Strange messages in IMS Queue

2002-07-24 Thread Scott Oliver

Dear group,

Curious to know if anyone has seen this before.

NT 4.0 SP 6
Exchange 5.5 SP 3

When looking at the Internet Mail Service queue I
have found there are quite a few messages being held with the originator
name of. It appears that the system does not know who the messages
are from. This has been making me nervous. Does anyone have any clue to
why this is happening and how to stop the messages from coming in? Any help
would be awesome.

Could be spam attempts or something similar. You can look at the details
of the file and read the header information. I would tend to just delete
them if they are hanging there.

Change in IMS antirelaying settings betweem SP3 SP4?!

2002-07-10 Thread Dan Schwartz

OK, I have a weird one on my hands; and the docs seem to lead me in circles.
[Yeah, yeah... it's like putting me in a round room and telling me to piss in
the corner...]

Anyway, I rolled out a small Exch5.5/SP4 server on top of a self-contained
NT4 PDC with DNS service for a 5 user office, for both collaboration and
Internet email. When I followed the relevant MSKB articles to check Reroute
incoming SMTP mail (which they need for about a half -dozen .COM domains).

On the Routing Restrictions property sheet, though, is where the changes from
SP3 to SP4 seem to have occured: In SP3 I would check Hosts and clients with
these IP addresses and leave the address box EMPTY. This would provide the
two benefits I want:

1) Any external host that wants to *route* SMTP traffic to a GAL recipient
can do so;

2) Allowing authenticated users SMTP relaying (POP before SMTP emulation)
regardless of originating IP address.

If I check the Hosts and clients that successfully authenticate box then it
rejects SMTP routing.

I need the POP3 SMTP access for Mac clients, because of the LAN
configuration Outlook for Exchange does not work at all.

What did I miss in the SP3 to SP4 anti-relaying settings changes?

 Cheers!
 Dan

RE: connection values for IMS

2002-07-05 Thread ONG Liang Bu (CSC)

Just wish to add-on to this to check with the experts in this list.
Is the IMS in Ex5.5 or Virtual SMTP in Ex2k, multi-threaded.?
That is if the server is dual CPU, does it means each CPU takes
half the connections.

I ask the same question on the Unix Sendmail list sometime ago and was
told Sendmail is process based. Sendmail can process 30 mails per
second which means it can spawn 30 child process to process the load.
How abt Exchange?

IMS config backup utility?

2002-06-30 Thread Patrick Smallwood

Hello All,

Exch 5.5/SP4 etc

Application: To ensure duplicate setting on backup IMS, rather than
manually configuring settings.
Why: Starting backup IMS which is already configured on a prod. box is
quicker than restoring from backup...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q195804

I dont have a box right now to test this, or I would have at least tried
it. Has anyone used/seen this utility? Essentially, it sounds like you can
export the configuration of an IMS for restore at a later date on a
different machine. Although, article hints that this is for PSS assistance
only, and it does not state for use to restore onto a production box.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks
Pat

RE: IMS config backup utility?

2002-06-30 Thread William Lefkovics

It's great if you have lots of IMS connections or complicated routing
setups and need to change machines. But most people are not in that
position and recreating the settings takes no more time than using this
utility. I could see it as a backup/disaster recovery tool as well for
some.

I haven't used it in a few years, though.

RE: IMS config backup utility?

2002-06-30 Thread Benjamin Zachary

It looks like it does a lot more than that. A good documentation on your
IMC structure could be reproduced in about 5 minutes. A lot faster than
you could import all the usernames. Here is one of the bullet points
from that article

Immediately sets a flag in the information store, which prevents more
mail from being routed through the Internet Mail Connector

This cant be a good thing since it would seem you just rendered your IS
useless. Maybe I'm reading it wrong at 1am..

This is on a win2000 or NT4 server? Either way, you have to make sure the
machine has a FQDN -ie, the suffix is present. Is that what you were
checking? Seems a bit ambigous from what you mentioned.

interesting IMS issue,your comment pls?..

2002-05-29 Thread AHMET KAYA(EBI Bsk.- Uygulama Prog.)

hi,
Configuration:EXC. 5.5 with SP4 org. on MS NT Srvs. with SP6a
IMS installed on W2K and it is closed to OPEN RELAY,however 5 servers IPs
are permitted to be able to relay mail!..
(I can relay mail from these 5 servers which need to relay for a special
project.)

When i want to send an e-mail to some e-mail address via TELNET SMTP
connection,i can't achive this because of relay restriction despite of IP
exclusion!..
On the aother hand, when i send an e-mail to these e-mail addresses in the
internet via MAPI which is MS OUTLOOK,there is no problem!..

How would you comment this situation?..

