Re: [Elecraft] Flying with K2
My K2 has the internal lead acid battery option, however to avoid any possible issues I take the battery out and leave it at home... This also lessens the weight considerably. I have travelled to Spain and Portugal from East Midlands and Doncaster Sheffield (Finningley) airports to Alicante and Faro without a single query or issue with both a K1 and a K2. The K1 is powered from a 10 cell external battery pack housed in a plastic project box with internal self resetting fuse, the K2 from a switched mode PSU. The last trip was April this year from Finningley to Alicante on Ryanair. The airlines are not the issue, the security screening people at the airports are the issue. Take the radio in your hand luggage together with your licence. (longer reply sent off the forum) 73 Dave, G4AON Advice please - I'm flying within Europe shortly with a K2. Do I pack it in suitcase (hold) or carry-on? Any problem with the SLA battery? What about paperwork? Is it likely to cause concern at the airports? Re: [Elecraft] Suggestions for 10 MHz Signal Source for the K3?
Like I guess quite a few others, I have been down the high stability reference route and currently have the following 10 MHz sources: 60 KHz (MSF and possibly WWV) locked plain crystal oscillator, it's based on the G4JNT MK2 from RadCom (http://www.g4jnt.com/freqlock.htm). It works well enough and is easy and cheap to build/align. The limitation is the short term stability which is perhaps academic when used to lock a HF transceiver and is around 1 part in 10^8 (same stability as the older UK Quartzlock 198 KHz units), also I am not sure how immune it would be in the presence of high levels of HF RF. Locks and stable within 5 minutes or so from switch on, low current consumption. Surplus rubidium... These appear from time to time, I was given one by a local surplus dealer who seemed to have more than there was a market for a few years ago. They are used in cellular and similar sites and are probably good for quite a few hours of service, however they have a finite life and appear on the surplus market when removed for upgrade or on routine service, so don't pay much for one. Current drain is quite high, typically needing 2 Amps at 24 Volts initially then dropping after warm up. Stable around 15 ~ 20 minutes from switch on. Needs additional power supply and cabinet/heatsink. GPS controlled crystal oven... Mine appeared on eBay as a part home built unit, there are a variety of these that pop up at times. Mine uses a Toyo high stability OCXO and is superbly stable and will site in perfect sync with the rubidium for days. Locked and stable around 15 ~ 30 minutes from switch on, needs well sited external antenna (not one sitting in the shack window). Current consumption around half that of a rubidium when fitted with an OCXO. The best option of all for a long term accurate reference. If you want an OCXO there are currently several double ovens listed on eBay.com for $45 including worldwide shipping from China. They need a GPS or MSF/WWV locked oscillator to set accurately on frequency, warm up time 15 ~ 30 minutes. High stability oscillators/sources can be compared for phase/frequency with a dual beam oscilloscope, listening for a beat note between them is not sufficient at this level of accuracy. I don't plan to fit a K3EXREF, it seems like a nice idea but my K3 was only 2 Hz off frequency at 50 MHz a few days ago and it hasn't been adjusted for several months. My K3 has the KTCXO3-1 fitted and dates from 2007, so the TCXO is fairly well aged by now. 73 Dave, G4AON --- /I am considering a K3EXREF just for fun, no other reason. Re: [Elecraft] Backpacking a K1?
