Is that because I'm running an appimage?

I also use the appimage from the github page - but cannot reproduce what you

I get the full list of cameras and also lenses - including the latest

So

Or is there some other reason that that would be happening?

Perhaps not all that many hacks.

You'll need GCC-12 (or newer?), and tell your build system to use it, and you
may have to disable some optional parts.

e.g. on OpenSUSe I needed to tell the system to use GCC-12
("export CC=gcc-12; export CXX=g++-12),
and I removed openEXR (which I don't use, so removing it was easier than
trying to get the proper version...)
In case of such problems, have a look at the DefineOptions.cmake file, to see
what could be disabled.

Of course, if you can't get a proper version for a *required* component, it
gets more difficult...

Remco

depends on the viewpoint - aka base knowledge.
I tried to build master 2 months ago - and learned I have do upgrade my debian.
I did that - then I learned I have to do this and that recommended in pixls.us,
github and here.
I tried but never succeeded. But I'm not a SW developer. I'm happy if my
scripts (where I don't have the necessity to compile) work for me.

So something like

tell the system to use GCC-12

is difficult (ok, you give two commands here - but: as a user? as root? And:
what are the side-affects?)

So I decided to wait till "normal compile" in a "standard system" will work
again.
Btw: using the "Testing" binary in "Debian Bookworm" (manual download) seems to
work in the meantime as a workaround.

Darktable is geared towards using the GPU whenever possible; the CPU is mostly
used for "bookkeeping".

While it might theoretically be possible to handle multiple images in
parallel, it wouldn't get you much (if anything): treating several images in
parallel on the GPU cannot be faster than treating them sequentially.
In addition, you'd need to have the RAM to deal with multiple images.

Hello,

Not exactly that.

So I did not get the summer update so far.
I would like to build dt myself, but not see it fall into my home directory, as
it always happens when I do it.
So, my question : how can I manage to install it as if it were done frome repo ?
I searched and could find with /wereis/ that it currently uses the following
directories :

    darktable: /usr/bin/darktable /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/darktable
/usr/libexec/darktable /usr/share/darktable /usr/share/man/man1/darktable.1.gz

You know these instructions?
https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable#building

It tells you to do this

mkdir build/
cd  build/
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/opt/darktable/ ..
make
sudo make install

with the prefix being the directory to install to ...
This works for me although I don't know much about all these things.

btw. I use `checkinstall` instead of `make install` to build a package (.deb in
my case) and then use the package manager (dpkg in Debian) to install/uninstall
the package.

Hello Bernhard,

So I might have done something weird when I tried this.
However, I notice that then the maintainer of the repository from which I
installed did follow the instructions, since dt appears in /usr/bin/darktable
instead of /opt/darktable/.
At this point, what would you advise me to do ? Backup my config and

 * unsinstall dt, erase everything related to it in the directories
above and build as described in github, or
 * use cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr/bin/darktable ..

What distro do you use? You write

the maintainer of the repo which I installed from seems not active anymore

There should be a package for most common distros here:
https://software.opensuse.org/package/darktable

I use /opt since I do like to try darktable master every now and then and want
to make sure this does not interfere with production darktable stable version
(which is installed to /usr/bin by package manager from repo above).

If you compile and this is the only version you want to use ... I'd think

I searched and could find with /wereis/ that it currently uses the following

/usr/libexec/darktable /usr/share/darktable /usr/share/man/man1/darktable.1.gz

You know these instructions?
https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable#building

It tells you to do this

mkdir build/
cd  build/
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/opt/darktable/ ..
make
sudo make install

with the prefix being the directory to install to ...
This works for me although I don't know much about all these things.

btw. I use `checkinstall` instead of `make install` to build a package (.deb in
my case) and then use the package manager (dpkg in Debian) to install/uninstall
the package.

If I want to work an image in GIMP and Darktable I use the open feature in GIMP
and being a RAW file it opens the image in DT. I do the necessary edits in DT
and then just shutdown DT and the image is moved automatically across to GIMP
as a 32 bit floating point file. I then edit the image in GIMP and export as
normal. The other way I use the two programs together is to edit in DT first,
export as a 16 bit tiff and then open the 16 bit tiff in GIMP.  I appreciate

Hi all,

Is there any way to open the folder in the collections panel where a image is located? I
mean something like right click on the thumbnail in lighttable and "go to
folder" which opens the folder view in collections and get me to the right folder.

My image workflow and organization is very folder centric (have hierarchical
folders for years and dates etc.). When I select images e.g. from tags, I would
then be able to jump to the folder containing a special image.
I know that I can double click on the filmroll in image information to jump to
the filmroll. But I didn't get used to filmrolls by now because its a flat list
without my folder hierarchy. The folder view gives me the option to go up one
level and see all images from all subfolders at once.

