Re: Stus-List Boat Names
It took us 4 years to rename our boat. We bought it in Lake George and hauled it to her new home on Lake Champlain and the 1st thing I did was peel off the vinyl lettering of her old name, Jack Rabbit. The former owner also applied a giant, two actually, one on each side of the hull, near the stern, vinyl cartoon character of a Jack rabbit. Pretty ugly. I'm an Irish citizen, so I wanted something Irish, but then a friend said she'd hate to see me call the Coast Guard in an emergency and try to get them to understand the name of the boat in Irish. For example, if I named the boat "Seaworthy" in Irish, the call would go like this; "May Day, May Day, this is Muiracmhainneach!" "Say again, sir? Could you spell that?" As I'm sinking I'm teaching Irish to the Coast Guard. My partner never sailed before meeting me, and as we heeled over she'd hit the deck and scream, so keeping true to my Irish roots I thought I'd name the boat "Screaming Banshee" (in English), an Irish fairy maiden, who, unfortunately, foreshadows doom. "Come on aboard, oh, don't worry, this sail isn't doomed, really, it's just a name." But as cruisers, I didn't want to be plodding along and have another cruiser fly past us with us sporting "Screaming" in our name. So, long story short, we named her Banshee (in a Celtic script, of course!). My Shields had quite a small transom, so "Raven" was pretty much all that would fit on there. At one time there was a 9' Davidson dinghy at our club called "Child of the Sun and the Sky and the Deep Blue Sea" The name took up the whole side of the boat. Re: Stus-List boat names
I heard of a boat named “Ruthless” as the owner’s wife, Ruth, would not set foot on the boat. A friend of mine owned a Yamaha 36 named “Made in Japan”. Another friend owned a J-24 named “Jail Bait”. My wife and I towed that J-24 across the country to participate in the 1989 J-24 Worlds in Kingston. A lot of truck drivers took a close look at my wife as they passed, especially in So Dakota. I took part in a 1985 Transpac charter of a Barnett 52 named “Climax”. “Climax” was owned by two lady part doctors. I sailed several Sauza Cups (Lahaina YC, Maui) on a Choate 40 named “Phoenix” as the owner’s previous boat burned to the waterline after his spouse over-primed the alcohol stove and the fire got out of control. I named the Ericson 30+ I owned in the 80’s “Helen Highwater”. My father-in-law saw that on a painting of a WW2 bomber with a provocatively dressed Helen added for emphasis. Ideally it'd even be unique in the US Coast Guard database (which you can check online), in case you ever want to become a documented vessel. If you're into music, a lot of our ideas revolved around song names - High Hopes (Pink Floyd), An Awesome Wave (Alt-J), Tessellate (Alt-J). Although some names - like An Awesome Wave - can seem like they're tempting the fates / sea gods. I wouldn't pick a name like Rogue Wave because for one it might be bad luck, and if you ever do get into trouble, people will say "I told you so." -Patrick S/V Violet Hour, LF38 Seattle, WA On Wed, Sep 16, 2015 at 8:49 PM, wrote: From: djhaug...@juno.com To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Cc: Date: Wed, 16 Sep 2015 21:53:59 -0400 Subject: Stus-List boat names OK coming up with a new name for our new boat is proving very difficult. I guess I was looking at an older IFC book; I found another dated 1917 (“International Code of Signals, American Edition”), in which “AMF” means a compass bearing of 88° West. Of course, in this one, “MGF” means “an equal number of” and “MIT” means “every”; so there must be a newer code now, where the “M”s are for “Medical”. I looked through the codes and didn’t find ANY that started with Alpha; all the three-letter codes started with Bravo (the first one is “BCD”, abandon). not to spoil the fun, but the International Flag Code is hardly ever used to spell anything. Each combination of flags has its own meaning (very seldom in any way related to the letters used). My boat was named "Sea Swan", I couldn't handle it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hd1Byw98JRc don't ask me about the renaming ceremony, we almost sunk the boat! Also, seems like great news when your girlfriend is willing to help out but it seems like whenever she's around we get a lot more "stop and talks" which equals less work done. A few years ago we spent the night at Gulfport (MS) Yacht Club prior to a race. Just after dawn a T-storm rolled through. We heard a click-POW!! as lightning struck extremely close by. I jumped out of bed to assess damage. I poked my head up the companionway hatch to look and saw another boat had taken an empty slip next to us during the night. The boat's name? "Lightning Rod". My first boat was named "Luffer" when I bought it. That was just not me. I had just returned from a trip to New Zealand where I saw the Whitbread Race venue. It was the year "Steinlager 2" won. I renamed the boat "Steinlocker". Dennis C. Re: Stus-List boat names
