Re: [slim] How do you use your Squeezebox Controller?

Question: How do you primarily use your Squeezebox Controller?

- I usually place it back in the cradle after I've selected my music
- It tends to follow me around the house

Moves with me, hence why i cant wait to buy a second charging dock for
the other end of the house ;)

Cant wait to be able to plug some headphones in either and use it as
portable Squeezebox - that will change how i use it too :)

Re: [slim] Slim Devices hard disk ripping unit?

2008-05-20 Thread autopilot

Not only do you have to pay for the updates to the tag database, but
they only release it quarterly which could be a big problem for some
people. I would hope they could atleast provide a free download .iso of
the CD or something, but i cant see an mention on the site. Looks like
they are using the updates as an additional income revenue, which is a
bit cheeky IMO.

Not for me, but still its an interesting device and certainly would be
great from more commercial applications, like bars and hotels.

2008-05-20 Thread autopilot

Well i think you are in the minority here, i suspect that not that many
people really want this. Not really sure what use it would be anyway
and i certainly dont want to have to use a TV because a) I dont have a
TV in every room my SB's are in and b) its a complete PITA to use a TV
to playback music. I'm sure that some cool-ish things could be done,
but it's very much near the bottom of the list.

What i would like to see is a plugin that could stream album art etc to
one of those WiFi digital photo frames :)

When i say a step backwards, i mean just in a few area's such as the
networking stability (which is just a case of tweaking) and the fact
that it's very much more power hungry (many NAS's have become
redundant). Rhapsody and Pandora are also not available in the UK. But
on the whole, SC7.0 is a step forwards actually and the extra power

features. But roll on 7.1 :)

Re: [slim] What Logitech and this forum have forgotten

2008-05-06 Thread autopilot

I was on the beta program and got my Duet a few months before official
release. Both Controller firmware, Receiver Firmware and Squeezecenter
were very much beta. I had it working in under 10 minutes and i have
barely had a problem since. In a way i wish i had problems that could
have been identified and fixed so the many people who are having issues
could have been helped. But, it's basically down to my network. I have a
very good and stable router, there are no other wireless networks near
and i don't have (or need) any wireless encryption as i live in the
sticks. Most problems are down to peoples less than perfect wireless
network. But its the Squeezebox they see the problem with, so its its
the Squeezebox thats at fault. Thats not to say the software is
perfect, far from it and i think 7.0 has been a step backwards in many
respects, but all those cheap free routers the ISP's hand out to new
customers must surely have something to answer for.

Re: [slim] Napster

I remember this being asked before. Sean's response was that it could
not be possible until support for the required DRM was added
(obviously) however, support this DRM was being worked on. Read that as
you will, but personally i think it will happen at some stage - why else
would they bother working on it? Why build roads if no one intends to
drive on them?

I would be interested to know how the licensing works - would SB/Logi
have to pay license fee's to Napster, or would SD/Logi actually receive
payment/commission for generating business for Napster?

Why? That makes no sense. Simply redirect all traffic that head for the
old URL to a new one.

Slim has been killed everywhere, the software, the marketing, the

(potential) customers will be confused.

And why -EVENTUALLY-? Where has the uncertainty come from now? I
thought it was pretty clear cut, the decision was made and you wasted
no time in it getting rid of the name elsewhere. Now the decision is to
stall it for some reason?

Could this be indication that you are starting to realise what an
absolutely HUGE mistake killing the Slim Devices brand is?

For what its worth i am not that bothered really, but it's a shame to
lose Slim Devices. I know this discussion have been done to death and i
will still buy your products. It just makes no sense to do this!

- REW when in 8x-forward jumps to 4x-forward

For me, the second option is a bit less logical but ultimately gives

A better option than the burn re-rip method (which is a PITA and can
murder sound quality) is to remove the DRM with something like
QTFairUse6.

No, just one normal regular battery. when i was on the beta test
program we only ever got a few hours, even when it was just lying still
not being used.

After they added the power management to it it now will last a few days
out of the cradle if just lying there not being used. After an certain
time, the Wifi (the main battery drain) and screen are turned off, CPU
is also throttled down too.

Sounds to me like your Controller is not going into one of the
sleep/suspend modes - when you pick it up, you should not have to press
anything - but will see a 'please wait' screen while it wakes up and
reconnects.

See here - http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?JivePowerModes

 unfounded.

