I used the removing tools from

useful.  You may need to run the

Fllowed the instructions in the URL

What
my site do is put a brackets at the display name ( ).  Inside the bracket

Ever come across a user case that the Outlook profile is corrupted,

the total no of items still remains. Creating a new Outlook profile

Dumpster items aren't moved when the mailbox is moved but I don't know if
that accounts for the difference in the number of items.

Subject: Moving Mailboxes between 5.5 servers

We are upgrading the hardware on our Exchange server, and will probably go
the route of two Exchange servers online in the same site, move mailboxes
one workgroup at a time and then take the old server offline. In my
testing, however, I have run across something puzzling, which I cannot seem
to run down in Technet or on the MS website. (Perhaps I'm just not asking
the right question).

When I move a mailbox from one server to another, and then compare the
resources, I get some pretty startling differences in numbers (although not
in mailbox size) - yet, I cannot seem to find anything actually missing...

For example:

OLD SERVER:
Total K: 36,380
Total No. of Items: 3,254
Total No. of Associated Items: 73

NEW SERVER:
Total K: 36,280
Total No. of Items: 571
Total No. of Associated Items: 21

What am I losing? I can't seem to find anything obvious? Does anyone know,
or can you point me in the right direction to figure it out?

Thanks,
Mary Elizabeth

Comparison of Scanmail 3.7 and Antigen

2001-11-26 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Hi,

We have been using for Scanmail for past couple of years.
Recently we are calling in Antigen - who just setup an
office here in Singapore, for a demo. The tech guy informed
us that Scanmail is adopting the same technology as Antigen,
making use of ESE in their ver 3.7.

We have just upgrade Scanmail to 3.7 but unable to install
Antigen due to some missing registry keys. Just wonder
anyone out there has compare both Scanmail 3.7 with Antigen 6.0 or 6.2.
This should be a fair comparisions since both use the same technology
now.

Size of Personal Folders

Thanks

Just a
simple question I will not mind if I do not get an answer.

Anybody knows how big can a personal folder grow?

The
reason I asked is my users are growing and I am running out of disk space.
We are due

the
personal folder cannot be too large.  In fact anything above 1 G is not

Definitely Microsoft must have a design spec, say .edb file in Ex 5.5

.pst

At the

Jack,

The
server cannot add anymore harddisk.  Using 2 Compaq Proliant 6500 runs
as clustered with one disk disk array.
The
disk array has 6 18.2G disks, two are raid 0, for the transaction logs. Four are
raid-5 (1 of them is redundant disk).
It
turn up the firmware on the raid controller card is quite
old.
If I
add one more disk to the disk array I need to redo the raid 5 again,

which
is quite a hassle.

Anyway
it is the same old story, users do not want to keep old
mails.
Have double the quota twice, from 10 M to 20
then to 40 M.  After 6 months they come back and ask
for
more.  We have installed the Mailbox Manager and will purge anything
that is more than 1 yr old.

continue to take advantage of Single Instance Storage (SIS) in Exchange. That

Hi,

Struggle with the same thing before. It turn up
there are some regitry keys need to verify first before
the settings in "Routings" in IMS will work correctly.
Do not know whether it is Microsoft fault or not,
after all like Williams say it may be the Administrator's
fault i.e. my fault. I may have change something before.

The key to verify get from some text books, (only for Exchange 5.5)
RelayFlags, RelayDenyLists, RelayAllowLists.

Team,

I am trying to find out how someone managed to use my
Exchange server as a relay for sending spam. I am
running Exchange 5.5 with service pack 4.0 . The only
thing this Exchange server does is act as a relay
point for an application. This server sits behind a
firewall. I looked at the firewall ACL and found that
the external IP address had SMTP traffic open to the
world. That answers the questions as to how they
managed to get SMTP access to the server. I have since
blocked this ACL.

