[slim] Suggested new plug-in
Just stumbled across a free streaming service that would be a great addition to the LMS plug-in options. Steinway Piano offers a free streaming service at http://steinwaystreaming.com/steinway/streamHome.jsp Obvioiusly a lot of piano music, but the streaming quality seems quite good. Re: [slim] I am getting this screen instead of going to the LMS
I'm assuming it had been working and that you've tried rebooting the RPI. Is the RPi connected with ethernet or wireless? If the latter, see if it shows up on your network using an ethernet connection. Note however, it won't be the same IP address as before. If you can connect with the ethernet, this will allow you to check the wireless settings. If it doesn't connect in any manner whatever, try pulling and re-seating the SD card. Other things to do are to try a different power supply for the RPI as they can go bad. Also, if you are using a HAT, pull it off and re-seat it. Good luck! mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113421 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Plans if Logitech pulls the plug ?
I've been a user since I brought one of the original SliMP3s somewhere around 20 years ago, then moved to the Classic/SB3 and currently have a pair of Touches and a SB Radio. All are working just fine (though I have expanded with a pair of Raspberry Pi players with HiFiBerry HATs.) While I certainly don't want the devices to break or Logitech to drop support for LMS, I sure can't complain if those things happen as I've gotten more than my money's worth from them. Interestingly, I'm currently in a Roon trial to see if their extra bells and whistles are worth the annual subscription fee. That service does support the Squeezebox and RPi players as well as other equipment. Not sure where my decision on that is going to land here in a few weeks, but the one thing I do know is that I won't be out of business no matter what the SB players or Logitech decide to do. Slimdevices was one of the most far-sighted and innovative products around, but, in the computer world, even the best stuff eventually gets passed. The nice thing is we aren't yet to that point. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=111525 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Smart people will stay with Squeezebox
Will add my vote for the Squeezebox system. I started with one of the original SliMP3 players 15 years ago. Took the CD player out of my system after getting a SB3 and haven't looked back. Today, my 2 Touches continue to work perfectly and recently added a Raspberry Pi player to the group. The Vortexbox server has been plugging away for years with not much attention needed. >From the daily use perspective, I have no problem finding the music I want to play and it sounds great. Most of the new gear I've seen since either has limitations, or is overpriced "audiophool" gear, or simply has a prettier interface. I don't want to spend money and give up features I already have. While I love music and enjoy it on a good system, audiophilia has gotten so silly over the years that the last thing I want to consider myself is an audiophile. As for pretty interfaces, the Touch is pretty nice and I don't need any more -- I"m listening to music, not looking at things. Roon makes a case for searching one's collection and finding other music that -may- interest me, but I don't like the subscription model for playing my own music and I'm really not having any problem finding the songs I'm in the mood for. Some things are instant classics that simply work right for years and years. Squeezebox is one of those classics. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107925 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] No sound after a router change
Here's a follow-up to let everyone know the problem has been solved. The U-verse router comes set to WPA2-PSK only wireless security. The setting is pretty well buried and I hadn't paid as much attention to the WPA2 v. WPA issue as I should have. I figured if its making the wireless connection at all, then everything should work. Wrong! I finally found the setting this afternoon and changed it to include WPA-PSK (TKIP) option as well and then restarted he wireless service. That seems to have fixed the problem. That's the problem when you don't do the technical stuff day in and day out. I get there eventually, but it can be a lot slower than one would hope for. Re: [slim] No sound after a router change
All the Squeezeboxes are currently wireless. The U-Verse router supports wireless b/g/n at 2.4 GHz and my other wireless devices seem fine (including an original model Kindle Fire and an original model Roku.) I did try a quick experiment this morning. Before coming to work, I ran an ethernet cable to one of the Touches and it played music. So, it seems there is something weird about the U-Verse router's wireless. (This is probably the 4th or 5th wireless router I've used and all the others haven't had any issues.) I'll keep experimenting. If necessary, I'll hard-wire the two Touches which are currently only a short distance from nearby switches. The Radio is rarely used to play from the music server so I may just leave it connected to Mysqueezebox.com. Or, I could turn off the U-Verse router wireless and use one of the old wireless routers sitting in my basement. Will keep you posted as the experiments continue. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107580 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] No sound after a router change
