Re: [expert] RPM screwed and worthless

2003-01-17 Thread James Sparenberg
Praedor check for any __dbxx files in /var/lib/rpm. and then remove
them.. and then try the rebuild... if this doesn't work,

You can do what I had to once. rpm -ivh rpmxxx.rpm --replacepkgs IF
(and this is possible) you can't get rpm to re-install itself.. (and
this is dirty) I once did an rpm -e on rpm it'self... (don't ask to long
awake and too little coffee) So what I did was copy rpm from another box
to my home directory and do /home/james/rpm rpm..rpm --replacepkgs.
the replace pkgs switch means overwrite new even if it's already there.

Chose define sources and remove the old updates source and start all
over again... sometimes it needs this... Also make sure that in
/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg and make sure that everything related to that site
is gone. Finally chose another site than the one you used before. This
will ensure that any corrupted file from before doesn't get re-used.
This may not be the "right" way but it's worked for me.

[expert] ML9.0:are services fam, portmap and xinetd necessary on a stand-alone desktop computer

2003-01-17 Thread vatbier
Mandrake Linux 9.0 here.
Are services fam, portmap and xinetd necessary on a stand-alone desktop
computer connected to the internet just for surfing, reading mails,
newsgroups? No printer is connected (cups is not installed).
Does Konqueror (KDE 3.0.3) really need fam (and portmap) or is it just
non-essential, just for the fun to see a file grow as it is being
downloaded?
What programs use and/or need fam? (I don't have NFS mounteddirectories)
What programs use and/or need portmap? (I don't have RPC servers (NFS,
NIS,... ) running I think)
Is xinetd necessary? Are only servers listed in /etc/xinetd.d/
used/started by xinetd? If I use none of these servers is it safe to
stop xinetd?
(/etc/xinetd.d/cvs is to setup a cvs server, correct? it isn't needed
for the command "cvs checkout" to download a source repository)

vatbier

After I wrote the above I found this:

Hi,
the reasoning behind FAM is to keep CPU resources low for applications
that want reaction on file changes.
The need for this is not given when only one application is looking
for changes in a local directory: it can do polling at reasonable
intervals. This is the case with Konqui when you disable FAM and
dnotify. As you say, you get perfect and reasonable behaviour.
The reason for FAM is given when
* there is a large number of applications looking for changes in the
same directory. FAM can centralize the actions needed, but notify each
application on a change.
This would be needed if KDE applications keep an eye on their config
files: Each KDE app would need to listen for changes to the file with
global KDE configuration, too. Here, the centralized approach of FAM is
helpful. You can specify FAM to only do STAT polling instead of using
kernel support (e.g. DNOTIFY).
* the directory to watch for changes is remotely mounted. As STATs over
NFS are slow, you create unneeded network loading. When the FAM daemon
is running on the server machine, the local FAM on the file server
looks for local changes (perhaps again using only STAT polling, but
that's fast when local). When a change is detected, the server FAM
notifies all watching client FAMs and these demultiplex the
notification for each application on their machine which are interested
in changes.
The centralized approach of FAM is needed here, too: Suppose 1000
clients doing STAT polling over NFS instead of using FAM...

How does FAM know about changes on local files?
There is either
- regular polling with STAT
- using some kernel support: imon (IRIX), dnotify (LINUX), kqueue (BSD?)

STAT polling every 0,5 seconds is mostly enough (configured when
compiling FAM). Disadvantage is a maximal delay of 0,5 s for events to
be delivered. STAT does not open the watched files are make a watched
dir its cwd, so there will never be any problems with "device busy".
Umounting devices is no problem with STAT polling.

If there are huge numbers of files to be watched, or you want immediatly
notified about changes, use kernel support:

* imon uses the /dev/imon pseudo device to get notifications from the
kernel. There's also a implementation for LINUX, but because of bad
shape of this code, it's not in any legacy kernel and AFAIK no
distribution has it build in. BTW, this is the IRIX way on SGI
machines.

* Don't know about kqueue (is this the right name for this service on
BSD?)

* dnotify on LINUX: This is in the legacy kernel. And that's the reason
all distributions seem to have FAM built to use it (SUSE, Red Hat,
Mandrake...).

