Jeff,

The second Enterprise was a 1978 C 34 and I believe she had Barient 24s. We
added some Lewmars when we raced spinnaker.

I like Richard’s electric idea, but I’m not sure you’d have room below the deck
for the motors. Suggest you talk to Lewmar, they may have bigger winches that
will us the same mounting holes.

Stus-List Re: Long Island sound

2023-08-29 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Joel,

Having lived most of my life sailing Long Island Sound, I can share a few
recommendations:

Port Jefferson is a great town with wonderful shops and restaurants. Also easy
to get in and out of the harbor.

Oyster Bay is very protected, but it takes some to get in there. Another great
town and Canterbury Ales was a favorite restaurant of mine.

On the CT shore, Cedar Island Marina in Clinton is a nice spot with a great
restaurant, pool, marine store, laundry, etc. They also have a shuttle to the
outlet mall.

Greenwich is nice stop, but so close to Port Washington, that you may want to
just go the rest. If you do hit Greenwich, Indian Harbor YC is a nice club and
it’s a short walk into town.

Places to avoid: Bridgeport (industrial), Huntington (very hot - no wind), and
Stamford (kinda run down.)

So, for Mystic, I would go from Mystic to Clinton, from Clinton to Port Jeff,
from Port Jeff to Oyster Bay, then Oyster Bay to Port Washington.

All the best,

Edd

Stus-List Re: Engine strangeness

2023-06-09 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
David,

My thinking is it’s not water, as once it stopped, it probably wouldn’t start
again until it was cleaned out. Nevertheless, check the filter and bleed the
injectors if needed.

It could be air, so try your bleed points and get the bubbles out.

As someone mentioned, there could be some crud in the line somewhere that
eventually blocks the fuel and then backs off so you can start again.

My money is on crud in the lines somewhere. Maybe your primary filter needs
replacement.

All the best,

Edd

Thomas,

4k is very cheap for trucking a boat. Does that include hauling demasting,
loading and unloading — and then restepping?

My advice is that you are probably better off selling down there and shop for a
new boat up north.

2023-02-26 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
David,

I’ve done quite a lot of night racing.

https://youtu.be/2I69h6fwL1E

Yes, if you use a spotlight to read your telltales, your night vision will be
shot. Instead, have one of your crew who is sitting more forward, use a
lower-powered light and have him continuously communicate with you “head up”,
“head down “, or “good course,”

You have a team on board. Use them.

steering at night to be a real challenge. I normally steer by the genoa
telltales. In light, shifting winds which we inevitably encounter at the
darkest hours, it is especially important to steer well to keep the boat
moving, but it is hard. We used a hand held spotlight to periodically check
the telltales, but that destroys night vision. Are there better solutions?

Very sad news indeed. I was so thankful to meet Rob at our 2012 C Rendezvous

happy to talk with owners one-on-one about their boats and answer their
questions.

Here is a photo of him at Mystic checking out the Enterprise-B, a 1990 C 37+:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QBvBegS9zXA/UG2olsTiAcI/BnU/UrjYO2tFsOs/s1600/Ball.png

I posted the photo on my Captain’s Log blog and posted a survey:

What is Rob Ball thinking?
Hot damn, I designed a really nice boat.
If only she was as fast as she looks.
So this is the boat from the blog I keep hearing about.
What did this Star Trek geek freak do to my design?

The fourth was the overwhelming winner…..

RIP Rob.

Stus-List Re: mounting chart plotter at helm

2021-12-02 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Bob,

I have seen boats that put a swivel mount on the top of the pedestal guard, but
I always found that to be too high and a safety issue (crew reaching for
something to hold on to).

I used to set mine up with one of those removable West Marine rail clamps
attached to the bracket. That enabled me to swivel the chart plotter so I could
see it from the helm or from the side.

Edd

The chartplotter is the B Vulcan 9.

