[Elecraft] Dayton Hamvention / FDIM rooms

2009-04-15 Thread hank k8dd
There are still a few rooms available for the next 5 days at the
QRP Hotel - the Holiday Inn in Fairborn, Ohio for the Hamvention
and the FDIM (Four Days In May) festivities. These rooms include
a breakfast buffett and the QRP pricing. After that the rooms go
to the higher street price. (But check with me - there just may
be a few rooms available after April 20 in the QRP group!)

It appears that there may be bus service from the hotel to the
Hamvention on Friday and Saturday depending on response.

For rooms go to rooms.qrparci.org
For bus information email Ken Evans - w...@arrl.net

[Elecraft] QRP DX - Feb 19

2009-02-06 Thread hank k8dd
YN - Nicaragua Feb 17 - 24  Hank, K8DD (YN2DD); Stan, AC8W (YN2WW);
Lee, N8LJ (YN2LJ) and Jim, KB8TXZ (YN2TX) will be active on all
bands/modes. In the ARRL DX CW contest using the call YN2DD. Check
QRZ.COM for QSL information.

That said . As I have done for the past trips to the DX side, the
Thursday night (Feb 19 local time) before the contest I will be on 40
meters QRP about the time the Fox Hunt is over. Normally I try to
find a QRP frequency close to 7040 and call CQ QRP and stick around as
long as there are QRP callers.
The Fox Hunts run until 2230 Eastern Time, which is 0330Z.

And if possible, I will try to get on either 17 or 20 M on Monday.
18095 or 14060.
We should have internet access, so I will try to get an announcement
out close to Thur the 19th and then on Mon the 23rd.
The rig should be a K3 (a K2 for backup)
And the antennas are:
40 meter 2 el quad fixed on 30 deg
17 meter 2 el quad rotatable
20 meter A3 tribander rotatable

Please do not spot the Thursday night QRP schedule on the DX Clusters!!

I think the crux of this problem is one of learning to use QSK.

True, Brian . For some QSK is an acquired operating taste.

So can we get an option
  CONFIG:DUCKINGON/OFF

But then we'll want a special 'beep' sound an option, of course
  CONFIG:QUACKON/OFF

Fred
I have never had luck running either the K2 or K3 with AUTO baud rate. I'd
set the baud rate to 4800.
And I've seen on the Writelog reflector recommendations not to use AUTO
with most radios.
73HankK8DD

quote author=Fred Jensen
The RS-232 CAT for my K2 has always worked well. Getting ready for the
OK RTTY, I find that it keeps giving weird frequencies, none of which
are right. It seems to do it about once a second.

I'm running WriteLog, the rig is set to K2, and the baud rate to AUTO,
which has always worked. Anyone got any ideas? If I can get this
fixed, I think I'll just leave the K2 set on RTTY ... this happens every
time I try to get it working with the laptop again.

I have 2 USB adapters, both Prolific bridges, one from Elecraft and one
from RS. The RS one has worked in the past.

Open to any ideas.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW filtering

2008-11-25 Thread hank k8dd
- Original Message -
From: Gary Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED]

With that, what filter should I go with to maximise my CW experience?

Like John W2XS I went with the 500 200 Hz filters. In CQ WPX CW
I could slowly tune up 20M and work the European stations in between the
loud east coast stations - it was like they were not there. Very
impressive!

And no ringing.I have not cranked the width down to 50 Hz, but the times
that I did were pretty effective.

I had a 1.8 filter that I thought was going to be good for SSB and OK for
CW. I didn't like it on SSB and it was too wide on CW - stations 1 KHz
away would nail the AGC, so I traded it for a 1.0 filter.

So for CW I believe that the 1.0, 500, 200 is an excellent combination,
although I have not had the chance to use the 8 pole narrow CW filters if
one is to believe the numbers that W4ZV, W4TV, and others have come
up with comparing the 5 and 8 pole filters, it doesn't appear that there is
a

whole lot of difference between them. At least not to the average human
ear!

That's how I see it here in the woods in MI!

I like the sound of the RX audio of my K2 with the KAF2 filter better than
my
K3. It has less hiss and just sounds better - at least to my crummy
ears..
I have played around some with the RX equalizer in the K3 and have
improved

it some but has anyone had time to really find out what settings will best
mirror the K2 with the KAF2?

Thanks and 73,

Bill NZ0T

Bill

I tend to agree - the K2 with the K2DSP does sound better on CW with the
DSP / NR turned on than the K3 with NR turned on. At least to my old ears.

On the K3, with NR off AGC SLP = 12 AGC THR = 5, it sounds pretty
close to my K2 with no DSP / NR. ( My CONFIG MENU settings are
on http://k8dd.com/k3/K3_Settings11-03-08.xls ).

I have recorded both with Audacity. Without DSP both the K2 and K3 have
great sounding audio. When you turn on the K2 DSP the signal may sound
a bit hollow, but the waveform of the CW is not destroyed.

With the K3's NR turned on with any of the levels set the leading edge of
the

CW signal starts to flatten out or go soft and destroy the CW waveform - the
leading edge goes anywhere from looking like a .45 bullet to a 30-06!

