Welcome back and happy holidays to you. Very sorry to hear you got laid off.
For what it is worth I just started playing with the recently released
Mandrake Security product mandrake released. I'm in the process of a full
blown attack on it right now to see how it stands up. Looks VERY nice, very
similar to the original, but more features and I'm sure more secure. A chance
you will get hired back?

1. I will be returning to the lists. I will have an email address that
can handle list level traffic.

2. All of you are desperately needed to complete the push to get
Mandrakesoft on a self-sustaining level.

For the second one, here is the real story:

Mandrakesoft started on a shoestring and a hope, originally as a
spare-time project for one person. It was immensely popular from
inception and soon MADE A PROFIT.

Then arrived the venture capitalists

They invested monies but wanted an international team of executives to
manage the company. Such a team was acquired.

Under that team, the expenses went up about 400% without a concomitant
increase in revenue. The direction was modified from a linux
distributor to an internet education company with a hook to linux.

The soundness of that idea was never proven, as the dot.com bubble
burst and investors worldwide went into full retreat. For Mandrakesoft
this was a curse and a blessing. The curse was the negative cash
position and high burn rate and the blessing was a return to being a
linux company.

Mandrakesoft has made huge strides in bringing revenue up to meet
expenses and in cutting expenses. They tended to trust the word of
others which has made their forecasts look overly optimistic several
times.

But now the break-even point, in the worst-case scenario, is in sight
and in a few months. The short term still requires more cash than they
have now, to get out that next release.

In that next release will be a special piece of software I am
contributing. With little to do since my layoff, I have designed a
semi-intelligent linux binary installer that can handle most of what you
are able to download. It even has hooks to look for things like WineX
and to attempt to install windows executables if you have an emulator
for them.

But if you want to see that next release, consider a club membership or
giving club memberships as Christmas gifts or buying stock at
approximately the right price. (BTW, MIcrosoft stock which sells at
Like $52 /share has 8 billion shares outstanding on a company that
earns $25 billion a year in revenue BEFORE expenses-- I call that a
heavily watered stock) Mandrakesoft stock is selling for what the
company is probably worth. Remember its assets are PEOPLE and their
products. People like Pixel and Gael Duval and Denis Havlik and
Guillaume Cottenceau make the product and the company what it is.
Mandrake also has a hidden asset in the loyalty of contributors, And
they are finally selling the right way--software is free if you want it
and rather expensive if you expect extensive support.

So anyway, expect to see me return to the lists now that I have an email
that will handle it without quota problems and (I hope) without any more
crack attacks or DDOSes which is what originally set me to dropping my
mailserver and forwarding to a hidden webmail host.

WB.

I just ordered a few boxes for resale and a request for warrants which is
about what I can do for the immediate term.

Near term, demand generation is probably the key.

It's past time for a Mandrake 9.0 party. We keep an image on the LAN and we
might snag a few folks to come in and get the GPL version.

We are pretty good at installations which we can offer as a service including
stuff like phpGroupWare and osCommerce.

Does anyone have a litany of Mandrake services which might encourage
businesses to bite?

Right on. How many versions of mdk have we all

In my case it worked (after much trouble-shooting) after I did the following:

1. Turn off arts sound server (if you're using KDE)
2. Instead of using alsa drivers, use OSS (the ones that come with distro kernel)

By the way, they're up to v1.41 now, but they broke multiplayer for versions 1.4 and
above. The must be using a "chatty" protocol which just adds lag...

Hi there,

I wish I had a dollar, (accounting for the current rate of inflation),
for every time I've seen this need addressed in these lists. Doesn't
anyone read the archives any more? ;)

with this thought in mind I've saved this message as a template on my
system and will send it to the list probably once a week so in case
anyone misses the post it will show up again and again and again on the
list for those poor souls that missed it the previous time it was
posted. Almost as many times as the question, "where can I get the Java
plugins for Mozilla/Netscape...etc...

anyway...if you're needing the java plugin for Netscape, or Mozilla go
follow the link below and you'll be able to download and install the
java plugin. And by the way...this does not require the download and
install of Sun's JDK or JRE packages. This is a seperate "browser" plugin.

IMPORTANT NOTE: you Must be root user when you do this or the plugin
will NOT install.

Stef,

Why don't you try going to http://www.opensound.com/ and downloading the
trial version of their commercial OSS sound drivers. If it works OK for
you, then you might consider purchasing a permanent license from them
like I did. I found great inconsistencies in performance and
functionality across all the sound drivers that are supplied with the
kernel. As a result, it affected how well many of my friends could make
recordings of stuff they were playing back. I could do it with my
aureal drivers, but many could not duplicate my results. I have known
about 4front for a long time and gave them a try.

4Front OSS drivers provide a consistently performing interface across a
wide range of sound cards. The feature that really sold me was the
loopback recording functionality. This allows just about anyone to use
their soundcard to record incoming sound streams.

The support from 4front is really good. Even if youre using the trial
license, they will make sure that it gets working for you if you
encounter any problems.

Make a back up of your modules.conf if you don't already have one before
you install.