We had a bullet car (for the spinnaker pole) and a ring car (for the whisker

Yet, the boat does not have a whisker pole ring/car on the front of the mast,

I'd like to rig a whisker pole for use with our 150 Genoa and a large
asymmetrical spinnaker.

Funny thing is, at the gooseneck, there is a bolt that holds the two pieces
together that has a ring mounted at the bottom. I don't think it would get the
perfect angle, but would it be that easy to rig the pole to that ring? A photo
of that bolt/ring can be found here:

The 150 and the asymmetrical will both have the clew behind the mast most if
not all the time I would be using it. In the case of the big asymmetrical, I
think it might be so far back as to bank up against the rigging, though
obviously I haven't used one on this boat as of yet.

Can anyone provide any insights?

Stus-List Re: Electric Bilge Pump

2021-10-17 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Rob,

There should be three wires coming off the bilge pump. One is ground, one is
for auto and the other is for manual (they should be color-coded based on your
operating manual — they may even have “flags” on them. Check the voltage on the
manual one when the switch is on. It may be the connection there, a blown
inline fuse, or the breaker on your switch panel.

It’s most likely the connection or a blown fuse.

Stus-List Re: leeward layline

2021-10-06 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Bob,

There is really no way to answer that as much depends on how fast your boat
sails in various win conditions. For example, in heavier breeze, you can sail
almost directly downwind. In light air, you’ll want to sail higher to maximize
your speed. The key is to keep an eye on your VMG as you race. And don’t be
afraid to gybe multiple times.

Stus-List Re: Boat Donation to Charity?

2021-09-11 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Charlie,

Here is the listing:

https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1990/c-c-37-40--3829704/

The board is pinned in place and the slot glasses over. Would not take much
work at a yard to open it all up again.

However, the boat performed better in anything up to 15 knots without the slot
or extra drag.

In 20 she performed the same.

In over 20, we saw a slight decrease in performance but was still outsailing
everything else in her PHRF range.

And you can save thousands every bunch of years maintaining the pennant
(requires a haul-out)

All the best,

Edd

Has anyone used, or have any thoughts on using the expanding foam?

Stus-List Re: Using a broker

2021-08-23 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Adam,

+1 to Josh’s comments — it really helps if you are looking to borrow money to
purchase the boat and if there are murky title and inspection issues. But, as
Josh says, if you are capable and comfortable doing these things yourself (as
many seasoned boat owners already are) then it’s really not necessary.

PS — If you are looking for slightly newer and larger than your current 1981
36, suggest you look at a 1990 37/40. I know of one that you can get for a
steal — way lower than market value.

into using a broker thinking that they are "looking out" for your interests as
well or better than you would is IMO hopeful at best. The broker gets paid
when they close the deal, not based on how much they saved you or the number of
hours worked or the number of phone calls made. It is in the interest of the
seller, the sellers agent, AND the buyers agent to close the deal quickly and
at the highest price. The only person who wins by moving slow and methodical,
searching for the best boat and the best deal is the buyer (you).

Stus-List Re: Steering cable

2021-08-12 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Dave,

If your 34+ is anything like my 37+, you should not have to remove the
pedestal. It’s tricky getting your hands in there to run the wire, but it is
doable. Certainly a DIY job. The complete change took me about 2-3 hours.

And yes, if you are starting to see the wire go, you should do the job sooner
rather than later. Mine snapped in the middle of a race (luckily, I was in
first place at the time with no boats around me, but it could have been a
disaster.)

Obviously that is a big job, which I have never done. Is it possible to

Stus-List 1990 C 37/40+ -- Another Price Reduction

2021-08-07 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Listers,

As painful as it may be, I have dropped the price again for my 1990 C 37/40+,
the Starship Enterprise. Now at $53,900.
https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1990/c-c-37-40--3829704/

WAY below market value. My last survey (April 2019) stated value at $85,000. A
lot of you know the boat. A lot of you even know this particular boat. Other
37+s, with the original engine (mine has a 2015 Beta 30) have gone for $65-$70K
in the last couple of years. This is a steal.