It does, however bring the signal up out of the noise, but at higher speeds
it

makes it hard to copy.

I recorded a CW contest in the spring and sent sound clips to some friends
and some QRP ops that I worked - one comment was I've got to check my
rig - that keying sounds really soft. It wasn't their keying - with the NR
off

they sounded fine.

The end result is -- I don't use NR or RX EQ. As has been stated, RX EQ
on CW causes very low audio when the bandwidth is 200 Hz or below.

I have not tried the MCU and DSP that came with the K3, but I do not
remember that NR altered the received CW waveform like it does now.

And I have no idea what NR does to signals on SSB That's my story and
I'm sticking to it

Once I started a thread on eham on Mark V Field having high AF distortion;
the second harmonic of a 400Hz carrier was only about 30 db below. After
many exchanges it turned out that I was overdriving the sound card; after
reducing the input the second harmonic was about 45 db below, not bad.

45 db is what they are finding. Not bad.

I gave my K3 another RTTY run out for the WAE contest this weekend. Filter
set-up exactly the same as CQWW RTTY using the High/low cut-off to about 200Hz
made for simple copy of even the weakest US low power stations. The rig once
again performed flawlessly and with the newly acquired small beam (TGM) I was
able to 'null' out most of the EU wall. In fact, I set the bandwidth to 600Hz
and could still work reasonably comfortably - the beam helping here. CQWW CW to
look forward to at the end of this month. It will be interesting to compare my
score against the FT2000 in 2007.

As an aside, I noticed today that the rear panel plate holding the mic
in/line in/out sockets is loose. Removing the top cover reveals that getting to
the panel is not so straightforward. Is there a sequenced procedure for this
minor bit of maintenance?

Finally, I ordered the KRX + filters on 10 Sep 08. When can I expect it?

Cheers,

Terry

I love the ability to toggle RIT during transmit.

I agree, although I have RIT on most of the time anyway. What I really
appreciate is being able to adjust the RIT during transmit. When someone
answers a CQ, I am busy typing in their call sign and not able to
simultaneously adjust RIT. So, while my response transmission is going
out

to them I can adjust the RIT. I've already heard their signal and can
blindly adjust the RIT for optimum copy when they come back with their
exchange. Then, my TU message (or subsequent CQ message) clears the RIT
to

be ready for the next caller.

73,
Ed - W0YK

It would be good to be able to adjust WIDTH during transmit, too. Like Ed,
when

someone answers a CQ, I am busy typing in their call sign and not able to
simultaneously adjust the WIDTH because someone just opened up close to the
frequency.
And it is nice to have the RIT on VFO B when the DISP button is toggled, it
would
also be nice to have the WIDTH available for display there too. There are a
lot of

times that I wonder where the WIDTH is set.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 I / II Switch

2008-08-18 Thread hank k8dd

I have mine set up fairly spartan, I think.
I is 700 Hz on CW, 2.7 KHz on SSB and 1.0 KHz on Data
II is 400 Hz, 2.6 KHz, and 1.0 Khz on the same settings.
I guess going between the two is a lot easier or quicker than turning the
Bandwidth knob.

They used to get a lot of use (actually #I did) when I would be chasing DX
spots, or typing frequencies, from the logging program because when I'd
change band and/or mode several times the K3 would forget what the filter
setting was supposed to be for the mode.

I would rather have them both the same for the DSP filters and have them
store the power level - 100 watts for barefoot and 70 watts for driving the
amp.Although I could leave the K3 set at 70 watts all the time - if I
can't work them at 70 watts I very seriously doubt that I'm going to work
them at 100 watts!

Now I have the logging program telling the K3 what to set the DSP filter to
for the given mode from the logging program band plan, so I don't know if
the band/mode default was ever fixed!

Using N1MM in the NA QSO Party, for 424 QSOs, I used 500 Mb.
A 25 second QSO took 1,101 KB Audio Format PCM 11.025, 16 Bit, Stereo.

With Writelog one hour (3582.78 seconds) is 6,998 KB Audio format MPEG
Layer-3 16 kBits/s, 11,025 Hz, Mono.

Quite possibly I could have cut down the audio format to something like PCM
8 kHz, 8 Bit, Mono 7 kb/sec. That would have saved about 4,000 KB. But
the 8 kHz quality was a fair amount less quality than the 11025 Hz in WPX
SSB using an IC-746 with fixed line output.

So I guess it depends on which program you are using to record, how much
quality you want and how big your hard drive is!

Is there an optimum setting for digital recording (bit rate?) that will

This would be brilliant for training.

Even better to record a segment of the band that can be replayed using LP
PAN etc. What memory capacity would be needed for that and is it
practical to do?

Thanks guys...I have Audacity, and that's what I was thinking of using
unless someone had a better idea.

