In case of such problems, have a look at the DefineOptions.cmake file, to see what could be disabled. Of course, if you can't get a proper version for a *required* component, it gets more difficult... Remco depends on the viewpoint - aka base knowledge. I tried to build master 2 months ago - and learned I have do upgrade my debian. I did that - then I learned I have to do this and that recommended in pixls.us, github and here. Bruce Guenter schrieb am 18.10.22 um 23:53: Now, the database has recorded the images as being there, but the edits are only present in the XMP files, so the edits appear to be lost. They can be recovered by reimporting the files, which will reload the XMP sidecars, but it's somewhat surprising to need an extra step to recover a database which, hypothetically, should be at least as durable as the sidecars. This *extra step* should be presented automatically - at least, when you turn this on: look for updated xmp files on startup Scan all XMP files on startup and check if any have been updated in the meantime by some other software. If updated XMP files are found, a menu is opened for the user to choose which of the XMP files to reload (replacing darktable’s database entries by the XMP file contents) and which of the XMP to overwrite from darktable’s database. Activating this option also causes darktable to check for text sidecar files that have been added after import time (default off). https://darktable-org.github.io/dtdocs/en/preferences-settings/storage/ -- regards Bernhard https://www.bilddateien.de darktable user mailing list to unsubscribe send a mail to darktable-user+unsubscr...@lists.darktable.or

do you move the images to your RAID from within darktable? Then the images or folders striked out should be accessible again by just connecting your computer to that RAID again. To remove them you might also change to "folder" in the "collections" module and select your RAID. Then select all images in lighttable and use "selected images" in the right sidepanel and "remove". After I have finished processing all of my images I Export images to my Google Drive and, having done that I move the RAW files to storage on my RAID drive. And then, the next time I want to access a folder of RAW images I have to navigate to my RAID drive and import them again, which I expect to do. What I have found out today is that I have a lot of collections with lines like an editing "strike out" so I thought that I would see if I could remove one, and then I received a warning dialogue, asking me if I wanted to remove the collection from DT and fully delete them from the computer, or not. The whole thing felt fraught with danger. Obviously I elected not to delete from the computer, but because my RAW files were now in a different place I guess that DT would have no idea where they were to delete in any case. Re: [darktable-user] Re: [darktable-dev] Adding a browser
Hi Graham, sorry, but this is - for technical reasons - not correct - besides that darktable is very capable in both tasks already: managing images as well as editing. But: for technical reasons with non-destructive imaging you never see what you get in any other application than the one you are editing the images. I already mentioned this paper <https://web.archive.org/web/20140912051214/http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/pdfs/non_destructive_imaging.pdf> for more background. That's why I - and obviously many others, including the devs who thankfully spend many efforts in also making the image management more powerful with each release - see darktable as a program for both tasks. And hey ... I like to see e. g. the final crop, the correct exposure, the removed spots and all those things done on the edited image in the image overview (call it lighttable or browser or whatever else) when I have to select one of those images from my archive for a given purpose ... Any other app will always show either the embedded camera jpg (like e. g. geeqie) or some raw calculation of the original RAW ... not what I want. -- regards Bernhard https://www.bilddateien.de Graham White schrieb am 07.10.21 um 16:10: Hi. I think there may be some cultural background that you're not aware of, which is this. Linux (and Unix before that) was developed on the philosophy of "one task one program" (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_philosophy ), according to which programs were designed to do one thing and to do it well: coordination between tasks was handled by interaction between programs. This is the way that your operating system works (it's not just Linux: any modern operating system works that way), and the benefits of it are that it avoids reinventing the wheel, that it improves performance (because single-task programs tend to be smaller and faster than big bloated ones, and so on). Now with photo editing, there are two tasks. One of them is maintaining a catalogue of images: I use Shotwell for that. Shotwell's quite old, but it's reliable and fast. When I want to edit a photo, I get Shotwell to open it in Darktable. Darktable only does one thing, which is to edit images: it's not an image catalogue. And (being an old and wizened Linux user) I think things should remain that way. Other software like RawTherapee or Capture one that integrates a mix between catalog and sessions (browser), allow me to be much more "agile" in the process of selection, search and pre-assessment of the image, because I'm not forced every time to import the entire folder to view and perform a pre-development on the file to decide which to use. Legitimate question Why don't you use this software since you speak so highly of it? Because even though DarkTable is conceived from a programming point of view and not from a photographic point