I've looked in the forums and checked all the settings I can find but to no avail. I have two Touchs and a Radio, fed from a Vortexbox. Everything was working fine. On Tuesday this week, I took AT&T up on their offer to switch from 12 MB DSL to 100 MB U-Verse internet. That meant a switch of routers. Everything seems to be working fine except for the Squeezebox system. Neither of the Touches nor the Radio will play from the Vortexbox. The web interface and players show that they are playing the correct song, but no sound comes out. If I switch to mysqueezebox.com, the radio stations play just fine. It is only when I switch back to my server to play local files that the sound disappears again. Besides checking settings, rescanning and the like, I've rebooted multiple times the router, the players, the vortexbox, switches, checked wireless settings and cables, all to no available. Any ideas? mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107580 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Thank you so much, and good bye :)
Interesting how people have different experiences with the same product. My two Touchs, an old SB3 and a Radio are quite reliable whether it is playing NPR on the Radio in the kitchen or choosing music off my server for the main stereo. And, if the Squeezeboxes ever collectively die, I know my (backed-up) music collection is still there on my server in a standard format, waiting for whatever my next music player happens to be. Other than dusting, I'm not quite sure what maintenance the SB players need. The music server (a Vortexbox) needs an occasional upgrade and I periodically add new music to the collection, but that's all easy enough and it'd still be required even if I was using a different playback system. I was sad when Logitech discontinued the Touch and Transporter, but recognize they apparently never got the sales volume they needed out of of them. However, I gather component based 2-channel music-only systems are way out of fashion these days. That said, I'm a perfectly happy aging dinosaur with my discontinued gear. ;-) mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100307 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

If the Dell already has an operating system installed, it is pretty simple to download the appropriate LMS version and install it. This leaves the PC as-is in all other respects and makes it pretty easy to experiment without investing much work. You can always switch over to the Vortexbox OS if you wish, but remember that wipes out the previously installed OS and programs. 2. If you're installing a new HD with that has no OS, I'd suggest starting with the Vortexbox OS. This installs the Linux OS along with the LMS and other audio related software needed for automatic ripping & tagging. If the machine has no uses other than a Squeezebox server, this makes the most sense to me since everything is already optimized. 3. I will note that the Vortexbox OS appears as a command line-only OS when you access it directly on the PC where its installed. This takes a mental adjustment for some who aren't used to this. The VB system is designed to be managed from other PCs using a web interface. That's where you'll find your GUI. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97968 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Thanks for the explanation as to why the immediate need for a different system. Good luck with your quest. As for the 24/192 experiments, I'm in the seriously doubtful camp as to the necessity (and even wisdom) of chasing that format. I have some 24/96 material and the difference for me is extremely subtle (based on my making the 16/44 and 24/96 material myself to avoid the influence of different masters.) It seems the 192 factor just unnecessarily introduces ultrasonics and more noise susceptibility into the equation. If you haven't been following it, check out the thread in the Audiophile section started by Archimago in testing the Squeezebox at CD and rates up to 24/192 with the EDO plug-in. Interesting stuff. With an Atom processor and 2GB of RAM, it uses very little power. I leave mine on 24/7. Yet, it is very responsive to the Touch (and my 3 other Squeezeboxes) and shows no hesitation when looking for or playing music. I've got right at 55,000 songs in my collection and the Vortexbox doesn't miss a beat. The price is right, too, if you build your own. I built my Foxconn for about $200 and the OS is a free download. I'm considering other options other than the touch. I use a Vortexbox as a server for my Touch and the system works without problem and is very stable. You can buy a Vortexbox PC ready to go or you can build your own and download the preconfigured operating system for free. (I did the latter using a Foxconn Atom-based PC.) The use of an external server running LMS is the better way to go IMO. Many people also use a NAS, but the only catch with those is some models tend to be underpowered in terms of CPU/RAM capability when it comes to running LMS. If you go that route, I'd recommend checking the forums to see which NAS models other users recommend. That's the key when it comes to using a Touch. They are a wonderful player, but some setups work better than others. Instead of reinventing the wheel, use the forums to find the gear & configurations that have been most successful for others. