[expert] LM 8.0 - KDE, fonts anti-aliasing

2001-06-13 Thread Frederic Soulier

Hello,

I had a lot of problem recently after importing windows font without
doing a strong verification... ok, a stupid mistake here :)
Basically I couldn't launch KDE as a normal user with anti-aliasing
turned on (was still ok for root with anti-aliasing though).

To sort of cure the pbm I went to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/
and deleted all the fonts then I re-imported all the windows fonts
using the strong verification option.
I can now launch KDE as a normal user with anti-aliasing but during
the KDE startup kwrited crashes all the time.

Any idea why it crashes?
Also how can I check which windows fonts were causing trouble?

Cheers,
Fred

[expert] LM 8.0 - Proxy client to access MS Proxy on W2000 Server

2001-06-13 Thread Frederic Soulier

Hello,

We have this W2000 Server at the office with MS Proxy Server 2.0 on it
On our workstations, we have a MS Proxy Client (I can't remember if it's
winsock or something.. will check).

In LM 8.0, I can access the Proxy Server from Netscape/Mozilla 0.9.1 for
HTTP request but I can't get any SMTP or POP3 traffic to go through.
It seems I need a Proxy Client in LM 8.0 to do that.

Is there such beast in LM 8.0?

Also if I was to install a Proxy Server, Squid, on a linux box, would I
be able to get the SMTP and POP3 traffic through as well?

Cheers,
Fred

Use DrakFont to uninstall any font you add.
In mandrake 8, DrakFont has a problem with windows fonts.
You must use MandrakeUpdate to update it.
Then reimport windows fonts with strong verification.
Maybe it helps.
Salu2,
Oscar.

[expert] Graphical printouts - unwanted!

This is odd; here is my setup: We have an HP IIIsi printer on a

background is printed, so it's a mess. Any ideas how to get a decent
clean printout?

Thanks, -turgut

[expert] Problem IP Address and apache

2001-06-13 Thread pgoeldi

Hi all,

I just installed LM 8 and basically it's great. But there are some problems
I could not solve yet even searching in all possible archives and support
sites.

My environment:
ADSL Router (Zyxel) which connects to the wan and, as dhcp server, leases
ip addresses to our little lan consisting of two macs and my linux-box. the
lan
is connected by an ethernet hub.

problem:
When booting the linux box, it says no ip-address found, starting httpd
fails
(beginning with mod_perl, then all other apache-thinghs, and the ftp-deamon
as well).
Trying to start the apache manually after booting fails.

facts:
the two macs have no problems to get their ip-addresses from the
dhcp-server/
router.
silly: i can access websites with the browser with no problem, which means
that
my machine knows the ip's of the name servers of my isp, and this
information
comes from the router/dhcp-server as well.

anyone a good idea?

cheers
peter

Hi,

My guess is that you are not starting ssh with the -X flag. This X11
forwarding.
Possible other problems, the DISPLAY environment variable is not
correctly set (although it should be in an xterm). If this is the case,
assuming that you only have one X11 server running on one monitor, try
export DISPLAY=:0.

Elsewise, I think I need more information to come up with more useless
ideas :-)

Re: [expert] Poor OpenGL performance in LM 8.0

2001-06-13 Thread Nathan Callahan

Don't know what causing tuxracer to not report FPS correctly, but I
think know what the problem with the Radeon is.

The XF86 version that comes with LM8 does not support DRI (Direct
Rendering Infrastructure) on the radeon. You will have to obtain a new
version of XF86 either from the DRI project (dri.sourceforge.net) or I
believe that XF86-4.1.0 includes radeon DRI support.

One gotcha is that you need agp support enabled in the kernel (either
through compile in, or module load) before the radeon driver is loaded
by XF86, or it won't work. Otherwise the installation instructions on
the DRI homepage worked fine for me.

Hope this helps.

What confuses me is that I set the FPS display on in Tuxracer and it

between 50 and 90 FPS. What I see is only about 1 or 2 FPS.

When I run Tuxkart, the load up info tells me that Utah GLX is running
 in
indirect mode. Is this the problem?

 My Hardware is:
 Radeon 32MB DDR

 I'm running XFree86 4.0.3 with 'Experimental 3D support.'

Is there a simple fix for this? If not, can anyone point out a FAQ.

[expert] 3com 3c90x

2001-06-13 Thread Juha O Mustajarvi

Hello, this seems to have been subject to quite a lot of messages
lately, and yes, i've read a bunch of them.

And while they've all been helpful in many ways, my actual problem
remains still.

My mandrake 8.0 has 3Com Fast Etherlink XL PCI 10/100 adapter, and is
connected through DHCP. And the problem is, that the drivers for the
adapter don't seem to work.

