[Elecraft] K3 firmware load
Good Morning, My K3 will not come out of the mcu ld state and will not load the latest firmware. I have removed the power ,loaded the latest utility, and tried several times to load firmware, but to no avail. I reconnected the power and it is still locked in mcu ld. Any suggestions ? Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware load
Sure. There's a K3 Utility Help topic on this in the most recent K3 Utility version. See K3 Help, Troubleshooting, MCU Load Failure. Here's what the Help Text says (it's formatted better and there is a picture in the Help Text) MCU Boot Loader Troubleshooting When MCU firmware load is interrupted, or the power-on firmware checksum test fails, the K3 enters its permanent bootstrap loader. You can also force the K3 to enter its permanent bootstrap loader by turning the K3 on with a 10-second press of the power on switch. The MCU boot loader displays MCU LD on the K3 front panel LCD. LCD backlighting is normally off in this condition, so the screen appears dark in dim light. In order to load K3 firmware in this state, follow these steps in sequence. Turn off your K3 by switching off its power supply or removing the 12V power connector from the back panel. The K3's MCU can continue to run at very low voltage, and it's important that it start from a power-on reset. For this reason, it may be necessary to wait 30 seconds or so after removing power before power is turned on again. If you have a P3 panadaptor, remove its power plug so that the P3 does not power on, even for a moment, when you subsequently apply K3 power. Current P3 firmware sends commands during P3 initialization that disturb the K3 MCU boot loader. A future P3 firmware version will remove this constraint, but for now, unplug the P3 power if you find yourself in this situation. If the K3 Utility is running, select the Port tab, and then close the K3 Utility, using the File Exit menu item or select the red X at the top right of the main window. When the K3 Utility is started the next time, the Port tab provides the clearest indication of a successful connection. If you are using a sharing program or device between the host personal computer and your K3's RS-232 port (e.g. N8LP's LP-Bridge or microHAM's Router), change the cabling so that the host PC is connected directly to the K3 without an intervening software or hardware forwarder. These programs send K3 programmer's reference commands, and a K3 in its bootstrap loader isn't yet able to process those commands. Some of the commands might put the K3 bootstrap loader into an unresponsive state. Restart (reboot) the personal computer that will run the K3 Utility This isn't often necessary, but occasionally a serial port or USB device driver doesn't properly close when commanded to do so. Rebooting reinitializes the device and its driver. Restore K3 power and press the K3 power button. You should expect to see MCU LD in an otherwise dark LCD, and the red Tx light should be blinking. Start the K3 Utility and navigate to its Port tab. The K3 Utility should find the K3 at at 38,400 bps. If the Port tab is selected, you should see a K3 Status popup that looks something like this: (picture can't be pasted into a straight text message) If you don't see this status dialog, try pressing Test Communications. If you don't see this dialog, the K3 Utility is not receiving responses to K3 commands, and it cannot load firmware without responses. Information in USB to Serial Adapter Troubleshooting may help to resolve this issue. The problem might be serial port cabling, an incorrect COM port choice, a problem with the Personal Computer, or the K3's internal KIO3 Interface. Once you see this dialog, press the OK button on the K3 Status dialog to continue. If the View Menu Trace menu item is checked, firmware load can take quite a long time. Uncheck Trace unless you require this diagnostic information. Select the Firmware tab, and click Send All New Firmware to K3. The K3 Utility should send MCU firmware to your K3, followed by any other new firmware required. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of mark crossland Sent: Sunday, December 12, 2010 1:23 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 firmware load Good Morning, My K3 will not come out of the mcu ld state and will not load the latest firmware. Bob, Yes I did see your post thanks, but have not yet had the opportunity to digest your results - but I will. When you made these measurements, what settings did you use for the 'audio' Hi-cut and Lo-cut? My thinking was that I would first look at the SA612's output wile injecting multiple signals, and then do the same at suitable points along the signal path as it made its way to the audio output. By doing this it should be possible to find the weakest link in the chain (in terms of IMD), and then attempt to do something to improve the 'weak link's' performance. [Elecraft] APF