What I don't understand is how MS Exchange Server 5.5
allowed the traffic to pass through? I specified by
host IP in Exchange what servers where allowed to
relay mail. How did someone manage to use my Exchange
server to spam without being on the list of allowed
servers? I noticed that 10,000 e-mails were stuck in
the que and I could not delete them. I uninstalled the
"Internet Mail" connector and re-installed, but the
backed up messages were still there? What directory
are these messages stored so I can delete them from
Windows Explorer? Any information provided is greatly
appreciated.

Thanks...JS

Some doubts abt Scanmail file blocking

2001-12-15 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Hi,

I am in the process
of evaluating Antigen and comparing with Scanmail which
is already install
in house.  I have read with much interest on all discussions
of
both products on
this list.  There is some discussions on the way both
products
block exe attachment
and wish to seek the experts thoughts abt this.

I have some doubts
on the file blocking of Scanmail.  For Antigen it is
definitely
blocked by checking
the file header of the attachments.  So it knows the
file
type even if users
rename the extension say exe to txt.  Scanmail will let
the attachment
through if the extension is rename even the file type is
configured
to be blocked.
That is the reason why for Antigen it will remove exe within a
zip
file while Scanmail
will ignore if it is zipped.

Just checking with
you guys any thoughts on which one of this method will cause
problem, say in the
event there is an outbreak and the latest pattern is not
available yet?
For me looks like Scanmail will not be so safe.

Migrating to Active Directory before Exchange 2000

2001-12-28 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Hi,

Need some help on this one. I am still in the process of research on this.
Existing setup NT 4.0 SP6a, Exchange 5.5 SP4.

We are in the process of upgrading. Because of budgeting it is plan in two
phases. Come Jan 2002 we will migrate to win2k first then on mid 2002 then
upgrade to Exchange 2000.

Question is anything to lookup for? Saw somewhere when setting up Active
Directory I should not used the one in win2k CD and must used the one in
Exchange 2000 CD. Someone actually mentioned must used some files in
SP 2 that is just released. There is some sort of stamping. The Active
Directory Connector that is going to install should come from SP 2?

Another question is the win2k DNS. We are still using the Unix DNS with
WINS
running. Since Active Directory must worked with a DNS we intend to migrate

the Unix DNS to win2k DNS. Question is can I just port over the zone file
in Unix DNS to win2k DNS just like that? Or is there any things that I must
look out for?

This list has been great through out the 2+ yrs that help me administrating
Exchange 5.5. Appreciate all the guides from the experts on this list.

Thought the Exmerge utility is used for this purpose?

I am no expert and you may have to wait for them to

Subject: moving mailboxes and having problems

Good afternoon,

Exchange 5.5 sp4 and Outlook 98.

When moving mailboxes from one container to another is it true that a
person's profile has to be refreshed by doing a check name after keying in
the mailbox name?

I have been testing this and find that it is true. We have 1638 mailboxes
to move from one container to another.

We are doing the following: back up the mailbox to a PST, delete the
mailbox, add the mailbox to the correct container, restore the mailbox from
the PST. Then when trying to sign in we get unable to open default folders.
I thought it might be a timing (synching problem) so I wanted 20 hours and
still get the same error.

Please let me know if you know of an easier way to move these mailboxes. (I
know Kevin Snook company has mailbox mover but that is one at a time also
and we really haven't got that to work either.)

Happy holidays.

Regards,

Mike Mitchell

RE: Sending Issue.

2002-01-09 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Hi,

Saw this discussed a few times now for the past week.
Just check on one thing which happenned to my site.

Do both of your Exchange has any Site Connectors or
X400 Connectors? Ours has a site connector,
then what happens is a small percentage of smtp mails actually goes
through the site connector to another site through
a fibre link. The administrator on the other site
report to me that some of our mails actually delivered
by their IMS.

At the end we have to set the IMS at a lower cost
compare to the cost for the site connector. This
will force all mails go through the IMS instead of
going through the site connector.

Just highlight a point hope that helps. May be your
mails go through the site connector.

1. How to configure whatever e-mail send out by User_A will received by
User_B without using CC ?

2. How to configure to blocking user sending e-mail out from company but
still can sending within company. Wayne Hanks was told me by adding their
name to the list in the Internet Mail Service connector under Delivery
restrictions tab. Add their name to the "reject message from" list and
they shouldn't be able to send anything out. I had try, but user still can
sending e-mail out.

