Building huge playlists like that can certainly be slow. If you want a
shuffle on a big list of music, I'd suggest you look at erlands plugins
here http://erland.homeip.net/download (primarily DynamicPlaylist and
SQLPlaylist), which dynamically generates playlists in blocks of 10
tracks at a time. The performance is far better this way.

The Macsense HomePod has a USB port so you can connect an external
drive. http://www.macsense.com/product/homepod/

I bought one in early 2005, and it was horrible so I returned it and
got the Squeezebox. Never used it with an external drive while I had
it, and it looks like development has stagnated.

I ran for years on a P3-500 with 384 MB of ram. The later versions take
more, but I would expect a P3-750 with 512 to do well.

How difficult depends on a lot of things. Are you geeky at all?
Is the old computer a spare?

One possible approach is to start with the SlimServer on your main
desktop, and then use the old clunker to play with. That way you don't
care if it takes a day or a week.

If you use a "live CD" you can play with Linux without doing anything to
the hard disk. It will be slower than a real install, but that is
usually a worthwhile tradeoff. There is a Live CD with Slimserver, you
can load it and go.

Something like DSL-N would work well on an old box, and I think there is
even a SlimServer kit for it.

I strongly recommend not setting yourself up to get frustrated if it
doesn't work! right!! now!!! If you are new to Linux, just allow proper
time.

I would go for option 3. It's easy to set up - in fact, no setup at all
with SlimCD:
http://www.herger.net/slim/detail.php?nr=763&kategorie=slim

Or you could install Linux on it - Ubuntu went like a breeze on similar
hardware for me and SlimServer installed painlessly.

How much RAM does the old box have? That's probably more important
than the processor. At least 256 MB.

[slim] options setting up slim server

2006-10-10 Thread tucson5

I am just starting and am trying to figure out my options for using the
squeeze box. I see three options but wanted input on each. I have a
buffalo gigabit link station, 2 computers on a lan and 1 laptop with
wireless.

Options
1. slim server on desk top computer, music on NAS connected to LAN then
squeeze box.
Advantage, easy setup
Disadvantage: computer needs to be on for music
Slows down computer performance

2. slim server and music on NAS connected to LAN and then squeeze box
Advantage: works all the time
Disadvantage: more difficult to set up especially with newest
upgraded software
Questions: How difficult is this? I like projects like this, but have
never played with linux.

3. slim server on separate computer (old junky one) that is used solely

Advantage: always on
Disadvantage: have to hide computer so it is not eye sore and is

I really want access to the music at all times. I think this means
option 1 is out. I am finding it difficult to decide between 2 and 3.
What are others thoughts between 2 and 3?

Thanks

Anyway, I do think there's a market opportunity out there for someone building a SlimServer appliance -- it just needs to be a little beefier than the QNAP, from the sound of things. [slim] Re: splitList: "/"?

2006-10-10 Thread Brian Ritchie

I've been browsing to try to find the answer to this, but remain none
the wiser: could someone explain to me how the MULTIPLE ITEMS IN TAGS
box in the SS Settings/Behaviour page is supposed to work? (I'm running
a recent 6.5.1 nightly.)

The description on the page ("If SlimServer finds any of the words or
characters below in your tags, it will create individual listings for
each item") leads me to believe that if I set it to "/;" (without the
quotes), then SS will split whenever it finds a "/" *or* a ";" in a
tag. So for example, files with Artist set to "Andersen / Tsabropoulos
/ Christensen" would be listed under each of the three artists, and so
would "Andersen; Tsabropoulos; Christensen". However, I've just tried
this, and it didn't work (at least, not for "/"-separated artists).
Since each change induces an aeons-long rescan, I'm rather loathe to
experiment! (When I was using 6.2.2, I think that "/" on its own worked
OK, so I suppose I could try that again. One snag with upgrading SS is
having to recreate my settings from memory - or remembering to make
notes first...)

Am I allowed multiple alternative separators, or is the string being
treated as a single separator? If I were to put "Spice Girls" in the
box, would that ban them from my collection? (I can but hope! But I
fear that it might do strange things to anything with either Spice or
Girls in it.) Are there any secret reserved characters, of which "/"
happens to be one?

Quite a few people don't WANT to have to dedicate a "modern machine" to
SlimServer. They want it running on a NAS-type machine. I've got a
600MHz VIA C3 with 120MB available physical RAM that I use for NAS.

I know very well what "old" and "slow" machines are capable of, and
you'd be surprised. SlimServer should not be as sluggish as it
currently is on this machine.

