Re: [Cooker] BASIC

2003-01-13 Thread roger
I just looked over xbasic for the past hour or twoor should we say
"reminiscing"?

xbasic looks like very clean source code. it also looks as if they're
using checkinstall to create the binary rpms and it wouldn't take too
much effort to create a specfile due to the simplicity of the build.

The only thing i really didn't like about xb is the user interface...it
felt like win3.1. Should be redone in gtk :-)

...and just looked over gb, it didn't look to have as nice of a UI as xb
does, but i think gb will exceed xb in the future

...just jotting down some thoughts.

Why not just learn Bash Shell scripting? It is very very similar to
basic.

odd. well with > 1GB of Ram systems, I thought swap wasn't really
needed.

matter of fact, my system rarely touches swap with 1GB of ram...if it
even has! Yea, don't think i've ever used swap on a 1GB ram system.

Basically, I try to avoid using swap at all costs. I even hate how the
kernel uses up the remaining about of ram on this laptop that has 512MB
ram and uses it as cache. Having to end up using swap on a laptop is
somewhat power consuming!

[Cooker] Fonts in mdk91beta

bah. they're not formatted/compiled properly. getting spaces inbetween
all of the characters. think 2/3rd's of the fonts listed available have
this problem.

any font guru will probabely understand what i'm talking about.

meantime, i'm going to try to sign up for another bugzilla
accoount...looks functional finally.

[Cooker] Install Report of mdk91beta

2003-01-11 Thread roger
(I would have posted this to bugzilla but i've had problems with logging
into a user account to post this stuff too. Anyhow, it is cooker
related.)

Install Problems:
The install is looking more polished then mdk90.

1) [When booting with the rescue cdrom] That @#$@#$ terminal beep on the
rescue boot of the mdk91 cdrom is turned on!

2) [At the end of the install] X11 settings are set to "custom"
(default) when modifying them. (The applet doesn't remember the
settings made, but the config file appears to be written to with the
modified settings).

3) [Near the end of the of the install] The "ok" or "done" button when
configuring which services to start on boot is hidden or placed off the
display screen. I had to use the keyboard keys (tab/cursors) to get to
the next screen (especially since the links/buttons on the far left menu
were inoperable).

4) [Networking config] It found my orinoco gold wireless pcmcia card
;-) and configured it (without locking the system!). however, i also
have a eepro100 on an actiontek minipci card which it failed to properly
configure (maybe i screwed up here..dunno). So i used netconf to fix
things. One scenario I didn't like is that the install configured my
wireless as eth0 and my nic as eth1. Probabely should have configured
the wireless as eth1 and the nic as eth0 as the wireless is a removable
pcmcia cardbut come to think of it, there are now minipci cards with
wireless nics.

Package Related Problems:
4) Evolution appears to be a little buggy (crashed once on Summary
setup...appears to be an app specific problem. Probabely needs an
additional patch/upgrade to make it more stable.). I was also screwing
around in mdk90 with rebuilding and installing evolution (including all
it's depends ie libbonobo, ...) and on starting evolution-1.2.1-1mdk, it
wiped out all of my evolution-1.0.8-3mdk mail server settings
(filters/virtual settings were ok though). So I regressed to
evolution-1.0.8-3mdk. Somebody may want to verify this! Some of the
other evolution settings were also wiped-out...but some were migrated
with the upgrade.