BTW: Has anyone an idea why dt doesn't use a main menu and context menues on the thumbnails? I
mean, the buttons in the "selected images" and "history stack" etc. panels
could also be located in a context menu...? And a couple of other things could be located in a main
menu... Just wondering...

Thanks in advance!

You can use the [exposure] module to do so, with the [black level correction]
slider. Use gingerly. I would use it with {clipping indication} toggled on, and
stop increasing when the blacks in the subject* start to indicate clipping.
I.e., that area is within 2% (by default, but adjustable), of being clipped, or
already clipped.

*What constitutes, “subject” of your image is entirely up to you.

Two different things going on here:
We have the file timestamps as handled by the different OSs. Those can change

We also have metadata timestamps, generated by the camera. Most of these
shouldn't change. And afaik, Exif metadata couldn't store timezone as a

I have a file from my D700 at the time and EXIF says
Date/Time Original      2010:09:20 09:04:24

Then I look at a file of my D850 EXIF data - this one says
Date/Time Original      2022:01:19 10:45:06
and for the D850 there is an entry:
Offset Time Original      +00:00
but this one isn't available in my D700 from 2010.
It still offers a menu option for time zone - as you said, this is *only* found

Time Zone      +01:00

So yes, different cameras from different "ages" have different capabilities ...

Hi there,

A few weeks ago we had a conversation about darktable on my Macbook Air (M1) not being able to
see (let alone import) photos from my external HDD that I had created on my Windows laptop. The tip was:
format it. The HDD is ntfs formatted so I bought and downloaded this license for ease of use and quickness:

The installation seems to be done correctly (I got this on screen message saying something like ‘All you
have to do now is restart your laptop and enjoy your ntfs files’).

What else can I do to make this work?

I didn’t download the latest version yet. Will it work on M1 Macs?
The installation notes say that Intel is required – can that be it? I can
hardly believe but I just needed to ask.

This is with exposure correction of -1EV

When I import the same image, but the RAW into darktable, I get the second

This clearly shows that “in the field” it’s often hard to do things right in

Hi Bertwin,
the scene referred workflow applies a counter adjustment to your
in-camera exposure value adjustment. If you look in the exposure module you
will see a box ticked by default for ' Compensate camera exposure'. This may be
the cause of your issue. I use exposure bracketing most of the time and DT will
open all my bracketed images looking the same rather than dark or light or
normal. I am not sure of the logic of this default behaviour as I usually want
to keep the exposure compensation from the camera.

If this problem doesn't solve the issue just move the exposure slider along a
little to get the look you want. DT takes a bit of learning but is worth the
effort to learn. I prefer it so much over other programs such as LR. Let me
know how you get along with this issue.

Hi,

When I import a  series of images straight from the camera (Nikon D850, Nikon
nef format) in Darktable (scene-referred workflow), the images invariably show
up as way too dark, as if they are underexposed. The histogram shows a big
unexposed part on the highlights. I am pretty sure though that when I took the
pictures the exposure is about right (according to the camera histogram). The
camera-generated jpg is also ok.
What can be the cause of this and what can I do about it?

The histogramm always is created from the jpg, not the RAW (nef in your case).
So the deviation between the RAW shown in darktable and  the JPG depends on

what is "FL". remember that almost all of the "picture control" camera

Just have a look at the manual page I referenced to ...
And yes, but we are disussing deviations between image AND histogramm between

Re: [darktable-user] Re: split of Crop and Rotate to "Crop", and, "Rotate and Perspective" in 3.8

2021-12-30 Thread Bernhard

Technically it's understandable that this is separated and grouped as is.
Neither crop nor flip/rotate do any recalculation of pixel values, they just
reorder them (rotate/flip) or throw some of them away (crop).

So as is: rotate freely (any angle) is technically the same as perspective
correction: you have to take every pixel and it's surrounding and recalculate
new values with rounding errors and interpolations and ...

Perhaps you may configure quick access group to your needs ...

Re: [darktable-user] The new import process

2021-12-04 Thread Bernhard

do you move the images to your RAID from within darktable?
Then the images or folders striked out should be accessible again by just
connecting your computer to that RAID again.

To remove them you might also change to "folder" in the "collections" module
and select your RAID.
Then select all images in lighttable and use "selected images" in the right sidepanel and
"remove".

Andrew Greig schrieb am 03.12.21 um 23:47:

Hi all,

I really preferred the import process in DT 3.4, maybe it is just my workflow
that needs a change.

