As per someone else's comments a while back, I'd be wary of associating the
product with the 'enterprise'. It may be a great marketing ploy, but its
downsides outweight its upsides It may be a great 'in joke/association', but
this in itself is unlikely to gain commercial (brace yourself) 'mind-share'.
Indeed the 'enterprise' association may well distance the rest of the
crucial Open-Source/free-thinking community.

Perception is reality!

So, to continue the in joke.

I do love the idea for a T-Shirt:

AMQP Enterprise Messaging

Sorry for the HTML.

So, my votes:
+7 Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging
+3 I'm with Qpid

Given I chair the AMQP WG I need to be neutral. So I'm happy to vote on
Rabbit or OpenAMQ slogans too :-) This is just too much fun.

I've compiled the list of 53 suggestions we have had so far, if I've
missed one out then let me know asap.

So taking Carl's suggestion everyone gets 10 points:

Allocate them as you feel free so if you absolutely positively must
have that slogan you can give it 10.

Once we have a Top 10 then we can decide if we want to:
a) Vote on a winner takes all
b) Take the top n for use.
c) Reopen the suggestions.

Really I'm hoping for an a) or b) but there you go.

Could we consider this to be a runoff, and have a round of
suggestions-for-final-modifications to the winner(s) ?

If I include negative votes for some slogans, does that mean
I can give other ones larger positive numbers, just so they
all add up to 10? ( I had a job doing something like that in the
recent election here in the States...)

We should have a test app that sends the messages
that you see on those little heart-shaped candies
at Valentine's Day:

Wow, they change every year! Who knew?

maybe we could have our own personalized ones printed up.

I HEART QPID

QPID: Quite Perfect Innate Design (or some variant)

If you're looking for a T-shirt-like/mug logo how about a play on 'The
Classic':

  I'm with QPid!

This also almost works with the arrow-like AMQP logo!

BTW is the capitalisation of QPid settled on 'Qpid'?

Or possibly:

  AMQP?: I'm with QPid!
AMQP?: I love QPid!(opportunity to go with some
Eros/cherub-type-stuff?)
  QPid loves AMQP

BTW I'm not even going to go near the Kenny Everett Show character thing for

Sorry - been away for a couple of days and just caught up with this thread now.

I think it's interesting here to look at a quick definition (from
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/slogan):

1. A phrase expressing the aims or nature of an enterprise,
organization, or candidate; a motto.
2. A phrase used repeatedly, as in advertising or promotion: "all the
slogans and shibboleths coined out of the ideals of the peoples for
the uses of imperialism" Margaret Sanger.
3. A battle cry of a Scottish clan.

What we seem to be arguing about here is whether we want a slogan that
fulfils definition 1. or definition 2. (although perhaps the Glasgow
contingent would like to make some suggestions fulfil definition 3.)

Personally I think that right now we want to have a catchy
"advertising" slogan to draw people in, along with logos etc that work
well on marketing material (I want a Qpid t-shirt :-) ). Much as I
agree that something like "Qpid: Open Source AMQP Messaging"
succinctly describes the aims of the project, I don't think it draws
in people to take a look. Furthermore it does nothing to help people
remember the name Qpid.

We *do* also need to make sure that in searches for AMQP and
Enterprise Messaging, Qpid features highly. However I think there's a
fair probability that if you've heard of AMQP you've probably heard of
Qpid.

So I would probably argue that we need (at least) two different
slogans... And of the two I think that advertising and drawing people
is is what we are currently more in need of. We need to get the name
"Qpid" out there so that people remember it (even if they don't know
what is does)...

Now... time to think of some battle cries...

Maybe it would be ok to have a set of (4?) slogans to choose from - people
would them have the freedom to be fun or purposeful.

I'm not sensing much of a groundswell around any of the slogans thus far and
I think the different approaches both have value.

We already have a product brand in the name Apache Qpid and almost a logo -
so we are uniform in other ways.

Vive La Difference (apologies to Arnaud for any disgraceful spelling here !)

It's OK to differ ;->

But let me explain my reasoning: the whole point of a slogan is to
establish identity so people know what it is. AMQP and messaging are
fundamental to what Qpid is.

Yes, you could always put that stuff elsewhere on the page so that each
page tries to remember to say clearly what Qpid is. But then there's no
real need for a slogan.

I tend to think the most important thing a slogan can do is grab the
attention of the reader, and while I do recognize it is tempting to try
to work in all the usual buzzwords (AMQP, Messaging, Enterprise, etc),
so far everything that does this ends up being so bland that it's almost
completely unmemorable.