It's been a while since the APF has really pulled out a signal for me that was otherwise impossible to copy. As W4ZV has said, its effectiveness seems dependent on the band condx (QRN vs signal strengths, etc). This morning the APF allowed a weak V73QQ to pop out of the noise on 160M. Tuning with APF is very critical (width is only 30hz) and I use the K3's fine vfo tuning rather than shift. Or how about this. You could buy a pretty much loaded K3 *AND* a 7700 for what a 7800 costs. I hate to open up the K4 discussion again, but a K3,P3,KPA500, wrapped up in a QRO box with more spread out switchcraft, large dual speakers, and band buttons seems like a no brainer. First. I have a 4xxx series K3, built by Elecraft that is fully outfitted and filtered running LP-Pan, an EMU-0202 and a MicroHam Station Master. Second, I have been operating an IC-7700 for the past 2 yrs. That being said I have run both rigs side-by-side into a IC-PW1 and Palstar AT-Auto. I must say that each radio has its own benefits and is outstanding to operate, but here is where the K3 shines: 1. True dual VFO/dual receive; 2. Easy MARS modification (yes, I am a licensed AF MARS Operator); 3. IF out. LP-Pan and PowerSDR are outstanding; 4. ESSB - of course with the proper filtering being installed; 5. Tx Eq and Noise Gate - No out-board W2IHY EQ is needed (sorry Julius); 6. Light weight; 7. Unbelievable receive audio with the appropriate filtering; 8. Menu flexibility;and 9. Easy updating of firmware. Candidly, I still love and use the IC-7700, but more and more I am utilizing the K3. The K3 is an outstanding value and robust transceiver. As a separate matter (a bit of a rant here), and for example having seen the ARRL and Sherwood engineering reports regarding the FTDX-5000. We as hams are always in search of nirvana. While I have heard the issues regarding the FTDX-5000 design that have not made the mainstream press, the issue here is not to bash Yaesu, but to congratulate and thank Wayne and Eric for the OUTSTANDING job, not only with the design and operation of the K3, but their support of the user group to identify issues and improvements and their outstanding customer support when you call them for assistance. Re: [Elecraft] An AGC Story
Speaking of criticism, I've done my share of complaining about AGC pumping and pileup mush in the K3. That said, it's still the best contest receiver I've ever use, by a wide margin. It's sensitive, quiet and incredibly selective. In fact, I can get *too* close to adjacent stations without realizing it! In actual contest conditions, the AGC pumping can be reduced to more-or-less acceptable levels by using the 8-pole 400 Hz filter. It becomes a non-problem with the 5-pole 200 Hz filter. I suspect it could be reduced even more by increasing the HAGC threshhold, but evidently not without changing other components in the chain to avoid increased IMD. IMHO, the pileup mush is no worse than any other receiver I've used, and most of the time it's better (that sounds strange, but you know what I mean.) Considering that I had quite a few hours with my rate meter near 200/hr in CQ WW CW, I'd have to say the mush isn't reducing my rate a whole lot. One clue is that the mush effect is most noticable when there's a pileup of relatively weak signals and there's not a nearby strong station -- i.e., when the HAGC is not activated. If most of the signals are at the same pitch, it's mush. A bunch of really weak signals like that are simply darned hard to copy, and I'm beginning to think that no receiver can separate them unless AGC is turned off, with the attendant problem of ears being blown out when a strong station drops by. I have found, however, that the situation improves considerably with diversity reception using two antennas with opposite polarity. There's enough difference in the ever-changing arrival angles to be able to distinguish weak signals at the same pitch. No other receiver can do that for me. 73, Dick WC1M -Original Message- From: Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy [mailto:gm4...@btinternet.com] Sent: Sunday, December 12, 2010 6:30 AM To: Bob Henderson Cc: Elecraft Discussion List Subject: Re: [Elecraft] An AGC Story Bob, Yes I did see your post thanks, but have not yet had the opportunity to digest your results - but I will. Re: [Elecraft] XG2 Frequency Accuracy
Dave, I would expect the frequency to be within a couple hundred Hz of the frequency on the crystal. Yes, you should be able to pad the frequency down with a small parallel capacitor, just like any VXO. I don't know how much range you would get without adding a series inductor to the bottom side on the crystal. Experiment with it and see what you get. Actually, I think it would be easier to just build a VXO or two - manhatten construction is quite easy to do, just cut some pads for the parts of the circuit that need to be isolated from ground and glue them to a PC Board ground plane - alternately, use high value resistors (4.7 megohms for instance) to serve as insulators and build it using Wes Hayward's Ugly Construction techniques. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/12/2010 12:23 AM, David Gilbert wrote: Yeah, I understand that. [Elecraft] Fwd: An AGC Story
Sorry Geoff. My setup is fairly basic but I believe quite adequate. I use two +10dBm low noise xtal oscillators operated within the 40m band. The output of each is attenuated 20dB before combining via a Minicircuits SCP-2-1. Thereafter the signals pass through an 8MHz LPF to a step attenuator. The SCP-2-1 provides around 33dB port to port isolation at 7MHz. Isolation between the oscillator output stages is therefore around 73dB. 73 Bob, 5B4AGN On 12 December 2010 10:04, Guy Olinger K2AV olin...@bellsouth.net wrote: Thank you, Bob. [Elecraft] RFI from computer
Was playing in the 10m contest this weekend and had noise (like a dirty, hashy carrier, similar to TV-generated noise) every 5-10 kHz as I tuned the band. When I turned my laptop off, it went away. My laptop is about 4 ft from the radio and about 25 ft from my balcony dipole. Any thoughts on how to decrease the noise? [Elecraft] K3 Questions and gripes