After any use of my camera I upload the images to my computer as soon as
possible, to my Working folder on a solid state drive for speed. After I have
finished processing all of my images I Export images to my Google Drive and,
having done that I move the RAW files to storage on my RAID drive.  And then,
the next time I want to access a folder of RAW images I have to navigate to my
RAID drive and import them again, which I expect to do.

What I have found out today is that I have a lot of collections with lines like an
editing "strike out" so I thought that I would see if I could remove one, and
then I received a warning dialogue, asking me if I wanted to remove the collection from
DT and fully delete them from the computer, or not. The whole thing felt fraught with
danger. Obviously I elected not to delete from the computer, but because my  RAW files
were now in a different place I guess that DT would have no idea where they were to
delete in any case.

Also I miss the file manager search field in DT, it was so easy to find all the
shoots with a model very quickly. My subjective view is that DT file management
is not as friendly as it was.

That doesn't seem to exist in darktable, actually.
I would choose a color marker for that purpose instead, and filter by that.
Unlike lightroom, darktable can assign multiple color markers to the same image.

Hi Graham,

sorry, but this is - for technical reasons - not correct - besides that
darktable is very capable in both tasks already: managing images as well
as editing.

But: for technical reasons with non-destructive imaging you never see
what you get in any other application than the one you are editing the
images.
I already mentioned this paper
<https://web.archive.org/web/20140912051214/http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/pdfs/non_destructive_imaging.pdf>
for more background.

That's why I - and obviously many others, including the devs who
thankfully spend many efforts in also making the image management more
powerful with each release - see darktable as a program for both tasks.
And hey ... I like to see e. g. the final crop, the correct exposure,
the removed spots and all those things done on the edited image in the
image overview (call it lighttable or browser or whatever else) when I
have to select one of those images from my archive for a given purpose ...

Any other app will always show either the embedded camera jpg (like e.
g. geeqie) or some raw calculation of the original RAW ... not what I want.

Hi. I think there may be some cultural background that you're not aware of,
which is this. Linux (and Unix before that)
was developed on the philosophy of "one task one program" (see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_philosophy ), according to
which programs were designed to do one thing and to do it well:
coordination between tasks was handled by
interaction between programs. This is the way that your operating system
works (it's not just Linux: any modern operating
system works that way), and the benefits of it are that it avoids
reinventing the wheel, that it improves performance (because single-task
programs tend to be smaller and faster than big bloated ones, and so on).

Now with photo editing, there are two tasks. One of them is maintaining a
catalogue of images: I use Shotwell for that. Shotwell's quite
old, but it's reliable and fast. When I want to edit a photo, I get
Shotwell to open it in Darktable. Darktable only does one thing, which
is to edit images: it's not an image catalogue. And (being an old and
wizened Linux user) I think things should remain that way.

In my current state, it is impossible to import the whole archive, I tried
several times but even excluding the various errors in the import phase, I
ended up with an incredibly slow software that did not allow me to navigate
easily in the imported database and even to develop quickly, it had slowed
down a lot.
Now I use it by making partial imports of only the folders that interest
me, but even then, it is not easy.

Other software like RawTherapee or Capture one that integrates a mix
between catalog and sessions (browser), allow me to be much more "agile" in
the process of selection, search and pre-assessment of the image, because
I'm not forced every time to import the entire folder to view and perform a
pre-development on the file to decide which to use.

Legitimate question
Why don't you use this software since you speak so highly of it?

Because even though DarkTable is conceived from a programming point of
view and not from a photographic point of view (I'm talking about the
ordering of the modules), even though it only works with a catalog and
forces me to import what I want to work on, even though the learning curve
is not linear IT'S BADLY POWERFUL, and it does a flawless job where
other emblazoned software fails miserably.

(*) You claim that it is designed to develop RAW files, I assure you that
I have used it to work on Foveon files developed on Sigma Photo Pro and
exported to jpeg or even on files saved (by mistake) in jpeg from Sigma
cameras and I assure you that it has done a wonderful job.

In short, it works and hell it works fantastically.
I understand that there is never enough time to spend on development and
you have to streamline.
But I urge you not to dismiss the option just because you don't see it as
useful, I assure you it would make a difference in terms of adoption of the
software by a great many users who now find it inconvenient due to the
import factor.

I would also be willing to the slower generation of the previews, remember
that I use Sigma Photo Pro, the slowness has never been a problem, if it
serves to obtain a superlative result.

