[Elecraft] KAT 500
Just got my kit today. SN 1234 Pretty cool I might be missing a couple of the tiny split washers. They can easily get stuck in the envelopes with the so239's. A bag of their own might be better if this has been an issue. There were two in my spare parts bag so I think I am ok. No big deal, just providing feedback. I got 4 extra black screws in one package with one of the So239's. I will probably start the build tomorrow. Re: [Elecraft] 2 meter amp for K3 or KX3
Just a comment that I have built W6PQL amps (300w 1296 amp) (better quality than the commercial amps like Mirage). I had forgotten that Jim (Klitzing) had the 80w 2m linear article in QST (here is link to his webpage):.http://www.w6pql.com/2_meter_80w_all_mode_amplifier.htm Note: he offers the pcb with some components pre-installed but it should still be considered a kit (type you solder things together), so is not a ready to use unit. BTW the amplifier module drives with 50mw so even the KX3-2m is able to drive one. Running 1w drive requires a 13-dB input attenuator which can be built-in with the amp. I built some kits for others and with the interest shown here for a 2m amp, would an assembled 2m amp be of interest? I can research the costs to build one these if there is. I can guess the cost will be near the same for a 100w Mirage. 73, Ed - KL7UW http://www.kl7uw.com Kits made by KL7UW Dubus Mag business: dubus...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] 756ProIII vs K3
I just think the bar was raised dramatically when Elecraft released the K3. When I think back to ALL the transceivers I have owned, I distinctly recall that none of them were able to win me over and I was constantly searching for the Best of the Best and I spent enough money to prove that I failed. The list is long, the model numbers are impressive, and even the model numbers were long enough to give the buyer a warm fuzzy feeling while the bank account dwindled to historical levels...:-) One day I got so frustrated with the current pair of transceivers sitting up taking space and not doing what I wanted so i turned to Google (Google is your friend) and Google threw up Elecraft...after I figured out this was not Halicraft or some furfy, I spotted the model # K3 and I got hooked, big time. So the FTdx9000D and FT-2000D went out the door in a heartbeat and I sat with an older TS-450SAT and waited.the K3 started to ship and good Ol #679 rolled into the shack and my journey began. Now most folks that know me probably think I may not be the sharpest knife in the draw, and to prove they are right, I phoned Elecraft, spoke to Wayne I believe, and grumbled that my new K3 came without the Microphone...what kind of operation were they running?. yes, he asked me did I order one, order one I repeated...yep, the penny dropped and I realised I had not read the FULL list of what was needed. So the TS-450 gave up the microphone as it disappeared out the door. Is the K3 the best out there?well in my opinion yes it is, after all, mine is going nowhere soon of that I am sure. I had a pair of PROIII's and a bunch of others that rate on the Sherwood list but nowhere near the top and I reckon the FTdx9000D was better than the PROIII's, BUT, what I premium price! I am portable 24/7 and the K4 or whatever folks like to think will be an Elecraft Base Transceiver will most likely not put in an appearance for me, I have had my share of these types and now I prefer the convenience of the K3 and the superior performance it gives me. If Wayne is reading this and smiling at the memory of the indignant call from Australia questioning why he did not personally ship every K3 with a Microphone I glad I made him smile. Thanks Wayne, the K3 is truly a remarkable transceiver that does pretty much everything to perfection for me. I have about given up on the RF Sensor for the P3. I have asked about it so many times I am sure Wayne and company think I have lost the plot or fixated on it, but, it would be a great addition for me at least. Well that's my story I guess.. 73's to all, Gary On 17 April 2014 14:03, Richard S. Leary w7...@comcast.net wrote: Right on Doug. I love my K-Line. Re: [Elecraft] 756ProIII vs K3
You know, the interesting thing about Elecraft and the K3 in particular is that one can form an opinion of it's superiority ONLY after using it it for a little while. I don't think it can be done by just looking at it. In fact, by just looking at it for a few minutes one forms the exact opposite opinion. When i built my K3 (SN 8086) - i had a bunch of ham buddies come and take a short look at it. I could see it in their faces: this guy's an idiot for paying almost $4300 for THIS?!?!?!? Only one of these guys actually sat down and drove it for a few minutes. He then told everyone that it has to be the quietest and most adjustable receiver he'd ever seen. And naturally people take it with a grain of salt because they'd already seen it and they couldn't possibly be wrong about it, right? But i just smile and grin to myself anytime a conversation about my K3 surfaces. i KNOW what i bought :-) And that's all that matters. Thanks, Elecraft. P.S. BEfore i ordered my K3 - i made Wayne (or Eric) and Lisa promise me that K4 won't be announced any time soon :-) So all this talk about it is premature at best. Sorry. Re: [Elecraft] Got the radio...