I agree withMike, KK5F, and his comment about using 10 x AA cells external to the K1 (his April 2011 post). I have used that arrangement several times on overseas trips without issue. Under these circumstances there are a few advantages to the external AA cell approach: 1. Using 10 x AA NiMh cells gives a nominal 12 Volts supply for a good steady 5 Watts capability. 2. The internal battery option might look better, but if you want rechargeable NiMh cells the Voltage is lower with 8 cells and you cannot run as much power. In addition, freshly charged cells are warm and may cause additional drift if used straight from charge. 3. While it's not easy to charge 10 cells, for casual operation a couple of 2/4 way AA rapid chargers will suffice and take up little space in luggage. 4. Lead acid batteries are heavy for air travel and despite being sealed, the wording acid can cause problems with airlines and airport security. While my operating isn't backpacking as such, the need to keep weight down is important. I tend towards using vertical antennas on fishing poles rather than end fed or random length inverted L antennas for increased efficiency... The need to take a length of coax is an issue as it's heavier that the wire needed for an end fed. If you use a K1 with the 80/40 band module, the ATU might struggle to match some low band antennas... See my article on increasing the tuning range: http://www.astromag.co.uk/pdfs/g4aon_kat1_mods.pdf In addition, I use a Palm mini paddle and the wide range tilt stand to run the radio on a table, which makes for very comfortable use. 73 Dave, G4AON K1 #1154, __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 vs. other amps
Can I add another dimension? I have an Acom 1000 which is fitted with the additional rear panel fan for fairly quiet 1 KW continuous carrier capability, it's a good amplifier for the shack and covers 160 - 6m with a measured 1 KW into a dummy load. For an output of 400 Watts the Acom needs around 20 ~ 40 Watts drive and comfortably works well from a K3. The UK power limit is currently 400 Watts and I feel the reduced weight of the KPA500 more than compensates for the difference in power and the cost is similar, even allowing for expensive shipping of a kit from the USA, etc. I am looking to get a KPA500 once the ordering to delivery time closes a little. I prefer to sell the Acom first and don't want to be without an amplifier for too long... My K2 has 0.1uV sensitivity for 10 dB signal to noise on 10m with pre-amp on, or 0.16uV with pre-amp off. The K2 has quite low gain compared to many radios and often needs the pre-amp switched in for the higher bands, also have you checked the alignment? Re: [Elecraft] K3 general coverage RX with KBPF3
My K3 has around 10 dB worse image rejection when operating outside the ham bands with a KBPF3. Sensitivity is mostly OK except when using the main (TX) antenna socket were the sensitivity drops off below 1 MHz and is about 20 dB less sensitive on 500 KHz. If you use the KXV3 transverter interface the sensitivity isn't reduced. I also have a Perseus, which is really good but of course requires a computer. If you are seriously into broadcast band listening the Perseus offers the neat trick of allowing you to record 1600 KHz chunks of frequency to replay later, which means you can record the whole of long and medium wave overnight and listen the following day. 73 Dave, G4AON -- how is the sensivity with KBPF3 for RX outside of HAM bands? Re: [Elecraft] K3 S meter vs P3 S scale
On a steady carrier (i.e. from a signal generator), both the P3 and K3 should read the same. My P3 reads much lower on actual signals than the K3, it is especially noticeable on SSB signals. Calibrating on a signal generator doesn't alter the lower reading of a P3 display on SSB signals. The peak reading facility of the P3 goes some way to overcome the lower reading but has an infinite decay... if it had an adjustable decay (or better still the normal display had a peak/decay setting) then the display would be far more useful. 73 Dave, G4AON Seems to be quite a difference in the readings between the P3 showing S scale and he S meter reading on the K3 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I run an Acom 1000 portable from a Yamaha EF2800i generator. The generator does cough a little on CW but the voltage remains steady. I have raised this issue with Alan (N1AL), on SSB signals below about S9 they average out to little more than a few dB above the noise floor yet look quite good with the peak enabled. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Performance on 6M?
Jeff, you will probably need a pre-amp with the K3. My experience of 6m over the past 3 or 4 years with a 4 ele quad is that many signals are very weak and the K3 lacks the sensitivity to deal with them unless you either add a pre-amp or have a high level of local noise masking those signals. My K3, serial 80, gives 10 dB SINAD at -126 dBm in a 400 Hz bandwidth using the internal pre-amp. Adding an external Advanced Receiver Research P50VDG pre-amp via the KXV3 RX ANT IN/OUT sockets improved the sensitivity by 10 dBm which is a huge improvement for weak signal work. The Elecraft pre-amp is a similar specification and should give similar results. For those who compare figures using MDS the with and without figures in a 400 Hz bandwidth are -136 dBm and -146 dBm. Image rejection is marginal at 62 dB. Power output on 6m is fine and the worse case harmonic is -60 dB. 73 Dave, G4AON - Hi everyone, Sorry to trouble you all again but I'd like to find out more on the K3's 6M performance as very little seems to be mentioned on the Elecraft website. Re: [Elecraft] Grounding Mat Chatter
