Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility

2023-07-29 Thread David Haines
I just installed the latest version of the KX3 Utility from Elecraft.
The only glitch was when Windows Defender tried to protect me from bad
people, but I knew Elecraft wasn't bad people, so overrode the warning.
All went well otherwise.

Any help appreciated.

The magic computer tech fixed it. Thanks for the help.
Unplugged the cable and turned all off then turned on and connected cable again
and it worked.

The utility is telling you that it is communicating with your KX3 at 38400
bits/sec. The KX3 has firmware revision 2.90.
This is not an error message. It appears to be working just fine.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Terminal window for CW

2020-01-03 Thread David Haines
Fred says "Optionally, you can use the KX3 Utility to monitor an
extended display of characters sent from the KX3's keyer."  I assume
"keyer" could refer to the paddle connected to the KX3.

I can type characters into the Utility Terminal lower window and
Transmit the CW.  The characters sent are displayed in the top window.

Ingo and all,

The characters entered with the keyboard will be perfectly formed,
If entered via paddles, bug ot hand key, they may not be perfectly
formed and may not be decoded properly.

This is a tool that can be used to practice your sending.

On the FTDI site there is a removal tool. Use it to wipe away com port drivers.
Then re-install the FTDI drivers for your KUSB or KXUSB cable.

allow the KX3 utility to see the com port, so no joy there.

BUT – it’s a weird BUT – If I connect the KXUSB directly to the laptop, open
the utility and connect, disconnect the KX3USB from the laptop and connect it
to the hub built in to the PK-232sc+, it works as long as I don’t exit the KX3
utility software. I can even close the serial port in the software, BUT as
long as I don’t exit the software, I can reopen the serial port and it works
fine. I can close the port and use other software that needs the KXUSB as long
as I don’t exit the KX3 utility program (just leave it minimized) it works when
I need it.

How crazy is that? Any gurus figure that one out??

On the FTDI site there is a removal tool. Use it to wipe away com port drivers.
Then re-install the FTDI drivers for your KUSB or KXUSB cable.

Good luck!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility problem: serial port is closed

2019-04-14 Thread HB
Okay…some weirdness, but I can get the software to work. Here is what I have
done (some help from you guys, some help from the IT guys where I work, and the
internet). It’s a little complex…

Configuration 1: My laptop is connected via USB to a PK-232SC+ which has a 2
port USB hub built in – my KXUSB is plugged in there. Under this
configuration, no joy with the KX3 Utility recognizing the COM port.

Configuration 2: My laptop is connected to the KX3 directly via USB port.
Under this configuration, no joy with the KX3 Utility recognizing the COM port.

Configuration 3: My laptop is connected to the KX3 directly via USB port.
Under COM port settings for the KX3USB connected port, I changed the latency
timer to 8 ms from 16 ms. Under this configuration, the KX3 Utility recognizes
the COM port every time.

Returning to configuration one with the lower latency timer setting does not
allow the KX3 utility to see the com port, so no joy there.

BUT – it’s a weird BUT – If I connect the KXUSB directly to the laptop, open
the utility and connect, disconnect the KX3USB from the laptop and connect it

Hi,
Sometimes driver software can be a pain...
Try this.
1) Open the device manager and select the comport by right clicking on it.
2) Check the box to delete the driver software and uninstall.
3) Unplug the USB cable.
4) Reboot
5) Next run the FTDI driver installation. When prompted or when complete, plug
the USB cable back in.
Sometimes, windows will keep reinstalling the same driver if the files have not
been deleted.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility problem: serial port is closed

2019-04-12 Thread rv6amark via Elecraft
Hank,I had a similar problem earlier this week following a Windows update.
The COM port showed up in Device Manager, but the software  package I was using
(not the KX3 Utility) couldn't talk to it.  Within a day or so, there was
another Windows  update,  and then everything worked fine.Sometimes it seems
like an update breaks something, and a follow on update fixes it.  Not the
first time I've seen that happen.Mark,KE6BB

Hank,

In that case, the next step is to download and install the latest copy
of KX3 Utility.

Hank,

Re-boot the computer - it seems all the problems are in your computer.
Oh, yes, power cycle the KX3 too, but that will not likely make a
difference.

After rebooting the computer, look in Device Manager to see which COM
port your computer assigned to the KXUSB adapter, and use that COM port
in all your applications as well as KX3 Utility.

Windows sometimes changes the COM port (in its infinite wisdom) for you.