5) when "rpm --rebuild gnome-terminal" missing libncurses-devel dep

6) Gnome Desktop appears to have a delay when doing/executing anything
in it. (ie gaining keyboard/mouse focus of gnome-terminal and typing in
the terminal)

7) Click & Play users may grumble a bit about not having an xconfig
tool to manage their /etc/sysconfig/desktop file

My big grumble:

Bah! The kernel wants to use up all of my ram for cache! This is
really a problem with "rpm --rebuild" (looks like when tar -jxvf files
is being processed during specfile execution, ram is not being
re-claimed from cache). Bah! and the cache performance isn't so hot.
I would rather have nocache since it only saves me 30% startup time on
mozilla and I only startup mozilla once on bootup and i rarely reboot
(like 1-3 days on my laptop). I've already researched some options such
as adding to lilo.conf append "nocache" but appears to have no effect.
And I can't find anywhere in /proc to modify the cache settings (think
in kernel-2.2 there were /proc files that could be modded, now it's all
within .c/.h files?). Eh, I have 512MB of ram. On initial startup and
with X11, I end up with ~80MB used. after an "rpm --rebuild", I end up
with ~11MB free and ~380MB cached! I do see some reclaiming of the
cache file after awhile...dunno.

Other minor notes:

1) kernel has no xfs fs support. looked at the changelog and says "*
xfs integrated upstream."? So much for accessing my external hdd via
ieee1394 as it is an xfs fs.

2) i'm seeing stuff in the kernel changelog and messages about
swsuspend, however, I can't find anything with "man apm" (supposedly a
patch for apm)etc, or howto implement it. This might be a good
reason to use ext3 fs on my laptop now. mmm..forgot to grep the
kernel-source Documentation for swsuspend. (noticed kernel is
acpi...etc)

Re: [Cooker] [Bug 780] [Installation] New: Bringing up networkfails and system freezes during first reboot after installation 9.1 beta1

2003-01-11 Thread roger
what i think is happening, is the network is trying to start the eth1
device (had the same problem). since eth1 isn't configured properly are
is not accessable (ie wrong password), there is no time-out and will
just hang the system.

in brief, there should be a time-out value set (ie for 15-30 seconds)
and then it should be marked as "[FAILED]" if the time-out is
reached/exceeded.

(also, tried the "i" interactive boot...seems to not catch the "i" key
or something. so i just rm the service from /etc/rc.5/S10network...etc)

[Cooker] Install Mandrake from an external ieee1394 cdrom?

2003-01-11 Thread roger
Anybody know if one can yet install mandrake from an external ieee1394
(firewire) cdrom?

I do see a /mnt/cdrom1/images/usb.img and I think I have used it with
my cdrom in a USB 2.0 external case (and the image does contain the
usb-uhci module -- usb20 module).

However, ieee1394 appears more stable and much faster using less cpu
power (for obvious reasons).

I believe the modules that would need to be included for an image would
be ieee1394.o and ohci1394 (sbp2.o would also be a good module to
include as it is for hard drive access (via ieee1394/firewire)).

I did spend sometime trying to create my own ieee1394.img, however,
failed and forget the problem that I was having. I believe it was
something like I was able to package the image file with the
ieee1394.o/ohci1394.o/sbp2.o modules but for some reason, the diskette
wouldn't recognize the device. I do believe i was also ending up
modprobing the modules manually.

...anyways...just a thought.

[Cooker] Enlightenment-1.7 packaging

2003-01-10 Thread roger
Willing to volunteer to start packing this desktop into SRPM.

The only problem is trying to get a cvs snapshot to build without
errors. ~2 mos ago, evas was being a real pain in the arse when trying
to get apps that depend on it to build properly. Traced everything back
to evas from what I recall.

Since then I have been monitoring the cvs commits (for the past 2 mos)
and looks like patches are being applied every other day.

I may start to try to build this again. The only problem is trying to
aquire a *good* cvs snapshot that actually builds without problems!!!
(this means, getting all the evolution-1.7 libs and extra applications
to build without problems).

Yea. ditto to what somebody else stated on the voting system,
Evolution-1.7 *looks* really nice and impliments some really new ideas.
(On a side note, the only reason i use evolution-1.6.x is because it's
the only desktop that has a good "mouse navigation" between virtual
desktops..other then this, i usually rely on console, .xsession/.xinit,
and hotkeys to start apps.)

