My thinking was to restore from an earlier workspace then reinstall the IC-7300 but I will take a look at the controls first. Since you use DXLab I'd suggest checking Commander's "User-defined Controls" configuration. Is there a slider for Mic gain? If so, is it configured to "Initialize radio"? In Commander click "Help" then select "sliders" for more info. Re: [Elecraft] k3 Mic gain self resetting to 1
Try this: shut down the computer, and turn the gain (etc.) to their correct settings. Then turn the K3 off and on again. Do the settings reset? If so, the problem is in the K3. If not, it has something to do with the computer and the program. 73, Victor, 4X6GP Rehovot, Israel Formerly K2VCO CWops no. 5 http://www.qsl.net/k2vco/ On 16/06/2023 20:54, Russ Edelen wrote: Some further info. Your results suggest that the mic you're using is pretty hot, so you want to set MIC GAIN to Low in the Menu, then follow instructions in the Manual for setting Mic Gain and COMP. Re: [Elecraft] K3 mic cmp settings with kenwood mc-43s mic
First from your description, you may have RF getting into the transmit audio. This will sound like distortion and will get worse as the CMP value is increased. I use a Heil PR 781 mike which is a dynamic mike and has much lower output level than the Kenwood MC-43.I run with mike gain such that I see 4 to 5 bars of ALC, no more, and 2 to 4 bars on the CMP scale. This has the CMP value at 12 to 15. With the Kenwood mike, the MIC SEL should be set to FP.L. Then adjust the MIC gain value such that you get 4 to 5 bars of ALC indication. Then set the COMP value such that you get 2 to 4 bars of CMP. In all cases, the CMP indication should not be greater than 10 on the scale. By pressing an holding the MODE switch to get to the TEST mode, and then setting the MON value to about 30, while using headphones you can activate transmit mode and listen to your audio with compressing, EQ and ALC characteristics. If it sounds good in TEST mode it will most likely sound good over the air unless one is getting RF back into the audio. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 10/2/2015 10:54 AM, way235 wrote: Jim I set MIC GAIN to Low in the Menu, then I followed the instructions in the Manual for setting Mic Gain and COMP. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mic connector options
The Heil adapter for connecting a 1/8 plug to the 8-pin front panel jack is the AD-1-K. I have my headset connected to the rear panel MIC connector and my computer sound card connected to the rear panel LINE-IN connector. I have not had any problems with it other than forgetting to change the mode to DATA then wondering why I have no audio on the digital modes. As others have mentioned, you may need to just turn off the MIC+LINE setting as this is how my K3 is set up. 73, Mike KI0HA - Original Message - From: Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com To: Bill Frantz fra...@pwpconsult.com Cc: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, May 16, 2013 11:25:07 PM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mic connector options Bill, I would suggest that you can obtain a Heil Kenwood adapter that is used for the Elecraft ProSet-K2 (I forget the exact Heil designation) that will allow you to connect the CM500 mic - you will also need a 1/8 inch stereo female to 1/4 inch male adapter to match the headphone jack on the adapter. [Elecraft] K3 Mic noise while monitoring eq.