A proper grounding mat costs a fraction of the price of a transceiver, so why not use a proper mat and avoid the risk? Perhaps Elecraft should sell anti-static mats and wrist bands. There have also been complaints that the DSP board upgrade included the risk of static damaged boards being re-used and shipped to unsuspecting K3 owners. As has been said on here countless times, static damage doesn't necessarily show up straight away. 73 Dave, G4AON - For a grounding mat I simply used the anti-static bag the RF board was packaged in. I clipped my wrist strap to it until the radio grew to be a chassis. At that time I clipped the wrist strap to the chassis but kept the mat in place. All sub-assembly components were unwrapped on the mat. Hence everything was the same potential. The result: I didn't spend money on a mat I would only occasionally use and #3995 is performing flawlessly. Re: [Elecraft] K3 unstable ssb power
Juha this problem is an old one. Some time back the K3 had poor ALC which allowed for overshoot on peaks, the firmware was altered to soften the ALC control with the results you (and the rest of us) experience. The power can slowly increase over the first few seconds on SSB, the effect is less if you TUNE first via the front panel button. Also, have you checked that you are driving the ALC meter reasonably well, as per the manual? For comparison, my TS-480SAT is also quite soft on ALC control with the peak power seeming to vary from one moment to the next. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Internal keyer in TS-480
I have a K1, K2, K3 and TS-480SAT. I always use the internal keyers in them and find no issues with the way they key, Elecraft and Kenwood internal keyers seem very similar to me. I use Iambic B with a weight of 1 (from the K3 menu in front of me). The only radios that I've had an issue with were the FT-857D which lacks a decent internal keyer and a TS-570 which had a keyer timing issue - Kenwood knew about the 570 keying issue for some time prior to mine being manufactured but still produced defective radios needing a return to the importer to have it updated... I use a Palm Mini paddle for portable operating and used their Code Cube keyer with the FT-857D, however the Code Cube is not used, or needed, with my current Elecraft or TS-480 radios. 73 Dave, G4AON SNIP Is this just a matter of different operators having different keyer preferences, or is there something unusual about the Kenwood internal keyer? Re: [Elecraft] Considering K3
I haven't used an IC7600, but have used a Pro III. At one time I did consider ditching my K3 due to firmware issues which have since been resolved, the radio I considered as an alternative was ironically the IC7600. Areas where the K3 is better: Close in RX dynamic range, perhaps not an issue for SSB. Low noise (wide band hash) on transmit (see the TX close in spectrum on the ARRL reviews of both), this makes the K3 a favourite for multi-operator sites such as DXpeditions and multi contest sites. Elecraft support is one of the best in the industry. Areas where the IC7600 is better: Front panel ergonomics, the K3 is fine when driven from a logging program in a CW contest but for general purpose use it's not too good compared to the larger transceivers from Kenwood, Icom and Yaesu. If you really must have a built-in panoramic display then it's no contest, but the Icom pan display isn't as good as you can have with an external SDR receiver. Both radios are mediocre with regard to SSB TX IMD, it's a common problem with 12 Volt PA transceivers. Not a lot you can do about it if you need a 12 Volt capable radio, although they do improve by about 10 dB when running around 1/4 power and used to drive a valve linear at that level soapbox /off I guess you will have seen Rob Sherwoods receiver table, if not it's at: http://www.sherweng.com/table.html Happy shopping! 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 serial 80 http://www.astromag.co.uk/k3/ --- HI all , I am considering to buy a new radio and I am between the K3 and the IC 7600, I have read very good things about K3, although I don't know anybody near me that have one, so I would like to hear comments in why to go for the K3 and if someone live near Ogden UT that would like to shoe me their K3 would be awesome. Re: [Elecraft] Need help making K3 purchase decisions
Welcome to the Reflector Jeff! The K3 will work with almost any microphone or headset, you will benefit from trying a few cheap ones before splashing out. Depending on your voice you will probably find the ordinary computer headsets work great. Hook up another receiver to your computer and transmit into a 50 Ohm load with your K3 and make a few test recordings and hear the results for yourself. My favourite headset is a cheap Labtec Axis 302 with the electret insert replaced by a Heil HC5 insert, which in turn is covered by a sponge windshield. However, it's only marginally better than the original electret insert with my voice. I wired it to fit the front panel 8 pin socket for convenience. For a fist microphone, the Kenwood MC-43S is low cost and works without modification (and sounds good too). Computer integration and rig control is built into the K3, it doesn't need any additional interface. Programs such as Ham Radio Deluxe will directly control a K3 via the serial lead doing the transmit/receive control via a serial command. The line in/out of the K3 