[Cooker] gaim-0.59-2mdk.src.rpm uploaded to incoming/

2002-07-15 Thread Roger

I grabbed todays cvs version and rebuilt.
I have yet to fully test it but i can now send messages without it
crashing. ah, and i've traced it to a definite plugin conflict.
unloading pluggins resolves the crash also.

take it our trash it. (hey, it's CVS! IT's Gotta Be Better!)

2002-07-15 Thread Roger

nah. i just loaded all the plugins i had prior and sending a icq message
now works without crashing.

somethings up with the last released version. it appears fixed now.

keep in mind, that i tried rebuilding the cooker gaim on 2 seperate
boxes and did allot of experimenting and still got the same crash and
now the cvs version works fine.

thanx for the tip on gdb symbols...i'm going to track down the bug i
filed with the gaim bug system and advise them it's been apperantly
fixed in cvs.

i just grabbed the latest gaim cvs and it appears to work now.

one thing that i *failed* to try was to check for *conflicting plugins*!
(doh!)

i had almost all the plugins loaded. and one obvious thing could be the
fact that i was signed on both aim & licq at the same time(?)

if you can't wait for a response, you'll find the answer in the "Trouble
Shooting Section" of the pcmcia/cardbus howto.

you probabely either need to specify the i/o port to use for the slot#1
or disable a probing feature.

i believe these features need to be specified within one of the files
within the /etc/pcmcia folders.

just an additional fyi.

it appears that the -4mdk/-5mdk build performs much (or noticabely)

it looks like the "envelopes" module appears to be formating the

oh hum bug. and i recently cleaned out my email with the email that the

however, i do not believe that this is the same problem i saw with -3mdk
(i built 3mdk but i think it was a diff error).

ah, now i remember, -3mdk errored on a "setup" script after the X
connection error. as such, the solution was to run setup manually and
then rm the "X connection" & some setup lines within the spec and then
rerun with rpm --short-circuit.

mmm...well. i would imagine that this has been addressed then and will
primarily focus on the upcoming 1.1 release

nah. after researching the issue for a week or two, it would appear that
i'll sit that one out. i've got too much stuff on my schedule as it is.

yup. did some module research here. i think it has to do with the
ide-floppy driver being counted, but cannot be removed due to the
ide-floppy being compiled into the kernel. ide-cs.c is probabely
lacking something here.

 Sadly, I

ditto.

nah. i manually mounted the /dev/hdc1 /mnt/disk. ide-floppy, nor any
other related modules to the pcmcia bus are mounted. i believe that
your first guess what right on the money.

i'll have another look over ide-cs.c to see what's up.

oh, this brings back memories with the ehci-hcd.o module as well.
similar scenario that it was being unloaded automatically via the pcmcia
script but it *could be* manually. turned-out, that the ehci-hcd code is
correct but it resorted to a *known bug* in pcmcia/cardbus code.

eh, just purely guessing, but this may all fall back to the
pcmcia/cardbus developement.

ok. close thread. i'm started to ramble and speculate again ;-)

nope.

top of lsmod:
ide-cs 3296 1
ds 6048 0 [ide-cs]

# rmmod ds
ds: Device or resource busy

# rmmod ide-cs

Checking the /var/log/messages, i'm seeing that ide-floppy is called
*after* ide-cs is loaded. But, this ide-floppy driver is compiled into
the kernel. As such, i cannot rmmod the ide-floppy.

[Cooker] cannot remove the ide-cs module

2002-07-07 Thread Roger

I cannot unload ide-cs with rmmod. I've already umounted the hdc1 driver
that was mounted on /mnt/disk. even stopping pcmcia services fails with
the same error.

Any ideas? (ide-cs is an ide driver for the pcmcia/cardbus port)

i believe this is the "bootsplash*.rpm"

rpm -qa bootslash

if you see it turn up, then do:

rpm -e bootsplash

this will remove the bootsplash from the system.