Why? I’m ready to pounce on the Enterprise-C, but I need this one sold first
(dock space is hard to come by down here these days — otherwise I’d be a
two-boat owner for a while.) So, I’d like to sell before the new boat goes to
someone else.

I am VERY motivated. You would be amazed at how low I will go if it means an
ultra-quick sale.

If you know anyone who is looking to upgrade from an older C or if you have a
friend who has been lusting after yours, this is a great opportunity.

Stus-List Re: Intermittent stalling

2021-08-04 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Tom,

It sounds to me like you have some "sludge” in the lines that is slowing the
fuel flow. Replace the filters (Racor and the one on the engine), flush the
lines as best you can, get all the air our of the system and see how that goes.
It may be time for a fuel tank cleaning or fuel polishing.

You can test your fuel pump by bleeding the system, which you’ll have to do
once you change the filters.

Lastly, there is the best solution for engine problems: Get the jib out.

All the best,

I tried, but I think he’s heard every joke — didn’t even crack a smile. You can

Hey Edd--I love the boat you are selling--unfortunately when I bought my 36
XL/kcb a new 37/40 kcb was out of my financial reach!!

Mine is a slightly smaller version of the 37/40 and has a very similar
centerboard arrangement. Since I do mostly club racing in the relatively thin
NC sounds/rivers, I would never consider glassing in the board(maybe if I
stopped racing) although I know of others with C who have done this for the
reasons you mention. I also agree that since both boats have a massive cb trunk
(mine is about 4700 lbs), it sails pretty well with the board (~925 lbs) up or
even glassed in.

OTOH, when I put my board down from 4.5 ft to 7.25 ft, she straightens right up
and sails to weather at least 5 degrees closer to the wind--and if I and the
crew are on our game, we are very seldom beaten to the weather mark in most
breezes above 8 knots by any boat in our size/PHRF handicap range. Downwind,
kite or not, we grind the board up (not easy or quick) and with decent
spinnaker work or just flying a genoa with a whisker pole, again we are seldom
passed (although we don't gain much either!). As you know, the cb trunk is both
massive in length, weight and width so it adds significant wetted surface
compared to a skinny (and deep) fin keel. I agree that there is some
drag/turbulence from the cb slot but both our boards have an elliptical shape
so that no matter how far the board is extended, it fully 'fills' the slot--as
opposed to many cb boats with more or less rectangular boards that do not fill
the slot with the board as the cb is dropped.

Since I haul her yearly for new bottom paint, and have the cb pennant replaced
at ~5 year intervals, my added expense with the board is minimal. However, the
yard must always do the board painting while it is hanging in travel lift--they
have an aversion to having the board fully down, and the boat very high on jack
stands! And most yards do not like to dig a hole so that the board can be
extended either!

Good luck with your next boat!

Joel,

We sealed the board in and glassed the bottom, so she’s the world’s only
shoal-draft model.

4.9 feet of draft and we saw no change in performance. In fact, without the
slot and drag, the boat actually sailed faster in anything under 10 knots of
breeze and the same up to the 15-knot range. And, no headache of thousands of
dollars of maintenance every several years (board maintenance requires a
haul-out and time in the travel lift.) See:

If you really want to restore the board, any competent yard could do it. But,
seriously, she sails better with it sealed in.

Charlie,

Interesting. I’m not all that familiar with the 36XL, but it appears to be a
design merger of the 1989-1990 34/36 series and the older 36’s. Perhaps Rob
Ball can shed some light.

We raced this boat heavily and saw no difference in pointing in the 10-knot and
under range, which was typical for Western LI Sound. In very heavy air (25+),
we did see a slight difference, but even when the board was sealed in, the 37+
was still going through the chop better than the other boats who had to head
off due to conditions.

I initially sealed the board in to keep costs and headaches down, but was
pleasantly surprised at how well the boat performed once the deed was done — in
some cases better than when it wasn’t.