connects directly to a computer sound card line in/out, a pair of stereo 3.5mm leads from an electronics store are all you need (the line in is mono, but a stereo cable works just fine). You can route the receive signal via a KXV3 to an external receiver with a home made ferrite splitter, if you are going to use just a pan adapter, such as LP-Pan, it's not really necessary to use the transverter interface to have the IF presented on the rear panel, a single hole BNC socket will fit the blanking panel and just needs a single coax to the underside of the main RF board (the KXV3 has a direct connection between the IF out socket and the main RF board). I have the general coverage board and a 6 KHz filter, I hardly use either so they were a bit of a waste of money for me. The image rejection of the K3 receiver is up to 10 dB worse when operating outside the ham bands (when using the general coverage board), which may or may not be an issue for yourself. Happy shopping! 73 Dave, G4AON http://www.astromag.co.uk/k3/ - This is my first submission to the Elecraft reflector. Re: [Elecraft] kit building or buy ready for use
The K3 kit needs an anti-static wrist strap and mat, they need not be expensive and will be useful for other tasks. You also need a small selection of basic hand tools (screwdrivers, pliers, etc), a low cost digital multi-meter to check for shorts and a 50 Ohm load rated to cope with the maximum output of your particular K3 kit. Nothing out of the ordinary for a typical ham shack. The only soldering required is to fit the Anderson Power Pole connectors on the power lead. Alignment is semi automatic with the K3 utility program. Assembly/testing time around 4 ~ 5 hours depending on options. I have worked in electronics all my working life, but other builders are not in the trade and find assembly straightforward. [Elecraft] K3 other CQWW contest issues
It came as a surprise when a 40m pile up in the recent contest resulted in distorted audio on my K3, this only occurred when I was in the thick of it, multiple S9+ signals in the passband, with a 250 Hz filter and DSP bandwidth around 100 Hz. This happened on 3 or 4 occasions, no NR, no NB. A query to Wayne and Lyle resulted in a reminder to use SOFT AGC which isn't the default setting. It wasn't a big issue and another K3 owner noted the same with his K3, so perhaps the default needs changing to SOFT? Not only is the K3 quite good with regard to key clicks, the synthesizer noise level is much less than most of the competition, look at the ARRL reviews for the Spectral display of the K3/100 transmitter during keying sideband testing or the equivalent for the other transceivers. When you are 2 miles from a non K3 using running 1.5 KW on 80m CW, the resultant bandwidth of that transmitter can reach +/- 50 KHz, if it was 10 or more dB lower life would be much more pleasant. Re: [Elecraft] K3 SWR Accuracy - reprise
Wayne (and Jack) I and at least one other user, have noted the K3 with ATU sometimes appears to leave a residual C or L in circuit on 10m when in bypass giving lower than expected power into a 50 Ohm load and may give incorrect TX power calibration as a result. Using the ATU to give a good SWR fixed the problem. The residual issue isn't always there, the typical false SWR is 1.5:1 or 1.6:1. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 -- We'll post additional details soon. Meanwhile, no one need worry about this apparent discrepancy. The ATU is cancelling its own strays, and the SWR bridge is correctly reporting the load presented to the transceiver internally, which is the important thing when matching the rig to its load. 73, Wayne __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft TX audio adjustment
I use my Perseus SDR to record the whole band while transmitting with my K3 into a 50 Ohm load. For those not familiar with the Perseus, it can record up to 1600 KHz of frequency to hard disk for later playback as if you were listening to a live transmission. I save the file with an appropriate file name and then play it back in comparison with other recordings using different settings and/or microphones. The Perseus is of course not limited by a crystal filter, so the recording can be any bandwidth and I can also listen on the other sideband. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 == IMO, it's difficult to properly set up the TX audio ... especially the equalizer ... by listening to yourself. Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW Reception
Another couple of points Steve: Take a look at the recent ARRL reviews of transceivers, the Spectral display of keying graph shows the K3 to be 10 dB or more cleaner on CW transmit than most other transceivers. This is synthesiser and general noise as well as key click sidebands. These spurious outputs are mostly not mentioned but are a real problem if you have a ham within a couple of miles who runs more than a few Watts and are one of the reasons multi-radio stations look to the K3 as it's cleaner transmitter can allow CW and SSB stations to operate on the same band. I can hear a local station 50 KHz either side of his CW transmission, he's about 2 miles away. Two tone 3rd order IMD figures for 12 Volt transceivers are mediocre and contribute to wide transmissions on SSB. The K3 is no better in this regard than other brands. The IMD figures on the K3 improve by around 10 dB when running at quarter power, useful if you have a linear that gives a decent output with a 25 Watt input. With the K3 receiver you have one of the best receivers around, but unfortunately the transmitters in your area can often be the problem. Make sure your menu item AGC PLS is set to nor otherwise pulses from light switches and similar transients can cause the K3's AGC to punch holes in the received signal. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 8 pole filter offsets