But SqueezeCenter and the SB's work together as one, much of the
functionality of the Squeezebox 'system' is in the server software -
the SBr etc are thin clients, thats what its all about. Are you going
to claim that every function thats actually handled by the server is

I A/B tested the Receiver Vs Squeezebox 3 (Classic) using the inbuilt
DAC's though a medium end AMP. I used the same FLAC's in sync and same
volume, then simply switch imputs. I did this for quite some time with
various types of music and could find no difference in sound quality.
They sounded very slightly different - the new one sounded just a
little warmer to me, but quality wise i could not seperate them.

 Hi guys,
The new products look great. I'm not a bleeding-edge guy so I'll wait

Reading through this REALLY LONG THREAD, however, something came to
mind. Are you guys signed up as Apple developers and are you looking
at the iPhone SDK? Seems to me that you should see what kind of
controller interface you could write for the iPhone.
 A) there are already millions of iPhones out there.
 B) the iPhone already has wireless built in, is portable, and has a
GREAT screen (better than the SBC, certainly).
 C) if I'm going to spend $299 on something, I'd much rather buy an
 iPhone.

I'm just not sure the SBC idea, while a good one, will be appealing to
a whole lot of folks at that price point. If you could ALSO make an
iPhone/iPod Touch interface for controlling SqueezeCenter, that would
open up a lot more potential sales of SqueezeBox3 and
SqueezeBoxReceivers. Let's face it, Apple's AppleTV is ok for video,
but there are many of us who don't want to turn on the TV just to
listen to music (and see album covers, etc).

Already been done :)

I personally think the Wiki is fine the way it is, it's detailed and
contains info for people that want to get their hands dirty. Also, it's
a Wiki - user contributed, so by it's inherently never going to be that
simple, you would be over writing someone's work and effort trying to
do so.

Personally, i think a better, professionally written user guide and FAQ
is required in addition to the wiki. Something that takes just the
essentials and core elements, and lays them out in a step by step
manual. And not one thats user contributed, because thats a wiki and it
soon become over complicated.

via IR from within the SBC. Correct?

Yes, and it will happen at some, one way or another. Just soon i hope.

It needs the IR and DAC (headphone) working to fully justify the price
tag IMO, although it very very good already.

I totally agree, but Squeeze Center is still there when you need more

Re: [slim] Best way to make systems more available to the average Joe?

2008-02-15 Thread autopilot

You know what causes a lot of problems for new users is the fact that
ISP's give away free crappy wireless routers, with super cheap generic
chipsets and odd configurations. Thats an issue that really needs to be
addressed too, because our friend 'Joe' assumes a wireless network is a
wireless network and he's quite happy with his uber cheap router - it's
they silly Squeezebox thats at fault, really!. I know people that are
seriously bot technically competent that had no problems at all with
their SB's. I know a guy who is about 70 that was given a second-hand
SB2 and he only started using PC's about 4 years ago, he had it working
in less than an hour (or so his son tells me). Complete novices who have
no problems at all - all because they have (admittedly by co-incidence)
reasonable working networks. Thats why i take such issue with SB's
being so complicated - i mean, are they really any harder than setting
up an iPod? My old VCR was harder. The issue is with networking, not
the SB per say. 80% of people who come on here who say MY Squeezebox
is not working usually find out that they should be saying my
wireless network is crap!. And finally, if it's down to bugs in the
software (and lets be honest yet diplomatic) it's had it's fair share -
some kind of certificate does nothing to address that, possibly just
muddies the waters further.

Still, it's a good discussion - cheers bobkoure :)

Re: [slim] Best way to make systems more available to the average Joe?

2008-02-15 Thread autopilot

maggior;269755 Wrote:
I think it is interesting that you bring up the iPod as an example of a
non-geek product that everybody can use. When I bought my iPod, I was
taken back when the salesperson informed me of a class that the store
sponsored to help people get their CDs into iTunes, get their tunes
onto their iPod, and then use their iPod. A friend of mine's wife, who
is an intelligent person, gave up on using an iPod.

My point is that even the iPod, which is held in such high regard for
its usability, isn't grasped easily by some. I wonder how many iPods
sit idle in the homes of people that were never able to figure out
really how to use them. There are probably a lot more than you would
 think.

So, if the SB becomes anywhere near as ubiquitous as the iPod, I think
there would be a need for techies to assist people set up their SBs.

The idea put forth is interesting. I'm not sure that a certifcation
would be necessary, but some sort of qualifications would be necessary.
It's not as simple as just knowing networking, you have to know and
understand CD ripping, transcoding, tagging, etc.

People regularly call in the Geek Squad (techies for hire from Best Buy
here in the US) to set up their wireless networks and stuff. Why not
 the SB squad? :-).

