+1 I'd also welcome an option to make it easier to ship a NetBeans Platform app with bundled (Zulu) jdk, so the proposed API solution sounds good to me. "Easier" means without meddling with the harness, and making the jdk updatable. To continue work on the integration of the localisation bundles in https://github.com/apache/netbeans-l10n I've submitted this PR https://github.com/apache/netbeans-tools/pull/29 to https://github.com/apache/netbeans-tools . The adapted and improved conversion tool now catches up to 97% of the cases where files in the donated zip have corrupted license headers. I hope this will be a major step towards releasing the first set of localisation modules. How do we proceed? Someone needs to review the PR and merge it into the tools repository. The legal part is that this tool will be used to copy and adapt thousands of files which will then be part of a future release of localisation modules. I'v submitted an initial PR (https://github.com/apache/netbeans-l10n/pull/1). Next steps would be to move and adapt the conversion tool from incubator-netbeans-tools to change the license headers. I understand that working with the unchanged files we don't run into legal problems as long as we don't release anything. Nevertheless it would be good to know how to ensure, once a release is ready, legal integrety. Would it be sufficient to run the rat tasks, configuring them as in the main repository? If anyone wants to contribute, it would be good to have a page in confluence, maybe below "Apache Transition"? The number of files is huge because for every language it contains hundreds of translated Bundle files. We could merge only those languages which have been asked about on this list, but taking the german (de), spanish (es), japanese (ja) and swedish (sv) folders in the "src" subdirectory would already amount to 26921 files and 109 MB. Hi Marcos and everybody, concerning my own contribution, the integration of the bundles has stalled because I need a decision on how to proceed. I've mentioned that earlier. The first thing is that the donated files can only be integrated into the main NetBeans repository when all license headers have been changed to Apache 2.0 and fixed. Because many of the files are corrupted this can't be automated, and there are hundreds of files which need to be reviewed manually. The next, and more important, question is where to put them. The main NetBeans repository is already very large and there is, principally, no real need to integrate them there. Also, I'd suggest a different approach to the localization issue. Rather than building "multilingual editions" of the platform, I'd suggest to localise by modules in a one-module-one-language approach, meaning that the user installs a module for the desired language if he oder she needs translations. The technical side is not difficult but we need a place where we can collaborate on the corrupted headers and licenses issue. That means publishing the donated files somewhere on github as they are, but I don't know if that would be legally feasible, even if it is a private repository (not one maintained by Apache). The files have been donated to Apache, after all, and not to the general public. So, again, I'd like to proceed with the integration. My approach would be to keep the localisation separate from the main repository and I'd favour a one-language-one-module installation option. The tedious part is the review of the donated files, and it would be good to find a way to do this collaboratively. Does anybody know if it would be okay to reuse the donated files in a privately maintained repository? Hi all, I'm porting another platform app to NetBeans 11. It has one module that makes use of JavaFX controls (a chart). With JavaFX removed from jdk11, I'm looking for best practices to integrate JavaFX 11 (from https://openjfx.io/) into a NetBeans platform assembly. Does anybody have an idea? Any help is appreciated. Yes, the strange think is, if I build a zip ("ant build") and extract it, I
can add it as a platform without problem.
But, as I said, adding the nbbuild/netbeans directly causes problems. The
folder is recognized as a platform and I can add it as a NetBeans platform,
but the modules list is either empty or contains only one single module
"RCP Platform".
This is inconvenient because I want to compile a platform application
against my own fork of the platform which I'm adapting at the same time. I
don't want to zip and extract every time I make a slight change to the
platform sources.
My guess is that the ant target "zip-cluster-config" causes the magic that
make the IDE recognize the modules, because this is what is called in
addition to "build-nozip".
I'm going to file an issue tonight.