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97968 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Knowing that you're connecting the hard drive directly to the Touch is a good start. If you check the forums, you'll find that the Touch has always been problematic when using a directly connected hard drive. Some makes & models of USB drives work better than others, and the Touch's built-in LMS, in general, doesn't tolerate directory, artwork and file naming errors well. These issues get more difficult as the size of the collection increases. When the drive is first attached, it must be allowed to do its search uninterrupted (i.e, don't play music until it's done). This can be a slow process which can be frustrating. I use an external Vortexbox server and don't have any Apple lossless files in my collection, so hopefully others will pop in with ideas for you. How about some more info? What file type are you using for the music? Is the hard drive directly connected to a Touch using the built-in server or running though an outside machine with LMS? If the latter, what OS is being used? Have file permissions been examined? What file type settings do you have set in LMS? Hard to say what's actually going on as Logitech has always been very secretive about such things. A quick check showed the Touch is still available at Amazon, Crutchfield & ABT, so it may be little more than an inventory issue and the timing of production runs. I can remember a few years back when people were proclaiming the Duet's player was prematurely dead. It turned out the original internal wi-fi circuit was no longer available and they had to FCC re-certify the replacement before they could do the manufacturing run. Not sure why that was a state secret until after-the-fact, but it was Logitech is a very curious company when it comes to telling the public what's up, but assume they have their reasons for doing things the way they do. Unfortunately I lack the ability to read their mind! What I do know is that it is human nature to speculate endlessly in the absence of solid info. reinholdk wrote: > ...and kept the habit of listening to albums and not to a sequence of > unrelated (maybe even randomly selected) tracks. > This is somewhat off-subject, but the concept of an album as a "complete work" is a relatively recent concept in popular music. 78s and cylinders only allowed for a few minutes of music. While you could buy classical works on 78 records, you ended up with a group of 8 or 10 records. That wasn't done with popular music. Prior to the 1940s, sheet music outsold records and popular songs were purchased as individual works. The song "After the Ball" by Charles Harris was a sheet music pop best seller in the 1890s. It sold 2 million copies in 1892 and perhaps 5 million that decade. The LP (long playing record) wasn't available to consumers until 1948 and through much of the 50s was rarely used as anything more than a collection of songs by the same artist. "Theme" albums (other than Christmas, etc.) didn't really come onto the scene until some of the rock bands in the 1960s started to fancy themselves serious artists. So, one can argue that the sale of individual songs on iTunes, Amazon and similar services is actually a return to the more common was of enjoying popular music for most of the 140 year history of music sales to the public. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Just Google "Righthaven", or check out the RIAA lawsuits that have been going on for over 10 years. TV channels routinely disappear from cable and satellite systems as the program owners and conduit providers fight over contract details. Sometimes they come back, sometimes they don't. The internet radio system has already had stations come and go thanks to copyright cost issues. Radio copyright fights go way back. ASCAP tried to double fees in 1941 and the stations called their bluff. That's why BMI was started (Broadcast Music Inc) as radio stations looked for alternate material. There is just too much money involved for the copyright holders to ignore the cloud trend. Re: [slim] New SB ?
There are definitely potential issues in storing one's music on "the cloud" or depending on it as your music source. There are plenty of examples of problems in related areas. One of the most famous is the 2009 episode when Amazon went into the Kindle Readers of customers who had already bought Orwell's "1984" novel and deleted it. They later apologized, but there was no small amount of irony in that move. This past February, 5,000 ebooks became unavailable on Amazon due to a dispute with the publisher. Music availability comes and goes at the whim of copyright holders. I remember about 10 years ago that my wife, a Jimmie Spheeris fan, tried to replace one of her old LPs with a CD and found it unavailable. Used copies were over $100. It seems Sony pulled the distribution rights from Rain Records. That made it illegal to sell new copies. Had this music been on a cloud service, it would have simply disappeared. The availability of movies similarly depends on the copyright holders. Try finding a quality copy of Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit" in the US right now. (The UK version is wonderfully restored while the US version looks like it was made from a worn out 6 hour VHS tape.) A related concern is the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) which gives amazing authority for copyright holders to go searching for violations. Subpoenas to ISPs for user info are now commonplace. (I have a friend who was recently notified by his internet service that they had turned his name over to a plaintiff's law firm