[CTRL] Fwd: Prison vs Work
-Caveat Lector- - Original Message - Subject: Prison vs Work Prison vs. Work Just in case you ever got the two mixed up, this should make things a bit more clear... IN PRISON... you spend the majority of your time in an 8X10 cell; AT WORK... you spend the majority of your time in a 6X8 cubicle. IN PRISON... you get three meals a day; AT WORK... you only get a break for one meal and you have to pay for it. IN PRISON... you get time off for good behavior; AT WORK...you get rewarded for good behavior with more work. IN PRISON... the guard locks and unlocks all the doors for you; AT WORK... you must carry around a security card and open all the doors for yourself. IN PRISON... you can watch TV and play games; AT WORK... you get fired for watching TV and playing games. IN PRISON... you get your own toilet; AT WORK... you have to share IN PRISON... they allow your family and friends to visit; AT WORK... you can't even speak to your family. IN PRISON... all expenses are paid by the tax-payers with no work required; AT WORK... you get to pay all the expenses to go to work and then they deduct taxes from your salary to pay for prisoners. IN PRISON... you spend most of your life looking through bars from inside wanting to get out. AT WORK... you spend most of your time wanting to get out and go inside bars. IN PRISON... there are wardens. AT WORK...they are called managers. But cheer up, because IN PRISON... you have to stay all the time. AT WORK...you get to go home sometimes. [CTRL] Charles Manson Tidbit
-Caveat Lector- Thank you June for writing the correct information on this subject. You did a good job I would say in your research. This is what I wanted to get clear but could not. :) Birds Private Mail Welcome - Original Message - From: Ynr Chyldz Wyld [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, December 10, 2000 8:32 AM Subject: Re: [CTRL] Charles Manson Tidbit -Caveat Lector- From: "Johannes Schmidt III" [EMAIL PROTECTED] His story at trial always was that he didn't know about it until afterwards, while the real killers found it convenient to claim that he made them do it. Evidence showed otherwise. Manson drove the killers to the LaBianca mansion, and waited for them outside in the car while they carried out his instructions inside... And the mail he has written to his followers since he has been in prison demonstrates that he is both unrepetant and continues to exert inordinate control over their actions. Remember Squeaky Fromme's attempt on Ford's life? She was acting on instructions Manson sent her...and correspondence between her and Manson since then (she's in prison for life) show that he's still trying to get his followers to commit crimes. Some of the things he has said are really funny compared to what people say about him. I read his autoboigraphy, I think it is called Charles Manson Speaks or something Manson is the consummate con artist, and he's obviously succeeded in conning you... The prosecutor, Vincent Bugliosi, who wrote the best book on the case 'Helter Skelter' (which is a good place to start if you want to read more about it, not just hyperbole), was grandstanding and making grandiose claims to bolster his career. You can't lay it all on Bugliosi...Manson's own followers made the most outrageous claims for Charlie's activities... (And this is true) Because of his infamy, he has spent more time in Prison than others who have committed far worse multiple murders and been paroled after 20 years or so. It isn't because of his infamy, but due as I previously stated to the nature of what he has written to followers (both his old-time "commune" followers and his latter-day fans)...which shows that he is both unrepetant and still instructing his groupies to commit crimes... [CTRL] Charles Manson Tidbit
-Caveat Lector- Well June, All I can go on is the stories, books and pictures I have seen and the movie etc. and newshows. According to what I was led to believe , was that everyone was lying down and dead from drinking the poison. So really, I would like to know then if not everyone committed suicide, what really happened there? I am serious and not being sarcastic because I do want to know. I cannot read and do the research I used to be able to do. So I am only going by the poplar vote regarding Guyana. I do know however it was a CIA ran operation. It was not just this cult and other things did happen there. That I have seen in writing in a conspiracy book I probably stilll have. I have many, many books. I researched and researched about myself until I could not research anymore. Now I have my facts, I have to face the consequences of my illnesses and I work hard for my life. Weak minded people are people who have mental health problems, self-esteem problems, or abused in life etc. There are a lot of people out there that can be mind controlled by the right person because some of them do it well. What about the Guyana Tragedy? That man convinced at least about 900 (don't really know no.) people to commit suicide. Shows how little scholarship you have done on the issue, if you really believe all the people who died at Jonestown committed suicide. And the Heaven's Gate debacle is also open to question...lots of conflicting stories, and a strange link to Jonestown (via "Bo" and "Peep")... -Caveat Lector- In a message dated 12/10/2000 2:20:26 AM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: SAN VICENTE DEL CAGUAN, Colombia (AP) -- Colombian rebels on Saturday refused to resume peace talks, despite the government's move this week to appease the group by extending the time it can stay in its stronghold. The leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, said a freeze in peace talks it declared last month would remain in effect until the government produces a plan to curb violence by rival rightist paramilitaries. "We hope the government will tell all Colombians and the international community what its strategy is to fight the paramilitaries," FARC spokesman Raul Reyes told reporters from this southern town in the zone. One can certainly understand the reasoning here. It's amazing how many people are killed when various governments are holding peace talks. "Peace talks" seem to be a special kind of government slang that can best be interpreted as "stop doing what you're doing while we bring in more US advisors, reload our weapons and send up more troops." -Caveat Lector- In a message dated 12/10/2000 9:10:04 AM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: What we are witnessing now is an assassination without the blood. As in 1963, we are seeing the blatant usurpation of the presidency by the fascist powers that have controlled the country--behind an ever growing, omnipresent media smokescreen--ever since the execution of President Kennedy in Dealey Plaza. This time the murder weapons are not rifles but voter fraud and judicial corruption at the highest level, as demonstrated by the US Supreme Court's announcement yesterday that it, in the person of five judges, will decide (tomorrow) who becomes president, and not the people who voted in Florida on Nov. 7. There is no longer any doubt what the outcome will be. Absolutely true. And it goes back aways. Democrat Kennedy was shot. For reasons not to discuss here, Johnson was allowed to govern. The next Democrat, Jimmy Carter, was not allowed to serve a useful presidency--his presidency was suppressed by concentrated action from the entire Congress. The people elected Bill Clinton twice, but his presidency was also suppressed by the constant harague from the Republicans. Every negative was used over every move he made, and his sex life was paraded in front of the world. A world that knows that people do have sex lives and was not particularly interested and certainly not "outraged." The "Death of Outrage" was a result. The Republicans being so outraged as to get their laureate, Bill Bennett, to write a book. Now they have gone so far as to subvert an election, another form of assassination. Fascism is taking form here even as we discuss our "right to vote." Prudy A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. Re: [CTRL] The Assassination of President Gore
-Caveat Lector- Prudy - I keep thinking of Huey Long who said right before he was assassinated, "when fascism comes it will come in disguise". I think fascism took over the Democrat and Republican Parties and our Presidents elected by the people are now told you get out of line and you are a dead man - cheap Tabloids are controlled by CIA/MAFIAfive major publishing houses taken over by Mafia including World Publishing in 1974. Ever note how first they write a book and then, comes a run for the PresidencyHilliary with her There Is A Village was an early tip off and you see the link now, as Hazlett once wrote over a hundred years ago, of literature and arts and sciences, to the police? Guestapo type figures I saw John Glenn nearly destroyed by a govenor of Ohio, CFR type who told him, what he told my boss too - "you son of a bitch, I will destroy you, I will bury you" - my boss just called this man a "red head" in the press, bu Glenn exposed him and ran for Senate then and won..the Democrat Party did not want Glenn any more than the Unions wanted Jimmy Hoffa around for both were being taken over by CFR/NWO pawns. Rings and rings and things.I always wondred why none of these democrats with whom I had to associate, gave a damn about JFK.. Well, some did not want to get murdered, others did not want to be destroyed and see what has been done to image of FBI for these animals have taken over and are in control now. If Bush and Gore are in same boat - so is Ehud and Netanyahoo and I mean Yahoo..note in Holy land they are gong to have their three Presidents and the shades of Daniel and Ezekial work both sides of the fenceall was timed for peaceful election and Israel is so confused for they know not who will be in charge of USA. So do we have a communist/fascist like Gore on one side and a fascist/nazi on the other side? Why do you think Bush was sent an early message and how do you think a "dump truck" got that close to a Presidential candidate? It was a warning - as when someone got into Glenn's house and stole his medals in 1978 or 79.bats and moles, and believe me they left him a message. I saw 7 Dwarves as the press called them, attempt to destroy John Glenn when he ran for Presidentalll 7 dwarves charged at him alone, to destroy him incuding this sickening and disguisting Gepahardt. Went into seclusion in Tennessee, where he attempted to file patents on ATMs, Barbie and instant oatmeal. Wife Tipper eventually had him committed to a sanitarium. He spent final years ordering nurses at Pleasant Days Ahead to bomb Yugoslavia. Joe Lieberman: Went back to U.S. Senate and continued campaign against Hollywood smut. Resigned after photos surfaced on the Internet depicting him in compromising positions with Dr. Laura. Dick Cheney: Scared children at the 2001 White House Christmas party with his dark portrayal of Santa Claus. Wanted to declare war on Iraq again but nobody would let him. Grabbed his chest and keeled over when his daughter showed up at White House dinner with Ellen DeGeneres. President George W. Re: [CTRL] Charles Manson Tidbit
-Caveat Lector- From: "Johannes Schmidt III" [EMAIL PROTECTED] You're privy to the mail he sends his supporters? All mail to and from prisoners is read by the authorities who censor it before sending it on. If that was the case, why didn't they charge him with conspiracy to shoot the president? Good question. But it definitely is one of the things keeping him IN prison. From what I've read there was little classic 'mind control' practiced by Manson on his followers. Most of them seemed to be semi-independant drifters, Perhaps 'independent' in that they had no steady jobs and had broken from their families, but personality-wise they were all pretty 'dependent' people, needing someone of a strong personality to tell them what to do. And Manson, being the con that he is, recognized a good thing when he saw it, namely the tendency for these dependent personalities to be easily lured into a 'commune' type existence led by a 'guru', a role Manson readily assumed. would-be musicians, dropouts attracted to the women of easy virtue who Manson wisely surrounded himself with etc., who were attracted to his charisma. He didn't lock them in cupboards for days etc. The closest thing (and again it may be something they dreamed up at trial to support their story) was that when they had group sex sessions, he would go around 'directing' who was to do what with who etc. Ask Mike Love (who can hardly be described as a 'would-be musician') about Manson's control, including his control of sex sessions...and how afraid Love was for his life when he decided to make a break from Manson and the group... What is your source on this? Or are you just 'assuming' it must be the case? A couple of documentaries...one most recently on women's penitentiaries that touched on Squeaky Fromme...have discussed the letters to and from Charlie which the prison censors read... [CTRL] Fwd: Mind Control at the International Churches of Christ
http://www.pitch.com/issues/2000-12-07/letters.html Weekly Pitch (Missouri) 12/07/2000 Letters Letters from the week of December 7, 2000 Campus Crusade Thou shalt not think: Many thanks to Deb Hipp for a well-researched, well-written article on the International Churches of Christ ("The Church of the Poison Mind," November 23). An especially large thank-you to those ex-members who courageously shared the stories of their journey to, in, and past the ICC movement. I spent most of my 20s involved with this movement. I was involved with the campus ministry that was attached at that time to a mainstream Church of Christ in Lawrence. Although I can relate to many of the experiences and sentiments shared, I know that my experiences pale compared to those who have been involved in "The Church" in more recent years. As more power and authority was centralized in one congregation and one individual, Kip McKean, so too was more mind and life control exerted over the lives of members under the guise of discipleship. The most frightening thing about the ICC is the subtlety of its control over members. Members experience classic mind-control tactics and lots of what I call "crazymaking." As a result, every individual thought or question is labeled as rebellion. Soon, people don't know how to think for themselves. The process back is a long one, because it's a complete reconstruction of who one is and what one believes. Most people I know who left The Church, especially those who led Bible talks or served in other leadership roles, did not leave because they consciously believed The Church to be wrong. Rather, they left believing they would go to hell. However, they were no longer able to live with the disintegrated psyche and that still-small internal voice saying "No!" As I have written about my experience over the years, I have called it the Huck Finn choice. When Huck decided to free Jim the slave, he knew absolutely that he was sinning against God by doing so. Yet, to continue to be Huck, he had no choice. As he freed Jim, he proclaimed, "All right then, I'll go to hell!" I can still remember the day I stood on a street corner and said those very words, and the strange freedom that resulted. There is life after the ICC, as well as a greater appreciation for the gift of who you are. Laura Howard Lawrence - Kingdom come: I was a member of the International Church of Christ several years ago. Like most new converts, I was really excited about the energy these people exhibited toward the work for Christ. But I, too, started to feel smothered by the demands of the disciples to share all my thoughts, feelings, emotions, and actions with them or else I was "being selfish!" It didn't take me long to realize this was something I did not want to be involved in. I remembered that God is in control of my life, not individuals, and that Christ is the only mediator between God and man. Why did I need to confess my sins and shortcomings to a person? They could not forgive me. If that were the case, then Christ's death would be in vain! To those out there who have been approached by these people, be very careful. Make sure this is what you want to involve yourself in. In the end, you will answer to God for your efforts and your life, not them. Also, by giving your life to him and asking him to forgive you, you have already entered into the kingdom ... no church membership needed! Brenda Johnson Kansas City, Missouri Liberation theology: Thank you for an accurate portrayal of the mind games that the ICC plays and how it targets college students. I agreed to do the interview not because I still hurt over the ICC but in the hopes of helping at least one person avoid the mind games that I went through. I would like to add that anyone is vulnerable to the ICC's spiel if approached at the right time in their life: a transitional time, when they feel lonely, nervous, in a new town, on their own for the first time -- in short, a lot of freshmen. Although you wouldn't guess it from the pictures of me, I am generally a very outgoing and cheerful person. Life goes on and, unfortunately, so does the ICC in its quest to "save" the world. I would recommend that anyone looking for additional factual information about the ICC visit www.reveal.org for information or contacts in your area if you have a loved one or are yourself involved in the ICC. What you find there could save you a lot of heartache. Kim Krecek Lawrence