Granite. it's a good rpm for the corporate enviroment where you want to
keep people from seeing all that stuff and you have hired a sys admin to
maintain it. but for normal users, it blocks allot of stuff that we need
to see.

i'll give them around 2 weeks to go from RC1 to final release (they

so, according to this time schedule, 6-12 mos. at the least. kinda slow.

so.. does the jpackage contain a java jre/jdk workable on gcc-3.1?

[Cooker] Evolution crashes when adding an attachment

2002-06-22 Thread Roger

evolution-1.0.7-1mdk on a pentium ~1GB crashes when adding an
attachment. After creating a new email and right after clicking on the
"Attachment" (paperclip icon) the mail component declares that it has
unexpectedly quit and needs to be restarted, etc.

I'm wondering if this bug is relative to the cpu type. on this box, it's
a ~1GB pentium. on my other box, it's a smp 750 Pentium with identical
evolution builds, except evolution-mail component does not quit when
adding an attachment on that 750 Pentium box.

BUT! when i run evolution-mail inside gdb, i can add an attachment
succesfully! odd.

Here's the process that i use that allows attachments to be added
successfully without the evolution mail component quitting:

You'll need to have 2 xterms open, in the first xterm:

bash$ export CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG=1
bash$ killev; gdb evolution-mail

Then start the process:

(gdb) r

Now, wait a good 5 seconds so that evolution-mail can successfully start
up and then in the second xterm:

bash$ evolution

fyi: the site does require a JDC uid/pass but it's fairly simple to do
so without needing to wait for a password/verification via email.

just pop in a brief name/password and click ok.

i already see about 5 posts as of this time.

I usually see something from Sun within 30 days support wise, but that's
after the issue has been bounced from within the corp lan several times.

i'm seeing something similar on this box. on my other box, i have no
problems.

both boxes have similar, if not, exactly the same packages installed.

think i found the problem to be a filesystem error on this box where
trying to attach an attachment to an email crashes evolution. i'm
betting the problem lies in one of evolution's deps where a
filesystem/sector liesand i need to re-format the partition...still
need to cp -ax the whole sha'bang to another hdd..but need to get
ieee1394 modules loaded with the rescue cdrom :-(

yup. i have a similar error to your also, however, i have yet to
re-compile the latest & greatest.

yup. i got a snapshot of the cvs just prior to this and have built an

well, i have also upgraded/built the following from cooker:
libgtk+1
gtkhtml
bonobo

liboaf
libgal

however, i recall that i had this problem with evolution-1.0.5-2mdk

also note, i'm rebuilding all from srpm to ensure that all of the deps

[Cooker] Addition/patch to unusual_devs.h

Although i've already emailed-off the required info for this device to
be added to:
/usr/src/linux-2.4.18-18mdk/drivers/usb/storage/unusual_devs.h

I noticed that mandrake has a patch for another Minolta device for this
file at the time I was working on this. As such, it might be nice to
have this added to the particular patch until this device gets submitted
into the main kernel tree.

/usr/src/linux-2.4.18-18mdk/drivers/usb/storage/unusual_devs.h

UNUSUAL_DEV( 0x0686, 0x400b, 0x0001, 0x0001,
"Minolta",
"Dimage 7i",
US_SC_SCSI, US_PR_BULK, NULL,
US_FL_START_STOP ),

I've also added the product to the linux-usb.org site:

[Cooker] ieee1394 & sbp2 module thinks my harddrive is a cdrom?

2002-06-04 Thread Roger

Just rebuilt kernel-2.4.18-18mdk & kernel-smp-2.4.18-18mdk and both my
computers' kernel thinks my firewire harddrive is a /dev/sg0 device
instead of a /dev/sda1 device!

My previous (kernel-2.4.18-16mdk?) did recognize the firewire harddrive
as /dev/sda device (properly) most of the time.

