RE: Exchange 2000 DR
I think you should plan on having a clone root domain controller. You could use VMWare or Microsoft Virtual Server and run it on the same box, though. RE: Exchange 2000 permissions error
Has something changed on the network? For example, something that would make domain controllers, expecially GCs invisible to the clients (like port 389 or port 3268 closure)? My thinking is that they can't correctly authenticate, or Outlook can't confirm that the user is a valid user because it can't see the Global Address List. Or maybe someone closed port 135 somewhere? A) Exchange 2000 doesn't have a service account. RE: Exchange 2000 SMTP Connector
I don't think SMTP Connector is that necessary unless you want a tighter control over mail routing and flow. RE: Exchange 2000 SMTP Connector
No, it is not necessary. I do not have a connector (ok, actually I do, but it is ONLY routing mail to for a specific domain). All my normal e-mail flows out through the SMTP VS. What you have to realize is that SMTP connector properties override the Default SMTP VS properties. So, if your SMTP VS relay settings are wrong and allow relaying, if your SMTP Connector is not allowing relaying, it will not be allowed. If you can detail what your Relay settings are on both your SMTP VS and the Connector, or even better, detail what your friend's settings are, we can probably help with where the problem is. RE: Exchange 2000 and DS tolpology query
Unfortunately, I don't have a massive lab in which I can test this, but the last time I looked at it, losing the configuration DC wasn't serious; it switched over rather painlessly. However, when you lose all DCs in the site, it can indeed take 15 minutes or so before Exchange will query AD and redirect its scope to all DCs in the domain. During that 15 minutes, nothing much happens. RE: Exchange 2000 Routing
Well, I don't necessarily disagree--65 is a lot more than 4. The routing should match your network. If all 65 offices go into the cloud, each could have 64 connectors. But it really only makes sense to have a couple of them to hub offices, especially since the bulk of the mail will end up going to those offices or the Internet anyway. If you have a true cloud and no backup links, then I would think that you'd make one site link for all the sites connected to the cloud. As to Exchange routing group connectors, I would set up standard routing group connectors (not SMTP Connectors) between the sites according to predominant mail flow. If you can get them to just connect once "on-line" after the move everything works out. An issue if you've got a lot of remote users. RE: Exchange 2000 Server Replacement
Hello, Some of the things I've encountered with the faq move, and received no help from the faq or list :-): -Some Public Folders not fully syncing. I THINK this was because of Trend Scanmail mucking things up. To resolve things I turned off PF Scanning on both source and target , and then dropped a message in every damn PF (source side) that wasn't synced up. You should allow a couple days for the initial sync. I waited over a week, etc... But, things synced up in a couple hours after dropping in messages. In ESM, Server, Store, PF, you can export the PF item count and bring into Excel. -Some mailboxes won't move. Less than 1%. Corrupt messages usually. ISINTEG doesn't fix things. Track down the messages and delete (get creative in how to delete: OWA, IMAP, Virus scanning turned off,...). -A lot of configuration to copy over (store limits, Maintenance times, SMTP, OWA, Monitors, Backups,...) -Blackberry users have been an annoyance. I've just started testing with those users. Not much written up, guess it's just suppose to work. Would be nice if they'd pay for maintenance! Rights at the Sever level for the Blackberry Admin account are very different between the new and old server... The faq, and it's links, covered the rest that I can recall. A DR server move would've been easier and quicker, but we've been doing that since Exchange 3.0, and we were just looking to leave some of the cruft behind. Nah, you won't need to point the clients. MAPI is smart Exchange should be able to find their mailboxes when you move them. RE: Exchange 2000/2003 coexistence
Your plan is fine. I did the same thing here. I built an Exchange 2003 server using the eval media, then moved all the executives mailboxes to it. That way they can get used to using the new OWA and RPC over HTTP. I'm hedging my bet that when the evaluation expires, there's no way they'll want to go back to Exchange 2000, so they'll approve the purchase of Exchange 2003. RE: Exchange 2000 high availability...
