[Drakelist] DRAKE R7A problem on change frequency band. (SOLVED !!!)

2018-08-23 Thread Demis Bertoni
The temptation to solve the problem of the R7A has been very strong! I
removed the cover and carefully removed the DR7 card, sprayed all the
contacts on the connectors and de-oxidized the band change selector. After
installing the DR7 card again the problem has been solved !!! Thanks to
those who have given me advice and a special thanks to this really
fantastic mailing list!

It could also be as simple as the molex pins on the digital readout board.
Pry the board out a bit and re-seat them.  Look the pins over for any cracks
in the solder.

Good luck!

Have you tried reseating all of the boards. The R7's and TR7's suffer from
oxidation on the board connectors. Simply removing and replacing each board
typically fixes problems like you are experiencing. Do the same to each of the
cable connectors to each board as well as the power supply board hiding behind
the antenna switch on the right side of the front panel.

[Drakelist] Drake R-4C Problem

2017-10-10 Thread Dale Parfitt
I have a nice R-4C that has an issue I have never seen before. The AGC only
functions in Slow mode. The AGC switch checks out as does the Function switch.
A previous owner had jumbled the wires to the AGC switch (probably trying to
fix the problem)- I am close to 100% sure they are now correct- but the problem
persists. In all positions except Slow, the AGC voltage is high, around -75VDC
from memory and thus cuts off the stages controlled by AGC. In Slow, the RX
appears to function normally and S meter readings are OK.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Hello all. Just testing the water here. I have some Drake equipment including a

very nice looking TS-930 with all the bells and whistles that has a blown power
supply. I do not know what else could be wrong with it. I need to scale down my
equipment and just have one nice rig to use, so I would love to get the 930
back on the air. It has a very special value to me because my late brother,
WA4CFG left it to me. I think RF Parts or Mouser Electronics may have the parts
to repair the 930. If it can not be fixed, then I would entertain some trade

This was recently discussed in the Yahoo DrakeRadio group. The upshot is no one
really knows. A suitable cable type was possibly identified but the connectors
themselves remain something of a mystery. You may be able to retrofit with some
more modern connectors.

PA deck parts can be purchased from RFParts. Mouser is a good source for most

Re: [Drakelist] Drake R-8 vs R-8b

2016-07-19 Thread Arthur Delibert
If he's interested in shortwave broadcast listening or DXing, one big
difference is that the synchronous detector on the R-8B has selectable
sidebands, so if one side of the signal is suffering interference from a
nearby station, he can switch to the other. The synchronous detector
on the R-8 and the R-8A isn't sideband selectable. Unlike some
synchronous detectors, the one on the R-8B works quite well in my
experience.

Hope this helps.

Did Drake release new B-line cabinets without any white letting on the R-4B
cabinets such as S-meter zero, Phone jack Notch on the R-4B and Anti-Vox Vox
Mic on the TX-4B or were the cabinets shipped pure black with no white
lettering?

What is the significance of a large letter ":C" stamped in black after the
serial number of a receiver or transmitter.

It there any effective way to reduce the copper chassis discoloration?.

[Drakelist] Drake t-4xc sidetone problem

2016-01-31 Thread Paolo Emanuelli IK1QHB
good evening guys

I would like to ask for advice on the repair of a pair of drake t-4XC that have
a similar problem.

the first:

During transmission in cw, sidetone returns normally, except that in addition
to the manipulation telegraph with a normal note, has a second whistle with the
same frequency note, that should not be there ...
I know there is some problem on the circuit sidetone but I would like an
opinion on who is more experienced than me.

The second:

The second t-4XC (that is, what iuse every day as main rig) recently has the
sidetone note it moves a few dozen hertz up and down (only the sidetone
note….not in air) few things; only an attentive ear can find….
For me a bit annoying though, and if possible I would like to fix it.

can somebody help me?

