Re: [slim] Re: Rhapsody on Slim
The new client is pretty slick with some creature comforts. It does not work with Real Slim. Real Slim does not recognize that Rhapsody is running. It does download 160kbps audio files. Mine show up as WMAs but I think its likely that WMP is my default player for the type it downloads. You can play these files in WMP and Winamp on the same machine you downloaded them on if you select Authorize Computer from Tools dropdown. If you add these files to your slimserver scan, it will pick them up. Hitting play adds them to now playing but they will not play will not leave Stop mode. I am going to keep playing with this. RE: [slim] Re: iTunes / OSX / Mac Mini / Ripping = yikes
or alternatively, don't do a complete recheck until the size of the main folder has stabilised for a certain duration ? (maybe that's what the setting does?) No, the scan just checks for the modified time changing on the XML file. This seems like a really sensible suggestion as the user's iTunes activity is likely to come in bursts when adding tracks or modifying tags. I'd suggest opening this as an enhancement request... Actually - I'm curious now - doesn't the perl script simply check the iTunes cached file tables for changes, or is it plowing through all the subfiles on the disk ? Can I make it do just the former if it's doing the latter ? The scan checks the iTunes XML file. As I understand it, any new tracks are added to the database and the file scanned for tag info (the XML does not contain all the tags SlimServer requires - which ones are missing I wonder?) If a track is already in the database it is ignored unless the file modified time has changed. This is actually pretty quick if 99% of your library has not changed. What I find kills SlimServer performance is scanning of the playlists - I have a number of thousand+ track playlists and when they are scanned is when I lose connectivity. One enhancement already suggested is reading only selected playlists from the XML. Another thought - on the mac platform, wouldn't it be possible to listen for applescript notices/events or something to know when itunes is in process of ripping or itunes-LAME is doing it's thing, and suspend any synchronization until the end of the process ? The Slim developers like all the core functionality to be cross platform so I doubt that would be favoured. James NOTICE: If received in error, please destroy and notify sender. Re: [slim] iTunes / OSX / Mac Mini / Ripping = yikes
That's not exactly true. With the default setting, SlimServer will wait a minimum of 60 seconds after ending an import of your iTunes library before starting a new one. If your library is very large and you are ripping for a long time, you may see that the iTunes importing is running most of the time. You can adjust the delay in the server settings to make it wait longer, but the downside is that YOU have to wait longer to see new songs in your library. -dean On Apr 26, 2005, at 2:36 AM, Craig, James (IT) wrote: Have you changed the default iTunes library scan interval? I'm a longtime happy slim owner - up until recently I've run the 5.4 server on a martian netdrive (low power linux box), but, for closer integration with itunes and my ipod etc, I've decided to experiment with putting the server on my new mac mini, where I also intended doing the ripping from within iTunes using blacktree's lame plugin. I have a slimp3 and a SB1. 6.x releases on my martian seemed to crash a lot when trying to open radio streams, so now seemed a good time to move across, and I also took opportunity to copy music from my 10/100-only accessible Martian to an external firewire drive. So far so good - after remembering to open both ports on my mini's firewall (original slimp3 only needed 9000, hence much confusion on my part) and installing 6.0.2, setting iTunes to look to music I've placed on external firewire drive all works nicely. Live search is great ! (but doesn't work in Camino yet?) OK - now I figured I'd test the end-to-end workflow, ripping a CD and observing it turning up in itunes and slim with no extra copying. And it works ! Yay. But, while ripping it basically seems impossible to do anything with my slims whatsoever. In fact, they both blackout and lose connection sporadically as the rip progresses, I _think_ coordinated with the write of file and tag info - is this simply because the itunes communication with the server is thrashing during the encode ? Is there anything I can do here ? Anyone in same boat ? I'd expected that if I was listening that the rip perhaps would go more slowly but that the server would still be able to serve with a reasonable 'nice' level but no can do it seems - moreover I even lose the displays completely. This all makes me a little worried that my mini is not going to work out as a server if it's doing anything else which is a tad disturbing given that it's a 1.42GHz with a gig of memory and using external fast firewire drive. Am I missing some way of optimising my setup and workflow? I'm also very curious about other mini owner's experiences of running the server - I'm almost contemplating sticking an old laptop on the network ONLY to act as a music server, to be honest Thanks for a great product, despite my grips above! and for all the superb support, -g. -- gocam ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss NOTICE: If received in error, please destroy and notify sender. [slim] SlimServer, Win2000 and Shortcuts
I was under the impression that it should be possible to place shortcuts to other folders within the folder that SlimServer scans in order to include music held elsewhere. Well, I've tried it and it just doesn't seem to work. Even a shortcut to another folder on the same disk didn't get picked up. I'm running SlimServer 6.0.1(2895) on Win2000 Pro with SP4. Re: [slim] .ape and slim crash 4_26 nightly