of view (I'm talking about the ordering of the modules), even though it only works with a catalog and forces me to import what I want to work on, even though the learning curve is not linear IT'S BADLY POWERFUL, and it does a flawless job where other emblazoned software fails miserably. (*) You claim that it is designed to develop RAW files, I assure you that I have used it to work on Foveon files developed on Sigma Photo Pro and exported to jpeg or even on files saved (by mistake) in jpeg from Sigma cameras and I assure you that it has done a wonderful job. In short, it works and hell it works fantastically. I understand that there is never enough time to spend on development and you have to streamline. But I urge you not to dismiss the option just because you don't see it as useful, I assure you it would make a difference in terms of adoption of the software by a great many users who now find it inconvenient due to the import factor. I would also be willing to the slower generation of the previews, remember that I use Sigma Photo Pro, the slowness has never been a problem, if it serves to obtain a superlative result. Re: [darktable-user] Adding a browser
Hi Lorenzo, Lorenzo Fontanella schrieb am 07.10.21 um 11:12: Hi Terry Hi Community Interesting and already known suggestions, however they are not feasible. If you try to import even half of the archive I'm talking about, 250,000 files, you will immediately realize that it would become unmanageable and slow. That's as long as the import process takes. But - apart from migration to a new tool - nobody really imports 500.000 images in one take. Normally you import all or part of the photos as soon as the shooting ends - no more than a few hundred photos at one time. And - of course - over the years the archive will grow and finally you reach your 500.000 images at one point. So I'd suggest to import step by step / project by project or year by year depending how your archive is organised (I think it is). I don't use Lightroom. Currently I use Xnview for a first evaluation and when I have decided what to develop, I import it into DT. BUT... I have more and more often the need to perform an overall preliminary development and then to choose the final ones for the finished development. And with DarkTable, this dynamic that requires importing every time, lengthens the work. What you are requesting is something like Lightzone <http://lightzoneproject.org/> is doing things. They simply have a file browser that shows previews. To do this in a reasonable time they do not use standard xmp files for storing their non-destructive edits (I always recommend reading this first: https://web.archive.org/web/20140912051214/http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/pdfs/non_destructive_imaging.pdf). Rather they use non-standard jpg images as sidecars. They contain the latest preview as well as the edits of the RAW file. This of course expands the necessary disk space as for every edited RAW there is an additional JPG for the sake of having a preview ... don't know if this is the better way to do things ... -- regards Bernhard https://www.bilddateien.de Lorenzo Fontanella https://www.lorenzofontanella.it/ Il gio 7 ott 2021, 03:40 Terry Pinfold ha scritto: Hi Lorenzo, I certainly understand your desire to have a catlog system like Lightroom, however, the main focus and strength of DT is its editing capabilities. I too would love a browser like Lightroom's in DT, but not at the expense of speed or performance. I checked the darktable database and could not find an entry of that EXIF field in the database itself - that means that there is no native way to do this in dt directly. It almost seems that these changes are purely verbiage, not unlike a used car salesman calling a "pig" a "cochon" to be able to double the sale price. Frankly, I prefer to be able to open a single image the way I did in v3.4 to the new way of opening a library, then a folder, then an image as in v3.6. It seems to me that if my perception is correct, darktable is sliding too close to things I detest about Lightroom. If my perception is wrong, I'm very open to seeing it differently, but this is what I see right now. Thoughts? Willy Williams Hi According to what I understood, you are mostly right, except that it's more like calling a "pig" a "pig" and a "cow" a "cow", and not only one button with "some mammals" ;-) In other words: There were many discussions about what (the old) "import" means, when you (e.g.) connect your camera directly, or "import" from a local directory. One was involving copying files, the other did not. And this has become clearer now. Otherwise it's the same thing. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong Best regards, Michael Exactly what you say. And if Willy wants to import just one/few image(s): "copy & import" (or "import", if you want do edit on the memory card (?)), then navigate to the folder, then select the image(s) - press "import" and you're done ... No, since in JPEG (I guess you're referring to JPEG, but the same also applies to PNG) you cannot set the desired output size: you set the compression parameters, but the resulting file size also depends on the content. This is contrary to music or video compression, where you often set a desired bitrate (average or fixed), and the compressor tweaks the compression parameters (e.g. quality settings) to achieve it. but apart from that it would be a nice feature. I experience again and again that in forums both the length and the width of an image and additionally the file size are limited. The problem of an algorithm is probably the same as the approach I currently take then by hand - it has to approximate it iteratively. But what is the primary criterion if the file size is too large?