Now with Intifada II all that has taken place since Madrid and Oslo is coming into much clearer focus, rotting in front of our eyes, the stink becoming evident even to those who have supported it and given it sustenance. The following editorial is from Israel's leading newspaper, Ha'aretz, and the following Op Ed appeared in the New York Daily News. The Israelis, it seems, are already adjusting to the failure of Oslo at the political as well as conceptual level, and to the likelihood of a new Likud government. The Americans usually follow the Israeli lead, even if very carefully by just publishing a column from someone who works for a Muslim organization. AYALON'S DIAGNOSIS "Is the option of a Jewish democracy with apartheid acceptable? In my opinion, no," Ha'aretz Editorial - December 7, 2000: The remarks of the former Shin Bet security service director, Ami Ayalon, at a seminar organized by the budget department, should be taken with some seriousness and concern. The seriousness is appropriate because Ayalon until recently was responsible for the most important security policy in the state - thwarting terrorism. Ayalon also has security experience from his years in the IDF, but he made it clear the security of the State of Israel cannot rely only on defense force operations. It must be based on a comprehensive political, economic and social world view that is willing to co-opt the enemy as a partner. This partnership is not one-sided, Ayalon said. He said the Palestinians chose the Oslo track because they had adopted the assumption that only through negotiations, and not by violence, would they be able to get a state. "They hoped for a viable state with a certain element of justice in it." However, this hope did not materialize. "The honorable compromise," as he put it, which the Palestinians were seeking, has run up against the tough conditions of the Israelis, who were seeking only security. This they saw as an independent entity and failed to understand the connection between it and the surrounding circumstances vital to achieve it. As a consequence, the security obsession created intolerable living conditions for the Palestinians. The human suffering of just traveling to work from the autonomous areas, and Israel's stranglehold on the border crossings has, according to Ayalon, created the despair that has been growing from the time the Oslo accords were signed until now, when it has erupted. This is the same security outlook whose failure to realize its aims led almost naturally to the idea of separation from the Palestinians. Ayalon warns that economic and physical separation may harm Israel no less than the Palestinians. If a partnership cannot exist unilaterally, neither can it be unilaterally abandoned. The result, said Ayalon, is the belief that emerged on the Palestinian side that only by "holding a gun to our heads" will they be able to achieve their national aspirations. Prisoner releases, the Hebron Agreement, returns to the negotiating table, happened again and again at various stages only because of pressure exerted on the street by the Palestinians, or because of international pressure dictated by the events. The worrisome part of Ayalon's remarks is in its recognition that the government never absorbed the need for the vital integration there must be between security and partnership in other areas. This is proved by the idea of separation. "Is the option of a Jewish democracy with apartheid acceptable? In my opinion, no," Ayalon said. Even if the suggestion of apartheid goes beyond the actual reality, it is sufficient to say that occupation and democracy cannot coexist. This is the world view that must guide policy makers if they are serious about completing the peace process and transforming it into a lasting peace. This is the type of world view that remains absent from the political dialogue. Instead, its tends to focus on technical, military or economic measures. Re: [CTRL] Drinking Like A Revolutionary
-Caveat Lector- On Sat, 9 Dec 2000 14:48:35 -0800 radman [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: -Caveat Lector- Posted 11/28/00 Drinking Like A Revolutionary by Matthew Robinson The History Channel has launched a special on the Founding Fathers. Their advertisements aren't exactly promising. But the series was very good. Ben Franklin is presented as a "skirt-chaser." James Madison a "nerd" like Bill Gates. John Adams is billed as a candidate for "Prozac." True, the Founding Fathers weren't demigods devoid of human foibles. But most American liberals attack the founders out of a sense of superiority, searching for ways to vanquish heroes. I don't think that putting a human face on our founding fathers (or anyone else for that matter) is an attack. Far from it. Showing that the founding fathers (and mothers) were human, with all the strengths and weaknesses we have, is a good way to help us identify with them. Hindsight is always 20/20, with those who guess right, make the right moves at the right time, and make what turn out to be important decisions elevated to the ranks of demigods, while those who do not are relegated to being examples of what not to do. The truth is that history is the final arbiter of right and wrong, and the more we learn of the real lives, thoughts and actions of those we look up to, the better we can see that they were not different from ourselves. Historian Joyce Appleby estimates that the average American of the Founders generation drank eight ounces of alcohol a day. Doesn't recent research support the use of moderate amounts of alcohol for digestion and other benefits? HHH!!! Maybe our ancestors were smarter than we thought. High-seas daring and creative bribes reduced British trade regulation to nothing. British efforts to get a piece of this action with unlawful sea-courts, fines, and the elimination of trial by jury helped ignite the Molotov cocktail of revolution. Analguous to today's situation. The smugglers enjoy a certain local legendary status even while the full force of government and military have stripped away the rights and freedoms stipulated in the Constitution. With just enough of life's hard edge removed, the American Whigs, as they called themselves, counted the blessings of America and soon realized what their hard work had earned. Britain's help was mostly incidental in their eyes. So with a little drink, their conversations were raucous and gritty, but also simple and incisive about what the superpower of England was up to and what it would cost them. Today's 'American Whigs' do essentially the same thing. Substitute "Government" for "Britain and England" and you can see that the same things are happening today. "Well," said a fourth, "If Parliament can take away Mr. Hancock's wharf and Mr. Rowe's wharf, they can take away your barn and any house." After much more reasoning in this style, a fifth, who had as yet been silent, broke out, "Well, it's high time for us to rebel; we must rebel some time or other, and we had better rebel now than at any time to come. If we put it off for ten or twenty years, and let them go on as they have begun, they will get a strong party among us, and plague us a great deal more than they can now." Do I have to point out the obvious? Honoring such men means remembering the earthy and soaring qualities that defined that generation. Men who showed how liberty and virtue lift up man to unparalleled vistas and unequaled accomplishments; and men who knew that in a free republic Joe Sixpack would come to be as much the image and stalwart arm of patriotism as any picture of Uncle Sam. Well, yes, it is very dangerous to point out that the very men who formented, and then perpetrated, revolution in the last half of the 1700's are men just like ourselves. That would be tantamount to pointing out that we, too, could overthrow a repressive government. In 1776 only 1/3 of the populace was supportive of the revolution, while 1/3 were supportive of England and the remainder were neutral (no opinion). Instead of "George 3" we are facing "George 2" (with Jeb in training). But it matters not which president is in office, the real power lies elsewhere. It is systemic, and growing stronger with every passing year. We have a Constitution which is being slowly but surely made redundant by the passage of evermore laws, rules and processes that circumvent it. We are taxed, and see that money flow out of the coffers to dissappear into an abyss. We are told that we are too stupid to control our own lives, so government will do it for us. The "Crown Contract Companies" have been replaced by "Corporate America". Drugs (and now cigaretts) have replaced rum and tea as THE smuggled items. We have more people in jail (mostly for simple possession of a controled substance) than any other country. What will it take for the modern patriots of freedom to spill out into the streets for a "Boston Tea Party 2"? What "Intollerable Act"
[CTRL] Right-Wing Takover Of The Court Almost Complete
True believer Widely regarded as a fair-minded moderate, Kenneth Starr comes from a movement of right-wing judicial activists who are determined to revolutionize American law -- and are succeeding. - - - - - - - - - - - - BY BRUCE SHAPIRO The past two weeks have proved devastating to Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr. First, the Supreme Court refused to overturn the ancient rules of attorney-client privilege simply because Starr wanted to review the files of the late Vincent Foster's attorney. Then on Wednesday, Starr received a stunning rebuke from U.S. District Judge James Robertson, who pitched out the window the tax-evasion charges Starr lodged against Webster Hubbell. Echoing what Starr's critics have claimed for months, Judge Robertson found that Starr had exceeded his mandate by prosecuting Hubbell on tax charges unrelated to Whitewater. Worse, he accused Starr of abusing his immunity agreement with Hubbell by going on a "fishing expedition" through Hubbell's finances that would have turned the president's former confidant "into the primary informant against himself." These judicial setbacks, along with the high melodrama of Linda Tripp's grand jury testimony and the continued impasse between Monica Lewinsky and Starr's office (despite near-universal predictions when she ditched William Ginsburg that an immunity agreement was at hand), make it easy enough for the Washington press corps to continue viewing the Starr-Clinton confrontation in the narrowest present-tense frame. It's the sort of memory-free wallow that T.S. Eliot called "the ecstasy of the animals." But as Starr's investigative apparatus clanks onward, with no end in sight, it seems increasingly important to take a longer view of this political crisis. Who is Kenneth Starr and what legal and political forces does he represent? Clinton defenders have asserted that his investigation is part of a right-wing conspiracy against the president. But six months of collective fixation on Starr's investigative abuses obscures a much larger and undeniable right-wing conspiracy in which Judge Starr plays a leading role, one with implications far beyond the closed spin-cycle of Washington. This conspiracy -- in which Whitewater is just one act -- is the conservative campaign to remake American law. To understand this real conspiracy's dimensions, and where Starr's obsessive pursuit of Clinton fits in, go back decades before Monica Lewinsky or the Whitewater real estate deal, to 1952-53. Bill Clinton is a child in segregationist Arkansas, Starr an even-younger minister's son in Texas. The Supreme Court is considering a string of desegregation cases, to culminate in a lawsuit brought by the parents of Linda Brown, an African-American grammar school pupil in Topeka, Kan.: Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. In the chambers of Justice Robert Jackson, one of the justice's clerks broods over the Court's march toward abolition of Southern states' race laws. The Jim Crow doctrine of separate-but-equal, the clerk wrote Jackson, was "right and should be affirmed" as the Supreme Court had done back in 1893. Liberal justices, mostly New Dealers like Hugo Black and William O. Douglas appointed by presidents Roosevelt and Truman, were engaged in "a pathological search for discrimination." The clerk advised Justice Jackson in a memo that, "It is about time the Court faced the fact that white people in the South don't like the colored people." Desegregation is not the only issue raising this particular clerk's ire. A few months earlier, he had bristled at delays in executing Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, convicted of atom-bomb espionage. He couldn't understand, he sneered in a memo to Justice Jackson, "why the highest court in the land must behave like a bunch of old women" whenever it confronted capital punishment. Justice Jackson's clerk -- at 27 years old, no unformed adolescent -- was William Rehnquist, today Chief Justice of the United States. As federal prosecutor Edward Lazarus notes in his recent book "Closed Chambers" (far more scholarly and reflective than its marketing as a former clerk's tell-all memoir would suggest), the disdain Rehnquist reflected in those memos to Justice Jackson would prove prophetic. By the mid-1960s, the specific issues that so angered clerk Rehnquist -- the civil rights movement and capital punishment -- would become flashpoints for a new generation of far-right lawyers. Bearing in one hand the club of state's rights, in the other the truncheon of law-and-order, these conservatives were determined to beat back the era's revolution in civil rights and civil liberties. In the 1960s, the heyday of the Warren Court and the Great Society, the legal right wing seemed little more than an obscure coterie of reactionaries. All the more striking, then, how many of these lawyers are today household names. The key theoretician of this new legal conservatism was Robert Bork, then a Yale Law School professor. As early as 1964 Bork opposed
[CTRL] The Conspiracies of Empire