2 IMS

2002-05-29 Thread AHMET KAYA(EBI Bsk.- Uygulama Prog.)

 hi all,

We have 2 IMS installed EXC. 5.5 on NT box and one of two is working
INBOUNDOUTBOUND.

The other one is being just for one IP server-BLACKBULL(the code
name)- which resides on IBM mainframe. This client is sending mail with java
packet via telnet connection,so it is not a mailbox assigned system.

I'd like to achieve that, could you pls help me:
the second IMS server would accept just only from the IP address
which belongs to BLACKBULL?..I don't want BLACKBULL to accept any other
messages inside all the organization?..How can i do this?Could you pls send
your replies immediately?..thank you very much for your comments?..

Exchange 2000 can accept multiple pop3/smtp connectors and routes, I
don't think you can make multiple IMS connectors in 5.5. I know there
are other connectors with other mail systems and you can route smtp
between servers so I guess Im not sure what you are trying to do ..

Besides with the cost of Exchange server, using it to just provide IMS
services for one box seems a little excessive.
Couldn't an SMTP server do the same job?

how IMS performance implemented?..

hi, i have really good questions;i'm not a real proffessional :(

I have just an IMS for Exchnage 5.5 installed on a W2K server.Total Mailbox
number in our unique site is 3000+.My users send excessively lots of mail
out from intranet to the internet.Although our internet output is 1 Mbps,IMS
queue is stucking extremely in business hours especially. So,the questions
are,

What can i do to improve the performance of IMS?
Can i use more than one IMS in the EXC. 5.5 organization for aiming load
balance?..If yes,how can i implement more than one IMS,for example may i use
3 IMS just for outbound at the same time on 3 EXC.5.5 servers?..

Yes, you can do everything you describe. If you have 3 IMSs you can set them
up with the same address space (SMTP:*) and they will all take outbound
mail. You could also set 2 up for outbound mail and one for inbound mail (or
any other combination).

But the problem comes when one IMS fails, as the MTA will continue to

RE: how IMS performance implemented?..

2002-05-28 Thread Carl Houseman

You probably need a faster connection to the Internet. For 3000+ mailboxes sending
excessively amounts of mail, 1 Mbps is not enough. If there is web traffic for
those 3000 users in addition to the E-mail, then your Internet connection is badly
overloaded.

By default the IMS permits multiple inbound and outbound connections, and you can
increase or reduce those numbers with just the one IMS. Additional IMS connectors are
not likely to help.

The IMS does allow you to limit the maximum message size, which may help. Your users
should be told that their large attachments are no longer permitted due to the
overload problem.

EventID4086 with Exchange 5.5 IMS

2002-05-28 Thread roger

Hi,

On rebooting our Exchange 5.5 (SP4) server, the Exchange IMS refuses to
start. All other Exchange services start fine. The only error in any of
the event logs is one with the EventID4086 - Unable to start the service
because the configuration could not be loaded from the Microsoft Exchange
directory or Windows NT Registry.

The MSDN library and MS KB site suggest that the SiteDN value in the
registry may be incorrect. However this is not the case. There is not
alot of other suggestions from these sources. I've tried adding the
Exchange service account to the Domain Admin group, but again no luck.

Would be grateful if anyone could help shed any light or make any
suggestions.

Thanks

Roger

They are actually held in the

What
it is is this:
I
exported the key from server 1 and imported it to server 2
It
doesnt just take that one value.. it takes the whole Key.
When
it does this, it puts the values of Server 1 in that Parameters key, along with
any other server values from Server 1
I had
to go in and edit that key to put Server 2 in there.
then I
was able to start IMS

Do you
mean the whole Parameters KEY? Or are you talking about VALUES? I've never had
any problem with this value. In fact, I use it in a program. It was only this
VALUE you needed to move across not the whole KEY.

You
can't. Well, not really from the standard regedit or regedt32. You can export a
.reg file with the whole KEY in it and then edit the file to only include the
one VALUE.

IMS and Information Store Terminating

2002-03-18 Thread Don Guyer
Title: IMS and Information Store Terminating

Hello everyone,

We're having an issue here with our Exchange 5.5 SP4 server, running on W2k server SP2. Within the last 4-5 days, the IMS and Info Store have been terminating themselves. Nothing useful is logged in Event Viewer (surprise, huh?), but our Internet bandwidth has risen dramatically, and viewing our usage reports, is very high (90+ percent) at the times this has occurred. I'm taking a stab that Exchange is getting jammed up and is not able to release mail. Has anyone witnessed this or have any information to share?

Thanks in advance!

HELP! My IMS is down and I am out of ideas.

