[Drakelist] Drake 2B General Coverage
OK, guys, I have been using my Drake 2B as a general-coverage receiver for a week now and I wanted to report back on my experiences. This is a receiver that you folks helped me out with about a month ago. To repair it, I had to install a 6BF6 tube (easily obtained) and replace the filter cap can. I made it a general-coverage receiver by using the accessory crystal sockets B, C and D. A 10 mhz crystal gives me 49m, a 13.5 mhz crystal gives me 31m and an 8.0 mhz crystal gives me 25m. The stock crystal for 40m includes the 41m band. The receiver's sensitivity and selectivity are very good. The tuning is spot-on accurate. While the audio does not rival that of an SX-28 or NC-183d, it is more than acceptable. I am really impressed. This receiver is a keeper. I have this set in my study and use it for general SWLing as well as monitoring the ham bands. It's a fun set to use. There are shortcomings: (1) you have to buy the crystals for each SW band; (2) it's a royal pain to change crystals. The 2B's top does not open, which would make changing the crystals less of a chore. Thus, I am pretty much limited to the SW bands listed above. This is a significant limitation. For example, I would like to be able to monitor the 19m band; and (3) I have yet to master the 2B-Q Q multiplier. [Drakelist] Drake 2B Update
I have some good news. If you recall, my 2B had a 6BE6 installed as V-6, the AM detector. Yesterday, I got a NOS 6BF6 and plugged it in. It made a very big difference. The set now performs extremely well in Diode/AM mode. It also performs well with the Product Detector and BFO on. I've been receiving a lot of amateur transmissions, mostly SSB, on 80m, 40m and 20m. So far, 15m and 10m have been relatively dead. Does that sound like an issue of propagation or does it suggest a receiver problem? My signal generator comes in loud and clear on both 10m and 15m. I received a new electrolytic can and plan to install that today. The can currently in the set is rated for only 150 WVDC and appears to be original. That voltage rating seems a bit low to me. The new one is rated for 250 WVDC. I bought the new one at http://www.hayseedhamfest.com/ I've located a few crystals at a reasonable price and hope to receive them soon. They should give me coverage of the 49m, 25m and 31m bands. At the hamfests this summer, I'll keep my eyes open for more crystals. I would like to have the 19m band, as well as the broadcast band. Eventually, I plan to buy the good manual that contains all the details etc. at http://www.k4oah.com/Drake_new7/index.html Finally, I'd like to thank you all for your help. Good deal Joe! According to my DXing friends (since I'm off the air with the impending sale of our QTH) have been telling me the bands have been really crappy so I think the lack of signals on 10/15m is probably not a problem with your rig, especially if your sig gen is being heard ok. Re: [Drakelist] Drake 2B Update
Nice to hear you got the 2B working better. My 2B actually works better with a different tube than the original type for V5, I believe, but not sure if it's V5 or V6. With all the original type tubes, the S-meter doesn't have as good of a range as it should. The RF gain control pot doesn't measure 15 megohms like it's supposed to though, so that might be part of the reason. I think it reads closer to 10 or 11 megs. I haven't been able to locate a 15 megohm pot anywhere, so I'm stuck with what I have. I think it's the original, but it must have changed value over the years. 10 meters has been pretty dead lately, except for an occasional signal, and 15 hasn't been too lively, although sometimes I hear a few relatively strong signals. I heard Germany on a couple weeks ago, and I was able to work them with a good report (100 watts). Both 15 and 10 have been pretty dead at night though. Hopefully that will change as we get closer to the sunspot cycle peak. 73, Al, WA2AS From: drakelist-boun...@zerobeat.net [mailto:drakelist-boun...@zerobeat.net] On Behalf Of Joe Connor Sent: Thursday, June 09, 2011 10:42 AM To: Mail List - Drake Gear Drake Gear Subject: [Drakelist] Drake 2B Update I have some good news. I am surprized anything worked with the wrong one in place. The 6BA6 is a much-maligned RF tube, actually its pretty good. There are other tubes with much lower noise but mostly they come with the price of poorer overload tolerance. The trouble with RF stages is not so much being able to handle very strong signals but with handling weaker ones in the presense of strong signals that are still within the passband of the stage. The stage is either desensitized by increasing the bias or, if bias is left low for the low level signal, one gets cross-modulation. There is no easy fix but compromising the tube in the direction of one being able to handle both signals with minimal cross-modulation is better than insisting on the lowest possible noise figure. AVC is not the answer because of desensitization. Its possible to make an input amp with very much lower noise than a pentode stage, for instance a simple dual triode cascode stage, but it may not take wide strength ranges as well. -- Richard Knoppow Los Angeles WB6KBL dickb...@ix.netcom.com ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