Have you tried 4front Technologies' Open Sound System driver? You have
to buy a license (doesn't cost much) but it's well worth it. There's a
trial version you can download to see if it's going to work for you. Go

They're workin' on it. :-)

You may want to read this since the support is still being built into the
kernel:

http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0210.0/2093.html

and a link to Andy McFadden's cd-recordable FAQ that may help somewhat:

http://linux-ve.net/MyLDP/FAQ/cd-record-faq/wholefaq.html

I wonder if the kernel team has decided to call the next one 2.6 or 3.0. I've
seen a few jokes about it but nothing concrete.

Yes, damnit, I got kaffe.
Yesterday I had this problem, downloaded the sun jre, rpm claimed I
already had the 1.4.1 and so I deleted (without further investigation)
what I had just downloaded. Now I'm downloading again ;)

thanks for the help :)

Re: [expert] problems with java

2002-12-23 Thread PlugHead
Most likely, you're using Kaffe, the JRE that Mandrake installs by default
(you can verify this by typing 'java -version'.) It doesn't support the -X
options (which are non-standard anyhow), or Swing (I think) which most java
applications (as opposed to applets) need these days.

Download and install Java from sun at java.sun.com.

Re: [expert] KDE and wine--Sound?

2002-12-23 Thread PlugHead
Hmmm. I meant soundwrapper (which I tried both with the winex command and
wineserver--which I assume actually runs the program...) Soundwrapper, btw,
does work for other non-KDE apps, like Doom Legacy.

I just tried "artswrapper", and it doesn't seem to be doing anything useful.
Mostly it just complains that artsd is already running. :)

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

I would like to upgrade php to version 4.2.3. on Mandrake Linux 8.1

I think the best way is:

uninstalling any modules (mysql, gd...) 4.0.6
uninstalling php 4.0.6
installing php 4.2.3
installing any additionnal modules version 4.2.3

Anyone can confirm this?

Thanks!

Praedor - it works fine here, under Mandrake v8.2... If you can't get it to
work under Linux, try installing it under WineX - it works great there too.

Re: [expert] ksirc changing ircname

2002-12-23 Thread Jack Coates
sirc is a pretty wack client, as I believe the IRC kiddies would term it
:-) I used to have a pretty nifty set up where you could go to a webpage
which would run JTA with the SSH plugin and log you in as a special user
whose shell was a script that ran sirc and connected to the ircd at
localhost. Voila, instant encrypted IRC.

Unfortunately sirc was quite ill-behaved under such circumstances. It
and JTA kept disagreeing about window size and fonts and terminal
emulation. I tried to get BitchX going instead without success, and then
everyone switched to IM so I just turned it off. Still, the JTA trick is
a nice one to remember if you want to present a console app.

[expert] return to castle wolfenstein

Does anyone have a functional linux version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein?
I just recently picked it up, upgraded the linux binary to 1.33, but it
doesn't work. I can get to the intro screen and settings with sound OK but
as soon as I try to start the actual game, the screen goes black and it
appears to hang up when doing the sound initialization.

I have tried starting it with artsdsp as well but this kills all sound (but
allows the game to start to be played in silence.

What is the magic trick to getting this linux game to run under linux? Or
perhaps under Mandrake 8.2 to be more specific? I have also tried running it
from windowmaker (instead of KDE) but same thing. Sound initialization
freezes (no error messages anywhere that I can find).

hi jack

i believe it is a front end yes, when it starts it says welcome to sirc or
similar, i looked at xchat, this gives me the option to set ircname and
ircuser before i connect, ksirc allows you to set 'realname' only
with xchat i logon and i'm shown as i wish, this applies to all servers i log
on to, if i use /set ircname etc this only takes efect on my next connection,
anyway i make sure i'm not shown as my local user and i'm happier

[expert] KDE 3.1 RC5 Konqueror problems

2002-12-23 Thread Brendan
Updated from stock Mandrake 9.0 KDE rpms --> KDE 3.1 RC5 from texstar
(http://www.pclinuxonline.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4114).

I even:
mv $HOME/.kde $HOME/.kde-old

Install went fine. Booting up. I'm digging it. Only problems:

Konqueror, in file browse/management/preview mode will hang, no matter what.
It displays the files, and then hangs hard. No clicks are reflected in the
window. I can kill it, but it happens every time.

Web Browsing mode works great, but anytime I switch to displaying files (even
without switching the mode), it hangs. No exceptions.

Using the stock .kde dir it created on boot.

Any ideas? This is killing my vibe.

Brendan

Eye-candy is a good thing on a login screen.
How would one go about doing this?

Ockham's solution at this point would probably be to switch MDK9 to GDM
instead of KDM, so that the instructions will match RedHat.

Besides, GDM is better eye-candy :-)

So far, 9.0 has been great for me except for this annoyance.

Try placing the following line in your /etc/modules.conf file:

alias sound-slot-0 cs46xx

Works here.

Ockham's solution at this point would probably be to switch MDK9 to GDM
instead of KDM, so that the instructions will match RedHat.

