[slim] Re: For people who use the COMPOSER tag...

2006-04-02 Thread ceejay

Hi

Actually this capability is already there, its just not referred to in
the blurb. You can use the keyword COMPOSER in a title format string
and Slimserver will happily use it in both the web interface and the
standard UI.

So the request should probably be add COMPOSER to the blurb so we know
we can use it

In testing this, however, I ran into what looks like a different issue,
which if confirmed would be a real bug. Using Softsqueeze (tho I expect
it would be the same for a real player) to select Song Title Format, I
should be able to select any of the formats defined in the web form:
however I seem to be getting just four to choose from - apparently a
random four. To get my COMPOSER test case to come up I had to delete
several formats until the one I wanted became one of the lucky ones.

I am using 6.2.2 5549

If you are interested in the use of COMPOSER, you might also want to
look at my enhancement requests

If you are like me, and find the full job daunting, you can do it bits
at a time. Using MP3tag, add ArtistSort to the columns (right click on
one of the existing columns and Customize columns) and sort by Artist
and -then- by ArtistSort. Then you the ones you haven't assigned an
ArtistSort appear at the top, but they are still sorted by Artist.

 Sean.

P.S. The way to add the tag in mp3tag is using Alt-T.

Check out the MP3Tag actions, they offer an amazingly powerful way of
automating this kind of thing.

You could easily define an action to set the ArtistSort automatically
based on the reversed Artist tag. This would take a bit of fiddling
to deal with more (or less) than two names, but should be doable.

Alternatively, to make the action easier to set up, use the filter
(which allows regular expressions, I think) first to find all your
tracks with artists that have exactly two names, and apply the
appropriate action to them, then repeat for three, etc.

Mark,

Sorry to hear you are having problems when other people are using
theirs fine.

The product as it ships supports the native formats of the Squeezebox
range and we are working as hard as we can to support the other
formats. OGG is now available and I hope to have AAC available this
weekend or early next week. APE will follow shortly afterwards. It is
unfortunate what happened with the drive compatibility but that was an
issue for Qnap to sort out which they did very quickly.

Just like Squeezebox, the product will get better and better as time
goes on with updates and fixes.

Just wanted to wish you guys good luck. We SB owners appreciate every

In fact I might still do that when my Climate Prediction model has

Slimserver works perfectly well on the Qnap. There is a problem with
AAC files which Progressive are working on (I understand this might be
Mark's problem). Given the efficient way other teething problems have
been dealt with, I trust that Progressive will fix this too. I can

detail and I wouldn't want anyone to go away with the idea that the
Qnap as a Slimserver solution fundamentally doesn't work. It does and
very well, surprisingly well for the money.

[slim] Fishbone skin - Handheld skin (Modified) for browsing Speed

2006-04-02 Thread wiped

I've always used the fishbone skin, since I liked the information shown
in that skin. I've also modofied the latest versions of it to still
show me the cover images...

However lately I’ve realised that the skin is slow and one of the
reasons for the music stopping and stuttering when browsing e.g.
albums, new music or just starting the web interface.
So I change to the handheld skin, which is light and fast. I can now
browse around without my music stopping...

I missed the option to see the cover when browsing new music and
albums, also I missed the nice feature to have two frames (nice when
adding a few different albums).
I also thought the status page on the handheld skin could show more
info, like the playlist and be a bit more compact.

To fix this I modified the handheld skin to fit my needs, it's not
finished yet, but I thought I should put it here in case someone has
similar problems and want to see what can be done with the handheld
skin.
All credits to the creators of the Handheld skin!

If you want to test, just unzip in your html folder and either type :
http://localhost:9000/h2 or change to it in the server settings.

(6.2.1)
Changes:

Status page:
Playlist added
Compacting of the information

Album browsing:
Cover added
Button to remove the album from the playlist added

Frames:
Divided into two frames for ease of adding multiple albums and browsing
while still seeing the playlist

Formatting:

2006-04-02 Thread danco

You can observe the CPU used by vartious processes from Activity Monitor
(in the Utilities folder).

There are some issues, I think, with refreshing the Web browser. It
sometimes takes over the system for just long enough to cause hiccups.

You don't, after all, have to use the browser at all, you can do most
things from the Squeezebox using the remote. Even if this doesn't suit
your normal way of using the SB, I think you should try it to see if
there are still hiccups or not, as that will help in diagnosis.