I just had this problem today after "upgrading" to Windows 10 Ver 1809.
Windows told me the COM port was closed, even though it showed up in device
manager.
A reboot fixed it.

Hey folks…
I have an unusual (I think) problem. I have a KX3 that I have used the KX3
utility software with several times without issue. Today when I start the
software there is no COM port to select. In the bottom left hand part of the
KX3 PORT window is says Serial Port is Closed. (I’m using the Elecraft USB
cable for the KX3).

I can’t get it to work. I can control my Kx3 with DXLabs using the COM port no
problem. I can use the Elecraft Frequency editor with no problem. I can use
WinLink Express no problem. But when I start the KX3 utility software I can’t
select a COM port – there are none listed.

Here is my troubleshooting so far:
1. I know the COM port is there – it works for other software 2. I used the
FTDI driver removal tool and uninstalled the FTDI drivers 3. I uninstalled the
KX3 software 4. Reinstalled everything – but the issue remains

Any ideas?

Why 4800 baud?

I think it works better at 34.8.

And the KXUSB that I got with my KX3 was a FTDI based unit.

Unplug all USB devices except the one for the radio. See what Device Manager

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version

2018-06-13 Thread Dave B via Elecraft
Don't forget ...

    sudo apt install curl

on a command line, If you find it errors trying to get the firmware
updates from Elecraft.

Also, it's just:-

    file kx3util

on a command line, from within the directory where the "target" file
(kx3util) is, to find out it's details.

dave@G0WBX-Dell-System-XPS-L502X ~/Elecraft/kx3util_1_14_4_11 $ file kx3util
kx3util: ELF 32-bit LSB  executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV),
dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.0, stripped

(an older version of the utility.)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version

2018-06-13 Thread Dave B via Elecraft
Don't let a few idiots put you off Linux.

Look into the linux...@groups.io mailing list (the home of Fldigi etc)
Lots of GOOD help on there, by many who remember our initial frustration
with it all. (Some Elecraft users there too.)

As to one OS vs another. Linux is different, that is all.

Do any of you remember when you first started using Windows or Mac*?
I'll bet that was just as frustrating and confusing then, as if you
expect to "just jump in, and survive" with Linux (or BSD, or MacOS)
these days.

(* Has to be said, that back in the Steve Jobs days, the UI was truly a
work of art, you didn't need instructions. Since his sad demise, it's
all gone a bit Pete Tong.)

As others have said, it is possible to have a PC that will boot it's
original OS (Windows or Mac) or one or more versions of Linux (or any
other OS) so you can choose at boot time what you want.

Yes, there are several well known Ham Radio programs that have no
"Direct equivalent" Linux version, but there is other equaly good
software native to Linux that will do the same job. Mostly.

There are also some that have no equivalent, or even anything close
(sadly.) Some of them will run under WINE, some wont.

But, unless you use them all the time every day, you won't need them
most of the time. (Thinking here of Motorola DMR programming software
as an example.) In such cases, just boot into Windows, get that job
done, then if needed reboot back into Linux (or whatever) and carry on.

If you want to just get your toes wet, without risk of corrupting or
bricking your main PC, get another, or even a Raspberry Pi, to
experiment on. The Pi's are good, as the whole OS etc fits on one SD
card. If you mess it up, it's trivial to wipe and start over.

The latest Pi's are really good and powerful machines too, much more
than you'd expect from something of it's size, and at the price, can't
be beat.

Dont give up. Keep moving. Explore the pre-built packages first,
before trying to learn how to compile stuf from source.

But when ready, get onto the Fldigi wiki, and follow the build
instructions there, to build and install the latest Fldigi etc.
http://www.w1hkj.com/doku/doku.php?id=start

If needed, ask on linuxham.io for assistance, and it will be given.

73.

Dave G0WBX.

(KX3, TS870s, FT736r, Mostly Linux these days, but still use Windows at
work.)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version

2018-06-12 Thread George Pasek
Ok, here’s what was sent to me to get the 32 bit KX3UtilityLINUX_1_16_6_25.tgz
installed on Linux Mint ‘Sylvia’ Cinnamon Desktop edition 18.3 64-bit.
Now the KX3 Utility is running.
tnx to all that responded.
de George
WD0AKZ
dit – dit
---
Try these suggestions to get 32-bit running.