Is this a scripting error (in hotplugging?) or does somebody think i
should try rebuilding the kernel with the sbp2 statically?...any ideas?

yup. i've done all that already. i believe i copy/pasted the script i'm
using if i need to destroy/recreate my /dev/hde1 (or /dev/hda1)
parititon and then re-copy the data back to it.

if you read my post, i'm doing something unique. other then that, the
boot/rescue cdrom works for all other general purposes. it just fails to
re-install the boot loader for the scenario that i'm giving it. no
biggy.

[Cooker] evolution-1.0.5-2mdk bad db3 bz2 source file?

2002-06-03 Thread Roger

just downloaded this package this evening from a mirror.

would appear that the db3*bz2 source is bad (i worked around this by
simpley extracting the db3*bz2 source file from the previous evolution

dunno if this problem is with the mirror or if it originated during
mandrake's uploading of this particular package...or even if it's a
problem generated during my download (however, never had a problem like
this with dialup...just broadband at times).

[Cooker] FYI: Getting mjpegtools built with avifile (divx/lav2divxt) for>=Mandrake 8.2

2002-06-03 Thread Roger

Here's is how i got DIVX working with mjpegtools-1.6 (lav2divx).

You can get mjpegtools here http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/ or just goto
that site to read the amazing "MJPEG Howto". Only 1.6-beta2 is in the
Mandrake /contrib tree.

I pretty much compiled all teh SRPM's (easier to resolve deps). You can
get these from Mandrake's mandrake-devel/contribs/ tree and from
http://plf.zarb.org/rpm/src/

The PLF website is basically a collection of RPM Packages that cannot be
included into the main Mandrake tree due to licensing issues.

Where you see an "*", usually will mean multiple packages and may
involve a different naming scheme (ie: a package foo*.rpm may provide
either libfoo.ix86.rpm or even mimi.ix86.rpm!). So grab the SRPM and
rebuild them to save yourself from any headaches.

I compiled all of the following on a freshly compiled gcc-3.1.

libqt3/libqt3-devel installed
rpm -Uvh /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686/libqt3*

libdv/libdv-compat
rpm -Uvh /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686/libdv1-*

xvid
rpm -Uvh --force /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686/xvid-*
(it conflicted with divx4linux package. use --force. xvid-divx-devel has
/usr/include/divx4.h while divx4linux package doesn't.)

avifile/avifile-plugins
rpm -Uvh /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686/*avifile*0.7.6-0.20020508.1mdk.i686.rpm

win32-codecs
rpm -Uvh /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686/win32-codecs-1.0-1plf.i686.rpm

AVIFILE-PLUGINS (has to hack to include 0.7.6!)

libdvgrab
rpm -Uvh /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686/dvgrab-1.1-0.1b1mdk.i686.rpm

*Notes: Xine, for some reason, will not be able to sync the audio &
video of the divx files. This is highly unusual as Xine usually works
very well for me. I'm now using aviplay to playback divx files. I'm not
sure if Xine's problem is either with the video card I just installed or
if it's a bug in a recent release of Xine (or other).

[Cooker] rebuilding packages with gcc-3.1

2002-06-01 Thread Roger

i rebuilt mozilla & evolution with gcc-3.1.

Although they were successful, i now have the following anomallies:

1) opening mozilla preferences (edit > prefs) shows all the preferences
"unmarked" and marking (checking the boxes as appropriate) only results
in them not being shown when the preferences are closed & reopened (ie
Advanced > Enable Jave or Apperance > Colors, etc)

2) Evolution crashes when the "attachment" button is click on an email.
(when trying to attach a file). I have already tried texstar's
1.0.5-2mdk build and I still get crashes in the same manor.

Obviously, i have a lib dep problem someplace (or something needs a
re-compiling by gcc-3.1). this bug is reproducable on 2 platforms, with
similar package installations.

Re: [Cooker] mdk82 rescue cd fails to reinstall lilo

2002-06-01 Thread Roger

btw. the main reason i think it fails is becuase there are no /dev/*
files. as such, it can't install the bootloader into /dev/hda(1) (or
/dev/hde in my case)

executing the following script without chroot'ing the mounted partition
solves this in my case.