Some of what people have said above seems to indicate that MySQL will
lead to a performance increase on this machine. If so, that's great.
Perl itself might be the next culprit to look at -- and why the heck
SlimServer is chewing up SO much RAM.

Funny, I came here to make a post asking if there's any way to improve
performance on low-end machines. Hitting "play" on a directory with a
few hundred files in it (say I want to listen to a shuffle of all my
alternative music, or whatever) is absolutely glacial on my even more
lowly 600MHz VIA Eden CPU (vaguely comparable to a 350MHz original
Celeron, or so I've heard). The Squeezebox freezes hard for like 15
seconds until SlimServer can get itself together to build the playlist
and start servicing UI requests again.

I really hope future releases will address low-end performance, as I
suspect that a fair portion of users are running SlimServer on NAS type
boxes that aren't exactly powerhouses. And those users tend to be the
type that submit bug reports and patches and get things improved, I'd
wager.

Andy,

A couple of questions re: buffer fullness setting:
1) on SB3, I see spectrum analyzer staying on when buffer fullness is
selected? is this expected behaviour
2) should I see buffer fullness displayed in a softsqueeze player? I
don't currently

Thanks

The idea of having only one or two computers in a house is too weird for

A SlimServer box can skip the video card, fancy case, lights, etc.
No need for a DVD burnder, etc. Just use any old CPU and a half gig or
more of RAM, and be done.

Plus it gives you more reasons to install Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, etc
over top of evil Windows.

Re: [slim] Re: Now Playing button...

2006-10-10 Thread kdf

how about..

add this (or similar) to IR/Custom.map

[common]
now_playing = menu_PLUGIN.MusicInfoSCR

of course, that only gets you into the plugin mode. there isn't any
support for directly entering a screensaver mode, so the plugin would
have to be changed so that the plugins mode was also the screensaver
mode instead of the "use this screensaver" setting.

Other possible solution, but also requires support/changes from
Michael, would be to create a function in the plugin to immediately
enter screensaver mode. Let's call it "savernow". Then in custom.map

[common]
now_playing = modefunction_PLUGIN.MusicInfoSCR->savernow

that should work.

I don't know why I should need a dedicated machine, really. I've noproblem running slimserver 6.5 with samba, apache, another MySQL instance,mail... on the same two year old Via C3/1GHz with 512MB ram. That machine

I gotta agree with this. I look at the slimserver user on my server, and it's using 150 MB of RAM and 2 percent average of the CPU, for all of its services put together. During a scan, CPU use goes up to 20% or so for about fifteen minutes (almost 14,000 tracks). It's the most important service on the box, aside from low-impactors like routing, firewalling, squid, and openvpn.
For comparison's sake, Firefox is using about the same amount of memory and CPU on my XP laptop with 7 open tabs. -- "I spent all me tin with the ladies drinking gin,So across the Western ocean I must wander" -- traditional

[slim] phantom tracks reappearing

2006-10-10 Thread jeffluckett

I have been going through my music library and clearing out the 'crap'
that's accumulated after about 8 years of collecting digital music.
(Low bitrate stuff, partial songs, "why did I download that?", etc...)
I've also done quite a bit of moving tracks around, since I've got a lot
of folders like "Beatles", and "Beatles,The" ... depending upon varous
tagging apps I've used over time.

Well after a marathon session with the "Delete" and cut/paste keys, I
told SlimServer do a Clear and Rescan ... twice. However, on
completion of the scan both times ... it still thinks some of the
things I deleted or moved are in the old locations! In some cases,
whole directories have been completely deleted by me ... but SS thinks
they're still there.

What do I need to do to get SlimServer to REALLY forget about
everything it knew about my library and load it all fresh?

I'm using 6.5.0 on Win2k3.

I'd bet most of the issues asking for a dedicated machine are due to
some  other influence.

Warning: "dedicated machine" is a loaded phrase.
There are two reasons that cause vendors to use this phrase:
1) to ensure that there is enough capacity to have "good" response.
2) to ensure that no other product's requirements don't conflict with
some obscure requirement of this product.

Both of these drive at the heart of the word "support" as in "Oracle
only supports X" or "To use XYZ accounting package, you need Y for support"

In simple english, it is a lot easier for Tech Support (for any vendor)
to support a dedicated machine. And for a lot of non-techical users, it
is easier for the customer as well.