* Dependencies for use with Elecraft Linux-based Utilities

1) 32 bit vs 64 bit Distributions

The Elecraft Utilities for Linux are 32-bit and require installing 32-bit
compatiblity libraries on 64-bit distros that will allow 32-bit apps to run.

On Unbuntu 14 and later based distros:

sudo apt-get install libwebkitgtk-1.0.0:i386

sudo apt-get install libcanberra-gtk-module:i386

sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6:i386
libglib2.0-0:i386 libsoup2.4-1:i386 libgtk2.0-0:i386

2) cURL must be installed on your Linux distro for FTP

You will have to install cURL if it is not pre-installed. Most distros have it
pre-installed, but not all. It is easy to install from a terminal:

sudo apt-get install curl

3) Ensure your DialOut groups are set up properly

Most users, other than root and members of the dialout group, do not have
read/write permissions on the serial port device files. The Utilities cannot
access the serial ports if the user does not have r/w permissions. An easy way
to set the permissions is to add the user to the dialout group.

sudo adduser username dialout

4) All files and directories included in the gzipped tar file must be kept
together in the same location. The "Help directory", "Libs" directory (ie
k3util Libs), and executable binary (ie k3util) must all be located together in

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version

2018-06-12 Thread a45wg
KX3 Utils

I am running a totally basic Ubuntu Environment (64 bit).

I will get the KX3 Utils, extract and check the file type

mkdir /elecraft
chdir /elecraft
wget http://www.elecraft.com/software/KX3/KX3UtilityLINUX_1_16_6_25.tgz
tar -zxvf KX3UtilityLINUX_1_16_6_25.tgz
cd kx3util_1_16_6_25

Now to see what this file is

file file kx3util

I get the following output….

kx3util: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically
linked, interpreter /lib/ld-linux.so.2, for GNU/Linux 2.6.0, stripped

Ok - it is a 32bit Image… So it will not run.

Here’s how to fix it, by adding the i386 Package ability, and then adding some
needed libs

dpkg --add-architecture i386
apt-get update
apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6:i386

Now if I check the file kx3util I can see it has resolved the i386 links
(because I added the the i386 libs)

ldd kx3util
linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xf77d)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libdl.so.2 (0xf77c4000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0 (0xf77a7000)
libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6 (0xf763)
libm.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libm.so.6 (0xf75db000)
libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xf75be000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0xf7407000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xf77d1000)

Hope that is a slightly clearer instruction.

Should you want to automate this using Docker, this is the docker script for
this.

Re:   "if you don't understand the language, go away".

THANK YOU, DON!!!

I agree with your entire post.  I have actually asked for help in forums, and
the responders have made typos what they tell me to type, and then they brow
beat me because they made a mistake.  One of them actually said, "You should
have known what I meant to type!"  YIKES!  Not exactly a friendly community.

Every time I think about switching to Linux, it doesn't take me long to
reconsider.  Way too many hours are spent trying to make things work.  It just
isn't worth the trouble.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version

2018-06-11 Thread Don Wilhelm
If you are not good at deciphering cryptic messages with geek words,
don't use Linux.
I do wish it were better, but Linux seems to be steeped in "geekdom
language" - if you are not educated in the language, you do not deserve
to be part of our culture.
Until Linux produces plain text language for errors and such messages,
it will not be a major player in the computer operating systems.
Windows has its share of cryptic messages, but at least it is in plain
text and does not often refer to "gobbledygook" that is only understood
by Windows geeks.
I have tried Linux and have been stiffed by questions to the forums
saying essentially "if you don't understand the language, go away".
I am not a computer dummy - I understand DOS, but the Linux language is
a thing unto itself.
Ubuntu and Linux Mint have reduced the Linux install process difficulty,
but have not tackled the cryptic messages that can result.
If you only want to do only email and web surfing, then Linux can work
well for you, but anything else can be daunting with cryptic requests to
enter a nonsensical string of commands for "who knows what results" and
be shamed by the forum geeks who blame you for not understanding the
language.

George,

First check the app is 32 bit

 * ldd - will probably fail
 * ./exec - probably says No File
 * File info exec show it is i386 file

Add Arch support

  sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Followed by

   sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6Li386

You may need the odd extrac package but you should be on your way (I hope
with this)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version

2018-06-11 Thread Bill
This, sadly, is the downfall of Linux. Nothing is easy! Linux mainstream
versions such as Ubuntu and Mint are great systems - I run Mint dual
boot with Win 10 here. That said, I use the Win 10 side for everything
to do with my K-Line. I am spoiled, as are many others, by the ease of
installation/operation of the software I use on a regular basis.

