So maybe we could have a simple admin html page in there soon if some artistic person is up to it? Why don't we put the admin page in /addon-modules, with the rest of the documentation? Well..., no. Here's what I had in mind, a sort of framework. A bash/c/c++/perl/php coder makes a package that installs all admin like php/perl packages in a unique location for each node. This is possible now since I fixed it so one could install for example phpMyAdmin like this: rpm -Uvh --relocate /var/www/html/admin=/var/www/html/_new_unique_url_ \ phpMyAdmin-2.3.0-2mdk.noarch.rpm The _new_unique_url_ could be generated by random. The admin installer needs to keep track of this _new_unique_url_ and update the start page in that location to include installed admin like packages. The main admin page should maybe look and feel like the start page for MNF?. The admin installer should make a link on the desktop and/or in the menues. etc., etc. Secondary the admin installer should/would: * don't log requests to this url. * be as stealthy as possible. * etc., etc. What is this all good for, what is the point? This method will prevent hammering with htpasswd like password crackers against known locations. Well..., this is what I had in mind when I started one year ago with nisca :) I like these web based gadgets :) Chears. -- Regards // Oden Eriksson Deserve-IT Networks - http://d-srv.com

If you think they should be updated, either mail Deno to get Mandrake Club account, or put them somewhere I can get to them, otherwise I will have to see if I can keep an 8.2 box around long enough to compile on. (i was pretty just-woke-up when i wrote this, i should at least have my morning coffey before i speak;)) IMHO, someone should make a perl GUI for this, where you can browse the CVS, and choose to build an RPM from it. It would of course require: 1)*ALL* patches be in CVS. I have tried building kernel RPMS from CVS, but some of the patches in CVS don't match the patches in the SRPM. 2)All sources be 'find-able'. For example, some of the mozilla sources (i18n stuff) is hard to find. But, in the case where the source URL is not complete, it would be feasible to lookup the package on Freshmeat (they have an xml-ized service available, where one can get the source location: http://freshmeat.net/projects-xml/samba/samba.xml (but this record is old, 2.0.10!). I have a script that does the real basics of this, just bzip2'ing all the patches, copying them to your `rpm --eval %_sourcedir`, and then running rpm -ba. It is also appropriate for building from a cvs snapshot of the original source, but doesn't help in locating old source (unless I can hack it to get an older release from the source cvs). I still need to fix it so it will check the package out of CVS, but it would probably be better to rewrite it in perl, with a GUI. There is a slightly different and slightly improved version of the script in samba cvs (under package/Mandrake). IMHO, something like this would totally waste the Gentoo crowd (who keep saying how good it is to build from source). Oh, shit! I see the problem. Hmm..., what is the point of using CVS in this case then when you cannot use it fully? Is it only for viewing spec file diffs or what? -- Regards // Oden Eriksson Deserve-IT Networks - http://d-srv.com

[Cooker] apache2 status
Hi list. I have successfully rebuilt all modules except for mod_perl for apache2-2.0.42-2mdk. For now you will find usigned updates at http://d-srv.com/Cooker/ It has taken some time to get apache2-2.0.42-2mdk working mainly because I didn't figure out that the libs in srclib/* now uses its own config.layout files until late today... (!!!) It has also taken some time because I fiddled a lot with mod_ldap (which is included from 2.0.41 I belive)..., got it working but chose not to enable it because it would require ldap sasl and pam libs for the httpd2 binary. Everything needed to build mod_ldap is commented out with a # in the spec file. Have a go at this if you like. I did _not_ test functionality I only tried the status handler. There's _lots_ of work to do here... J-M Dault or some other guru needs to figure out how to not link the httpd2 binary against openssl and optionally those ldap libs. I belive 2.0.40 did not link against openssl, only against mod_ssl (and of course ab-ssl)... Another annoyance is that now when I finally figured out why apr and aprutil sometimes produced a lib named -lapr-0 and sometimes without the -0, that damn apu-config file doesn't honor this... [root@foo root]# apr-config --includes --ldflags --libs --link-ld -I/usr/include/apache -lm -lcrypt -lnsl -ldl -L/usr/lib -lapr-0 [root@foo root]# apu-config --includes --ldflags --libs --link-ld -I/usr/include/apache -L/usr/lib -lgdbm -ldb -lexpat -L/usr/lib -laprutil [root@foo root]# rpm -ql libapr0 /usr/lib/libapr-0.so.0 /usr/lib/libapr-0.so.0.9.2 /usr/lib/libaprutil-0.so.0 /usr/lib/libaprutil-0.so.0.9.2 /usr/share/doc/libapr0-2.0.42 /usr/share/doc/libapr0-2.0.42/CHANGES /usr/share/doc/libapr0-2.0.42/README.dev This is so annoying and frustrating I'm almost giving up on apache2... I cannot understand why the ASF people couldn't make this work as apr and apr-util is so similar... I can't say that I'm thrilled with the idea of adding something like this. You might be right about the $$. But it's new code following a new RFC from what I could understand. New features are allways exiting. I have mailed vandyke to make them clarify the license. You're missing the point. If you look at the RFC, *they* wrote it. This isn't a community RFC that they decided to implement; they wrote the RFC and they're selling the product. It looks very self-serving to me. Not to say it isn't an interesting concept, but I would like to see what the openssh team decides before arbitrarily adding it. Hmm..., you probably right about that. But then..., I haven't seen anything opened up from the commercial ssh folks like the originator, f-secure, etc. Of course, it would be a different story if vandyke wanted to sponsor our adoption of their ideas. Monetarily, of course. =) Yes maybe a good idea, why not ask them?. dns distributed public ssh keys? hell..., then we need a secure dns server too ;) But I wouldn't know since I'm not even allowed to download their products, ha ha ha... ;) Sure, it definitely might be interesting. I'd like to get the thoughts of the openssh team first, tho. I really don't like adding stuff that hasn't been audited by them (since they know the openssh code better than I), especially with openssh being such a core component. If it was licq or something, no big deal. Yes, you're right. Let's wait and see what happens. I searched their mail archives but couldn't find a word about the keyserver feature. It's fine to patch things for fixes, proper language translations, etc. But adding features like this causes other problems... it will bring a lot of bad publicity for MandrakeSoft because of Theo; he's made many threats in the past and he's neurotic enough to follow through. For instance, if we do something Theo really doesn't like, or that Markus doesn't like, any questions regarding openssh that even faintly mention Mandrake somewhere in the equation, will get blasted by the openssh developers, and they'll be referred here with none too kind words. I'd rather avoid that sort of thing. Ahh, I didn't think that far, are they really such a*holes? May I ask what those threats were? Let's call them protective. And the threats were basically bad publicity amongst many other Linux/BSD vendors and communities, big anti-MandrakeSoft sentiments on the openssh website, that sort of thing. I don't recall the particulars, but it was enough for me to remove the offending patches. Hmm..., that sounds just plain childish to me. My godness... The explanation isn't really good. Theo and Co make OpenSSH. They do their very best to make it work on all platforms even though other people give them a hard time because of all different kinds of versions of pam. And as long as everybody uses an unpatched version of OpenSSH they can tell from the bug reports what is going on by looking at their own source code. They want to do that. They feel responsible for the product and they have a name to keep. Now somebody sees a nice looking patch and it is a perfectly written patch. They will get questions about the features in it. For something they never wrote. What if it contains a bug? They get the questions. And not from one or two people. No thousands. What if it contains an exploit... go figure what will happen to them. And they really really didn't even do it. Like the last one, he he... And ssh isn't just another app. If it gets broken into you can severely damage a whole distro. I mean patch a kernel... who cares. That's your problem. You can patch nearly anything but it won't damage the product kernel. But this is not the case for OpenSSH. If you manage to break it you damage the whole concept of OpenSSH, not only on your own distro, no on all platforms. So I can imagine Theo and Co being very much against custom added patches. I'd suggest being very careful with OpenSSH not to apply any custom patches other than things that make the build go right. I'd even suggest honoring his opinion about pam just to make sure OpenSSH is secure and stays that way. Wow! Now you have made me grasp the whole picture. Thank you. In the beginning of this thread I was really thrilled and exited with this new feature..., now I'm not that sure anymore. Also, why be pioneers and guinea pigs for a closed commercial propetary software, even when this part of the code is BSD?. I tend to totally agree with you and Vincent Danen now, skip this patch, forget I ever mentioned it. But do make the OpenSSH authors aware of its existance, if not done allready, they might even like it?.
