Re: [slim] Playing music with no computer turned on

2007-04-04 Thread Hamlet

Basicly you have two options:

1-Run Slimserver on a NAS, no computer required, and be prepared to
accept the limitations of relying on the NAS and whatever processing
power it has to run the SS, which is not it's primary function.

2-Admit to yourself that you are a power-user, and as such, running SS
on the NAS won't do. Then accept the idea of running it on a pc. For
whatever it's worth, everyone I know runs their pcs 24/7, even if it's
just to check e-mail whenever they want.

Good Luck

Re: [slim] Multi-Zone Whole-House Audio System

2007-04-04 Thread awy

How about an update on the progress of your project?

It looks like about a year since your original post, so maybe my
comments are too late,

I thought that your original plans did not look so bad. My experience
is that SoftSqueeze is pretty CPU hungry so I would probably look for
multi-core CPUs, or several really cheap PCs if you reall need so many
instances. You do not need 11 sound cards as multi-channel cards are
pretty common and cheap. My Creative Audigy SE 7.1 has 4 (5?) analogue
outputs that can be addressed independently and it is a reasonable
quality card.

With the setup you describe the real trick would be, instead of using
multiple instances of SoftSqueeze to drive each sound-card (or
channel), to (dynamically) manipulate the Linux sound-system drivers to
mix a single SoftSqueeze onto as many channels as you want synchronized.
Of course, this would need some significant software development to
manage it properly. My understanding of the various bits of the Linux
sound system (ALSA, JACK, ...) is not sufficient to work out just how
to do this (yet) but I'm quite sure that it is possible.

Did you consider using powered speakers - like PC speakers. There is a
huge range on the market and I'm sure that you could find something
appropriate for your needs for little money. I realise that they need
power but that should not be so much of an issue give the rest of the
project. Running line-level signals from the sound cards to the
speakers would require choice of good screened cable and, even so, it
is essential to find a cable route that keeps them away from sources of
interference (mainly mains cables) - I have had remarkably good results
with foil-screened Cat5e!

I started out with just SoftSqueeze and now have bought a pair of
SliMP3s; one in the lounge connected to the main amp/speakers, the
other in the (adjacent) kitchen. The one in the lounge was because,
good though it is and just fine for background music or internet radio
(the main use), the remote PC/sound-card/CAT5e/main-amp solution was
not quite good enough for serious music listening. Since having the
SliMP3 in place, we have come to appreciate the use of the remote, even
though a laptop from which the web interface can be used (or, more
often, SlimRemote), is usually to hand.

The kitchen SliMP3 has been built into the boarding above the cupboards
and looks great, with a pair of really cheap PC speakers behind the
ventialation grill elsewhere in the boarding, and with a wireless
ethernet bridge (all parts from eBay or the office for-sale board). In
this case the motivation was the impracticality of getting any wiring
to the kitchen. But again, we find the availability of the display and
the remote are really nice. Now the real problem is keeping
synchronization with the lounge - I am working on this (see posts
elsewhere in this forum) - but the
multiple-channels-from-a-single-SoftSqueeze approach that I outlined
above would eliminate this problem (except that I have the wiring
problem).

I intend to keep the faith with SoftSqueeze elsewhere: basement TV/play
room, laundry room and probably the cellar/workshop; all from the same
single sound card and using various qualities of PC/powered speakers.
But for the bedroom I definitely want a wireless SB so that it can be
controlled with the remote.

Alan.

Re: [slim] Funky Random PlayList's driving me nuts

2007-04-04 Thread Greg Erskine

hi mswlogo,

FYI, my random songs doesn't work as you describe. From the remote
and the web interface each time I press random songs a new list is
generated, with old ones removed. As each song plays another gets added
to the list.

The only unusal feature I notice, is when you stop slimserver when
you have a random song list active, the next time you start slimserver
is only cycles through the list rather an appending new songs. I just
hit random songs again.

You might want to program one of the remote buttons to select random
songs.

[slim] While I wait to get my SB3 - External Hard Drives

2007-04-04 Thread Arca

I was contemplating picking up a 500GB USB 2 external hardrive
(7200rpm,16mb buffer), but before I did, I want to be sure there are no
common problems.

Along the same lines, my computer goes into standby (S3), and I was
wondering if the SB3 can nudge it awake, and if that would cause any
difficulties with the external drive (like not being recognized). Just
want to be sure before I drop $150.00 on another drive.

Thanks in advance!

Some people have had problems with SlimServer not being able to find
music on external USB drives, but (as far as I know) it's always been a
permissions problem when running on a unixy-type box. It's certainly
fixable...

