Looks like a case of "Obfuscation" to me.

What "security failures." Should you truthfully be calling it
"discovery of potential flaws?" It ain't a "security failure" if it
hasn't been exploited and it hasn't. Just like you are potentially
deceased, but I'm sure you don't want us to consider you dead. By
your faulty logic we are all dead already.

> ...as Apple market share augments, its desirability as a target...

This is more faulty logic. Products with large market shares do not
have to be defective. You use one company, M$, as your model and come
up with wild assertions. You are not thinking straight.

> the (heretofore smug) users

"Smug" carries too much baggage to be accurate. "Smug" implies
excessive pride. Mac users pride is hard earned and based on real
achievement. Only someone with an excessive Windows inferiority
complex would use the word "smug."

Speaking of having an excessive Windows inferiority complex, did you
catch the Ballmer anti-Apple tirade...
http://blogs.reuters.com/mediafile/2009/07/31/ballmer-skeptical-of-
apple-share-gains/

"Share versus Apple, you know, we think we may have ticked up a
little tick, but when you get right down to it, it's a rounding
error," he said. "Apple's share change, plus or minus from ours, they
took a little share a couple quarters, we took share back a couple
quarters. But Apple's share globally cost us nothing. Now, hopefully,
we will take share back from Apple, but you know, Apple still only
sells about 10 million PCs, so it is a limited opportunity."

*** Shipments of Apple's Mac PCs rose 4 percent in the June quarter,
while the global PC market shrank 5 percent, according to Gartner. ***

Radical right? Seriously? Oh right, that's to turn the mob against me, or
it's the product of your one-dimensional world-view. I can't really tell

I also experimented by going to the CARS site. Nothing at all as
was described by Beck and his shrilly shilling "News Anchor" who was
hosting his diatribe took place. No "Warning" dialog box was seen by
me upon clicking on every link on the site that i could find

. This "News Anchor," some hottie brunette, was saying that the site
was installing "malware cookies" on the computers of folks who were
navigating to the site. She is clearly an IT expert as well as having
been a beauty queen prior to being hired up by Fox to be pimped to the
viewing public.

I saw that the computer Beck was using, one that he claims to have
seen the dialog box on that said visitor's computers would be taken
over by the government and become government property, was an HP
running Windows. My machine is a Mac. Perhaps my test was therefore
invalid, and the alleged government possession of one's computer is
limited solely to Windows users. At any rate, Beck could not get that
alleged dialog box to appear while he was on the air, and he reverted
instead to displaying some text on screen to simulate what he claims
to have seen. Too bad that outright lying on news programs is not
illegal. His ass is covered and he knows it.

> ... Mac hater...

Yes, that must be why I want the FCC to piss off and Apple to do what it
chooses to do with its own products. Brilliant deduction, Sherlock.

And let's be perfectly clear about this: I don't hate Macs or Apple. Apple
fleeces its customers with its profit margins, but its customers happily and
knowingly give over a portion of their wealth without questioning this.
But, it's no skin off my nose if they choose to do such a foolish thing. I
have other purchasing options.

Apple certainly makes some very nice hardware with tight engineering. While
I don't agree with all of their design choices, Apple's design standards are
top flight. OS X is very nice, easy on the eyes and has features worth
admiring. Windows should be so easy to upgrade or to install apps. The
iPhone obviously has tremendous value that a substantial portion of the
smart phone market agrees with and buys enthusiastically in great amounts.
It's just not an enthusiasm that I share.

It's Apple's user base that sucks, not its products. An obnoxious, smug,
asinine, shun-worthy group if ever there was.

I don't know what they are spending. Looking at the code I would

Lets be clear about this. Beck flat out says on that Fox News piece
that the site is CARS.GOV and he warns all of America, clearly meaning
we the people, not to log onto that site. He makes no mention
whatsoever about any other website, such as the one that you have
pointed out. He does say that dealers who log onto their area of the
site, which is password protected and not available to the general
public, are presented with this notice.

However, with the help of the brunette ex-beauty queen News
anchorette, both he and she then devolve into a rant about how
ordinary Americans, seeking to take advantage of this CARS program,
will find themselves mired in a morass of "malware cookies" and
turning over their computers to the federal government. Therein you
find the lies and distortions.

By the way, who was this last President who totaled our economy?

No, but a comment in general. We got a wireless mouse/keyboard combo
once a couple years back. Turns out it's not nearly as useful as it
seems at first. After the tenth time in an hour you rock forward to
read something on the screen, you end up just staying there. The
keyboard rarely leaves the desk after the first few days.

Similarly, game playing is impossible without the keyboard being
stable in one spot.

Apparently their website is quite a bit more than just pretty for
what we paid. According to Beck and the anchorette, that website has
capabilities similar to what one would find at the NSA, capable of
taking over your computer and doing anything it wants with any and all
of your data, even turning it over to foreign governments, such as
Pakistan or Absurdistan.

Apple always downplays the positives and emphasizes the negatives and

Yes, but those are all PC keyboards mostly with separate mice except for
the expensive ( $185 )one made by Apple and it has no integral pointer /
mousepad.