The problem would be reduced if the text that is displayed when the unit
is off scrolled across the screen slowly, or maybe bounced back and
forth across it. If it moved 1 pixel in 10 seconds it would spread the
load over the whole display and eliminate the uneven burn-in problem by
spreading it out over the whole display.

Of course, displaying a scrolling newsticker instead of the clock will
also solve the problem...

[slim] Throw away your computer - ReadyNAS as music server

2006-04-02 Thread slimditty

I've been using the READYNAS device from infrant for over a year now and
am very happy with it as a Slimserver music server. Infrant offers a
module for download that turns their NAS into a slimserver server. It
is slower than using a computer but it saves a great deal on your
electricity bill. Currently, I'm using the x6 with 500MB drives -
giving me over 1.5TB of storage on RAID 3. I would recommend performing
a memory upgrade to the base device.
One caveat - since the ReadyNAS is using Linux, it won't serve up your
WMA files. You have to use a different format. It also is somewhat less
customizable in terms of the add-ons that you can install.
For those interested in a hard-core discussion of music serving and my
experience over the years, feel free to check out my blog entry on the

Howdy,

I just pulled a recent version (as of 4/02) of the slimprotolib (via
SoftSqueeze) and tried to build it. A few comments:

1) You might want to mention in the readme that you need to have the
FLAC source installed. I didn't have any FLAC installed and then I
tried to install the packaged FLAC version which didn't include the
header files. Once I downloaded the source, built and installed it,
things were much happier.

2) When compiling under linux, all the gettimeofday() calls fail as
linux (at least under RH 8.0) need to pass two params to gettimeofday
(I altered them to pass NULL and things compiled).

Just FYI

[slim] WPA Problems still unresolved!!!

2006-04-02 Thread oli

Sorry to re-post on an old/open subject, but I am still to receive a
response from Slim after almost 2 weeks and am becoming slightly
disillusioned and fed up. In the hope that this post either jogs
someone at Slim in to action or receives a solution/suggestion from a
forum member here goes...

I am running the following:

SB2 (Firmware: 28), connecting wirelessly to a Netgear DG834GT
(Firmware: 1.02.04), connecting wirelessly to a Netgear WG511T
(Firmware: 2.52.29.4), which is plugged in to a Dell Inspiron 5150,
(connected to an external Seagate hard drive for music storage) and is
running Slimserver 6.2.1.

For almost a year I was running this setup, protected with WPA-PSK with
absolutely no problems. However, on resetting the SB2's MAC address, due
to a problem with SqueezeNetwork and on the advice of Slim support, the
SB2 will no longer connect to my network when WPA Personal is
activated. The network is found, but a strange IP address, different
from all the others on the network, is assigned, and the SB2 fails to
conncet to Slimserver. The only way I can currently connect is by
disabling WPA protection, which I do not want and nor should I have to
do.

I provided Ross Levine at Slimsupport with this information almost 2
weeks ago and despite asking for an update over a week ago have still
to receive any response from him or anyone else at Slim support.

I would be very grateful if any forum members could help out with this
issue, and if someone at Slim would be good enough to contact me and at
the very least update on their progress with this problem.

Cheers

But you did say you were running on an Airport network. If you mean

It's all to do with expectation. I bought (ordered) this product in

the bull about the Chinese New Year and the rest. Even if there were
problems in getting the hardware shipped, presumably Progressive could
have been working in parallel to get SlimServer working in all its

Yes I use Apple Lossless; disk space is cheap and it's pointless
ripping CDs to a lossy format because if you have a half-decent sound
system, the difference is night and day, far more than any messing with
the power supply will reveal.

I also wonder about the long term viability of the solution. There no
charge for the integration work of Slim Server into the TS-101 and
apart from making a turn on the hardware, where's the incentive to keep
it up to date? I'm resigned to the fact that while a PC hosted SB3 is
likely to evolve for the better over time, a TS-101 hosted SB3 is
likely to be frozen in time - bugs, warts and all - once Progressive
lose interest and move on to some other flavour of the month.

The TS-101 is a closed system and while it will always be useful as
NAS, the USP of it hosting SlimServer may or may not be long term.

[slim] Re: WPA Problems still unresolved!!!