If Logitech starts selling these in many large retail stores, perhaps
it would be good to have knowledgable local users on hand to help with
advice and/or offer services to set up and configure the devices.
Maybe these users would be from a Logitech sponsored user's club or
 something.

This is a really good discussion. It's very interesting to read
 everybody's viewpoints on this.

Points well made. Unfortunately, nothing personal, but i do completely
disagree :)

Firstly, i people want the Geek Squad to come to their house, fair
enough - there is obviously a market for them (they are in the UK now
too, at least the name is). But specifically for SB's?

Secondly, iPod's are different in that they are stand alone items that
all basically all the same. SB's on the other hand are integrated into
another system, you home network, which is different for each person.
Would that sales person have said we have a class learning to use
SB's, we will also come around your house and configure your flaky
network? Ipod Vs SB - neither is more complicated than the other, it
is all about the networking. It's only a sales ploy anyway. That's why,
in my opinion, having a geek squad is a good idea, a 'squeezebox
certificate' is not (amounts other reasons).

Finding qualified and experienced personal is all well and good, but
thats what the Yellow Pages are for (or whatever they call them in the
US).

Re: [slim] Best way to make systems more available to the average Joe?

2008-02-14 Thread autopilot

I think it's a daft idea personally. Giving a product a 'installer
certificate' would just make the product even more complicated to
average Joe. It's would not help sales, possibly harm them.

If people can's get on with the product, maybe they need to look
elsewhere. Apple or Sono's for example - really simple to install and
use, but at the expensive of functionality, customisability,
flexibility and community plugins, etc etc. But most people cant accept
that something might be a little difficult for them and blame the
product.

Also, if someone is so technically incompetent that they need a
professional installation, you could argue that they should not bother
at all - as how are they going to cope with maintaining it, trouble
shooting network issues and ripping and tagging music etc when the
'certified installer' is not around? Slimserver/Squeeeze Center is far
from perfect, but I would in fact argue that the initial installation
is not actually that hard, most problems people have are with their
existing Wifi network, PC or badly tagged music, not the Squeezebox
specifically.

My biggest fear has always been since the logitech acquisition that the
products could be 'dumbed' down to give them broader audience.

Im starting to wonder if the Trend one is not a better buy. It's a
little more expensive, but it the same T-AMP chip and the build quality
is in another league.

Question: Would you buy a Slim Devices/Logitech branded amp?

- YES!
- NO!

JJZolx;263218 Wrote:

Since the Logitech strategy lately appears to be aimed in the direction
of Sonos and their type of customer, I think it's a pretty safe bet that
you can expect a receiver with a built in amp. Probably something more
in the 30-50 watt at 8 Ohm range, though. Much more than that and it
would be too big and too expensive for this market.

You might well be right, but i personally would much rather see a small
AMP developed - it would make it much more flexible and would be great
if it somehow attached to the SBr. People say there are loads of AMP's
available, sure there is, but i cant find one that suits my needs
anywhere - small like the SBr, good quality build and sound, and auto
switching so i can hide them both away and never have to worry about
powering the AMP on and off.

It would also obviously be developed to by a separate team than the
SBr/SB3 because its a very different area, so it would make more sense
to have them developed side by side yet separately (i guess Logitech
have teams/departments that deal with AMPs etc).

Not having in integrated AMP would also mean that it could be swapped
out of replacement due to fault or another model.

The Sono's buyer tends to be much less technically minded. They buy
them because they are easy to set up and just work - even the word
plugin scares them. SO if the AMP was well integrated and marketed
right, a lot more people would come over from the Sono's side IMO.

I'm not saying it essential, but it would be nice and they would sell.
Seems to make sense now with over new Logitech overlords :D

Steady Eddie, it's makes perfect sense to me as a question and its
perfectly vadid to be asked on the forum, even if the answer is mainly
'no'. Ironically, your question/answer make less sense to me, but it
would not just be brand - it would be style, form factor, integration,
power switching and after have DC out to power the SBr itself.

I dont think it was mainly about 'brand', rather the style (because
thats important to some people, maybe not all, but some) auto switching
and powering. It would no bother me in the slightest if it was
'Logitech' or otherwise. I know many people on the forum say they wont
want one, but they are a different demographic so in some ways you
could say its an irrelevant question. Maybe the question would be
better if it was do you think they would sell?.

Which T-AMP do most people use with their SB's?

However: I don't want Airport Express but SB due to the sound quality

 What to do?