for allegedly downloading a movie from a bit torrent site. Interestingly, he does not own a TV and I can personally attest to his computer cluelessness.) I do not find it inconceivable that some of the aggressive copyright holders will decide they are entitled to prowl through collections uploaded to the cloud in search of "violators" and then demand you prove your possession of same is legal. That could entail a lot of work and possibly even significant expense if one has to hire a lawyer. Thanks for the info. I'm not interested in debating, but just trying to add some perspective. Anytime anyone buys technology there is a risk of ending up on the out. A lot of people were sure the Betamax video format was going to win against VHS, but it didn't. Both electric and steam powered cars were hot commodities a hundred years ago. They lost big-time to the gas engine. Forty years ago a lot of people jumped on the quadraphonic bandwagon only to have the wheels on that buggy fall off. I was just pointing out that the Squeezebox user is in a better position than most in this regard. Our music collection isn't rendered useless if the product disappears and our amps and speakers will still do what they've always done with a new source. Anyone want to buy a Hayes 1200 baud modem? I paid only $700 for it new! ;-) mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95885 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Perhaps those who purchased a Transporter have more of a claim along these lines, but my Touch is the least expensive component in my stereo by a good margin. If the player broke tomorrow and proved irreplaceable, I've still got a lot of options. I might have to install a different program on my server and re-index things, but how hard is that? I don't find it falls into anything much more than the annoyance category. In fact, if I had multiple players and only one broke and couldn't be replaced, I could even replace just the one player, install its program and still run LMS for the remaining Squeezeboxes. About the only thing I'd lose would be sync capability. And, if my players are working but Logitech no longer supports LMS, it is open source and there is little doubt that someone will update it as necessary. Even then, most of the OSs out there are pretty good about maintaining backward compatibility. Again, I hope Logitech keeps steaming along with the Squeezebox players. I think they are a great option for a music source. But, if they don't, I know I have options. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95885 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'd be sad if my Squeezeboxes broke and they weren't making them anymore, but that has happened at some point to the vast majority of products ever made. I can't buy new parts for my old Hobart-made version of my Kitchenaid mixer nor get new blades for my reel mower. The same applies to many other older items in my household. However, the neat thing is that, if I've bothered to back up my music collection, it exists completely independent of the player I use. I believe one can have a high level of confidence that there will always be a way to play my music. I might miss the way the Touch or SB3 did things, but I won't be left hanging with a big collection and no way to listen to it. I hope Logitech sticks with the Squeezebox line and continues to improve it, but there are certainly far worse things that could happen if they move in a different direction. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95885 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Your earlier comments with respect to the financial performance of Logitech certainly suggested they are failing to do something others routinely get right. That was the whole point of the Apple comparison I made. They may be the big cheese at this particular moment, but Apple has certainly had their financially down years and various products that didn't capture the public's imagination for whatever reason. And, interestingly, when I looked at the unaudited 2012 year end financials for Logitech, they still showed a profit for the year (a bit over $70 million) -- just not as much as they made for 2011. Big difference between not making as much as investors would have wanted versus losing money for the year. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

One quarter of problems in this economy? Big deal. Don't forget that at one point (1985) Apple's Board stripped Steve Jobs of all authority and he left the company. In 1997, Apple lost over $1 billion. They've come back, but it's a pretty safe bet that they'll still make a few errors here and there in the future. As noted before, every company makes mistakes they wish they could recall. That doesn't mean that every back seat driver on the outside has the answer. Re: [slim] What if Logitech pulls the plug