Hello, While trying to adjust the mic equalisation I am getting a continual low level high end electrical noise, like whistle or very slight feedback through while monitoring on headphones or speaker. With more compression it brings it out more obviously but it is there with no compression. It is there even on low mic gain but much less. It even persists even with no microphone, data lead or cables plugged in. I have unplugged EVERYTHING apart from the power, put monitor speaker on, and PTT and it is there. At zero mic gain no noise but it rises as the mic gain does. If I cut the extreme high end it goes a little but I need some high end boost for my mic. Its not to horrendous, its only just perceptible I shouldn't think it wouldn’t carry through to audio with a 2.7Khz bandwidth but I cant be sure. Can I just assume its just internal noise being picked up on the monitor amp or do I have to worry about my TX audio quality? Has anyone else noticed this effect? Do I have duff mic pre-amp shielding somewhere? Its not to horrendous, its only just perceptible I shouldn't think it wouldn't carry through to audio with a 2.7Khz bandwidth but I cant be sure. Can I just assume its just internal noise being picked up on the monitor amp or do I have to worry about my TX audio quality? Has anyone else noticed this effect? Do I have duff mic pre-amp shielding somewhere? It should work if you use the Kenwood adapter for that microphone. Check the color band on the adapter. [Elecraft] K3 Mic Gain
I recently decided to test a very old low output/low impedance hand mic on my K3 when I soon found some confusing information in the latest K3 manual. My K3's firmware is current. I have two concerns: first, pg. 20 of the owner's manual mentions additional mic gain can be enabled by tapping the 3 button in the MAIN:MIC SEL menu but when I tried the radio responded with N/A. I researched the firmware notes and found a change to this control was made back in MCU 4.31 so that this gain 'boost' (to the front panel mic only) can be enabled/disabled by pressing the 7 button, not the 3 button as shown in the manual. Also the boost indicator has changed from ' to a high bar symbol. I'm unclear on the DSP mic boost (H or Hi) reference in the notes. I hope corrections to the K3 owner's manual pages 20 and 52 are on Elecraft's to do list. The second concern involves mic impedance. Except for a brief mention of Low-Z (~600 ohms) on pg. 13 and MIC MONO; hi- or low-Z on pg 20 I haven't found any mention of where Elecraft differentiates between high and low mic impedance nor what may be too high or too low. Do any of you more experienced K3 users and audio professionals know? 73, Gary N6LRV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mic Gain
Gary, Regarding the mic Z, you can use any mic, high or low Z. I am using a D104 with my K3, and as you know conventional wisdom says they want extremely high Z. Use what mic you have and use TX EQ to get it to sound good. Do any of you more experienced K3 users and audio professionals know? For all practical purposes, nearly all mics likely to be used with ham gear are low impedance mics. As an audio professional, I own a bunch of low impedance pro mics, some of which have fairly low output. All work just fine with every ham rig I've ever plugged them into. All you need is a properly wired cable adapter. Although I don't own any high-Z mics and haven't tried any with a K3, I would expect them to work fine too, simply because the K3 has such great adaptability in the form of mic gain and TXEQ. I can't comment on changes to firmware and its documentation. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mic input rear panel
Hello Pete, The rear panel mic jack is a stereo (T-R-S) jack with the mono mic signal on the tip. The ring is not connected. It is an unbalanced input and accepts balanced or unbalanced dynamic mics but only unbalanced electret condenser mics. When RL.X bias is on, it supplies 8 volts. You can glean most of this by perusing the schematics. You can also see a summary of all the KIO3 connections in the chapter 7 sampler for the KE7X K3 book. Have a look at www.ke7x.com. This mic has not been modified and the pinouts are as delivered from the factory. There is an on-off button on the mic, leave that off. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Mic Experimentation with Kenwood MC-60
Don, Actually, I do have an MC-60A here I guess. It definitely does have the preamp, the battery pack underneath and so on but the mic label on the base says MC-60. I read somewhere on the Internet that the A model is not identified by the label on the base. There is a part of your message that I would like to clarify. I have examined the relevant material in the K3 user guide and still I am not sure. The K3 provides voltage on pin 6 but the MC-60 expects voltage on pin 5. What I don't understand is IF I were to rewire this so that the voltage was placed on pin 5 (I assume I would do this within the base itself and not rewire the actual connector) then do I create a problem for the K3?? I am assuming that I would have to make sure that pin 5 was NOT connected to anything but that I took the pin 6 voltage offered by the K3 and route it to whatever pin 5 