Slimsever can be controlled with any web enabled device - PSP, DS,

Re: [slim] Frivolous Question ('Center' vs. 'Centre')

2008-01-23 Thread autopilot

I think many Americans seem to be under the impression the
British/English care a great deal, which mostly they dont - we know
full well that English is an bastardised illogical mish mash of Old
English, French, Latin and several other languages. Strangely enough,
it seems to often be the case that its the American friends i have
show the most Confusion and surprise at the they other nations speak
'their' language.

A lot of differences with US English comes from the fact the Europeans
that populated America (who did not speak English) had to adopt it - so
it was slightly simplified and many words are spelt more phonetically.
I.e. they could not understand why there would be a 'u' in colour
(color) so simply dropped it. Some changes makes perfect sense, some
don't.

Anyway... i was under the impression that Centre and Center are both
acceptable in the UK - but have slightly different situations. Might be
wrong, but i though we had a 'Community Center' and the 'Centre of a
circle' etc (or other way around).

Like i said, really dont care but i find it strangely interesting!

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-22 Thread autopilot

Right now the controller is a little over priced for what it does - once
the controller is updated to playback functionality and the IR emitter
is made use of (for powering AMP's on/off etc) it will be well worth
the price IMO. Leaving it to the community im not sure is the best idea
alone - i would like to hear Logitech themselves say that development it
this area will definitely happen.

No, it would be very -unwise-. The DAC wont be used when the controller

Re: [slim] SB Controller vs. N800

2008-01-10 Thread autopilot

So far I have used a PDA, Nokia Smart Phone, Play Station Portable, N800
(briefly) and laptop - all with various web browsers, web skins and
stand alone apps. I now have been using an SBC for 4 months or so as
part of the beta test and i say that as a Squeezebox remote the SB
Controler wins hands down. And i honestly dont say that with any Bias
or fanboyism at all.

The reasons it beats all the other devices for me are;

1) Always on wifi - because it mostly in the dock wifi is always on -
other devices like the PSP, PDA etc constantly lose the connection when
idle to save power - it takes a few seconds to log on and drives me mad
when i just want to flick tracks but have wait.

2) Ergonomics - the SBC can be used one handed, in fact it works best
this way. Most other devices need two hands. I prefer to have a beer
hand free at all times. I also just feels right using a remote in one
hand.

3) Start up time - with say my PSP, i not only had to switch it on, log
on to the network, but i also had to load the web browser. With the SBC
it's just there - i grab it and its ready to use before my eyes even
get chance to focus on it.

4) Knowing where it is - I know where it is - next to my sofa in the
dock, not in the car or next to the bed, or being used by someone else
for something else.

5) The dock - is a good wieght and lose so i can grab the SBC and drop
it back with speed and ease with one drunken hand. The other docks i
had for my PDA, PDA etc had to be clicked in with two hands and to much
concentration to make me instinctively want to dock it after use.

6) Fool proof, easy to use and WAF - I can let my mates have free reign
without worrying about them exiting the browser or something.

7) Speed of UI - very sluggish on most devices, often worse when using
a NAS. Once the album art is cached it's lightening fast. Thats no to
say it's perfect in the beta firmware, it's one of my main complaints,
but we are told its being fix right now.

Even if Jive was ported to Nokia Tablet OS or other mobiles OS's, you
only really solve #7.

Of course whether or not you think its justifies the extra cost is up
to you, but just looking at it from the view of it being used as a
remote, the SBC is the nuts. But if i had to chose the N810 would
probably get my money first - but i would want a SBC too. It's a tough
one, but when do we really pay full RRP anyway? RRP to me is just a
guide to what not to pay more than. Usually it's kept at it's highest
price on official prices so we can all buy a 'bargain' at Bestbuy etc
(this is especially true with Logitech IMO). And after RD is recouped
we will probably see it even cheaper.

Regarding the price, while i dont fully understand why the SBC its so
much more expensive than the SBR (other than logitech's product
strategy), lets not get too hung up on it - we should all know by now
that manufactures RRP is not often actually what you end up paying -
and this is especially true with Logitech in my experience. So when you
see it on DAB's or Bestbuy cheaper you think great and buy one. And the
RRP will come down anyway, once the RD is recouped. I have always just
seen RRP's as a guide to what you should not pay more than.

Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here

2008-01-09 Thread autopilot

Also regarding the lack of working headphone on release - could it not
be that this is partly because logitech dont actually want the
controller to be perceived as a portable squeezebox that can control
other SB's, rather than a brilliant controller that can also play
music? The latter is better IMO - if people wanted a portable SB they
would be a little disappointed, if they wanted a controller that does
other stuff they would be amazed by it :)

I cant wait for a version of Soft Squeeze running on it. I have always
looked at it and thought 'what if' - one of the first questions i asked
after getting my beta SBC was 'can i listen to music through it?'

Mainly, i would like a sort of basic DJ feature (although i was
thinking more about using the headphones).

Thats just one of lots of reasons i cant wait to see the software added
to play music on the controller, such as listening to the Cricket
results/commentary without interrupting my GF's TV show and still be
able to stay on the Sofa with her. Or listening to my tunes/podcasts
while moving the lawn. Or jacking it into a boombox... The list is
endless.

Hopefully a version of Softsqueeze be be available for the Jive
platform eventually (if its not already in early development already
;)), especially given how much interest there already is around it.

Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here

2008-01-06 Thread autopilot

CardinalFang;254924 Wrote:
I was on the beta programme and I must admit, this mirrors my thoughts.
It's a potentially OK piece of kit, but at the suggested price, I would
spring for the iTouch, it can even do VoIP calls now on top of having
WiFi and an SDK for apps and the interface is much, much better than
the new controller. OK, it's not a dedicated controller for the
Squeezebox, so not a valid comparison perhaps, but given £300 to spend
today, I would put it there, not on a Squeezebox controller.

The scroll wheel on the beta controller is bad and the buttons are in
the wrong places. It's big, has too many options and is frustrating to
use. I'm also disappointed that the new receiver is lower spec than the
 old Squeezebox.

I do feel slightly unfaithful for saying this though, I did get a
controller as part of the beta programme, for which I am grateful for
being given the chance, and perhaps it's living through that sometimes
painful process that has tainted me, but my feeling right now is that
the interface is still not good enough. It's clunky, unreliable and
slow. My wife refuses to use it and has gone back to the old remote. I
struggle on, but end up with the old remote most times - or sadly,
using an Apple remote with Front Row on a MacBook Pro that is damn near
silent. It obviously costs a lot more, but it is much more usable for
 me.

Perhaps I should wait for product before further comment, but I feel it
really needs to be a whole lot slicker - and I agree with the poster who
said that the fact that it is full of unused, potentially exciting
hardware is not a plus point. If I buy a phone and am told that it has
great GPS, but I can't use it yet until I write some software for it,
that doesn't make it a bargain. It maybe exciting for geeks, but for
 consumers it's a complete misfire.

Gut reaction - a missed opportunity that won't steal many Sonos sales.
The software isn't finished, it's still trying to appeal to the geeks
and the new hardware should be better than the old, not good as was
quoted elsewhere. Slim is meant to be the audiophile player vendor.

My thoughts exactly. The beta Controlers firmware does not cut the
mustard, its a ball ache to use. But given it's been offcially annouced
now they must think its close to being ready, which supprises me.

One thing i will say is that i am very supprised that the release
version is the same as the btea - i was expecting something much
slicker, although it's just about fine as it is.

But i will try and take the glass half full attitude regarding the
inactive headphone socket, which could be great - a feature i would
love to have working. They obviously ran short on development time, but
i am glad its not been removed.

But congrats to all at Logitech/SD. I really think this is the way
forward for you, just dont kill the SB3 too soon. I want a screen in
the main room, but i will by a Duel receiver for satelite listening
area's.

Re: [slim] Backing up music library

2007-10-22 Thread autopilot

I have tried so many different options for backing up my files,
including writing complicated batch scripts for Robocopy, but in the
end i found Synctoy to be the best. It's free, simple and from
microsoft -
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/synctoy.mspx

I use 'echo' mode most often.

Re: [slim] Backing up music library

2007-10-22 Thread autopilot

Hmmm. Yeah, that's the problem. I configured MP3tag to maintain the
last modified timestamp... The reason for this is so that I can easily
see which albums were recently ripped to FLAC and which ones are still
MP3 just by looking through Windows Explorer.

If the timestamp changes when I modify tags, then it makes it tricky to
tell which albums have recently been re-ripped to FLAC (I might have
changed the tags in some of my MP3s, so then it would look like these
 albums were recently added).

There are ways round this, and I can just adopt a different system -
but if I can find a backup tool that is clever enough to detect changes
to tags, then that would be the ideal solution...

Synctoy will detect changes to the tags, even if the time stamp has not
changed. You just need to select the 'check file contents' option. Takes
a lot longer but works perfectly.
