2002-09-05 Thread Hola from Lauber

I've heard something about a problem w/ KDE and floppy drive access. Try
copying files via Bash or something of that sort.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I was also copying a file from
hard drive to floppy with Konqueror. After the crash, it seemed to work
fine using cp in a console...
I think the flashing keyboard lights indicates a kernel crash... can
anybody confirm?

weird. when it fails, can you switch to console 2 are do "fdisk -l"
(or maybe "fdisk -l /dev/hda", replacing hda with whatever is your
drive)

what does it give? what is the id for the WindowsXP partition?

The update to kde-utils also generated the same message.
Like I said though apps seem to run so no sweat there.

I agree it'd be cool, but it's more complicated since the
filelist is not in the hdlist (not talking about synthesis of

following lines to /etc/profile:
export LANG=en_GB
export LANGUAGE=en_GB:en

Do not test X just let let the installation complete.
When system reboots your B3 X86conf-4 will still be intact and used to
start X and it should perform without problem.

Is this maybe not a drakx problem, assuming the drive order will be the
same as during install, but it changes when using hdx=ide-scsi on a

No, no idea, I check code (it could have been created by install automatically
to /mnt/cdrom by the media used to install).

After that, it could be a mix in /etc/fstab (?) as urpmi use /etc/fstab to
reverse mount point found in path so it could be the problem.

What have you do to get /mnt/cdrom2 and /mnt/cdrom (if you changed by hand) else
it could be a problem in install.

François.

The tinyfirewall was, at least until recently, a simplied graphical
frontend to Bastille (a shell script). We have been used this script also
for our MandrakeSecurity product. Bastille is very limited (it doesn't
support DMZ and the developpement team is really not an active one) so we
have chosen something much more powerful : Shorewall (shorewall.net),
which is also a series of shell scripts.

In order to have something similar to the previous configurations, we have
adpated tinyfirewall and drakgw to Shorewall. This is only the begining
... A more complex tool will be added in the future.

No, it won't work..
Syntax for /etc/sysconfig/desktop is :
DESKTOP=name_of_your_desktop (either GNOME, KDE, ICEWM, ...)
DISPLAYMANAGER=name_of_your_display_manager (either KDM, GDM, XDM)

try logging into a console and typing "update-menus" without the quotes
of course, then restart KDE. I had a similar problem using the new
rpmdrake on the first 9.0 beta. I installed some software, and lo and
behold, practically my whole kicker menu disappeared! Anyway the
command update-menus worked. I'd suggest staying away from menudrake
though. I've always had bad luck with it.

Re: [Cooker] Beta 4 install: dm

Is OK that it starts early - is the killing of X later that is the problem.
Most of the tasks that start after dm are not related to things that most
users are going to use in the first minute or so the computer is up, and
dm lets the user get to a desktop a lot quicker.

Re: [Cooker] Beta 4 : Sblive

2002-08-25 Thread Vincent Boulet

OH !!! Now it works

I rebooted (yes I know, linux != reboot :) ), before
KDE start I run draksound in text console. It let me
choose between Audigy et emu10k1. I choose the second
one. Alsa have been restarted and now everything works
! It's like mandrake 8.2 (i.e no bass and tremble
control, and kmix detect "Creative SBlive - emu10k1
instead of "mixer01").

Thank you !

Because there are things still happening that I want to see the progress
of on terminal 1 - I'm watching the progress of shorewall, postfix and
ADSL loading when I'm interrupted by that black screen and wait cursor.

I can hit [Ctrl+Alt+F1] to get back but there's a delay.

Those are things you can customize. Not everybody will like it the way
you like it.

Move local to 98 and put the dm to 99 and put a ``sleep 5'' as the last
statement in /etc/rc.local

Could you try the program alsamixergui and make 100% sure that not hearing your
speakers is not
due to having the volume turned down or the channel muted?

If not, it seems we finally found someone who has non working front speakers.
I'll probably have to repent now, since it may seem ALSA does contain a bug for some
sblive cards.

Vincent: if you cannot get it working, switch to OSS with harddrake and try again.
O, and your english isn't so bad:)

Check your modules.conf, I think the card is setup to use alsa by default. Those tools
are
probably not compatible with alsa. You can switch to OSS using cookers'latest

Well, you do get the benefit of being able to quit X without changing the

Been there, dealt with that. It's a locales issue, and at a level lower
than KDE. If you log in to the command line, you'll see the same
behavior.

If you unset the LC_* and LANG variables, then the sorting will be the
"traditional" way. My guess is that it is done this way to be nicer to
people moving from Windows, where W and w are considered equivalent.

Initially (in the cooker time-frame before 8.0), I just zeroed out the
/etc/sysconfig/i18n file. However, I seem to remember that messed with
my font sizes in Gnome apps I ran. So, I made changes to /etc/profile
to not run /etc/profile.d/*lang.sh, and then went into /etc/X11 and
commented out lines in Xsession and prefdm that sourced in the
/etc/profile.d/*lang.sh file. Logged in again, and all was well.

It's been a while so I may not remember everything I did, but now my
sorting is "traditional".

Of course, this is English specific.

As well, I am having problems with this. With the old tinyfirewall (<=8.2), I
was able to accept all the default refusals to provide access and the Probe My
Ports test at Steve Gibson's site* would report all 'Stealth' (no evidence of a
computer). Now, the default (post-install) is 'no firewall' and the probe
reports only 'Closed'. If I deselect 'no firewall' and select all the other
services (which seems to parallel the provision in old tinyfirewall to allow my
box to act as various types of server, which I don't want), I get 'connection
refused' when trying to surf. During install-time configuration, I believe CUPS
and mail server were preselected, which implied provision of servers that I
don't have, which I deselected, which led to my reported issue with surf
stoppage @ name resolution failure. Seems to me the old behavior filled a niche
for many like myself, who, while not necessarily adverse to learning new skills,
do not presently feel a need to have more added to the need_to_do list ;)

I have a _really_ bad feeling about this for new users. As there is very

You can use the device ids to load the right driver (as it does already), but
it would take some hacking on diskdrake to get it to figure out what device
(/dev/sd(a|b|c)n) belongs to what driver and what it actually is. I'm not
even sure how to do that, and it will most definitely lead to bugs. Also, it
would seem like /mnt/mass_storage is _far_ more confusing than /mnt/windows.