For your all infor, I'm using Exchange 5.5 SP3.

RE: Exchange 5.5 Directory hierarchy

2002-01-09 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

You going to have problem in future when migrating to
Exchange 2000. We have two sites here under one Exchange
Org. The other site managed by another comp centre used
nested containers and when migrating to Exchange 2000 hit
problems. My counterparts there has to use Exmerge to move
mailboxes by pst files. We are due to migrate to Exchange 2000
at mid yr. So far the advise from my counterparts is put
everything under one single container until moving to
Exchange 2000.

Hi,
For a huge organization, how are the recipient
containers nodes in an Exchange directory organized?
>From an Exchange Administrator point of view, what
should be the criteria for distributing recipient
entries amongst various container nodes.
Also, how about container nodes within container nodes.
What should be the depth of the tree?
e.g. could I have:
o=company
|_ou=Site1,o=company
  |_cn=Container1,ou=Site1,o=company
|_cn=Container2,cn=Container1,ou=Site1,o=company
  |_ cn=Container3,.. and so on..

These questions are aimed at understanding the

1st phase of upgrading from 5.5 to 2k

2002-01-10 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

I post something
similar before.  Hope to check with the experts to
clarify
on some finer
points.

Exchange 5.5
migrating to Exchange 2000.  We are in the first phase of
migartion.

We are purchasing
two server to be installed as win2k Domain Controllers.
These two DCs will
install the DNS, Global Catalog, and Active Directory.
Migrating to
Exchange 2000 will be on second phase.

Questions:
1.  More that
one Exchange 2000 reference books tells me I must install
with
the Active Directory
from Exchange 2000 CD and not the one on win2k CD.
Question is what is
the difference between these two?

2.  I
understand once the AD is up, I need to install the Acitve Directory
Connector
in Exchange 5.5 to
sync the directory information in Exchange with the AD.
Just curious what
happen immediately after the AD Connector is up.
Is all the users
X.500 directories in the Information Store export out and write
into
the AD?  Also
in future if I modify something in the user's mailbox does it mean
it
will automatically
update to the AD?  Vice-versa if I modify the AD will it
get
reflect on Exchange
5.5 mailboxes?

Thanks for any
help

Any risk on allowing users to directly authenticate with IMS

2002-01-10 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Hi,

Need some advise on
this.
Platform NT4.0 SP
6a, Exchange 5.5.SP4.

We have some Mac
users in the campus.  One lecturer installed with
the new email client
from Microsoft called Entourage.  We have
configured the
application to download mails with no problem.
But sending out of
email has a problem.  Because our IMS is
set to no relay, the
IMS will not send mails submitted by this
application.

For Entourage to
send out mails I have to enable
by checking "Hosts and Clients that successfully
authenticated".
After enabled this
Entourage can send mails out.

I have some concern
on this.  Basically this settings bypass
the no relaying
feature in IMS.  Any users can configured any
email clients on any
platform point to the IMS, supplying their
username and
password and they will be allowed to sending
mails out to
internet.

Any suggestions
should I allow this?

Thanks

RE: SMTP

2002-01-11 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Hi,

Coincidence, just have a meeting with the iPlanets people here
in Singapore. Discussed something similar; we are university
campus here also.
They can customize the iPlanet Mail Server to work with any LDAP
server as long as the LDAP server is compliant with the LDAP protocol.
They believe they can work with OID - Oracle Internet Directory server.
They have some reservation with Active Directory as the AD apart from
LDAP has extra attributes that Microsoft build in.

The server is properly designed with the logs on its own
partition. Just at the moment when the Information Store
stops and the event viewer says the drive where transaction
logs sits are full, a few of us just stop thinking.
Rushing through the Technet article and one article suggest
this and we just go ahead.

After this when the second time happens we just proceed as
usual without suspecting anything. Never come across the
article mentioned by Marty Richards.