[Drakelist] Drake 2B Update
Thank you to all who gave me advice and guidance on this radio. I picked up this set (and the Q multiplier/speaker) at a garage sale for $10. It was filthy and looked like it had not been used in 40+ years. But it looked intact, it is a Drake and the price was right, so I bought it. I hoped all that it needed was some TLC and a new home. It's my first Drake. 1. The set is now working on all bands. A NOS 6U8 helped accomplish that. 2. The set is playing pretty well. I found, however, that a 6BE6 had been subbed for a 6BF6. I have a 6BF6 on order and I hope that the correct tube will improve performance even more. 3. I have a replacement filter cap can on order. I'll feel more comfortable with new 'lytics installed, although I can't detect any hum. 4. I was so impressed with the set's performance on 41m SW broadcasts that I've ordered crystals that will help me receive other SW bands. After spending a couple of evenings fiddling with this set on the ham bands and on 41m, I'll be keeping an eye open for Drake sets at all future hamfests. This one is a keeper. [Drakelist] Drake 2B anomaly
I have a Drake 2B that I refurbished and re-aligned a few months ago, and it plays pretty well on all bands. The only thing that seems a little strange is when the passband control is set to 1, and the preselector is off-tuned or if there is no antenna connected (low atmospheric noise), it sounds different than the passband control is set to 2. It's hard to describe, but it sounds a little like it wants to whistle or oscillate or something like that. Maybe a little tinny. (It doesn't really oscillate though). Another weird thing is that it is mostly just with the AVC in slow position that it sounds like what I've been describing. When the AVC is in Fast position, Passband 1 and 2 sound a lot closer to each other. When I'm listening to stations or a high atmospheric noise level (AVC Slow or Fast), the problem, or anomaly is not very noticeable at all. I positioned the passband knob so the pitch is pretty much the same at positions 1 and 2 on all three selectivity positions, although it was a slight compromise to get them all close. I have a friend that has a 2B, and he is experiencing the same thing. I guess it's possible that they all do that, but I had a 2B back in the 60's and 70's, and I don't remember than happening. I probably wasn't as fussy when I was that young though. This isn't any big deal, but I was just wondering if anyone else with a 2B ever noticed what I described, or maybe someone with a receiver that has a similar passband control / selectable IF filter circuitry. [Drakelist] Drake 2B paint problems
I recently acquired a 2B that was in fairly decent condition, but the cabinet needed a paint job to look good because it had several little scratches and blemishes. Anyway, after sanding the whole cabinet down, priming it, and spraying it with Rustoleum Satin Black paint, It came out pretty nice looking, I let it sit for close to a week before putting the radio back in the cabinet. The problem is, no matter how gently I put the radio back in the cabinet, the paint on the inside bottom of the cabinet gets scratched badly. Mostly in two places - bottom left and bottom right. Just the front 3/4 or so. I originally thought it was the chassis scraping it, but I found out it's mostly the bottom of the front panel. (the edges were kind of sharp, but I subsequently sanded them lightly). If I try touching up the scratched areas with a brush or Q-tip, those spots are still very noticeable, and don't look too good. After re-sanding and re-spraying the inside bottom several times, I finally found out that if I put painter's tape along the inside bottom (front) of the cabinet, I can slide the radio back into the cabinet extremely carefully, and still have the paint intact. (I managed to do it once anyway). Now I'm afraid of ever taking the radio back out of the cabinet for fear of getting the paint scratched. I know the original paint was much more durable, but I believe they used a powder-type paint. I'm not sure if the paint is ever going to harden to the point that it won't easily be scratched, or should I maybe consider using an expensive spray paint that is supposed to be real tough and actually harden to the point that it can take a slight bit of abuse. I don't have the luxury of having an oven, compressor, spray gun, or other professional painting equipment. Al - Most all 2-Bs have those scratches! :-) The new ones were painted, not powder coated. One thing that will help is to bake the paint. An hour or so in a 125 - 150 degree oven will really harden it up. If the XYL won't let you use the kitchen oven for an hour or so, (not all that unusual!), a decent job can be done in several hours with a cardboard box and a 100W light bulb. But hurry, while you can still FIND a 100W light bulb! I repainted a Teletype machine cabinet many years ago with spray paint, baked the smaller pieces in the oven, and baked the big cabinet with 'brooder' (heat) lamps, moving them around to heat the entire cabinet over a day or two. 30 years later that paint is still unscratched. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 2-C/2-NT, 4-B, C-Line TR-4/C Service Supplement CDs www.k4oah.com Schichler, Alfred (GE Energy Services) wrote: I recently acquired a 2B that was in fairly decent condition, but the cabinet needed a paint job to look good because it had several little scratches and blemishes. Al - Most all 2-Bs have those scratches! :-) The new ones were painted, not powder coated. One thing that will help is to bake the paint. [Drakelist] Drake 2B paint problems
Thanks for the info. Several people have recommended that I bake the paint, so I think I'll try that. I do have a gas stove in the basement with an oven that is rarely used for food, so I'll try it with that. If I use it for baking paint, does that mean I should never use it again for food, or should I just burn off any remaining paint fumes before using it to cook food? The scratches in my 2-B were really big (gouges), not just fine scratches. I could probably live with those. Hopefully it won't scratch as deep if it hardens some. I'll make sure to use the painter's tape again when I slide the radio back into the cabinet. 73, Al Al - Most all 2-Bs have those scratches! :-) The new ones were painted, not powder coated. [Drakelist] Drake 2B or 2A knobs wanted
I was wondering if anyone has any spare 2B, 2A, or 2BQ/2AQ knobs that they would want to part with. I think the knobs might be the same on the 2C also, but not sure. [Drakelist] Drake 2B
Hi All, I just acquired a Drake 2B for my vintage station. I am totally blind and wonder if anyone has a manual in a non scanned format such as a plain .PDF or text you might share with me electronically? My screen reader will not read the maps off of BAMA or other image files. Also, since I don't have a manual yet, if someone could explain how I might find out what bands are covered by extra crystals that are in this radio, I would appreciate it very much. Finally, I would like to find crystals that would put it on 160 meters as well as a couple of my favorite short wave bands. If anyone on list has some crystals, please let me know. Otherwise, where is the best place to order them. Thanks all and very 73. [Drakelist] Drake 2B crystal prices
Just as an FYI, the following web page allows one to calibrate current pricing against what things used to cost: _http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm_ (http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm) In 1962, Drake sold 2B accessory crystals for $5.00 each (per the 2B manual). There is no mention of a shipping charge although there may have been one (postage). Using the calculator above, the 2010 equivalent price per crystal is $36.09 plus shipping. The fact that the actual base price for said crystals today seems to run between $16 - $25 each probably reflects improved efficiency in the manufacturing process. It is also worth remembering that Drake's original $5 price may have reflected an economy of scale if they ordered them in quantity, whereas we today are ordering them (if from a crystal manufacturer) specially made, one at a time. Had the latter been the case in 1962 they *might* have cost more than $5 each, which might make today's typical price all the more attractive since the 2010 equivalent of the 1962 one-off manufactured price would be somewhat higher than the $36 estimate noted above. So, IMHO today's prices are quite reasonable. Paul, K4MSG ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
[Drakelist] Drake 2B Osc Section not working.
I found a mint looking Drake 2B that came with the original 3 crystals for 40, 20 and 10 meters. The problem is that I just receive white noise on the 80 meter band but with the band switched on 40 meters I can receive 80 meters fine and hear 80 on 20 and 10 also but very weak. The freq tracks perfect for 80 meters while band switched to 40 (confirmed with another receiver). So, the crystal osc doesn't seem to be working. Don't think its a tube after checking tubes and doing a little swapping so must be a problem in the crystal osc section (did the neg volt test on lug next to V2 and it stayed positive (not oscillating). I also did voltage checks on tubes V1-V4 but had to use a DVM. Had +1.95v on pin 8 and +.49mv on pin 9 of V2. Also +3.26 on Pin 1 of V3. Those were the only readings that didn't seem right? Is it possible that a golden screwdriver got to it? Any suggestions on where to look? [drakelist] Drake 2B How to make a basket case look like an plane Jane..