2006-04-02 Thread abdomen

You may want to try upgrading to the latest nightly of 6.2.2. A number
of firmware revisions have been made to correct problems with various
wireless configurations. There is a list of wireless configurations
that have been tested. I just did a quick search, and there is also a
critical bug involving MAC addresses that Slim Devices seem to be
working very hard on tracking down and correcting. You could read over
the comments and see if it seems to be the same issue you have
experienced; if so and you think there is any new and helpful
information you can contribute, you could create a login for the bug
system and add it.

With respect, perhaps you should have considered that before

happy to take the risk as (a) Progressive's incentive will be the same
as SD's (who also provide free upgrades) - building a reputation and a
satisfied customer base and (b) even if support does stop at some

does today, the Qnap will still work as a NAS and it wasn't so
expensive anyway.

Thanks ceejay. I guess I should have been more enterprising and just
tried adding COMPOSER!

I did vote for your bugs. Obviously classical music fans share a lot
of the same frustrations in a TITLE/ARTIST/ALBUM world, and I hope
others will make the (tiny) effort to vote for your suggestions too.

You're right: the Title format management seems buggy. I had a heck
of a time getting my SB3 to find the format I added. I finally resorted
to supplying the same value 4 times:
TRACKNUM. TITLE (ARTIST) COMPOSER - ALBUM
And now SettingsSong Title Format on my SB3 displays this value on
two lines and blanks on the next three lines.

But the good news is that COMPOSER now displays for every track that
has the tag.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-04-02 Thread ultra238a

Mark,

I'll answer a few of your questions.

Firstly we made a mistake about announcing the product so early. Qnap
prommised us the product would launch back at the end of October last
year and they kept pushing it back and pushing it back. We could have
had a small amount of units just before the Chinese new year but we
didn't want to take them because they would have been off the first
production run. Of course when the first batch did arrive after the
Chinese new year we didn't take into account how long these things
would take to format. All of this has been documented though in this
thread and others.

With respect to us supporting the product in to the future I can only
assure you that we won't loose interest. Why won't we loose interest,
well maybe something to do with the fact that we are the UK distributor
of the SlimDevices products in the UK might have something to do with
it.

I suggest that if you have any further issues with the TS-101 you have
purchased you contact me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to
see if we can resolve any of them.

One last thing. I have a Linn active system at home which could be
considered to be a half decent hifi system and you can't beat a well
encoded FLAC file so if disc space isn't a problem then I would convert
if I were you.

As Michael says, Slimserver won't decode Ogg natively. I don't know if
this applies to radio streams as well as .ogg files, but you may need
to install LAME on your PC to get this stream to work - it's pretty
straightforward, see the Wiki below. Upgrading to 6.2.2. may also help
- it isn't far away from becoming an official firmware release.

GDsqueeze - do you have LAME installed ?

[slim] Adventures In Reinventing the Wheel

2006-04-02 Thread jonheal

Several forum members are using the WebLogger plugin to display what’s
currently playing on their Squeezeboxes on their personal web sites.

My philosophy: Why spend five minutes implementing a perfectly
functional existing solution when you can spend 30 or 40 hours doing a
substandard version of the same thing from scratch?

I’m not a PERL programmer, but I deduced from looking at the scripts
for WebLogger that it relied on a technique to similar to the one
employed in KDF’s Execute Script plugin to ascertain when SlimServer
played files. The Execute Script plugin listens for various SlimServer
events and then executes scripts when the events fire. I was already
using Execute Script, and it seemed like it would be fairly
straightforward to write a script to update a page on our web site that
would execute on SlimServer’s Play, Stop and Squeezebox Power Off
events.

Taking a look at the Technical Information link on the SlimServer web
interface, I learned about SlimServer’s XML skin. By browsing to:
http://localhost:9000/xml/status.xml, I found that the XML returned
from this URL contained all of the information that I wished to display
on our web site. So, I set about writing a script that would read the
current “status” XML, extract the desired data, insert the data into a
much simplified XML structure, post the XML to our web site, and then
FTP the current cover image, should one exist. It took quite a while to
debug, but the script itself was not too difficult to produce. Getting
it to run with the Execute Script plugin was another story. It simply
would not work. Double-clicking on the script worked fine, but using
the Execute Script plugin, my script hung trying to load the XML from
status.xml. I still don’t know what the issue is (although I assume
it’s permissions-related), but eventually I had to look for a
workaround.