The Conspiracies of Empire by H. Arthur Scott Trask "Finally I say let demagogues and world-redeemers babble their emptiness to empty ears; twice duped is too much." ~ Robinson Jeffers Day of Deceit: The Truth About FDR and Pearl Harbor by Robert B. Stinnett New York, NY: Free Press; 260pp., $26.00 The late Murray Rothbard often argued that far from being evidence of a "paranoid" strain in the American mind, belief in conspiracies as a factor in American history was usually not taken far enough. The truth behind most conspiracies, he alleged, was far more heinous and diabolical than even the most diehard conspiracy theorist suspected. While many have assumed Rothbard was only being half serious, a new book on the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor by Robert B. Stinnett offers compelling evidence that Murray had it right. The truth that emerges as one makes his way through this exhaustively researched volume is of an American political and military establishment whose brilliance is exceeded only by its utter lack of moral scruple or genuine patriotism. Sixty years after the fateful attack, Stinnett has uncovered, presented, and substantiated the truth behind Pearl Harbor. It is now clear that FDR did know the Japanese attack was coming. He knew more than a year in advance of Japanese plans to bomb the United States’ Pacific fleet at Pearl, and he knew more than a week before that the attack would come early Sunday morning. He knew because American naval intelligence had cracked the Japanese naval codes in the early fall of 1940, 15 months before the fateful attack. The smoke had barely cleared from Pearl Harbor before rightwing journalists, cranky poets, and some Republican politicians began suspecting that somehow Pearl Harbor was all a set-up. Since then, revisionist historians have contended that FDR both provoked and welcomed the war; and some even charged that he knew of the attack beforehand. Establishment historians and government officials countered these charges by insisting that the attack was indeed a surprise due to a failure of American intelligence and incompetence in the naval high command. Stinnett quotes historian Stephen E. Ambrose who claimed, as recently as a 1999 Wall Street Journal editorial, that "the real problem was that American intelligence was terrible." According to Ambrose (who echoes the official story), the navy had not yet broken the Japanese naval codes, and the Japanese task force maintained strict radio silence on its way to Hawaii. As a result, "in late November, intelligence ‘lost’ the Japanese aircraft carrier fleet." Other historians have contended that the Japanese caught us by surprise due to faulty analysis of pretty good intelligence, bureaucratic squabbling among high-level naval officers in Washington, underestimation of Japanese daring and capabilities, and expectations that the attack would come against Dutch or British possessions in East Asia, not against Hawaii. Stinnett exposes each one of these theories to be false. For instance, he amply demonstrates that the ships of the Japanese carrier fleet engaged in daily radio communication with the high command in Japan, military commands in the Central Pacific, and with each other. Stinnett found out the truth by reading American naval intelligence radio intercepts of the Japanese transmissions. American intelligence did not lose the carriers. How did Stinnett manage to uncover the truth when congressional investigations (in both 1945-1946 and 1995) failed to do so? The answer lies in Stinnett’s intelligence, integrity, and unflagging research effort (lasting 17 years), qualities that we know from experience are all too lacking in congressional investigations. But it also lies in a crucial Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by the author in 1983. In that year, Stinnett learned of the existence of the Pacific War communications intelligence files of the United States Navy (a top secret file containing over one million documents relating to U.S. communication intelligence before and during the war). The author’s request was at first denied, but in 1994 the navy decided to declassify the records, or at least most of them. As the Stinnett soon discovered, key intercepts and documents were kept back, some were missing from the records, and other documents had been altered to conceal vital information. However, enough information was released, perhaps inadvertently, to enable Stinnett to piece together the truth. American communication intelligence operations in the Pacific theater was primarily a naval operation. [CTRL] Major Suit Filed To Stop Gold Price Suppression
Major Suit Filed To Stop Gold Price Suppression From GATA Committee [EMAIL PROTECTED] 12-10-00 A lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Boston on behalf of the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee accuses five investment houses, the Bank for International Settlements, and top officials of the U.S. Treasury Department and U.S. Federal Reserve Board of conspiring to suppress the price of gold. The lawsuit, Docket No. 00CV-12485-RCL, charges the defendants with anti-trust violations, securities fraud, and breach of fiduciary duty. The U.S. government officials are also accused of exceeding their constitutional authority. The lawsuit's plaintiff is Reginald H. Howe, a lawyer, gold market analyst, consultant to GATA, proprietor of an Internet site devoted to gold market commentary (www.GoldenSextant.com), and a shareholder of the Bank for International Settlements and Freeport McMoran Copper and Gold Inc. The BIS' plan to cancel those of its shares in private hands so that the bank might become owned entirely by member governments is at the center of the lawsuit. The suit alleges that the BIS proposes to pay its private shareholders substantially less than fair value for their shares. The suit also claims that the BIS, owner of a substantial amount of gold, has been at the center of a scheme with central banks and the investment house defendants to coordinate the sale of gold and gold derivatives to keep the price of gold low and thereby disguise inflation and weakness in the U.S. dollar. Officials of the Federal Reserve Board have no authority to hold directorships of the BIS, the lawsuit alleges. The suit seeks injunctions to stop the Treasury Department and the Fed from intervening in the gold market and to stop the investment houses from manipulating the price of gold; an order to the BIS to compensate its private shareholders fully; and damages against all the defendants for fixing the price of gold. Besides the BIS, the defendants include: Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board; William J. McDonough, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York; Lawrence H. Summers, secretary of the Treasury Department; and J.P. Morgan Co. Inc., Chase Manhattan Corp., Citigroup Inc., Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and Deutsche Bank AG. The text of the lawsuit is posted on the Internet at: www.goldensextant.com/Complaint.html#anchor3130 and www.gata.org/latest.html "With this lawsuit, we hope to mobilize the gold mining industry and gold shareholders around the world to help us restore a free market," GATA Chairman Bill Murphy said. "Mining companies, their employees and shareholders, and developing countries have been ruined by the manipulation of the gold market, and it has prompted ordinary investors around the world to put their savings at greater risk than they would have done otherwise. Meanwhile certain Wall Street interests have made billions from this manipulation. GATA was founded to fight this, and fighting it we are. "But sustaining this lawsuit against defendants that control most of the world's money will cost money itself, and we continue to appeal to gold's friends for financial contributions to support our work." GATA is a educational and charitable organization incorporated in Delaware. Contributions are federally tax-exempt in the United States and may be sent to GATA in care of Chris Powell, secretary/treasurer, 7 Villa Louisa Road, Manchester, Conn. 06043-7541 USA. [CTRL] Information from CounterPunch
-Caveat Lector- My latest CounterPunch came today. It's Vol 7, No 20. This is certainly an interesting issue. I recommend it to one an all. I think the "Blacklisted at the Polls" article which states among other things that throughout Florida, more than l87,000 votes were dismissed, more than half of them from black precincts. The evidence of truly evil Republican efforts to keep blacks and Hispanics from voting is flatly there, and proves just what the Bush family is. One story tells of a man who picked up his wife, his brother, his parents and an aunt and uncle. A block from the polling place, they were pulled over by a county sheriff who asked for a chauffer's license. When he was told this was just a family going to vote, he was told that, "You can't take all those people to the pollig place without a license. Go home and i won't write you a ticket. The people when home and all tried to vote later, but it was too late. Another man was stopped at the door by an election official who asked his name. When he told him, the official told him it said he was a convict and couldn't vote. He told the official that he had never been arrested and handed him his voter ID card. The official just shook his head, smiled and pointed at the list. He never showed me my name. The stories go on and on. Well I guess Bush will get the presidency in the end. After all we have the Bush family in Florida, the Republicans in Congress and the Republican Supreme Court. It's just our cherished democratic society that's getting it in the neck. By the way, the famous Bush morals are mentioned in this issue of CounterPunch as well. I'm sure glad tht Dubya's going to bring honor back to the White House. [CTRL] Demystifying Democracy: And delegitimating the State
-Caveat Lector- http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3a341b9f6f53.htm December 10, 2000 THE UNVEILING Behind the Political Curtain By NEAL GABLER THINGS used to be simpler in America. You could go to a movie and marvel at the special effects without knowing exactly how they were achieved. You could read about your favorite celebrities without wallowing in the lurid details of their personal lives. You could hear of a political accomplishment without knowing the machinations behind it or the depredations of the officials who effected it. In a sense, we lived in blissful ignorance. Sometime after World War II, all that began to change. In an era of postwar disillusionment, the ignorance and innocence gradually gave way to hard-boiled skepticism. Over the last 50 years, journalists began peeling back the layers and fully revealing the people and institutions in which Americans placed their faith. What they found underneath wasn't pretty namely, that so much of what we cherished was a sham. Now, after the legal wrangling last week in Florida, this long process of demystification may have reached a kind of climax with the shattering of one of our last illusions that our vote, the source of democratic power, is pure. This is no small matter. But it may have led to something more important. By demystifying the vote, Americans have effected a transfer of power from the traditional political realm, where the franchise is what mattered, to the more amorphous cultural realm, where what mattered most was seeing things without illusions, even the illusion that the electoral process was sacred. Before this final epiphany, Americans had discovered that they had been the victims of a series of deceptions, which is what the historian Daniel Boorstin was getting at back in 1961 when he coined the term " pseudo-event" in his path-breaking book "The Image." Pseudo-events were manipulations by public relations operatives to gain public attention. They looked genuine, but were confected, and, as Mr. Boorstin observed, quickly began to "flood our consciousness." Movie premieres, award ceremonies, press conferences all were pseudo-events operating in the guise of reality, and we had been the dupes. Though this sort of deception was omnipresent in America, politics was one of its main arenas. What we saw during a campaign was a candidate addressing the faithful on the stump or engaged in debate or answering voters' questions to show who he was and what he thought. What we didn't see was that the faithful had been bused in and prepped to cheer, the debate answers scripted and the voters' questions screened. In fact, as late as 1968, it came as a shock when Joe McGinniss revealed in "The Selling of the President" that Richard M. Nixon's presidential campaign had been stage- managed by media advisers not to show who Nixon was but to conceal who he was. STILL, the demystification of politics may have been harder for Americans to accept than the demystification of Hollywood or athletics. It wasn't that they were deluded enough to believe the system was pristine. They knew about the old Pendergast machine in Kansas City and Tammany Hall in New York. They knew, too, about Teapot Dome, where corruption invaded the inner sanctums of the White House and the Capitol. But these were regarded as abuses of the system, not endemic to it. Americans clung to the belief that the system was sound and democracy inviolate. They even believed their leaders were generally decent and honorable men, statesmen rather than hacks, which is why the president nearly always topped the list of the most respected people in the nation. But in an atmosphere of demystification, even this belief could withstand only so many blows before it began to crumble. The whacks came swiftly and often: the scandals of the Truman administration; Eisenhower aide Sherman Adams receiving gifts, including a vicuna coat, from a lobbyist; the swindles of Lyndon B. Johnson's crony, Billy Sol Estes; allegations of banking violations against Jimmy Carter's budget head Bert Lance; the Abscam scandals in which congressmen were trapped in an F.B.I. sting; the conviction of Dan Rostenkowski, powerful head of the House Ways and Means Committee, for misusing federal funds and padding his payroll, to name only a few on a long, long list. And graft was the least of it. One could always understand the temptations of lucre. It was more difficult to excuse the weakness of the flesh, in part because it had always been carefully hidden from public scrutiny through a sort of gentleman's agreement between the press and the politicians. When it was finally revealed, it arrived not as high tragedy but as low comedy. Wilbur Mills, a predecessor of Mr. Rostenkowski as Ways and Means chairman, was found to have had a drunken frolic with an Argentine stripper named Fanne Foxe; Representative Wayne Hays, chairman of the House Administration Committee, was found to have had an affair with a staff

[CTRL] The Truth