Since obtaining an 8 pole 250 Hz filter to compliment my 8 pole 400 Hz filter, I have been puzzled as to why the 400 Hz filter appeared to have more loss than the 250 Hz one (it should be the other way around). Talking with another K3 owner brought the possibility that the 400 Hz filter might need an offset, so I fed my signal generator into the K3 and checked. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Beta Firmware
Even a public beta release has undergone a significant amount of real life field testing by around 80 testers and it's easy to revert back to an earlier version if you find a problem. The more recent releases have significant improvements in many areas, especially the noise reduction. There is no reason to wait for a release to be a regular one, updating is simple and safe. I've even had my laptop go into hibernation half way through a firmware update without needing the radio to be returned to the factory. Unlike some other radios, the K3 is very robust with regard to firmware updates. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 f/w 3.44 -- I see it is being recommended for K3 owners to upgrade to the latest beta firmware. I have always waited for the regular releases. There has been a plethora of changes since the last regular release in early May. It would be nice if all the stable items in these betas were incorporated into a regular release so those of us not interested in being beta testers could catch up to some degree. 73, Lee (K9CM) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Beta Firmware
I download the zip file from the Elecraft web site using the web browser Firefox and save it in a beta folder. I have pretty much all the beta firmware there in the original zip format. Then I remove the 8 or so files from the zipped one with Winzip (I know Windows will now extract those files but I have a paid for Winzip and it works better) and extract the contents of the latest zip file to that same folder. My K3 Utility points to that folder and sees the latest available firmware. The process is relatively straightforward and means I have currently 50 versions of earlier firmware I can refer back to with out difficulty. Yes, it's a bit computery but it works 100% for me with Windows XP Pro and I checked with another K3 owner who has Vista and he says it works fine on zipped betas for him too (although he also has Winzip). Not having Winzip shouldn't be a problem... 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 [Rich KE0X Wrote] My problem with the BETA process is that it is in no way intuitively obvious as to how to install it. I have put this on the reflector before and got pu-pawed, I have Windows Vista. It is Pain in the A… to install the new betas. You CAN NOT click and download the file. PERIOD. You MUST follow a specific procedure just to even see the zip file (because for some unknown reason it is in a FTP folder. That means you have to openthe folder in a separate window/tab, etc. etc. etc. and do it CORECTLY. Why can’t the beta file be placed as an icon/link? Why can’t the K3Utility have a special tab for BETA releases? And there are many other ways this process could be improved. Re: [Elecraft] VOX behaviour changed with new firmware?
In more recent firmware there is an option to default the VOX on CW to OFF. This avoids those embarrassing moments when you turn the rig on and lean across the bench pressing the paddles and transmit by accident. Unfortunately, the same is not true if you enable CW in SSB... Even if VOX is OFF the paddles will let you transmit CW when on SSB. Check through the firmware release notes for these items. Re: [Elecraft] K3 S-Meter and Noise
I have a feeling something may have changed in later K3 firmware, possibly as a result of calibrating the receiver gain via the K3 Utility. Previously I have been able to calibrate the S-Meter from around S6 to S9 +60 and have it almost perfect, now it doesn't seem to be possible to get it that good. Anyway, these are actual measured results from my K3, which is using the latest pre-release beta firmware (v3.41). These measurements seem OK to me and the K3 doesn't seem any noisier than other radios on my 80m dipole. The S-Meter has been calibrated without the pre-amp in use. It is quite hard to set it correctly all the way from S1 to S9 +60... AGC set to default values. SMTR OFF = 027, SMTR SC = 010, SMTR PK = OFF and SMTR MD = ABS (the latter makes no difference to the S-Meter readings below). S1 is solid at -115 dBm, S2 is solid at -109 dBm and S3 is solid at -105 dBm. These are using CW with the pre-amp off on 80m, 2800 Hz filter. There is about 1 S-point drop using either the 400 Hz or 250 Hz filter. MDS (3 dB SINAD) is -135 dBm in a 400 Hz bandwidth with the 2800 Hz filter, pre-amp off. An input of -126 dBm gives 10 dB SINAD for the same settings. SINAD is signal to noise and distortion. The K3 is sensitive enough on the lower bands to not need the pre-amp, which of course would give rise to higher noise levels. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 bad TX