I tried all sorts of options, calling my script in a batch file, moving
the portion of my code that would not run into an executable, etc., but
all attempts failed. Finally, I focused on the Task Scheduler. I had
discovered earlier that running the script as a Scheduled Task worked.
I started looking around for information about scripting the task
scheduler. My plan was to have the Execute Script plugin execute a
script that instructed the Task Scheduler to launch my script.

My SlimServer is running on a Windows 2000 box. Scripting the Task
Scheduler on Windows 2000 is possible, but not extremely pretty. And
while I found how script the creation of a task, I couldn’t find a
means of scripting a command to “run this task now.” XP, however,
includes an application called schtasks.exe that can be scripted to run
a task immediately. Officially, this program runs only on XP and higher,
but I found a tip about using a hex editor to make a slight change to
the program that allows it to run under Windows 2000.

Once I got the task scheduling and executing squared away, I had a
little trouble getting Execute Script to recognize the Play event. KDF
helped me through that issue with some changes to the Execute Script
plugin. I also made a few changes myself such as adding a handler for
the Power Off event and suppressing the attempts by the script to
display what it’s doing on the Squeezebox’s display.

The one issue that I was not able to resolve other than through brute
force was to update our web site when the Squeezebox had either stopped
or was turned off. This is possible by using the CLI, but I have no
knowledge in that area right now, so my brute force method is simply to
check the Squeezebox every five minutes (with another task and script)
to see if it’s either stopped or off.

Here’s the finished product. Hopefully, we’re playing something
interesting if and when you have a look:

http://www.theheals.org/jon/squeezebox_status.asp

In the ZIP file below, I’ve included all of the files for this status
monitor in case anyone else wants to play with them. This is a
Microsoft IIS/ASP/VBScript-based project.

*UPDATE_SLIMSERVER_STATUS.vbs*: This is the main script that loads the
“status” XML, extracts the needed data, inserts the data into a much
simplified XML structure, posts the XML to our web site, and then FTPs
the current cover image. It's scheduled to run at system startup and
just sits there otherwise until called upon.

*UPDATE_NONPLAYING_STATUS.vbs*: This script notifies our web site if
the Squeezebox has either stopped or is off. It runs from a scheduled
task every five minutes.

*LAUNCH_UPDATE_TASK.vbs*: This script instructs the Task Scheduler to
run the UPDATE_SLIMSERVER_STATUS.vbs script immediately.

*Execute.pm*: My modified version of KDF’s script (1.7) for SlimServer
6.2.x that includes an extra event to listen for: Power OFF and also
changes 1) to listen for the Play event, and 2) activate the script on
initialization. KDF has a different version of the script for
SlimServer 6.5.

On our web site:

*now_playing.xml*: The XML file that contains data about

[slim] Artwork breaks Slimserver in Firefox; not Internet Exporer

2006-04-02 Thread dickmc

Have Slimserver 6.2.1-5194 with Fishbone running in Firefox 1.05.01 and
Internet Explorer 6.0.28. All ran fine until rescanned music, now IE
working fine but all graphics broken in Fishbone on Firefox. Also
broken are even the little red graphics to load playlists, etc. Have
tried refreshing window and clearing Firefox cache, restarting, default
skin, etc. etc. but no joy. Have about 80 albums and 1000 songs in a
naked Music directory. Am not running iTunes or MusicMatch or any of
that stuff. Also both Fishbone, Firefox and Internet Explorer were all
working fine before including “Browse Artwork”!

1. First issue was a few weeks ago when the yellow
Home/ServerSettings/Help at the top of Fishbone in Firefox
disappeared. Messed around refreshing, etc. but no joy until cleared
Firefox cache and the yellow links magically reappeared.