Hi folks; Yes, I really love my K3 in spite of my questions and gripes; here they are: 1. During the 10 meter contest, I was up around 28.400 operating SSB with the NB on, when I noticed that I was getting a strong CW signal pumping my AGC (or so it seemed). In doing a little research, I found the cw station responsible was down at 28.023, at about S9+40 db; by call, I know the station and that he is about 3 miles away. Far enough and weak enough that I should not be receiving this sort of interference I think, given there are no key clicks, etc. I turn off the NB, and it clears up completely, even 500Hz away, let alone 300 or 400 KHz away. I go back up, no problem except I want to use the NB; turn it back on, problem re-appears. This seems to be an artifact of how the NB is implemented, rendering it useless under these sorts of circumstances. Am I missing something, out of adjustment, or ??? 2. The power switch - early serial number (1476); my power switch - well the rubber / plastic part you press on - is starting to look like a mouse has nibbled on it, with little divots falling off along the top and right side edges. It is looking quite ragged. Has anyone else had this, or know if I can replace just the rubber/plastic part, or do I need to replace the entire switch assembly? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Questions and gripes
This is the way most analog noise blankers work. They look at a wide bandwidth to detect noise pulses and if there are loud signals in the range they can be interpreted as noise. The K3 has both an analog and a DSP noise blanker. If there are large nearby signals, you should reduce the aggressiveness of the analog (or 'IF') blanker. You can do this by holding the NB button and then turning the VFO A knob. The DSP noise blanker -- which will not be affected by off-frequency signals -- is adjusted with the VFO B knob. Depending on the type of noise and signals on the band, you will want to use different 'mixes' of analog and DSP noise blanker adjustments. Regarding the power switch, I've found that a cat is highly effective at reducing nibbling by mice (just kidding, ask Elecraft for a fix)! On 12/12/2010 7:59 AM, David F. Re: [Elecraft] Is the P3 Now Shipping From Stock or Backordered?
I think it is virtually from stock at the present time. A week ago Friday I finally scratched the P3 itch I had been suffering from for some time and ordered a factory assembled unit. It arrived the following Wednesday via two day air. That means they either had one in stock or assembled it either the same day or the next day after my order. That's about the best service you can expect. Incidentally, I think you'll love it. It really works very well. About the only problem I've encountered so far is my cat who sits on the operating desk and observes the signals going up and down on the P3. I managed to catch him just before he was ready to lunge at the unit. Since he is a big cat I think he would have damaged it had a smashed into it. My life has definitely been complicated when operating CW with one hand and trying to restrain the cat with my other. About the only thing that appears to be missing from the P3 is CAT control which I clearly am in need of. A perusal of the owner's manual does not mention that. I guess it is time to evict him from the premises. Have a great trip for the contest. In view of the weather outside right now I wish I could join you. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Questions and gripes
If you look at the K3 schematic you can see that the noise blanker takeoff point is at the output of the first post mixer amplifier. The bandwidth here is necessarily wide. In the blanker itself, there is a double-tuned bandpass filter at the input of the noise amplifier(s). I don't know what the bandwidth of this is, but to minimize the effects on the risetime of noise pulses, it should be as broad as possible. There are then a couple of opportunities for mischief. 1) Strong signals get into the noise amplifier and overdrive the first stage 2) Any signal getting into the noise amplifier that is strong enough to exceed the blanking threshold looks like noise and generates blanking pulses. That is simply the nature of the beast. Wes N7WS --- On Sun, 12/12/10, David F. Re: [Elecraft] Raves about the K3
Congratulations on your purchase of the K-3. I have two of them. Both are fully outfitted as well is a K2/100 which I built several years ago. The K-3s are simply outstanding. I just acquired a P3 41 of them and that works extremely well. I also have an FTDX 5000 MP. That is an excellent radio and as you mentioned it does have its strong points. Its main receiver is extremely good. But as you noted its second receiver is not as good. It does not use the roofing filters which are available to the main receiver and, unlike the main receiver its first IF is in the VHF region so that narrow crystal roofing filters would probably not be very effective. As you know, the story is quite different with the K-3. In fact, I am not aware of any other radio offering two receivers with identical, outstanding characteristics. And of course, the company is just outstanding to deal with. Not only are their products cutting edge but they know how to treat and deal with customers. I think that will certainly ensure a long and prosperous future for Elecraft. Incidentally, I was a member of AF Mars for many years but finally resigned about three years ago because of lack of activity on 1S1. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 update?