All the best,

Edd

Stus-List Re: Bilge pump outflow

2021-06-03 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Dean,

That would depend on where the Y connection is located — If it is after the
vented loop, then you should be all right. Otherwise whatever gets pumped out
of one pump will likely flow back through the other one.

If you are going to put the Y closer to the pumps, you should install check
valves so flow only goes one way. However, check the specifications on your
pumps as some do not recommend using a check valve.

All the best,

Edd

attach the new bilge pump to the existing outflow piping. My question is, if I
wanted to install a second one (automatic one), slightly higher in same area,
Do I need an entirely new outflow and thru-hull or can I join it with a ‘Y’
connector to the same pipe as the first bilge pump… so they would each use same
pipe/thru-hull?

I had a look at that video - not a bad approach, would add that it’s easier to
layup the disks and other patches each onto a sheet of waxed paper then lift
that into place rather than lifting the messy epoxy patch itself. If you are
making 4 patches, stack 4 sheets of waxed paper in your layupboard before you
start. Put the precut glass in the stack too, you avoid handling things with
sticky gloves. It’s also easier to lay up multiple layers on the
board/paper than doing one at a time.
When I updated the instruments on Windstar I replaced two B displays with one
ray marine, leaving one hole. I elected not to fill the extra hole but made a
plexiglass cover the same shape and footprint of the new instrument. It’s
ready should I wish to add a second display, it looks fine to me and was a lot
less work.
http://cncwindstar.blogspot.com/search/label/Electrical%20and%20Electronics?updated-max=2020-09-01T06:50:00-04:00=20=5=false=1

Remember also that epoxy will stick to polyester but the reverse isn’t true -
should you wish to use gelcoat to finish the repair you should bear this in
mind. I’ve always felt that once you start painting the deck or mixing
materials you were heading down a slippery cosmetic slope.

Joel,

I don’t have anything that connects to internet far offshore, but in most
places I cruise, my iPhone picks up 5G service which I then tether via hotspot
to my laptop or to a WiFi repeater I have on board (if you ever see a WiFi
network named “Starfleet Subspace”, look for my boat!)

5G is fast enough for Zoom and weather, though video may get a little jumpy.

Joe,

Thanks. We’ve looked at quite a few boats over the past few months and there
were several that we didn’t like, whether it’s the style, layout, number of
levels, engines, etc. I’m not ruling out gas engines, but would prefer diesels
purely from a maintenance and safety level.

Right now, a Sea Ray 400 Sedan with Caterpillar 3126’s has really caught my
eye. Also interested in the Carver 36 Mariner, the Regal Commodore 4080 and the
Meridian 341 (though I have yet to actually get on board one — may be too
small.)

Primarily, we are looking for a 16-knot+ cruiser that we could use for a day
trip to a gulf-coast island or for a week or two cruising to the Keys or even
the Bahamas.

I’m well aware that, especially as a life-long C owner, that there will be
compromises and disappointments, but I’m looking to transition into a
less-active form of boating where the only winch on board is electric and it
drops the anchor.

Now that we are here in Florida for good, we can’t wait to explore strange new
worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations…. And, our Prime Directive will
not change — Wherever We Go, We Go Boldly — I just want to be at a speed that I
won’t need to take extra time off.

All the best,

Edd

I worked on all of them and delivered some back in the day and unless they got

Also do not be fooled by "diesel". Sailors tend to extrapolate "lasts forever"
and "sips fuel" to diesel powerboats and neither one of those things
necessarily apply. Many boosted high output diesels have short lifespans and
"economical" is in comparison to a pair of big block V8s. I worked on a SeaRay

going through 100 gallons an hour! Also the layout and décor seemed ideal for
bachelor parties - cruising not so much.
Heck - even the slow Grand Banks trawlers use a LOT of fuel compared to any
sailboat without going much faster.

Happy to hear. Though still relatively new here, I do have a pretty good “lay

and always happy to help out a fellow C’er.

And I’m not planning to go anywhere list-wise.