2. Present issues started when cleared and rescanned music after making
some minor artwork changes to cover.jpg’s while using Fishbone and
Firefox.

a.) First symptom: All albums and songs, etc. scanned properly.
However, when “Browsing Artwork” one album had disappeared.

b.)Second symptom: Cleared and rescanned music. Again all albums
scanned properly, but Artwork Browse had now misassigned two album
covers. For example: assume Broccoli, Carrot, Nut, and Melon are all
albums with cover.jpg artwork. However, on “Browse Artwork” Carrot has
a Broccoli cover and Nut has a Melon cover. However, if you click on
Carrot which has the misplaced Broccoli cover, Carrot opens with proper
Carrot artwork. Same thing with Nut which has the wrong cover in
“Browse Artwork” but opens with a proper Nut cover when clicked on.
Moreover, in the “Browse Artwork” if you let the mouse pointer rest on
the Nut album with the wrong Melon artwork, the link is to the Nut
album. Cleared Firefox cache, refresh, etc. but no joy.

c.)Third symptom: Now I dig the hole a lot deeper in the typical human
theory that if something is somewhat broken, play with it some more
till you really break it!! Cleared and rescanned music. Albums, etc.
appear to properly scan. However, the little red symbols to add songs
or albums to play list, etc are now gone from visibility even from the
album or song page in Firefox. However, if I run the mouse over where
they were, the links are still there. Moreover, all of the cover.jpg’s
in “Browse Artwork” are completely gone, nothing but black squares, but
with links if you run the mouse pointer over them. Tried restarts,
cache clears, refreshes, etc. but no joy. Internet Explorer however is
still humming away fine with none of the Firefox issues! BTW, only one
Slimserver is running.

*
I don’t think this is a Fishbone issue as Internet Explorer is still
showing everything fine.

Has anyone else had this problem?
Is there some place else in Firefox that stores a cache to clear? …how
to get at it?

Is there any point in trying to manually clear the scan music file?
How do I do that without risking breaking more things like Internet
Explorer which is still fine with none of the issues in Firefox?

What does a music scan really do? For example, I have from time to
time changed a cover.jpg but the artwork will not change until the
music is rescanned.

Ideas?
Thanks

but the mac remotes and an RCA tv remote don't generate any such lines.

[slim] Re: Throw away your computer - ReadyNAS as music server

2006-04-02 Thread funkstar

You also cannot transcode any non-native formats to play on the device
either. After much considderation this made me decide to pass on the
ReadyNAS and go for a real server instead (which i've also used for a
PVR/HTPC). At the moment i'm using AlienBBC for BBC radio stations, but
will be using a USB DAB reciever once i get ariels sorted out.

Neither of these options are available on the ReadyNAS

[slim] Re: slimserver losing playlists

2006-04-02 Thread pablolie

..M3U playlists have been broken for a while, I was surprised there was
no more uproar about it. It seems to me many people in this forum have
such an emotional connection to the SQB that they ignore the
idiosynchrasies - when I reported the broken M3U lists, the automatic
assumption was it was my setup that didn't work.

I think the playlist aspects of the SQB needs to be rock solid until
the device really lives up to its potential, and yes, it should be a
huge priority when it comes to fixes.

I love the SQB sound and build quality, but until the playlist aspect
and its compatibility with WMP has been ironed out I think it does
represent an unacceptable compromise. The occurrence of a bug like that
is what separates a world class consumer product from a promising toy,
in my opinion.

That error appears to be a data execution error message - very odd.

I would try uninstalling Slimserver completely - maybe using a third
party uninstaller than the built in one (there are lots you can try
free for a short period - I use System Mechanic 6 which has loads of
features including a powerful uninstaller). Make sure Slim.exe isn't
appearing in Processes of your Task Manager. Purge the Recycle Bin and
power down and then back up. Then try reinstalling 6.2.2.

[slim] Re: Customize Fishbone

2006-04-02 Thread evanhood

KDF, thanks for the code changes. For going to the current song, that
worked like a champ (even though the existing code seems to have
changed, using the latest nightly 6.5 build)

Little confused on the changing of the height for the play/add/etc
buttons. You mention the browsedb_list file and in searching there
isn't that file in the fishbone directory. Doing some more digging
there is that file in a couple other folders and I changed some values
and tested but can't seem to get anything to change. Does the fishbone
skin refer to html files in other folders as well?

Last thing, trying to have a party and have people add songs to the
playlist is a nightmare because eventually someone has enough adult
beverages that they forget to NEVER click play and they wipe out the
playlist, which upsets everyone else who added to my saved playlist.
Can I either remove the play button entirely or change it so that it
adds files to the end of the playlist without clearing everything?

Thanks again for all your help, and for all the work you've put into
what is IMO the best slimserver skin out there.

2006-04-02 Thread Siduhe

You can only access the podcast browser from the player, not from the
web interface, and only when slimserver is running - not from
SqueezeNetwork.