I'm still wondering if there's a way to get the monitor audio out the
line-out output from the rear. It would be there out the headphone
jack but as K8DD pointed out, that is going to be controlled by the AF
Gain, which isn't optimal.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and recording SSB

2008-08-15 Thread hank k8dd
When you record both XMT and RCV audio the level is controlled by the AF
Gain control on the K3 rather than a fixed level output. To keep from
distorting on the laptop you have to keep from turning the AF Gain up too
high, which can cause distortion on the laptop. This can make it difficult
to copy weak stations on the air.

I have used Writelog and N1MM to test this. But if the laptop is
independent of the logging PC you could use Audacity - a free audio program.

Hey Folks,

I'm planning a serious effort for CQWW SSB in October and would like
to record the entire contest digitally to my laptop (not the logging
computer, a different one). I'd like to also include in the recording
the monitor audio on XMIT, is this possible?

If anyone has had any great success with any particular computer
recording software, I'd love to hear about that, too. My plan is to
just run the LINE-OUT from the K3 to my MIC-IN on my laptop, and
adjust MIC levels until I have something that doesn't distort. Any

Thanks!

[Elecraft] Need a little SMD help!

2008-08-14 Thread hank k8dd
I need a little help with replacing the two SMD diodes in the VSWR circuit.

K3 support has determined, after 4 days of emails, that they are bad - possibly
from a 'nearby lightning strike' - and it's up to me to replace them with 2 new
more robust diodes or pay for having them replaced if I send them the K3. I
guess the new robust parts are warranty, but replacing them isn't!

Elecraft is sending me the 2 new more robust diodes. I do not have the
equipment to remove the old ones and replace them, nor do I have the desire to
work on anything smaller than a 1/8 watt resistor.

So . is there anyone within 50 miles or so of Lapeer, MI who can change
these new diodes when I get them? And if you don't have a K3, this would be
a good chance to see one and try it out!

Most QRP contests have a QRP limit of 5 watts for both CW and SSB. I know
the ARRL does that. ARCI, and I think GQRP, had QRP on SSB limited to 10
watts, I think in an attempt to account for the disparity between the two
modes

QRP-ARCI defines QRP as:

QRP operation for QRP-ARCI purposes is defined as operation with a
transmitter power output of 5 watts or less (CW)(A1) and 10 watts PEP or
less (SSB)(A3J). QRP-ARCI awards are based on these output levels.

.
I believe most other QRP organizations agree with this, although there are
some groups / contests that specify that SSB QRP is 5 watts (or less) output
on all modes. As far as I know, no one uses the well discussed (and
sometimes over discussed!) use of ERP in QRP power levels.

I just received my K3 kit and love the radio already! I have a problem
however... After about 1 hour of usage the VFO A encoder stopped working
for
some strange reason. I swapped it for VFO B so it is definitely the
encoder
and nothing else. But now I'm not able to use the menu or CONFIG since VFO
B
is a must for this. Does anyone know if either N4PY or Ham Radio deluxe

A new encoder will be ordered on Monday of course but from Elecraft to

I wanted something different, but it had to be *very* nice in order to
'beat' the Heil Pro-Set Plus which was the alternative. My requirements:
extremely comfortable, great aesthetics, well-made, top sound performance,
serviceable, innovative, good value. So, I went with the Sennheiser PC350.
Plugged it right into the K3, turned the bias on, adjusted the EQ, and I am
one happy camper. I'll take the $$ I saved and put it towards another

Re: [Elecraft] K3: recommendations wanted for NR setting

2008-08-05 Thread hank k8dd
Pre Firmware 2.20 I uses AGC SLP 4 and AGC THR 8 to
make the K3 sound like the K2 AGC. At least on CW.

And used NR F2-4. That worked great at Field Day.

Since Firmware 2.20 I cannot find a setting that accomplishes
two things
Sounds like a K2 and the audio level for NR on off is about
the same
And with NR on (most any setting) now the received CW sounds
soft, or very slow attack time. At higher speeds it is possible to
miss a leading dit in a character.

But at this point AGC SLP and THR both equal to 2 works fine
(to my ears) with loud and weak signals, but when I turn on NR

the received signal goes very soft. If I set NR = F1-1 through
F1-3 it isn't too bad.

Re: [Elecraft] Using Voice Files along with Mike Input on a K3

2008-07-30 Thread hank k8dd

Ed .

If you look at http://www.writelog.com/support/wlso2r.pdf it shows how to
set up the mike for SSB contesting. If you ignore the Left Rig and the
W5XD Multi+ keyer and just look at the Right Rig and microphone setup you
will see how to keep the audio from the other ops out of your mike.

In N1MM configurer you can select the line to mute when playing wav files.
This is also mostly the Mic input. Check
http://pages.cthome.net/n1mm/html/English/BasicFunctions.htm#Recording_Wav_files
for recording info.

I have found that if the MON level is turned up so you can hear yourself,
with MIC + Line in you will get feedback when you activate PTT. I'm
assuming this will not happen if the mike is plugged into the sound card.

Also, if you want to record both TX and RX audio in the contest you have to
select =PHONES. This will send TX RX audio to the sound card at a level
controlled by the AF Gain control (NOT Line Out level) and possibly
overdrive your sound card.