Further, some software I use is not replaceable under Linux. There is
nothing up to the job available.

Wine is not the answer, as many Win programs will not properly run under
Wine/Linux - if at all. Recently, there is also a problem with Wine
itself - as being discussed on various Linux forums.

Personally, I would much prefer to run Linux 100% - for various reasons
(mainly security). That said, until Linux is made much more friendly to
the new user and the available software library drastically increases,
it will never be more than a very minor player at the user level. Linux
is, however, a major player in higher levels.

2018-06-11 Thread Chris Hallinan
If you open an terminal, change directory 'cd' to where the executable is,
and try to execute it manually by typing "./execname" (don't forget the dot
slash)

that will expose any error messages that are not displayed when you execute
through a file manager by clicking on the icon.

It's probably a library issue.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version

2018-06-11 Thread a45wg
George,

First check the app is 32 bit

  * ldd - will probably fail
  * ./exec - probably says No File
  * File info exec show it is i386 file

Add Arch support

   sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Followed by

sudo apt-get update
   sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6Li386

You may need the odd extrac package but you should be on your way (I hope with
this)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Segmentation Fault in Linux

2018-03-22 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Hi Knut,

Because it relates to problems using our utility software his posting is
certainly pertinent here. We have a lot of users who run our Utility s/w under
Linux and the solution to his problem will help others. Just because you are not
interested in a posting does not mean its inappropriate and does not interest
others on the list. (The delete key is a wonderful tool to quickly eliminate
those you do not wish to read..)

Also, your posting below used the word 'period' at the end is what I referred to
as rude and in essence orders them to take it elsewhere.

"Ths Linux gobbledygook has no place here, period."

It sounds like a parent disciplining a child. Neither a polite nor a respectful
statement to another discussion list member. The last thing we want to do is to
scare others away from asking questions or helping other on the list.

If you have concerns about a posting please feel free to contact the list
moderator and do -not- post them to the list. The moderator is the only list
participant allowed to make any decisions about the appropriateness of a posting
and to contact a poster or post on the list about them.

Whew! - I guess people have been spending way too little time on the air and way
too much time on the internet lately.. ;-)  I'm out of time on this topic - so
let's end the discussion for now.

This seems quite relevant. It literally has to do with getting
Elecraft-provided and supported software to function on an
Elecraft-supported computer operating system.

Given the software-driven nature of the Elecraft product line, you can
expect some discussion on software support issues on all of the various
computer operating systems supported by Elecraft.

If you do install this package, be sure to blacklist it from being

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Segmentation Fault in Linux

2018-03-13 Thread David Woolley
That is much more serious than a warning. I'd expect it to be
immediately followed by a crash with signal 3 (abort), rather than
signal 11 (segmentation fault). However, if this isn't the standard
assert routine, I would expect any attempt to actually use hash_table to
produce a segmentation fault.

The standard assert routine is a macro which tests the condition and, if
it fails, logs the fact then call abort, which never returns.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Segmentation Fault in Linux

2018-03-11 Thread Thomas Kluge
Hi Rob,

When I tried to start one of the utility programs today I got an error:

(k3util:2054): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_hash_table_insert_internal:
assertion 'hash_table != NULL' failed
I think this is just a warning but it was followed by a segfault...

All my Elecraft utility programs were affected (k3util, p3util,
kpautil).

I'm running Gentoo Linux which is up-to-date (most of the packets are
the stable versions) and I was not sure when it worked last time...
I've started to look a bit deeper into it and dmesg showed me first an
issue with the libexpat and then with libpng. I've downgraded both
packages to the following versions:
expat: from version 2.2.1 to 2.1.0-r4
libpng: from version 1.6.29 to 1.6.27

Now I still get the Glib-errors (warnings) in the console - but
everything works again. It might be the same problem the KX3util...

Best regards
Tom, DL3DTH

64-bit Linux requires 32-bit compatibility libraries.

If you do a search of the reflector archives you should be able to find a

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Segmentation Fault in Linux

2018-03-07 Thread Chuck Milam, N9KY
Whoa, a Linux question? Excellent.

Looks the HarfBuzz shared libraries got updated (probably along with your
window manager of choice) and the kx3util needs to be rebuilt (relinked?
Not certain of the proper dev-speak here) to reference the newer
libraries. (Sorry if I'm preaching to the choir.)