Plugins / Podcast Browser (although you can move this up to the top
level if you want). There are two podcast alley links to get you
started, or you can add additional links from the plugins menu on the
web interface.

If you have specific podcasts in mind, you may prefer to use an
automatic podcast downloader like Doppler or Juice and have these added
to your Music Library direct. If you have the automatic rescan setting
enabled, it means they just appear without you having to look for them.

yes, many changes in 6.5. Probably more to come, and I'll certainly
start taking a look at other skins to merge in any redundant blocks.

Does the fishbone
skin refer to html files in other folders as well?

for much of the recent changes, you want to look in EN, and not just
Fishbone directory. Thanks to the Template Toolkit and CSS changes,
much of the EN, Default and Fishbone skins have been blended into
common templates in the EN directory. Every template falls back to EN
if not found in the skin dir. cmdwrappers handle wrapping common urls
with skin-ed layout framework.

Can I either remove the play button entirely or change it so that it
adds files to the end of the playlist without clearing everything?

should be a matter of removing the PROCESS cmdlink section from the
playlink BLOCK in EN/cmdwrappers

or, in Fishbone/cmdwrappers_fishbone, add [% BLOCK playlink %][% END %]

to change it, just copy the addlink block from EN and put it in the
cmdwrappers_fishbone as playlink.

that should make it disappear, though you will want to make sure you
have cleared any caches if it doesn't disappear immediately.

[slim] Re: Thinking of buying/building linux based music server...

2006-04-02 Thread lnxguru

I can't add much about hardware requirements -- P II or better and 128MB
RAM is _more_ than enough for most home set ups. You don't have to start
with a huge hard drive if you use LVM but it is usually better to go
with fewer drives from a power/heat perspective. And to repeat earlier
advise -- do not depend on RAID for protection. I use DVDs for backup
and have been looking into USB 2.0 drives.

If you want to practice your Linux skills you could use telnet/ssh for
command line or consider using a remote X server. Cygwin and
Hummingbird(commercial) have X servers for Windows. The power and RAM
you'll need for this will depend on what else you're going to do with
this box but you won't need any monitor/mouse/keyboard attached.

Just some thoughts,

values were removed or I'm just blind.

Any other hints as to what and/or where I could modify the size of the

[slim] Re: Problem With Checked Songs

2006-04-02 Thread KevinW

timmorris thnaks for the response.

My problem is that the uncheck songs in ITune check box will not stay
the way I want it - I want to display songs that are not checked. I
rip using ITunes and use lossless.

As far as my characterization of SS, I think it is about right. The
problem is that it is not reliable. I hold my breath every time I use
it. Often it will not respond or there will be a significant delay in
it responding. Having it open on two browsers seems to be asking for
trouble. Sometimes it does not show all the CDs and I need to rescan.
To me it just has the feel of a temperamental program. It is certainly
not robust. When it works, which it usually does, I have no problem
with it - although I don’t like browser based apps.

Clearly, the very forum we are communicating in is a testament to the
number of problems that users have. While no doubt some are
attributable to user error there are far to many not to assign some
fault to the program itself. Part of the problem, as you may know, is
that there is a tremendous variety on the Windows side as to both
hardware and software. A SS that works fine on your machine may not
work on mine because in the background I am running MSDE and Hamachi
and your not.

I would urge SD to either put resources into improving SS or write a
small fast app for doing the basic displaying and playing. I would be
willing to pay for such an app.

I also have issues when it comes to indexing music. I listen to a lot
of classical. I have three versions of Mahler’s Second Symphony which
is 2 discs each. There is no easy way I have found to keep this
straight. (I am not blaming SS for this). In sum I think there is a
lot to be improved upon. Most posts seem to think SD needs to upgrade
the hardware, I think the need is much greater on the software side.

I did a couple of more trials. Somewhere between the time I start the

I just want to be able to, say... play the next album after listening

Make sense?

2006-04-02 Thread tyler_durden

The problem is inherent with vacuum fluorescent displays. One person
has complained, but the product is new. In a year or two from now,
everyone's display will be fading/burned. Look at any VCR with a
vacuum fluorescent display. In a year or so they fade. In 5 years you
can't read them any more.