I tried to use a K3 in the IOTA contest on SSB but ran into a problem.
I couldn't figure out how to satisfactory key the K3 with wave
files from N1MM Logger and also use a Heil Headset. Reading the manual it
appears that you can have audio input from ONLY the front panel, rear

panel, OR line in. The wave files were coming via the line in and the
mike via the Front panel. Did I over look something?

A fellow team member and I considered paralleling the mike and sound
card input but we didn't want a live mike while wave files were playing.
The Elecraft web site says that their digital voice recorder (KDVR3) is
not yet shipping. For now, does this mean that that I have to use my
MFJ voice keyer (configured for a Kenwood radio) if I want audio files AND
mike capabilities?

When using a K3, how are others handling SSB contests?

Allow the sidetone to be independently controlled (and be able to change

Personally I like the PITCH to be adjustable without having to listen to it.
And the sidetone adjustable without having to listen to it.
And the sidetone level independent of the AF Gain control.

And I'd like to be able to record both the TX and RX audio at a fixed level

I don't adjust the sidetone level very often. Not sure I'd like to
have it vary with the AF Gain. I think I like having it as a reference
audio level. Mine is set at 25.

What I would like is the option to adjust the PITCH without hearing
the sidetone. In other words, listening to a weak signal I want to
adjust it's pitch (offset) for best copy. Different signal conditions
can warrant the use of different pitches for optimum copy. But you
can't do this with the sidetone overriding the received audio. Even if
you set the sideone level to zero the received audio is blocked
whenever PITCH is on.

Re: [Elecraft] Firmware Stability

Actually it wasn't too long
ago that I was talking with Wayne when I'd had radio troubles and I'd
mentioned that I wished there was a way to erase memories. He mentioned
that he didn't understand why I'd want that when all I had to do was
just write something else back over the top of it. Mainly its just
cause I'm anal and like to have things clean and tidy Anyway he
decided it was a relatively simple fix and poof it showed up. That was
a fun one cause many other than myself appreciated that one.

As well I had a slight problem in the way the scan feature worked. I
sent an email to Wayne mentioning that I was having an issue that was
very repeatable that resulted in the receiver being muted with no way to
get out of it other than starting scanning again until it stops or power
cycling the radio. There was a beta version of code that hadn't even
been released yet that Wayne emailed me and poof my problem was solved.

I always wondered how things got to the top of the wish list!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware 2.19

2008-07-24 Thread hank k8dd
Gee, I don't know To only say the audio went up, or down, when I
loaded X.xx doesn't tell me anything!

What was the AGC SLP? AGC THR? NR settings?
With out that information, yes - it can go up or it can go down when you
turn NR on!

I just loaded 2.20.
The audio went way up when I turned on NR - I was using the XG2, 50 uV on
80M.
SLP= 4, THR= 8   NR= F2-2 and I had really liked the way the radio sounded
with the 2.1x's, but with FW 2.20, NR would hurt it was so loud. Almost
triple while monitoring AFv.

Changing SLP = 14, THR = 5 got the audio real close . but the radio
sounds like crap. OK . that's a personal observation of what it sounds
like to me on 80 CW!

I'm not sure I understand everything I have read about SLP and THR! Nor do
I want to. I want a radio that sounds close to or better than the K2!

So there's what I think.

Also with my K3 there is a significant reduction in the audio level
when NR is on. I don't see how the AGC would affect the NR. It's just a
function of the filtering that reduces the volume when the NR is
activated. Or is there something I am missing.

My AF gain is at the 9 o'clock position, AFX on, BIN option.

I use a couple of small RCA/Radio Shack speakers.

To my ears, the difference between NR on/off is really close to the
same audio level.

But as Lyle says, experiment, it is quite revealing!!

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Low power in RTTY

2008-07-20 Thread hank k8dd
I got in NAQP RTTY late for an hour or so last night. Only used 20, 40
80M and the power was 100 watts out the whole time - at least when I looked
at the wattmeter!
I did watch the PA Temp, after I heard the fans speed up, which made it into
the mid 40's C.
The only problem was the AF Gain was controlling the Line Out to the PC - a
problem with trying to record the contest with both RX and TX signals.
Every time I'd change the AF Gain I had to adjust the Line In level on the
PC! And with =PHONES turned off you can't record the TX side of the QSO.
Kind of a PITA.
Other than that the K3 using 500 Hz (both first IF crystal and second IF
DSP) was a real treat!

I worked for a few hours during the NAQP RTTY contest this weekend and ran
into a strange issue. On 15 and 20 I get full power out while running
RTTY

on the K3. On 40 and 80 I am limited to about 20 watts.

I am running versions 2.02/1.77 of the firmware. I normally run in 'Data
A'

mode but tried 'AFSK A' as well. SWR was similar for all bands as was the
software (Writelog MMTTY).

I looked at every control and configuration that I could think of that
might

be different betwen the bands but couldn't find anything. It may well be
that I have a setting wrong but I cannot find it. To try and isolate the
issue I left everything the same except the band button, and still ran
into

the problem.

On CW, the power out is consistent between all bands.