Interesting how many people in this thread seem to think they have unusual insight into what Logitech "should be" doing as respects their product line up. As a profitable company that's been around for awhile, I strongly suspect they have more than a few people who know what they're doing when it comes to making a buck. I think the odds are pretty good that they've done some market research and have a good idea where they are going from here. Maybe they don't want to compete with the video streamers with sub $100 Rokus and the like. Sometimes a company finds it more profitable fulfilling a smaller niche than competing in a more congested, lower priced market. Same thing with the video screen. Some portion of market would love a screenless player, but what's the percentage? Would those sales justify the design, production & distribution costs? Once again, we're pitting our rather biased individual preferences against a company that is in the business, has access to a lot more info, and is probably a shade more dispassionate about the whole matter. Yes, there are any number of companies that I wish would bend the specifics of their product a bit more to my liking. Sometimes a company takes heed of customer input and sometimes they don't. It's just rather unrealistic to think that every idea I have is going to end up a high priority for a manufacturer. I'm not in the consumer electronics field, but after 35 years in the business world I know that decisions often include quite a bit of info that is pretty much invisible to those on the outside. Sure, sometimes in hindsight a business may wish they'd made a different decision, but if they are successful in their industry, the overall odds lay on their side of the court. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

For what it's worth, installing LMS 7.7 on a Linux Fedora Core 12 box went smoothly with no apparent problems. This was an update to 7.6.2. Re: [slim] official 7.6.1 23 aug no iTunes
I upgraded to 7.6.1 from 7.6.0 and it was one of easiest and fastest upgrades I've had with my Squeezeboxes over the years. The new version installed in just a few minutes. It took a total of 45 minutes to scan my 51,000 song library, including artwork. Both 7.6 versions are noticeably faster than the 7.5 SBS and prior versions. Scans used to easily run excess of an hour. BTW, my PC is nothing special - it is a Intel 2.4GHz P4 with 1GB ram, roughly 5 years old. I also can't complain about the lack of an install prompt for iTunes. If you add that, what about prompts for other plugins? Where does one draw the line? Logitech should do the same. No real interest in sustaining a debate on the issue, but even Apple screws up every now and then, even with their absolute control over all aspects of their system. Examples aren't too hard to find - a Google search of "apple os problems" returns 167 million hits. And, as a long-time Fedora Core user (dating back to Red Hat 6), the FC14 issue was Fedora's arbitrary change out of the blue. I've had all kinds of interesting problems with Linux and hardware configurations over the years. Of all the software I run on my Linux boxes, SBS and its predecessors have installed and run more reliably for me than any other program that didn't come with the FC install package. I'd agree that Logitech's level of commitment doesn't quite match that of Slimdevices (and the products have certainly become more complex since the old days) but overall, I'd give Logitech a "B". I think many of the SB3 and prior model users are simply happy campers and tend to keep their players until the unit just dies. One trend that is widely evident on this forum at least is that a good percentage of users have multiple players. I know when my Touch arrived, the SB3 in the main system was immediately switched to a second system. The only way I might sell it is if I snagged another Touch for an extraordinary low price during one of those little publicized, short-lived promo code sales that pop up every now & then. Re: [slim] A question about wireless sound quality
One point overlooked so far is that a wired ethernet connection can also have momentary interruptions due to network traffic and the processing needs of other programs that are necessary to run a computer. Simply put, a wired computer connection is not a smooth, uninterrupted flow either. As someone else noted, that's what the device's buffer is for. Several years back I unplugged the CAT-5 cable from my SB3 and counted. If my memory isn't too faulty, I recall it took about 8 seconds before the music stopped. There was certainly no deterioration in sound quality during the interruption - it played perfectly until it stopped. A wireless connection does add a few other sources of potential interference, but those are quite noticeable if they are creating a problem. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80087 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

There are some reasons you might have seen this. A packer may have worried they left out something, so opened the box just to double check and then resealed it when everything was found OK. Or that unit might have been subject to a random check to make sure the packing line was doing its job right. One could dream up a couple of other scenarios that in no way caused the unit to become "used" but conversely reflect well on the company's concern about quality control. Two comments on the above. First, shutting down the forum due to negative comments would not get rid of the negative comments. There are plenty of other online audio web forums where people could move on short notice to continue discussing Slimdevices products. And, if that happened, Logitech would lose all ability to respond with corrected info or explain mitigating circumstances. While they haven't bothered to do much of either up to this point, the option is still there and a lot more feasible on this forum than an outside one. Second, it is pretty tough to give new ideas concerning functionality, screen savers and useful applets for a product that hasn't been released. It seems like it continues to be very easy for the beta testers to forget they have a Touch and most