Joe,

Stus-List Re: 12 volt tv

2021-03-18 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Bill,

IMO — There are not many TVs and DVD players that can really hold up to marine
weather unless you are running dehumidifiers all the time. Also, those digital
antennas will get you some stations, but not a whole lot.

Suggest you look into an iPad or other big tablet — there are mounts galore on
Amazon for mounting in the cabin, you can watch or stream movies off the
internet, and you’ll have another device for navigation, internet, and, in some
cases, a repeater/control for your marine electronics.

We use my iPad air to watch movies and TV (My cable service at home comes with
free streaming so I can watch anything on the iPad that I can at home,
including off the home DVR) and I put magnetic mounts in the main saloon and in
the aft cabin over the bed.

On our last cruise, we had a beautiful night, sat out in the cockpit and
watched (big surprise) 2009’s "Star Trek”.

All the best,

Edd

2021-03-18 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Joe,

We are keeping an open mind, and much will depend one how soon and how much the
Enterprise-B sells for.

Big winds and big seas aren’t usually an issue here in Southwest Florida and
we’d like to get to places like Tampa, Captiva Island, Sanibel, Naples, the
Keys and even the east coast or Bahamas without spending days to get there. As
Warp 7 (7 knots), Captiva is about 7 hours away. And, it would be great to hop
down to Boca Grande or Port Charlotte for lunch without leaving before sunrise
:-)

I think we are leaning towards a sedan bridge boat with an open cockpit. Ones
that we have liked so far are the Meridian 341, the Carver 36 Mariner, the Sea
Ray 400 SB, the Regal 4080 Commodore, Carver 41 CMY, and so on.

I’m well aware of the fuel and maintenance costs along with the issues of
docking (I plan to add thrusters, if the boat doesn’t have them), especially
since my slip is pretty tight and requires some maneuvering to pull in — I
couldn’t single-hand dock with this boat now anyway.

All the best,

Edd

I had to deliver a Krogen 40 once and that was kind of cool, it would chug

got kinda interested in having a Dyer 29 as a high speed touring boat, they’ll
run 15-20 knots economically in some pretty nasty weather and have enough room

price run-up has put that idea out of reach for now.

We are running some numbers here and it is basically a choice between upgrading
and replacing. Coquina is 48 years old now and it is time to do some $$$
upgrades or buy another boat with much of the work done. We found a used C 40
that looks gorgeous below, the interior beats most used boats of that era. She
seems in good shape, but the engine is original with 3,000+ hours. An Atomic 4
per the manual should be rebuilt at 3,000 hours if FWC, a raw water cooled
version would be very lucky to get that far in salt water. The Yanmar is FWC. I
frequently hear that diesels can last 10,000 hours, but then again a
significant number of boats from that era are for sale with new engines.
Also re the rod rigging – the mast is out for the winter. With the rigging
easily accessed, what would the cost be of a rigging inspection to assure that
the rod is still good.

Stus-List Re: Broken rod rigging attachment for babystay deck at keel - 37/40+

2021-02-16 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Bruce,

I believe the rod is a connection from the baby stay track to the keel. If
your baby stay is disconnected (as mine is), I don’t think there is any force
on that rod.

I’ve never experienced any pumping and I’ve sailed the Enterprise is all kinds
of conditions.

I think you can sail without it - as long as you disconnect the baby stay from
the track.

But I could be wrong. Another possibility is that you should total the boat and
buy another, one that is about 70 miles south of you :-).

Stus-List Re: Bilge leak

2021-01-19 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Mike,

The first thing to check is if the water is salt water or “fresh" water. If
it’s fresh water, check your hatches and windows for leaks, as well as all of
the places where you have deck controls attached to the boat (it could be a
leak in one of your jib tracks or the traveler or along your toe rail.

The best way to check where is to grab a bucket full of water and pour it over
your hatches, deck fittings and sections of your toe rail - then see if your
bilge is affected.

Another possibility is condensation/moisture.