I seem to remember that Elecraft said it was currently in field tests. I also think a possible February, 2011 date was mentioned as a sales target. I'm sure that is subject to revision, depending upon the outcome of the field tests as well as the usual hassle in setting up the new production line. But I believe it is definitely going to happen and not in the very distant future but not, unfortunately, in time for this Christmas. Re: [Elecraft] Raves about the K3
Bruce: I agree with all points made in your email. Candidly, when I first got the K3, I did have a bit of a learning curve, but wow, it is now a lot of fun to operate! With anticipated permission of the moderator, regarding AF MARS, I would like to make the following comments since there had been much in the way of program changes over the past 3 years. First, there is a newer MOI and inter-service SOP for voice nets, so all MARS services can interoperate on each other's frequencies and NCS. Second, the mission of MARS has been upgraded to the Military Auxiliary Radio System instead of Military Affiliate Radio System. The major change in focus is the ability to respond to man-made and natural disasters (EEI and ECOM) not just passing military traffic. Third, CW is back. While the US military may have phased out CW as a mode, MARS (all 3 programs)view CW in the realm of a viable mode of communication (under the digital domain), especially in emergency situations, and accordingly, there are now CW nets. Lastly, to conform to FEMA regions, the former region 1 as you knew it has been realigned as have the other AF MARS Regions, and the entire US is now aligned into six area's which manage the new AF MARS FEMA aligned regions. I appreciate and thank you for your comments. I also wish to thank the moderators for their patience regarding my AF MARS posting. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Am carrier suppression on SSB
A K3 is a digital radio. There is no balanced modulator for SSB with a balance adjustment. The SSB envelope is directly created (without any carrier or opposite sideband, only digital artifacts) in number stream form by digital programs in firmware. The SSB envelope first emerges, fully formed, at the TX IF, formed from the number stream that is input to the TX Digital to Analog Converter. This is clear in the schematics on the web page. The closest carrier that could have a vestigial output would be the 8 meg conversion frequency that is used to convert the signal from 15 kHz up to the 8 meg filter frequencies. That would be 15 kHz away and suppressed by the ultimate rejection loss of the roofing filter used for TX SSB. It would not be mistaken as an unsupressed carrier, even if it could be heard. What is more likely, is that a 120 Hz or 60 Hz hum is on the audio and getting through. Deadkey SSB, one of these could be mistaken for unsuppressed carrier. That will require cleaning up the audio wiring or power supply, taking care of pin 1 problems, etc. 73, Guy. [Elecraft] K2 Front Panel Board
I am up to page 29 on the K2 assembly manual, working on assembly of the Front Panel Kit, where it talks about uninstalled components. I do have the KSB2 SSB adapter kit. So I looked through the kit for the nine listed components and located all but two. These two components might be here, but I can not identify them. RP3, 10k resistor network. By process of elimination of resistor packs in the kit, I have a resistor pack with a number L836103 Y43 on it. That number does not match up with the part number listed, or its alternative part number. It is red in color and has eight pins. Could this be RP3? The other component I can not locate is P1. IT is a microphone configuration connector. There is no picture of it and the location for it on the back side of the Front Panel board is not much help. Looks like there are four holes in the circuit board, but I could not find anything in the KSB2 kit that had four pins, unless it is in the small paper envelop, where I have not yet looked. Re: [Elecraft] Raves about the K3
Where CW operators are still active, some ARMY MARS operations has made room for them. I've not been involved with military comms recently, but found a report that Army MARS has launched a test of CW nets in four Midwestern states after recognizing how it could have been a major asset in disasters like Hurricane Katrina. In one exercise it was used to link the Transport Security Agency (TSA) with the Army HQ at FT. Huachuca, Arizona. It all depends upon how many operators are available. CW is still the most reliable digital text mode on the air *IF* trained operators are available. That's exactly what killed CW on the high seas. There it was economic to avoid the cost of hiring operators with CW skills. Ron AC7AC -Original Message- Bruce, I've heard that the military has discontinued CW training for communications. [Elecraft] 2.8 kHz filter tilt
Hi again, A little while ago I wrote the message below. I am still searching for ways to compensate for the tilt in my new 2.8kHz crystal filter. One way would be to have a way to set the RX equalizer through a serial command / macro. Is this going to happen soon? Another way would be to have the RX equalizer settings stored by mode so they could be different for USB and LSB. Is this going to happen soon? Am I really asking too much here? Re: [Elecraft] 2.8 kHz filter tilt