What i think should happen is
1 only the first vfat fixed disk should be setup as "Windows"
2 in the "expert" options you should have a set of buttons to remove
Removeable/UnSafe/Previos entries to get rid of
floppy (why wouldn't the floppy have booted past this menu??)
other removeable (same reason and its safer)
and entries from the old menu (also may be invalid)

and it would be nice if there was a %installed language% list of what
drives were recognized and where they got mounted (if they did)

To be honest, I don't recallit wasn't visually obvious at the

auto-install floppy to indicate that such action would be required.
It seems that the folks most likely to use auto-install would be the
typical gotta-be-in-fifty-places-at-once sysadmins; new initiates to
Mandrake's auto-install system might well come away with a
less-than-uplifting OOB experience.  As somebody earlier on the list
noted, we aren't competing against sal-si-puedes Windows 95 anymore; we
need to assume that the person doing this install may be reasonably
intelligent/experienced with PCs in general but is not a member of any
particular priesthood, and s/he may well be sceptical-to-hostile towards
  the whole idea anyway.

Can you tell us the name of the OSS driver (is it `es1370'?) and
send the output of "lspcidrake -v" please?

This is getting a bit better than the Dark Side 8.0 days,
  BUT

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure that everything that's visible in the
list-view package selection screen is available in the tree view...even if
you have to add another 'Other' or 'Uncommon'subtree of some sort.  I
was amazed at how many tools, utilities, games, and so on are in the list
view but not the tree - where it's much easier to select and unselect
categories quickly.  This should be a basic check that QA does for
  *every* shipped beta-or-better build.

Some minor points about Beta-4...There's no easy
way to install everything. Going downthe list of package groupings to
install I find when adding some, other packages get removed from the
selection. I have to go back and re-select them, thenit works.
In particular 'console' causes a number ofother options to become
de-selected. 2.6 GB or soreally isn't that much space space these
days. Thereshould be an 'install everything' option. At the
license agreement, hitting rebootsthe machine, which is
a little annoying. Presumablythe default key rejects the agreement but
this is not obvious because you can't see which of the buttons
isthe default. it would be nice for first-time usersif the dlg
just stayed there until the user either hit the 'OK' button or the
reset switch, or clicked on the 'no' button. On network
configuration, after auto-detection youare told which card has been
detected and asked if youhave 'another one'. Unfortunately this is
ambiguous because you could mean"Do you have a different
one"-or-"Do you have an additional (or 2nd) one".It's only
clear which of these you mean in thefollowingdialog. I would
suggest changing the text to "Do you have a different one?". (ahh the
joys of the Englishlanguage :-)).The boot-up sequence
indicates that swap is being 'started', but I don't have any swap!
Perhaps the message should change if there's been no swap
partition created. In the lilo installation options there is an
editbox that allows you to enter the (real) amount of RAM on your
system. I was fearful of using thisfacility because I had no idea what
the units were.Perhaps this could be made clear in the dialog
text. The wrong order of magnitude -either way- wouldhave pretty
dire consequences on the next reboot.thanks for
  listening-S.__Do

The 2.4.18 kernel was the one that was extremely unstable. I can try
downgrading to an earlier mdk kernel if you think that might help. I've
reverted to 8.1 for the time being. Here is what lspcidrake from 8.1 gives me:

The first two unknowns are probably my ATA133 controller its the Promise

in 8.2 and my machine works fine under 8.1, I'm willing to bet that this is
the problem. Is there anything else I can give you that might narrow it
down? I'll work on getting 8.2 installed again tomorrow morning to hopefully
gain a little more information. -- Dave

Well, it must be a pb linked with one of your hardware, could you
try to install a 2.4 kernel afterwards and boot with it.

Could you also include a lspcidrake, and maybe guess which hardware could be
unstable.

Maybe some of you memory get corrupted, haven't you add something that you
had not before (memory, scsi, ...)

To answer your questions:
1. No, it seems to fail on a random package.
2. No, my system is not overclocked.
3. Yes, the install works flawlessly with a 2.2 kernel. However, when I

mmm, a tough one...

1. Does it crash on the same package (for that set the details mode and see or
boot with rescue and read the /root/drakx/ddebug.log)

2. Is your machine overclocked ?

3. Do you experienced the same behavior with a 2.2 kernel (boot with the second
CD, use alternate 2.2 kernel, or make a bootdisk with alternatives images in
/images/alternatives)

4. Can you do a hd install (copying the CD on a partition and using second CD or
hd boot images to start the install from it)

Re: [Cooker] Beta 4 - Xfree 4.2.0 - Trident CYBER9397

2002-03-05 Thread Vincent Meyer, MD

Hi, this is a known bug. I have the same problem on a Gateway Solo 9100
with the same chip. Is being worked on by the XFree folks. There is
a workaround.. the driver from XFree 4.1.0 for trident (trident_drv.o) works
pretty well, and is stable, with XFree 4.2.0 (been using it for weeks)

There are a few minor problems,Xv WILL lock up the machine with this
driver, but other than that, works great.

Would be nice if this driver were available in the CD's (maybe as
trident_410.o ?) to install in these situations.