The real issue is whether it's worth bothering about. In 5 years SB3s
will be obsolete, antique, nearly useless junk, like every other
computer device. The networking will be obsolete and slow and maybe
not compatible with the UWB wireless that will be replacing 802.11g.
The wired networking will be too slow because wired networks will be
Gbit, if anyone is using wired networks... You'll want the thing to
stream HD video to your wall size TV.

The display will last long enough for 99.9% of everyone who buys one
now because they'll replace it with whatever is new and cool in a year
or two.

In the meantime, I dim the display and run a news ticker or turn the
display off when the unit is off.

I was listening to some fast Chemical Brothers stuff yesterday.

I was averaging over 35 kph, reaching 40 kph. I sustained that for 16
minutes, 10 km.

Needless to say, quite a workout.

But I'm really starting to like exercising while listening to the
Squeezebox. Gets me in shape and gives me some quality time with my
favourite toy. I like Random Mix - what's it going to play next?

That's not embarassing though. I have some stuff just because I like
it but I'd rather not have anyone else know. :-)

[slim] Re: Throw away your computer - ReadyNAS as music server

2006-04-02 Thread slimjim

I have ReadyNAS NV and tried slimserver on it. It works but you cannot
add any additional plug-ins (it comes with LastFM plugin).

It is also quite noisy -- noisy enough not to place it in a media room.
My media PC with 5 hard drives and 4 fans (CPU, power supply, inlet,
and outlet fan) makes much less noise. IMO, Infrant really need to
solve the noise issue.

Re: [slim] 96 kbps mp3 won't play on my Slimp3

2006-04-02 Thread Bruce Tucker
Thanks for checking. I'll search for known bugs tomorrow. Maybe others
with Slimp3s or SBs could check too to see if this (Live365) stream is a
problem for everyone. I know there are other streams that don't work for me
too (I wonder if they are all 96kbps). I'll pass on a few of these others
that don't seem to be working and maybe if you have time you could see if
they play for you.

Hey Bruce,

Yeah, something seems to be going on with at least that stream. I can't
play it on my SliMP3 or my SB3. Server says this:

2006-04-02 19:33:19.6865 stream not readable

I'm using the 6.5 branch too. Might be time to file a bug or search for an
existing bug for these streams.

I have a VCR from 1996 whose display has dimmed, but is still perfectly
legible.

I have a microwave from 1998 whose display is at least as legible.

[slim] Re: SB3 stopped working - (long)

Well my problem goes away as soon as I switch to WEP 64 bit. It seems
that the SB2 is having a problem staying connected to my Motorola
Surfboard 900 with WPA encryption. I've contacted Slimdevices tech
support and they only said 'h, that's odd.'. Hopefully they
will get a Surfboard in the shop and troubleshoot. Looks like I'm
doomed to WEP until then.

[slim] Re: SlimServer does not start

2006-04-02 Thread khuongkt

It seems I have run into another problem. I'm not sure if the problem
lies with SlimServer or Softsqueeze, but on certain .WAV tracks the
output from my notebook has accelerated speed, like if someone had
messed with audio editing. I'm sure you've heard it before: the vocals
take on a high-pitched tone, and it makes you laugh. For the record,
these .WAV files were recorded by me from DVDs (though one of them
plays fine). The MP3s I tested play fine. I have not changed any
settings that I'm aware of.

Does any one have any explanations for this? I will use FLAC for my
real music library, though.

Thanks.

The output from your notebook? What are you playing it back with?

What sample rate are the DVD tracks? The Squeezebox can play 44.1 and
48 kHz files. It cannot play back 96 kHz material - it leads to
playback speed problems, exactly like you state.

There's a lot of 96 kHz material on music DVDs.

You might want to give TightVNC a try, it sports some performance
improvements over the original ATT version.

Also, your howto seems to improperly characterize VNC. Perhaps I'm
mis-reading but you seem to imply that the VNC viewer and server trade
packets continuously regardless of activity. That isn't the case, they
only trade packets when there are events to share (such as mouse
movements or screen updates). An idle VNC session uses no bandwidth.

Additionally, you indicate that a VNC context is limited in size and
pixel depth to the specs of the video card attached to the server
hosting it. This is not the case, VNC contexts can be of arbitrary
dimesions and quantity regardless of any video hardware that may or may
not be attached to the hosting computer (given enough memory, of
course).

One possible exception would be if a user was using VNC to share screen
0, but that's not a common use and certainly not appropriate for the
scenario you describe in your howto.