Hi Terry
Hi Community
Interesting and already known suggestions, however they are not feasible.
If you try to import even half of the archive I'm talking about, 250,000
files, you will immediately realize that it would become unmanageable and
slow.
That's as long as the import process takes. But - apart from migration
to a new tool - nobody really imports 500.000 images in one take.
Normally you import all or part of the photos as soon as the shooting
ends - no more than a few hundred photos at one time.
And - of course - over the years the archive will grow and finally you
reach your 500.000 images at one point.

So I'd suggest to import step by step / project by project or year by
year depending how your archive is organised (I think it is).

I don't use Lightroom.

Currently I use Xnview for a first evaluation and when I have decided what
to develop, I import it into DT.

BUT... I have more and more often the need to perform an overall
preliminary development and then to choose the final ones for the finished
development.
And with DarkTable, this dynamic that requires importing every time,
lengthens the work.

What you are requesting is something like Lightzone
<http://lightzoneproject.org/> is doing things.

They simply have a file browser that shows previews.

To do this in a reasonable time they do not use standard xmp files for
storing their non-destructive edits (I always recommend reading this
first:
https://web.archive.org/web/20140912051214/http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/pdfs/non_destructive_imaging.pdf).

Rather they use non-standard jpg images as sidecars. They contain the
latest preview as well as the edits of the RAW file.
This of course expands the necessary disk space as for every edited RAW
there is an additional JPG for the sake of having a preview ... don't
know if this is the better way to do things ...

Import has many funktions:

Believe me - you do not want to wait for edited images been shown in a

  1. Run *F-D500-V130W.exe* to extract the following file to a folder
 named “D500Update”:
 • D500_0130.bin (the camera firmware)
  2. Using a card slot or card reader, copy “D500_0130.bin” to a memory
card that has been formatted in the camera.

https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/383.html - and
that's been that way for more than a decade of DSLRs now,

while for that P1000 the instructions say:

  1. Run *F-P1000-V14W.exe* to extract the firmware to a sub-folder in
the new folder. The resulting file and folder hierarchy is shown
 below:
 • firmware (the sub-folder containing the firmware)

Note: Be sure to copy the “firmware” folder to the root (top-most)
directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the

Perhaps it's an issue of folder vs. no folder?

Re: [darktable-user] Filter pictures taken with flash

2021-09-23 Thread Bernhard
I checked the darktable database and could not find an entry of that
EXIF field in the database itself - that means that there is no native
way to do this in dt directly.
So I assume that Bill as "master of lua" had something in mind like a
lua-script working e. g. with exiftool to filter the required images and
perhaps show them in lighttable (?).

But that's nothing I can help any further with any details.

can "import" then "add to library" or "copy & import", per section 1.4.1

verbiage, not unlike a used car salesman calling a "pig" a "cochon" to
be able to double the sale price.  Frankly, I prefer to be able to open
a single image the way I did in v3.4 to the new way of opening a
library, then a folder, then an image as in v3.6.  It seems to me that
if my perception is correct, darktable is sliding too close to things I
detest about Lightroom.  If my perception is wrong, I'm very open to
seeing it differently, but this is what I see right now. Thoughts?

Willy Williams

Hi
According to what I understood, you are mostly right, except that it's
more like calling a "pig" a "pig" and a "cow" a "cow", and not only one
button with "some mammals" ;-)

In other words: There were many discussions about what (the old)
"import" means, when you (e.g.) connect your camera directly, or
"import" from a local directory. One was involving copying files, the
other did not. And this has become clearer now. Otherwise it's the same
thing.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong

Best regards,
Michael

Exactly what you say.
And if Willy wants to import just one/few image(s):
"copy & import" (or "import", if you want do edit on the memory card
(?)), then navigate to the folder, then select the image(s) - press
"import" and you're done ...

Don't see the problem here.

I am however, confused about one thing ( so far, I am sure that there
will be more ) :

In the past, when in light table view it was possible to navigate to a
directory ( that contained several several sub-directories that had
all previously been imported ) and select it for opening.  I believe
there was a setting that determined the max number of sub-directories
that could be traversed / nested ).

Use case : I have a folder from a holiday that contains sub-folders of
images by date.  I then wish to open all images from that holiday.

I cannot seem to find this option within 3.6.

Apologies if this is a numpty question but any suggestions much

No, since in JPEG (I guess you're referring to JPEG, but the same also
applies to PNG) you cannot set the desired output size: you set the
compression parameters, but the resulting file size also depends on
the content. This is contrary to music or video compression, where you
often set a desired bitrate (average or fixed), and the compressor
tweaks the compression parameters (e.g. quality settings) to achieve
it.

but apart from that it would be a nice feature.
I experience again and again that in forums both the length and the
width of an image and additionally the file size are limited.

The problem of an algorithm is probably the same as the approach I
currently take then by hand - it has to approximate it iteratively.