I've just run my K3 at 70 Watts into a 50 Ohm load, 14.020 MHz. Results were spurs at +/- 11.9 KHz which are between 103 and 106 dB down. The noise at 7 KHz out from the carrier is 106 dB down, even at 50 WPM keying (internal keyer). There was a spur 263 KHz up which was 98 dB down. On 21 MHz there is a fixed spur on transmit at 21.028 MHz, it's still 94 dB down, no sign of the +/- 11.9 KHz spurs. Tuning the K3 across the band while transmitting and watching the signal (both 20m and 15m) didn't produce any odd spurious signals, except those noted above. Re: [Elecraft] K3 filter ringing at 50Hz
I'm running a pre-release beta (f/w ver 3.41). Hardware is an 8 pole 250 Hz filter and no NR. I am using a centre frequency/pitch of 700 Hz. On 80m this evening (8pm local) there is little difference between 50 Hz and wider settings of the DSP bandwidth on both weak and strong signals, the band is fairly quiet. I don't often go that narrow as few can net within 300 Hz let alone 50 Hz, so have little experience of using that bandwidth, but it sounds fine here on my K3. Re: [Elecraft] K# and data modes
Mike the K3 does not need any extra interface to operate sound card modes with a PC. A couple of ordinary 3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo cables (to/from a sound card) and a standard serial cable between your PC and the K3 works perfectly. No special settings, no need for VOX, separate line in/out levels to leave your mic levels alone, EQ bypassed on data, you name it the K3 does it. The Ham Radio Deluxe software will key the K3 via serial command and it's freeware. Re: [Elecraft] An interested link
Fortunately the K3 is quite good on AM transmit, unlike legacy equipment often used. I don't know about elsewhere, but here in the UK there are 80m AM nets where some of the stations run original AM gear without any additional audio filtering, one was measured at +/- 12 KHz by a fellow ham with an SDR receiver. The operator seemed indifferent to the fact his transmission was excessively wide and carried on regardless. The guy who measured the wide signal used home built AM gear himself, but had a multi-pole active filter of a similar specification to that used by broadcast stations to achieve their skyscraper envelopes as seen on a panoramic adapter or SDR receiver. Re: [Elecraft] K3: IF output buffer gain modification
I find removing surface mount resistors, at least on the underside of the K3 main board, quite simple. It's easier than removing wire ended resistors from plated through holes! Remove the bulk of the solder from each end of the component with solder wick, the heat from the iron will often have migrated through the component by this time and it will slide away from the pads, if not dab the other end. I really do not like cutting surface mount resistors and capacitors with side cutters as a means of removing them. Getting the replacement component nice and square on the board is harder than removing the old one as the heat from soldering the second end can be enough to cause the component to shift slightly. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 with all the published mods. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Will I Lose the 120 Watt Max If I update TheSoftware?
Unfortunately the 3rd order IMD of a typical 12 Volt PA is barely acceptable when operating at 100 Watts let alone pushing 120 Watts from a K3. The K3 would output 120 Watts, or 110 Watts in later firmware, and yet is recommended by Elecraft to run 100 Watts max on SSB. Running a K3 at 25 Watts improves the IMD on SSB by around 10 dB. My Acom 1000 amplifier runs the UK limit of 400 Watts with less than 30 Watts drive. For amplifiers needing 120 Watts of drive you need a higher power transceiver than a K3, at least that way you stand a chance of having a clean signal on SSB. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 -- Most 3-500 based amplifiers with 2800 V (no load) on the plates require 120 Watts or so for legal limit output. That's about 11 dB gain. Part 97.317(a)(2) limits the maximum gain to 15 dB (approximately 50 W drive for 1500 W out). The extra 10 to 20 watts of drive makes a difference for those who have SB-220, TL-922, AL-82, AL-1300, AL-572, etc. amplifiers. It can mean another 200+ W output. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] K3 Feature Idea
If I interpret the geekSpeak correctly, this looks like rounding off the frequency whether the user wants it or not. Coarse tuning rounding off when using the main tuning control is not a problem, but when the RIT/XIT tuning control is configured for coarse tuning works just fine for me the way it is, it is very similar to the implementation from Kenwood on the TS570 and TS480. Rounding off the frequency when using the RIT/XIT for tuning is a pain, as an accidental move of that control means you can't return in a couple of clicks to your original frequency. The K3 interface already has awkward compromises (accidentally going up or down a band when turning VOX on, QSK on, not being able to spin through multiple memories while listening to each one across different bands, etc.) lets not make it harder to use. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 - Suppose the VFO were tuned to, say, 7040.23, in CW mode. Further assume your CONFIG:VFO CRS menu parameter is set to 1.0 kHz (i.e., your COARSE tuning step is set to 1.0 kHz in CW mode). If you then go into COARSE mode and move the VFO up one tic, you'll get 7041.23 with present firmware. In the future you'll get 7042.00: quantized to the nearest quantum which in this case is the next even multiple of 1.0 kHz. The same will apply if you have the RIT/XIT offset control enabled for use as VFO coarse tuning when it's not being used for RIT/XIT (see CONFIG:VFO OFS). The control will be quantized just like the VFO when it is in COARSE mode. The VFO already quantizes with smaller tuning increments selected (e.g. 50 Hz). So quantizing COARSE increments would be more consistent with present behavior. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Larry you will find this list is like the news media, when it's a light news day they come up with all manner of strange stuff. Folks who hang around here do so because they are passionate about Elecraft, their radios and their test equipment. When there's some big change or a new product, all of a sudden that becomes the focus of attention. Many on here have been using a K3 for up to 2 years, initially there was a lot of how to do this, or it doesn't seem to do this correctly, am I doing something wrong, but the rough edges have long since worn off the firmware and it's much better for it. I have a TS-480SAT, K1, K2 and K3. Guess what's running most of the time I am home? You guessed, the K3. [Elecraft] K3 firmware 2 years on and still much to do
Unfortunately the K3 firmware seems to have wandered off track a bit, two years ago when the K3 started rolling out the following were on the to do list and formed part of the specification: 0.5 ppm TCXO calibration Synchronous AM These might not be the most important issues in the world, but were included in the original specification and are in the Oct 24th 2007 B1 manual. Currently the K3 fails to meet specification! Can we have some indication of their position on the firmware roadmap? 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 FSK RTTY
Welcome to the K3 world Jim. I have used the one transistor interface from the MMTTY help files built into a D plug. It uses 1 x NPN transistor (any small signal one will do), 2 x resistors and 2 x diodes. I no longer use the MMTTY program but recall not needing a PTT connection, only the FSK one (from memory the PTT can be done via serial cable, the normal one used for used for programming and logging between the PC and the K3). I have a multi serial card in my PC so there is no shortage of proper serial connections. I no longer use MMTTY, but use Ham Radio Deluxe for sound card data modes and that program only needs the serial cable and 2 x 3.5mm stereo cables between sound card and K3 (the audio input on the K3 is mono but the stereo cables work just fine). Above all else, there is no need to rush out buying interfaces... 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 - I have a K3 on it's way form Aptos that will arrive Tuesday, Sept 8th.would have here today except for a minor hiccup. But, not complainingjust a lesson in patience. I've been worrying over the assembly and operating manual the last few days. I like to contest using FSK RTTY. Looks like the only way to get the FSK from the computer to the radio is through the Accessory port on the radio. Looks like there are several other functions that go through the connector. The manual seems a little shy on how to gather all the data from apparently several locations and get it into the connector. Is there a cable available to do that or is one left to their own to fabricate such a spiderweb thing. I applaud the built in interface isolation transformers only to find myself faced with having to engineer and build a break out cable that connects among several pieces of hardware. Do I have this thing all wrong or do I need to start contemplating building a breakout cable? Thanks for any help. Have a good day and 73. Re: [Elecraft] Mic and Headset
I am using a Labtec Axis-302 headset wired to the front 8 pin K3 socket and a 3.5mm/.25 adapter for the earpiece side. The mic audio from the supplied electret insert isn't quite as good for my voice as a Heil HC-5, so I replaced the electret with a HC-5 insert hot melt glued in place, plus a foam windsock over it. The result looks and sounds good. I find the HC-5 inserts in stick mics like the GM-5 a bit weak for my liking, the headset approach is better for me. Unfortunately the HC-5 insert as a replacement part seems hard to come by these days. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 - I'm curious as to what others are using for a mic and headset with the K3. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 VS 7600 Sherwood List
One area where the K3 is also looking good is the transmitted noise level, ARRL members may wish to look at the on-line reviews and check the close in spectrum analyser plots of the K3 vs the rest when keying on CW. A near neighbour appears to be +/- 50 KHz wide on 80m with rubbish from his transmitter, now if he was 15 dB cleaner by running a K3 instead of his top of the range rig (it's not Icom by the way) some of us would be a bit happier. Maybe that's why multi-rig contest stations are migrating to the K3? 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 -- Hello Gentleman, I fully understand that Sherwood list is of high regard among many hams. Regrettably, I really do not experience what should be expected after studying Sherwood list. In particular, I am referring ic7800, ic7700, ic7600 Vs K3. All these 3 icom rigs are now in my stack and ready to do A/B comparison with K3 at any time. I do not see any day and night difference among them even in the recent IARU contest. Bearing in mind, Hong Kong is small and 1Kw big guns are everywhere (even within line of sight) under contest condition. On the other hand, there are distinct characterists between K3 and Icom rigs. Personal preference and operation easiness would play in these areas. I am pleased to see that Elecraft keeps on improving the firmware which should bring more operation easiness and smoother learning curve. I would expect further improvement in the Noise Reduction function of K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and SignaLink USB Interface