[Cooker] mdk82 rescue cd fails to reinstall lilo

2002-06-01 Thread Roger

Choosing to "reinstall the bootloader" option fails for my purpose. The
following details the scenario i just performed manually. Basically, i
had to backup my entire "/" and then reformatted my install partition
and then copied the entire "/" back to the partititon. I then had to
re-install lilo.

Scenario:

1) have an xfs partition at /dev/hde1 containing all of "/"
2) cp -ax /* /mnt/{alternate backup hdd}

deleted and re-formated /dev/hde1 and reboot using mandrake82 cdrom#1
using the F1 & rescue process.

1) recreated an xfs partition on /dev/hde1
2) mount /dev/hde1 /mnt/disk
3) mount /dev/hdh1 /mnt/disk2 (the hdd that contains the backup of "/")
2) cp -ax /mnt/{alternate backup hdd}/* /mnt/disk2

I then created a small script in /boot that contains the following line:
#!/bin/bash
echo 'image=vmlinuz-smp append="devfs=mount" root=/dev/hde1
initrd=initrd-smp.img' | ../sbin/lilo -C - -b /dev/hde -i ./boot.b -m
./map -s ./boot.b -d60

Re: [Cooker] still problems with make xconfig andkernel-2.4.18-17mdk

2002-05-31 Thread Roger

you need to comment out the following within the spec:

1) the source file of "lirc" (including any other patch/source of lirc.
2) the patch for dxr2 (hollywood thang)

was then able to do a make xconfig (although i usually just edit the
.config manually with 1 or 2 settings.)

..building 2.4.18-18mdk now with gcc-3.1

this is an rpm packaging error on rpm --rebuild. it's looking for the
opengl.so file and it isn't finding it. i'd probabely have to send the
whole build log.

Yup. latest NVidia drivers. i'll bet this is the source of the
problem...however, i do believe that i do have the mesa-devel and other
opengl-devel packages installed.

Actually, i download the NVidia srpm's and rebuild them instead of only
downloading the binary.

correction, after the first time of figuring out to use:
/usr/lib/openoffice/program/spadmin

after using it once, kinda isn't hard at all to remember in the future.
or else, if you change the printer settings within oowriter, after
closing and re-executing oowriter, oowriter will not remember the
printer settings.

Re: [Cooker] kino-0.5-2mdk.src.rpm build error

ok all, here's the news on kino. you need to upgrade to a cvs build of
libdv to provide the new headers (see previously posted build errors).

i've just successfully rebuilt the following with cvs code:
libdv-0.9.5-2mdk.src.rpm and kino-0.5-3mdk.src.rpm

..and it works. mostly but found a bug. To the kino list i go ;-)

just an fyi, dunno if this model is support under sane (but my astra

try either xscanimage or using scanimage manully:

xscanimage umax:/dev/usb/scanner0
scanimage umax:/dev/usb/scanner0

or yours would be something like:
xscanimage mustek:/dev/usb/scanner0

[Cooker] xsane bails out with UMAX2200 USB

2002-05-28 Thread Roger

It would appear that xsane is trying to scan for a scanning device even
after i specify one (xsane umax:/dev/usb/scanner0). I also tried to
create a common ln -s /dev/usb/scanner0 /dev/usbscanner which apppears
to help but xsane then complains:

gdb reports:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x407454c0 in sane_sm3600_init ()
   from /usr/lib/sane/libsane-sm3600.so.1

sane has no problem finding the umax device connected via usb port and
scannerdrake appears to find & configure it also.

I can also use xscan to perform scans, but it's not as good as xsane.