Ahoy, When the time came, we were weighing heavily on a new boat name. My sailing partner was more on the side of Greek Proto-godesses like 'Ananke', which I found a bit much for a decent but modest 30-footer. I wanted to avoid silly stuff, though it always cracks me up to see puns like 'Reel Estate' [which BTW was a motorboat under tow] 'E-Z Pass' and such. Anyway, we battled for weeks over bird names, wind names, sea names, etc.pp. I thought the name should be clear and practical on the radio, reflect our personalities and especially the personality of the vessel, and after long discussions we came down to the core of things. 'Messing About' is was. People who know the 1908 novel 'The Wind in the Willows' by Kenneth Grahame laugh out loud right away when they see it. People who don't know the book still get a kick out of it. Recently I stumbled unto the book shop 'Toad Hall' in Rockport (near Gloucester, MA), and it really cracked them up as well. The only problem in encountered so far are radio calls: "US Coast Guard, US Coast Guard, this is the sailing vessel 'Messing About'." Well, so be it. It depends on your performance (and I tell you, it turns out to be a tongue twister, especially when being tired. Please read it out loud if you don't believe me). To explain why we chose this name, I quote for y'all the beginning of this wonderful story: "What?" cried the Rat, open-mouthed: "Never been in a—you never—well I—what have you been doing, then?" "Is it so nice as all that?" asked the Mole shyly, though he was quite prepared to believe it as he leant back in his seat and surveyed the cushions, the oars, the rowlocks, and all the fascinating fittings, and felt the boat sway lightly under him. "Nice? It's the only thing," said the Water Rat solemnly as he leant forward for his stroke. "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing—absolute nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing," he went on dreamily: "messing—about—in—boats; messing—" "Look ahead, Rat!" cried the Mole suddenly. It was too late. The boat struck the bank full tilt. The dreamer, the joyous oarsman, lay on his back at the bottom of the boat, his heels in the air. "—about in boats—or with boats," the Rat went on composedly, picking himself up with a pleasant laugh. "In or out of 'em, it doesn't matter. Nothing seems really to matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular; and when you've done it there's always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not. Re: Stus-List boat names we don't like now - renaming ceremony
There are probably many options for the proper renaming ceremony, but the one I am aware of has to be done on water and involves reversing (preferably under sail). If you search on the internet a number of options would show up. I found one that involved scuttling the boat (under the old name) and refloating it (under the new one). We might be superstitious, but I am not sure if that would work so well. Regardless of what you do, make sure that you appease the Sea Gods (Poseidon, Neptune or some other one of your liking) and the God of Wind (Aeolus). This includes, but is not limited to, spilling and drinking serious amounts of alcoholic beverages of various kinds. Apparently, champagne is not the only one that can be used. My last boat was a Lightning that was officially named TBA (to be announced). At each regatta, the crew came up with a new name for the weekend and used electrical tape to apply it to the boat. The Seinfeld tv show was big at that time and provided lots of good names. A few of my favorites were “sponge worthy”, “shrinkage”, “spectackular”, but my favorite was “clockwise swirl” which was used for a match race weekend. James Delaney C&C 38 Oriental From: Ronald B. Re: Stus-List boat names
When I was a teenager we had a McVay Minuette. Is a 19 ft boat based off the Bluenose Sloop design with a full keel and attached rudder etc... Had a lot of fun with that boat. We would sheet everything in tight and turn beam on to wind to see how far we could heel the boat. Usually the leeward rail, winch, coaming and seat were under water. Decided to name the boat. Took out a Thesaurus and looked up synonyms for heeling. The two candidates were Flat Out and Full Tilt. We chose Full Tilt Many years later when my wife and I purchased our first boat it was a Paceship P23. I wanted to call it Full Tilt 2. My wife wanted to name it after our daughters Chelsea and Sarah and name it Chelsara. Both were rejected and we opted for their nicknames and called the boat Monkeybear. Our friends thought it the worst name ever and when the boat was eventually sold it was promptly renamed "Steady Pace" Our next boat was a Hinterhoeller Niagara 26. It was called "Waratah II" which is something of a nice breeze in Swahili or some other language. The name had to go. Was getting pressure at home to get a second cat as a pet. The compromise was if I relented and allowed another pet I would be able to name the boat what I wanted (she knew would be full tilt 2). What was not known was the name was going on port and starbord aft and was over five feet long and a foot high so that it could be read. Was in the Blade Runner font so looked fast even. Was the best combination of font, bold size and name I could have used. The next owners have kept the name and still race the boat After a number of years we no longer needed a cabin so we sold the Niagara and purchased a J27. The boat came with the name "Nut Case". We liked the name and kept it. Previous names for that boat were "Lickety Split" and "Reckless Disregard". I would have kept any of those three names. Once