[expert] CD ROM FLOPPY access problem, need help
Hi all: I know this must have been coverd before, but I can not locate the answer. While in root, I clicke on Harddrake. It failed to launch, went to a black screen with a white rectangle in the center, I was forced to kill X to regain control. I rebooted now I am locked out of my CD ROM and Floppy. Even root is locked out. Can some kind soul point out what must be changed in the configureation files to give me back control. Thanks for your help. -- Ralph F. Must admit I haven't played with it much - it's too much of a pain getting the NVIDIA drivers working with a 2.4 kernel I think. I do know that you can get the hack kernel (2.4.whatever) from Mandrake 7.2 to boot with a Reiser FS system just by turning off high memory support and recompiling though. I've also tried a few other 2.4.x test kernels, and they work the same way with Reiser FS.

Seems things have changed a bit.. but here is QA from reiserfs homepage FAQ Q. Can reiserfs be used as a root partition? A. Yes, but you must mount /boot with the -notail option. Al, I really haven't found configuring a mandrake box for server duties and making it secure anything of a nightmare. If you're layering your security it's just a matter of getting everything in place, closing all the right doors, setting up the firewall and getting your portsentry and other odds and ends active and running. Re: [expert] Why is Netscape 6.0 so slow?
If that is true why does Nutscape 6.0 load the Java VM (again this is on the win2k version, my linux workstation is scrubbed so I cannot compare)? It might not be the renderer but some part of Nutscape is using the Java VM. Also its renderer is not even in the same ball park as NS 4.75 let alone IE. Its slow crap. I'd much rather use Konquerer or IE or Opera or plane old 4.75. Re: [Fwd: Re: [expert] Starting Fetchmail]
Dan, Have you thought about adding the command to launch fetchmail to /etc/ip-up.local? I was just sitting here reading your post and I thought of that. That is where the command to start my firewall is, and the firewall starts each and every time a connection is made to the internet. So, when ip-up.local is executed the firewall is started. [expert] Desktop device icons, folders, etc, don't work
As a user, if you are running KDE 2.1 and try to create a new device or folder on your desktop, it appears not to work. You can create the icon just fine but it wont work when you select it. Could someone please use an editor and view the device kdelnk in their Desktop directory (preferably from KDE 2.0, 2.0.1 or 2.1) and post the contents? Specifically, if you have a functional floppy, zip, or harddrive device icon on your desktop, please post the text contained in the kdelnk for in it Desktop/. For my non-functional Zip Drive kdelnk, for instance, it reads: [Desktop Entry] Dev=/mnt/zip FSType=supermount Icon=3floppy_mount MountPoint=/mnt/zip Type=FSDevice UnmountIcon=3floppy_unmount I believe there MUST be some entries missing and no matter what one does with "Open With" and/or "Remember application association for this file", proper corresponding entries are not made to the kdelnk file. If I could see one that actually works, perhaps I could manually add the requisite entries to my desktop devices and get them to work.

[expert] fstab entry for supermount
In trying to fix my problem with desktop devices not working, I altered my fstab for cdrom, zip, and floppy to eliminate the supermount and made them the old-fashioned manual mount devices. I would like to go back to supermount but cannot recall the syntax and there is no backup fstab with the supermount entries in them. As for the problem with the devices and directories...I deleted .kde, .kderc, and my Desktop directory and then restarted kde 2.1. It recreated my Home, and Trash icons. They did not work when selected. Instead I would get the "Open with" dialog box. I selected "Home directory" as instructed in another message. It worked. It does NOT work if I create the item myself via the desktop menu with Create new...-> CDROM, Floppy, etc, device. So. I now have the Trash and Home directory icons working on my desktop. I need to now try AGAIN to create my harddrive, zip, cdrom, and floppy devices and try to get THEM working.

