks for any replies to this one.

If they are using a dv routing protocol such as RIP

making it across causing the route to go away and the
router to use floating/alternate route over ISDN. I've

seen this happen with RIP with heavy traffic.

Hope this helps... Erick

Without making any assumptions except that the
 Frame Relay interface is
  configured with a backup-interface statement
 that's pointed to a dialer,
 and
that all the routing is working okay, and that the
 dialer has a good
dialer-list, then the config would look similar
 to:

  interface serial0/1
   encapsulation frame-relay
   backup interface dialer1
   no backup load
   no backup delay

  interface dialer1

then the only thing that would bring the backup
 into play is the serial
  going down/down momentarily.

If there IS a backup load statement on serial,
 then bandwidth percentage
over the first parameter of that command would
 initiate the dialer.
 Adjust
  it higher or remove it.

If there's no backup interface command on the
 serial interface, then a
floating static route is probably initiating the
DDR. If an IGP is used

 the default route would
  also start the dialing sequence.

Re: Frame Relay backup issue...(thanks) [7:3686]

2001-05-09 Thread Erick B.

As others have said, you need to find out if they are
using the backup interface commands or floating
statics, etc. If they are using backup interface then
the ISDN will be in standby mode until the load is
reached if they have a backup load command also
configured. If they are using backup interface with
frame relay then you may also want to look into
frame-relay end-to-end keepalives (12.0(5)T feature)
which will make the backup link kick in more reliably
when a failure occurs.

But for the possibility I mentioned, the solution is
to use another routing protocol that doesn't
constantly send updates such as OSPF, EIGRP, static
routes, etc. EIGRP will only use up to 50% of
bandwidth leaving 50% for data. This doesn't mean
EIGRP eats up 50% always - just if the network has
alot of routes during the update/convergence process.

Dear Group,

I have a small query:

Is it advisable to disable broadcast on all the ports of switches. I have 3
catalyst series 6509/5500/5505 in my network running all the WINNT servers
4.0
with all win98/win95 as clients. With the help of CWSI I have observed that
many a times the broadcast increases very much I experience lot of
response
delay in my network.
can I use the command:

switch (enable)# set port broadcast 0%

Will this put any impact on my network like nodes won't be able to talk to
server or problem in finding the servers. I have also created VLAN's in
my
network to limit the broadcasts. Should I doit on all the ports...

many thanks in advance

from DHCP server. But they can login to local domain which is part of local
VLAN. This problem is only faced by users having laptop (IBM).
Does anybody faced this problem ever.

On both of my servers NT 2 way trust relationship is established so that
users can login to any domain. I have also specified ip helper-address in
my main 6509 MSFC card. The switches are connected via gigabit uplink
ports.
It is not login id problem because I am able to login to both the server
when I physically go to opposite vlan managed to login to both the
server.

 help appreciated...

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

2001-03-21 Thread Buri, Heather H

I want to thank everyone for your insights and suggestions. I guess I did
not mean to come across as complaining too much. I really had high hopes
for this class and maybe I overprepared for the course because I wanted to
get a lot out of it. I had already read the Cisco BSCN course book as well
as was 3/4 of the way through Doyle's book before my class started. I know
they have to cover a lot of the basics but I just thought one day on RIP was
a little much.

I will take Priscilla's and Pam's suggestion and write a letter to Global
Knowledge and let them know about my experience. Maybe they will let me
audit the course at a later date. I still plan on attempting the test in
April after some more review. I have a small home lab so I may be able to
simulate some of the BGP stuff at home.

Anyways, I did not realize that you could find out about the instructor's by
calling Global directly. I registered online and they don't give much
information there. I will remember this for the future. Also, our
instructor never mentioned you could get a refund or reschedule during the
first day. But I will bring this up in the letter to Global Knowledge.

Thanks everyone and this is a great list with lots of knowledgeable people
on it!

Sincerely,

Yipe. I just now noticed this thread, and it breaks my heart to hear
stories like this.

Global Knowledge classes are guaranteed. I'm not sure Heather could get
her money back inasmuch as she did sit the entire class, but I am certain
they will let her sit the class again with a more experienced instructor.
Hey, I'm teaching BSCN in Arlington, VA for Global Knowledge the week of
April 23 . . . not scheduled for any Texas trips any time soon.

For future reference, Global Knowledge WILL refund your money or
reschedule you if you return your materials to the instructor by the end
of the first day. Instructors are supposed to emphasize that during the
introductory remarks.

When you schedule the class, talk to the customer service people and ask
them about the instructor. The best questions to ask are, "how long has
this person been a Cisco-certified instructor," and "how many times has
this person taught this class." The instructor schedules are published
about a month in advance of the classes.