Many Many thanks

DTMF Touch Tone Microphone, Low Pass Filters, plus
many original Drake manuals

Drake 1525 EM Touchtone DTMF Microphone
This is the mic that was used to add a touchtone pad to
many rigs in the 70s and 80s. It is a normal hand mic
from the front, but has a touchtone pad on the back.
Four pin mic plug. This particular unit has been used,
but is in good shape and includes paper work. $38

Drake Low Pass TVI Filters:

A low pass TVI filter is added to the transmitter to
reduce harmonic interference. All of these will handle
full legal power, have SO-239 connectors in and out,
and are 50 ohm filters.

Drake TV-3300-LP Low Pass Filter
This modern low pass filter has been optimized to have more
attenuation in the 40 MHz region, where many TVs have their
IF. It is good for 1000 Watts "average" according to the manual,
and has over 80 db attenuation at 41 MHz. This one looks great,
and includes the paper work. $30

Drake TV-1000-LP Low Pass Filter
This filter may also be used on the low end of six meters, as
well as on HF. It is good for 1000 W below 30 MHz, and about
200 W up to 52 MHz. $30

Johnson 250-20
This cylindrical low pass filter has a cut off frequency of
45 MHz, 75 db attenuation, and is adjustable. Rated at 1000 W
AM, or 5000 W PEP SSB. It is adjustable so you can get rid
of more TVI, and is rated to handle higher power. A real
win-win situation. $30

[Drakelist] Drake Antenna Tuner and related items FS

2015-08-16 Thread Ken, W8EK

Drake MN-4 C Antenna Tuner and Related Items For Sale:

Drake MN-4 C

The Drake MN-4 C is a 300 watt antenna tuner covering from
160 thru 10 meters. It features a very large wattmeter, that
can also read SWR. There is also an antenna switch built in.

The MN-4 C is much different than the plain MN-4. It is a better
match for the 7 line than the 4 line. It really is very close to an
MN-75.

This unit looks like new. I can not find a scratch or defect on it.
It includes the original manual, in the original box (including the
four packing pillars) for only $125.

Drake B-1000 Balun

This balun can be used on almost any of the Drake tuners. It is
rated to take a full KW. Compared to other KW rated baluns, this
one is MUCH more heavy duty, and also is quite scarce. $90

Buy both the MN-4 C and B-1000 for $200.

Drake Low Pass TVI Filters:

A low pass TVI filter is added to the transmitter to reduce harmonic
interference. All of these will handle full legal power, have SO-239

Drake TV-3300-LP Low Pass Filter

and is rated to handle higher power. A real win-win situation. $30

Classic Drake UV-3, 2 meter/440 MHz FM Transceiver:

The UV-3 was manufactured by the R.L.Drake Company in
Miamisburg Ohio in the late 1970's. It is a classic!
It is one of the first fully synthesized rigs covering both the
2 meter and 440 MHz bands, and optionally 220 MHz.

Frequency coverage is 144-148 MHz and 440-450 MHz.
It has exceptional adjacent channel and intermodulation rejection
due to having a six pole crystal filter and eight pole ceramic
filters.

Sub-audible CTCSS PL tones were not originally included with the
UV-3, but this unit has a Comm Specs TE-32 mounted on top of it
to produce all of the tones, selectable by a switch.

This transceiver works 100% as best I can determine on 2 m and 440
MHz and is in extremely good cosmetic condition. It has the 220 MHz
option, which does not appear to work.

It includes the original Drake hand mic, power cord, and paper
work for $350.

I also have many other accessories available such as many
different types of microphones, HTs, HF, VHF and UHF rigs, HF
and VHF/UHF antennas, etc.
Just too many to list here. Please e-mail your requests.

The FA-7 is an off-the-shelf fan. Somewhere in the bowels of the internet you
should be able to find the OEM make and model. If not, I can look on one of
mine tomorrow. It's a 19 CFM fan, IIRC. I have a box full of the Papst 32 CFM
version, but those are way too noisy for the average ham shack (nice upgrade
for the DL-1000 though...).