of the rest of us don't ;-) -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76286 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Once a reputation for a product or company is set in the market it can be difficult (though not impossible) for people to change their minds. I'm in my late 50s and still remember the reputations for reliability and ease-of-use that particular products had 30 and 40 years ago. Over the years some of those products (if they still exist) have gotten better and others worse, but I still have to make a conscious effort to get past my original impression. The original SliMP3 came from the geek side of things almost a decade ago and the product has always involved installing server software, configuring a few ports, messing with routers and so on. Nothing particularly hard once you've done it, but it can have the potential to look intimidating. In any case, it is still more than "remove from box, plug in and press the play button." So I believe SB suffers a bit more from reputation than reality. I'm sure Logitech would like that reputation to evolve in the coming years. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75415 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] SB Classic Dented Box
$120 is a very nice price reduction. Whether the Classic is for you or you should wait for the Touch depends on your priorities and is a question only you can answer. The Classic would be a good choice if: - you're on a budget, - you're a casual listener and just want access to internet radio and music files on your computer, - you don't feel compelled to have the newest version of something, - you're happy with a simple remote (or other external interface) and don't need to see album art, - you don't want access to external USB drives direct from the unit. The Touch sounds like it'd be better if: - Sound is important. Beta testers report the Touch's sound quality is better than the Classic and may eliminate the need for external DACs and other mods many Classic users pursue. - The Touch does more. It can access an external USB drive without a server. - The Touch has a nice interface and display screen. - The Touch will natively play higher resolution files. There are other differences, but the above will give you a starting framework. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74687 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

What's the input sensitivity figure for your powered speakers? Is the speaker sensitivity level switchable? Have you tried the Duet with those speakers? If it gives the same volume level as the SB3, then the issue is a mismatch between the SB3/Duet and the speakers. If the Duet level is OK but the SB3 not, then you either have the SB3 settings wrong, a bad cable or the SB3 needs repair. Preamp outputs (such as from your PC) are often cable of a much higher voltage out than line-level devices. Re: [slim] Seriously p*****d off! (rant)
I don't think 15 minutes to work out a major software upgrade sounds unreasonable. The only time I'm bothered by changes are when they seem gratuitously unnecessary or pointless. Of course, sometimes companies do an extraordinarily poor job of explaining the underlying reason for a change, or hide the explanation in small-print footnotes. I'll have to agree the new "Apps" menu items complicated things (especially for people whose primary interest is just playing music) but with a little work I just got the Apps Gallery and Installer off the main menu. However, the switch between server hosted music and internet radio is now better, IMO. The 7.4 upgrade went pretty smoothly for me. The Controller seemed to pick up the change without issue. I actually had a far bigger problem when I moved from the version 6 server software to the first 7. There was a cache that needed clearing before the new software would run right. However, I'm a Linux user and just kind of used to the install and upgrade process never being quite as smooth as the more automated Windows and Mac process. However, I'll agree that Logitech needs to continue working toward making their products friendlier for the non-geek consumer. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71431 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

You didn't mention how your other wireless devices (laptops, etc.) are working. Bring your laptop into your listening room and sit by the Transporter and see what your signal strength looks like. Your neighbor may have a new wireless device that is closer to your Transporter than your other equipment. I assume you did the obvious and checked the back of the Transporter for a good antenna connection and position. (And do the same for the router.) Also, 2.4GHz is a common frequency for phones and other devices so that could be an issue. [slim] Squeezeplay question
While I've had a Squeezebox for several years to play my music collection, I've never been much of a internet radio listener. With the new server software I've paid a bit more attention to it this time around. As a result I thought it would be nice to listen to internet radio at work so I installed the current 7.4 Squeezeplay nightly yesterday. I did not install Squeezeboxserver since I had no music collection to play at work. Interestingly, Squeezeplay played MP3 streams quite nicely (but not WMA ones) but then quit working after about an hour. Now, the internet radio option does not even appear as a menu item. Our work system does not have ports 9000 and 3484 open, but that was true when I first installed Squeezeplay when it worked. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times (and also tried the 7.5 nightly) with no change. Re: [slim] Squeezebox: Wifi and Health