Any help would be appreciated. If this is a known firmware issue let me
know and I will load one of the betas.

Thanks and 73,

Check out the July 2008 CQ magazine, page 74, the Beginners Corner column.
There is a very good write-up on page 79 on how to do this.

How detrimental would it be if I broke up the power cable going to my K3

this sheer stupidity on my part? (It would be convenient for me to do

I'm confused. Isn't the antenna tuner connected to TX antenna? Are you

Suppose I was working cross band and had it the way you want it. How would

I really would like to know why you want to convert it to mono. No kidding.

Tom, N5GE - SWOT 3537 - Grid EM12jq

I'm not sure why you would want to select 'none' for the second RX antenna
 You wouldn't hear much.
It appears the SUB RX can have the same antenna as the first RX or the BNC
below ANT 2 for a separate antenna.

We used to go to Zone 2 up on James Bay for CQ WW SSB with either a TenTec
Omni D or a Corsair (it was years ago) and on 40M we would TX around 7050
and listen 7050 7195 with the remote VFO. It mixed audio to mono
headphones. Didn't really care what freq the station was calling on - just
work them. Hopefully the EU VE stations were on 7050 and the US stations
were on 195!

Some people might find left ear / right ear from main RX / sub RX .. I
used to find that very distracting before I kind of became used to it.

And . ask me my opinion in person some time about my thoughts on pileup

Re: [Elecraft] RE: [dxlab] K3 will keep CW filters when QSYing SSB

2008-07-15 Thread hank k8dd
I don't see this with Logger32 . But I had to add some lines to the .ini
file
so the program would change the filter to what I specified - 700 Hz on CW,
2.7 KHz on SSB and 1.0 KHz on Data.
If the program does not tell the K3 how to set the filter when you change
band and / or mode it will revert to the previous mode and you have to use
NORM. At least with the current firmware!

Hi friends,

I am posting this message to the Elecraft, microHAM and DXLab lists,
because all three are involved. Sorry for crossposting. Anyway, it
probably won't appear in the Elecraft list, because this list
considers
me as a spammer (?).

Say i'm listening to CW on my K3, and see a interesting spot on
Spotcollector. I click on it, Commander and my microKEYER
will QSY the
K3 to the spot frequency.

However, i usually end up in SSB with the previous filter setting, ie
the narrow CW filter, and of course it's not enough for SSB.
Of course,
i only have to press the NORM button to broaden it, but
it's annoying.

I don't have the same problem when QSYing from SSB to CW (the
width is
reduced as it should).

Has anyone the same problem ? Any advice ?

The JBL noise canceling headphones feel better, sound better, but after 5 or

don't sound as good.
Just picked up a very good pair of computer gaming headset and electret boom

Re: [Elecraft] LINIX PCs and ham SW?

I have a Asus eeePC 4G.
Great little laptop - little is the key word!
It came with Linux - Xandros derivitive. Fairly difficult to install other
software on it. I was going to put Ubuntu on it, but the first disk I came
across was the XP CD, so I stuck a stripped down XP on the eeePC.
Love the 30 or 40 second boot time. It runs K3 Utility, Writelog, Office,
and FT-817 Commander.
I think if I were ordering one today, as much as I love Linux, I would
probably get it with XP. Besides - IMHO, and I will probably be taken
to task for this statement - the Linux Ham Radio software is really lame
compared to the Ham Radio software written for Windows.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] UTILITY Improvements

And a good request it is .
There are functions in the K3 Utility program to copy CW and RTTY that other
programs can handle.

Then there is the the function to send commands to the K3.
And you can back up the configuration (but not the memories). And set the
filters.
I guess I'd like to be able to back up the configuration, memories and
filter setup to the logging PC, a network drive, a CD or a USB memory.

Now that would be great!

I've heard this request before. It's being considered. It requires
support

work in the MCU firmware as well as the K3 Utility.

I'm not sure whether this should be part of the K3 Utility (whose function
is firmware loading and initial setup configuration) and a more general
program like Ham Radio Deluxe that is an operational support - connected
all the time sort of program. Maybe memory save/restore belongs in that
category of program.

tap Auto Notch one time to turn it off. The way it is now
you tap it and it goes to Manual. Then tap it again to turn
it off.Waste of a tap!
Besides, when you have it in Manual you cannot adjust it
until you hold the Auto Notch.
Seems to me it should be tap it to turn Auto Notch on, tap
it again to turn it off.
For Manual:
Hold Auto Notch to put it in Manual (and you can adjust it
with VFO knob). Tap it to turn Manual off.

OK, how do I get the auto-notch to work? Mine is either OFF or MANUAL.
I have been thinking it just wasn't implemented yet. Using MANUAL, it

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 and Logger32 logging program

2008-06-07 Thread hank k8dd
If you click on a DX spot, or type in the frequency to change to another band
and / or mode and the filters do not switch to the default settings
And you are using Logger32 - Here is the answer to get SSB settings on SSB,
Data settings on Data and CW settings on CW sent to the K3!