The latest Mandriva distro, 2007, seems to have aimed at the naive
consumer so much that they have broken some "standard" development
tools. Does this mean that you can't use Mandriva 2007 and SlimServer?
no, just that it isn't as easy as it was with Mandriva 10.1, which was
easier than Mandriva 2006.

I had a friend get Windows XP working on a 233mHz machine with 96MB. It
was dog slow, but it ran. For me, anything under 512MB is unacceptable
for XP, and more CPU is always better. But what I want, and what is
possible are separate things.

Sometimes it is easier to "manage" and "support" simplier
configurations. That doesn't mean you can't do it if you are adventurous.

Just checked in some rebuffering code. It won't solve the problem, but

If 6.5.1 wouldn't start that may be because of plugin problems (there
have been some issues with some versions of plugins crashng
slimserver). Before you leap to the conclusion that its slimserver's
fault, try eliminating plugins, or look at the error log while starting
up.

Multiple genres with a ; delimiter worked for me in 6.5.0 and the 6.5.1
I am using now, so some more investigation may be called for...

Don't forget to do a full clear and rescan of your library...

Correction. It's actually Slimserver grouping them together and saying
they are by 'the string used to denote a compilation album'.

e.g. by default

Stiltskin-Inside by Various Artists from Rock Anthems.

If I change the compilation string (server

displayed as

Stiltskin-Inside by Compilation from Rock Anthems.

What do I have to do to get it to display correctly (as it was in 6.3)
as

Inside by Stiltskin from Rock Anthems?

(The reaon I was confused before was that the album-artists in my MP3
tags is set to 'Various Artists' for all compilation albums)

Thanks

I already run Apache on my SlimServer machine, as well as MySQL, so the

What becomes increasingly evident is that running SlimServer on

I think the fact that scan times improved with MySQL might not mean
that MySQL was needed. It could also be evidence that there was
something wrong with SS. I too have my doubts that PERL is the right
choice for SS.

I really don't see why a full-blown transactional db back-end should be
needed, even with tens of thousands of tracks.

I agree, buying more SBs would be a no-brainer if not for SS. SS is
clearly the weak link in the whole SB proposition --the UI, the db, the
performance...perhaps it's time for a complete re-do guys...

I know you guys love hardware (and, kudos, it really shows in the
product) and the current SS is already developed, but if it were my
money, I'd be taking a long hard look at slimserver.

I think Slimpy is right. I just hunted down some information about the
standard tags used in an MP3 file. According to this site (link below),
there is a way to embed a picture file into an MP3. However, there does
NOT appear to be a standard way to provide a pointer or link to an
externally stored picture. I believe that the concept of putting your
picture file in the same folder as the MP3 is a Slim Devices-only idea.
Hence, other MP3 players wouldn't be able to see the album art if it
wasn't embedded.

Here's a link:

http://www.id3.org/frames.html

I'm still doing a bit of research to figure out how iTunes handles
album art. It can definitely see the image embedded in a MP3. But it
also seems to have its own method for pointing to an image file. If I
learn more I will post here.

[slim] How To Control Initial Scan?

2006-10-10 Thread Neil Cameron
Fed up with all the recent problems, I decided to remove and reinstall from
scratch.
Having done so, and launched Slimserver for the 'first' time, it is off and
scanning before it launches the interface - which follows some 20 mins later
after it has scanned. BUT I wanted it to use the iTunes database! What a
waste of time. And now it will have to rescan. Can't the new install be
programmed ask this key question before it rushes off scanning?

No, I'm saying that giving requested feedback on a current nightly build
is an order of magnitude more useful than feedback on the previous release.

Consider the case where the devs aren't certain what's causing your
problem, and can't replicate it themselves. They think the problem might
have been solved by the current beta. Unless you install the beta and
are still seeing the problem, there's a pretty good chance that no
further work will be done on your problem. In that scenario, you're
basically stuck waiting until 6.5.2 is released to see a fix. And
historically, x.y.2 releases of Slimserver take much longer to come out,
if they ever do, than x.y.1 releases do.

If, on the other hand, you do try the beta and can confirm that the
problem still exists, then the devs will keep working on it and it might
actually get fixed in 6.5.1.