I sometimes marvel at the number of different directions Elecraft gets pulled with respect to the K3. I can't imagine two more polar opposite message threads than this one and the recent ones discussing AGC action. I'm not trying to overtly judge the merits of either camp, but one is trying to optimize the rig as an audiophile piece of equipment by eliminating 4db of passband tilt on single strong signals in a conversational setting and the other is trying to optimize its communication capabilities by eliminating IMD mush on multiple low level signals in a contest setting. Hopefully for the sake of Wayne, Eric, Lyle and company schizophrenia is not an acquired disease ... 73, Dave AB7E On 12/12/2010 3:18 PM, ab2tc wrote: Hi again, A little while ago I wrote the message below. But the difference is still there. These two links show the noise spectrum of the receiver in USB and LSB. http://ab2tc.getmyip.com:8000/pictures/usb.png http://ab2tc.getmyip.com:8000/pictures/lsb.png In USB there is a definite upward tilt of the passband and the opposite for LSB. This is quite audible. Is this normal and is there anything I can do about it (other than asking Elecraft to add by mode equalizer)? Re: [Elecraft] 2.8 kHz filter tilt
I think you should save your money. Apparently, they appear to have a lot, if not all, filters that behave this way. Short of having a more symmetrical filter in place the two sidebands aren't ever going to sound the same. I know that theory says we shouldn't be able to hear a difference, but it's quite audible and quite annoying to me. Re: [Elecraft] Raves about the K3
Don: If you are referring to Tx settings (not Rx settings), please note the my mic is a Marshall MXL R144 Ribbon Mic, which goes into a Behringher Ultragain-Pro MIC-2200 tube pre-amp, then into a Behringher Ultra-Curve DEQ2496 (set up in the manner as suggested by NU9N), from there, I use an NCS multi-switcher to determine what radio is to be tx’d. Currently, the K3 is set to FL2 (6Hz AM Filter), with Tx ESSB turned on (using BW usually between 3.0 to 3.2), Tx Gate at 25, The Tx eq follows: 50hz = +6; 100hz = +2; 200hz = -2; 400hz = -6; 800hz = -2; 1600hz = +0; 2400hz = +3; and 3200hz = +5. I do run compression on the K3 at 19. How this was determined was actually utilizing the NU9N settings for the DEQ-2496 and then relying on a group of hams that I have known for years that have heard my voice on several other radios, over the telephone and in-person to adjust the Eq on the K3. That is how we arrived at those settings. Did I answer your question? Re: [Elecraft] Re: Raves about the K3
Hi Johnny: I have read your posts, private emails to me and I certainly respect your opinions. Like I've said below, I love each radio for different reasons. But, I am not looking to nit-pick either radio. I was just stating some of the more pronounced differences that I find favorable with the K3 and why I purchased it over any other radio as a second radio in my shack alongside of my IC-7700. Candidly, I am not interested in cross-posting my comments to the IC-7700 reflector or granting copyright to permit any cross-posting. These are my opinions about 2 very different radio's at 2 very different price points and I am very happy with the functionality of each of them in different settings. In the US the K3 fully outfitted and built by Elecraft is between $2,000 and $2,500 less than the IC-7700. So there is a big price difference. On HF, other than operating on the AF MARS frequencies, I am predominantly a rag-chewer (mainly on 160m very late at night), non-contester/Non-Dx'er (although not my passion, I will chase some rare Dx), conversational CW operator (20m - albeit about 17 wpm). My raves are about the K3 are intended to let the K3 community (and especially Wayne and Eric) know what features are desirable, why they are desirable and to assist and give them some direction from the user community. Re: [Elecraft] Re: Raves about the K3
Jeff, Since the K3, P3 and KPA500 are the same height, you may want to figure out how to attach one to the other (metal strips on the bottom come to mind), so it is all one big unit. Then you could have all that functionality in one package. I will keep mine as separate assemblies, thank you. Re: [Elecraft] Re: Raves about the K3
Hey, now what about a custom desktop case made to match the Elecraft K series equipment with slide in/out drawers (lockable via spring loaded screws) so that one BIG box shack becomes a reality. The huge advantage is IF an issue arises, simply 'pull' the defective item from the box and do what needs to be done but still have a somewhat functional rig IF the K3 is not at fault. I might even consider doing this myself so that for portable use I have just one box to pack up when on the move. Maybe a part number could be K3LB-500...:-) K3 = Radio LB = Large Box 500 = Total output power Aaaah...nice to dream eh? [Elecraft] DL-1 Readings on 432MHz?