-Caveat Lector- http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~alb/misc/truth.html The Truth These are some basic truths about our society today. Look around, see for yourself. I am not going to be sidetracked into the wasted effort of ``proving'' these things here for people who will not listen anyway [but please see the additional reading section]. Listen to me, listen to the press, listen to the government. Who do you believe? The United States Government tortures its own citizens. We go around the world talking about human rights, but agents of the U.S. government have not hesitated to commit the most vicious crimes against humanity right here at home. The political reality is that the U.S. is the leading economic and political power in the world, and the only superpower. Thus the U.S. government can maintain its pious hypocritical stance without fear of ``serious'' exposure. Our government has grossly abused its current power. It has wasted a chance to be a world role model for ethical government, and the chance likely will never come again. The U.S. Constitution is just a piece of paper to covert thugs. The only rights you have are the ones you can enforce. Here in the land of High Noon, despite all the talk to the contrary, it is every man for himself. There are plenty of people who would love to see you literally tortured if you differ from them on the most minor political points. We lead the world in the technology of warfare and espionage. The same technology is used to suppress and harass so-called dissidents or ``threatening'' people and movements. If you cannot prove it happened, and the weapons officially do not exist, then nothing really happened, did it? ``Freedom'' is an empty concept used for social control. You are free only to the extent that you do not, for any reason, step on the toes of any ``important'' people. You may not even know what you have done, and may never find out: The repressive machinery will kick into gear and your life will be ruined. You may even come to realize that a campaign of dirty tricks is being focused on you, but no one will believe you. Most people live boring (to others) lives that do not threaten the powerful, and therefore do not draw the attention of the repressive apparatus. Thus the myth of freedom is perpetuated, while you are labeled a paranoid kook. The rhetoric of freedom is at least useful in that it forces the repression into covert channels. That is why I can openly post this list. The elite and powerful in the U.S. are effectively immune to law. The law is a tool to serve the ends of the powerful. Selective enforcement is the norm. Of course, the powerful have their own sets of laws they use to attack each other. Bad policies, based on misguided notions and a patronizing, pseudo-moralizing paternalism, produce disastrous consequences. Politicians cynically exploit the resulting suffering to maintain their positions of power, reinforcing the misguided policies. Police on the street end up paying the price, bearing the brunt of enforcing bad laws. The elite opinion-makers are not nearly as smart as they think they are. Their insular debates are frequently characterized by ignorance and outright stupidity. This tendency is heavily abetted by a forced conformity of belief. The price of mounting too strong a challenge to a ``politically powerful'' idea is ostracism and ridicule by their peers. Soon, testing ideas for political viability or against projected poll results becomes a substitute for critical thinking. The mainstream press will not challenge -- and at times participates in -- outrageous governmental abuses. Watergate and the investigations of intelligence abuses in the mid-'70s were historical rarities. The press routinely cooperates in a conspiracy of silence -- even when innocent American lives are being destroyed and hideous crimes are being committed. The investigations of intelligence abuses in the '70s were also not especially effective. The investigators were completely outclassed by a group of professional liars, trained to subvert governments worldwide. The Cold War was still on, giving additional clout to the apologists for domestic crimes committed by our own forces. The ``intelligence community'' is well aware of the limited attention span of the American press, and repeatedly and effectively uses stonewalling, or worse, to escape any responsibility or accountability for its actions. The reforms of the '70s were subsequently largely reversed. We need a sustained, nonpartisan political consensus to clean out our nation's dirty secrets, give the domestic victims redress, punish the Cold War criminals, and start fresh without the baggage of secret, unacknowledged atrocities. The ``ruling class'' elites typically respond positively only to the threat of losing their privileged positions or of violence. That is just how it is. It often takes a riot or other violent actions to even draw their
[CTRL] Canadian and U.S. Survivors Seek Justice
-Caveat Lector- http://www.webcom.com/ctka/pr300-mkultra.html From the March-April 2000 issue (Vol. 7 No. 3) Mind-Control Part 1: Canadian and U.S. Survivors Seek Justice "Curiously, often a classic manifestation of people who are afflicted with certain psychotic disorders is the irrational fear that the CIA and FBI is conspiring to harm them. In this case, the CIA involvement is real and the covert nature of the involvement is not contested." Orlikow v. United States (1988)1 By Arlene Tyner Gripping survivor-centered accounts of medical atrocities committed by CIA-funded mind-control (MC) researchers during the Cold War are rarely found in traditional U.S. media.2 Neither are they the subject of emotionally powerful TV docu-dramas commonly produced for broadcast and cable television. In January 1998, the Canadian Broadcasting System (CBC) courageously filled this void, although the blackout on government MC history is near-total in the U.S. The Sleep Room, a gut-wrenching four-hour miniseries, depicts the true story of Dr. Ewen Camerons secret MKULTRA brainwashing experiments carried out in the late 50s and early 60s at Allan Memorial Institute in Montreal. Widespread publicity accompanying this major TV event has empowered many other Canadian survivors of nonconsensual brainwashing experiments in hospitals and prisons to come forward and seek justice in the courts.3 In Part I of the miniseries, gifted actors dramatize how vulnerable, trusting hospital patients were transformed into virtual vegetables through doses of "electroconvulsive therapy" 30-40 times more powerful than usual, sensory deprivation, hallucinogenic and paralytic drugs, and other psychological and physical tortures. Part II grippingly depicts the successful eight-year U.S. lawsuit of nine survivors, who overcame fear to confront the humiliations and frustrating delay tactics of the CIA lawyers. Joseph L. Rauh, Jr., a legendary Washington civil rights attorney, and his partner James C. Turner eventually prevailed for their clients. In 1988, the U.S. "national security" establishment agreed to an out-of-court settlement of $750,000.4 This extraordinary CBC drama was based on Anne Collins prize-winning 1989 book In the Sleep Room: The Story of CIA Brainwashing Experiments in Canada. Collins exposed Camerons 1930s-1940s history of ethically unsupportable experiments on psychiatric patients. Many of the people methodically abused by Cameron had entered the Institute suffering only from mild disorders such as anxiety and post-partum depression. By the time they were released from the Sleep Room torture chamber, many had decades of memory completely wiped out. Some did not remember their children and even had to relearn bladder and bowel control. A U.S. citizen since 1941, the Scottish-born Cameron resided in Albany, New York, from which he commuted to Montreal each week. Before taking on the directorship at Allan Memorial, which is associated with McGill University, Cameron was chair of psychiatry and neurology at a medical school in Albany. He worked closely with Alan Gregg, medical-sciences director of the Rockefeller Foundation, which provided grants to found the Institute in 1943.5 As director from 1943 to 1964, Cameron achieved a worldwide reputation, serving as the first chair of the World Psychiatric Association, as well as president of the American and Canadian psychiatric associations. In one barely watchable scene of institutional cruelty, Cameron is filmed delivering a speech to psychiatrists about his successes in "curing" mental illness. As he drones on, the camera switches to scenes of terrified resisting patients being captured and restrained by doctors and nurses, forcibly being dosed with drugs and high-voltage electroshock, then put to sleep for weeks at a time in a room full of beds equipped with tape recorders and football helmets. Winner in 1998 of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Televisions Gemini Awards in best picture and other categories, The Sleep Room touched the raw nerves of Canadian citizens. Not only did they learn their government had been the CIAs junior consort during the Cold War against Communism, they also discovered it had secretly granted $500,000 to fund the Allan Memorial experiments. The CIA had only given Cameron $69,000 from 1957 to 1964. As the lawsuit dragged on through the Reagan presidency, Rauh was forced to expose the Canadian governments role in helping the CIA derail the lawsuit, in complete disregard for pain and lifelong suffering of its own citizens.6 In 1992 the Canadian government coughed up $100,000 for 76 Cameron victims. To date 127 of his patients have come forward with their horror stories to seek compensation. CIA psychologist John Gittinger initiated contact with Cameron after reading his article on "Psychic Driving" in the January 1956 American Journal of Psychiatry. Gittinger persuaded Cameron to apply

[CTRL] Fwd: Rehnquist Got Partisan Start Suppressing Black Vote
-Caveat Lector- Just Our Bill by Dennis Roddy, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Saturday, December 02, 2000 Lito Pena is sure of his memory. Thirty-six years ago he, then a Democratic Party poll watcher, got into a shoving match with a Republican who had spent the opening hours of the 1964 election doing his damnedest to keep people from voting in south Phoenix. "He was holding up minority voters because he knew they were going to vote Democratic," said Pena. The guy called himself Bill. He knew the law and applied it with the precision of a swordsman. He sat at the table at the Bethune School, a polling place brimming with black citizens, and quizzed voters ad nauseam about where they were from, how long they'd lived there -- every question in the book. A passage of the Constitution was read and people who spoke broken English were ordered to interpret it to prove they had the language skills to vote. By the time Pena arrived at Bethune, he said, the line to vote was four abreast and a block long. People were giving up and going home. Pena told the guy to leave. They got into an argument. Shoving followed. Arizona politics can be raw. Finally, Pena said, the guy raised a fist as if he was fixing to throw a punch. "I said 'If that's what you want, I'll get someone to take you out of here'." Party leaders told him not to get physical, but this was the second straight election in which Republicans had sent out people to intellectually rough up the voters. The project even had a name: Operation Eagle Eye. Pena had a group of 20 iron workers holed up in a motel nearby. He dispatched one who grabbed Bill and hustled him out of the school. "He was pushing him across a yard and backed him into the school building," Pena remembered. Others in Phoenix remember Operation Eagle Eye, too. Charlie Stevens, then the head of the local Young Republicans, said he got a phone call from the same lawyer Pena remembered throwing out of Bethune School. The guy wanted to know why Charlie hadn't joined Operation Eagle Eye. "I think they called them flying squads," Stevens said. "It was perfectly legal. The law at the time was that you had to be able to read English and interpret what you read." But he didn't like the idea and he told Bill this. "My parents were immigrants," Stevens said. They'd settled in Cleveland, Ohio, a pair of Greeks driven out of Turkey who arrived in the United States with broken English and a desire to be American. After their son went to law school and settled in Phoenix, he even Americanized the name. Charlie Tsoukalas became Charlie Stevens. "I didn't think it was proper to challenge my dad or my mother to interpret the Constitution," Stevens said. "Even people who are born here have trouble interpreting the Constitution. Lawyers have trouble interpreting it." The guy told Stevens that if he felt that way about it, then he could take a pass. There was nothing illegal going on there, Stevens said. "It just violated my principles. I had a poor family. I grew up in the projects in Cleveland, Ohio." Operation Eagle Eye had a two-year run. Eventually, Arizona changed the laws that had allowed the kind of challenges that had devolved into bullying. Pena went on to serve 30 years in the Arizona State Legislature. Stevens became a prosperous and well-regarded lawyer in Phoenix and helped Sandra Day O'Connor get her start in law. The guy Pena remembers tossing out of Bethune School prospered, too. Bill Rehnquist, now better known as William H. Rehnquist, chief justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, presided yesterday over a case that centers on whether every vote for president was properly recorded in the state of Florida. In his confirmation hearings for the court in 1971, Rehnquist denied personally intimidating voters and gave the explanation that he might have been called to polling places on Election Day to arbitrate disputes over voter qualifications. Fifteen years later, three more witnesses, including a deputy U.S. attorney, told of being called to polling places and having angry voters point to Rehnquist as their tormentor. His defenders suggested it was a case of mistaken identity. Now, with the presidency in the balance, Rehnquist has been asked to read passages of the Constitution and interpret them. Once again, a reading and interpretation will determine whose vote gets to count. [CTRL] The Secrecy Police Will Be Back Soon
-Caveat Lector- Sunday, December 10, 2000 The Secrecy Police Will Be Back Soon http://www.latimes.com/news/comment/20001210/t000118099.html By DAVID WISE WASHINGTON--President Bill Clinton will be remembered for many things, not all of them wonderful, but not the least of his legacy is that in the waning days of his presidency, he preserved the 1st Amendment by vetoing a bill that would have created a British-style Official Secrets Act in America. Yet, supporters of the bill are bound to try again in the new Congress. While the nation was focused on the presidential election in the weeks before the bitter legal battle in Florida, a CIA-sponsored bill was slipped through Congress, with no public hearings, that would have handed to the executive branch the equivalent of the "crown privilege" that restricts press freedom in Britain. The measure was sponsored by Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.), chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Rep. Porter J. Goss (R-Fla.) chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and the only acknowledged former CIA clandestine officer in Congress. It was introduced at the behest of CIA director George J. Tenet, who strongly supported it. The bill would have created criminal penalties for government officials who leak "classified information" to reporters. Violators could be prosecuted and sent to prison for three years, fined $10,000, or both. To the uninitiated, the language might sound reasonable, since the law would apply only to the release of "properly classified" information. But the measure would have had a chilling effect on the flow of vital information to the public. To gather the news, reporters depend on easy access to government officials; there are dozens of such interviews, backgrounders and press briefings every day in Washington. But officials in the State Department, the CIA, the Pentagon and other agencies would surely hesitate to talk to the news media if a slip of the tongue might mean one to three years at Lompoc, Calif.--if they were lucky--or the maximum-security pen at Marion, Ill.--if they were not. A secrets law would inevitably lead to search warrants, subpoenas and wiretaps of the press as government gumshoes tried to ferret out the source of news leaks. Officials have been frustrated for years by unauthorized leaks. President Richard M. Nixon resigned in 1974 because the "plumbers" unit he secretly created to plug news leaks broke into Democratic Party headquarters in the Watergate. The government's civilian classification system did not exist until Sept. 24, 1951, when President Harry S. Truman issued the first executive order to create it. Subsequent presidents have issued similar executive orders; the current order was promulgated by Clinton in 1995. The president's executive order is not a law. It does not apply to anyone other than government employees or contractors. The president can issue an executive order declaring Smokey the Bear the official symbol of the Forest Service, but that does not affect citizens outside government. Ordinary Americans are free to regard Smokey as a fine bear, an important symbol to remind us to put out campfires, or they are free to think that Smokey is a rogue bear who ate a forest ranger to get that funny hat. The point is, presidents don't make laws. Stamping a document "secret" or with some other important-sounding designation, which bureaucrats in Washington do, on average, 22,000 times every day, does not make it a law. According to Steven Garfinkel, the government official who keeps track of such matters as head of the Information Security Oversight Office, there were 8,038,592 secrets classified last year, a 10% increase over the previous year. Almost half the secrets were classified by the CIA. Imagine a government official having lunch with a reporter and discussing, for example, the delayed decision on whether to build a national missile defense system. The failure of the "kill" vehicle to destroy missiles in previous tests has been widely reported. The official, however, if the secrecy bill should become law, would have no way of knowing whether that fact was one of those 8 million classified secrets. He might prefer to talk about his daughter's soccer team. As it is, far too many documents are classified by the wielders of secrecy stamps. During World War II, the Army classified the bow and arrow as a "silent flashless weapon." Some officials know that unless they take a rubber stamp from their desk drawer and mark a piece of paper "secret," their boss may not bother to look at it. Even government press briefers were appalled at Congress' handiwork. Kenneth H. Bacon, assistant defense secretary for public affairs, warned that if the "anti-leak" provision became law, he might have a problem, since he sometimes answers questions with classified information. Bacon's warning provided ammunition for Clinton, who said in his