But what is the primary criterion if the file size is too large?
Change length/width first or the quality settings? And what is the
weighting for larger "savings" to be achieved?

happens when opening an image from the develop module. From the
lighttable it is not possible to open an image and therefore it doesn't
happen there.

That is:
- in lighttable you see the thumbnail: click on it - get error message -
thumbnail stays as is
- in darkroom - there in the film strip at the bottom: you see the
thumbnail: click on it - get error message - thumbnail is removed and
skull shown

Correct?

Hello,

as my image collection slowly but surely gets to big for a single hard
disk I thought about having multiple disks. One for the darktable
library (including cache and config) plus the most recent images and
one (or more) other disks for older stuff. To check how darktable
deals with that I copied the library to another disk with no images at
all and opened it from there (with adapted paths to cache and config).
As expected the images are shown in the collection but I cannot open
any of them ("... not available"). Strangely also the thumbnail is not
shown but instead only a skull icon. I thought that the thumbnails
would still be shown as they are stored in the cache directory that is
still available. Is it the expected behaviour that all thumbnails "are
gone" or am I missing something?

Hi Thomas,
not answering your question directly - but related to what you want to
achieve:

My suggestion:
Keep the library on your machine and move the top level folder with what
you call "older stuff" to some other drive using your file manager.

Then read this one:
https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/module-reference/utility-modules/shared/collect-images/#updating-the-folder-path-of-moved-images
darktable will then update the library and everything should be fine
thereafter ...

Please note that darktable - like all RAW editors - works non-destructive.
See this paper at
https://web.archive.org/web/20140912051214/http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/pdfs/non_destructive_imaging.pdf

That means: the edits have to be stored somewhere.
darktable stores them within a database for speed reasons - and also in
.xmps for interoperability.

If you don't want this - I fear this is not the right choice for you.
You might have a look at Lightzone e. g., this is browser-only  ... and
slow and tries to compensate this by storing .jpgs instead of .xmps with
every image.

And from my experience: I did struggle at the beginning and prefered the

In all cases where I had one or more duplicates the original was
displayed correctly but the duplicate was showing blank.

When I went through the processing steps I found that if I deleted the
"denoise (profiled)" then the image is restored. I finally found a
solution of deleting the denoise module totally from the Historyand
then adding denoise back in as a final step then the image was
correctly restored.

The problem is not seen on more recent versions of dt. The denoise
version is probably the same now as was used in prior years ... I am
still using the same camera. I have been using the daily git version
for some long time.

The problem as such is solved but others might find this interesting.

I think that this might be related:
I found that denoise profiled also destroys the edit and creates a
jumbled pattern of red lines in the thumbnail when applying the history
stack in the light table from one image to another.
Wanted to open an issue on this and am looking for suitable RAWs and

Or is there another way to get rid of it?

One safe way to do it would be:
- use the collect module to select all pictures with an old hierarchy tag
- attach to them the tag from the new hierarchy
- detach from them the old hierarchy tag
- repeat for each tag

This assumes all your pictures are in darktable's database. Another option
would be to use a script to modify all the XMP sidecars, and re-import.

while this works with darktable 3.x onwards there is a more convinient
method within the tagging module:

[darktable-user] Question about github

src/tests/integration/0001-exposure/exposure.xmp
src/tests/integration/0002-local-contrast/expected.png
src/tests/integration/0002-local-contrast/local-contrast.xmp

Perhaps this has to do with what Pascal wrote some time ago:

Pascal Obry schrieb am 15.01.21 um 12:02:

The integration tests are eating quite some band width for some people
and will become hard to manage at some point.

It has been decided to move the integration tests under a sub-module.
This will require more work for the devs but seems to be a good
compromise.

The change will happen today.

If you don't care about the integration tests and want to avoid
downloading the tests you can do:

$ git config submodule.src/test/integration.update none

So perhaps others could clarify.
I would try the given command and see if you get rid of all these
errors since you as a user most likely will not need those tests

I just did some random tests:

Bruce, I assume that you cloned the darktable repository some time ago
and just updated by 'git pull' from time to time to build your master
binaries.

That's what I did also.
When I call 'git checkout release-3.4.1' I get the same errors as you
experienced.

The command 'git config submodule.src/test/integration.update none' I
mentioned above does NOT solve this.

My quick and dirty solution:
rename the folder with the incremental darktable repo (which was 2.7GB
big) to something like "darktable_old" and do a fresh 'git clone
https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable.git'

Within this new clone (only 1.2GB big) the above command 'git checkout
release-3.4.1' works - don't however know why this is ... perhaps
someone other can clarify.