Upon booting, the following is displayed (may be little inaccurate,
since the screen sort of flashes by):

Bringing up interface eth0
3c90x.0.gz has parameter switchdelay max min
[FAILED]

The driver's readme identifies the switchdelay option as disabled by
default. I tried to set it manually in modules.conf as

options 3c90x switchdelay=1

and received a slightly different error (boot time) saying

unknown parameter 'M' for switchdelay
insmod failed

The problem can't reside in the connection itself, 'cos setting the
connection manually with linuxconf doesn't work while connecting a w2k
using dhcp works. I've also tried to reinstall the driver with
rpm, and to recompile it from the source codes but both result in a
screenful of various error messages from gcc / kgcc.

If anybody could give me any hints on how i could fix this problem, i'd
be really grateful (it's takem me three weeks by now, and i'm on the
verge of switching back w or going back to store to get another
adapter..). Thanks.

[expert] Problem upgrading (and relatedl problems) to Mandrake 8.0

2001-06-13 Thread bass

hi, I'm currently using Mandrake 7.0, and trying to upgrade my kernel to 2.4.5

A quick (but not that elegant) fix might be to just simply install Mandrake
8.0,
and choose upgrade, but that would entail having to deal with the installation
of a host of packages all over again - most of which i do not need.

My current problem now can be summed up in two words - RPM problem,
and mkinitrd Source Tarball problem.

mkinitrd is one of the packages to be upgraded, as mentioned in
Documentation/Changes. I did download an rpm for that, but my
present version of RPM 3.0.3 (which came with Mandrake 7.0) just
refuses to work, complaining about 'only working with major
version numbers = 3'. (Renaming the rpm does not work btw)

I tried upgrading rpm using the rpm-4.0-26mdk.i586.rpm given in the
Mandrake 8.0 CD, but even that, rpm complains about, once again giving
me the 'version number problem'

So i am forced to have to search for the source tarball for mkinitrd
in order to avoid all this rpm trouble. Problem is, i've searched
just about everywhere, but can't find it.

Does anybody know of a solution for me?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[expert] extracting a single file from within an rpm

2001-06-13 Thread Scott, Rob

Hi, does anyone know how to (or even if it's possible) to extract a single
file from within an rpm?
Reason being I wish to install xine but it requires libXv.so.1 . A quick
search on rpmfind reveals it to be in XFree86-libs-4.1.0-3mdk.i586.rpm from
Mandrake cooker I don't want to have to risk breaking a rock solid system
by upgrading unless I really have to. Ok I admit the idea of just putting
the one file may not work at all but I guess it's worth a try.
If this is not possible any recommendations for windows avi compatible
players.

2001-06-13 Thread Praedor S. Tempus

This is how I do it...force of habit:
Open a konsole or xterm, go to superuser, run drakfont. From that point, it
is pretty self-explanatory with the nice GUI. You will select the fonts you
want, if not all of them. You can go with normal or strong verification -
the strong verification is safer/better but I have done normal too.

It will install the fonts and they will henceforth be available to you.

ways
under Win98).

civileme wrote:

What driver module do you use? Can you load 3c90x?
I get the same problem as Juha when I try to load it.
3c59x loads fine but gets me nowhere (no network connection)

One will run with dchp but not with dhcpcd, only with
dhcp-client. The others seem to be allergic to dhcp.

 3C905Bs have no troubles whatsoever.

Are your 3C905Bs combos (i.e. 3C905B-Combo), and if so

Re: [expert] How to make sure md5ums on download ISOs are ok

2001-06-13 Thread Randy Kramer

Ron,

Found this thread in the archives, thought you might be able to help me.

Main question: If md5sum /dev/cdrom doesn't work, can I recreate the iso
file (in Linux or Windows (Easy CD Creator)) and get a reliable MD5
checksum?

Aside: When I run md5sum /dev/cdrom the cdrom spins for a little while
(2 minutes?) and then I get Input/output error -- any hints?

Background: I bought some game CDs and the game fails during one phase
of play. The manufacturer is about to say that my CDs must be bad (no
scratches, no fingerprints, have had the game for 1 1/2 years with the
same problem in two different machines). I want to send him the md5
checksums and have him tell me whether they are right or wrong (before I
consider paying $10 each for replacement disks). (Along with
information on how to generate an md5 checksum.)

Thanks for any help you can offer.

PS: Shortly I will probably run some experiments -- burn a CD from an
ISO, recreate the ISO from the CD, then compare the checksums, so maybe
in a few hours (or days) I'll know the answer.

No, don't! Just use rsync co copy it down again. In this mode rsync
 only does a patch-in-place operation.

  The question i
have is: How can I use this md5 checksum to check an iso once it is burnt
to CD? Some programs seem to add padding which makes them fail their own
check facility - xcdroast was one.

 md5sum /dev/cdrom(yes, it works!)

The iso file from which the CD was created must show the same md5sum.