In this line everyday is a learning. Even something you\

would ponder a guess you did loose info and didn't know it, how would
you know anyway! If a few users lost a couple of emails, it might not
even hit your desk. A scary procedure, if the server was properly
designed, the logs are on an ntfs partition, so I would never even
attempt such a thing!

Just my thoughts..

Suspect these mails are generated by the postmaster

Someone external sent a mail with a "dummy domain" in the from

Postmaster return a NDR to the sender but unable to deliver to the
"dummy domain".  It will stuck in the queue for 72 hrs, retry
every
4 hrs
or so.  After the timeout period expired Postmaster will remove the mails
from the queue.
I just

Yes, see it quite often. Most of the time due to dns problem.
Just check on earthlink.net by doing a q=soa, they just update
their dns record - serial 2001103000. Looks like they just modify
the dns.

Stupid question. someone has implemented a restriction on the maximum
size of message that can be delivered internally within our Exchange 5.5 SP3
environment.

I now have a user who is trying to send an attachment that takes him over
that limit - it's to internal and external recipients - so a file share
won't work... ;-)

Can someone give me a clue where I should be looking??

RE: SMTP Problem

2002-02-26 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Hi,

I may be wrong, if so just point it out to me, I don't mind.

Saw something similar at my site, may not be the same thing as
happen to yr site. Over here the IMS and Exchange are on separate
box. So for the Mac client over here I have to point the "Incoming
mail(pop3)"
to the Exchange server and the "Outgoing mail(smtp)" to the IMS server,
otherwise the Mac client cannot send mail. Test it out on a win2k client
using Outlook Express comfirm this setting.

For this case may be (just may be, I am not sure) the "Incoming mail(pop3)"
should points to the Exchange box and the "Outgoing mail(smtp)" point
to the Mail Essentials box since it is the gateway?

I am not sure of Mail Essential, have not used it myself.
We are using Exchange 5.5 SP 4 on NT 4/SP6a.

Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT SP6a. Mail Essentials on a seperate box as a gateway
to Exchange server.

I'm having trouble with users in remote offices relaying mail through our
Exchange server. The users are not connected through leased lines. They
share an internet connection with local technical colleges(local to them,
not me). I've set the Mail Essentials box and the Exchange box to allow
relaying only to clients that authenticate. I've tested both boxes with with
two of those wonderful blackhole sites, and they passed.

The remote clients can pop their mail, but cannot send mail even though
they've set the client software(Outlook Express)to authenticate.

Also, I had the same problem with some Macs, but only here at the main site.
The authentication check box in the client fixed those.

What am I forgetting? I'm sure it will be something simple, but I'm stumped.

Exchange mounting problem on cluster server

2002-02-27 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Hi,

Appreciate any
guidance from the experts in this list.

Setup Exchange 5.5
SP4 on NT 4.0 SP6a.  Have an
Exchange Enterprise
runs on two clustered servers with
abt 800 mailboxes,
last check the Private store
slightly more than
16 G and Public store 29 G.
IMS and OWA are on
separate boxes.
Exchange has been
running for > 4 yrs.

For every one to two
months I reboot the clustered servers
once users start to
experience slowness in their Outlook
clients.  Most
of the time things are okay.  Yesterday when
I do a reboot most
of the resources mounted okay except the
Information Store
Resource.  Strange thing is that, the information
store take too long
to mount on the active server, then the
passive server
actually take over the cluster resources and
everything mounted
okay including the IS.

Is this normal or is
there some problem with the IS?
Since yesterday
until now everything seems to be okay.

Thanks for any
help.

Try out similar thing as what you did in 5.5.
In this case can bypass DNS. Check Q190710.
The article mentioned two places to configure,
the Routing tab and Connections tab. Somehow
for my case I need to configure both before
it works. For both setting I used IP address
instead of the hostname.

Subject: Re-routing mail for certain domains?

Just a silly one here really. Currently using a quiet period in work to
have a mess about with Exchange 2000. Our internet server fires all
incoming SMTP mail to our Exchange 5.5 server. We have a couple of
redundant domain names which I wanted to use for testing purposes so how
can I route SMTP mail for just those domains from our Ex 5.5 box to my
test Ex 2000 box?