was hooked up to. 73, phil, K7PEH On Mar 5, 2011, at 11:29 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: Phil, You have to get the K3 ALC meter to illuminate 5 to 7 bars with the compression set to zero. The M60A has a preamp that needs voltage on pin 5, but unfortunately, that is the part that is not compatible with the K3 which provides voltage in pin 6. Phil, Actually, you can check out the wiring as well as I can. Schematics and pinout information has been complied on many microphones by G4WPW and can be found at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/rg4wpw/date.html - this is a wonderful resource for anyone contemplating use of a microphone that is branded differently from their transceiver. No sense in me reading the schematic and relating it to you when you can do it yourself. From what I see, if you can operate with the preamp off, you do not need to make any changes. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/6/2011 11:24 AM, Phil Hystad wrote: Don, Actually, I do have an MC-60A here I guess. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Mic Experimentation with Kenwood MC-60
Coming late to this thread - Phil, don't use the preamp. You do not need it. Open up the mic base and wire around it. It can be a source of RFI. My MIC level is 29, the impedance switch on the mic is at 500 ohms, and I get good audio reports on my MC-60A. The up/down buttons are useful on occasion. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Mic Experimentation with Kenwood MC-60
You do need to speak close to the mic when transmitting, it is designed for that kind of use. All of the Kenwood dynamic mics (desk or hand) have similar sensitivity based on the specifications ... between -69 and -71 dB at 500 - 600 Ohms. That indicates they are designed for close talking - the hand mics (MC-42S, MC-43S) specify their sensitivity at 2 cm from the mic. Since audio is a square law phenomena, the microphone will be 6 dB less sensitive with each doubling of the distance so working 16 away from a desk mic will result in more than 20 dB less output than holding it 1 from the mouth. Note: the preamp in the MC-60A has a gain of 12 dB (Preamp in = Preamp out). 73, ... Joe, W4TV On 3/6/2011 2:19 AM, George A. [Elecraft] K3 MIC COMP
Dear Elecrafters, From the beginnig I put my K3#3616 on the air, mid november 2009, Firmware 3.53, I have noticed on ssb to obtain 10 on the CMP bargraph I'm obliged to increase the CMP knob to 20 to see the bargraph +/- 10. I know it is only approximative but is any adjustment available to increase slighty the bargraph excursion ? I haven't see any infos on the adjustment procedure or my eyes missed it. Re: [Elecraft] K3 mic gain and bias settings
Has anyone else noticed similar? I still haven't gotten a definitive answer, and am curious to see if others had experienced the same. Also, I've noticed that FM always requires a bit more mic gain to achieve the same level of ALC action as opposed to sideband. Can anyone confirm? 73 de James K2QI On Sat, Nov 6, 2010 at 7:54 PM, James Sarte k2qi@gmail.com wrote: Greetings Elecrafters, I previously posted a question to the group about mic gain settings in conjunction with the Elecraft MH2 hand mic. Prior to the slew of recent firmware updates, I had to set microphone bias to low, and keep the mic gain at 4 or 5. Anything higher, and ALC would start to reduce power. At those settings, speaking normally would give me 5-7 bars of ALC as recommended in the manual. Several folks have written to me stating that their K3 also behaved similarly and thus required the same amount of mic gain as I've written. Today however, after testing firmware versions 4.17, 4.18, and then reverting to 4.14 I've noticed that mic gain now needs to be set to 15 in order to achieve the same results. I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this. There doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary in terms of performance, but was curious as to why the sudden difference what else could have been affected. Re: [Elecraft] K3 mic gain and bias settings
Hello Philippe, Thanks for the reply. It seems something has changed in the way the K3 handles mic bias and gain with the latest firmware releases. I'm also wondering if there is a difference with the way mic gain is handled between modes; i.e. SSB and FM. I noticed that with FM, I have to crank in a little more mic gain over SSB to get the same amount of ALC action. For example, with 4.14, a mic gain setting of 15 is perfect for SSB while approximately 20 is needed for FM operation. As for the 4U1UN beacon, I'm still working on that issue with UN facilities management. [Elecraft] K3 mic gain and bias settings
Greetings Elecrafters, I previously posted a question to the group about mic gain settings in conjunction with the Elecraft MH2 hand mic. Any thoughts? -- 73 de James K2QI President UNARC/4U1UN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 mic gain and bias settings