General James Rose General Rose recommended George W. Bush for a pilot position with the Texas National Guard. He died of unknown causes in 1993. He was immediately buried and no autopsy was performed. -Caveat Lector- CIA warns US faces biggest threat since World War II http://www.dawn.com/2000/12/09/int1.htm LOS ANGELES, Dec 8: The 'wild card' of technology - from nuclear proliferation to the information revolution - has left US interests more susceptible to terrorist attack than at any time since the end of World War Two, CIA Director George Tenet said on Thursday. Tenet said America's technical superiority in intelligence gathering was under threat from such rapid advances, while the "evil mix of fanaticism and flexibility" behind the October attack on the USS Cole made the next strike "not a question of if, but of when and where." Tenet, addressing a Los Angeles luncheon in a rare public speech, declined to talk in detail about the Oct. 12 apparent suicide bombing of the Cole in Yemen. But he said the attack was a grim reminder of the "terrorist foe without heart or pity" that threatened US interests around the world on a daily basis. "We are in an environment where we are literally inundated with threats and warnings all the time," Tenet said in response to a question about the Cole. "Making sense of disparate threats is sometimes very difficult to do in the time available. We have deterred a great number of terrorist events. But you will not bat 100 (percent) with these people." US officials have said Saudi Arabian exile Osama bin Laden is considered a prime suspect in the planning of the Cole attack but they have not established a definitive link. Seventeen American sailors were killed when a small boat filled with explosives blew up alongside the USS Cole in the port of Aden in Yemen. Tenet said the destabilizing effects of ethnic conflicts, easy access to information such as satellite imagery, and the proliferation of nuclear weapon technology made for a world without front lines. "We in the intelligence community believe the chances for unpleasant - even deadly - surprise are greater now than at any time since the end of the Second World War," Tenet said. The CIA chief called rapid advances in technology the "wild card" in the volatile equation surrounding the military, commercial and diplomatic dominance of the United States since the end of the Cold War. "I will be blunt with you: the pace of technological change threatens to erode America's technical advantage in intelligence - an advantage that has long been a pillar of our national security," Tenet said. He said the CIA was pushing for investments in technology and in people to ensure that the United States does not fall "totally behind the curve." Despite issues ranging from drug trafficking and cyber warfare to humanitarian crises which he said had stretched the capabilities of US intelligence to their limit, Tenet said the CIA had a long list of accomplishments. - More than two dozen terrorists - more than half of them linked to Osama bin Laden - brought to justice around the world since July 1998. - Support of US government efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East. - Zero US casualties in daily American air patrols of the no-fly zone in Iraq in the past 10 years. That speaks for itself. Charles Manson is probably as famous as Jack the Ripper. He doesn't get out on parole because he's famous for being dangerous, even though there are far more dangerous people released all the time -- like those people Clinton granted Clemency to. Like Sadam Hussein who killed thousands of his own people and is still walking around. Like that Slobadan Milosevic (sp) who extinguished thousands of his own people and he's still walking around. When your crimes are political, you get a slap on the wrist. They take your country away from you. But you don't go to jail. Some people are given life in prison for just one murder, depending on how bad it was. Maybe that's why some people seek public office -- they can kill indiscriminately and know they're immune to the REAL prosecution we commoners face every day. About Heaven's Gate, why are you always for the perpetrator? Weak minded people are people who have mental health problems, self-esteem problems, or abused in life etc. Actually some psychologists and psychiatrists would disagree with your statement about mental illness and weak-mindedness going hand in hand. Some psychiatrists believe that many with schizophrenia are tapping into something in the mind that most people never encounter fully. Some names who thought along these lines: Carl Jung, Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche and Thomas Szasz. Here are a few links: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Olympus/5214/who.html http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Olympus/5214/links.html There are a lot of people out there that can be mind controlled by the right person because some of them do it well. What about the Guyana Tragedy? That man convinced at least about 900 (don't really know no.) people to commit suicide. Are they bad people and they are responsible for their lives? Survival of the fittest probably applies more to the mental than the physical. If they were weak-minded enough to allow someone else to control their minds, then that's their tough noogies. Mind control is real and has been going on for centuries. Sounds like you have taken a liking for this man. Would you know him then if you were younger since you believe him? You consider him funny. Not having personally met the man, I can't say one way or the other how I feel about him. It's kind of like some friends I had -- they were perfectly nice to me, but were not so nice to some other people. Perhaps Manson and I would be pals. I doubt I'll ever meet him, but he's sure to have some friends someplace or else he would have been offed by now. If he's an expert at mind control, he's probably got the whole prison so afraid that if they kill him, they'll be possessed by demons or something. :-) A jury did believe this. He is in jail. He never gets out on parole not from prejudice. He is still considered harmful to society. Please read the right books. Not from someone like Charles Manson himself. He is a big liar. You must be young, naive or from a great upbringing not to know all about this man. But people are certainly free to read his books. I would not want to make ANY judgments about Manson based on what someone else has written about him until I've read his books for myself. It's called having a balanced slate of information with which to form a judgment. According to what I was led to believe , was that everyone was lying down and dead from drinking the poison. So really, I would like to know then if not everyone committed suicide, what really happened there? I think people get upset when they're told something and later find out that it wasn't true. People expect the truth at all times. Those of us who have become skeptical of information given as "truth" are coming up with alternative theories to life and reality itself. There's no way to know that any of it is actually true beyond that intuitive feeling that makes you believe it. This is a conspiracy theorist's list and being such, alternative theories are a common thing. Everybody has an opinion. Some people won't believe anything without hard proof. Those are people who want to keep their feet grounded in proven facts, and they won't question anything that's proven as fact. They accept what they're spoon fed and they believe that faith is for the weak minded. Yet they have great faith that what they're being spoon-fed is really true. As conspiracy theorists, we question the truth. We're skeptical of things touted as truth and so we may often change our ideas, which gives us less credibility except among ourselves. We're going nowhere fast, most likely, but when ths caca hits the fan and all the lies and deceit are exposed and the truth comes out in full view, who will be more equipped to handle a rapidly changing world than we conspiracy theorists who have years of practice changing our minds about what we believe? Who will become the new schizophrenics of the world but the ones who bronzed their beliefs to stand the test of time? Right now we're the quacks of the world. But I don't think that will always be so. But are you basing your opinions solely on facts you've pieced together or have you brainstormed to find any new connections -- made some presumptions or intuitive guesswork? If you haven't that's not a bad thing. But in my example above of people who never believe anything that isn't proven with hard facts, they are as stagnant in growth as the conspiracy theorists, but for different reasons. For example, I KNOW there's life beyond Planet Earth. I just know it. I haven't seen it and I can't prove it, but logic dictates that in all the billions of galaxies, there is something else alive out there. Scientists won't believe it until they see it. They can theorize as I've done above. But while I do believe that there is life on other worlds, I don't necessarily credit eartly events to alien activity. Believing in life on other worlds is one thing and believing they're here is something else. I haven't seriously thought about alien presence on earth in a couple or three years. At one point I so strongly believed it that I had visions and experiences proving it to me. I believed I had some purpose to fulfill that would get underway when aliens landed. I believed my purpose was to help the world understand what was happening -- to be in my true alien form, loving, caring, happy, cheerful, helpful, honest and exist among the people and be at their complete service -- to be an example of love. Then as people decide in their own time that they want to see space, they can. Now, I still consider that scenario. I still sit back and think about it a little to see how it fits in with other things going on in my life. But I don't base my every action on my hope of doing one of the two things that would make me happy, one of those being what I described above. I go to the movies, play video games, look at porno on the 'net, play with the dogs, consider new job opportunities, run my paid-to-surf programs, etc I don't talk about these kinds of things with people I'm close to because they don't want to hear it. I don't run around chanting "love and light" or "I AM that I am". I'm me. I'm a quiet person and I like to keep to myself a lot. I enjoy being alone and I enjoy being left alone. [CTRL] Fwd: A 'Modern' Democracy That Can't Count Votes (LA Times)
-Caveat Lector- --- http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/decision2000/lat_vote001211.htm Monday, December 11, 2000 A 'Modern' Democracy That Can't Count Votes Special Report: What happened in Florida is the rule and not the exception. A coast-to-coast study by The Times finds a shoddy system that can only be trusted when the election isn't close. By Times Staff Writers Because ballots can be bought, stolen, miscounted, lost, thrown out or sent to Denmark, nobody knows with any precision how many votes go uncounted in American elections. For weeks, Florida has riveted the nation with a mind-numbing array of failures: misleading ballots, contradictory counting standards, discarded votes--19,000 in one county alone. But an examination by The Times in a dozen states from Washington to Texas to New York shows that Florida is not the exception. It is the rule. State and local officials give priority to curbing crime, filling potholes and picking up trash. That often leaves elections across the country underfunded, badly managed, ill equipped and poorly staffed. Election workers are temporaries, pay is a pittance, training is brief and voting systems are frequently obsolete. "You know why we never paid attention to this until now?" asks Candy Marendt, co-director of the Indiana Elections Division. "I'll tell you: because we don't really want to know. We don't want to know that our democracy isn't really so sacred. . . . "It can be very ugly." The examination shows: * New York City voters use metal lever-action machines so old they are no longer made, each with 27,000 parts. Similar machines in Louisiana are vulnerable to rigging with pliers, a screwdriver, a cigarette lighter and a Q-Tip. * In Texas, "vote whores" do favors for people in return for their absentee ballots. Sometimes the canvassers or consultants, as they prefer to be called, simply buy the ballots. Failing all else, they steal them from mailboxes. * Alaska has more registered voters than voting-age people. Indiana, which encourages voting with sign-ups by mail and at driver's license bureaus, has jammed its registration lists with hundreds of thousands of people who should not be on them. They include felons, the dead and many who have registered repeatedly. * In Oregon, a preliminary survey indicates that more than 36,000 of the state's 1.5 million voters may have mailed in ballots this year that were signed by someone else. Some students in Wisconsin say they voted as many as four times. * Louisiana's former election commissioner, Jerry Fowler, pleaded guilty 14 days ago to a kickback scheme with a voting machine dealer. Even when relationships are legal, lines of authority blur. In the state of Washington, dealers program vote counters. In Arizona, they go as far as to help feed in the ballots. To many Americans, the right to vote is sacred, a hard-won legacy of the women's suffrage and civil rights movements. Memories of those 20th century struggles remain fresh among voters of the new century. Yet the system that counts their ballots has fallen into disarray and dysfunction. About These Stories These stories were reported by Michael Finnegan in New York; Claudia Kolker in Alice, Texas; Judy Pasternak and Alan C. Miller in Washington, D.C.; Stephanie Simon in St. Louis and Baton Rouge, La.; Eric Slater in Indianapolis; Kim Murphy in Seattle; Terril Yue Jones in Milwaukee and Madison, Wis.; Michael Krikorian in Cleveland; Robert J. Lopez in Phoenix and Yuma, Ariz.; Rich Connell in Portland and Salem, Ore.; William C. Rempel in New York and Philadelphia; Mark Arax in Fresno; Julie Cart in Denver; and Steve Berry, Nona Yates and Ray F. Herndon in Los Angeles. They were researched by Jacquelyn Cenacveira, Vicki Gallay, John Jackson, Janet Lundblad and Cary Schneider in Los Angeles, John Beckham in Chicago, Lynn Marshall in Seattle and Sunny Kaplan in Washington. They were written by David Ferrell and Richard E. Meyer in Los Angeles and Judy Pasternak in Washington. The voting system is so troubled that the National Bureau of Standards, a federal agency now known as the National Institute of Standards and Technology, said 12 years ago that an election mainstay, prescored punch-card ballots, should be junked--but more than 500 counties throughout the nation still use them. Federal standards for voting equipment took effect in 1990, but they are not mandatory. A number of states, including Florida, have written some or all of the standards into their own codes. But all existing equipment was excepted, meaning that decades-old systems in Florida and elsewhere are exempt. America has
[CTRL] BSE from space?