This has been a continous bug for the past ~6 mos or more.
I'm now on gcc-31

Although I should probabely send this to the xsane mailling list, maybe
the xsane packager is on this list.

oh, btw, sane-1.0.8 is out! (yes, i packaged this as well last night,
but my email was down.)

mmm... neat. just tried:
lineakd-0.3-1
lineakconfig-0.1-1

and with a little hacking the text config file, the lineakd does work
here.

using a Logitech wireless Optical Mouse keyboard/mouse.

the dameon complains about some of the "Finance Keys" and 3-4 others as
to why they're not configured (i have them commented out in the config
file to allow the program to run without it faulting).

although, lineakconfig doesn't run at all.

Correction. it is ;-) i even tested cd-rw burn rates to make sure.
Burn rates for a without the ehci-hcd module being loaded was ~8x's.
Burn rates with the ehci-hcd module loaded showed ~25x's

The ehci-hcd will register itself as "not being used by any other
module" and it will work transperantly.

The following file has more info:
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/usb/ehci.txt

In brief, if loaded, it will take over usb packet transmissions, but if
it isn't present or the bus doesn't support the higher transfer rates of
the USB 2.0 spec, transmission then defaults back to the old
usb-ohci/usb-uhci module (the USB 1.x spec)

Ah Ha! my theory worked. the /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia script is checking
& unloading all drivers that are listed to be registered with the
pcmcia_core/ds modules. (i believe the $PCIC variable within
the script is responsable for unloading these modules.)

Since ehci-hcd is not listed (by lsmod) as being registered with pcmcia_core/ds
modules (or even being used for that fact), the pcmcia script simply ignores
the ehci-hcd module. But, in reality, it is being used transperantly as i
mentioned above.

I'm thinking the reason the maintainer of the ehci-hcd choose "not to show the
module as being registered" with any other usb module" as it may have caused
a conflict with being able to fall-back to the older usb-ohci/usb-uhci
driver. Just a complete guess here tho.

Or, it's simply an issue that was over-looked.

well, I've finished recompiling but i don't think i'll need to do that unless
we want to recompile the ehci-hcd module to show itself as being registered and
see what happens form there.

nope. since 1.0.4, seems it went stable and the bug with deleting
multiple emails at once seems fixed.

I didn't catch the full email thread of this so i'll only gander that
this problem is with the prebuilt i586 rpm.

Although, i have also cleaned out my boxes and have performed a totally
clean Mandrake-8.2 install on them.

I also noticed, to build evolution-1.0.5 required
gtkhtml/gal/bonobo-conf upgrades from cooker ftp. i try to build these
packages all from srpm as well. If anybody is curious, only an upgrade
of gtkhtml was required to build evolution-1.4 on a stock mandrake 8.2
install (going from memory here).

i believe we're commenting about teh "suspend to disk" feature. ..ditto,

short answer: yes. on "stop)" it hangs/freezes.

It looks like the "/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia stop" script is trying to
rmmod the pcmcia_core/ds related modules, but it hangs because it hasn't
unloaded the usb-ohci & ehci-hcd modules prior (which are in use by the
pcmcia_core/ds modules).

I quickly circumvented this (hacked the /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia script
to "/sbin/rmmod usb-ohci & /sbin/rmmod ehci-hcd" just before the script
executes the "/sbin/rmmod $PCIC, /sbin/rmmod/ds, /sbin/rmmod
pcmcia_core".

To note (you reminded me of something), the module ehci-hcd is not being
shown as being used by the usb-ohci modules. ...my bet too is that
when the "/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia stop" is executed, it's not realizing
that ehci-hcd.o is being used by the usb-ohci module so it doesn't
unload this, as such, everything hangs. I'll test my theory when i get
my next chance to reboot (later this evening sometime).

I simply added "/sbin/rmmod/usb-ohci & /sbin/rmmod/ehci-hcd" within the
/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia (within the "stop)"section prior to this
script unloading any modules ($PCIC, pcmcia_core & ds).