Keep in mind that radio waves follow the inverse square law - if you double the distance, the strength of the signal is only a quarter of what it was at the shorter distance. Cell phones have been a concern for some because we are holding the active device right next to our brains. Laptops might also be a concern if we are truly holding them on our laps. However, I suspect that not too many of us hold the Duet controller next to our bodies for long periods of time, nor are we sitting on top of our router or Squeezebox. The natural world has exposed us to all manner of toxins, poisons, contaminants, radiation and other things from the beginning of time. Sure, modern life has added a few exposures that weren't there before, but so far the overall studies in this area for cell phones have been either negative or inconclusive. One would anticipate that a radio device held against the head would be the first to show an unquestionably conclusive effect if it was there to be seen. If there is an increased risk it pales in comparison to the other risks we routinely accept as the price of being alive. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70112 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Apparently there is something in the mysqueezebox.com authorization script that will not complete when using this browser or OS combo. On a lark I ran the configuration from IE on an XP machine and everything worked fine. I can now see my Flickr photos on the Duet controller. I'm not sure if this is just a Firefox issue or somehow also involves Linux. However, the issue does not seem to be at the Flickr end. I can use FF/Linux and my Flickr page shows mysqueezebox.com as an authorized link. It is only when one clicks on "Complete Authorization" back at the mysqueezebox.com web page while using FF/Linux that it goes into limbo. I wonder if mysqueezebox.com has an IE-only script running that Firefox cannot handle? In any event, perhaps this note will help someone else. Besides unique tagging, you could also just create a special sub-directory/folder that only contains her music. She could then browse directly to just that music folder and see only her CDs. If it is a small collection as you say, she probably knows what is on each CD that she wants to hear so won't require the fancier multiple search options that is important for a larger collection. Not that I'm in the market for any new equipment right now, but it is somewhat annoying to periodically read about the special discounts for the SB and Transporter that are only available to those who happen to be close to Slim Device's headquarters. (Current holiday open house offer for 12/14/07.) It leaves a kind of a salt-in-the-wound feeling. No one is going to die from it but it just has a quality about it that doesn't sit well with the vast majority of customers who are unable to take advantage. I recall that others in the past have expressed similar sentiments. Perhaps a compromise would be to make the deal available to anyone who orders on that particular day. Those who participate in the forums would get an equal shot no matter where they live, but it still wouldn't be opening the floodgates to the world. Just a thought. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41020 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How to record cassette tape into Vista?
Recording an analog source (whether LP, cassette, open reel, etc.) into a computer is fairly simple once you've got the process down. First, your PC needs an external or internal sound card with a line-level stereo input. Many computers come with this feature already installed. You will probably need a converter cable to switch from the RCA outputs on the tape deck to the 1/8th inch miniplug that is common for soundcards. Second, you'll need an audio capture and editing program. I used Adobe Audition but there are a number of other programs including free ones available. Some programs include the ability to remove clicks, pops and hiss. You'll need to look around to find what suits you best. I typically record an entire side of a record or tape into the computer at once. Afterwards I'll cut it up into the individual songs or segments. At this point the files can be saved to WAV, FLAC, MP3 or any other desired format. You will also be able to burn an audio CDR if you have a burner in your computer. There are plenty of well written guides floating around the internet that discuss the ins and outs of this process, so do a Google search. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38092 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Transporter Price
I tried the Transporter under their 30 day offer and just couldn't justify the $2,000 price tag so returned it. But as someone else noted above, at $1,500 it would have been a keeper. Heck, even now that I'm all settled in with my SB3 and Lavry DA-10, I'd still be real tempted by a $1,500 tag. Guess that's the old bugaboo in pricing high-end products. It isn't easy to pick that point between maintaining elite snobbishness and the higher volume that comes from a lower price. In my case, $2K was just enough the trip the circuit breaker on my snob limit switch. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37730 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Buying a new Squeezebox...... or not?