I hope you won't get a bad impression of all Global Knowledge instructors
because of this one. I have had the distinct pleasure of auditing BSCN,
CATM and OSPF/BGP classes since joining Global Knowledge, and the
instructors in each case were outstanding in every way, but beyond
outstanding in terms of technical knowledge. And I'm a tough critic,
believe me. For example, how about having CATM taught by someone who
participated in the development of the protocols as a member of the ATM
Forum working groups? Or BGP taught by someone whose consulting practice
focuses on designing networks for national ISPs. And of course, the
groupstudy.com founder, Paul Borghese, is a Global Knowledge instructor.
;-)

I say she should go for it. Most training partners are very concerned with
customer satisfaction and try their best to offer high-quality classes. My
guess is that her instructor was new. That happens. (It can be extremely
difficult to teach a new class, but that's not her problem ;-) If they
won't give her a refund, they might at least let her attend again for
free.
I realize it can be hard to get away again and possibly spend more travel

2001-02-23 Thread Matt Wehland

Thank you for the archives.

I was just playing with my new 2501 and was having a problem with the line
protocol being down. Looked through my books, looked on Cisco's site,
couldn't find the answer (I'm sure it's on Cisco's site I just couldn't
find it).
Wrote a message asking for help, but before sending, I remembered the
archives. Can't ask for help without trying there, can I?
Searched on 'line protocol down' and found my answer in about the fourth
message I viewed. 'no keepalives'. Doh!

So this message is just a thank you and a reminder to check the archives
before posting for help, the answer may already be in there.

their BCSN I took the ACRC, so I don't know if that one is any good or not,
but I did like their BCRAN? McGraw Hill's BCRAN is basically the Ciscopress

Thanks: Switching 2.0

2001-01-26 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

I simply wanted to say thanks to those who have helped me pass my Switching
2.0 last Saturday, but the e-mail I wrote (last Saturday) must contain
something that are not allowed through the filter, because I have tried to
send it many times now, and even Jennifer Cribbs has been nice enough to try
to send it for me too, without any luck.

Anyway(s), thanks, and if anyone needs good advise for this test, please
follow my CiscoKing link below, and click on the exam.

Thanks,

Ole

Ole,

It probably contained the word "NOSOB" (spelt
backwards)
Try spelling it backwards to beat the filter "NOSOB"

Thanks Jennifer and another simple questions!

2001-01-12 Thread Max Rion

Thanks for your heartful reply! Think u will help me a lot many times. :)

Well another simple question are here

1. Difference between 'reset' and 'reload' command!

2. In uBR 924, there are some led and DSNR is one of them. Is it Digital
Signal to Noise Ratio? When checking SNR in IOS, the smaller numbers
(including minus figures) are the better performancer than bigger ones?

3. When uBR 924 couldn't give IPs to the connected LANs (not because boot
problems but somewhat problems unknown), someone said this as 'Ranging
problem'. Is it correct?

4. When you use 'show stac'?

WowI think I am getting better because of you all. Thanks for letting me
asking on! Have a nice day!

2000-12-29 Thread Kane, Christopher A.

Thanks to all of you on the list for your many contributions, study related
and otherwise. I have learned much from this list. Not just commands and
configs but also theory and attitudes towards both newer and older
technologies.

A special thanks to Chuck, Priscilla, Leigh Anne and Howard. My bookshelves
at work and home are filling up fast.

Thanks also to the others that always seem to lab things up much faster than
I get around to doing.

I look forward to next year as I finish my CCNP, move on to the DP and
whatever else may come up.

I would beg to differ and agree with Brian. The content doesn't match
  half
of what is on the market today for the CCIE study guides. In
addition,
there is the errata that's still available by McGraw-Hill.
Combined with what one would consider 'perfect' studying material as

you have to be involved with cabling to understand the concept of punch down
blocksit's the location where the cable wires connect...some times they
are small plastic blocks with different colorswhen you scrip a cat5
cable open you see different color wires...they correspond to the blocks for
connections.you also have a tool called a punch down tool used to insert
the wires into the block...you are punching the wires
down...'punch-down'.

you, bradley, are more than right about terminology...there are too many in

Folks, is it really necessary to pounce on someone for asking an occasional
"simple" question? Okay, so CSU/DSUs are basic networking gear. But guess
what: *none* of the CCNA material I studied ever went into any great detail
on what exactly this thing was or did, and coming from the technical
training side of the house never dealt with one until very recently. Other
examples: I have no idea what a "punch-down block" or a "patch panel" is.
Maybe I've dealt with them before and would know if someone said "*That* is
a patch panel," but the fact is that most of the CC** materials only focus
on the routers and switches, and not so much on the peripheral yet
essential
devices.

So, in other words, back off when someone asks a question you think is
"beneath" you or this group. Just don't answer if you don't want to. But
there are lots of valid, basic questions out there that yes, even CCNP/IE
candidates would like answers to. It would be a shame if they felt they
weren't "allowed" to ask those questions here.

Sincerely,

Bradley J. Wilson
Who, despite being a CCNA, CCDA, MCSE, CNX-A, NNCSS, MCT and CTT, does not
know what a punch-down block is. Sue me.