Although a quick hack, it works and the freezes have completely
stopped...etc.

eh, i hand wrote the above since i couldn't even sync the drives prior

Re: [Cooker] Adaptec USB2connect (aua-1420) - Laptop Cardbus Adapter

2002-05-19 Thread Roger

Ok. after making the modifications as I stated within this thread, I
have also now successfully been able to hot-plug and hot-unplug this
card.

To unplug this card successfully, you need to first unload the usb
modules used by it:

# rmmod usb-ohci
# rmmod ehci-hcd

# cardctl suspend 0
(or # crdctl suspend 1 depending on which socket# you have this card
inserted. use cardctl config to figure out which one.)

Once done, you should be able to unplug the aua-1420 card (Adaptec
USB2connect card).

It would appear that the /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia script should be
unloading the usb-ohci/ehci-hcd modules but isn't. This is what also is
causing the hangs/freezes at shutdown.

I'm pretty sure now if i added a line within the /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia
script on the "stop)" function (and restart), to unload these specific
modules prior to rmmod pcmcia_core/ds/etc, I will successfully prevent
the hangs/freezes on service pcmcia stop/restart.

Re: [Cooker] Adaptec USB2connect (aua-1420) - Laptop Cardbus Adapter

2002-05-18 Thread Roger

ok. did some reading on the pcmcia-howto docs and then just said scr*w
it and proceeded to act on my Theory, "When in doubt, hit all of the
keys."

Did some searching on google and found the following failsafe settings
for the /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia (config file):

PCMCIA=yes
PCIC=yenta_socket
#PCIC_OPTS="irq_list=5,9,10"
#PCIC_OPTS="pci_irq_list=10,10 do_scan=0"
PCIC_OPTS="pci_irq_list=11,11 do_scan=0"
CORE_OPTS="probe_io=0"
CARDMGR_OPTS="-f  "

First, i did a cardctl config to check the irq's used by the sockets
after a successful boot. They appeared to be happily set to irq 11 per
my system, but I tested irq 10 and they also appear happy on that too.

I believe that setting CORE_OPTS="probe io=0" turns-off probing of
input/output.

I've performed several cold boots and I no longer see any boot hangs
after the pcmcia/cardmgr services are started.

So, dunno which option did the trick to avoid bootup hang/freezes with
this card. One of the above four added options did the trick tho.

Although, I still get the following hang on shutdown:

{HIGH TONE BEEP HERE}
usb.c: USB disconnect on device
usb-ohci.c: bogus NDP=255 for OHCI usb - 09:00.1
(the above two statements are repeated ~4x's)

usb-ohci.c: USB HC Takeover failed!
usb.c: USB bus 3 deregistered
usb.c: USB disconnect on device
usb-ohci.c: USB HDC TakeOver failed!
usb.c: USB bus 4 deregistered
hcd.c: remove: 09:00.2, state 3
usb.c: USB disconnect on device

{TOTAL SYSTEM HANG HERE!}
at this point kernel hacking keys no longer works. although, I'm
thinking about making a custom "quick" shutdown script to bypass
turning-off all services since i'm on a stand-alone system. I've just
been using the kernel hacking keys to sync/umount all drives/off or
reboot.

[Cooker] usb-ohci is already loaded on startup

It appears that the startup scripts are also trying to load up the
usb-ohci more then one times. (usb-ohci shows already loaded when doing

this appears, more or less, as apperance bug (non-critical). i have an

Re: [Cooker] Adaptec USB2connect (aua-1420) - Laptop Cardbus Adapter

2002-05-18 Thread Roger

Figured-out that line #149 of "w/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia" as causing the
shutdown hang/freeze. So I commented "#/sbin/rmmod $PCIC" as follows:

if grep -q "ds " /proc/modules ; then
echo -n " modules"
/sbin/rmmod ds
#/sbin/rmmod $PCIC
/sbin/rmmod pcmcia_core
fi
echo "."
rm -f /var/lock/subsys/pcmcia
    EXITCODE=0