Re: [Drakelist] Drake FA-7 (fan)

2015-06-21 Thread W4AWM

Hi Bill,

Most any 110V fan that fits the hole pattern will work. Most are a bit
faster and noisier than the FA-7 fan but I used to work with broadcast
transmitters so fan nose never bothered me. There are 12V fans available that
also fit the hole pattern but they don't seem to move as much air as the line
voltage units. Whatever fan you install, it should be mounted so that it
blows out from the power supply. Also, the regular fans can be had at
hamfests for around $5.00, sometimes even less. You will usually pay big
bucks
for an FA-7.

[Drakelist] Drake UV-3 plus other items FS

2015-05-24 Thread Ken Simpson, W8EK

Drake UV-3 Transceiver, Power Supply, Low Pass TVI Filter For Sale:

Classic Drake UV-3, 2 meter/440 MHz FM Transceiver:

The UV-3 was manufactured by the R.L.Drake Company in Miamisburg
Ohio in the late 1970's. It is a classic!
It is fully synthesized and covers both the 2 meter and 440 MHz
bands -- one of the first.

Frequency coverage is 144-148 MHz and 440-450 MHz.
It features modular heavy duty construction.
It has exceptional adjacent channel and intermodulation rejection
due to having a six pole crystal filter and eight pole ceramic filters.
Transmitter is Direct FM and has excellent transmit audio.

Sub-audible CTCSS PL tones were not originally included with the
UV-3, but this unit has a Comm Specs TE-32 mounted on top of it
to produce all of the tones, selectable by a switch.

This transceiver works 100% as best I can determine and is in
extremely good cosmetic condition. I can only find one scratch
that is only visible if the light is just right.

It includes the original Drake hand mic, power cord, and both
operating and service manuals for $350.

Drake TV-1000-LP Low Pass Filter:

This low pass filter may also be used on the low end of six meters,
as well as on HF. It is good for 1000 W below 30 MHz, and about
200 W up to 52 MHz. $30

Kenwood PS-30 Power Supply:

This 20 amp 13 V DC supply was originally made to go with the
Kenwood TS-120/130 series of transceivers, but it also matches
the TS-430/440, and is actually a much more rugged power supply
than the PS-430 often used with the TS-430 or TS-440. It features
large heat sinks and automatic overload reset. Ripple voltage is
less than 20 mv at 13.8 VDC, 20 A.

The PS-30 has a heavy duty power cord with the standard 6 pin
molex connector as used by many Kenwood, Icom and some
Yaesu rigs. It also has terminals on the back for lower
current output, such as for a 2 meter or dual band rig.

This one works fine and looks good as well. It includes paper
work for $125.

I also have many other accessories available such as many
different types of microphones, HTs, VHF and UHF rigs, HF
and VHF/UHF antennas, connectors, miscellaneous accessories,
etc.
Just too many to list here. Please e-mail your requests.

Prices do not include shipping from Florida.

Thanks.

[Drakelist] Drake TR-4C rig for sale.

2015-02-10 Thread Philip Grocki
Members:

In order for me to enter the solid-state ham radio world I need to sell some
of my coveted Drake equipment to folk who appreciates vintage Drake quality
and its history.

For sale is a Drake TR-4C transceiver, serial #36799 (with full set of
10-meter crystals), accompanying AC-4 power supply, MS-4 speaker, and Drake
729SR microphone. No noise blanker installed.

I purchase all three units in 2008 from Ron Baker (WB4HFN). Ron fully
re-furbished the TR-4C and re-painted its case. All units are currently in
excellent condition (cosmetically and functioning), and were always dust
covered and pampered in my non-smoker household. Far less than normal usage
of the rig has been made since its purchase. 95% listening, 5% short
duration transmitting. No tinkering, alterations nor tube replacements have
been made by me.