In the help file there is a section on the K3, but that is for pre-MCU 2.00.
Here is an update to how it works for MCU 2.00 and above:

Filter selection
The K2 and K3 should always store those filter setting by each mode. If you
select the mode by manually or
clicking DX spot then in the future they will select the filter by stored
setting.
There is another way to select a filter directly from Logger32. Add one or two
of the following section in
the Logger32.ini. “n” in FWn is Filter number of your K2. FW is the
DSP bandwidth on your K3 (see
examples below). The K3 will select the proper first IF (roofing) filter.

For radio 1 (Elecraft) put following lines (Sample for K3)

For K3 below MCU Firmware 2.00
[Elecraft Filter 1] # This is for Radio 1
USB=K22; FW1;   # K22; puts the K2 or K3 in 'extended mode;
FWx sets the filter to FLx
LSB=K22; FW1;
RTTY=K22; FW2;
CW=K22; FW2;
For K3 MCU Firmware 2.00 and above
[Elecraft Filter 1]This is for Radio 1
USB=K31;FW0270;FW0270; # K31; puts the K3 in 'extended mode'
FW0270; is 2700 Hz for the DSP filter
LSB=K31;FW0260;FW0260; # K31; puts the K3 in 'extended mode'
FW0260; is 2600 Hz for the DSP filter
RTTY=K31;FW0100;FW0100;# K31; puts the K3 in 'extended mode'
FW0100; is 1000 Hz for the DSP filter
CW=K31;FW0070;FW0070;  # K31; puts the K3 in 'extended mode'
FW0070; is 700 Hz for the DSP filter

K3 DSP filter is set to the closest lower 50 Hz. i.e. FW0069; will default to
650 Hz.

For radio 2 (Elecraft) put following lines (Sample for K2).
[Elecraft Filter 2]# This is for Radio 2
USB=K22; FW1;
LSB=K22; FW2;
RTTY=K22; FW3;
CW=K22; FW4;

You may need to repeat the command for certain filter selections, especially in
K3.
CW=K22; FW2; FW2;

[Elecraft] PA Temp

2008-06-04 Thread hank k8dd
How hot does your K3/100 PA run?
And how hot is safe?

I was sitting in a pileup at 90 watts and watching the PA Temp - it got up to
around 41 or 42 C (about 100 F) so I turned the fan up a notch or two and it
cooled right back down to around 20 C (70 F).

How did you turn up the fan? I assumed that the K3
would speed up the fan by
itself when the temperature rose above thresholds
 defined in the firmware.

The fans will increase speed when the PA gets hot, but
while I was sitting there at 90 or 100 watts, pressing
the function key to send my call over and over, I
checked the PA temp and watched it rise, so it got me
wondering!

I'm not at home at the moment, but I think I went to
CONFIG:PA norWhen you turn the VFO B knob you can
step through the fan speeds. I had to turn the volume
down and you could just barely hear the fan speed come
up. And you could see the PA temp come down real
fast.

The main reason I was wondering is because on one of
my K2/100's you can definitely tell that the KPA-100
has been run very hot by looking at the solder pads.

Never did work the XE2 on 6 M CW!

[Elecraft] [K3]Changing band/mode and filters don't

2008-05-31 Thread hank k8dd
I'm not sure how many use Logger32, but when I am chasing
DX spots and change band and / or mode, the filters do not go
to the default settings. The same thing happens if I type in a
frequency. Logger32 knows, from the band plan, which mode
to use by the frequency.
If I go from, for example - 14022, CW, 700 Hz to 7133, SSB the
K3 will not always go to the 2.7 KHz filter - sometimes it stays
on 700 Hz and sometimes it goes to the II default of 400 Hz.
I is 700 for CW and 2.7 for SSB. II is 400 for CW and 2.7 for SSB.

The same thing can happen when I (rarely) use the Band up/down
to change bands. If, when I go to another band, the frequency
there is on a different mode the filter does not always go to to
that default setting.

So is it a firmware thing or is it a Logger32 thing?

I'm glad it wasn't me or any of the programs that I use.

Apparently the default I or II setups do not tie the filter with
the mode or it's just not using the default setup that you
have saved in the K3 when you use external control.

Exactly the same thing happens using MixW.

Doing some investigation with the command tester in the Firmware Utility, I
think there is a bug in the K3 firmware. It is not changing the filter
bandwidth if a band change is made by CAT command and this results in a mode
change because the mode last used on the new band is different from the mode
you were previously using.