See if you can get the core file to drop (you may need to do a "ulimit -c
unlimited" to ensure you get one) and analyze it with gdb for more
information.

I wonder if you can do a workaround and keep the libharfbuzz library files
that kx3util is looking for installed (maybe in /usr/local or somewhere
else handy?)

I'd test this myself, but I confess I gave up tilting at the windmills
years ago and use Win 10 for ham radio applications. I do keep my Linux
boxes around for network and vulnerability management. Right tool for the
job, and all that.

Hi.

This sounds more like the USB<>KX3 cable driver firing up as a Serial
port that the updater was not defaulting to.That can happen if there
is something else already connected to the computer that provides a
"Serial" port for some other reason, before you plug in the KX3 cable.

I've never seen the KX3 utility run on an Apple box, but on Windows and
Linux, you get a chance to find and specify the serial port to use.

(Also just recently updated a KX3 to the latest releases with no issues,
using Linux Lite on an Acer One Netbook.)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility - "KX3 is not responding"

2017-03-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jeff,

Dropping the baud rate is not likely to solve the problem.
For the firmware download, KX3 Utility sets the KX3 baud rate to 38400
automatically.

I suspect you had a driver issue in your computer that was corrected by
the update.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility - "KX3 is not responding"

2017-03-12 Thread rich hurd WC3T
Jeff, if it's brand new, then I wouldn't fret about the baud rate. I
bought a used station (KX3/PX3/KXPA100) and discovered that the
communication baud rate with the amp in the station was 9600; and the baud
rate standalone was 38400. It took a couple macro commands from the
helpful folks here on the reflector to fix it but it sounds like your
problem, transient though it is, lies elsewhere.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility - "KX3 is not responding"

2017-03-12 Thread Jeff Hughes
Thanks, gentlemen.

Well, the good news is I got my KX3 updated with the latest MCU and DSP
firmware. In the ~10 minutes or so it took me to compose my message yesterday,
the (different) computer I had connected to the radio just sat there. I guess
it needed the rest… after sending off my plea for help, I turned back to it and
tried again. Success!

Since that computer (that successfully made the comm with my KX3) was the one I
updated to Apple’s latest OS (10.12 - Sierra), today I updated the OS on one of
the other Macs that had failed. Upon plugging in the KX3 and lighting up the
KX3 Utility, it immediately connected to it. I don’t recall seeing anything in
the Elecraft literature suggesting that 10.12 is required… but it definitely
seems to help. I’ve now talked to the KX3 with two different computers. How
reliable that connection might be, I suppose time will tell.

FYI, Rich… Aye, my KX3 is new, fresh from the mothership. If I encounter this
problem again I’ll try dropping the baud rate.

And, yeah, guys… MacLoggerDX has most definitely not been up while I was trying
to use KX3 Utility.

Thanks again!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 utility on RPi

2016-12-17 Thread Brendon Whateley
That is a great idea Niel. The platform is getting used so much for all
manner of things that used to need a "real computer" that it is a shame
that it is not a first-class device.

We can have a bunch of people "in-line" so that Elecraft doesn't run the
risk of the guy leaving. A couple of NDAs, a trip to the HQ, and they could
have a volunteer team to maintain the Pi version for the joy of all.

On the other hand, if one of us (well, not me - not technically qualified)
were to contact Elecraft and volunteer ( in the OpenSource mindset) to execute
the appropriate agreements for access to the code line. Then to be the
maintainer of the ARM distribution, with a focus on the RPi family, Elecraft
might well agree to support the distribution. That would satisfy the company
protection of product line integrity, and given a knowledgeable package
maintainer, a confidence in the finished product.

Precisely. Open source software has its place in situations where the
participants are technically qualified. However, I can't imagine
Elecraft tech support attempting to field the multitude of problems
reported from multiple platforms, coded by others, many who are anonymous.

I still don't understand the reference to "Elecraft controlling my
radio." The Elecraft utilities are convenient interfaces into all the
things I can configure with my Elecraft radios. The utility does
nothing unless I tell it to, and what I tell it is between me and my radios.

I'm a big Pi fan myself. So if adding my voice provides any additional
influence - here it is. I'm also a programmer and I agree there is
extra work involved. If the utility was open source, then volunteers
could join in and manage the tool chain and build. I would certainly be
happy to make a contribution.