Hi James, I installed firmware 4.17 then went back to 4.14 yesterday. What I noticed today is that I had to change the mic gain, but in the opposite direction of what you did. I am using a Peltor headset fitted with a HC-4 capsule, and I used mic gain around 20-22, compression 23, no bias, gain high to get 5-6 ALC bars (with compressor turned off, as manual states). Today I had to put mic gain at about 10-11 to have 5-6 bars. I don't know if something is related to upgrading to 4.17 and then back to 4.14, and I don't think it's worth resetting the whole rig, but I had the impression that something more has changed somewhere. [Elecraft] [K3} Mic gain/noise on xmit
This afternoon, chatting with a couple of locals on 6M, they mentioned I had some noise on my signal. One said it sounded like a radio in the background, the other characterized it as a loud hiss, with some intermittent high pitched blurbs. I disconnected the computer(RS232 audio IO) and external speakers, and the noise was still there. I turned on the monitor and could hear it. I'm using a Yamaha CM500 connected to the back panel. One of the guys was using a K3, and he commented that he was using the Elecraft hand mic, and his mic gain was set at 30. Mine was set at 9, which gave me 8/9 bars on the ALC meter(ops). A gain setting of 1 gives me the desired 5 bars. Now the monitor sounds like mild atmospheric noise, with a slight static burst every now and then. Is the CM500 that hot? Where else could the noise be coming from? Does the monitor pick up from received signals, or just the mic? 73, Mike NF4L __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Mike, That sounds like you have your MIC SEL menu set for H - try tapping the 1 button to change it to L so you can set your mic gain higher (and gives you more range). I don't know if it will help your noise, but it would explain the difference between your setting of 9 and the other fellow's 30. [Elecraft] K3 mic problem solved
It turns out that the rear panel jack is the culprit. I made an XLR to 8 pin cable and a mini TRS to 8 pin cable and tested via the front panel. The mic works just fine. The plan was to use the XLR to mini TRS and connect via the back panel. The cable was tested through the front panel with the second adaptor. This leaves the rear panel jack as the culprit. The Heil PR-20 mic needs higher gain settings than the hand mic I tested and they both needed the higher mic gain to be set via menu. I'll try and diagnose the rear panel jack later and I'm hoping the problem is something simple like a cold solder joint. That might explain the really weak signal when the mic is routed that way. tnx, Jim W5QM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

You may need to update your manual... You should be shooting for only 5-7 bars of ALC. Also make sure that you have compression off when trying to adjust these settings. Also, while the MIC SEL menu item is open, tap the 1 button to toggle between hi and lo gain and if it is an electret mic you should turn the bias on by tapping the 2 button. [Elecraft] K3 mic probs
Tnx to all that responded. I now have the hand mic working as it should be- all it took was to toggle the mic gain to high. However, the mic of choice will be via the rear panel and it will take some more detective work. The manual says it is a mono jack but I think what threw me was that the microKeyer employs a stereo plug. If indeed it is a mono jack, I will need to jumper the ring and the shield on the stereo plug that terminates the mic cord (other end is a 3 pin XLR). The mic is a dynamic one, a Heil PR-20. It seems to make sense that the low levels of less than stellar audio would be due to the return floating in a trs plug when the ring is unconnected. The shield must be picking up some to give me something. The cable is good so only other option is bad mic but I haven't tried it on another radio yet. Sounds like a project for a three day weekend, hi. If indeed it is a mono jack, I will need to jumper the ring and the shield on the stereo plug that terminates the mic cord (other end is a 3 pin XLR). Like many other manufacturers, Elecraft and microHAM both use TRS plugs and jacks in Mono mode simply by floating the ring. You should not jumper the ring and the sleeve - there is no need to do so as the sleeve contact in three conductor jacks is very close to the base of the plug (front panel). The shield must be picking up some to give me something. The expected connection for ANY dynamic microphone in both the K3 (rear panel) and microHAM microKEYER II (front panel- EXT Mic) is mic hot to the tip and mic return to the sleeve. The shield should float when using a mono input; it should be tied to the CHASSIS (shell) when using balanced input connection (e.g., a Foster, XLR connector or even a STEREO input TRS jack). 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mic questions
Phil, You would have to rewire the HM-36 for use with the K3 - the K3 uses a fixed microphone jack pinout (unlike the K2 which can be configured or many microphones). The Heil B10 microphone can be used if you change the Heil adapter to a Kenwood type 9or create your own adapter. The tone of your question tells me that you are capable of building your own adapter. Hooked it up to the rear mic input and use VOX with the mic mounted on a converted lamp boom. Works as well as a friend's that has $150 invested in a Heil mic and boom :) -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-Mic-adjustment-How-not-to-do-it-tp4572806p4575538.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 Mic adjustment - How not to do it. :)