Please file a bug and attach the track to the report. This looks like you have some sort of corrupted tags that cause the parser to run past the end of the file. One case that caused this in the past was ID3 tags written in and overlapping the APEtags. The current module should be handling this, but its hard to guess at how many ways corruption can occur. That could be the proper output for a full single track, but again, I haven't paid enough attention to flac outputs before. now, you say this works when you run manually, so if you do exactly the same steps as you have for this debug do you see anything different in the debug output when it is working manually? Of course, I expect you won't get the end of file notice, but I'm curious if there is anything at all different leading up to playing. As to your question of temp files, the conversion uses stdout so the data is in memory only from original file, converting to PCM (WAV) and streamed to the SqueezeBox. -kdf ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Yes - 100% completed - status bar is reading 0 / 0 / 0 so all tracks have been analysed / added etc. Whether I start slim.exe manually or via the service it starts ok then within about 5-10 minutes it will ramp up to 100% CPU and stay there for 20-30 minutes. It will then come back down again. It will then jump back up again on regular intervals. I saw a post sometime ago that it was related to Slim - MM integration and so I disabled MM until I heard anymore. [slim] Making slimserver open close its log file
Non-unix users, move along - there's nothing to see! I've just added a logrotate entry for slimserver. The postrotate entry is currently /etc/init.d/slimserver restart, which just kills slimserver and restarts it. I'm unlikely to be listening to music when this happens, but it would be a pain if I was. I don't suppose there's some way of getting a running slimserver to close and open its log file by sending it a signal, is there? -- max.spicer The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws but Max stepped into his private boat and waved good-bye ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] MusicMagic, SlimServer 6.01 and SoftSqueeze 2.0b3
kdf [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: it reads the data fairly fast. The problem is that MusicMagic itself can take DAYS to run full profiles on all the songs. This means that the database is always changing, so the server will keep reloading the musicmagic data 60's seconds after it finishes the previous pass. If you go into server settings-musicmagic, then you can set the MusicMagic Reload Interval to a very large number. Alternatively, wait a while before turning 'use musicmagic' on in server settings. I also recently filed a bug about this plugins effect on slimservers cpu and memory usage. If this really is the reason for the cpu part of that, then perhaps the default value should be significantly larger? -michael ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: TelCanto for Slimserver Question
Thanks Jim. As I think about it, it may be because I have it set up as follows: drive/A SELECTION OF TWO DIFFERENT FOLDERS (FLAC MUSIC)/Artists/Albums/Tracks If I got rid of the two different folders within the drive, I am thinking that it will expand down to the track level. I think it can only expand down four levels, and the fifth division that I have when browsing this way is not supported by TelCanto. [slim] Re: Unable to play FLAC files, related somehow to service?
kdf Wrote: what's the crash message? -kdf Cannot replicate that again, think it's just a red herring. The interesting thing now is why Slimserver is using the path/file to flac.exe C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread\flac.exe when running as a service, which doesn't work. And why it then uses C:\PROGRA~1\SLIMSE~1\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread\flac.exe when not running as a service, which works. RE: [slim] Re: MusicMagic, SlimServer 6.01 and SoftSqueeze 2.0b3
I have the exact same issue. i see shorten listed as windows-only support. my slimserver is running on osx. although the time it would take to script converting all my shn to flac would be significantly less than it would take to write osx support, i'll still bite. before i dig too much thought is there some serious reason shn support isn't done or is it just a matter of someone writing the code? am i just missing something and does shorten+osx work? thanks, -- bill ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Unable to play FLAC files, related somehow to service?
Just installed SlimServer on my laptop. All works absolutely fine on here. So this proves 3 things: 1 - It is not a player (hardware) issue. 2 - It is not a network issue. 3 - I do know what I am doing. So back to my server If all security settings were not correct 2 things would happen: 1 - Slimserver wouldn't be able to show stuff such as length of songs when browsing - it does. 2 - It would state it couldn't find a flac.exe - it doesn't. So having uninstalled Slimserver, reinstalled to different directories, setup the service to run under different accounts etc... etc... what the heck is wrong with it? I can only imagine something is being left behind in between reinstalls. I've searched the registry for any mention of slim after uninstalling, and deleted the keys/values. I am absolutely baffled as to why my only course of action seems to be to reinstall the Operating System on my server. -- Jim ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Unable to play FLAC files, related somehow to service?
My XP installation is working fine for everything - except this. Long ago (up this thread) I had resorted to having 1 test FLAC file in the same folder as Slimserver. I also tested this from C:\MUSIC too. Just one file. Rather than reinstall XP I'd like to find out the root of the problem - and also it's quite a chore reinstalling all the other stuff on my server. What I'm going to do now is install XP on another partition - I don't know why, but just so you guys can see that is is a problem somewhere with the SlimServer code or a turd that SlimServer has planted on my PC, and not with my PC/Disks/Files etc... As for messing with my Windows, I don't mean I've blindly gone around screwing things up, what I mean is that I've not installed all services, I've removed a lot of the M$ bloatware crap from the install etc... etc This is exactly the same install which I used on my laptop, which if you see above has no problems with the server running as a service. -- Jim ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