Hi, We get hellacious thunderstorms here, I have all antenna cables going to a bulkhead on the exterior wall, which disconnect at that point. During thunderstorm season the cables are ALWAYS kept disconnected unless operating. I made pl/bnc connectors with dead shorts that I leave on the bulkhead connectors. All desk equipment is tied to a common length of 1 copper pipe along back of desk via 1/2 braids. If a bad storm comes thru I unplug the 2 tripplite powerstrips feeding the equipment. Question: wouldn't it make sense to make the 1 braid from the copper pipe on desk to the outside ground rod also detachable? I was thinking one of those plug/receptacles used for the arc wires of large welders. It should handle more current than the braid would tolerate. My thinking is that if the big one directly hits the outside antenna it would be a short trip from the outside ground rod to the inside common ground bar... [Elecraft] K3 First Impressions
Hi all, I thought I might communicate my initial feelings/impressions regarding the K3 vs. the Pro 3. There is no question the K3 is a better receiver than the Pro 3; period! Overall I can hear things on the K3 I was not able to hear on the Pro 3. I did a very short, (didn't take too long to see the difference), A/B, and things on the K3 are clearer, cleaner, and easier to understand, while on the Pro 3, they are buried in noise, and not quite as understandable. CW is a dream on the K3. The dial up filters are marvelous for CW. I can't wait to get familiar enough with the K3 to start pile up running on CW. The K3, (at this time), feels a lot more difficult to operate than the Pro 3, however I am sure this is because I used the Pro 3/2 combo for many numbers of years, and have all of 48 whole hours on the K3. There is a learning curve, but that is fine, I have no issue with that. The book by KE7X is very helpful, and fills a huge hole in documentation that exists for the newcomer to the K3. I also gained a HUGE amount of desktop space, as the Pro 3 had the PS and external Speaker attached to it. I will be putting up a pair of speakers for the K3 later today, on a different shelf. I kind of like the minimalistic look of the operating position now. I coupled the install of the K3, with a full station rebuild. Starting with the grounding system, and ending with little wire hangers so I can pull the desk out and clean behind it as needed. It had been something like 10 years since the last full shack cleanup so you can imagine what it looked like. I have a pile of extra cables now... About the only thing that has me stumped so far is the use of the Sub RX. I suspect it is listening to the RX Antenna input, because I get no signals on it at all. I am sure as I work through things I will find that is the case. I'll post photos on my web page if anyone actually wants to see the installed station. I'll include photos of the back of the station and the cable runs as well. That will be in a week or so. Many thanks to all that helped me select the K3, and answered the large number of questions I had. Re: [Elecraft] 756ProIII vs K3
When I was first looking for a good HF transceiver, as a new ham, I was excited by the colorful and fancy displays of the more expensive HF rigs. I think I glanced at Elecraft, but thought the monochrome display old tech and boring. I was tempted by the ProIII but for cost, and finally settled on an used Icom IC-7000. Well, older and wiser now, the IC-7000 sits unused except for occasional trips to the boat (as an emergency backup) and the K2 and the KX3 get all of the attention, and for good reasons - ease of use and performance. I may yet rationalize getting a K3 in the future, but that will be an indulgence, not a need! And those Elecraft displays seem to be giving me everything I need, at a glance. [Elecraft] K2 knob replacement
I wasn't much interested in paying $100 for a replacement K2 knob nor could I find a source for the Yaesu FT-100 tuning knob.so, I found on eBay a new knob for the Yaesu FT-450 which fit perfectly on the K2 and cost $10. However, the FT-450 tuning knob was a bit small so back to eBay (gota love it!) and I found listed the rubber band for the ICOM 718 for $6. Well, after much grunding and pushing I got the 718 rubber band over the FT-450 knob. I really like the feel of this setup over the original K2 and the finger hole is real not some fake stick-on. If you park on your favorite frequency and yak, it may not be something you value. But if you are a ham that TUNES the bands, the 73CNC knob transforms the feel of the K2. [Elecraft] K3: reduced PWR in Data Mode on 10m only
If I use CW then I get whatever the rig will put out, on 10m. The VSWR shows about 1.3:1 When I switch to Digital then I get about 6w out from 0 to 11w, as indicated when I turn the PWR knob. When I turn the PWR knob higher then though it indicates from 11 to 100, the output, as seen on the Elecraft W2, is circa 0 to 1 watt. Until I go to CW, as I said, then the output is correct, the K3 dial shows the correct number of bars and so forth. All other bands work fine on Tx-Data mode. The antenna is not the problem. I figure there is a setting somewhere I have messed up. However, this must be an elusive setting. -- Bob KD7YZ AMSAT LM 0901 http://www.qrz.com/db/KD7YZ www.denstarfarm.us/LGD __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K2 knob replacement