I thought this would be done through the re-route options on the IMS but I
can't seem to get it to work.

If for example I select mail coming into abc.com to be rerouted to
test.com all the Ex 5.5 box seems to do is strip abc.com from the e-mail
address and replace with test.com and then obviously not find the
recipient. The mails are never reaching my Ex 2000 box.

I think this is obviously down to my lack of understanding of how SMTP and
DNS work but any little pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, James.

RE: Internet Mail Service--Stopped

2002-03-06 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Should not be Antigen, we used Scanmail and sometime
IMS also shutdown by itself also. At first we used
Scanmail 3.51 which used AVAPI, and this happened.
Afterwards upgrade to 3.7 which follows Antigen uses
ESE. Thought this may help IMS since the Virus engine
scan the virus in the Database Engine level, still IMS
will shutdown by itself occassionally.

For me I suspect that some corrupted mails causing this
on my site, may not be your case. Overhere there are
some web services which make use of java mail servlet,
basically the developers tried to compose their own mails
complete with MIME attachments. Suspect some of the mails
composed by these applications has the wrong format which
IMS does not recognized and cause it to halt. I have asked
the developers to relook into their servlets.

Greetings All,

Sometime yesterday the Internet Mail Service on my Exchange Server--NT4.0
SPa, MSExchange 5.5--SP4 shut itself off. I discovered this overnight and
when I went to restart the service--thank God it did restart. Antigen is
the mailserver antivirus we use. So, I am throwing this out to you for
any comments, specifically has anyone on this list experienced a "self
shutdown" by Exchange. My only thought that somehow the Antigen software
shutdown the server to fend off some virus attack.

Going

Is
there any tools available for me to do this?  Otherwise the option left is
for me to look for a Mac,
install Outlook in Mac, export out to Mac format then send to him
again.  In Singapore here we
hardly
used any Mac and I do not have one within the comp centre

  Exchange5.5:
Create a custom recipient with his New Zealand

  Go
to his mailbox properties, Delivery Options, and select the custom recipient
  as an alternate recipient.
  Hide
  both from the GAL.

  Exchange2000:
  Replace 'custom recipient' with 'mail-enabled

  Go

Thanks, the administrator has used some file format conversion utility
and can't do the thing.
They
have the pst file.  We have OWA, but I have disable his NT account.
May be I will enable
his NT
account again and ask him to use OWA for one month then remove his
account.

Thanks

  It
must have been a good relationship for you to go through so much
  effort.

  You
could enable POP or IMAP access and tell him to get his own email.

Otherwise, I'd send him the .pst and let him deal

Since you have these e-mails in a .pst file, I
think you can create a rule which would forward the message to his new
e-mail address. Although  normally rules would run when the messages
arrive, you can use them in the inbox (RUN NOW).

The challage would be to create a rule which
would cause each and every e-mail to be forwarded. Well, it may not be
possible to create a rule to include all, but maybe you can create more
than a few. For example, if you  create a rule which includes
"SENT TO", you may clear most of the messages. Looking at the messages you
may come up with some 'creative' rules :)

  I am

mailboxes with items in them, but when I try to retrieve the mail in those
mailboxes (either through OWA or standard POP), the mailboxes appear to be

but when I try to read the mail from that mailbox, it shows as
  empty.

  What
is happening here?  Is there any way (as the administrator) to examine

Hi all. I have a quick question about Exchange & sendmail
We are in the middle of migrating from sendmail to Exchange 2k. I have
Norton running on the Exchange server which is working fine. My problem is
that I don't have all users on Exchange yet & probably will not until
Sept.We are constantly receiving viruses because the sendmail server isn't
running any anti virus but it is acting as our front end server for the
Exchange Clients. Is there a way that I can have the sendmail server forward
all mail to the Exchange server. That way the Exchange server can scan &
clean all mail then have the Exchange server forward the mail back to
Sendmail for those users not on Exchange yet.
Problems I see with this is. 1) a possible mail loop problem. 2) I'm not
sure if the sendmail server is that smart(it's really old) 3) The load this
will put on the Exchange server.
Any help would be great.