OK, I was playing in the 10M contest while I typed that last thread which clearly read like I was doing drugs. So, here it goes again. What reading should I expect on my DL-1 when my it is being fed 20W at 432MHz? Since the instruction sheet says it is good to 225 MHz, I assume that it is way off at 432 MHz. If the DL-1 causes a high VSWR, the XV432 may not be putting out the power it indicates creating another issue. To N8LP: Yes, I do need a good dummy load for 100W at UHF. Re: [Elecraft] Check this out
Ah, nice Tony. I built one of those in 1954 and later added that grid block keyer (on the elevated chassis just visible above the VFO can). Ran it for the next 20+ years, pounding brass 99% of the time. The metal tubes are really 1614's - 6L6's on steroids that were developed for the military during WWII. Like many of the kits available in the 1950's, E.F. Johnson relied heavily on the huge quantities of WWII surplus parts available. The Ranger is an outstanding little rig. Had the pleasure of rebuilding one for a buddy just a couple of years ago. One of those would make a great bootleg AM transmitter, with its plate modulation with negative feedback in the speech amp for outstanding linearity. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for December 12th 13th, 2010
Good Evening, I had to move the database to my new Internet computer and reinstall the software to run it. Now life should be easier (cross fingers here). Currently the connection to the tower at the top of the mountain which provides me with wireless Internet service is not being shut down by the fog. Yesterday at this time it was dropping out and then shut off. The fog was very dense. Propagation was not so hot today. On twenty meters I was hearing a lot of fuzz and on forty it was louder with some QSB. Twenty was not nearly as productive as it has been recently. From what my sister wrote me there is quite a storm coming to Wisconsin. I am unsure if it is related to the weather which passed through here a few days back. Currently it is getting warmer while the rain has eased up just a little. Snow in IN and ND with fog and sun in CA. My sister also mentioned she had her windows and doors open to enjoy the warm day. She lives just off of the Columbia River at a much lower elevation than where I live. Most of my snow has vanished here but if one looks there are a few isolated spots of it. What makes K3 is 90% receiver and 10% transmitter (IMHO). Last time I checked, broadcast stations do not need to receive. What you need is crops duster, K3 is supersonic jet. Of course it has separate grid and plate bandswitches and three tuning controls to adjust, one of which is a multiturn vacuum capacitor, but it's imposing as all get out with four analog meters (2 of which are super-cool Western Electric center-adjust types). I just had my first QSO on my new homebrew amplifier: 900 watts out from a pair of class-C 813's! Instant on and full QSK. Of course it has separate grid and plate bandswitches and three tuning controls to adjust, one of which is a multiturn vacuum capacitor, but it's imposing as all get out with four analog meters (2 of which are super-cool Western Electric center-adjust types). They do indeed seem to be treating it as a serious product on the way. The slides has the obligatory not yet type accepted warning of course. It's definitely well on the way to completion. Several members of local clubs work for Elecraft as part of the engineering team, and are busily doing the final work to get it in production. Things like quantity shipments of the needed parts, training the crew to build it, FCC type acceptance testing, etc. 73, Jim K9YC -- Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