I'd like to suggest that we consider another direction for the slogan.
Something that doesn't necessarily include all (or any) of the
buzzwords, but does grab enough of your attention that hopefully you
might consider reading further. I'd like to see a few options in this
vein before making a final decision.

So in the spirit of brainstorming, here are a few random ideas that (for
better or worse) would stick in my head longer than 3 seconds after
reading them.

Apache Qpid: Qpid is as Qpid does.

Apache Qpid: No pants. No shirts. Just middleware.[*]

Re: Qpid slogan?

2009-01-27 Thread Justin Ross
I am glad that my first post to qpid list is on a matter of such gravity.

I think Rafi is right, and any buzzword-haevy slogan makes us look like
squares. Never!

Truly, something more playful is in order, something that speaks from (and to)
a community of fun-loving, geeky software peeps. "Enterprisey" and "extra
profitable!" can be added in some *other* prominent location; they don't have
to be in the slogan.

I tend to think the most important thing a slogan can do is grab the
attention of the reader, and while I do recognize it is tempting to try
to work in all the usual buzzwords (AMQP, Messaging, Enterprise, etc),
so far everything that does this ends up being so bland that it's almost

I'd like to suggest that we consider another direction for the slogan.

2009-01-27 Thread Manuel Teira Paz
You've just brought back to my mind a sentence from Monty Python Holy
Grail, perhaps it could add a bit of fun:

Apache Qpid: Message for you, Sir!

Perhaps it doesn't make a lot of sense if you didn't watch the movie...
Regards.

Also, for those who really like buzzwords, I think it may be worth
considering how the slogan will be presented, e.g. when presented like
this, there is room for both a memorable slogan and plenty of buzzwords:

   Apache Qpid: Send a Message!

This sort of suggests to me that we may actually be looking for two
things, the above the line portion being a true slogan that functions as
a hook for people to remember, and the stuff below the line which is
really more of an elevator pitch sort of thing. I think we should be
careful not to try to squeeze the elevator pitch into the slogan. IMHO
they can be more effective as two separate things.

Re: Qpid slogan?

2009-01-26 Thread Rafael Schloming

  I'm with Qpid[**]
  >

[*] Works best next to an appropriate logo, e.g.:
http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/PLA/CMO1101~Amoretto-I-Posters.jpg

[**] Not really a slogan per/se, but would make a great T-shirt for Qpid
developers. ;)

My 2 cents: I think the term 'Enterprise' is often overused and
consequently has negative associations for some. I'd prefer leaving that
word out of any slogan. I also think it should either be demonstrably
true or bland enough to not be testable. ('Open Source AMQP Messaging'
would be my favourite of those I've seen - bland but clear and to the
point!)

sort of positive statement (but not a measurable claim, and preferably

I think they all have plus points (great ideas everyone). For me we need to
say what our project does (i.e. messaging) in the slogan and that it's AMQP.
I think the 'Apache' gives us the Open Source credential.

So, from my pov that leaves us with:

Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging <-- This one is my favourite i think.
Apache Qpid: Fast, Reliable, AMQP Messaging
Apache Qpid: Advanced Messaging, Quick, Purposeful
Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging that just works.
Apache Qpid, Enterprise Messaging through AMQP
Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging
What do other people think about one of these ?

Here's a summary of all the proposed slogans..

Apache Qpid: Open Source AMQP Messaging
Apache Qpid: Fast, Reliable, AMQP Messaging
Apache Qpid: AMQP Messaging from Point A to B in 10 microseconds or less!
Apache Qpid: *The* AMQP Implementation
Apache Qpid: Advanced Messaging, Quick, Purposeful
Apache Qpid, Enterprise Messaging through AMQP
Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging
Apache Qpid - Fast, Reliable, Interoperable Enterprise Messaging
Apache Qpid - The Open Source AMQP Implementation

Keep on proposing I just wanted to summarize it to compare all of them.

I think something that close to something that is all over google as
linked to a direct competitor is a Really Bad Idea.

+1.

I think we have two options here.

1. We never say that Qpid is an AMQP implementation. In which case, the
slogan should express some key attributes of AMQP. Therefore something like
"Apache Qpid - Fast, Reliable, Interoperable Enterprise Messaging" would
be nice.

2. We do express the fact that Qpid is an AMQP implementation. In which
case, the slogan should express the fact that we do it wright.
Therefore, something like

"Apache Qpid - The Open Source AMQP Implementation" sounds good.