I have noticed my SB2 and SB3 occasionally say Waking up SlimServer

SlimServer box is an always-on, low-power Kurobox)

For a while, I used a Seagate 300Gb USB2 drive. There weren't any
functional problems with it - Slimserver didn't have a problems with
visibility etc. What I did notice, was that if the drive hadn't been
accessed for a while ( had presumably spun down), there was a
noticeable delay in loading playing the first track - 5 to 10 seconds
or so. You could also see this delay just by browsing to the disk in
Explorer - so it wasn't Slimserver. I don't know how they are sold now
- but there was no utility to control spin-down or wake-up times.

[slim] Debugging help re Vista m4a issue, please

2007-04-04 Thread Matt Shelton

Hi there. Ever since doing a clean install from XP SP2 to 32-bit Vista a
few weeks ago, I'm having major problems playing m4a files (95% of my
library), but no problems playing mp3 files. The m4a files either never
play or take 10 to 15 seconds to start playing after starting. On XP, I
never had even the slightest problem ever with Slimserver. I'm having
the identical problems now, be it SS 6.3.1, 6.5.1 or 6.5.2. I've also
installed the lastest socketwrapper per some threads I've seen here.
I've even tried to run all SS-related exe files in XP Compatability
mode, but no luck. I've also completely uninstalled and reinstalled
iTunes and Quicktime, and I've completely rescanned my library - all to
no avail.

I'm pasting in info re my debugging efforts: one for a mp3 file that
played successfully and one for a m4a file that did not play.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure which debug codes will show the best
information, but I've given it a good shot. I would greatly appreciate
it if someone could look at the debugging info to see if you can figure
out the issue! Thanks.

What socketwrapper are you using - I know you have tried a number but
for this debug log the version is important ?

Did you tell you security s/w (e.g. anti Virus, anti spyware, anti IM ,
firewall) that socketwrapper is a trusted app and allowed to network as
it pleases and eachtime you changed socketwrapper you re-entered the

Re: [slim] iTunes to sell DRM-free 256 kbps AAC

2007-04-04 Thread shvejk

I hope Slim Devices choses to support non-DRM ACC files.
Yes, they do, through transcoding. I'm wondering why this is such a
problem?

Good question. AAC is supported through transcoding. In a typical
SlimServer + SB scenario transcoding works well and there is no
problem.

AAC support in firmware is needed when you want to avoid transcoding.
For example when SlimServer is setup on a NAS or the music is stored
online ( Oboe Locker ). Someone could argue that these are very
specific scenarios and that number of users interested in the requested
enhancement is tiny. However, since both WMA and OGG support was added
to the firmware in the past, there is still hope that this will be
addressed in the future...

I know that you do not want to link iTunes to SlimServer, but have you
considered using the Unchecked Songs in iTunes feature under

To do this you would set the feature to Don't include unchecked songs

import.

Just a thought.

Aubuti what i mean by it does more is you can directly connect a pair
of speakers to the Sonos unit and it can connect a NAs storage device
or Netstorage device to the unit without it being a NAS and still
access the files. You can also connect ohher media devices to it ie; an
IPOD. My point here is not to argue the merit of one or the other it is
to try to find out as much as possible from a point of useage and
everyday maintenace the advantages and disadvantages of the Sqeezebox.

As I mentioned in the begining of this thread my aim was to run the
unit without a computer on 24/7. From what everyone has said in this
thread it can be done but you need a NAS or a PC on 24/7 to accomplish
this. I have also seen in other threads the different types of NAS
that are available and what is recommened. I have read threads from
installing the latest version of slimserver on a NAS to purchasing a
NAS with Slimserver preinstalled, this has all been very useful
information and will certainly help me in making my final decision on
the prodcut to buy and the type of storage.

After this I have seen messages in this thread about what is the
problem of having a pc on 24/7, I have never said there was a problem
with this but my preference is not to have one except for when i need
to use it.

Th only device I have seen on the market which can hold a candle next
to the Sqeezebox are the Sonos products but as I mentioned before they
cost twice as much.

Re: [slim] Browse Library - Genre questions

2007-04-04 Thread Club1820

Erland, your description is exactly what I am expecting to happen when
I browse Genre/Artist. List all the tracks for a given artist that
pertain to that given genre.

I figured out the problem though. It turns out that for the majority
of my tracks - I don't have the Album field entered. Since every
available way to sort the tracks involves Album, it then lists every
track that doesnt have an album if you choose an artist that doesnt
have that field populated.

Here is what it says if I choose an artist that doesnt have album info
on its tracks : 1 album and then it lists EVERY SINGLE TRACK that
doesnt have the album field populated in the Tag.

So, is there a way around this? Probably not because the Album field
is present in all of the options of how to sort.

Anyone have any Ideas - other than going back and entering the album
info for 4000 tracks! lol.