Asking price for all three units is: $500

Shipping charges extra. Must be shipped in two separate packages. Carrier
of your choice.

Thank you.

I am trying to bring my old R4B/T4XB combination back to
life after about

35 years of non-use.
The 5595 kHz oscillator part of the second mixer 12BE6
circuit does not
oscillate. I have tried several tubes with no effect. As
far as I can
determine, the tube is functioning normally and I can make
the receiver
work (after a fashion) by injecting a 5595 kHz signal from
an external
source. Before I take out/test/replace the handfull of Rs
and Cs and also
look for a replacement xtal, I am wondering if anyone on
the list has had a
similar problem. In particular, can you recommend a
source for a

replacement xtal? Thanks!

Charles W4KEP

It may well be the crystal. Replacements can be
obtained from International Crystal. I've bought many
crystals from them and all were perfect. They know the
parameters for Drake crystals.
You might want to post also to the other drake list

It seems to me this is a fairly common problem.

the oscillator may be working but on another frequency. if you have a receiver
that you can listen around the 5595 wrap a few turns around the second mixer,
hook it up to the receiver and tune around the frequency. you may have a cap or
inductor that has changed value and the oscillator is still working. if the
oscillator is working you can add or subtract capacitance or inductance to
bring it to the correct frequency. i have done this many times and it works.

[Drakelist] Drake R4B 5595 kHz oscillator/mixer

2014-11-15 Thread Charles Bostian
My thanks to everyone who has sent me ideas. At one of your suggestions I
built a simple circuit to check the xtal performance. It works fine -
series resonant at 5563.3 kHz and parallel resonant between 5599.1 and
5599.3 kHz. So the problem must be in the four caps I haven't checked
yet. Naturally they are the four hardest parts to get to!

It could very well be a bad crystal. If you or a friend have a crystal not
too far from that frequency, you can wire it in and just see if the circuit

[Drakelist] Drake TR-7 question

2014-11-11 Thread Randall M. Payne
Trying again on this: has anyone had a problem with the coax lead from
the up converter to the high pass filter in the TR-7? I cannot get the
coax to stay plugged in. Not sure if I'm just not doing it quite right
or if there's a problem with the little fitting on the high pass filter
switch where the coax plugs in. It looks like the fitting may have
opened up some where the coax shield should fit. The fitting does not
appear to be getting a good grip on the shield of the coax. Also, the
center conductor of the coax, which should go into a socket on the
board, just bends off to the side. If anyone else has had a similar
problem, I'd like to hear how you dealt with it. I suppose you could
just solder the coax into place, but I hate to be drastic about this if
I can avoid that.

Re: [Drakelist] Drake TR-7 question

2014-11-11 Thread Jim Shorney

The center conductor needs to be in precise alignment with the small socket
hole that it fits into. Not that easy to do by feel, you really need to get a
light and eyes on it. Unless the socket has been clipped short by someone who
mistook it for an ordinary component leg or the open end is obstructed by
something the center conductor should slip in easily once aligned correctly.
The shield clamp can be re-tensioned somewhat, but it's not meant to grab very
hard in the first place. It's mainly an electrical connection rather than a
physical restraint.

There are several free packages...some good, others not so much, that do

I have used freePCB and the free version of viewmate from Pentalogix to
generate standard gerber or plotting files for small boards--multi-layer
are ok as well. Learning the full automated process from schematic
capture thru net list, etc to final art is an interesting passtime.
Starting with a fully documented schematic with bill of material makes
the capture process work very well--but it is sometimes contrary to the
way us older guys develop stuff!

[Drakelist] Drake R4B calibrator

2014-01-20 Thread Mike Bryce
Boys and girls…

I’ve been working on a replacement calibrator for the drake R4b. This
calibrator will output 100, 50, and 25 kHz signals. You select the output with
a dip jumper. The output also pulses on and off, and again, you can turn that
off if you don’t want it.

it has the same footprint as the original, and all wiring plugs into it with a
MTA.100 header and plug.