Jim F. [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hi John - K5MO, and John, W1JA; Nice to hear from you... Turned on Tubie (My name for the 2B) and it worked fine tonight. Here at the cottage, am surrounded by HV AC wiring which is sometimes very noisy. Wonder if the AC line is used for other things besides power (BPL) ? I am staying at a beach cottage and my fun project has been the 2B and a TS-430S and I must say that the 2B is a lot more fun to fix. Don't know where to start... Let everything dry well between stages (hair dryer OK) For the the front panel, remove it, wash gently with soap and water, rinse and dry. sand rust carefully to get rid of loose rust. Apply Rust Converter from Walmart. Converts rust to a black, paintable, sandable primer. Fill in the pits with Bondo Glazing Putty (Walmart) and sand. Repeat till smooth. Mask then spray with Krylon semi-flat #1613, and/or apply with q-tip or toothpick. (I used flat black and it is not a very perfect match) *IMPORTANT: Lettering on rear of glass faceplate is protected with clear spray that will cloud up if you disturb it. CLEAN CAREFULLY ! WARM WATER ONLY AND DO NOT RUB. I found that out :-( Front panel screws: Sand, pick out rust, and paint. Punch holes in bottom of yogurt cup and stick screws in to paint. Glossy black #1601 really looks good on screws. I had to sand and use concentrater on bottom front, sides and back of chassis. I then painted halfway up the rear of the chassis. Looks kinda macho, and better than rust. Replace all rusty screws and RF connector with shiny ones. Case..I had to straighten front edge with a big C clamp. Will have to re-touch up case again with semi-flat this time :-( Q-tips were used and If it comes out looking worse than the panel, will repaint it. It looks easy - no lettering :-) Knobs: Soak over night in Fantastic. Scrape rust with a small screwdriver. Apply Rust Converter with a toothpick. Purch. chrome washers, metric size cost more but look better. (ACE Hardware around here, bring knob with you and pick a good size) Washers are twice the width of chrome ring but look 100% better than rust. Super glue washers to knob. Center carefully. Red fingernail polish spruced up the little plastic faceplate do-hicky. Dial backround: Walmart Krylon Satin Touch #3510 Ivory Satin. Flip the dial pointer up and out of the way. Wash, Lightly sand, wash again, mask carefully and spray the visible section. Looks spectacular and matches the meter almost perfectly. Lubricate moving parts with (expensive) Tri-Flow teflon Superior Lubricant. Liquid dries up leaving a teflon coating on bearings. Buy replacement Capacitors from Unique Radio Parts, LLC...Look it up on Google. Save the old Capacitor can. You might want to cut it to replace caps on a mint 2B. I think that is it. Let me know what you think. Hard to make a silk purse from a sow's ear but fun (and only about $90 worth of stuff) to make the 2B presentable and worthy of a spot on your bench or in your mind. I will be on the lookout to upgrade mine if a better one magically appears. 72/73 Jim / W1FMR --- john [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: john [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- One of my 2B's is also a real dog...rusty on the edges, chassis very pitted, chips off the front panel. [drakelist] Drake 2B front panel removal
Hello, I'm in the middle of removing the front panel from a Drake 2B. Everything is off except the Pass band selector switch (the pointer for .5, 2.1 and 3.6 khZ). I cannot see anyway to remove it to remove thepointer short of the completely disassembling the passband assemby. That is something that I don't want to do. Has anyone removed the front panel before? Thank you in advance.

Hello, Freeberg, Scott (STP) [EMAIL PROTECTED]! Yes, it would have been nice if there had been a matching transmitter for the 2A, or 2B. I wonder if there had been any talk about that at the time. I have always had, in the back of my mind, a project: take a junker 2-NT (chassis wise) and rebuild it into a 2-B style case to match a 2-B. Then maybe build a VFO into a 2-BS speaker case.. would be nice to have a real 2-B Line ! --Andy [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - subscribe drakelist in body Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ --
Re: [drakelist] Drake 2B
Hi everybody, I see that there have been a few postings regarding the 2-B with background in the auctions on ebay recently. The 2-B is a wonderful receiver to use, and I have quite a few Drake receivers and transceivers to compare with. Actually, I do have them all ! And that include the commercial ones too. Well, 2-B is not the best, but it's fantasic, having that time's technology in mind. And if you wonder who bought the 2-B and the 2-BQ, I can tell you that I did that. I recently bought a NIB RV-3 vfo from the same seller. I've got that one already, and it looks like it has been made today! The ended auctions of the RV-3, 2-B and the 2-BQ can still be found here if you would like to take a look: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=3075686292category=4671 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=3078443152category=4673 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=48709item=3078444065 I have by the way the 2-B and the 2-C serial no. 1 receivers too. I'm going to have a slide presentation of Drake protypes and some other very rare models at the Drake Forum that is taking place at the Dayton Hamvention in May. I hope to see many of you there! RE: [drakelist] Drake 2B