Drawbacks of DNOTIFY:
- DNOTIFY forces FAM to open the directory which contains files to be
watched. This means problems with unmounting devices. Simple advice:
Kill the FAM daemon before unmounting ;-)
- DNOTIFY has no event delaying. For every write syscall to a watched
file, DNOTIFY produces immediatly a signal (for FAM). Worse, all
DNOTIFY applications (FAM, KDirWatch with dnotify support) use realtime
signals. These aren't merged by the kernel but queued and could lead to
overrunning this queue (thus, the additional need for SIGIO handler).
But this is needed as an attribute for the signal is the changed
directory file descriptor, and thus the application knows the directory
where the change happened. When using a normal signal for dnotify,
events could be missed: You would check all directories to be watched
with STAT for actual change. That's not r

Backup all the users files. Delete and replace the user, then copy all the
files back.

Just try to ensure he has the same UID #. If you can't then a recursive
"chown" may be of use once you are finished step one. I am not aware how this
could affect samba but it wouldn't if it wasn't running at the time.

etc.

Seems like there was a fix to allow you to do both types of Zip carts but I

I can still remember my first experience with Mandrake 7.0 (actually my first
Linux experience PERIOD), when I had to recompile the kernel to get bttv in
so my WinTV tuner card would work. :-)

[expert] troubles port forwarding

2003-01-17 Thread Mark Weaver
Hi list,

Today I decided I was going to make some changes to my home network. So, I
setup an old machine, tossed in two new nics, installed Mandrake 8.2 on it,
and once I got connectivity to the Internet, and the local lan I installed
and configured gShield.

Now, this is where it gets real interesting. After I read some and doodle
some more I managed to get things working. Or, so I thought. I've got all my
services running on a seperate machine. Mailserver, web server, etc... I've
got all the forwarding stuff defined in gShield, and in fact it appears that
at least traffic destined for the mailserver, 192.168.0.3 is indeed being
forwarded to that machine from the firewall, 192.168.0.1. Now, here's where
the rub comes in...ALL of the connections to the mailserver on port 25 are
being rejected. here's an example:

reject: RCPT from smtp.mandrake.com[63.209.80.248]: 554
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: Recipient address rejected: Relay access
denied; from=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

The above excerpt from the mail log is the only evidence that forwarding is
at least working on that part. Else, if it weren't then I don't think I'd
even see that much while tailing /var/log/mail/info.

Traffic for the webserver and any and all other services does not appear to
be getting forwarded to their destinations at all, however my primary
concern right now is the mail. That is #1 priority.

Anyone got any ideas? I've been working at this since 8 this morning and I
passed crabby about 600 miles ago and am fast approaching *hon? where'd I
put that damn Shotgun and those deer slugs...I'm gonna kill it!*

thanks,

Mark

Right, and once you get the top menu bar where you can see it, click on the
square icon in the upper right corner (a couple of times), it will go back

[expert] Latest updates (mainly kde) killed mouse dragging after suspend-resume; anybody else?

2003-01-17 Thread Peter Møller Neergaard
I am using Mandrake 9.0 on a Dell Inspiron laptop. Yesterday I used
MandrakeUpdate to update my system with the updates that has been
posted the last couple of days.

After the update I experienced the following problem: after suspending
and then resuming my laptop, I would no longer be able to drag a
window (i.e., click on the left button in the title bar and then move
the window or using meta-left). It worked before suspending so by
rebooting the machine I would again be able to drag windows (until the
first suspend, of course). This happened under both KDE and
WindowMaker.

It is very likely that this is caused by the updates. This morning I
downloaded the original RPMS (from the 9.0 distribution) and
downgraded to those RPMS. Now dragging no longer disappears after
disabling. The packages that I have reinstalled are the following:

[expert] Maxtor 120GB Drive doesn't work under 9.0

2003-01-17 Thread Bob [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello all,

After going through a couple drives, multiple motherboards, and different versions of
Mandrake,
I've now come to the conclusion that Mandrake 9.0 won't talk to my Maxtor 120GB drive.
 When I
try to use fdisk, it says "Unable to read /dev/hdc". Yet the same drive and
motherboard work
fine with a Mandrake 8.2 install.

This is a real bummer, as I've got two different 9.0 boxes all built and tweaked for
backup servers,
only to find that my big drives won't work with them.

Any fixes, patches, updates that fix this problem?