sold the boat was eventually renamed "Line Drive" Our current boat came with the name Persistence prominently displayed on the transom. "Padanaram" was also there and took us a while to learn to pronounce (until some people from that area happened by one day). I liked the name Persistence and the fact that it was already on the boat made me like it more. Was getting pressured to change the name to Nut Case or something similar so I registered the boat as Persistence V out of Halifax and just changed the port on the transom Sometimes the simplest solution is to keep the name already with the boat when you purchased it. Unless of course you hate that name Mike Persistence Halifax ___ Email address: CnC-List@cnc-list.com To change your list preferences, including unsubscribing -- go to the bottom of page at: http://cnc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/cnc-list_cnc-list.com

Re: Stus-List boat names
Naming a boat is almost as hard as naming a child. I'd consider the names of some of the old America's Cup boats - courageous, intrepid etc. I also like the names of the Navy academy boats such as gallant, defiant. I had a neighbor who named his boat White Star, then found out that was the line that owned the Titanic. I'd avoid those! I considered naming my boat after a particularly litigious opponent, as she paid for it! Good ting you have a large transom, because after you put Mattapoisett on the transom there may not be room for too much else. Re: Stus-List boat names
Danny, Five doctors over here owned a boat together. You never knew who was aboard at any time as they were all high powered medicos who were on call to various hospitals. They called their boat "Witchdoctor". It makes more sense heard than spelled. Another notable was two fellows I knew well. One was deaf - the other blind. The blind fellow was the best sail trimmer I've ever seen as he knew from the tension in the sheets. The deaf guy was the helmsman. There was always at least one other person aboard as crew. They called their boat "Hear no Evil - See No Evil". Re: Stus-List boat names
Hi Danny, Good luck in your search, do take some time with it. Good timing on my part to be commenting after Edd. A most important consideration... are you using the boat for cruising or racing? If for racing then the primary consideration is how your ego will fare when your peers consider her name. For this situation, something cute and witty is appropriate. One of my favourites is Dilligaf (as in, do I look like I give a...). If for cruising. Can she wear your wife's name (and will you be married to her longer than you have the boat)? Years ago, when we got the old hooker as a hull & deck project the name issue was not easy. After some time I took a photo (this is a rectangular paper with an image on it) of the boat and wrote my wife's name on the bow, using shadowed letters. I showed her the mocked up photo and asked, "What do you think of this name for the boat?" Melody Dawn, her first and middle names. She cried. We had a name and kept that boat for 18 years. It's the racing types that will ask the questions about Jane. Cheers, Russ At 06:53 PM 16/09/2015, you wrote: OK coming up with a new name for our new boat is proving very difficult. Re: Stus-List boat names
When we were choosing our boat name recently we had a few guidelines: - No puns, silly names, or motor boat names ("Master Baiter") - Relatively easy to pronounce, spell, and understand over the VHF - Uniqueness - some names are very common (Amazing Grace, Second Wind, etc) and it'd be unfortunate to have the same name as someone else in the marina or sailing region. I wouldn't pick a name like Rogue Wave because for one it might be bad luck, and if you ever do get into trouble, people will say "I told you so." -Patrick S/V Violet Hour, LF38 Seattle, WA On Wed, Sep 16, 2015 at 8:49 PM, wrote: > From: djhaug...@juno.com > To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com > Cc: > Date: Wed, 16 Sep 2015 21:53:59 -0400 > Subject: Stus-List boat names > OK coming up with a new name for our new boat is proving very difficult. > > I thought I would throw it out to you guys for some ideas! > > Maybe you came across something sometime and thought wow what a great name > for a boat! > > I can't believe this is so difficult... Re: Stus-List boat names
Danny, There are lots of very innovative boat names over here in Australia. Rather than bore you with a whole raft of them, I'll mention two that have always stuck out in my mind. The first is "Waikikamukau". For all the world this name looks very Kiwi (New Zealand) or even Polynesian. The boat owner was constantly pounded with questions about the origin of this name as you might imagine. But stop scratching your head and try to pronounce it. Then you'll start to realise he was having a piece of everyone. Just in case you are having trouble, I'll break it up for you: Wai-kik-a-mu-kau The other stand out name came from a skipper who was entering his yacht into upcoming Australian and world championship regattas. He turned up to register his brand new boat about an hour before the deadline. Because he had no name for the boat they wouldn't accept his entry. He walked out of th eyacht club and right in front of him was a road condition warning sign. He immediately walked back in and