Yes! I do get that message, at least for Home, Startup, and Trash. I get nothing for the devices. I have no trouble with streaming audio or playing .wav files either, so I'm not suspecting a problem with the sound card (SoundBlaster 128 PCI, Esoniq 1371 driver). I've done a Google search which tuned up LOTS of similar reports but no solutions. Is this a recognized problem -- perhaps having to do with SCSI emulation on an ATAPI/IDE CDRW? Any insights here would be most appreciated. Thanks. M. -- Michael O'Henly TENZO Design

Re: [expert] Why is Netscape 6.0 so slow?
Netscape 6s rendering engine is NOT written in Java. This is complete bullshit. Its written in XUL, a DTD for XML. Yes, Netscape 6s UI is slow [its rendering is faster than IE], and requires RAM. Mozilla 0.6 seems *much* faster in the UI department. If you want fast HTML rendering with full standards support, go for Mozilla 0.6, Galeon, or the Mozill KPart announced last week. [expert] ADSL connection and local networks
I'm having trouble configuring an ADSL connection for my home network with DrakConf. I have two computers and one ADSL modem connected to a hub (AOpen 5-port Ethernet Hub). It would be better if two machines could use the modem independently. I have configured the Internet connection using DrakConf and all the routing configuration appears to be reset whenever the adsl service is started. This is no good because those computers cannot reach each other anymore. I have to do /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart in order to restore my routing configuration. I put /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart in /etc/rc.local, so I don't have to run that command manually. It doesn't seem to be the smartest solution, but it works. But the problem is that Mandrake Linux configuration tools don't seem support sophisticated LAN configurations... Is there a smarter solution that can be used by people who need point-and-click instructions? I can edit my start-up scripts, but I know many people who can't...

Re: [expert] Why is Netscape 6.0 so slow?
Netscape 6.0 rendering engine is written in Java. When you load a Java based program it must load the Java Virtual Machine which is not fast and eats about 25-32 megs of ram (at least on a win2k workstation it does). If you don't have 128+ megs of RAM Nutscrape 6.0 will be almost intolerable when it comes to speed. *** REPLY SEPARATOR *** On 11/25/2000 at 10:32 PM Eduardo Mazoni Andrade Marcal Mendes scribbled: >Hello > I have installed Netscape 6.0 only to be convinced that it is the >worse nightmare ever. Re: [expert] Starting Fetchmail
Dan, What you first have to do is make sure that fetchmail is checked to start automatically in Drakeconf->Startup Services. When you've done that restart your system. Then is you wish to run fetchmail from a terminal window you can issue this command; fetchmail -u username mail.yourhost.com If you wish to run fetchmail as a daemon issue the command this way: fetchmail -d 150 -u username mail.yourhost.com If you wish to setup fetchmail once and for all then on the command line issue this command: fetchmailconf This will open a fetchmail configuration utility that will allow you to create a .fetchmailrc file that will be read and executed when ever you start your machine and connect to the internet, and/or open a terminal window and issue just a plain fetchmail command to either awaken or initiate the fetchmail process. One way is to run fetchmail as a daemon. Put this in your ~/.bash_profile fetchmail -d 300 This will run fetchmail when you're logged in, polling your mail host every 300 seconds. There can be a couple of packages not in mdk, but are neglectible. Even some of the packages are more up to date and bug-safe in mdk 7.2. Helix Gnome is well suited for old distros like mdk 7.1 or rh 6.2, that included gnome 1.0, but mdk 7.2 and rh 7.0 include full gnome 1.2 out of the box. [expert] Home Networking Feedback needed
I need to get some ideas and feedback concerning the way my system is setup. Here is my current setup. A cable modem into a linksys router(ssh is the only open port), one machine acting as a server (this pc is a step away from a museum), it's a cyrix pr200 with 64mb of ram. It basicly provides print services, file storage and samba for windows clients. 1 Mandrake 7.2 client(dual boots with windows), 1 Redhat 7.0 client (not for long) and 1 windows pc (kiddy games and such). After the new year I want to revamp my whole setup here which will include some sorely needed hardware upgrades. Now I don't have a lot time for system maintance going forward so I am trying to figure out the most efficent way to set this up and this is where I need you help, thoughts and feedback. I want to be able to login at any client and have the same services available, desktop and etc. Get email, browse the web, use the standard office programs and of course play some games. Now for the maintance issue, I am tired of updating 3 systems everytime a patch is issued, or I want to upgrade a program. So I am beginning to sound like I would be an ideal canidiate for a "fat server", thin client set up. Now I am wonder if there would be any gains in this senerio. A dual processor server, 256mb of memory, maybe a scsi hard (cost will drive this decision). Set up the server to provide x service, home dir's and etc to the clients. Then do the clients with either bootable network cards, or a minimmum install(base only, no X) of Linux on the local hard drive(not sure what would work better here) and use the xserver, fonts server from the server. I really want to weigh the pros and cons of such a setup before tackling this so I can plan it out. Some questions, would having the server provide x take any load off the client when running intensive applications? Can I set up x on the server so it uses different xf86config files for each client, monitors and video cards will most likely be different, or am I back to clients. If I want to play games like Q3 and SOF, can I install one set of binaries on the server and have 2 or more clients playing 2 seperate games without stepping on each other, or should each client have it's own install. I am guessing that if I want sound, usb and such on each client I would be best with linux on those machines, since I don't see how the server could provide those services for the client. Software wise I like to set up a group calander program that I can update my visor to with my appointments, expose certian appointments for my wife to view, have her be able to enter information for me to see and accept into my scheduler, plus have the kids have there own. Any recommendations on such a program? OK I have gone on long enough, any thoughts from you guys? Thanks, Jerry S.