This project is about done. I’m in the process of having a small run of pcbs
made.

here is a link to some photos and ‘scope traces of its output

[Drakelist] [Drake C-line Dials

2013-12-17 Thread L L bahr

Talking about Drake dials,  I'd like make a WARNING to the group.  (I have told
this story before, but a long time ago.  The warning my save some VFO dials.)

Back in the middle ages, (the 60s),  I had a TR-4 with metal gears in the VFO
dial train.  I was in the habit of spinning the dial up and down the band until
the VFO hit the stop pin.  I did this on a constant basis with no ill effects.
Then Drake came out with the C-line twins and I had to have one of the new R-4C
receivers and T-4XC transmitters.  When getting them I did the same thing to
them as I did with my metal gear TR-4.  This was a BIG MISTAKE as the plastic
gears started to bind up in the R-4C and the tuning became much more difficult.
Mind you this was happening to a rig around one week old.  I called Drake and
they sent out a new VFO to swap out in my receiver.  I did this and again in
about a week this new VFO was starting to bind up and turn harder then when
new.  Drake sent me a third VFO which I installed and by then I suspected I was
some how warping these plastic gears by banging them on the end stops.  So on
the third VFO,  I no longer did this end stop banging and I never again had the
problem.  So it was OK to do what I was doing with the brass gears, but not
with those plastic gears.  I do know Drake did some experimenting back then
with different plastic but I don't know if a permanent change was ever made
over the long haul with plastic gears.  I do know the very last VFOs were again
made out of brass, but there were tons of VFOs  built with plastic gears.  So
my message is, don't bang those plastic gears on their end stops.  Hopefully
you did not inherit the problem when acquiring your plastic gear Drake rig.

One more caveat ,  Never ever put a petroleum based grease or lubricant on
those plastic gears as was done with their meta l gear VFO gear trains.  The
petroleum grease will swell the plastic and also bind them up.  The plastic
gears are self lubricating and nothing should be put on them.  This warning
came direct from Drake.

I know a lot of you guys know all this, but maybe the warning can save a few
VFOs owned by newcomers to Drake.

[Drakelist] Drake R4B calibrator

2013-12-08 Thread Mike Bryce
Gang,

We all know that the RTL parts used in the calibrator are no longer being made.
So, if your calibrator in your R4B goes kaput, then you're screwed.

This year at the dayton hamvention I talked to Ron, WB4HFN, about the problem
and he sent me a broken calibrator board. I needed the dimensions.

So, after lots of paper and a few broken pencils, a prototype pcb has been
made. Actually, three here made.

Same foot print as the original. You have your choice of either 100, 50, or 25
kHZ markers. The marker pulses so you can find it on a crowed band so you're
adjusting the dial to the marker instead of a SW broadcast.

The pcb will have .100 MTA plug assembly that plugs into the board. It supplies
the board with the necessary voltages, ground and output. There is no
modification required to the radio, the front panel control will work just as
before.

A 3.2mHZ crystal is oscillated and divided by a 7 bit ripple counter. You can
net the crystal freq with a trimmer on the pcb.

There is an on-board regulator to keep the oscillator stable and an adjustment
to control the speed of the pulses.

This is a prototype board. The next run will have some corrections made and I
am going to put in a jumper to select either a pulse output or no pulse
(steady) output.

The board is a hybrid. It has both through hole and surface mount components.

The final cost of the pcb has yet to be determined. I don't know if I will
offer it as a kit or fully assembled The surface mount parts are not the ones
that look like paint dots, but
 they are small.

If anyone is interested in the remaining two prototypes let me know and I'll
assemble and test them.

Right now, I don't have an R4B to install one, so will be looking for someone
that can write up the procedure on how to install the new calibrator.