Bob

P.S. Please CC your reply to me, as I'm on the digest.

[expert] Problem of Lost User Name continues

2003-01-17 Thread Clif Caldwell
Continue to be unable to assign a lost name to a working user id. Name
was lost during samba and various other set-ups. Have attempted changing
all the password files in /etc and all the other files and then using
pmconv (pwconv...I can't remember) command. Have attempted to use
Linconf and Mandrake control center to remedy this. Have gone to command
line using useradd. Occasionally get an error like "ptmp or gtmp exists"
Have deleted these files assuming they would be recreated.
Alas nothing works. I need to assign a name because all of the suid
programs fail to work. This user can open a terminal and use su.But the
suid programs must require a name assigned to this id. This user is
listed in graphical login and the directories can be accessed through
samba etc... But open a terminal and it complains of no name or try to
run a higher permission program and it grinds to a halt.

I really don't want to delete this user and then have to rebuild all of
their config and personal stuff.

Any further ideas?

Thanks,
Clif

Thanks for the reply.
But I got this solved. It was a postfix problem. In setting it up to do

To fix it, I totally uninstalled postfix, then cleaned out the config

Without postfix, there is nothing to listen to port 25. The port wasn't
"closed"... there was just nothing holding it open.

Also, you could install Mdk 9.1b1, as it has Evo 1.2.1 ;)

It looks WONDERFUL!!! I just wasn't able to get it to forward packets. It
looks like it is locked down by default pretty tight. Once I figure out what
is blocking everything (shorewall or ipchains?) and get the rules
straightened out, I'll be good. I've just not had a chance to hammer on it.
I'm really looking forward to the docs and I see I have about 16 snf list
messages that just came through, so I'll go hang out there. :)

I'm getting these. I'm using my work address for this discussion.

I agree that port 25 is dead. The question is: Why & How?

The line in /etc/services is fine. It's uncommented.
smtp IS included in bastille-firewall.cfg
postfix "is" running.

Is postfix listening on eth0 ?

netstat -tl | grep smtp

I have no clue as to what closed that port! And I've rebooted a couple
of times. So what ever is doing it, is persistant!

BTW: I "can" get messages out. Just not in.

I think it varies according to which BIOS release is in the Zip drive, but I
have absolutely no proof that this is accurate. I base that assumption on the
fact that an older pre-2001 ADAPI zip disk had problems, and later on, using
the same distro, Mandrake 8.1, I put a brand-new out of the box Zip drive in
and it began functioning much better, including just about anyplace on the
IDE chain.

If we wanted to discuss hardware errors, we could, of course, examine the
history of my ATI All-in-Wonder TV card, which has never worked with Linux as
a TV tuner. (although I hear they are still working on that idea) No matter
how they fix it, the solution will be pretty complex, IMHO. ;-)

Yes, but as I told Vincent in e-mail a few days ago, Mandrake really works
pretty well. I've been running the KDE desktop as my primary workstation now
for over a year, and although it sometimes jitterbugs and tapdances its way
toward perdition just like Windoze, I can sit down and write a document or
spreadsheet with near-complete compatibility with MS-Office, handle e-mail
and read usenet all with a high degree of reliability and comfort. It just
doesn't get much better than that! 8-)

along those same lines ... what this doesn't prevent is msec changing

Ah. Thank you, deleting those files did the trick and I was subsequently able
to rebuild the database.

Thank you!

Sigh of relief.

I have found what appears to be a highly reliable means of wrecking your rpm
database. Do a search/query of your database using "rpm -qa|grep "
and terminate the process before it finishes. Using Ctrl-C works for this
nicely. After this, the database is hosed and requires rebuilding. This is
a bug as simply querying the database and terminating the query shouldn't
alter the database in any way. It should be a simple reading of the
database. This wrecking procedure worked in 8.2 and continues to work in
9.0.

[expert] 9.1b1 and devfs

2003-01-17 Thread Robert Goshko
Greetings all,

I still have an issue with devfs and my IBM MicroDrive under 9.1b1.

If devfs is mounted and I insert the MicroDrive (via PCMCIA CF adapter)
my CPU usage jumps to 100%. The devfsd process launches a process
drakupdate.fstab over and over and over.

Anyone know why this happens.