I've got a similar problem where I select Random Album Mix, and it
starts playing a random album, but no additional albums are added to
the list automatically. I also recall it working correctly shortly
after I installed, but now it simply stops playing anything after the
first random album is finished. Here's the relevant part of my
d_plugin log:

Prevent Standby plugin: client Local in playmode play
Prevent Standby plugin: setting thread execution state
Prevent Standby plugin: starting timer
RandomPlay: Play button pushed on type album
RandomPlay: playRandom called with type album
RandomPlay: 13 songs remaining, songIndex = 0
RandomPlay: Starting random selection of 1 items for type: album
RandomPlay: Find returned 1 items
RandomPlay: Playing album: One Second, 1916
RandomPlay: Playing static album mode with 12 items
Prevent Standby plugin: client Local in playmode play
Prevent Standby plugin: setting thread execution state

Prevent Standby messages continue to print, but no RandomPlay messages
ever reappear.  Any ideas?

[slim] Tag info. displays Album Artists not Artist

2006-10-10 Thread Kevin Weller
I've just upgraded to SS6.5. I thought I'd uninstall 6.3 first as I
haven't done a clean install for a while - big mistake! I thought it
would leave the settings file as is but it doesn't and I'm still trying
to get all the setings back as they were.

When I was running 6.3, tracks from compilation albums were correctly
displayed as TRACK by ARTIST from album. Since upgrading to 6.5 they
are now being displayed as ARTIST-TRACK by ALBUM-ARTIST from ALBUM,
e.g. Stiltskin-Inside by Various Artists from Rock Anthems. That's also
what SlimScrobbler is putting on LastFM which is obviously not what I
want.

Any idea what I had ticked to make it display the correct tag
information?

[slim] Re: stream keeps stuttering

2006-10-10 Thread andyg

One thing you may want to try in combination with the buffer fullness is
to play with the "Radio Station Buffer Seconds" value. It will
pre-buffer more of the stream before beginning playback. When set to
30 seconds the buffer fullness value for your station is at 10% instead
of 4%. This means any network drops will have a less chance of causing
any audio dropouts. Of course, too many network problems will still
cause problems.

Yeah it's a player setting. In SlimServer go to Player Settings for
 -> Basic Settings page -> Now Playing Information, select Show
Buffer Fullness. A percentage display will appear in the upper-right
where the time usually is. It will report the amount of data in the
buffer. Live radio should show about 4%. I expect in your case you'll
see it drop to 0% when it stutters.

You can check to see that the lame process isn't running. Set Player

Andy,

since 6.5 i have found that the problem can take anywhere from just a
few minutes to close to an hour, (when using the SB with SS).

as i wrote this post, it took 40min to occur.

it could also be that the vagaries of my net connection cloud route are
different from yours, as i'm in central Pa, while you're in Pitts.
(where i am, "adelphia" is becoming comcast fyi).

is "the buffer fullness display from Player Settings" a SERVER setting
or a LOCAL PLAYER setting?

what category is the setting under?

i don't see anything resembling it under player settings. under server
settings, network heading, i see "RADIO STATION BUFFER SECONDS" and mine
is set to 3 seconds, as opposed to a percent.

is this what you meant?

also i had another thought...

could it be the "lame quality level" under player settings?

mine is set to 0 but it was b4 6.5 too, without problem. and isn't
this a server function anyway? why is it under player settings?

does it even come into play if the stream is already mp3? meaning, is
it for transcoding ONLY, or ALSO decoding mp3? i assumed this was for
streaming music FROM my SS out to others on the net only.

bpa,

if i have to i'll DL and install that program, but i have no exp with
it nor did i really want to take on a new learning project to get this
fixed. but, if i have to, i will.

btw, my router/SB is setup to be wireless, and SB has 100% strength.
the router connects to my motorola cable modem. the router has the
latest firmware, and is setup to pass multicast stuff, ...i try to make
it wide open. the cable modem is older, maybe a docsis 1.0, i'm not
really sure, but its good as far as i can tell. my computer connects
to the router via ethernet wire.

marc,

are you saying feedback on released programs is useless and the only
valid feedback that will enable changes to the next release is on beta
software? b/c that just isn't true. and from what i understand, 6.5.1
will be released very soon, so i prefer to wait. i just don't like beta
software, never have, and generally just don't use it.

thx all -mdw

[slim] Re: Looking for Good Info on Album Art Downloading

2006-10-10 Thread shabbs

Here's my "Album Artwork" setup if it helps:
- Each album is in a seperate folder in my overall heirachy
- I create two artwork files in each folder:
--> folder.jpg (200x200 pixels)
--> albumartsmall.jpg (75x75 pixels)
- I embed the folder.jpg image as Album Art inside each MP3 using
Tag&Rename.