RE: [expert] WYSIWIG HTML Editors

2001-06-13 Thread David Joham

Hello George,

I'm not much of a WYSIWYG HTML programmer, I have taken a look at coffecup.
Its available for both Windows and Linux and may be close to what you're
looking for. CoffeCup for Linux is available at www.coffeecup.com/linux

If you really would like your older editors, you may be able to get them to
run under WINE.

My personal favorite editor (although not WYSIWYG) is Quanta for KDE. You
can find it at quanta.sourceforge.net. I use it all the time and really like
its layout and design.

Best regards,

David

##

If I go to the ftp site I can't find the kernel patch. Does linux
Mandrake have a patch for this?

When I run I get the following as expected.

Does anyone know where I can get this patch? Has anyone ran this

 But with Linux-Mandrake 8.0, I have a small but
important problem in text mode. My screen is
flickering very bad and after some hours my eyes are
 always tired.

There are two possible solutions, but I couldn't do
 one of them:

 1) Changing refresh rate of VESA text mode, it runs in
 60Hz now.

 2) Disabling VESA and using normal 80x25 text mode.

First option will be better, since using VESA is
easier if you are a developer :)

In normal text mode (for example in DOS) my monitor is
running in 60Hz too, but it's not flickering...

 Any idea?

 Thanks.

 well thanks anyway

Have the same problem here, different notebook (IPC) but same chip and
same problem. Someone at MandrakeForum stated that one should not use

One thing though: cat /proc/interrupts tells me that both usb modules and
the sound modul use the same irq. I tried to disable the usb-port in BIOS

Next thing I'll try is changing kernel options and recompile.

Nope have never seen a combo. It is not unusual to find
hardware working under windows with a windows driver written by
the manufacturer. It doesn't mean a linux developer has seen
the device and been able to tweak a current driver for it.

But just for fun, why don't you visit a friendly local hacker
site and try playing with the MAC address on the card. If you
find all Zeroes or something similar it would not be surprising
at all. 3Com cards can all have their MAC addresses overwritten.

[expert] error in loading shared libraries ?? WHY???

HI,

I'm about to install WEBDB on mandrake 7.2.
I'm stuck..

bin/wdblsnr localhost 8088

and instead of executing it says:
bin/wdblsnr: error in loading shared libraries: libclntsh.so.1.0: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

I added the lib directory to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH env variable. But in the
directory there is no such file. There is a file libclntsh.so.1.0 but
libclntsh.so.1.0_* so there is an extra underscore. Does it mean something
or how can I decompress or whatever to do with it ??

If I simply copy error in loading shared libraries: libclntsh.so.1.0:

RE: [expert] error in loading shared libraries ?? WHY???

2001-06-13 Thread kapitany

Thanks, but it was not working...
I rerun ldconf and it says that
ldconfig: warning: /usr/local/webdb/webdb-2.2/lib/libclntsh.so.1.0_ is not a
shared library, skipping

And than I have the same error again;
bin/wdblsnr: error in loading shared libraries: libclntsh.so.1.0: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

So it seems that this is not a proper shared library. I downloaded from
Oracle web site. How can I recompile this shared library? Or where can I get
a real one?
Or does this _ in the end means that it should be decompressed or
something???

add $ORACLE_HOME/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf then rerun ldconfig as root

IIRC WebDB must be in a different $ORACLE_HOME from Oracle8i, make sure
that both $ORACLE_HOMEs are in the etc/ld.so.conf file

[expert] OpenOffice and StarOffice freeze system

2001-06-13 Thread Digital Wokan

I was looking to edit a spreadsheet in StarOffice, so I downloaded it
and proceeded to run the .bin file (after chmod +x of course). It
brought up the KDE window for the first next to click, but everything
was frozen. Mouse wouldn't move. Ctrl-Alt-Delete and Ctrl-Alt-Bksp did
nothing. I couldn't even get my KVM switch to let me use another
computer so I could see if this one would respond to pings. (KVM switch
controlled by buttons on its front and Scroll Lock on keyboard - neither
worked.)

Installed the OpenOffice 6.0.5 rpm from the Mandrake 8 CD. No
problems. CD'd to the /usr/lib/open... directory and then ran ./setup
as per the RPM's instructions. Same full lockup, but this time the
window was a couple of inches down and left from the desktop's corner.

Has anyone else seen this kind of problem?

hopefully, get it to load, or to try to fiddle with the card itself...

Well, i actually did get 3c90x to load.

By entering the following into /etc/modules.conf

alias eth0 3c90x
options 3c90x switchdelay={0,0}

(the second line seems odd considering the drivers readme, which states:

OPTION: switchdelay
Delays the driver initialiation by three seconds to allow slower
switches to respond to the NIC initialization

 0 Disabled [ Default ]
 1 Enabled

but it works)

and changing the line

Eth0Driver=3c59x

in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/draknet_conf

to

Eth0Driver=3c90x

Not that it'd been of much use, since now the connection just fails
without any error visible error messages...