The reason I am looking for such is to turn a white Tiger macbook with a
broken unreadable screen into a multimedia center machine (mostly for
downloading and playing movies) by placing it in the cabinet and hooking
the video to a the large screen LDC digital TV and adding an external
drive to it.

It's working great except that it requires getting up from the couch and
kneeling before the TV cabinet for every adjustment etc. and THAT is a
REAL nuisance and kind of defeats everything.

(So would having a keyboard with a separate mouse as there is no where
to place the mouse but one's lap.)

Will PC keyboards work with a mac and if so does anyone know of one ...
PC or Mac ... that has a built in pointer?

I see some here:
http://www.google.com/products?q=wireless+mac+keyboard+with+built+in+touchpad&aq=f

Has anyone tried this ... or are there other kind of remote controls
available for a macbook?

Someone mentioned a free app for the iPhone?

It seems like the Mac Bluetooth keyboard and a rollerball mouse might
work for you.
But you'll have to check if they would have enough range for you. The
rollerball range might be a problem.

with trackpads (in the $125 range) and one ... the Logitech MediaBoard
Pro Bluetooth Keyboard for $69 !! that is meant for use (30' range)
with the Play Station 3.
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/gaming/playstation_3/all/devices/3616&cl=us,en#reviews

At Smalldog it mentions that this keyboard is programmable for the Mac
but Logitech says nothing about that or usuge with computers ... just
mentions playstation 3.
http://www.smalldog.com/product/71670/atfgc

I can't find a down loadable manual at Logitech or elsewhere... :(

I'm not a gamer... does anyone know if a keyboard for Play Station 3
could work with a computer ... specifically a white Tiger MacBook?

There are differences between shines and monuments/memorials.

One is for the purposes of remembrance one is for the purpose of worship.

Most of the ones you mentioned are no longer with us, having been
destroyed when the worship of those folks fell into abeyance.

Honestly I think a monument should be pout up for all former US
presidents. It is no ordinary individual who becomes president and
it is an awesome responsibility.

Agree with them or don't agree with them, it is not a free ride. I
cannot remember what they say but it ages a man fast to be president.

I think it depends what you want to do with it in your lap. I just
use Command-+ to enlarge the font if I have trouble reading it. ANd
since I'm not a gamer, that's not an issue. Besides, if you need to
use it for gaming, just sit it on the desk. My DiNovo Edge has been
very reliable and I don't loose the signal. It is Bluetooth,
however,so you do need that on your machine.

Reasonable and thoughtful. However, this speech was given over 4-1/2
years ago. Since then scientists have accumulated much additional
evidence. If he were alive today I'm sure he would revise his position.

Agreed. My point was that what some worship, others loathe. A
statue / monument does not make someone great, it only makes them
popular with those as had the pull to erect the monument.

Tony is correct.

Connection tends to wander off and on at times too. Not so good for

Sunk costs is a reasonable ...er... reason for not investing in a new
platform.

Unlike Uncle Moneybags Piwowar, some of us have budgets and limited

Re: [CGUYS] Gubmint computer grab

2009-08-02 Thread Constance Warner
Oh, do get real. In the 1930's, there was 25% unemployment [much
higher in some places], starvation, ecological collapse, foreign wars
on the horizon, large numbers of internally displaced people, native
fascism, a growing U.S. communist party [partly supported by the
Soviet Union], and an incipient class war. Working conditions in
some places in this country [like my home state] were basically Early
Industrial Revolution--and, if you examine the history, it really was
as bad as you think. Things were going to hell very, very fast, and
it took drastic action to drag the country back from the brink.
Complete recovery took awhile, but the early measures did help.

The New Deal saved the country from a lot worse situation than we
have at present. In fact, FDR's most notable achievement may have
been saving capitalism; to a lot of people at the time, communism and
similar systems were looking pretty good, compared to the mess that
they blamed, rightly or wrongly, on laissez-faire capitalism and Wall
Street speculators. (And no cracks about "communism is what we have
now," please. As an amateur Kremlinologist with a special interest
in the satellite countries--remember them?--I know the difference,
and so do you.)

I'm a little chagrined that I let myself get baited into joining the
fray. I just have to believe that the statements about FDR ruining
the economy are something in the matter of a joke, or at least an
exaggeration. But in my home state, the scars of the Great
Depression are still visible, so I don't think it's particularly funny.

And as for worship: I don't care who worships what, really. I'm
actually more concerned about exaggerations and outright lies about
programs like the cash for clunkers program and other proposals of
this administration. I won't even speculate about the motives of
people who lie and exaggerate, because they're sufficiently evident
not to need further exposition here. The economy may be in better
shape than it was last fall, and some of the current programs seem to
be having some effect. But the chances are NOT ZERO that we could
still have another Great Depression; and certain news [sic]
reporters, by trying to tear down any Democratic program they see,
and in particular by lying about those programs, seem to be pushing
us toward the edge of the cliff.