registered his boat as "Slippery When Wet". Of all the boat-naming rationale I've heard I like yours the most. Another "dead" song that I've always thought would make a fine name for a boat: Ripple - but that's almost too easy. Back in the 80s I used to play Love and Rockets and saw them live a couple of times. My wife at the time and I named our first sailboat: Kundalini Express My subsequent wife and I named the next: Nautisaurus. Not from any song title - just "water lizard" love that name. The new owner kept the name and really likes it. The current boat 35/3 we named "Mr. Bop" is the title of a unique poem written by a very good and very bohemian "starving artist" friend of ours who now lives in Bulgaria. He was quite a "dead head" himself as was his father. The previous name "Small Favors" just didn't hit the right nerve. Mark, I have to break it to you, "42" is not obscure. In a similar vein I was amazed when I had the Tardis (in 2002, pre Doctor Who relaunch) how many people - including the kids driving the tender - knew the name. Mark, if you go with 42, think about spelling it out, FORTY-TWO. Avoid names that are hard to pronounce. There’s a boat at our marina with a difficult Italian name that starts with a V, has a G in the middle, and ends with an A. Unfortunately for the owner, we all refer to it as THE VIAGRA BOAT. Ugh. Our C&C is named BADNESS with the hailing port Blackbeard Island, Georgia. It suits my husband perfectly as he looks (and sometimes acts) like a pirate, plus his name is Roger. Original owner named it WHISPER, a name that just didn’t sound like us. Good luck! Looks like you’re getting lots of good suggestions from this group. OK. So since were listing names for Mark, I thought I would share the list of potential names my former Admiral and I developed when renaming Imzadi (formerly Scarlet Fever, which obviously needed to be changed.). Sometimes the best name is inspired by an appropriate quotation. Before I get to my list, here is my favorite Boat Quote as a thought starter: There is more to sailing than ropes and winches, cleats and bulging sails. There are faraway places and the ever changing light, and the silence, and a great peace at the bottom of your soul. The two names I have in the wings are: "Spider Hider" for a larger cruising boat. The logo would be a spider web with a "?" in the middle of it. There are always spider webs on the lifelines. "Exce$$ieve" for a race boat. There would be a funnel under the $$ in the name with tiny $'s coming out the bottom of the funnel. \ / || $ Dennis C. My dad always said that a boat name should easily fit on the transom and be clear enough that you don't need to spell it over the radio for a dockmaster when you call. I like the idea that the name shouldn't be embarrassing when you're making a serious radio call, ie "Securite, this is the sailing vessel, (sounded really clever after a few rums)..." Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Still hoping to stumble on one the feels just right!! Most of the chiropractic terms don't work great for me - I never did get the Big Idea myself so I practice more as a spine care specialist rather than an alternative healer. Dr. Voodoo reminds me of a patient who called me his 'Witch Doctor'. So far Cracked or just Crack are still in the lead for me. 42 still hanging in there - my stethoscope bought when I was in college came with a free engraving, everyone put "Dr. x" - mine says 'The Answer is 42' - not one person got it! I like 42 sam :-) Original Message From: M Bod Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2014 8:49 AM To: C&C list Reply To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Subject: Stus-List Boat names I've been saving several of the messages on how to remove old boat names. Planning on re-naming my CS30 this spring. Current name is Sea Fever - which is not bad, but does not speak to me personally. But I'm still not totally committed that I have the right need name. Like Steven I have had a running list of names that piqued my interest. I'm hoping to find something short, meaningful, unique and a bit witty. Love some of the names I see from this list (Oxygen, The Office, etc) - but I don't want to steal a unique name. My current favourite is Cracked - I am a chiropractor after all, plus I've been told multiple times that my views on the world can be twisted. Also relates back to the fact I was (and maybe still am a bit) concerned about the small cracks in the bilge ribs. Other front runners - 42 (The meaning of life, the universe, and everything - maybe too obscure) - Vita Brevis (Life is Short in Latin) - Therapy - Exit Strategy I could also use Bigger Picture (after my current Big Picture Mirage 24) I was tempted to go with 'Handbasket' - as in 'Where are we going. And how are we going to get there' - but don't want the negative implications it carries. Any brilliant and witty thoughts (or critiques) welcome Mark ___ This List is provided by the C&C Photo Album http://www.cncphotoalbum.com CnC-List@cnc-list.com ___ This List is provided by the C&C Photo Album http://www.cncphotoalbum.com CnC-List@cnc-list.com
Re: Stus-List Boat names
All our dinghies have been called "Vita Brevis"; I'm waiting for the right mothership to be good enough to be called "Ars Longa". "Randoboat"? Backwards it's Tao Bodnar.
