Sounds like a ./configure --prefix=/usr is required on build

check and see if the software wasn't installed in /usr/local rather than /usr

[expert] ADSL INFO

I would like to give thanks to those who offered suggestions as to
necessary configuration/setup for DSL service under Linux-Mandrake,
Civilme ,Vincent Danen Jean-Michelt Dault. Thank you for your advise and
direction. I have found that initially to setup infospeed dsl service
acount with bellatlantic.net as the service provider requires that you
be running a version of Windows95,98,NT,or the MAC OS, I will need to
dig up some install CD's and put Windows on my clients system in order
to initiate the services with bellatlantic.net. Once that is
accomplished it appears as though the setup In Linux should be quite
easy, I hope any way. Thank's once again for the advise.
I would also like to acknowledge the Great efforts of the Mandrake
developers in providing a very nice version of 7.1 (Helium)
I have installed it now on six different systems 2 of which were fresh
installs and 4 that were upgrades, including my own system and all seems
to be working very well. Thank's for all your effort's, Great Job !

Hello

Sorry I used OE to write my latest letter and missed to kick HTML off.
I have used Linux (mostly RedHat) for two years. I love it. Most of it has gone
smothly. I installed mdk 7.02 without a hassle and it was very good. Then I
read from the list about the new and better 7.1 and thougt it would be a
hassle to upgrade (I knew although that it should take a long time). But when I
tried to install the 7.1b - as I wrote in my latest letter - the upgrade did not
function and then a new install did not work the elegant way 7.0 did. I wonder
if any of you have made the upgrade to 7.1 and can tell me how it went. and
where you did get your files/CDs from. I bought mine from cheapbytes.com.

Re: [expert] GNU/Linux -- Follower or Leader?

2000-06-08 Thread Necrotica

Before I start, let me apologize if this email doesn't look right.but my
Linux installation is currently out of service as I am upgrading to Mandrake
7.1.

Anyways, while installing the new Mandrake release I have been thinking
about the original "Follower or Leader" email that was posted yesterday. The
author, whose name I unfortunately forget at this time, made some very valid
points. While certain companies are innovating Linux developers seem to be
playing catch up and developing even more text editors.

I have to agree with the author in the context to which his email was
written. Linux, for the most part, tends to follow the lead of other
companies who are developing for rival operating systems. But thats OK. And
let me tell you why.

Microsoft's biggest player is the Windows client: Windows 9x. A pure client
operating system if there ever was one developed. Although not robust or
stable by any stretch of the imagination, Windows 9x caters to the home
user. Johnny Sixpack can go buy a new computer with preinstalled Windows 9x
software and learn how to use it to his desire within a few days or weeks,
depending on how much time he spends in the Windows 9x environment. He
doesn't need to know how the operating system works, and for that matter he
doesn't care. Initially he wants to "install the Internet" and play a few
games. Once he becomes a little more comfortable with the new digital
paradigm he might dive into the world of personal finances and other
"useful" applications that can be easily bought from his local SuperTarget
or Circuit City.

Microsoft caters to Johnny. If it weren't for Johnny wanting to install the
Internet Microsoft would not be in the position that its currently in.
Microsoft wants Johnny to remain loyal, but Microsoft knows that someday
Johnny is going to get a little bored. So Microsoft spends millions of
dollars each year in research and development to razzle dazzle Johnny.
Imagine how impressed Johnny will be when he can command his computer with
spoken words!

And then there's the filthy few: people who generally have above average
intelligence, a knack for technology, and usually consider "computer
science", in any of its forms, to be a hobby. They know the Internet isn't
an application. They remember life before IRC when they had access to a
"borrowed" university VMS account, typed in 'yzzy relay' at a prompt and all
of a sudden were talking to people all over the planet. They had no idea how
it worked, but man, it was cool! They showed their friends and the friends
didn't care. So they spent time at home learning more, experimenting more,
and realizing that the computer can empower its user to do just about
anything. They also soon realized that Microsoft's premier client operating
system wasn't enough. These are the people that use Linux.

I am one of those people. I am 28 years old and have been using a computer
for 17 years. Although its no longer my interest I was programming in 8-bit
assembler on a Commodore 64 by the time I was 12. When I was 13 and
discovered the miracles of marijuana I was coding in pure machine language
(had to be stoned for that). Networking is my thing now. I get such a
superiority complex when I'm planning, designing, or administering a
network. I know my stuff.