-Caveat Lector- Nice try, but I don't buy it. The 'logic' used here doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Why would Mad Cow Disease have only begun to appear about 10 years ago? Many Brits do keep their cattle in for the winter. I lived therefor 3 years and witnessed the practice. Many cattle ranchers in this country winter their cattle outdoors. If this theory is true why didn't Mad Cow Disease show up here, or does cosmic dust only rain down on Britain? Also, funding was withdrawn by the NIH for researchers investigating a viral or bacterial cause of BSE, but instead given to researchers who only investigated prions as the cause of this disease. One researcher who has been ignored by his collegues and the press contends that the BSE infective process involves prions, but is triggered by a virus. So why would funding have been withdrawn from research investigating the viral link? IMcynicalO, this a convenient cover for laboratory maufactured disease! ~ M http://farshores.topcities.com/farshores/nmadcow.htm Mad Cow Disease 'Came From Space' Says Prof [Original headline: MAD COW DISEASE 'CAME FROM SPACE' ] Mad cow disease may have been caused by cattle eating dust from space, scientists claim. The experts believe particles from passing comets entered the Earth's atmosphere, bringing with them micro-bacteria. Cows then became infected by eating the bacteria lying on grass in the fields. The startling theory is the brainchild of astronomy professor Chandra Wickramasinghe, of the University of Wales, backed by his Cambridge University counterpart, Professor Sir Fred Hoyle. Professor Wickramasinghe said: "Bacteria descends through the stratosphere in winter, and you can't think of a better way to mop it up than by cattle roaming from field to field. "We believe the almost unique Welsh and English practice of out-wintering cattle explains why BSE hit more severely here. "It may seem a way-out position. But the theory is starting to gain currency. "As Sherlock Holmes says, 'If all other possibilities have been ruled out whatever is left, however unlikely, must be true'." Originally published by The Mirror / London - December 7 2000 COMMENT: The theory of Wickramasinghe and his colleague Fred Hoyle [authors of 'Diseases from Space'] has a great deal of merit. Here is an excerpt from the recent British Government 16-volume official BSE report: "The pathogen that wipes out memory, personality and physical functions is extraordinarily tenacious. It resists heat, alcohol, boiling, ultraviolet light and ionizing radiation. Surgical instruments that come in contact with it can remain contaminated after normal sterilization procedures, and researchers don body protection before handling it." -Caveat Lector- http://www.eurekalert.org/releases/ns-bnw120700.html FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 7 DECEMBER 2000 UK Contact: Claire Bowles [EMAIL PROTECTED] 44-0-207-331-2751 US Contact: New Scientist Washington office [EMAIL PROTECTED] 202-452-1178 New Scientist Bizarre new way to propel a spacecraft If you thought warp drive was weird, try jolt propulsion A JUDDERING magnet has inspired a scientist at the US Department of Energy to investigate a bizarre new way of propelling a spacecraft. The idea for a "judder-drive" struck David Goodwin when he noticed that powerful cryogenically cooled superconducting magnets often jolt in one direction for a centimetre or two when you first turn them on. "If you have something metal in the magnetic field as it is forming, you see the magnet physically shift," Goodwin, who works at the Office of High Energy and Nuclear Physics in Germantown, Maryland, told New Scientist. Superconducting magnets are cooled to such a low temperature that they have no electrical resistance. Goodwin's magnets were made by taking superconducting wires of niobium-tin alloy and twisting the strands into a cable. The cables were then coated with an insulator and wound into a coil. "The coil's then put into a cylindrical casing called a cryostat that's filled with liquid helium," says Goodwin. The liquid helium cools the wire coil to -269 ¡C, when they become superconducting. Goodwin says the metal objects create the judder effect by inducing a "brief asymmetry in the magnetic field" as it is set up when the magnet is turned on. This initial disturbance of the magnetic field, he says, creates a repulsive force on the magnet and pushes it away. But the force produced in one jolt is very low, Goodwin says, so you would need to turn the magnet on and off with ultrafast switches, making a fast stream of jolts. "We've got switches now that can work at high voltages at 400,000 times a second," he says. "If you could use one of these switches to rapidly switch the magnet on and off, you might get some propulsion out of it." A colleague of Goodwin's at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York is now modelling the magnetic field of superconducting magnets to work out how best to arrange a metallic disc in the magnetic field to produce the biggest jolt. But Goodwin admits the judder drive might be going nowhere fast. "It's very speculative. We don't know if it'll work," he says. Marc Millis, who heads NASA's breakthrough propulsion physics project at the NASA Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field in Cleveland, Ohio, has invited Goodwin to present his idea at a propulsion conference in July next year. The crucial thing, says Millis, is whether Goodwin's magnet would produce any net motion at all-it might just sit there and vibrate. "It's a definite possibility that any forces arising from Goodwin's concept will only act within the components of the device itself, resulting in no net force," he says. "There are a lot of unresolved physics issues to address." ### Author: Ian Sample, London New Scientist issue: 9th December 2000 SOURCE - NEW SCIENTIST, http://www.newscientist.com Back to EurekAlert! [CTRL] Mystery of the fireball from the sky deepens
-Caveat Lector- http://www.concordmonitor.com/stories/front0400/salisbury_fireball.shtml Mystery of the fireball from the sky deepens If Monday's fire wasn't caused by a meteorite, what was it? Thursday, December 7, 2000 By STEPHANIE HANES Monitor staff Salisbury SALISBURY - Ron Baalke of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab saw the story about the meteorite in a small New Hampshire town online. It seemed a spectacular occurrence - meteorites are rare to begin with, but it's unheard of to see one land on Earth still burning. So, on his California computer, he forwarded the news to a London-based electronic network that disseminates information on catastrophic asteroids and cosmic disasters. The "CCNet" published Baalke's post about the supposed Granite State meteorite, and sky-minded scientists across the world read the news. Salisbury, New Hampshire, was famous. Since Paul Kornexl and Donna Ayoub saw a fireball plummet from the sky into the woods behind their houses Monday evening, Salisbury and its potential meteorite have gained worldwide attention. While Kornexl, Ayoub and her husband, Dave, continued to scour the muddy ground yesterday for extraterrestrial signs, scientists from New Mexico to Moscow - aided by the more-familiar science of the Internet - were conjecturing on just what happened behind quiet Hensmith Road. The first report that had come out of Salisbury said a meteorite had landed in the woods behind 129 and 137 (which are next to each other) Hensmith Road. The blazing softball-sized object had started two small fires in the dried leaves Monday evening, and neighbors had rushed to douse the flames. "It's a little weird for my book," said the fire dispatcher Monday. "I've never had anything drop out of the sky on my watch." By the time firefighters arrived on scene the blaze was extinguished. But the curiosity wasn't. Kornexl had been standing next to his shed when he saw the fireball land. "I was dumbfounded," he said. The next day, when a scientist from the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium examined the scene, and other experts pieced together the reported details, the explanation of a meteorite seemed less and less plausible. A meteorite would not have been burning when it hit the ground, scientists said. It would have left a crater when it landed and it would not have come in on an arc like residents described. But the woods were deserted. Kornexl, who spent six years in the Army, said the scene didn't fit with any weapon he knew of. And air control and military officials said there was nothing overhead at the time. So the question lingered. What sort of unearthly visitor had shown up in Salisbury? The conjectures started coming in yesterday morning. Robin Griffith, who lives outside Houston, Texas, said the New Hampshire fireball was similar to a flash of light she saw from her deck back in July. "If it had streaked I would have thought it was a shooting star," she said. But she added that her siting was exactly the same - she didn't see her ball of light fall to the horizon. "I don't believe mine was what y'all had," she said. She gave the name of a scientist in Russia who had studied her incident. Andrei Ol'khovatov had read the posting on CCNet and had asked her to get more information about the New Hampshire incident. Ol'khovatov had his own opinion. "It was probably not a meteorite," he wrote in an e-mail, "but a geophysical meteor (high-speed ball lightning). I investigate these events for some years." Ol'khovatov's Web page has scores of information about incidents of geographic meteors, what he describes as a rare type of electric atmospheric discharge like ball lightning. He suggests TWA Flight 800 and other airline disasters may have been caused by this natural phenomena. Salisbury's fire could be just the latest incident. Richard Spalding, a senior engineer at the Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, a U.S. Department of Energy national security lab, had his own theory. Apart from the lab, Spalding has studied flashes in the atmosphere - of which meteors are one sort and lightning another. "This particular article is reminiscent of quite a number of events I've looked into in which people claim they've seen a fireball come all the way to the ground," he said. "I think they are an electrical manifestation - akin to lightning but with nothing to do with thunderstorms." Spalding said evidence of this sort of event could be gained by analyzing some leftover material at the site. "It's quite possible there are some radioactive trace elements that are formed by the ions," he said. The Ayoubs, he said, agreed to send him some ground samples. "If found, there's no mistaking something very strange had occurred. There's only one way those elements could be created. It requires high energy radiation." Scientists conjecturing on the Salisbury mystery got more information from residents yesterday as more people came forward with reports of seeing the fireball.

[CTRL] Dubya's Fave Supremo
Who will play daddy? Anyone hoping the Supreme Court would step in and be the "grown-up" got a rude awakening from Justice Antonin Scalia. - - - - - - - - - - - - By Joan Walsh Dec. 11, 2000 | He's George W. Bush's favorite Supreme Court justice -- though W. calls him "Anthony Scalia," obligingly Anglicizing his foreign-sounding first name. On Saturday, Justice Antonin Scalia showed us why with his aggressive, unusual statement defending the court's 5-4 decision to halt the manual recount underway in Florida while the high court considered Bush's appeal. Bush needed to prove he'd suffer "irreparable harm" if the court didn't act immediately to stop the hand counts, and against all predictions, a majority of the justices agreed that he would. Such decisions don't usually come with an opinion, but Scalia felt compelled to explain his reasoning anyway, in response to a strong dissent from Justice John Paul Stevens. "Count first, and rule upon legality afterwards, is not a recipe for producing election results that have the public acceptance democratic stability requires," he intoned. Of course, act first and listen to the legal arguments afterward is not exactly a recipe for producing a Supreme Court ruling the public will trust, either. It's clear there is no recipe for selecting a president out of this unprecedented mess that partisans on both sides will embrace. But public trust is most severely threatened by the court's foray into politics, this time on the side of Bush. Twice in two days, two different Supreme Courts did exactly what the experts predicted they wouldn't. Friday, Florida's high court reversed Circuit Court Judge N. Sanders Sauls' decision rejecting Vice President Al Gore's election contest, and delivered up the innovative (not usually a compliment, in legal terms) solution of a statewide manual recount of so-called undervotes -- ballots that didn't show a vote for president, or at least not one that could be perceived by a machine count. Then Saturday, the U.S. Supreme Court abruptly halted the recount, after an array of experts insisted that though the court might ultimately rule for Bush, a majority of justices would be hard put to find he'd suffer "irreparable harm" if the recount continued. The two surprise verdicts prove the uncertainty of the legal terrain we're on in this election, of course, but they also show that the hotly disputed facts in the case can't be viewed with a lens utterly clear of politics. Clearly the "election results" Scalia is most worried about are manual recounts that could taint a Bush victory, and that's precisely what's still in dispute. With our desire for Supreme Court salvation, we're a little like W. as parodied by "Saturday Night Live," frantically clamoring for the "grown-ups" to intervene. "Who's gonna play daddy?" Chris Matthews shouted on "Hardball" two weeks ago, before the first U.S. Supreme Court hearing. The sexism of the question bothered me less than the naive yearning for protection, for someone to come in and break up our childish and irrational national brawl. In fact, Scalia's tough statement should remind those seeking a "daddy" that while most daddies are wise, some are capricious bullies. There can be no rescue from on high. The increasing partisanship of the past two decades has of course reached the high court. Scalia, though a justice, is only human. Media reports have described him as "depressed" and anxious to retire, though he's only 64, because he's bitter that he has not been able to forge an impregnable conservative majority on the court. A Gore victory, of course, dooms him to an additional four years at least, since the Democrat would get to appoint his replacement if he retires. Meanwhile, left-wing court watchers are apoplectic because Scalia's son Eugene is a partner in the same law firm as Theodore Olson, who is arguing Bush's case before Scalia's court. Olson has defended the Republican Party's most indefensible causes -- from Iran-Contra through impeachment. The observers demand that Scalia recuse himself from the case, almost unheard of on the court and not about to happen here. But is Scalia's son working for Olson's firm any more worrisome than having a Bush family factotum, Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris, certify his Florida election victory -- or having his brother ready to preside over the Florida Legislature's usurpation of power when they name a Bush slate of electors this week? Maybe most disturbing about the Supreme Court's stay is that it delivered us into what one wag called "court-imposed ignorance." We were within 24 hours of knowing who won the hand count, which by all reports was proceeding rapidly. And ironically, it's possible the recount could have widened Bush's lead. But we were probably going to learn what we already know: that Bush and Gore finished almost dead even, in a statistical tie. Even if Gore moved ahead on the hand count, his lead was likely to be as slim as Bush's, well

Joshua2 = Dec. 11, 2000 Texas win$ A-Rod sweepstakes; slugger agrees to $252M deal By Scott Miller SportsLine.com Senior Writer DALLAS -- Alex Rodriguez will be in a Texas Rangers uniform next season. Rodriguez's agent Scott Boras has a Monday afternoon meeting scheduled with Rangers officials to finalize the deal, which is a 10-year, $252 million contract. The Rangers have a 7 p.m. ET news conference scheduled to announce the mammoth deal with the slugging shortstop. In the hunt to the end, a Mariners source told SportsLine.com Monday morning, "It's over." Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez, who appears poised to return to Cleveland, dominated the industry buzz on a day that saw several second-tier free agents sign. Boston and the New York Mets remain involved with Ramirez, according to sources, but Ramirez has made it clear that he wishes to return to Cleveland if the Indians are in the ballpark of the other offers. Agent Jeff Moorad said Sunday it will take an eight-year offer to sign Ramirez, who could agree to terms as early as Monday. Short hops The Darren Dreifort deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers -- five years at $55 million -- is expected to be announced Monday. The Dodgers, who already have signed free agent pitcher Andy Ashby this winter, will open the season with a rotation of Kevin Brown, Ashby, Dreifort, Chan Ho Park and, most likely, Eric Gagne. Dreifort, 28, went 12-9 with a 4.16 ERA for the Dodgers in 2000. His career record is 39-45. It's been slow going for trades at the winter meetings, but Detroit and Houston could solve that. The Tigers and Astros are discussing a six-player swap, a source told SportsLine.com, that would send right-handed pitcher Chris Holt, catcher Mitch Meluskey and outfielder Roger Cedeno to the Tigers for catcher Brad Ausmus, pitcher Doug Brocail and a minor leaguer to be named. The source placed the odds of the deal happening at "50-50'' late Sunday afternoon. Among other things, Ausmus has a no-trade clause that he would have to waive. It's no surprise, though, that the Astros would be eager to deal away Meluskey. He and Matt Mieske got into a fistfight behind the cage during batting practice before a Sunday afternoon game in San Diego at mid-season, and Meluskey is disliked by several in the Astros clubhouse. Montreal pitcher Dustin Hermanson is said to remain available, with Toronto and Boston among the interested teams. Hermanson, who served as both a starter and a closer for the Expos in 2000, is available because -- why else? -- he's too expensive for Montreal. He's scheduled to make $5.3 million in 2001, $5.7 million in 2002 and the club holds a $7.5 million option on him for 2003. Hermanson went 12-14 with four saves and a 4.77 ERA for the Expos in 2000. Don't be surprised if free agent catcher Tom Prince winds up in Minnesota. A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. Re: [CTRL] Dangers of the New Age movement