The K3 doesn't need any interface... if you use the line in and line out on the rear panel the audio levels in and out are independent of the front panel AF control, and the mic level as used on SSB (assuming you use DATA A for data). The only possible advantage of the external interface is to use it as an outboard sound card which avoids issues with computer generated beeps from other programs, but these aren't necessarily a big deal. I use a pair of 3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo leads to/from my PC sound card and it works just fine with Ham Radio Deluxe and its DM780 program. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 Anyone using this combo with the ACC (15-pin) instead of the mic jack? DX Engineering, and well as TigerTronics, sell all kinds of pre-made cables but only a mic cable for the K3. I'd rather connect to the ACC, as I do with the IC-7800, where the audio signal is not dependent on the AF volume or mic gain settings. That's a neat idea, I used to have a Philips digital storage scope with a pale green auto set button that gave you a nice display of an pretty much any input without further button pushing... You could then adjust it further manually if necessary. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Channel Hopping
VFO/memory operation is done pretty well on the Kenwood TS480 and TS570, I don't know why if Elecraft can crib their serial comms protocol they can't also use their memory arrangement too... For those who haven't used one of these Kenwood radios, there is a V/M (VFO/memory) button... When in memory mode when you rotate the multi-knob the radio behaves as if it was crystal controlled and allows you to listen to each stored memory in turn without any messing around and no need to store a * in the memory name or press a further button to listen to the memory content. There is also a quick memory in button that stores to 5 memories which also can be accessed by rotating the multi-knob. On a K3 the RIT knob may serve as a multi-knob. I guess that without a new front panel we will still have a poor user interface as regards VFO and memory control. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Channel Hopping
So long as they remember to keep rapid tune via the RIT knob function set to not round off the frequency (VFO OFS menu item), this can lead to the accidentally loss of a contact on CW. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 -- Another thing it does and that I suggested for the K3 is this: With both RIT and XIT Off change the function to force the frequency to the nearest whole number value on the first step. For example if the current frequency is 14.201 MHz and the coarse tuning steps are 5 KHz, then the first step would be to either 14.200 or 14.205 (depending on direction) then the following steps would be to 14.210, 14.215... if tuning up or 14.195, 14.190...if tuning down. Re: [Elecraft] [K3]Advice needed from audio grounding experts
Hello Paul I took the pre-wired cable that came with my PTC-IIex and terminated the cable in a plastic project box, I connected all 4 of the braid of the screened leads to/from the K3 to the braid of the cable to the SCS modem. The white wire (pin 2 of the DIN plug) on the cable from the modem also connects to the braid at that common point. You might at some stage consider making a switch box to avoid needing to keep swapping those audio plugs when using sound card modes, a cheap 4 pole 3 way rotary switch works well, just needs a few sockets on the rear panel of a small box and you're in business. 8 turns on the stacked cores appear to give higher impedance on the low bands compared to typical chokes fitted to other transceiver power leads. Re: [Elecraft] Antennas for K1 Field Use
There are no advantages in using commercial antennas out portable. A fishing pole for support and a lightweight dipole, doublet, end fed wire or ground plane will work better than most other simple antennas and the cost is minimal. The K1 built-in ATU has a fairly limited tuning range and will only tune some doublets and end fed wires... especially on 80m/40m. I've had success across 40/30/20/15 metres with a 51 foot doublet and 32 foot of lightweight 300 Ohm ribbon fed via a balun on a couple of feet of coax. On 80/40 metres with a longer doublet, it can prove troublesome to tune with the standard ATU, however by adding a couple of capacitors the tuning range on the lower bands can be extended, see: http://www.astromag.co.uk/pdfs/g4aon_kat1_mods.pdf 73 Dave, G4AON __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Howard In the 18 months since my K3 arrived, there have been a few hardware mods... They are all relatively easy to implement, I can't say that any of the hardware mods have made a huge difference, not even the hardware AGC mod. The only one still in the pipeline (I think there's only one) appears to be the audio low pass filter board, so you will soon be able to order a K3 safe in the knowledge that it's pretty much there as regards hardware! BTW, I have an MFJ-1026 and they aren't much use against wideband hash which plagues the lower bands in summer. It's not the fault of the MFJ and similar units, it's the noise that doesn't radiate from a point source.