If its salt water, it’s most likely the keel joints or your stuffing box.

All the best,

Edd

I'm at a complete loss for ideas on this and would like to ask the group for
some suggestions.

I have had my C 33 mkii for 6 years now. There has always been a small leak
in the bilge, i.e. water is actually seeping in through the forward bilge wall
about half-way down.

The bilge is about 2 feet deep and starts about a foot aft of the mast step.

The PO had a grounding a couple of years before I bought the boat. About 2
years after I bought the boat I brought it to Bristol Marine and had the mast
step reinforced (this was a know problem with 33's) and they also dropped the
keel and then rebedded it.

This work stopped the seeping, but it re-appeared a couple of years ago. I
sanded and applied barrier coat around the keel stub joint and the keel stub.
This seemed to help, but the water ingress would start again about a month or
so after launch.

I, and several others, have inspected under the boat after haul-out and none of
us have seen any sign of moisture, cracks, C smile, etc. It looks perfect.

The amount of water is small. Maybe a pint glass every 2-3 weeks.

One boat repair guy suggested that I re-bed all my hatches. I didn't
understand that at all.

I suppose the putty in the keel stub could be compromised. But I still don't
understand how water is getting in there.

Any ideas on the source of water??

I suppose I could just apply some glass to the inside of the bilge, but that
doesn't really solve the problem. Should I drill into the forward end of the
bilge to drain the water and then inject some sort of epoxy mix?

Thanks in advance for your consideration!

Stus-List Re: Acid flushing heat exchanger?

2021-01-13 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Bruce,

There are a few marine Diesel engine maintenance books out there, and your
engine manual may have enough info on that alone.

To check the tube stack, you’ll need to remove the end caps and slide it out.
Do a check for corrosion and clean. If you see corrosion or holes, replace it
($200-300). Replace the o-rings on the end caps as well.

All the best,

Edd

Stus-List Re: Acid flushing heat exchanger?

2021-01-13 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Bruce,

How long has it been since you last cleaned the exchanger, checked the tube
stack and replaced the coolant?

It should be done at least once every five years, including replacing the
o-rings.

Barnacle Buster is a good product, especially down here, but not to be used
instead of normal maintenance.

All the best,

Edd

Ted,

I would go with Doyle. Nothing beats having a local sailmaker to come out and
measure and adjust after the sails are on — you may need to have a spreader
patch moved, add tell tales, whatever. Local is best.

Quantum sails with almost identical specs comes in about 400 bucks lower but
are made in Sri Lanka. Service is relatively close on on the east coast of Fl.
Given between the two, what might you buy.

Garmin GMS 10 Network Expander
Garmin GSD 22 Digital Remote Sounder

There is no sounder because it is being used for the new GPS unit. The GPS

I thought I’d put this out there in case someone might benefit from these

Listers,

Based on several circumstances, I am now heavily considering putting my C
37/40+ on the market. Before I go through the process of listing it with an
agent, if anyone knows of someone in the market for a 1990 model that has a
2015 Beta 30 engine and many other upgrades over the last few years, please
have them reach out to me. I’ll make a final decision whether to sell or not
after Thankgsgiving, but I am leaning that direction.

As to what’s next, I can only refer you to a scene in the film “First Contact”
when the crew is evacuating the soon-to-be-destroyed Enterprise. In that scene,
Dr. Crusher asks Captain Picard if he thinks there will be another. He replies,
“Plenty of letters left in the alphabet."

Another project on my new-to-me C is fixing the headliner. It’s actually
in really good shape except there’s a number of the white plastic connectors

them? Any help folks?

Stus-List Re: Propane Stove - Not Staying Lit

Josh,

So each burner has its own thermocouple? Any ideas on how to service/replace
them?

Thermocouple is bad. It is the safety device which ensures that the propane is

Listers,

Two of the burners on my three-burner stove do not stay lit. They will flame
up, but when I let go of the dial, they die out. One is working perfectly.

Any suggestions on a fix?

Edd