-Caveat Lector- This is an excellent site for those who know nothing about the dangers to our society coming from the New Age movement and those who wish to learn more about this very extensive topic. Hannah Newman, a Jewish researcher who lives in Israel, recently sent out a notice about her site as follows: "My new, greatly expanded and updated research on New Age antisemitism is now on line. Go to: http://homestead.virtualjerusalem.com/antisemitism/index.html" This is some of the most unbelievable crap I have ever read. This is on a par with the 2 + 2 = 5 Jewish Conspiracy theories out there, except now we are expected to believe that the 'new age movement' is a coherent, organised plan. I feel qualified to comment here, as I helped push the new age movement in Australia. I am not anti-semitic, anti-jewish, or anti-anything. I believed that the Christian option was lacking, and I wanted to explore yoga, meditation and other philosophies. This bimbo is expecting us to believe that virtually all non-mainstream religions are part of a sinister plan to wipe out Jews. Talk about paranoid - it would be funny if it weren't so scary that people out there believe such drivel. I put to you all that this woman is part of an evil plan to isolate and vilify anyone not part of an 'established' religion. Established religions control their followers via their belief systems, but the rest of us are now 'new agers', to be isolated and vilified for our crime of not 'belonging' to a major belief system. I have been to Findhorn Community, I have lived on communes, I have organised festivals and activities, conferences, and published magazines, all promoting peaceful ideology via diet, attitude and environment. I KNOW the new age movement. It is totally disorganised, incoherent, and until Shirley Maclaine and Oprah Winfrey came along, it was lacking in credibility and viability. There are certainly sinister elements that come along and wave their flag under the new age movement's banner. In a world facing fragmentation and uncertainty, the last thing we need is more rubbish of this calibre. Hannah, there is no Jewish conspiracy to wipe out non-Jews, and there is no New Age conspiracy to wipe out Jews. You should go out and smell the roses and get a life! Duncan Duncan M. [CTRL] Wakenhut runs Australian Concentration Camps
-Caveat Lector- Just in the process of updating http://leviathan.weblogs.com And I thought this article might interest listreaders: http://www.smh.com.au/news/0012/12/pageone/pageone7.html The more punishment the better to fill George Wackenhut's coffers A reclusive American millionaire is the man behind the company accused of covering up abuses of detainees at Australia's migrant detention centres. Bernard Lagan reports. George C. Wackenhut, a Florida-based former FBI agent, has built a business behind bars that makes him $US400 million a year. In his Sydney outpost, a four-times-daily ritual helps protect his profits. At 8am each day, the 400 people in the Villawood detention centre for illegal migrants line up for about 30 minutes before the guards employed by the local subsidiary of the Wackenhut Corporation, the world's largest private jail operator. They carry their photo identification passes, and wait to be counted. Before they go to sleep at night, in what even the Department of Immigration has conceded are overcrowded and inadequate conditions, the muster will be repeated three times. Escapes from Villawood cost Mr Wackenhut's local, wholly owned subsidiary, Australasian Correctional Management (ACM), thousands of dollars in penalties to the Government, which has contracted the company to run Australia's six detention centres where around 3,500 illegal migrants are kept. That includes the Woomera detention centre, in the South Australian desert, lately the subject of widespread criticism because of the treatment of inmates. The number of daily musters, recently increased at Villawood, can - as the Australian Human Rights Commissioner has pointed out in a report to Parliament - be traced to ACM's need to preserve its profits. ACM's charges are, in official parlance, non-citizens - people locked away because they have illegally entered Australia, mostly by boat, or who have overstayed their visas. Yet they are also a source of cheap labour for ACM and its subcontractors who employ detainees to work in detention centre kitchens and clean toilets. Where else would people work 12 hours a week in return for a $15 or $20 phone card - the going rate for detainees, including those at Villawood? Those who work in NSW prison industries are paid up to $75 a week. George C. Wackenhut now has some 40,000 prisoners and illegal migrants in his companies' charge in the US, Europe and beyond, including about 5,000 in Australia, if the three private prisons ACM runs are included. Villawood is being expanded to lift the detainee population from 500 to 650. Woomera is being expanded to cater for up to 2,000. Wackenhut will profit from the extra numbers so long as ACM retains its contract when it comes up for renewal next year. Wackenhut is a great believer in incarceration. He said in a documentary screened on SBS in October: "They're [Australia] really starting to punish people, as they should have all along." He added: "This year we are going to make $US400 million." Re: [CTRL] Wakenhut runs Australian Concentration Camps
-Caveat Lector- PROTECTION: PAY YOUR MONEY, TAKE YOUR CHANCE We are a nation of shirkers. We collectively shirk our responsibility to protect and care for each other. We have no ligitimate excuse. We have reaped the consequences. The public trust has been ravaged by unspeakable government misfeasance. Scandal is the civic norm. We, in our naive folly, increasingly opt for the "lesser evil." Sometimes, that's exactly what we get. Privatization of public responsibility metastasizes through out society. Reliance on government contracts has so ravaged the private sector that no employee feels secure. Public reliance on government protection has so corrupted society that we can no longer depend on each other for even common courtesy, let alone mutual aid. Mass media mind control more or less sucessfully shifts the blame for our mutual socio-pathology onto relatively defenseless scapegoats. We suffer ever more greatly as these trends feed on each other, and on us. We who refuse to care for each other have been bankrupted and left to die by an avaricious and uncaring medical system. We who refuse to clean up after ourselves are choking on each other's fumes. We who refuse to teach each other are dragged back from an otherwise promising future by the collective ignorance that our education system so lovingly nurtures. We who refuse to protect each other are at the mercy of a legal system whose very business is crime. And a lucrative business it is. By this point in history, all but the most naive of us have stopped expecting cops, public or private, to all behave like Boy Scouts. There has been simply too much evidence to the contrary. In the gray and murky zone where law enforcement overlaps with organized crime, an underground empire has arisen. It is a world where the so-called "War on Drugs" is often a war on rival drug dealers, and always a war on the poor. It is a world where "National Security," excuses war crimes and genocide is a salable commodity. It is a world where justice is for sale and cops are for rent. A family business, Wackenhut Corp., was founded by one time FBI man George R. Wackenhut, in 1954. His son Richard, a Citadel graduate, is president and CEO. The immediate family hold over 50% of the stock The rest is divided among just 1100 stockholders. Wackenhut stock is traded on the New York Stock exchange. Buy a share, and you will receive a fascinating brochure. The company's revenue has grown from just $300,000 in 1958 to nearly half a billion today. It is one of the largest private security firms in existence. Wackenhut specializes in security contracts. Government contracts are best, of course, and the company's remarkable growth is due on no small part to George Wackenhut's relationship to certain government officials. His first big break came when he secured a contract to watch over Titan missile sites in four states. Since then, security and public safety functions have proven a lucrative focus. Wackenhut provides security guards for such high-risk installations as the trans-Alaska pipelines, major airports both in the United States and abroad, dams and the nuclear test site in Nevada. It also owns a casualty reinsurance firm, a travel service, and an airline services company. The Department of energy provides 25% of Wackenhut's total gross. Their operatives also serve friends of the U. S. Govt. and Big Oil (like the fugitive Shah of Iran), abroad as well as at home. Wackenhut personnel guard the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve Sites in Louisiana and Texas. From time to time, they can be seen around the complexes, dodging alligators, and exchanging laser gunfire with soldiers, local police and sheriff's deputies. This is just practice to prepare for real trouble, such as terrorists. Wackenhut touts it's supposed anti-terrorist expertise. James P. Davis, who manages the site for government contractor Boeing, declares: "I pity anybody who tries to invade here. It would be tougher than Fort Knox." That is arguable. The government itself concedes that the security could be beefed up. But the analogy to Fort Knox is fitting. There is gold here, too, only it's black. Always remember the Golden Rule: "Gold rules." Wackenhut often recruits ex-police and military men who don'trequire a fresh background check. Cutting this corner (at $30,000 to $40,000 apiece) has allowed the employment of a number of unsavory characters, including infamous navy spy John Walker. Therein lies a tale or few. When Wackenhut operatives were caught recently in the public spotlight by court allegations of illegal surveillance, Associated Press reports that they were staunchly defended by their employer in the case, the president of Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., James B. Hermiller. Alyeska is a consortium of seven oil companies including Exxon Corp. owners of the Exxon Valdez. They are also long time Wackenhut clients. During the spill, industry security mounted an armed "bear patrol" to "keep grizzlies

The experts believe particles from passing comets entered the Earth's atmosphere, bringing with them micro-bacteria. Cows then became infected by eating the bacteria lying on grass in the fields. Yeah and pigs fly! For those who are seriously interested in Mad Cow Disease and its history, get a copy of "Deadly Feasts" by Richard Rhodes. It is a brilliant book outlining the history of MCD/BSE/CJD starting with cannabilism amongst New Guinea highlanders, and their resulting kuru kuru. Basically the reader realises that cannabilism is linked with this epidemic, and that the situation is likely to get worse due to the 20-30 year incubation period of the disease. -Caveat Lector- Amen Duncan! I could really "go off" on this one but I've seen too many narrow minded people here in the 3-4 years I've been on this list and don't care to engage in any debate here. There's no question though...this broad has some serious toys in her head! Great Magazine!!! Not subscribed anymore but never fail to pick one up while I'm at Barnes Noble. -Original Message- From: Conspiracy Theory Research List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of nexusmagazine Sent: Monday, December 11, 2000 5:51 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [CTRL] Dangers of the New Age movement -Caveat Lector- This is an excellent site for those who know nothing about the dangers to our society coming from the New Age movement and those who wish to learn more about this very extensive topic. Sunday, April 30, 2000 BALDWIN -- A former kitchen worker at the Michigan Youth Correctional Facility is under investigation by state police for allegedly having sex with at least one young inmate. Detective Sgt. George Pratt, of the Reed City post, said he is investigating allegations against the woman, who no longer works at the prison. He refused to provide details, including how many inmates allegedly were involved. The 33-year-old woman was one of the original employees of the prison when it opened in July, said Warden Dave Trippett. He said she left in December. "She resigned from us before we would have dismissed her," he said. Trippett said he's aware of allegations of sexual misconduct with one teen-age inmate. A prison employee who has consensual sex with an inmate can be charged with fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, a high misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of two years in prison. Trippett said the investigation was dropped at first. "I think the prisoner said something after he left here. That's why the Michigan State Police picked it up again," he said. Guards and former guards told The Press the allegations involved two inmates. Former guard Stephanie Striker said she was ordered to search cells in her pod for tobacco before she quit in October. A lieutenant told her they were investigating allegations that a kitchen worker was trading tobacco for sexual favors, she said. She said she found tobacco four or five times in cells, mostly in a cell shared by two prisoners who worked in the kitchen. Neither Pratt nor the warden said they were aware of the allegations involving tobacco, which is not allowed in the prison. Prison operator hit with abuse charges, violence at other sites. Sunday, April 30, 2000 A month after Wackenhut Corrections Corp. of Florida opened Michigan's first private prison, the Michigan Youth Correctional Facility near Bald-win, riots were breaking out at one of its prisons in New Mexico. On Aug. 31, nearly 300 inmates rioted at the Guadalupe County Correctional Facility in Santa Rosa, N.M., leading to the stabbing death of a rookie guard. It took more than 100 officers from across New Mexico to quell the violence. Former FBI agent George Wackenhut founded Wackenhut Corp. in 1954 in Miami as a private investigation service. He launched Wackenhut Corrections in 1984, at a time when prison crowding was forcing states to release inmates early. The company, now based in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., is the nation's second-largest private prison operator, behind Corrections Corp. of America. Its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol WHC. Wackenhut has 33 prisons in the United States and six more abroad, more than 38,000 beds and 8,000 employees. Those prisons helped the company earn nearly $22 million in profits last year. But the profits come with a cost: -- In New Mexico, about a week before the riot, an inmate at the same prison was watching television when he was beaten to death with a laundry bag full of rocks. Three inmates have been stabbed to death since late 1998 at the company's other prison in New Mexico. Wackenhut blamed the violence on flaws in the state's prison system, including the way it sends violent, maximum-security prisoners into Wackenhut's medium-security prisons. Also in New Mexico, a class-action lawsuit filed against Wackenhut claims mentally ill inmates have been gassed, beaten and, in one case, marched naked down public hallways in the company's prisons in Hobbs and Santa Rosa. The state corrections secretary called allegations in the lawsuit a "complete exaggeration." -- In Texas, a grand jury in December indicted a dozen former Wackenhut employees at the Travis County Community Justice Center prison in East Austin on charges ranging from rape to sexual harassment of 16 female inmates. By that time, the state had removed the prison's 106 female inmates, taken over the prison from Wackenhut and cracked down on the smuggling of contraband. A former guard at the East Austin prison filed a federal lawsuit in September, claiming he was fired for ordering an employee to videotape abuse of an inmate by a guard. -- In Louisiana, a U.S. Department of Justice report released in February found that guards at Wackenhut's Jena Juvenile Justice Center near New Orleans habitually used excessive force and abused,

[CTRL] IRS agents trail crooks on mean streets