When you say "routed", do you mean physically routed, as in SMTP-routed? Or do you mean that you want user to hit OWA on the front-end server and get connected to his/her mailbox on the appropriate back-end server? If latter, then yes, this functionality is already built into the front-end/back-end design out of the box. Now, about server crashing... well a user's mailbox can only reside on one back-end server at any given time. So if that server crashes, that's it, the user won't see his/her mailbox until that server is up again. Way back there used to be a cluster product called Vinca CoStandby server that was supposed to work over long distance. It wasn't always as good as advertised. I am not sure if it is still around. Legato owns it now. Also there is GeoCluster... never tried it. And then Marathon. Again never tried it. Marathon used to allow a demo download. But now they must be paranoid or something because they only offer their product as a service. I.e. their engineers come out and set it up. Re: Exchange 2000 Firewall Ports
Hi, if you want to open ports for your users to be able to send mail you have to open the following ports: SMTP (inbound/outbound mail): 25 (optional POP3 / IMAP4) pop3: 110 (insecure, password sniffer possible) or use 995 if you prefer to use ssl Imap4: 143 (insecure) of use 993 foor imap4 ssl OWA uses port 80 (inbound) This is again insecure if you use basic authentication. Try using a SSL website (port 443). You don't have to open any rpc ports, these ports are only needed if you use a front/back end config. Hope this helps. RE: Exchange 2000 Firewall Ports
TCP 25 - inbound SMTP mail delivery TCP 443 - inbound HTTPS for OWA TCP/UDP 53 - if you host your own DNS If you want Outlook, use a VPN. The PIX will do IPSEC based VPNs and you can use the Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 IAS (RADIUS) service to authenticate against the AD. Or you can just do PPTP VPNs to the RRAS service on Windows 2000. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Justin Lape Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2003 9:51 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exchange 2000 Firewall Ports Windows 2000 Server Exchange 2000 Server I recently got a Cisco PIX and I need to know what ports are absolutely necessary to allow inbound traffic through the firewall for people to be able to send mail in, access OWA, etc. I am reading that port 135 needs to be allowed inbound but due to all the hype with RPC these days I was wondering if the port was necessary. RE: Exchange 2000 Firewall Ports
Setup a VPN with the PIX. There is no reason to waste all the money on one if you are just going to turn it into swiss cheese to access Exchange. Yes, RDP is necessary if you are trying to allow users to use Outlook at home, but since a large number of consumer ISP's block it since MSBlast, it's a waste of time. As for other ports, SMPT: 25 OWA: 80 or 443 The rest should be firewalled. -Original Message- From: Justin Lape [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2003 7:51 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exchange 2000 Firewall Ports Windows 2000 Server Exchange 2000 Server I recently got a Cisco PIX and I need to know what ports are absolutely necessary to allow inbound traffic through the firewall for people to be able to send mail in, access OWA, etc. I am reading that port 135 needs to be allowed inbound but due to all the hype with RPC these days I was wondering if the port was necessary. Not so of course but I have to logically put it back in their court. I am trying to come up with reasoning or something they will accept. Thanks for the reply. Wow. I like this forum because it is an information cornucopia. And I also liked it because I felt it was a step above the usual "I a bigger geek than you" flame wars that kick up all over the net. I am hoping that in the long run, we can avoid sophomoric commentary. I agree that one should look in books and research issues online, but at the same time, It is dificult wearing many hats. I guess what I am saying is this. Instead of throwing our inflammitory remarks, Just shake your head and ignore the post. People won't question your emotional intellect that way. RE: Exchange 2000 Standard Limit
It's 16 gig. If you have hit that limit, you can contact PSS and they can send you an updated version of the store.exe that will temporarily extend the size to 17 gig. You then need to have users delete email, let online maintenance run and then defrag the database. Also, make sure your deleted item retention is turned off during this process or the stuff they delete will not disappear immediately. RE: Exchange 2000 Standard Limit
It is 16gb, and once you have reached the limit, you have 2 options. 1) run eseutil to perform an offline defrag of the database, removing any whitespace - cross your fingers and hope that you have enough whitespace to get below the limit. Requires roughly 1 1/2 times the size of the database to perform. If you choose this option, get the eseutil whitepaper. 