Adding NetBeans sources as NetBeans platform
Hi all, in NetBeans 11.1 IDE, I can't add the sources (nbbuild/netbeans) as a NetBeans platform. The build folder is recognized as a platform, but after running ant build-nozip only a small and varying number of modules is detected - sometimes one, sometime none at all. So, take this line and debug it a) in plain Java 11, and b) in this NetBeans platform (any version but running on JDK 11): java.lang.Package p = Main.class.getPackage(); Class java.lang.Package in Java 11 differs in many aspects from Java 8. In Java 11, it has a private field called "packageInfo" of type "Class", which in cases a) (the working case) is a reference to the actual package-info class object, i.e. MyPackage.package-info b) always references "java.lang.Package$1PackageInfoProxy", i.e. the java.lang.Package class object (and therefore NOT the class object resulting from the compilation of e.g. MyPackage.package-info.java as it would be supposed). It's definitely not a JDK problem. The code works fine in a non-platform application with jdk11.0.4. It's a problem of the combination JDK 11 plus NetBeans Platform. Hi, I think all the community translations are now in the 3rd donation zip ( http://bits.netbeans.org/download/apache-donation/ApacheNetBeansDonation3. zip ). So they have been donated, but they can't be publish within the Apache infrastructure as along as the license headers havn't been fixed. This is tedious. I started it for the German part: https://github.com/borisheithecker/netbeans-translations-de (Christian, you probably find you work from the old days here...) This is a one-module approach, i.e. you install/add one additional module to your IDE or platform app to get one language. These modules could be made public in a separate repository. I would mean decoupling the translations from the main repository, which is very large already. Hi all, to continue my work on the localisation, I need a decision on where to publish the localisation modules. There'll be one module per language. For those who want to work on the individual modules, an adapted license conversion tool could perhaps be published at https://github.com/apache/ netbeans-tools . Still a decision is pending. Hi Junichi, I've converted the Japanese language files with the extended tool and pushed them to https://github.com/borisheithecker/incubator-netbeans/tree/netbeans-l10n2-ja/netbeans-l10n/src/ja . Around 400 files would remain to be reviewed manually, mostly because of missing license headers in the original (donated) source files. The extended tool is available here ( https://github.com/borisheithecker/incubator-netbeans-tools) . Switch to the netbeans-l10n branch. Translations are exclusively taken from the 3rd donation zip, and it's evident that they are incomplete. However, all license headers have been fixed and adapted to Apache 2.0. If we create localisation support step by step in accordance with demand and willingness to contribute by those who want to use the individual languages, I propose to reuse the donated bundles in a different approach. The approach is, create and publish localisation support as plug-ins for each language separately. I've had an hour spare time this morning, and I've got a german language plug-in (nbm) to work ready for NetBeans 11.1. Technically, this is no difficult task, but the license issue remains. But, of course, fixing one language is much less work than 25. All of it can be documented in Confluence. If proceeding this way, then there's no need to integrate the language part of the 3rd donation into the main repository. We'd rather create a separate one on GitHub. NetBeans language bundle
Hi all, I've started to work on the language bundles again, and I'm still stuck with the license conversion. Although having made several improvements and adaptions to the license categorization and conversion tool available at https://github.com/apache/netbeans-tools/tree/master/convert, it still outputs about these numbers "cddl, unrecognized file: 1324 no cddl license: 33876" The problems are corrupted files, typos, old Sun licenses not converted for Oracle, or missing license headers. Some bundles contain more corrupted files, other less. Before continuing this work, it would be good to know if users really need all potentially available locales. There are 25 locales left, after having already deleted some of them which were originally present in the donated zip. I've removed those bundles where I could determine by myself that no work had been done on them except starting a localisation project by copying the default. (For example, the Bundle ta (Tamil) did not contain a single Tamil character, so I removed it). However, there are, for example, bundles for ca (Catalan) or gl_ES (galician) which require a lot of work and I think we should determine the demand for before tackling it. Hi Yann, which locale/language are you interested in in particular? The bundles have been donated as part of the 3rd donation, but they're still not integrated into the repository. Basically, all that has to be done is change and fix the license headers, but that turned out to be an extremely time consuming task for me. I started working on it in march but it soon turned out that the existing licence conversion tool couldn't handle a great part of the files. I made a couple of changes to the conversion tool to make it catch more of the complicated cases, but still at least around 1000 files need to be fixed manually. We're dealing with text files (.properties files) and html files. The problematic cases are files where the original license is incomplete, or if (parts of) two licenses can be found, or if code is placed within the license text. Localisation used to be a community project from the beginning, and my impression is that the code was not maintained very well. Many languages are incomplete, and for some locales I wonder if anybody really need them at present. My idea is to integrate (for a start) only the languages with a declared demand and completeness to a degree that at least a basic localised platform app can be built.