-Caveat Lector- IRS agents trail crooks on mean streets http://www.dispatch.com:80/news/newsfea00/dec00/519694.html Tuesday, December 5, 2000 Robert Ruth Dispatch Staff Reporter Fourteen Internal Revenue Service investigators in Columbus eschew the accountant stereotype. These agents in the Columbus IRS office's criminal investigation division carry guns and often go undercover. Like other IRS employees, they have accounting or finance backgrounds. But unlike most of their desk- bound colleagues, criminal division agents do much of their work outside the office. Recent investigations have taken them into the mean streets of Columbus following drug dealers, into seedy bars looking for crooked tavern owners, into betting parlors searching for bookmakers and into the halls of government ferreting out corrupt public officials. IRS investigators even donned overalls and picked up shovels during the investigation of a major central Ohio marijuana smuggler, recalled Ross Brown, spokesman for the division's Columbus office. Shovels were needed in 1994 to dig up the Morrow County yard of Duane Asher in Mount Gilead. He had buried much of his profits in canisters around his house. In July 1994, Asher was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to one count each of money laundering and drug trafficking. He also agreed to forfeit to the government $386,000 in cash and property he had amassed through his trafficking activities. After 28 years with the IRS, little surprises Brown, 53. "But it never entered my mind that one day I'd be digging for buried treasure," he said. "They don't put that on the IRS recruiting posters." The IRS criminal investigation division offices throughout the country are in charge of catching not only tax cheats but also money- launderers. And the money-laundering assignment means IRS agents end up looking at crimes involving significant amounts of money, such as drug trafficking, embezzlements, arsons and investment frauds. "We're not much different from other federal law-enforcement agencies," said Cromwell Handy, chief of the division's regional office in Cincinnati. "We make arrests, fill out search warrants and conduct surveillances and raids. The only difference is, we're accountants by nature. We focus on the money." IRS investigators often work with other agencies, including the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Columbus Police Division and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. "We're usually overshadowed by other agencies," Handy acknowledged. Although the division receives little publicity, the prowess of its investigators is well known, and appreciated, within the law- enforcement community. "They're able to help us find things, like hidden assets, that the average deputy is not trained to find," said Franklin County Sheriff Jim Karnes. "Their expertise is needed on all sorts of investigations." U.S. Attorney Sharon J. Zealey, whose office prosecutes IRS cases, is another fan. "They follow the money," she said. "They're like bloodhounds." They also don't mind their low profile, she said. IRS investigators "don't engage in turf battles. They don't have fragile egos," Zealey said. The agents have worked behind the scenes in a number of major cases during the past five years: An investigation of corruption in eastern Ohio resulted in guilty pleas during the past two years from a Steubenville landfill owner, three environmental regulators, the son of one of the regulators and a Statehouse lobbyist. Most of the probe centered on kickbacks paid to regulators in exchange for landfill dumping permits. Albert J. DeSantis, a former millionaire developer, was convicted twice in 1996 and 1998 of investment fraud and once in 1999 of bankruptcy fraud. DeSantis once owned more private property in the Ohio State University area than anyone else. Mark Lewis of Gahanna and 10 associates were convicted last year of operating a multimillion-dollar-a-year bookmaking network that had ties to Las Vegas and cities in Pennsylvania. Frank Stavroff, Franz Schwarzbach, Robert Hetzel and Steve Dosky, four business partners, were convicted in 1997 of skimming cash from Columbus nightclubs they once owned. Robert W. Hill, a member of the family that owns Scioto Downs and Hill Distributors, and 18 associates were convicted in 1995 of operating a ring that smuggled 3 tons of marijuana, hidden in vans, to Columbus from Arizona over a five-year period. The Seawell brothers, Gary, Mark and Duanelined up more than 50 couriers who smuggled cocaine into Columbus from Mexico in the soles of tennis shoes. Although most of their confederates were captured and convicted in 1997 and 1998, the Seawells, all natives of Belize in Central America, remain fugitives. Dr. Fred O. Sakamoto of Lewis Center in Delaware County, a periodontist who operates three gum-disease clinics in Columbus, was convicted this year for failing to pay taxes on $246,499 in income in 1993. Highly recommended to get a handle on the situation. regards Duncan H ... then its a good thing I followed the Bible, as per Genesis 1:29 "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat" ... and became a Vegetarian. [CTRL] Justice Scalia's Legal Vision is Blinded by his Ambition
-Caveat Lector- --- Forwarded message follows --- Date sent: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 21:41:05 -0800 From: "eWarrior (Kurt Jonach)" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:Justice Scalia's Legal Vision is Blinded by his Ambition To: Steve Wingate [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.nydailynews.com/2000-12-11/News_and_Views/Beyond_the_City/a-91901.asp JUSTICE SCALIA'S LEGAL VISION IS BLINDED BY HIS AMBITION New York Daily News Online December 11, 2000 Justice Scalia's Legal Vision Is Blinded by His Ambition Jim Dwyer Earlier this year, Antonin Scalia, the Supreme Court justice who now is all but serving as the attorney for George W. Bush, let it be known that if Democrats won the presidency, he'd quit the court. He would leave because under a Democratic administration, he would have no shot at being named chief justice by Al Gore, according to the March issue of the Washingtonian magazine. Now, Scalia has taken charge of the election case for George W. Bush and will try to herd the conservatives this morning for the result he apparently wants: a Bush presidency, and, perhaps, the job of chief justice when William Rehnquist retires in a few years as is expected. Normally, judges disqualify themselves from cases in which they have a personal interest; if the naked ambition to be the court's chief was accurately attributed to him, then he has no business deciding this fight. Scalia, however, could not have been bolder in his advocacy for Bush's cause, and, by extension, his own. During oral arguments two weeks ago, he took shots at the Florida courts, which had said the most fundamental right in a democracy is the vote. No way, Scalia said. "There is no right of suffrage under Article II," he declared. In plain English, he said that the citizens have no constitutional right to vote for President. His reason is that the Constitution places that power in the hands of the state legislatures, although he did not mention that all 50 state legislatures submit the question to a popular vote. (Some transcripts of the Supreme Court session attributed this remark to Rehnquist, but Scalia apparently was the actual speaker.) Over the weekend, he took matters even further. Scalia wrote that Bush would suffer "irreparable harm" if votes were counted "by casting a cloud upon what he claims to be the legitimacy of his election." You have may seen that moment in "A Few Good Men" when Tom Cruise is defending a soldier at a military trial. "I want the truth!" says Cruise, during cross-examination. Jack Nicholson looks up at him with contempt. "You can't handle the truth," snarls Nicholson. The legality of the votes worries Scalia."Count first and rule upon legality afterward is not a recipe for producing election results that have the public acceptance democratic stability requires," Scalia wrote. We've gotten by for two centuries on precisely that recipe. That is what is done on every Election Day in this country. First we vote. Then come the challenges, if any, which end up in court, and are decided there. This is not new. To have disputed ballots decided by courts doesn't "change the rules of the game." Those are the rules of the game. To do otherwise changes the law, the customs and the practice in every single state. No one can possibly argue that it is the best interests of Bush or Gore that the votes not be counted. There was talk yesterday -- unfortunately, it proved to be untrue -- that the Florida courts were going to ship uncounted ballots up to Washington. Those ballots, for better and worse, are the only evidence about the results of this election. To exclude them from this decision is like saying that a murder weapon seized from a suspect can't be shown to a jury because of a legal technicality. But Scalia says that we -- the nation -- can't handle the truth of counting those ballots, that the results might damage a Bush presidency if they show that he really didn't win. So we hide the facts for the good of the country. Or is it really for the good of Antonin Scalia, the chief justice wanna-be? --- End of forwarded message --- }}} ANOMALOUS RADIO {{{ - Techno, Ambient, Talk (33k+) http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=anomalous }}} RADIO ANOMALY {{{ - Techno, Ambient, Jazz (Cable, DSL) http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=stevew168 Anomalous Images and UFO Files http://www.anomalous-images.com A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. [CTRL] NY Times - Opinion: To Any Lengths
-Caveat Lector- --- Forwarded message follows --- Date sent: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 21:51:15 -0800 From: "eWarrior (Kurt Jonach)" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:NY Times - Opinion: To Any Lengths To: Steve Wingate [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.nytimes.com/2000/12/11/opinion/11HERB.html TO ANY LENGTHS New York Times Online (Opinion) December 11, 2000 To Any Lengths By Bob Herbert And so the Supreme Court intervened, not with wisdom and grace but with a clumsily wielded hammer, to protect the interests of George W. Bush and the Republicans by thwarting any further movement in the Florida vote toward Al Gore. Mr. Bush and his party have made it clear to the country and the world that their greatest fear -- the scenario they dread above all others -- is that somehow, someway, all of the votes legally cast in Florida would actually be counted. They have demonstrated their willingness to go to almost any lengths to prevent that from happening. And that resolve was given the unfortunate imprimatur of the nation's highest court on Saturday when, in a 5-to-4 decision, the court ordered the hand recounts in Florida to stop. But the Bush team's appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, which will hear oral arguments this morning, is just one prong of the G.O.P.'s dangerous assault on the spirit of democracy that has served this nation so well for so long. The truth is that while Mr. Bush and the Republicans will be more than happy to accept a final Supreme Court ruling in their favor, they are already prepared to take extraordinary steps to circumvent a ruling that goes against them. In short, they are not willing to accept any set of circumstances that would result in Al Gore winning the White House. Former Secretary of State James Baker was asked on "Meet the Press" yesterday if the Bush campaign would accept the results of a recount in Florida if, after hearing the arguments today, the Supreme Court ordered the recount to resume. Mr. Baker told the moderator, Tim Russert, "Of course we'll begin the recount again if that's the ruling of the United States Supreme Court." Mr. Russert said, "And will you abide by the result?" Mr. Baker, clearly uncomfortable with the question, said: "Well, I'm not sure I understand what you mean, `Will we abide by the result?' The result will be there." Mr. Baker knows as well as anyone that the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature is poised to trash any semblance of justice and fair play by designating its own slate of 25 presidential electors committed to Mr. Bush if, under any scenario, Al Gore wins the popular vote in Florida. Mr. Baker said of the Legislature, "They have an interest here that is a constitutional interest granted to them under Article 2 of the Constitution, and it is not up to me or anybody else to rule that out or rule it in." Mr. Russert said: "But your campaign has been working in concert with them, giving them legal advice. Both sides admit it." "Uh, Tim, we may have indeed," said Mr. Baker. "Some of our people have been talking to them, there's no doubt about that, because it is a constitutional remedy set forth in Article 2 of the Constitution." In the eyes of the Republicans, the Supreme Court ruling is the final word only if it goes against Mr. Gore. The game is rigged. And the Democrats, who all along have been more willing than the Republicans to adhere to standards of fair play, are openly talking about folding their tents and conceding the White House to Mr. Bush. American democracy suffered a grievous wound this year in Florida. The conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court that has ranted ad nauseam about activist courts and the infringement of states' rights turned its own philosophy on its head by rushing in on Saturday and gratuitously stopping a recount of votes legally cast by American citizens. It is not unreasonable to believe that had those votes been counted, Al Gore, who won the popular vote nationwide, would also have won Florida and a majority in the Electoral College. A former colleague of mine called yesterday and said: "All the Supreme Court of Florida wanted to do was have the vote counted. What was so wrong with that?" The good news, of course, is that American-style democracy is resilient enough to rebound from the Florida fiasco. Eventually the full truth will emerge about the extent to which the voices of voters in Florida went unheard. And the role of the U.S. Supreme Court and the Republican Party in silencing those voters will be a matter of public and historical record. - end -- --- End of forwarded message --- }}} ANOMALOUS RADIO {{{ - Techno, Ambient, Talk (33k+) http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=anomalous }}} RADIO

[CTRL] Dangers of the New Age movement
-Caveat Lector- Duncan of Nexusthanks for letting us know of your New Age connection. It certainly fits in with your pushing of Icke with his vicious antisemitism and the rest of your rag which sells in New Age bookstores as well as to militia people. How wrong you are, and how brainless! Icke and NEXUS are NOT friends, in case you ever bothered to do any research. I see however that regurgitation of crap is more your line. You obviously have never bothered to read NEXUS, because if you had, you would have kept your silly mouth shut, instead of proving to everyone what a idiot you are! For the record: I am not "new age", I am not "right wing", I am not "left wing", I am not anti semitic or anti Jewish. Why in the word would anyone take your word that New Age is not organized? Because you publish disinformation in your magazine to get those who are trying to learn what is going on running in seventeen different directions, all of which lead to dead ends? By the way, read more carefully. I'm not Hannah. I was just telling others of her site. You may as well be Hannah - you are just as deluded. Why don't you visit our website and see what a bimbo you are proving to be. Until now, I thought radical, right-wing, fundamentalist christians were the only 'anti new age' idiots out there. You know the type, the ones that say that acupuncture is the work of the devil. Oh but now, acupuncturists are part of a diabolical scheme to kill off the jews. Give me and the rest of this list a break. Get it straight: There is no Christian plot to take over the world and kill off non-believers. They are too disorganised, fragmented and at war with each other. There is no Jewish plot to take over the world and kill off gentiles. They are too paranoid that everyone else is after them, as well as being too occupied killing off their brethren, the Arabs. There is no new age plot to take over the world and kill off Jews. The new age movement is too full of its own crap, egos, and money to be coherent enough to organise anything. The people to be worried about are idiots like yourself and Hannah, who are just into glorifying their own names and agendas. Pity you don't bother to do any checking or research. Now how about you and Hannah call the night nurse - your medication needs topping up! Sheesh! Duncan Duncan M. Re: [CTRL] Dangers of the New Age movement
-Caveat Lector- LMAO!!! This is too funny!!!Anyone that reads that pile of shit "Nexus" is just as loony as its fruit-loop "editor"! Still in stitches over this set-up piece of schlock self-promotion! Hahahahahaha!!! So am I to assume you know what you are talking about? You have obviously read some of the magazine and have an intelligent comment to make? If so, maybe you would like to air any valid concerns or rational criticism either personally to my email address, or maybe you would like to show what an idiot you truly are to everyone and debate publicly. You should obviously have no problems arguing with myself, the 'fruit loop' editor and owner of NEXUS Magazine should you? After you have stopped laughing at your own stupidity, email something sensible to discuss. Duncan Duncan M. Re: [CTRL] Dangers of the New Age movement
-Caveat Lector- And thankyou by "This," we assume you mean YOUR own rediculous "drivel" and poop over "Nexus". It doesn't take a genuis to figure that the so-called "spirituality" of the NAM is Nazism to the core, which a multitude of fruitcakes taken along for the ride. http://www.cuttingedge.org/news/n1004.html http://www.cuttingedge.org/news/n1048.html "Hidden Dangers of the Rainbow : The New Age Movement and Our Coming Age of Barbarism" http://www.cuttingedge.org/review/rv105.html So I gather that Guitar Virtuoso is a radical fundamentalist christian living in Australia. The 'new age' movement isn't neo-nazi, the fundamentalist christians are. Go get a mirror pal and have a good hard look. Then go get a brain and learn to think for yourself. The "Hidden Dangers of the Rainbow" is chock a block full of facts like 2+2=5. Yet these are the sort of facts that fundamentalists like yourself and Hannah use as 'evidence' that the new age movement are trying to kill off all jews. You would be funny if you weren't so deluded and dangerous. It seems that anyone not part of an established religion is by default part of the 'new age' movement. Your extremist pals in the USA go around telling us that vegetarians are satanists, that chiropractors are doing the work of the devil etc. Now your friends on this list would have us believe that anyone who meditates or wants peace and goodwill for all is part of an anti-jewish plot. At least the track record of the new age movement (assuming there even is one) is not like the track record of religions like yours. Your religious brothers are killing each other, and others who do not agree with them. Ever heard of a new ager who killed off thousands of others just because they disagreed? Established religions are for sheep who cannot think for themselves. Their track record of corruption, bloodshed, lies, deceptions and hypocrisy are clear for all to judge them by. And for the record you brainless twerp, I do not even like the 'new age' movement. I deplore the rampant egos, profiteering, lies, and hypocrisy amongst all the groups and organisations.