If you are on 14.025 CW, and you change frequency to 28280 by sending the
command FA0002828; the K3 changes to that 10m frequency. The mode used
on 10m is the mode that was used the last time you were on 10m, but the
filter bandwidth remains the same as it was on 14MHz. So if you were last on
10m using SSB, you will end up in SSB with a CW filter bandwidth. If you
were last on CW, you will be in CW mode on 10m. This explains why you
observe that the filter sometimes changes, and sometimes doesn't. If you
were last on 10m in CW, if the software sends a mode change command after
the frequency change command, the K3 will go to 10m CW and then change to
SSB which will cause the filter bandwidth to change correctly. If the K3 was
last in SSB on 10m, then it will change to 10m SSB and the narrow bandwidth
become wrongly set as the new SSB filter bandwidth. The subsequent mode
change command won't do anything.

should not be possible to 'accidentally' overwrite a memory. I do not
need multiple stacking thingummies or anything like that, I simply want
to be able to put memories in there and not be able to overwrite them by
not concentrating enough. During a contest or some other frantic time,
my brain does not always cover every eventuality. Come to think of it,
it is not that much good at other times :)

As an Elecraft lover for over 6 years I have no wish to use another

as it is basically firmware driven, I see no problem in wishing the

The NOTCH button.
Instead of cycling Autonotch, manual, off
Make it -Tap NOTCH and AutoNOTCH comes on.
Tap it again and AutoNOTCH goes off.
Or
HOLD NOTCH and it goes to MANUAL NOTCH and you
can adjust the notch frequency.
Tap it and it goes off.

or

The ability to use WIDTH while you are transmitting.
And have the buttons on the right side work while transmitting,
and not screw up the CW being sent

or

Have both RX and TX audio go out the LINE OUT at a fixed level,
not at the AF Gain level.

or

PTT should over ride any CW delay settings when not in QSK.
No delay at the end of a memory from the PC (CQ, Exchange, etc) when using PTT
control.
But you would want a CW delay when sending from the paddle/keyer

Those would be some of my thoughts.

Yes, very. And if you press most any of the buttons while there is a CW
signal being transmitted the CW will sound really strange, the PTT delay
goes away causing the amp relay to operate with every element. And it
does this until the PTT goes away with the end of the memory from the PC,

If I remember right, RIT and the Speed Mic gain controls are about the

  unreasonably slow switching times.
10msec or longer is unreasonably slow and I think it's 'unreasonable' to
blame the manufacturer of the radio because the amp manufacturer saved a
few bucks and used a cheap, slow relay instead of a proper RF relay.

None of my Icoms give me the ability to alter the key delay for slow

The correct approach is to mod the amp to improve matters. the other

  Brendan EI6IZ

Well, that's a tough call to say it's not a problem with the Elecraft rigs.
I took a fair amount of flak from the true believers because a long time
ago I said the Elecraft shut down and other radios did not shut down, so
it must not be a problem with the Ameritron amps.

Before I put the Relay Accelerator on my AL-1200 the KPA-100 on the
K2 would shut down. The relay would still key, but no output.
No other indication that there was no output until I glanced at the wattmeter.
Great way to lose a run frequency!!

None of my Icom radios exhibited this problem - They may chop off a tad of the
first element, but this has never caused a problem without the relay
accelerator.
And I'm not about to take it out to see what happens with the K3/100.

Maybe the K2's RF comes up to quick compared to the other radios.
Maybe the K2 shuts down too quick with that short time that it takes the relay
to pick. I don't know . and at this point - I don't care -
I've worked around
the problem . whether it's an Elecraft problem or not!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and linear amp

2008-03-21 Thread hank k8dd

Bob speaks the truth here. The K6XX fast relay circuit
is the answer.
The problem with Elecraft rigs switching Ameritron amps
has existed with the K2/100 and, so it appears, now with
the K3/100.
I have had the K6XX fast relay circuit in my AL-1200
working with the K2/100's. No KPA-100 shutdowns
since I put it in a couple of years ago. And there has
been no problem with the K3/100.
It is a simple fix to allow the K2/100 K3/100 to work
with the slower 12VDC Ameritron amp relays . if you
need it.
73HankK8DD

Roger
Go to this site http://www.k6xx.com/radio/fastrely.pdf

K6XX has a need relay speed-up circuit that might be
applicable to the relay in your amp. I suppose that it
requires the relay to be a 12v relay, though. Don't
know what you actually have.

Good luck and 73

[Elecraft] This coming Thursday (Friday GMT)

2008-02-10 Thread hank . k8dd
This coming week we are headed to Suriname in northern South America.
The dates we will be on the air are Feb 13 - 18
In the past when we go to the DX side of radio for a major contest I make
it a habit of reserving Thursday evening for 40 Meter 2XQRP. So. I will
be on approximately 7040 plus or minus calling CQ QRP from PZ5DD and
I'll stick around untill there are no more QRP stations calling. I'm sure there
will be others, but hopefully no one will spot me on the PacketCluster network!!

The plan is to get on about 0200Z February 15.
That's Thursday evening about 9 PM Eastern Time.
I will probably be around 25 wpm - but if you figure it's me and call
at a slower
speed I will try to match your speed - N problem.

The call is PZ5DD.

Next weekend we will be in the ARRL DX contest using the call PZ5WW Multi
Single. There will be 4 operators - AC8W W5JAY KB8TXZ and me. And the
exchange we'll be giving will probably be the standard ole 5NN NNN . That's
599 for the RST (I know, I know, but it's the standard!) 999 for approximately
nine hundred and ninety nine watts. So if you find us - give us a QSO, and we
will slow down to the slowest caller.