And I can type faster than I could ever hope decent speech recognition
software could ever keep up. I don't care about the latest advances in the
user interface - I want the machine to work. I want my software to work
properly. I want the ability to configure EVERYTHING because I know I
possess the skill set to do it correctly. And most of all I want to learn.

Whether Linux is a follower or a leader just doesn't matter. Linux works.
Linux empowers. Linux doesn't crash. Although there is sometimes a lot of
preliminary work, Linux lets me do the stuff that I need to do a lot faster.
Johnny doesn't need a caching proxy server. Hell I don't think I do either.
But I have one simply because I can, its cool, and I'm smart enough to do
it.

I want to know my operating system inside and out. Johnny doesn't.

I want to be able to easily write a dumb little program for no reason at all
other than for the challenge of doing it. Johnny would rather download
something.

I don't want to pay for my software. Johnny doesn't mind buying the software
he uses.

There are a lot of Johnnys out there. Its these people who are easily taken
by the smoke and mirrors of Microsoft. But the people in the Filthy Few, the
ones who will one day be senior account managers, senior analysts, and
senior vice presidents of major corporations because of their skill and
knowledge of the industry, know better.

I think most Linux users would feel the same way.

I'm using gFTP now for some time. It has a nice GUI, you can

D'l.
I use it to up/download my homepage stuff

on text-based FTP), and a QUE functionality, wherby I can
add a ton of files from anywhere to a QUE, then transfer
them. For small stuff I still and probably always will
just use the text-based ftp program. However, the industry
(their are people out there who are GUI only that might
want to use a little linux) still doesn't have a perfect
GUI ftp client yet, although GFTP is 70% there, if not 90%
there, all it really needs is a QUE functionality like
Cute-FTP, and maybe a MP3 file search like Cute-FTP, and
that would be 100% what the industry needs

Re: [expert] ATA/66 HPT366 with 7.1

2000-06-08 Thread M Thompson

The Mandrake kernel doesn't ship with the IDE patch included. Suse
developed the patch but it is still somewhat buggy. The other distros still
hesitate to use it.

Check out this link:
http://linux.nf/stepbystep.htm
click on the Ultra66 link.

Those links will explain how to install Linux onto a drive that's connected
to an ATA66 controller.

Hope that helps,
Matt

If your current drive has performed well and you plan to keep it installed, stay
with your brand. The timing requirements are likely to be much more compatible.

My own personal considerations these days run to IBM and Quantum because the data
I have collected suggests a better MTBF in those brand names. It is however
dangerous to assume that MTBF by brand name calculations are valid--there are too
many models and technical approaches within a single technology to say that
figuring backwards from data points will produce the correct curve.

Seagate is good for certain chipsets, but I have observed signal reflections on
i810, VIA MVP3, and MVP4, Intel 430 TX, and ALi Aladdin V under Pentium code. The
problem is highly pronounced with TX chipsets, resulting in corrupt data that
appears to write OK and is totally unreadable when the TX chipset is clocked at 75
MHz (as for a Cyrix processor). I did get "lost interrupt" errors on a very
modern i810 with a Celeron 400 and a Barracuda 10.2G. Windows, FreeBSD, and such
loaded fine, but Stampede, Enoch and Mandrake could not even install. (All were
processor optimised) Mandrake 486 could run this with only occasional reports of
disk errors.

Sure they're common, but why the heck would you WANT to use
a WinModem? WinModems suck BIG time! I have one built-into
the motherboard of one of my computers and I've disabled it

Re: [expert] external dsl modem (Westel)

I just set up dsl for my bro-in law and he used pppoe to connect.
I used the "roaring-penguin (no URL handy), which is what it sounds
like you are using. We were able to get it working, but the one
"gotcha" was that during the install program, they ask you to provide
a username, and the example they give is "username@accessprovider",
however, at that stage, only give the username. After that everything
(including the firewall scripts) worked like an absolute charm.

You can email me if you have more problems.

Well I want a good file-manager intergraded with samba somthing like Corel
Linux file manager for KDE but it must have a ftp link on the tree view where
you can and ftp sites, and logins.

It alredy has NFS, windows network and local file system.

This is the only reason I use Corel for desktops and Mandrake for Servers.