SS then uses the folder.jpg image as the "large image" when looking at
the album info in the SS web interface. It uses albumartsmall.jpg as
the "thumbnail" image when browsing the albums gallery. I think the
embedded image is displayed in the "now playing info" in the web
interface as the track is played.

I manually downloaded all my album artwork from web sites like
amazon.com/music, allmusic.com, allofmp3.com and search on
images.google.com when I can't find it on a music site.

Hope that helps.

Cheers.

I like the idea of embedding the cover art in the mp3. Yes, it's a
slight waste of space, but it seems the most elegant solution. Since I
use a 200x200 pixel image, it's usually only 8-12 kb.

I really wish FLAC had standard support for embedded art.

2006-10-10 Thread Mark Lanctot

Disabling SSID has been hit and miss for me with the SB3.

The way I find that works:

- enable SSID, find it and connect

- once connected, disable SSID

The Squeezebox should still find the AP without you having to do
anything.

I find that disabling SSID at the start, then entering it in and having
it look for it didn't always work.

Of course, disabling SSID won't help with security and just serves to
break things. The SSID is broadcast using more than one mechanism,
you're just disabling the most obvious one. If someone wants your
SSID, they can still find it without too much trouble. It's sent
unencrypted using several methods even with SSID broadcast disabled and
WPA or WPA2 encryption.

[slim] Re: iTunes7, SS6.5, & Volume Adjustment

2006-10-10 Thread barcar

No warranty given or implied - this is a (potentially painful)
destructive process on your iTunes library...

Here's some JavaScript to parse your iTunes library and dispaly tracks
with a VolumeAdjustment (SoundCheck) value:

Code:

var ITTrackKindFile = 1;
  var iTunesApp = WScript.CreateObject("iTunes.Application");
  var mainLibrary = iTunesApp.LibraryPlaylist;
  var tracks = mainLibrary.Tracks;
  var numTracks = tracks.Count;
  var i;

  while (numTracks != 0)
  {
  var currTrack = tracks.Item(numTracks);

  // is this a file track?
  if (currTrack.Kind == ITTrackKindFile)
  {
  // yes, does it have a volume adjustment?
  if (currTrack.VolumeAdjustment != 0)
  {
  WScript.Echo(currTrack.name + " (" + currTrack.VolumeAdjustment + ")");
  }
  }

  numTracks--;
  }

and here's some slightly different JavaScript to actually clear this
data out of your iTunes library:

Code:

var ITTrackKindFile = 1;
  var iTunesApp = WScript.CreateObject("iTunes.Application");
  var mainLibrary = iTunesApp.LibraryPlaylist;
  var tracks = mainLibrary.Tracks;
  var numTracks = tracks.Count;
  var i;

  while (numTracks != 0)
  {
  var currTrack = tracks.Item(numTracks);

  // is this a file track?
  if (currTrack.Kind == ITTrackKindFile)
  {
  // yes, does it have a volume adjustment?
  if (currTrack.VolumeAdjustment != 0)
  {
  WScript.Echo(currTrack.name + " (" + currTrack.VolumeAdjustment + ")");
  currTrack.VolumeAdjustment = 0;
  }
  }

  numTracks--;
  }

Hope that helps. I guess I should have done it in Perl but that would
have taken me a lot longer...

I have upgraded to 6.5.1 and iTunes 7.0.1, running Mac OSX 10.4.8. Ten
percent of my music, about 80 albums, is labelled as "No Genre" in

The problem was the same with SS 6.5.0.

Someone mentioned having success with upgrading to 6.5.1 running on
Windows. But the Mac is maybe a different beast altogether?

Does anyone know what troubleshooting I should try?

Yes, I did do a rescan. I have a suspicion that what you're saying
might be true. If so, this might actually be an iTunes issue. I'd
love to figure out a way to clear these values, however.

You're missing a real opportunity to get this problem fixed if you're
not willing to install anything that isn't marked "release".

The whole point of a beta test is for users to try it out and report
problems before the release, to reduce the number of bugs in the
release. If you're not willing to try the open beta, you can't expect
the release to have fixed the bugs that you care about.

[slim] Re: iTunes7, SS6.5, & Volume Adjustment

2006-10-10 Thread slimpy

I don't use itunes but I understand that slimserver reads the itunes xml
file and uses that data to populate its own database. This means you
need to force a (clear &) rescan in slimserver to make the changes
visible.