There is a very good chance that I will show up on 18096 Monday after
the contest
and see if there is any QRP activity. I will try to let the QRP
reflectors know an
hour or so in advance when I'll be showing up on 17M

On 40M I hesitate to go down to 7030 because that is down in DX country and
I am not trying to generate a pile-up, but I want to work 2XQRP -
unless it's a QRP
pile-up, that is!

72 73 and hope to work a lot of 2XQRP while we are down there.
HankK8DDPZ5DD

Please reply direct - I have the reflectors on postpone / no mail
while I'm on vacation!

[Elecraft] CQ WW CW a K3

2007-11-25 Thread hank k8dd
I just got home from CQ WW CW . a bunch of us got together at a
major station and we each picked a band and used our own calls.

10 M - no operator showed up and I don't think the band did either.
15 M - a brand new Omni VII
20 M - me and my K2/100 w/DSP
40 M - AC8W and my other K2/100
80 M - K8AQM and his K2/100
160 M - N8EA and a borrowed K3/100 with no serial number!
The K1/100 had the 2.7, 1.8 and 500 filters as I remember.

I got to sit in front of the K3 for a little over an hour and came away
with two observations . Well - three.

1. Best damn receiver I've sat in front of!
2. The small VFO knob had absolutely no drag. I don't know if they are
all like that, or if the guy who built it didn't do something. I don't
know his call or if I heard it I don't remember it.

3. This is the long, hard to explain thing.
Let's say I am listening to 1830.000 to a DX station. VFO A
The DX station says QSX 1829 so I set VFO B to 1829.00
The RIT is on and is + 1 KHZ - so A reads 1830.100
Now I want to listen to the pile on the TX frequency, so I press REV.
Now my TX freq reads 1829.100 and my RX freq on the bottom reads 1830.00
I find where the last station worked is and release the REV button. The
TX freq is going to be 100 Hz low!
Seems to me that the RIT should stay with the frequency and not the
location of that frequency.
As I saw it this afternoon that could cause me to not be on the TX
frequency where I want to be transmitting.

But, like I said in Nr 1 - best receiver I've ever used.

He has two TS-450s for SO2R and a K2/100. His next question threw me
Do you think I should use the 450s and go SO2R or use the K2 and go SO1R?
My reply was Use the 450s and I can beat you - no problem!

The end result - He went with the K2. And we are within 1000 points of
each other. It's down to the log checking!

This morning on the phone he said How much you think I can get for two

Re: [Elecraft] Interesting K3 Pan Adapter Development

2007-11-01 Thread hank k8dd
Personally I'm not a fan of panadapters or fancy displays on radios.
Give me a tuning knob, volume control, and a good front end like the
K2/100 has (maybe some day a K3 when Run 2 runs out the door) and that's
about all I need!

WriteLog allows you to do the same thing as N1MM and a few other logging
programs - point click on the band map and cluster spots.

However this mode of operation pointing and clicking spots or band map
entries is a very small part of the total contest venue -- except at the
multi-op stations for the multiplier station, where you have more time
to fiddle with the mouse (or knobs) to tune in the station than a run or
search and pounce station has.

So, yes, there is room for a mouse on the operating desk just not
much use for it when you are running or sweeping the band looking for
new stations.

These are my opinions and I own them!

I wouldn't. I think the open spirit of Amateur Radio go hand in hand

I would not, presently, buy a radio that I could not at least upload

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 Rcv Ant Question

2007-10-11 Thread hank k8dd

I was talking to a friend on the phone tonight and he came up with a
K3 question .
How many dB of isolation are there between the main antenna ports and
the RX antenna ports? I ask because on my current radio (an Omni VI),
the noise floor when listening on my 'aux' antenna is raised when my
transmit antenna is connected to the main antenna port.
Of course, there are outboard devices and other mods to help this
problem, but I wondered how well the K3 handles this without 'help'?

There IS a simple solution: retrict the contests to a small slice of

The same thing happens when there is a major you name it contest .
The CW guys say the SSB guys run rampant all over the band ..
And the CW guys say the CW contesters run rampant all over the band .
The QRP guys say that when ever there is a non-QRP event on the band

It's hard to restrict the running rampant. As more and more of us

should be less and less of a problem on weekends!

You might not want to hear the QRM from the other station (which your

Just hit the foot switch (connected to PTT) and you'll mute the RX

The scenario you articulate here is EXACTLY why many CW contesters
 prefer PTT on CW.

That is one reason . The other is when a slower station responds to
a CQ or QRZ the considerate
op (even in a 100++ rate situation) will slow down to their speed (at
least I do) and PTT will keep the
amp relay from dropping between words or characters.

With the XIT and / or RIT on, can you cause the resultant frequency,to

For example - I'm on 7025.22 and the RIT is up 1.33 kc, so I'm listening
on 7025.33 and transmitting on 7026.55.
I'd like to press a button (or press hold) and clear the RIT and have
the VFO read 7026.55.
On the Icom 746 you press the RIT or XIT to turn them on and press
them, for 2 sec to add the shift frequecny to the operating frequency.

Or can you do that already with the K3?