[expert] login manager background
Hi, Can anyone help me this is a little long but bare with me (please!)... When login manager loads and presents the login screen the background behind it is configurable once you login (assuming KDE) via the control centre and then system/login manager. Now there seems to be a bug coz when I try to change the login manager background, it accepts my changes but loses them when I leave the configuration screen. So: a) has anyone else experienced this b) does anyone know where this background info is stored. Is there a config file I could vi? Thanks and Merry Christmas to you all. helpa __ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup
[expert] Uh-oh. Helixcode has not exactly improved my Foot menu...
In a fit of Xmas Cheer I have installed Helixcode's GNOME over a box running a schweet 7.2 system, via the Lynx go-gnome technique. The GNOME foot menu is now a mess. Helixcode has created a bunch of duplicate and mostly redundant menus. The mdk MenuDrake sees system menus only. The Helixcode menu util sees only it's menus. Ne'er the twain shall meet. So I can go in with vim and edit all menus by hand back to sanity, but if any lister had a better (ie, easier) solution, I'd be most appreciative. -- Simon Cousins [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things." - Robert A. Re: [expert] XFree86 memory leak?
Seriously, I think I would go back to using 3.3.6 as opposed to 4.0.1. It doesn't appear that they've gotten "all" the bugs out yet. [expert] XFree86-4.0.2
Hello List, I got 4.0.2 from XFree86.org and am trying to get it to run with LM 7.2, 2.2.17-21mdk kernel and the SiS6326 chip. It needs Option sw_cursor to get rid of the white square mouse pointer but when I boot I get a black screen with the outline of the login gui but no icons or fonts. I tried the backup xdm and got a blue screen but the same blank outline gui. When I ctrl-alt-F1, log in and go ctrl-alt-F7 I get the normal login screen and can log in as root or user, but I can't log out - it reverts to the outline login screen. If I log in this way, things work but there are corruptions in some gui interfaces and strange behaviour around the border of a term when using fetchmail, mutt etc. X -version says I am running 4.0.2. I have read the discussion about the font path set to unix/-1 but I used xf86config to configure X and the font paths are in /etc/X11/XF86Config. It almost seems like the 24 bit color problem, but I'm using 16bit. /var/log/XFree86.0.log says (EE) SIS(0):video password not initialize but I don't think that's the problem. Anyone able to help sort this out? I have had no success in the past with reporting problems to XFree86.org. Of course, I can always go back to 4.0.1.