I, too, have a 3-d card here and at home. Here, I've got a

You'll need to recompile the Mesa and GL drivers, I think,
to get it to use the on-board hardware acceleration.
Otherwise, you've just got a REALLY nice SVGA card. :-)
That's what I have to do for my Voodoo3-3000 PCI at home. I

But because you said your 7.1 CD set was coming from LinuxMart

Why?! Because I hadn't been able to find such a product at

Instaling gcc make and automake on a instalation afther the normanl install
I get the following error on ./configure

-
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler

I used
rpm --install
to install the files. What did I do wrong and how can I fix this without
reinstalling Mandrake 7.02

I know that this program compiles with Mandrake if I do a devoloper instalation.

ncftp has tab completion of file names, which helps a lot. It also has

first introduced in version 7.0 and adds many new features certain to
please both beginners and experts alike.

The Linux-Mandrake 7.1 GPL archive now spans one or two Cd-Roms to bring
you the best and most up-to-date applications available.

The 7.1 highlights include: support for multiple Cd-Roms at installation
time, a new journalized filesystem, a highly tuned Apache web server and
a web-based configuration tool that allows remote configuration of a
Linux-Mandrake system through a network.

"Linux-Mandrake 7.1 is our latest offering which provides a complete and
powerful operating system ideal for most needs - from the home user to
the demands of an enterprise with high-performance servers, and all at
low cost. With the ergonomic improvements and server solutions provided
with this release, Linux-Linux-Mandrake 7.1 has a great chance of
becoming the new Linux standard for both enterprise and home use."
declared Jacques Le Marois, President of MandrakeSoft.

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 is now available for download from many locations
throughout the Internet. The boxed version, including commercial
applications, printed manuals and support will be available in retail
outlets at the end of June, 2000.

Here's a sampling of some of the most noteworthy benefits:

- Linux-Mandrake 7.1 introduces a new menuing system. Applications now
appear in the same categories under all graphical environments and
update automatically as new packages are installed or removed.

- Linux-Mandrake 7.1 offers the new Reiser journalized file system as an
option within the new DrakX graphical installer and after installation
with DiskDrake, the graphical hard drive partitioning application.

- A highly customized version of Webmin is included. Webmin uses the
familiar interface of a web browser to easily setup user accounts,
configure Apache, DNS, FTP, view system statistics and most other
system/server tasks. Webmin can be used remotely from another PC and
even from other operating systems simply by using a web browser.

- Apache 1.3.12 is enhanced with the latest high-performance offerings
from the "Accelerating Apache Project" and provides out-of-the-box
support for Php3, Perl and Ssl extensions.

- Cutting-edge XFree 4.0 servers with new modular architecture is
available in the "Expert" installation class, XFree 3.3.3.1 is standard
for other classes.

- The Grub user-friendly bootloader is now provided as default. Lilo is
an optional bootloader in an "Expert" install. Both Grub and Lilo now
overcome the 1024-limit.

- Helix Code Gnome improvements are incorporated into the Linux-Mandrake
7.1 Gnome-Sawfish desktop environment.

- DrakFont is our new open-source font manager for Linux-Mandrake 7.1.
This utility provides an easy and convenient way to manage fonts on a
Linux system. DrakFont can add, remove and even retrieve Ms-Windows
fonts (if located on the same machine) and make these fonts available to
Linux applications.

- Kernel 2.2.15 with Linux-Mandrake extensions (secure kernel,
supermount option).

- Ata 66 (Udma 66) is supported for users seeking the
highest-performance from Ide hard drives.

- i810-based mainboards are now supported in Linux-Mandrake 7.1.

- Enhanced USB support for modems, printers, Zip drives, keyboards and
mice.

- "Wheel" mice are fully functional within most applications (Netscape,
Gnome, Kde, many others).

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 continues to provide features that aren't available
in any other Linux distributions such as Supermount (transparent access
to removable media), LSec (Linux security levels), multi-language
support and processor optimizations. Try Linux-Mandrake 7.1 today and
see for yourself why Linux-Mandrake is becoming the preferred choice for
both new and advanced users alike.

[expert] NCR 53C*xx raid controller

2000-06-08 Thread mandrake

I have a compaq proliant mk530 with the NCR 53C8XX pci raid controller and mandrake
7.1 will not recognize the disk attached to it. When trying to install I get the
following error:

no valid devices were found on which to create new file system.

The system has redhat 6.2 installed so I know the controller/disks are fine.

Any ideas why?

My ISP is Nucleus (based out of Calgary, AB) so I get my ADSL from
them. And it's 1.5MB download and 640k upload speeds I believe. But I
get to do pretty much anything I like with it except for streaming
audio/video, and I got 7 static IP addresses so it works out pretty
good. And many people have said it's faster than when I was using SHAW
for the @home cable connection (for my website and FTP downloads and
such). Go figure. =)

BTW, I'm in Edmonton, AB.