Haunyack, I'm curious as to what part of the prior post your "malarky" comment applies? The whole of humanity is not shy for snobs who value brands and appearance as much or more than performance and audiophilia is certainly part of the human race. Exclusivity is a critical component of marketing for certain products where mass market penetration works against that image. Mortslim's point about some who need the status conferred by one brand over another is accurate for at least a certain percentage of audiophiles, though certainly not all. I would suspect that the executives and marketing types over at Logitech studied this issue very carefully and weighed the likely outcomes. They knew they'd tick off a few people with the branding change. They probably also looked at increases in market penetration into new segments with a more widely known product name. While corporations typically don't share marketing projection data with the public (and their competitors) it doesn't take a rocket scientists to figure they concluded there were probably more new sales to be had from the name change in contrast to lost sales to those who think their private club has now been invaded by the riff-raff. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37704 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox died in the night
Before declaring the Squeezebox dead, double check your network (router, cabling/wireless, etc.) and make sure other computers are visible to each other. If the SB display is off it could be nothing more than a bad ethernet cable. Also, don't forget the check the power supply. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37351 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Audiophile wishlist
I just bought an external DAC. There are many in the $250 to $1000 range - new and used - that represent an improvement over the built-in DAC. The power supply replacement is also very easy (though I'll confess I found it made no difference for me.) I actually did the trial run with with Transporter and returned it. For me, the SB3 with an external DAC (Lavry DA10) sounded the same for a little over half the cost. (Also, like you, I preferred the size and styling of the SB3. The Transporter was just a bit too big and "too much" for my tastes.) I'm sure the people at Slim Devices have examined the possibility of a mid-point Squeezebox very carefully. Like any additional product in a line it'd have disadvantages for them along with advantages. (Disadvantages like siphoning off sales that would have otherwise been a Transporter, extra inventory to manage that might not result in a cost effective increase in sales, etc.) Who knows what they'll do, but I'd be a bit surprised if they added a product in the middle. I'd suspect they are looking for ways to simplify the computer end of things to make it more user friendly. I think Slimserver is more of a hurdle for their market penetration than the Squeezebox/Transporter issue. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36022 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Amp on 24/7
Having the amp on 24/7 versus turning it off and on is like most things in the world. There are advantages and disadvantages for each, so pick your poison. The advantage to 24/7 powering is the amp is always warmed up and ready to go. Some argue this gives the best sound quality. There is also the argument that the power-on surge when you first turn on a unit is tough on components and that you'll improve lifespan by leaving it on. The advantages for turning off & on would include the power savings, along with the reduced exposure to power surges and spikes on your home's AC line. Why expose the amp to a hiccup on your power line when you are asleep or at work? Many would also argue that a well designed amp shouldn't have much exposure to failure during normal on/off powering and that the sonic benefits of leaving it continuously on are mostly in one's mind. This assumes we are talking solid state equipment that remains relatively cool when quiescent. If you had tubes you'd probably want to power off when not in use since outputs tubes have a lifespan in the 2000 hour range. Same with with a pure Class A solid state amp that runs hot even at idle. (Heat is one of the biggest enemies of electronics.) All power amps will need service at some point (the electrolytic caps in the power supply generally need replacement after 15 to 20 years or so) but that is not really a big on/off issue. In short, do what makes sense to you and don't worry about it. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35616 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Slimserver causes load on Internet traffic...
That is a good question about your hardware configuration. Are you behind a router or is your PC directly connected to your ADSL modem? If the latter case, what IP is your Squeezebox using and/or what DHCP server is assigning an IP address to it? You said virtually nothing about your home network configuration so I'm wondering if the problem ties to that. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34922 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] DSL vs Cable
> So, who has more stoppages in their audio streams while listing > to SqueezeNetwork, users of cable, or DSL? This is not a terribly complex issue to grasp. Frankly there is no technical reason that either can't work perfectly for you. Where people have problems is either due to their specific situation (a poor phone or cable line to their residence) or a local provider who doesn't do a very good job. I have fantastic service from AT&T DSL here in St. Louis and the local cable internet company I had before that was (and still is according to the local newspaper and Better Business Bureau) terrible. But that tells you nothing about your situation. It could easily be the opposite. If you followed my experience you'd be making the wrong choice in that case. Go to www.dslreports.com and you can see that every company has both positive and negative situations, but often you can spot a pattern for your community. Their web site allows you to narrow the search by State and includes both DSL and cable providers. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34900 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] DSL vs Cable
DSL and Cable are both perfectly capable of providing a good, stable connection for streaming internet radio. That said, there are also horrid examples of each. Your best bet is to talk with people in your local community. Where I live, DSL from the phone company has a pretty dang good reputation while the cable company has the reputation from hell. In another city, the opposite may be true - or both may have good reputations - or both may be lousy. Whatever the case, that is homework that needs to be done at your local level. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34900 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Need help! Right pass for network computer hard drive?
Do you mean find the "path" to the other computer's folder? If so, the easiest thing to do is map that directory. On the computer with Slimserver, open Windows Explorer and display your home network. On the other computer, make sure the directory with the music is shared. Back to the Slimserver computer, when you find the shared directory in Windows Explorer, highlight it and then "Map Network Directory" under the "Tools" command in Windows Explorer. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34141 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