2002-03-15 Thread Nick Symiakakis

Hi Everyone,
I restarted my Exchange Server running 5.5 after I had uninstalled MS
Outlook on it to move Outlook to another partition, and now my IMS is not
coming back up. I am getting an error Event ID 4116, and 4018. 4018
states: Unable to start the Internet Mail Service because MAPI could not
be initialized. I have looked through the Knowledge base, and have checked
all of the areas that they suggest, but I am still not able to start the
service. I am here all night until I can get this up so I would appreciate
any help.

Thank you in advance,

I am pretty sure that outlook replaces the exchange mapi with a version of it's own. You might try to reservice pack and see if that brings the correct version back into play.

remove the connector and reintall it.

Multiple IMS in Exchange 5.5

2002-02-20 Thread Ropiak Steve - NAO Florence Office IT

Exchange 5.5 SP3+ on NT4. Right now, Exchange points to a Linux box running
sendmail as our method of sending / receiving Internet mail. The networking
guys want to add a second Linux box (with it's own MX record) and a higher
cost so that if the first box goes down mail would automatically flow to the
second box. I'm not sure how to do this on the Exchange side. If I add a
second IMS connector in Exchange how do I control which one is actively
used? The goal is to have this roll over automatically.

RE: Multiple IMS in Exchange 5.5

2002-02-20 Thread William Lefkovics

The problem you will find here is that because the IMS is actually an EDK
gateway, the MTA will not re-route messages to a different IMS. Basically,
once the MTA has deposited the messages in the queue for the IMS, that's
where they stay.

But a redundant IMS for inbound works great. :o)

What you could consider is putting both IP addresses of your two Linux boxes
into the one IMS. On the connections tab, specificy both IP addresses with
a comma, e.g. 10.1.1.1,10.1.1.2 etc. This produces a reasonable load
balancing act between the two Linux boxes. Obviously, inbound messages will
be load balanced if your MX records are set to the same preference.

IMS Outbound Queue

2002-01-28 Thread Chris Thelen

I am running Exchange 5.5 SP4 with Trend Micro Scan. I frequently have
messages stack up in my IMS outbound queue. It seems like it is only
specific domains that I have trouble with, but when they send me something

message, it say's that there was a network error and couldn't resolve the
domain name. I then click retry and then 90% of the time it will send it.
I use my ISP's DNS servers. I am baffled. Any idea's what it could be?

Internal IMS problem

2002-01-23 Thread Shauna Ryall

I am trying to set up an IMS with MSN 4.6. I have downloaded the correct
client onto the machines.
We are running E2K SP2. I have an MX record in my DNS and I do have ISA
running on another server.
Problem: Can see internal IMS contacts, but can't send a message. Get a
message can not be send error.
Working: MSN 4.6 for internet works great.

I am not sure if I need to adjust the ISA server or ???

Thanks in advance.

IMS, Accepting only specific connections, how to? Please help?

2002-01-22 Thread Howie Pince

Hey,

I am NOT a Exchange expert, just another geek trying to get the job
done.

That is why I sumbit
this problem to this GREAT forum of EXPERTS!

Anyway enough
sucking up for now:-

SBS 4.5 Sp6,
Exchange 5.5 sp4

Suits ok'ed a AV
service called"Message Labs" to start scanning our in outbound
email, starting this weekend.

Ineed to
change our DNS MX records to point our email domain to Messages Labs servers
instead of to my Exchange server directly. no prob

In IMS I need to
change "message delivery" in the IMS properties page to "forwardall
messages to host XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX" so all outgoing mail goes to their
scanner boxagain no prob

I also need to setup
"Accept Connections from - ", right now it's set at 'all servers, secure or
unsecure", want toonly accept connections for that Message labs scanner
box by IP, but if you select "Only from hosts using - :" you MUST either use
authenication, encryption, or both? This IS a
problem!

So my questions
are:

Do I setup another
NT or Exchange account for Message Labs server and give then the username and
password for this Authentication or?

If so, then if I
list under "Specify Hosts:" Message Labs severs IP, will all other hosts be
"rejected" by deault? how can you reject all but specific
IP's

Can't you just add
deny 0.0.0.0 to reject all other hosts or?

Thanks much in
advance..

2002-01-22 Thread Campbell, Rob

I don't think the global reject is going to work, but it can't hurt to try.
Otherwise, you might consider putting another NIC in each server set up on a
private network with a crossover cable, and disabling port 25 on the adapter
with the public address in the Exchange server.

IMS hung up again...

2002-01-14 Thread Mike Zatkalik

This is the 3rd time my IMS hung over the past 3 months. I am not sure what
happened, as I do not see any errors in the Event Log. When trying to stop
the IMS, it timed out after approximately 15 mins with a message essentially
saying it could not be stopped. When trying to restart it, I get a message
saying it cannot be started in it's current state. Same thing happens when
I try to stop all the Exchange related services. I was talking with a buddy
who recommends lowering the max inbound and outbound connections, but mine
are set to defaults and just wondering if anybody else agrees, or disagrees,
with this thought. They are currently at default, which is 30 inbound, 20
outbound. Any other suggestions?