Box #1 gateway is eth0 (set by DSL ISP)
Box #1 NIC to tub is eth1 (192.168.100.1)

Box #2 NIC to hub is eth1 (192.168.100.2)
Box #2 gateway is 192.168.100.1 (box #1's eth1)

Well I tried this last night and nut'in honey, hmmm. From box #2 I tried pinging

Well, what I really look for is something with Tree-based file-system view (long
filanes get to be a pain on text-based FTP), and a QUE functionality, wherby I can add
a ton of files from anywhere to a QUE, then transfer them. For small stuff I still
and probably always will just use the text-based ftp program. However, the industry
(their are people out there who are GUI only that might want to use a little linux)
still doesn't have a perfect GUI ftp client yet, although GFTP is 70% there, if not
90% there, all it really needs is a QUE functionality like Cute-FTP, and maybe a MP3
file search like Cute-FTP, and that would be 100% what the industry
needs

2) On an install / upgrade, all I'd really want in an upgrade is a chance to choose
amongst saving all the more common settings (users , home directory settings for root,
apache settings, mysql settings etc..) everything else can be Wiped and re-installed,
it's easier and generally less problem-prone, IMHO

By the way, a lot of your sugestions were found "good" and "simple

Some other requests were found "too dificult", so we cannot do anything

No, the drives are setup properly. One as SCSI 0 and one as 1. The SCSI BIOS
detects everything, including termination properly. The last drive on the chain
has term power enabled (boy are those new jumpers SMALL!) and the active
terminator is installed on the last phy connector on the chain (which happens to
be immediately following the drive)

[expert] 7.1 install problem: can't take sqrt of -0.355924

2000-06-08 Thread Florian Gnägi

Hi

I tried installing 7.1. However, after 'Format partitions' the
installations proces breaks.

On console 3 I get the following error message:

warning: Can't take sqrt of -0.355924 at /usr/bin/perl-install/pkgs.pm
line 186

befor this message I have some 'unknown package' and 'unknown entry'
messages.

I'm installing over network from a local mirror, tried it with ftp or nfs.

I have a dual celeron-board, raid0 with two disks and reiserFS on top of
it, however, I don't think it has anything to do with the problem as I
also tried it with the old Linux native filesystem.

When I ignore the message and just click on the next star on the left side
i starts installing a very basic system. All other installing steps do
work well and the new system is booting, also with reiser, however, it is
really a very basic system and I wan't to have the 'everything' system,
not the 'basic' system...

I had no problem to set up Mandrake 7.0 on the same machine, raid and
linux ntive filesystem.

Can anybody help me?

And yes, when I use the installer in text mode it crashes after the
selection of my mouse when it comes to the keyboard selection. It says
no memory left or somehing...

Too bad that I wiped my old running system for a new 7.1 with reiser :-(

Any help is appreciated!

[expert] Mandrake 7.1 Plus -- where to get it

2000-06-08 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I found the 2-CD Linux 7.1 at LinuxMart. I got there from the
www.mandrake.com page (Look for Purchase, CD on the left). The URL for
LinuxLand is

http://www.LLand.com/

The specific URL for the 2-CD 7.1 with full description is at:

http://www.LLand.com/products/specialsview.asp?ID=49

Of course, I can't say anything else until I get it, hopefully on Friday
(2-day standard delivery). You can even get it overnight if you are
willing to pay for it.

WARNING 1: Be sure you order the 2-CD 7 Plus (7+) and NOT the 1-CD 7.
WARNING 2: Note that the 7.1 Power Pack ($46) won't be available till
JULY (!), so don't order it unless you are willing to wait till then.
The PowerPack is always a few weeks behind the latest version just put
out. The present PowerPack is for 7.0, not 7.1!

Yours,

Benjamin

Re: [expert] external dsl modem (Westel)

2000-06-08 Thread Jean-Michel Dault

Mandrake 7.1 has the rp-pppoe and pppoe-linuxconf packages, so it's easy
to configure. With some modems, you might want to set the timeout to 0 in
/etc/ppp/pppoe.conf, but with most providers it should work right out of
the box.

Tested with a Nortel modem with Sympatico (Canada) and an Alcatel modem
with France Telecom.

Vincent, what ISP are you using? You're in Canada right? What kind of DSL
service do you have (download/upload)...

Just curious.