2) upgrade to Exchange 2000 Enterprise. (best option). It is more expensive, yes. But you can peform the install right over the top of standard, and the store will start right up afterwards. Hey all, First off.. thanks for the help with the ADC issue I was having earlier this week. Using the SP3 ADC worked, also running the install as the same named-account as what Exchange 5.5 service acct. provided the appropriate work around. Now that I have gotten my ADC installed, a Recipient Connection Agreement, the ForestPrep and DomainPrep done I have run into issue with the E2K Server install. As the E2k server installed it eventually brought up an error indicating that a Exchange 2000 setup failed while installing a sub-component. The Site Replication Service which threw an error code of 0x0070534 . I apologize for not having the exact error in full detail, but that is as close as my scumming notes tell me. Anyhow, I am presented with Retry or Cancel.. I attempted Retry, but after retrieving the same reponsed 2 or 3 times, I hit cancel where the setup appeared to continue through and finished. Upon completion however, obviously the SRS doesn't operate I presume, but also the Information Store, the and the MTA (which is linked to the SRS) fail to start. I have gone through the Exchange 2000 Installation Log and found that the error code of 0x0070534 has an error as such in full: Error code 0XC0070534 (1332): No mapping between account names and security IDs was done. Now I ran the E2k install as an account named identical to the Exchange 5.5 Service Account (E5.5 exists in an NT4 member domain) .. i.e. E55 svc acct called Exchange-Admin in the XYZ NT4 domain is mimiced as Exchange-Admin in the ABC domain . Both accounts have identical passwords. The NT4 domain, XYZ, Trusts the Active Directory Domain, ABC through a 1 way trust. First off, is a 2-way trust required for this upgrade (via swing method). Second, Does anyone have some insight on this error, possibly created by the Exchange 5.5 existing in a separate domain than the E2k that I am trying to join to the E55 Org. Third, I have seen MS articles indicating that installation for a co-existence between E55 and E2k should have a 2-way RAC in the ADC. (for my needs, a 2-way RAC isn't necessary as we are moving everything away from E55 to E2K and we don't need anything the AD has to be replicated back to E55.) I have several other errors in my Event Logs revolving around the Exchange System Attendant, Service Control Manager, and the MSExchangeFBPublish .. however I believe these all are side-effects of the failed SRS. The last thing I tried before leaving the office on Friday was un-installing E2K from the server, but this uninstall appeared to have failed. I was about ready to re-install the server from the ground up since I have already gotten an ADC with my E55 and the Forest/Domain Prep done. RE: Exchange 2000 invalid characters
"+" is a perfectly valid SMTP character as defined by the specification in RFC2821 of "atext" as the fundamental atom of the local part of the address and then definition of atext in RFC2822 (3.2.4) as containing: ALPHA / DIGIT / "!" / "#" / "$" / "%" / "&" / "'" / "*" / "+" / "-" / "/" / "=" / "?" / "^" / "_" / "`" / "{" / "|" / "}" / "~" The "+" character in some mailers indicates a special function, but only during local delivery, not routing. You can have the alias a different name. But I was able to rename a distribution group with a + sign and can email it internally. So, it is possible. Just not proper form. RE: Exchange 2000 default signature for all email mailboxes
You would use an SMTP Transport Event Sink Here are a couple of articles to point you to: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=317680 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;317327 Head to MSDN and check out the SMTP transport event sink stuff and go to the Exchange section and get the last SDK. http://snurl.com/1o88 The next SDK is due out any day now, and it may have a better example for you to follow, but still the March one is pretty good. The third party applications are not overly priced. www.exclaimer.com www.disclaimit.com Www.gfi.com That last one has a trial version of their full product, after which, I believe, the disclaimer component is free and continues to function. Almost like a reward for giving them a try. Or finally, deploy a corporate signature for everyone to use in Outlook. You can add a disclaimer/default signature with a lot of the Anti-virus products that are available. I use Trendmicro's IMSS. Other alternative is to add an SMTP event sync. Search the Microsoft KB for the article. RE: Exchange 2000 & Domino R5
Notes Connector. It's easy, robust, does dirsync, and will simplify your migration unless you were going for a big bang. We route SMTP into Exchange and then Exchange moves it into Notes if the target address is a Notes recipient. Works well and I can see some parts of the organisation being on Notes for ever. Paid for it, happy with it, supports lots of their business processes. -Original Message- From: Ronk [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 23 June 2003 21:42 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exchange 2000 & Domino R5 All I bringing up a new Exchange 2k server to replace my Notes server but am having a issue with my boss. RE: Exchange 2000 & Domino R5
I had a customer who had Lotus Notes in-house and we hosted Exchange 2000 for them. They had 150 users on Exchange and a bunch more on LN. They also had an NT Mail server in-house (Gordano NT Mail). MX records were pointing to NT Mail server. NT Mail server had a routing table which defined the Exchange users, if a message came to an Exchange user - it was relayed to our Exchange environment. Otherwise it was given to LN. On Exchange side, we had a recipient policy for their domain name with the option UNselected "this Exchange organization is responsible for all mail delivery to this address". And we had an SMTP connector with their domain name in the Address Space and it pointed to their NT Mail server. The way all this worked - if Exchange finds an SMTP address locally, it keeps the message. If it does not - it shoots it to NT Mail. I think we also defined that NTMail server as a smart host in the properties of the Default SMTP Virtual Server. There was no GAL synchronization. They just sent mail to each other by typing their SMTP addresses. I guess for more $$$ we could have put together some kind of dir synch. -Original Message- From: Ronk [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 23, 2003 5:42 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exchange 2000 & Domino R5 All I bringing up a new Exchange 2k server to replace my Notes server but am having a issue with my boss.