The Raspberry Pi is a very hot platform that gets more and more capable
with each new board. Version 3 is quite amazing. I can hardly tell I'm
running on a little ARM box. It's power is the result of the advances
in mobile platforms, so the future for these little computers is very
bright.

James,

Having been a professional woodworker for 10 years I disagree. The
difference between a woodworker and a carpenter is 1/64 of an inch. 1/8
of an inch is sloppy measurement and while that is sufficient for
carpenters doing framing, it is not sufficient for finish carpenters and
woodworkers who do precision work.

The utility is compiled for the x86 architecture. You won't be able to
run it on the ARM architecture that the Pi runs on. The only way to do
that is for Elecraft to compile a version for the ARM. Last I seem to
recall being mentioned, there wasn't enough need to spend the time

2016-10-10 Thread Peter LaBissoniere
Slightly OT but I have a couple of issues after upgrading to Sierra that might
be interesting for Mac users. I now get garbage on transmit, on the USB
interface when connected to an Anker USB3 hub. Not an issue if connected
directly to the Mac Mini. Another issue is that the current settings now
sometimes change on my KAT500 when focus is changed from the KAT500 Utility to
another window or vice versa. I know because I hear relays activated in the
KAT500 as soon as I click on a different window. It doesn't re-tune but seems
to select a different memorized setting.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility

2016-06-07 Thread Dave B via Elecraft

All I did in the past, was to:-

Create a new folder for it from my home folder.

Extract the contents of the downloaded archive to that folder.

Create a desktop launcher pointing to the executable.

Install curl (and it's dependancies.) Needed to download firmware from
Elecraft's site.

$ sudo apt-get install curl

I was already a member of the "dialout" group, but you might need to
join that group

$ sudo adduser dialout (Of course, sudo will ask for
your password.)

Then log out, and log back in again.

After all that, it "just worked." Even with any of my generic
USB<>Serial leads and homebrew cable, or the Elecraft USB<>KX3 lead.

The above worked well on Lubuntu, and Mint. Both derivatives of Ubuntu.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility

2016-06-06 Thread Brian Waterworth
Tim's library install didn't work for me. Might be because I am on Ubuntu
16.04.

Do everything Tim suggested up until you have to install libraries. Then
try the following. This is what I used for Ubuntu 16.04, 14.04, and
12.04:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6:i386
libgtk2.0-0:i386

./kx3util

I just tried this on a new install of a 64bit Ubuntu 16.04 image and it
worked. The KX3Util started a little slowly the first time, but then after
that it was within a second or two.

If you have a px3, you don't need to reinstall the libraries, just follow
Tim's directions to download the PX3 tar file and repeat the steps minus
the library install. Then type:
./px3util

You can always go to the Elecraft site and download using your browser too.

Brian

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility

2016-06-06 Thread a45wg
In case anyone else is trying to do this - this general procedure should work.
I am starting off with a fairly basic Ubuntu 14 - 64 bit machine

General install for Ubuntu 14 - 64 bit

cd
mkdir kx3
cd kx3
wget http://www.elecraft.com/software/KX3/KX3UtilityLINUX_1_14_4_11.tgz
tar -zxvf KX3UtilityLINUX_1_14_4_11.tgz
cd kx3util_1_14_4_11

Add some 32 bit packages

sudo apt-get install  lib32z1, lib32stdc++6, install libgtk:386

And now it should work

./kx3util

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 utility Question

2015-03-08 Thread James Bennett
Hi Dick,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, not what I was hoping to hear. Maybe
that’s something that could be implemented in a future version. There are
probably a lot of folks who take their rigs out in the field and would like to
preserve their tuner’s home antenna settings.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 utility Question

2015-03-08 Thread Barry LaZar

Jim,
I wouldn't worry about it. Just push the tune button on the radio
and let the KX3 sort it out and remember. I do so many antenna things
around here and never depend on the memories. In fact I have a real
problem going from 28.3 MHz. to 28.6 Mhz. but the radio keeps up with
it. It takes just a moment for it to catch up, but it does.

Sorry, no. The KX3 Utility saves only what is lost in a Parameter
Initialization (EEINT). I didn't list ATU memories in the "what is not saved",

It saves everything that is affected by Parameter Initialization (EEINIT).

See KX3 Utility Help, Tab Pages, Configuration, "What is saved" and "what is
not saved".

What configuration parameters does the KX3 Utility save Does it save the
KXFL3 configuration numbers, also, does it save the temperature compensation
data?