Perhaps Slimdevices can create additional ways of sorting? Or having a
user defined way of sorting? Perhaps in the next release?

So you might have a totally different problem. What exactly does not

other web views, which sometimes replaces unicode letters ith question
mark. Otherwise, me (and others, probably), do not have problems with

to install 3rd party plugins, the Custom Browse
plugin makes it possible to create a Genres menu. I think it might work
correctly in your setup, but I am not completely sure. Anyway, if it
doesn't work it should be possible to create a menu with it that works
as you like.

But I would still suggest that you enter album information in your
tracks. Most tagging tools make it possible to write tags to several
files simultaneously. If you have your music files structured by albums
on the harddrive you should be able to select all files for a specific
album and set the album tag on the files in one operation. This way you
just have to do it once for each album and you probably have less than
4000 albums. I'm guessing that you will get all sorts of strange
behaviours in SlimServer if you don't have album tags on most of your
files.

Re: [slim] Browse Library - Genre questions

2007-04-04 Thread Club1820

Thanks for the suggestions.

I wouldnt know the albums anyway to be able to populate this field for
them. My library is sorted by Genre. I have directories for each
Genre only. I have very few directories set up by Album.

I guess I can tag the tracks the same as the genre. ? All Jazz tracks
would have the album field populated with Jazz. then when I browse
Genre Jazz, It should list the artists and only those tracks that are
in that genre and have an album of Jazz. Does that make sense?

Well, anyway. Its a thought. will have to think about how I am going
to do this. But will not be able to correctly tag the album info for
all my tracks.

Will also try the plugin you suggested.

Thanks again!

I appreciate that you're not trying to argue one side or the other, but
it seems that you might be expecting something from the Sonos that it's
not designed to deliver. The Sonos site clearly says PC or Mac or
NAS, not PC or Mac or NAS or Netstorage-that's-not-a-NAS. Yes,
there's also the option to use an iPod or CD player as the music
source, which might appeal to some people.

Note that only the Sonos ZP100 has a built-in amplifier. I expect that
most people who have CDs already have an amplifier or receiver. When I
made my decision the ZP80 wasn't available yet, and I didn't see the
point of buying another amp (or the point of paying 2x the price of a
SB). But if you don't have an amp, or want a new amp, then the ZP100
might make sense for you, although there's still the price issue.

Re: [slim] Debugging help re Vista m4a issue, please

2007-04-04 Thread bpa

That socketwrapper is effectively the latest that overcame problem in XP
with security s/w. A number of Vista users have found that it seems to
fix a similar problem with Vista. If it is a problem related to McAfee
- disabling is not enough to undo its effects - you have to uninstall
it.

There is a catch-22 situation - SS 6.5.1 is the first version that uses
socketwrapper for transcoding and socketwrapper generates debug messages
for it's console window. However when socketwrapper is launched by 6.5.1
the console window is disabled so the debug info can't be seen.

What I find strange is that 6.3.1 didn't work - it doesn't use
socketwrapper so there may be a different problem.

Was the debug log from 6.3.1 or 6.5.1/6.5.2 ? if the 6.5.1/6.5.2 can
you repeat with d_source enabled and show more earlier messages as some
seem to be missing.

Ross, thanks. Wasnt aware of that. Will try the program. Although
this will help, the majority of my library is remixes that may or may

that would be an improvement.

My point here is not to argue the merit of one or the other it is to

You can directly connect speakers to Sonos because you are buying the
unit with the built-in amp, if you are happy with that amp and don't
want to use any existing equipment I say go for it.

Whatever source you connect that holds your music has to be powered on.
I never heard of any NAs storage or Netstorage that is not a NAS, these
seem like interchangeable terms - what do you mean by this? What do
they say on the Sonus forum? Whatever it is, I'm sure it must be
powered on to work. Why do you want to connect an ipod? Won't the music
on your ipod already be in your music library? Isn't it easier to play
the music from your library without hooking up the ipod?

Thanks Phil !!!

I think understand now. This interface is goofy.

Where may I ask is that documented?

Ok, I think I understand now.

Starting from empty.

If I play Random Songs it adds a batch and starts playing.

If I let them play it will add a batch when it gets to the end.

Unless I hit RIGHT in the Press RIGHT to stop adding songs.

Then it loops on this list.

I think if I shut it off it it may automatically go into the stop
adding songs. Not sure.

But what I was doing was going back to random song mix when I turn it
on and it was just playing the same old list over and over. I unless I
rebooted server or chose a different way to play songs.

So there no quick way to just say play a new random list list (must
manually clear out old list first). But at least I think I understand
now.