Hi William,

Just check abt the patch Q304062.
I install this patch because Microsoft list this under their
security site as one of the security patch.
I take it from Microsoft all security patches need to be patched.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms01-041.asp
Also under the article it is stated that this will be part of
SP5 in future release, in fact a registry key is created

Just wonder is Microsoft going to release SP5 for Exchange 5.5?

Well, you've suggested applying hotfixes to 'fix one's problems'.

I am agreeing not to install hotfixes just because they exist.

Those are a little different, methinks.

Seeing how Microsoft's patches often fix issues which

a bit lame. The only way to know whether a hotfix

Recovery platform during migration from Ex 5.5 to 2k

2002-04-03 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Hi,

We are in the
transition from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2k.
Existing platform is
NT4.0 SP6a and Exchange 5.5 SP4.
Just some question
on the recovery server, to those of you who have gone through the
process.

We intend to setup a
recovery server during the process of migration, just in case anything
goes
wrong we can fall
back to Exchange 5.5.  We have engaged a vendor to assist us.  For
me
since after the
migration everything will be in win2k and active directory running, I will
prefer the
recovery server to
be win2k SP2 then install Exchange 5.5 with SP4.  The vendor
suggest
that the recovery
server should still be NT4.0 SP6a and Exchange 5.5 SP4.

The recovery server
is a standalone server, no DC or active directory will be running on
it.
Should I use win2k
or stick to NT4.0?  Any preference or reasons?

  Interesting question.

  The
migration is a 2 step process.

  NT
  --> W2K
  then
  E55
  --> E2K

There is a kb article on reversing a failed
  upgrade.
Alternatively, the migration paths are not really
destructive to the source server.  Up until mailbox moves, 5.5 can almost
be unplugged from the network, and data recovered.

  I
think you would maintain your old 5.5 recovery server on NT, since that is
what the source server is on.

RE: Allowing Rly

2002-04-18 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Hi,

Have tried this and yr concern is right. In Ex 5.5 SP4 on NT4 SP6a,
I ever add in the Routing Restriction to allow one IP to relay but
ended up something is messed up on blocking of relay. Have to search high
and low,
going through all configuration before come across the technet article
Q193922,
have to go to the registry to make sure the key RelayFlags has the correct
value before the whole thing work.

At the end realized that the RelayFlags Bits 1-4 are exclusive, it means
only 1 of the 4 bits should be set. Somehow for my case two of the bits are
set, I do not know why. After modify this key to correct value everything
work nicely. Manage to block all except some IP to relay. Try to recall
think only Bit 2
should be set, the rest should be zero.

I am trying to set up some monitoring tools on my Exchange Server. Currently
am running Ex 5.5 SP 4+ on an NT 4 PDC SP 6a+. I have on the routing tab to
allow hosts and clients with these address - is blank as per the relay
prohibit guidelines. So, here's the question -I want to be able to send to
my internal addresses as well as send an automated email to a foreign
address [EMAIL PROTECTED] Whenever I send, I get a relay error (which I
understand is correct).

How can I open things up for 1 address but still keep it locked down?

  Yes,
and there was recently a big web conference on this issue which you can find

configurations using two tiered firewalls etc etc

Appreciate all
suggestions.

I know this is
discussed before by putting the frontend servers at DMZ it compromised the
firewall
security.

After months of
planning we are migrating to Ex2k soon.  My site the firewall
configuration
is different, we
have two-level firewalls.  That is from internet it will go thru first
level firewall
to the DMZ, then
from DMZ go thru second level firewall to the internal
network.

Question:
With this two-level firewall is is safe to put the frontend servers at the
DMZ?

Thanks for any
help

Thanks
for the reply.  The load balancing only work on the web server that is at
IIS level.
But
the mailbox still reside on IS, If that IS is doing online defrag at exactly the
moment
that
IIS try to pull data, then what happens?  I will think the online defrag
should not affect.
If it
found out this mailbox is engaged it should ignore and go to next mailbox.
Any
other
reason, I have a remote backup agent running; if the backup kick in will this
affect?