Well K3 number 3903 has been online for 12 days now. I bought it mostly for CW and digital, but a few days ago, I figured I should wire up a mic. So since I have a few Yaesu hand mics, I rewired the 8-pin plug for the K3. That worked fine, but setting the EQ has been a nightmare. Monitoring from the K3 headphone jack and the receive on the Mark-V sounded weird, like it was through DSP noise reduction. I tried other dynamic mics in the rear panel and still, just a strange hollow sound. Tonight, I decided to make an MP3 recording to send to Elecraft tomorrow, to see what is wrong with my otherwise perfect K3. Guess what, nothing is wrong? It sounds normal. Now I realize that there is a small delay as the audio is run through the ADC, DSP, then DAC. It is only a few milliseconds, but when the headphone audio is mixed with your actual voice through bone conduction to the eardrums, you have a weird audio effect that is not true to the actual sound. The EQ is also impossible to adjust properly. My on the air reports were not good, as I had way too much high end EQ set to counter the lows from bone conduction. So my conclusion is that the only way to do it right, is to transmit to a seperate receiver that is feeding audio into a soundcard. Record the audio, then play it back. This effect doesn't seem as significant with an analog (no delay) audio chain, but I bet I can get the Mark-V sounding better by recording reception of the Mark-V on the K3. Maybe I can get on the Elecraft SSB net next Sunday to see if this all works. :) Hope this makes some sense, and helps others with audio setup. 73 - Bob -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-Mic-adjustment-How-not-to-do-it-tp4572806p4572806.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mic adjustment - How not to do it. :)
Perhaps you could use the DVR (if you had it) to record your voice and then play it back... ~Brett . Recording into HRD audio grabber to the PC is working fine, but I do want to get a KDVR3, when I have the money to order one. The Yaesu hand mic is pretty bad. I put a dynamic mic into the rear, and it sounds pretty good, but I don't want a desk mic for the K3, so I am going to try a cheap condenser element in the Yaesu mic housing. I bet it will work great. I am a cheap SOB, but I am starting to think that I may order an AM filter, and setup ESSB (maybe 3K) for ragchew, and the 2.7 for a tighter pattern. It is nice to have options. :) -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-Mic-adjustment-How-not-to-do-it-tp4572806p4573114.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] k3 Mic Suggestions
I am using K3 with HC5. This is the most efficient combination of all I tried. Mic gain about 17 at HI setting and compression 20 for stateside, 25 for DX and 28 in pileups. The only distortion I had was when the HC5 connection was intermittent. Re: [Elecraft] k3 Mic Suggestions
What has yet to be said in this worthy discussion is the simple reminder that some human voices just naturally sound lousy regardless of the microphone, transceiver, or speaking technique. Forty years of chain smoking exacts a price. Inarticulation cannot be electronically cleaned. Swallowing the mic, is as much operator error as forgetting to turn on SPLIT. Not even the minds at Aptos and Fairview Heights can overcome human frailties. 73, Kent K9ZTV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I'm considering modifying my software to support more than one PowerMate :-) It's rather handy to be able to change the *receive* frequency while transmitting, without disrupting the transmit frequency or the formation of Morse characters. Some radios severely hose CW if you fiddle with front panel controls while transmitting. The K3 is pretty good about this, but not yet perfect. W4NL noted that the TenTec 315 soft-rubber trim rings fit the K3 VFOA knob nicely. They also fit the PowerMate knob, although not quite as snugly; no comment on color choices. [Elecraft] K3 Mic up down buttons
Are the mic. up/down buttons supposed to work or not? The manual doesn't make sense. It tells how they are supposed to work and how to enable them in the menu but also says Mic function buttons not supported. Now is the Mic function button the same thing as a mic up/down button? Does not supported mean the same thing as won't work or does it mean might work but we don't support it or does it mean something entirely different. When I try to use them I get a N/A on the display so I assume they work but just don't work correctly and that's the way it's supposed to be. I know this is wordy but so is the manual. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mic up down buttons
Hi Steve, I just enabled in the CONFIG menu, and wired the mic according to schematics. Buttons between up/down line and grounding. Icom uses a resistor scheme for switching so the HM107B had a small rewiring inside. The reaction of up/down btw is not fast! So using an encoder on these lines will probably be kind of sluggish Better to do that by serial data. 73' Paul PD0PSB Really? How do you activate them? I tried grounding them and got the N/A.