[slim] iTunes7, SS6.5, & Volume Adjustment

2006-10-10 Thread Gildahl

In SS 6.5 I was (at first) happy to see that it now reads the sound
check values from iTunes. With sound check turned on, in SS if I look
at the info for the song, I will see a volume adjustment setting like
db-4.5, db3.0, etc. If I then turn on the Volume Adjustment by track
feature on my squeezebox, it obeys these volume settings. Cool.
Unfortunately, I don't like the effect.

So I turned off Sound Check in iTunes, in order to try using the volume
adjustment slider in iTunes on a couple tracks to see if manually
adjusting the volume might work better for me. Upon turning off sound
check (and reimporting) I would have expected to see all the db
settings (like db-4.5, db3.0, etc.) be reset to zero; however, they are
all still set to the soundcheck values! Consequently, I can't get a
clean slate upon which to apply my manual settings since all the tracks
still have their soundcheck values.

This seems like a bug, but before I report it as such, I was wondering
if I might be doing something wrong here.

Dave

Yes, you have to relocate them. There were some considerable changes in
6.5 regarding the handling of compilation albums and common album names.
In 6.3 you had to specify every album name that existed in your library
more than once, e.g. "Greatest Hits". If you didn't these albums were
treated as compilation albums. This was quite cumbersome and did not
follow common sense: Why should an album be treated as a compilation
only because there is another album with the same name by a different
artist. e.g I have three albums called "The Antidote" by three
different artists.
Slimserver now only treats albums as compilations if they have
different artists and the files are in the same directory.
This is only a problem for people who strictly follow the
/artist/album/song structure and even split up compilation albums. I
suggest you create an artist directory called "Various artists" and
regroup your compilation albums under this entry.

Another (unverified) solution you might want to try: Tag all
compilation tracks with the COMPILATION=1 tag. I'm not sure if this
works though as I haven't actually tried it. But telling slimserver
explicitely to treat these tracks as compilation could do the trick.

Slimpy - I understand what you are saying, and all of my compilation
tracks are in individual artist folders (and therefore repeated same
albums). It still does not explain why it worked in 6.3.1 but not
6.5.1. does this now mean I have to re-locate all compilation files...?

Are all songs from one compilation album in the same directory. They
need to be in order to be recognized as belonging to the same album.
If they are in different directories it isn't possible for slimserver
to tell if they belong to a compilation album or if they are just
different albums with the same name.

I've had this stream on for about 20 minutes without any problems.

Try enabling the buffer fullness display from Player Settings. Mine

[slim] Re: Duplicate Albums

2006-10-10 Thread repman

Having upgraded to version 6.5.1 I'm having the same issues reported
here with duplicate album names.
I have tried a complete un-install of SlimServer and deleting the
associated program directories, but still my complimation albums list
for each and every artist. ie 20 tracks = 20 albums
In 'Home/Server Settings/Behavior' I have selected 'Group complimation
albums together' although I'm not so sure what setting to use for the
following:
'Albums that contain songs that are tagged with a band may be listed
under that band name or with the other artists for that album. The band
tag is also known as TPE2 and may appear as the "album artist" in some
software'
My understanding is that the core artist name would be 'Various' an
that band is the Album Artist... Slimserver does not exactly make any
of this clear. Needless to say it all worked fine in 6.3.1

I use Tag&Rename for file management and my file format is entirely
flac, my directory structure is \artist\album\track.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

What cache? We're only talking about the Cache/FileCache folder here.
There are other subfolders for the html template or for the MySQL database
files or for some plugins.

I'm also running 10-06, using it daily. The file cache is 18M, while the
DB is at 45M (with about 7000 songs).

Oh dear.

I installed SlimServer_6.5_v2006-10-06.exe and left it running over the
weekend. I was away so SlimServer was not being used. However according
to the task tray SlimServer was not actually started.

When I came back, the cache was 430MB.

I did notice mysqld.exe running in my process list and taking up 15MB
memory, and I'm aware SlimServer uses that for the cache.

Re: [slim] Re: Slimserver 6.5 and MusicIP 1.7 getting along?

2006-10-10 Thread Michael Herger

Ok I'm still on MMM 1.5 and Slimserver 6.3.1. Should I upgrade to:
1.  MMM 1.6?
2.  Slimserver 6.5?

As I noted earlier: I've never had a better working MIP/Slimserver
combination than 1.7/6.5. BUT this seems to depend a lot on the operating
system you're running on. The issues I had were mainly related to
character encoding in tags and filenames. An issue which imho had been
adressed on Windows earlier than Linux.