Besides, GDM is better eye-candy :-)

soundwrapper is the same thing, but for desktop environments that don't
load ARTS, which is a KDE-only thing. soundwrapper works with esd and
alsa in my experience, though nothing but artswrapper can make Quake3
play on my 815-based laptop, and even then the experience really sucks
:-( Hopefully my next employer will have the foresight to equip my

Heck, I haven't even touched the new distro or the new GUI -- but I do
have to work on a number of RH 7.x servers, and man do I miss urpmi. I
also think Mandrake RPMs are generally better put together. That is,
less likely to be broken and more likely to have the configure options I

[expert] Monitors

2002-12-23 Thread Michal 'hramrach' Suchanek
Hi all

I'd like to buy a monitor and I do not have any idea where to look for
some information about the experience of other users.
So far I found a Czech site where GNU/Linux users listed their opinions
about a few standard monitor types (and many exotic ones). I also tried
to google and found a few reviews of older monitor models.

I got inspired by the thread on hardrives a few days ago so I ask here.

I have tried to make it working as it was in 8.2.
In 8.2 it was simply to add the following line to modules.conf:

alias sound-slot-0 cs4232

Now, this does not work anymore. Sndconfig (from a getty) takes an
awfull time just to recognize something that it calls "Crystal Sound
4232 GAME2 (never saw this "GAME" stuff) and, anyway, it is unable to
produce sound.

When I try to use Arts in KDE, it tells that I should use artswrapper...
but I do not know how to do nor what to do for this.

Any help would be really apreciated.

You're trying to link statically to the C-library and the linker fails because
it can't find libc.a to link against.
"urpmf libc.a" gives a few incorrect hits, but it also shows us the correct
one:
glibc-static-devel
so "urpmi glibc-static-devel" should solve your problem:

Narfi.

[expert] Using Chooser in kdmrc

2002-12-23 Thread Jan Wilson
At our junior college, we are using Mandrake 9.0 with LTSP 3. We just
got 5 new servers, three for the lab and two elsewhere on the campus.

The problem: most LTSP people are using RedHat, and the instructions
I received for using multiple servers included adding this line to kdmrc:

Chooser=/etc/X11/xdm/pretty-chooser

The pretty-chooser is a script that sets up a nicer dialog box and
then does
exec /etc/X11/xdm/chooser $*

The problem is that /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc appears to use Greeter
where RedHat uses Chooser, and I have been unable to figure out how to
get X to allow choosing from multiple servers on Mdk 9.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

John,
On my system I have a Samsung dvd/cdrw combo that seems to be working OK. On
my system the drive is on the second IDE controller as a master, with another
cd reader on the same channel as a slave. Due to some incorrect settings with
an on board Promise raid controller my dvd/cdrw is detected by Linux as
/dev/hdg on the "ide side" of things. Anyway, devfs treats it this way in
lilo.conf:

image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hde1
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="quiet devfs=mount hdg=ide-scsi"
vga=788

Doing a ls -la on dev/scd0 returns the following:

/dev/scd0 -> scsi/host0/bus0/target6/lun0/cd

I created a link in /dev for the dvd side that looks like this:

/dev/dvd -> scsi/host0/bus0/target6/lun0/cd

cdrecord -scanbus returns:
Using libscg version 'schily-0.6'
scsibus0:
0,0,0 0) *
0,1,0 1) *
0,2,0 2) *
0,3,0 3) *
0,4,0 4) *
0,5,0 5) *
0,6,0 6) 'SAMSUNG ' 'CDRW/DVD SM-332B' 'T403' Removable CD-ROM
0,7,0 7) *

To enable DMA on the drive I do:

hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdg

On my system this makes dvd playback smoother

I do not use supermount, so my fstab entry for the drive looks like this:

/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdburn auto
user,iocharset=iso8859-1,exec,codepage=850,ro,noauto 0 0

Hope the above gibberish is of some help to you.

Jim

By "soundwrapper" I take it you mean artswrapper? If so, I would think that
running a wine/winex app would merely require that you prepend the wine
command with artswrapper:

"artswrapper winex "

Have you tried this already?

Re: [expert] LILO and switching hard drives

Anthony,

This may seem trivial ... but I did it so I know it's possible. I
left the second drive with the jumper on master when it should have been
slave... Did the same thing you are reporting.

[expert] LILO and switching hard drives

2002-12-23 Thread Anthony
I"m having some lilo troubles. I'm trying to switch out a hard drive and
replace it with another one. However when I do this, lilo gives me an
error on boot "L 01 01 01" etc with 01's going on forever down the
screen until I hit reboot.

The hard drive I'm swapping out (/dev/hdc) doesn't have any Linux stuff
on it, and I only use it for storage. Windows is installed on it's own
hard drive (/dev/hda) and linux is on it's own hard drive as well
(/dev/sda). The MBR is on /dev/hda. So I'm not seeing how switching out
my hard drive would affect lilo at all. I"ve tried rerunning the lilo
command, but doesn't help any. So to get to Linux or Windows, I have to
use a bootdisk and then I can see and write to the new hard drive with
no problems. Any suggestions on what's wrong or what I need to do to
make Lilo work?

Thanks,
Anthony