  For
24x7 availability, you could load balance between two servers and bring them

  My
OWA deployments have always been 24x7.  Early service packs of Exchange
5.x OWA on IIS4 on NT4 had issues if well used, in my experience.
But online database maintenance and online backups should not cause OWA to be
unavailable.  There may be a small degradation of performance depending
on your hardware, etc, but nothing serious.

RE: how secondary?

2002-05-15 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

No, you do not need another Exchange server. Follow the URL from
William and go to section 3.23.

If you are hosting yr own domain and have yr own dns, then you need
to create another sub-domain and create another mx record to point to
the Exchange server. If the domain is hosted by ISP just ask the ISP
to host the sub-domain also.

I beleive you need to setup another exchange server, and your ISP has to
register your subdomain at their side.

Formula to calculate mail size after the MIME conversion

2002-05-18 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Hi,

Saw someone post abt
the max size of mails.  Just ask a related
question
here.

Anyone has a formula
to calculate the actual file size after conversion
to mail
attachment.  Say as example I have a Word doc, since
this is binary file,
it is 8-bits.  When I attach this Word doc as
mail attachment,
since SMTP protocol only supports ASCII,
the MIME protocol
will convert the 8-bits binary to ASCII - 7 bits, so
definitely the size
of the file will grow.

I have been telling
my users to expect a 12-15% growth, based purely
on my own
estimate.  Just check anyone has the exact formula or
any reference
URL?

Thanks, much
appreciated, wish everyone has a nice weekends.

RE: connection values for IMS

2002-07-05 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Just wish to add-on to this to check with the experts in this list.
Is the IMS in Ex5.5 or Virtual SMTP in Ex2k, multi-threaded.?
That is if the server is dual CPU, does it means each CPU takes
half the connections.

I ask the same question on the Unix Sendmail list sometime ago and was
told Sendmail is process based. Sendmail can process 30 mails per
second which means it can spawn 30 child process to process the load.
How abt Exchange?

what is the appropriate connection numbers in IMS Transfer Mode portion for

As all you know,the default values are below as below;

Max.no of Inbound Connections:30
Max.no of Outbound Connections:20
Max.no of Connections to a single host:10
Max.no of Messages sent in a Connection:8

Does increasing these values effect IMS performance?..If yes, how can i

RE: First OWA install

2002-07-10 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Not advisable. By design, Exchange 5.5 will replicate some DLL
files from the server with the latest service pack.

So those server with SP3 will get the latest DLL files from the OWA that
is running SP4. Not exactly sure which DLL files are replicated over,
can't find the exact article, nearest I can fine is Q147929, the following
sentences,

If this file exists on another Exchange Server computer in the same site, it
is dynamically replicated the next time the IMC property page is opened.
=

I will suggest just apply SP3 to OWA, then later on upgrade all servers to
SP4 later.

Subject: First OWA install

I'm about to install my first OWA server onto an existing IIS server.
The server does not currently have any SSL certificate. The intent is
to make an SSL site for OWA that is accessible to the Internet. The
OWA/IIS server will be inside the firewall (naturally) accessing
Exchange on a different box. Exchange 5.5 SP3, IIS 4.

So this is my intended ordering of The Things That Need To Be Done:

1. Install all security patches
2. Install IIS lockdown/URLscan, with provisions needed to permit OWA
operation (Q309508) 3. Generate SSL key pair, generate certificate from
cert server (another machine), and install cert. 4. Create new SSL web
site for OWA 5. Install OWA from 5.5 CD to site created in step 4 6.
Patch OWA to SP3

Is this the correct order and is anything major missing? One thing I'm
not sure of is whether the OWA install can create the SSL web site, and
if so, then step 4 isn't needed. I don't want OWA availability on port
80, ever.

Also, I know 5.5 SP4 is out there, but I'm under time constraint, and
5.5 SP3 is doing OK otherwise. Unless there major goofs relative to OWA
fixed by SP4, I'd just as soon leave well enough alone.

Thanks all,
Carl Houseman