Well for the K3 either. I thought the price for the pair was totally nuts! That was up until I got to use one. Ordered a few days later with no regrets since either. Had the original all black ones. When the variety with the insert became available I replaced the all black with them. That was a pure eye candy decision. It it just reminded me of the Collins I wanted and the Heath SB's I had. . The K2 has a knob from an old Ampex tape machine Would I want a heavy knob to carry to a SOTA site, no. But I don't do that so maybe. Well, most likely I would/will, just a matter of time and when I have cash burning a hole in my pocket. Re: [Elecraft] K3: reduced PWR in Data Mode on 10m only
Hi Bob, Turning the power knob and reading the power in the lower display is not really an indication that the K3 is putting out that same amount of power. You would need to set the K3 meter to display power output. (Hold the DISP button until the RF bar appears below the S units). I suspect the meter will agree with the W2 and that you are not putting out any power. Is it possible that your digital software is not activating the VOX or PTT. If VOX is the issue it might be a simple matter of increasing the VOX GN menu setting. 73, Mike K2MK Bob KD7YZ wrote If I use CW then I get whatever the rig will put out, on 10m. Re: [Elecraft] K2 knob replacement
I do not know the serial number, but it was above 7000 for certain. If you built your K2, you should know because you would have had to assemble the encoder board. If you did not build it, take the top cover off and peer between the front panel and the control board (maybe shine a light there to be able to see). If you see the back end of the encoder with a board mounted on it, you have the new one. The old one did not have a board mounted on it. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/17/2014 5:28 PM, Hisashi T Fujinaka wrote: Don, do you know about what the serial number was when the encoder changed? Thanks. Re: [Elecraft] K3: reduced PWR in Data Mode on 10m only
Except that 10 meters was mentioned my first check would be that the audio level is set wrong for digital modes. For Elecraft radios, audio level should light up 4 bars on the ALC Meter with the fifth bar flashing. This will provide a proper audio drive to properly modulate the transmitter and provide a clean signal. Set output power with the PWR control. Re: [Elecraft] K3 First Impressions
Hi David! Congrats on the K3! I'm no expert, having just built mine few weeks ago, but where did you connect your Sub RX antenna input to? IS it connected to the RX ANT bnc or to the KAT3? If BNC - then yes, you would need to connect the actual receive only antenna. I connected mine to the KAT3, so that i could pick and choose which antenna to use for the Sub RX. Right now it shares the same antenna as used by the main receiver. I'm sure others will chime in... Enjoy the rig! Slava B W2RMS On Apr 17, 2014, at 10:28 AM, David Cole d...@nk7z.net wrote: Hi all, I thought I might communicate my initial feelings/impressions regarding the K3 vs. Re: [Elecraft] K3: reduced PWR in Data Mode on 10m only
Seems like it could be band-specific if an RF problem -- maybe RF getting into the cables from the rig to the audio source or some such. That would not affect CW. 73, Phil w7ox On 4/17/14, 7:41 PM, Bob KD7YZ wrote: On 4/17/2014 18:08, Nr4c wrote: Except that 10 meters was mentioned my first check would be that the audio level is set wrong for digital modes. thanks for the input. Re: [Elecraft] K3: reduced PWR in Data Mode on 10m only
Bob, Does the same thing happen if you operate into a dummy load? If all is OK into a dummy load, then the K3 is OK, but you have RF-in-the-shack issues to resolve - add current mode chokes to your antenna feedlines. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/17/2014 10:41 PM, Bob KD7YZ wrote: On 4/17/2014 18:08, Nr4c wrote: Except that 10 meters was mentioned my first check would be that the audio level is set wrong for digital modes. thanks for the input. [Elecraft] Just built my new P3
Well, i guess i'm one step closer to completing my K-Line... Just built my new P3 that i received today (SN 3157). Very nice! Its no LP-Pan/NaP3, i tell you that, but it doesn't require a computer, so that's the major advantage. I've gotten pretty used to using the NaP3 on my Mac, click/drag and such. I guess i'll get used to the P3 just the same. Gonna start saving my pennies for the amp now... Hopefully by Dayton i'll be good to go. So much more stuff that i wanna get from Elecraft (W2, XG3). Slava B W2RMS I'm in the same boat as you. Put my P3/SVGA together a few weeks ago. I'm really pleased with it. Sure its not NaP3 (which I had before), but not relying on my shack PC (that goes into cooling-fan overdrive) is well worth the money. Plus the entire P3 is entirely hooked into my K3 (monitor excluded of course). You'll get used to using the markers to QSY and soon it'll be easier than using the mouse. Helpful tip: Set FN1-FN4 to various spans (I have mine set to 25, 50, 100, 200). I initially thought it wouldn't be worth the money, now i'm wondering why I didnt buy one a long time ago. Re: [Elecraft] Just built my new P3
They are just test LEDs for troubleshooting. If both are blinking, that's normal. If only one is blinking, there likely is a problem with the graphics controller. If neither is blinking the CPU is dead. Alan N1AL On 04/17/2014 09:38 PM, Slava Baytalskiy wrote: Hey guys! What are these red LEDs that are flashing inside my new P3?
