had problems with the ls120 diskette drive on my system...actually any boot diskettes. i dislike the old 3 1/2 standard drives because they're slow, still take an irq, and small in size. Now an ls120 diskette will hold 120 mb and move almost twice as fast. since cd-r's have become more popular and are considered standard devices, it too could be considered a "standard" for rescue media. note: there is no real limitations (yet) to the miscellaneous "rescue" tools that you can toss into it. i'm presently downloading www.demolinux.org and will check it out later.looks real spiffy of which, a newbie won't have to mess with command line stuff anymore! sure if ms got thier hands on this idea, they'd sell the rescue iso/cd-r for about $100 (ransom moneylol).
Re: [Cooker] Another Cooker ISO issue
i use rsync...once you d/l all the files for cooker, rsync will only update the files (rpm's) that have changed on the ftp. it really helps, but still isn't a replacement for faster speeds. reserve about 600 mb of hdd space for the /cooker files and rsync it overnight. most times, there's only ~5 rpm's to d/l or so. [Cooker] kernel 2.2.15-0.8
After upgrading to 2.2.15-0.8 I can't boot my cooker. The kernel after starting init trashing the harddrive and totally stuck in the depmods step "Finding module dependencies". Does anybody experienced this or it is only my machine? I had to "borrow" the 2.2.15 -2.5.0 kernel and modules from redhat 6.2-beta. (my rsync deletes the last stable kernel package).

Re: [Cooker] Getting there
Your whole network's not getting started. Go to /etc/rc.d/init.d and #network start Look for errors & fix them. If it says, "Network Starting: [OK]" run ifconfig. You will see info on lo & ethx's. Then ensure there are symlinks in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d & rc5.d called S10network. If you have a firewalling script, put a symlink in these folders called S08firewalling (pointing to your script) and it will start before the network. Add host mappings to your hosts file. RE: [Cooker] Getting there
Extremely strange. Here's some details.. Make sure you have a file named "/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-lo". If you don't, it's a plain text file. Create it. Permissions on mine are root/root 755. Here's some contents: DEVICE=lo IPADDR=127.0.0.1 NETMASK=255.0.0.0 NETWORK=127.0.0.0 BROADCAST=127.255.255.255 ONBOOT=yes NAME=loopback After creating this file, or verifying it's existance, use the command "ifup lo" to start it without rebooting. The line above, ONBOOT=yes, will ensure that it's started from now on during boot. If yours is set to no, fix it. If for some reason THAT doesn't work (generates an error), you have a SERIOUS problem. [Cooker] Getting there
I posted an e-mail regarding the java debugger supplied with the Sun Java SDK. Well, after much messing around I have found that Sun, bless 'em, missed one file out of the SDK tar ball (it was in ALL the RC releases !) and didn't copy a library file to /usr/lib ! (Thanks to Blackdown for that by suggesting using strace.) Any way, to another problem. The java debugger now complains about not being able to connect to the local host. So, I tried ping localhost, and ping 127.0.0.1 5 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss Why doesn't this work anymore !?!?!?!?!? It used to work, well when I say used to, I haven't tried ping'ing for ages and ages. Anyway, is this why I can't connect to localhost, or is this a red herring. Help please, Owen

[Cooker] Another Cooker ISO issue
Here in Juneau we have cable modem access so downloading massive files quickly is not so much a problem. However; We may be relocating to the interior in a more remote area which has only a 2.2kps connection if you are lucky. Others who are much more knowledgable than I are in this same situation so I was wondering... Is there, or would there be, anyway to get an ISO Cooker image burned to CD perhaps like once a month or two upon request, or... ? I know one can get cheap LM 7.0 etc from various companies but not ones closer to the "Edge". I personally would even be willing to consider some sort or subscription service whereby for a monthly or annual fee, I would be sent the latest updates, contribs. etc. Is this possible, or maybe even actually taking place as I speak but not generally known? Having to go "Cold Turkey" from my ability to actively and rapidly interract with Mandrake releases is something I can deal with if necessary, but am hoping there are methods available to "compensate for the loss" Basically I guess the issue is, "how can I downgrade yet continue to upgrade?" He plans to make it modular for next version, so a 'fortunes-offending' package can be put available somewhere for people who want it for example. The reason why it is not available on the *compiled* version on our CDs is a long history; but anyway they are on the sources; you can get the src.rpm comment out the line %patch0 of the spec file, then rebuild it. > > ~Andreas -- Ki ça vos våye bén, Pablo Saratxaga http://www.ping.be/~pin19314/ PGP Key available, key ID: 0x8F0E4975

Makes a fine rescue disk, although it boots *slow*. ZipSlack can be downloaded from Slackware's site, it's about 36 MB.

Re: [Cooker] Rescue ISO?
... i sort of like this idea. you know when floppy became a standard for backup media? well, i think the cdrom is well established as well and could be done the same way! most are bootable as well. i'm sure anyone that can boot the mandrake 7.0 cdrom would be able to use this. By the way, win98 rescue disk is essentially "read-only"! If you have the notch in the write protect position! So essentially, you have a nice idea, of which, i think is long over due but hindered because some people didn't have a bootable cd-rom about a year or 2 ago. I have an ls120 drive, of which, doesn't have full kernel support yet for a rescue disk makingmi know i should have one as well. buying another 3 1/2 disk drive takes another irq, so is'nt the solution to my problem. (guess i hafta kernel patch it sometime). But this would solve the problem of disk space. example: could burn your own cd-r of all the modules needed by your system and including system configuration settings for network etc of course the latter maybe stretching it allittle because most would start "browsing" with netscapelol. But having the basic essentials as the win98 rescue disk does is possible from what i see and probabley has already been done! just not published!! To do it "right" you would want at least /etc/ mounted on a ramdisk. -- [ Below is a random fortune, which is unrelated to the above message. ] If anything can go wrong, it will.
RE: [Cooker] Rescue ISO?
hi, if your system is too broken to even use sash (linux 1 at the lilo boot prompt.) why don't you check out tomsrtbt... it uses kernel 2.0 + libc5 i think, but i hear that if you want to use glibc you can, provided that yo have glibc placed somewhere on the hasrd drive, and you can use chroot. a lot of the commands in toms are actually clevwerly written shell scripts. vim and emacs?!! they wouldn't fit on one floppy...btw, tomsrtbt does have vi. geoffrey lee (snail talk) [EMAIL PROTECTED] > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of David Hedbor > Sent: Friday, February 25, 2000 4:36 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [Cooker] Rescue ISO? > > > > Since I stopped using Slackware oh so many years ago, I haven't used > one distribution with a good rescue disk using standard tools. [Cooker] Rescue ISO?
Since I stopped using Slackware oh so many years ago, I haven't used one distribution with a good rescue disk using standard tools. I have never checked out the Mandrake rescue disk either - mostly due to the requirement of actually using a floppy. What about providing a second iso-image that is a bootable system, for rescue work. It could include all kinds of useful tools and not just some weird special environment like the Redhat rescue (again, haven't tried Mandrake's but Redhat's has always been completely useless). Basically, put the best system recovery tools and also stuff like your "favorite" editor like vim and emacs on a decently sized, bootable ISO image. Not only would it incredibly useful - I think it would be a great to use when trying to convince people in upgrading to Mandrake. What do you think? -- [ Below is a random fortune, which is unrelated to the above message. ] Hey, what do you expect from a culture that *drives* on *parkways* and *parks* on *driveways*? -- Gallagher
