Bee Wrote: can somebody give the rule for knowing the maximum of concurent streams with one server (Intel IMac for example) over a 100BT ethernet, with mp3 files (256kbps) ... or other configurations ? Well, at the top end: a 100Mbps LAN should give you about 50Mbps of usable throughput, so divide 50,000 by 256 to get 195 theoretical streams. Other bottle necks include the capacity of your hard disc to deliver bits (should be more than 50Mbps so not the limit) and the ability of your slimserver to keep up (which will probably be the limiting factor in practice - so depends on processor speed, system memory and other tasks running). This of course is assuming no transcoding on the server side. This is a long way of saying there is probably no magic formula which will tell you what you really want to know. Why not say how many you were thinking of, and see if anyone can offer evidence of matching that? There was also a thread a while ago on how many streams people had managed, and I seem to remember the answer was tens. Hi, I have got some rooms being rebuilt (eg kitchen/bathroom) where I may not want to see the SB3 (yes I know this sounds crazy!) but rather run from PC using ceiling speakers. Thanks for the replies. I found an FAQ on the BBC website where they clearly state that they only support their own player or Real. I think it also had a pretty dud reason why. So, I emailed them asking politely whay they do this and that they are missing out on a new and fast growing community of people using SlimDevices, Roku etc. I also read another posting about commercial stations want to keep people reading their online adverts (or should that be Real's adverts) but this also does seem to be a particulalrly valid reason as I would have to assume that people listening to their on-air advertising is more important. Before I even got my SB3, I had ripped a bunch of files to mp3 in itunes. (I know there are better formats/better ripping progams, but that's what I did.) The songs played fine on itunes. I moved them to the computer that I am using for the SB server and initially they played fine on sb3. Now all of a sudden they won't play at all on itunes or on sb3. (they cause the sb3 to crash.) When I try to play them in windows media player (WMP), I get a message saying the file you are attempting to play has an extension that does not match the file format. Playing the file may result in unexpected behavior. Do you want the Player to play the file? When I click yes on that WMP can't play the file because WMP may not support the file type or support the codec that was used to compress the file. Any ideas? error correction and protocol overhead. You will *never* get 100mbit of through put on a 100mbit network. The speed quoted is the wire speed as opposed to the data transfer speed. Gigabit gets round this to some degree by using jumbo frames. Basically this means that your data to overhead ratio is better as each frame being sent contains more data. -- funkstar funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24454 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Trying to add radio stations in particular BBC
the BBC went with Real years ago when there wasn't nearly the same interest in internet radio. There also wasn't the same bandwidth available or types of streaming formats available. Since then WMA has become a real alternative to Real (sorry) at the same data rates, MP3 would requite a higher data rate and is not adaptive (i.e. they drop down to a lower quality if your connection is slow/busy) like the other two are. At the time RealAudio was probably the best choice out there. I guess in the future they could move to another format, but this would mean introducing additional servers to support the streams and encoding etc. The WMA streams for the digital chanels are out sourced to a third party, the BBC does not stream them to you itself. I wouldn't be surprised if the BBC does move to a more open system eventually. -- funkstar funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24430 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'm curious why you don't expect 100Mb/second from your 100Mb/second Ethernet. Because Ethernet uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance to control traffic. No Ethernet can deliver its rated speed, even getting 50% of its rated speed is hard if not impossible if there is any sharing of the network. And then you have to add overhead, addressing, error correcting, ack/nak messages, etc. For a practical example for Slim users, a WiFi 'b' network is rated as 11 megabits/second but it rarely can actually delivery uncompressed audio. This is a problem for SB1 users, since the SB1 only does WiFi B, and can't do Flac on the fly The RedBook specifies that stereo music is to be recorded in 16-bit PCM sampled at 44.1 kHz. A little arithmetic shows that the data stream of CD audio must be at least: Data Rate = X = 16 bits * 2 channels * 44.1kHz = 16 * 2 * 44100 = 1,411,200 bits/second = 176,400 bytes/second = 172 Kbytes/second So while Red Book (or uncompressed audio) is only 1.4 mb/s and that is only 12% or so of a WiFi b link speed, you can't get it. [slim] Re: SB4 and/or a high-end model, when?
The idea of an audiophile SB to me is a non-starter. Why would an audiophile want a SB w/an integrated amplifier? Audiophiles shun integrated amplifiers, unless they are the ones that cost several thousand dollars. Adding a higher-end DAC to the SB also would be difficult, due to size constraints. Have you guys looked at audiophile-worthy DAC's? They are large, mainly due to gigantic (and probably unecessary) power supplies, transformer I/V stages, and sometimes tubes. Finally, and I've said this before in another thread, most of audiophilia is about constantly tweaking and changing your system. An all-in-one audiophile SB is a complete oxymoron IMHO. So, basically, true audiophile won't buy it, and those who are not audiophiles won't need it. I'm really not sure what the market for a $1000 SB would be. [slim] I built an in-wall cabinet for my Squeezebox
Well our master bathroom remodel is finally coming to a conclusion, more then 4 months in the making. It has a floor to ceiling steam shower, whirlpool tub and mood lighting so I needed to add another Squeezebox to play our tunes. Here are some pictures of the squeezebox cabinet. It fits inside the wall and has room for 3 remotes. I have a hardwired SB3, I didn't want to mess with wireless issues. The rest of the systems consists of a single dual tweeter dual voice coil Boston Acoustics DSI465T2. It's a nice sounding speaker that can play both channels from a single speaker. I decided to go with this because mounting two speakers didn't make sense in the bath. The system is powered by an AudioSource Amp200, 80 watts per channel probably overkill. I choose it because it has an auto on feature when it detects and input signal. Its mounted on top of the cabinet in the last picture. The room isn't finished, still needs painting and a long list of odds and ends. [slim] Re: How many streams at the same time ?
With 802.11b or g, yeah, I'd be happy with 50% of advertised bitrates, but the topic at hand is 100Base-TX (i.e. wired) Ethernet. Even with the preamble byte, the SFD byte, the source and destination MAC addresses, the frame type, and the checksum, you're still only talking about about 20 bytes of overhead per frame, which isn't much even with 100Base-TX's MTU size of 1500 (i.e. not the jumbo frames that Gb Ethernet often uses). None of that could possibly account for a 1:2 ratio between user data and Layer 1 data. And my experience bears this out. I normally see about 10.5 megabytes per second transfer rates on 100Base-TX links, which is quite close to 100 megabits per second. So my question to ceejay stands --I'm curious why he expects only 50 megabits per second from 100Base-TX. -- rudholm rudholm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2980 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24454 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