Generally speaking, no it's not, but I am considering that IMS might be
processing too much mail, pegging out the processor, and somehow causing the
service to hang. This machine does do a few other network functions, ie:

Not sure exactly what you mean by how the server is connected, but let me
see what I can do...

The server is connected directly to our network, soon to be put in the DMZ,
only has one nic, with current drivers. Not sure what else might be
helpful.

I noticed that mail stopped flowing on Monday morning, but the queue hung on
Sunday evening sometime after 5:30 as that was the last message I got. I
have not been able to find anything out of the ordinary in the app log, no
errors or warning relating to Exchange. I would be happy to show you a
screenshot, but I really don't see anything that looks strange.

Thanks for the information. I just reran the performance optimiser, and in
a couple months, we will have the dmz up and then IMS is getting reinstalled
on another machine and hopefully at that point SP4 will also get installed.

Thanks,

1) rerun performance optimiser.

or

2) Apply Service Pack 4.
Then rerun Performance Optimiser.

or

3) remove and reinstall the IMS. Repply service pack 3, then
rerun performance optimiser.

Possibly check your backup schedules in relationship to your Maintenance Schedule. I had this problem before and it turned out that backups were kicking off at the same as my IMS's Maintenance Schedule. As soon as I changed that around it stopped happening.

Not sure exactly what you mean by how the server is connected, but let me see what I can do...

The server is connected directly to our network, soon to be put in the DMZ, only has one nic, with current drivers. Not sure what else might be helpful.

I noticed that mail stopped flowing on Monday morning, but the queue hung on Sunday evening sometime after 5:30 as that was the last message I got. I have not been able to find anything out of the ordinary in the app log, no errors or warning relating to Exchange. I would be happy to show you a screenshot, but I really don't see anything that looks strange.

How is the server connected? Make sure you have the most up to date NIC drivers.

Was there anything in the app event log at all that might assist?

Generally speaking, no it's not, but I am considering that IMS might be processing too much mail, pegging out the processor, and somehow causing the service to hang. This machine does do a few other network functions, ie: WINS, PDC, STMP, but I don't think they stress the server either.

Under NT4, you still needed to fill in the DNS host and domain names
within the networking properties on the server in order to install the
IMS - it's probably the same under Windows 2000, e.g. you need to enter
the primary DNS suffix of the server, etc.

RE: IMS Mailbox Size Limit Warning

2002-01-07 Thread Lynn Karen

If I've understood Sui Seto correctly, we're talking about the IMS General
tab where the maximum message size is specified - rather than the usual
mailbox Issue Warning/Prohibit Send/Disable Mailbox limits? I have no
maximum message size set there, but in Mailbox Resources the Internet Mail
Service mailbox is shown as disabled - despite containing 0 items, at a
total size of 0 etc.

I have seen this before, and although it went back to Below Limit when I
last rebuilt the server I've never done anything about it. Mail still comes
in and goes out (assuming you get this message !), so I've not investigated
further: just assumed it's one of those little cosmetic glitches!

no problems with the email system so far and mails are flowing in and out

Out of the box, the answer is no.

I've setup my IMS to reject messages from a distribution list. In that
distribution list I've added a test user. When I attempt to send an
SMTP message from that test mailbox, I get the following NDR:
Either the message size exceeds the maximum allowed for the recipient or
transport, or you have exceeded the storage limit on your mailbox.
Is there any way to customize this message? I'd like it to say
something like You do not have access to send and/or receive Internet
email. Sucks to be you. Or something like that. :-)
Thanks in advance!

IMS is crashing due to *.vir files

2001-11-20 Thread Spykey

Hi all.

I am stumped by a virus related problem. The IMS on my exhange server is
crashing due to the appearance of files with names such as JV8TX3YL.vir in
the folder \imcdata\in. My virus scanner is identifing them as
W32/SirCam@MM but is unable to clean or delete them. My server however is
not infected with the SirCam virus. I am running Exchange5.5 SP4 on NT4
SP6a and Network Associates Groupshield.

Has anyone else experienced this one or know of a solution?

Thanks,

Carl.

The IMC and GroupShield are trying to deal with the file at the same time -
there is a hotfix IF you have a grant number and are willing to WAIT on
hold, you can get it from NAI.

RE: IMS is crashing due to *.vir files

2001-11-20 Thread Carl Baumann

Thanks Steve - now I just have to find that licencing documentation. Two
weeks in a new job and I haven't even come across the disks yet! As an
alternative measure do you know of any way to identify the offending message
and strip it out? or would temporarily stopping the GroupShield service
allow the message through to a mailbox where it could then be dealt with?

Regards, Carl.