A few years ago at a small local hamfest (still lived in NY State) someone had a nice Drake 1A receiver for sale for $85! The owner was busy talking to someone about some other equipment, and not wanting to wait (thinking I may be missing something else...), I walked away and looked at stuff on a few other vendors' tables. I ended up buying a nice Hammarlund HQ-170VHF receiver for $100 and the seller took out another box and said: this goes with the receiver. In the box there were the Heathkit MT-1 Cheyenne transmitter and MR-1 Comanche receiver mobile twins with manuals and power supply. You win some and you lose some... 73, Meir WF2U Gowensville, SC -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mark Nace Sent: Tuesday, February 24, 2004 9:23 PM To: Freeberg, Scott (STP); [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:Re: [drakelist] Drake 2B A couple of years ago at a hamfest, a fellow had a TR-3 still in the box.mint copper, mint everything. I saw one purchased 3 years ago, at the Cary NC hamfest, WITH original speaker and manual in very very nice shape, for $40. Re: [drakelist] Drake 2B
The two line is one of the most undervalued (this auction notwithstanding!) rigs around. Triple conversion, variable passband tuning (B model)... an outstanding CW receiver in a compact box. I've got representative versions of the A , B and C editions, and the B is the cream of the crop. 73 John K5MO At 02:46 PM 2/24/04 -0800, DAN COTSIRILOS wrote: Never liked the 2 line never will! - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 24, 2004 12:41 PM Subject: [drakelist] Drake 2B Did you all see the NIB Drake 2B come and go on epay? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=3078443152category=4673; sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AITrd=1 I knew better than to even bid. RE: [drakelist] Drake 2B
Whoa, now that price is an eye-opener. No I didn't see that one come and go. Its not being shipped to my house either :) It sure looks gorgeous. I've always thought the 2A/2B receivers look great. I still have a 2A and I think it works good and sounds nice. Maybe there's something wrong with my 2BQ but I don't see that Q-multipler as doing much. For a really classy Drake radio though I still have to say the 1A is incredible. It sounds great, it looks interesting - well ok, oddly interesting :) and that pass band tuning is effective. I've used the passband tuning in the 75A4 and was pleasantly surprised with the 1A passband tuning as well. 73, Scott WA9WFA -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - subscribe drakelist in body Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ --
Re: [drakelist] Drake 2B
The two line is one of the most undervalued (this auction notwithstanding!) rigs around. I agree. I think the 2-B is a great receiver, chassis corrosion and all. Now a kilobuck for one is a different issue altogether, but then how often does a NIB radio come along? From the point of view of a serious collector (of anything .. radios, fine art, whatever), that may not seem like a bad price at all. Re: [drakelist] Drake 2B
Hey John, I have to agree with you. I have a 2B and a 2C. I prefer the 2B. It works great and is a joy to use. i only wish they had made a transmitter that matched it. My 2C sits pretty next to the 2NT and I use them a lot too. I have a 4 line (B line) left. I used to have a C line as well. I would have to say my B line is the shack favorite. All are wonderful receivers. The 2B is easier to tune than the 2C. 2C tunes kind of fast. RE: [drakelist] Drake 2B
I've always chuckled when I would set that tiny little 2A receiver next to a jumbo transmitter of the same period. I was always afraid the jumbo transmitter wuz going to fall on the tiny receiver and squish it : Yes, it would have been nice if there had been a matching transmitter for the 2A, or 2B. I wonder if there had been any talk about that at the time. I never had a 2B. I thought I had one sitting one the shelf until I went to sell it last week. I snapped a photo, sent it to a potential buyer, and he points out its a 2A. :) Well I'll be. All this time I thought I had a 2B sitting on the shelf :) Yes, that 2C and 2NT are a sweet looking pair. I was a Novice when that setup came out in 1967 or 1968. Drake never made a vfo for that pair either. You would have thought they'd be following up with a vfo. 73, SCott WA9WFA -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - subscribe drakelist in body Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ --

[drakelist] Drake 2B, 2AC, Q-mult, manual
I still have the 2B for sale. Cost $175 plus shipping from Dayton Ohio area. If you think that too high, tell me what you would offer. Includes: - 2B receiver, with 80, 40, 20, 15, 10 (28-28.5, 28.5-29.1), and 3 extra XTALS 19.3-19.9 Mhz, 9.4-10.0, 9.9-10.5 or 17.5-18.0 based on socket position used. - 2AC Xtal Calibrator - QXer Q-multiplier - 2B manual with 1 page and schematic copied, rest original - QXer paper manual and preliminary doc, I am told the preliminary doc is rather unique. Both are original. - extra preselector knob. Was going to extract the inlay from this knob to put on the bandwidth knob which is missing its inlay. Overall condition would be 5 out of 10 due to wear on the lettering around the bandwidth and BFO switch, and 1 knob missing the silver inlay. The cabinet has some missing paint around the front edges. Copper has mild spotting. Has worked for 20 odd years without any issues. I have never tuned it up, just used it. It has a speaker attached inside the cabinet with nylon wire ties, so that if can be used stand alone. This was part of a Novice station, but had not been used as such for over 15 years. I had it attached to an 80 Meter dipole this weekend, and it worked on all crystals as well as on 80 meters. It could likely use a good tuneup, but works as is.