[expert] two problems. one with kcontrol one with shared memory usage

2001-06-13 Thread Orkunt Sabuncu

Hi folks,

I have just installed LM8.0 on my PC. It can be really slow (P 200 48mb
ram) compared to newer PCs but I was really expecting better performance
from LM8.0.

I am using KDE as a desktop manager. when i use top i see that nearly all of
the ram is used. At first I thought it is in fact sharing the memory but
using top also says 0Kb for shared memory usage. I think it is quite
strange.

related with this when i open a application lets say konsole and close it,
the next time i open it i expect it loads faster but in fact it is not. It
waits just as the first opening maybe more. This is quite related with
shared memory usage i think. What are ur comments, I know KDE things are
resource eaters but as i said i amexpecting more from it in terms of
performance.

This is the first problem, the second one happened after i changed font
settings in KDE control application. I installed tahoma windows font and
set it to all font places where i see helvetica in Kcontrol. It worked. But
maybe related maybe not after that i cannot run KDE control application from
panel. It gives SIGSEGV signal , but from terminal it works ok.. strange.. I
searched some logs (i think it was .xsessionerrors log); there were lines
related with kcontrol saying DCOP communication error.

I need help with these problems, thanks in advance...

Orkunt Sabuncu

Hello, this seems to have been subject to quite a lot of
messages lately, and yes, i've read a bunch of them.

And while they've all been helpful in many ways, my actual
 problem remains still.

My mandrake 8.0 has 3Com Fast Etherlink XL PCI 10/100 adapter,
and is connected through DHCP. And the problem is, that the
drivers for the adapter don't seem to work.

Upon booting, the following is displayed (may be little
inaccurate, since the screen sort of flashes by):

 Bringing up interface eth0
3c90x.0.gz has parameter switchdelay max min
 [FAILED]

The driver's readme identifies the switchdelay option as
disabled by default. I tried to set it manually in
 modules.conf as

 options 3c90x switchdelay=1

and received a slightly different error (boot time) saying

 unknown parameter 'M' for switchdelay
 insmod failed

The problem can't reside in the connection itself, 'cos
setting the connection manually with linuxconf doesn't work
while connecting a w2k using dhcp works. I've also tried to
reinstall the driver with rpm, and to recompile it from the
source codes but both result in a screenful of various error
 messages from gcc / kgcc.

If anybody could give me any hints on how i could fix this
problem, i'd be really grateful (it's takem me three weeks by
now, and i'm on the verge of switching back w or going back to
store to get another adapter..). Thanks.

I have three of those cards, identical in model number and
decignation 3C905C types.

All three run like champs under 8.0 with fixed IPs

One will run with dchp but not with dhcpcd, only with
dhcp-client. The others seem to be allergic to dhcp.

3C905Bs have no troubles whatsoever.

[newbie] X 4.x freezes on Neomagic

2001-06-13 Thread Nico Krzebek

Has anyone else experienced spontanteous freezes under XFree86 4.x with an
Neomagic chipset? I've tried out almost all 4.x releases. The last one was
4.1.0. At first I thought it was a KDE problem because I'm still able to move
the mouse pointer but WindowMaker produced the same result, it only took
somewhat longer than usual.

3.3.6 works ok though...

I have a ThinkPad 570, Neomagic 256AV, 1024x768x16bpp, 192MB RAM, 20GB HD.

Grateful for any advice,
Nico

[expert] strange problem with Bind.... on Mdk 7.2

2001-06-13 Thread Franki

Hi everyone,,,

I am having a little problem with Bind, which is now set up for our domain
names and is seconded by our isp's dns,,

I was sucessful with the main domain deligation, and got confiring results
with a whois... BUT!!

for many of the subdomains that I created, it works correctly and we get the
correct IP from any connection...

but for the domain and subdomains that existed before we did this, they are
still coming up with their old IP address.

I was under the impression that if a domain name was deligated to a dns
server, then all subbdomains will be quiered from that dns server as well,,
but that doesn't appear to be the case since if you log into the dns server
directly, it is giving the correct new IP address (not from /etc/hosts
either), but it isn't updating the other dns's around with the new info...
for only two of the subdomains, the rest work fine... (the two that don't
work, were in existance before we setup this server, they were using other
ISP's DNS servers, and I am wondering if thats the reason they are not
resolving correctly..

I am alittle lost here, this seemed simple to set up, and for the most part
it was, but the things that got me, where this problem and the zone serial
number, which is supposed to be newer then any others, so I have it set as:
200106114

Have I done that correctly??

any help would be seriously appreciated as I am spending way to much time
talking to the isp help desk only to discover that they seem to know less
then I do...

kindest regards