[slim] bridge DHCP problems

2007-04-04 Thread pza

Does anyone else have DHCP working in conjunction with the
wireless-ethernet bridge? When I have the bridge enabled, neither the
squeezebox nor the machine connected into the ethernet port get
assigned IP addresses. If I set their IPs statically the network
connectivity via the bridge is fine to the rest of the network. If the
bridge is turned off, then the squeezebox gets an IP via DHCP without
any problems.

I've turned the bridge on and off several times to check that it wasn't
just a one off problem.

I'm happily working now with static IPs and the bridge enabled, but
would prefer DHCP.

[slim] Internet speed and wireless network

2007-04-04 Thread amini1

Does internet speed have anything to do with dropouts when running SB3
wireless from a computer? In other words, not using any internet based
music. I have huge problems more than 50% of the time with slow motion,
hesitating music. My wireless signals are all high but my internet
connection has been horrible recently(they're working on it). I'm
wondering if there's any connection.

I run a US Robotics MaxG router and a US Robotics MaxG extender. WPA
Personal security. My music is on a fairly new Apple iMac. I stream
nothing but lossless audio like FLAC and AIF to my Squeezebox.
Reliability is zero. One day it works and another it doesn't. The
server and network health page on SlimServer shows 100% at 3000 kpbs
with no music playing but with music playing, I'm lucky to get 100%
above 1000 kbps. Most readings are 100%, 50% or 0%. Any ideas? I'm
ready to give up on this thing and buy something different.

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Internet speed and wireless network

2007-04-04 Thread bflatmajor

At one point in time I too suffered like you.
Then I noticed it was only when playing music that I was suffering from
dropouts. Make that when streaming music it was most noticeable.

After numerous tech support calls, I found out that it had to with the
network dropping packets.

The tech support people had me go into my router software/firmware and
adjust a couple of settings. They made me upgrade to the latest version
of the firmware, change my Threshold setting and then had me change the
MTU setting.

Once that was done, I nevered suffered from dropouts again.
My connect has been stable ever since.

Maybe you learn from my pain..

1) Upgrade your routers firmware
2) Call the tech support people and see if they can tell you about the
threshold and mtu settings and how to change them.

It worked for me.

I'm running windows xp sp2, linksys wrt54g router and 6.5.1

I hope this helps

Re: [slim] Internet speed and wireless network

2007-04-04 Thread Maditude

this is a long shot, but ya never know...

It *could* possibly be DNS issues. A similar symptom happened to me a
long time ago (FreeBSD), when my cable-modem provider was having all
sorts of trouble.

I've never touched a mac, but you might try looking into setting up
your own local DNS, at least so that your server doesn't try and hit
your ISP's DNS server to lookup host-names for your 192.168.2.*
addresses on your LAN.

Under 'bsd, it was just a matter of setting up /etc/hosts with a whole
buncha entries for my network:

--
::1  localhost
127.0.0.1localhost
192.168.1.1 router
192.168.1.2 server
192.168.1.3 dot3
192.168.1.4 dot4
192.168.1.5 dot5
...
192.168.1.255 dot255
--

And also making sure that my /etc/host.conf file looked like:
--
hosts
bind
--

This tells the OS to first try resolving hostnames from the local hosts
file first, and THEN to consult bind (which would try to get the info
from a DNS server on the internet, typically whatever your cable-modem
tells it to).

Probably not much help, though OSX is derived from 'bsd. Might give
you something to go on, anyways. Good luck!

Works great. I have to keep Brightness up, but the Remote works fine.

I started with a Salamander Synergy, and replaced the grill which was
perforated metal with the glass. The perfs in the metal had some impact
on the remote, but mostly the dot screen made the SqueezeBox hard to
read. Replacing the screen with $20 worth of custom sized glass works
great.

It sure is funny with all the communications I have had with support

Re: [slim] Debugging help re Vista m4a issue, please

2007-04-04 Thread Matt Shelton

Thanks BPA. The log that I posted was from 6.5.2. I experienced the
identical issue - m4a's take 15 seconds to start playing after pressing
play while mp3's start playing instantaneoulsy - under 6.3.1, 6.5.0 and
6.5.1 (historically, prior to upgrading to Vista, I had been using
6.3.1, as I had issues the first time I installed 6.5.0 with XP, so I
simply reverted back to what had been working). When I changed just
yesterday from 6.5.1 to 6.5.2 to see if that would solve the issue,
instead of taking 15 seconds to start playing, the m4a's simply didn't
play at all.

I've also just tested 6.5.0 without McAfee installed - same problem.

Could I perhaps e-mail you text files of the debug reports when I try
to play the same file under 6.3.1, 6.5.0, 6.5.1 and 6.5.2? Maybe that
could shed some light on the issue. If you're okay with that, send me
an e-mail at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks.