Without devfs mounted, it works no problem. 9.0 also "sufferes" from
the same problem (8.2 was fine).

Thanks.

I can't do justice to the totality of the underlying issue of your post,

however, I wonder if you know of the workaround when rpmdrake gets
corrupted from a bad shutdown or other:

rm any /var/lib/rpm/__db.00*
rpm --rebuilddb

Yes, I do BUT how does this differ from M$' "reboot your system"
approach?

Not trying to defend the status quo; just trying to publish a little
info that can be helpful to get someone going who has fallen into this
particular pit. There is, for me, a level of discomfort in using
Mandrake that, IMO, arises from the rate of change of a majority of the
components that constitute the distro, from kernel to filesystem. These
changes, driven not only by a need for improvement but also by
nearly-daily changes in the hardware it must support, appear to me to be
an inevitable part of the foreseeable future. The collateral damage of
these changes can only be addressed one-by-one and usually not in the
first, or with many, attempts. Not disputing the validity of your
complaint. Just not aware of any ready solution.

My point is that there is a LOT of Mdk code that "just works" when there
are no errors... let something happen outside that "perfect space" and
all hell breaks loose... To wit, all my updates over DSL went fine; doing
the exact same steps over a modem... (see original post)

I came to Linux (and Mandrake) years ago because things got fixed; now it
seems that everything is only being made to work in the "perfect space" in
order to pump out the most candy, anything else is thrown into the
"reboot" bucket... That's what I'm complaining about and that's what IMO
is the core problem with why Mdk is not getting market share as fast as it
could... Heck... the mere fact that I'm reconsidering my choice of distro
is deeply troubling to me -- I hate the idea going back to RH; but if RH
proves to me that their error recovery works, then it will mean that while
RH may not have all the eye-candy Mdk does, the choice will be between
which distro "sucks less" IMO:
Mdk -- too many errors that are ignored...
RH -- less candy; but it works...
Guess which will get picked at this rate...

I can't be the only one that thinks like this... If I am, then Mdk's
future is not assured IMO...

Pierre

urpmi also fails to function. The commands I used from
http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon mostly failed (the sites listed either don't
exist or refuse connections). I was TRYING to get sites closest to me, as
many US sites as possible but almost all failed.

Urpmi and rpm are dead and useless.

Thanks ET!

No strong compatability, reliability, installtion issues to watch for?
I've installed SCSI burners before, and they just dropped in, and
worked. I guess I'm hoping for the same from and IDE. (I've always
installed Yamahas in the past.. Been stable performers, never given me
any trouble..).

I'll see what I can find locally.

[expert] RPM screwed and worthless

2003-01-17 Thread Praedor Tempus Atrebates

Hash: SHA1

I don't know what happened or when but I cannot do anything with rpm except
make simple queries. VERY simple queries. And I cannot do a database
rebuild either. I have been trying to install/reinstall all the latest
Mandrake rpm-* rpms but I cannot do it. At first, I tried doing a simple rpm
query: "rpm -qa|grep rpm-" to see what rpm versions I had installed for rpm
itself. Nothing. Just sits there forever and never produces a result. If I
do "rpm -q rpm" I get a result. I then tried installing rpm-rebuilder and
rpm-get but it just sits there and wont do anything. Running an strace on it
it appears that rpm goes through some form of database query but then gets to
a point where all it does is timeout:

select(0, NULL, NULL, NULL, {1, 0}) = 0 (Timeout}

over and over and over forever.

If I try to do an rpm --rebuilddb, it does the same thing, just sits there
forever timing out.

How do I FORCE rpm to install an rpm regardless of whatever shape the rpm
database is? What if I delete the rpm database? What filename and where is
the database?

Help please. I'm screwed royal at this point. If one loses the ability to
use rpm on an rpm-dependent distro, one is HOSED.

But email pop3 are not working. When try to connect

I have tried to look at logs in /var/log/message and
in the administrative web interface, but have not
found anithing usefull solvfe this.

In "Office Traffic" option, I take the " leave all

pop3.

some ideas on how to fix this are wellcome.

Cheers Todd, excellent,

I figured it was a kinda generic run everything in here script, but
being completely knackered I couldnt figure out where (Duuh!), and it
would turn out to be embarrasingly obvious - note to self, stop
trying to figure it out when you're too tired to make coffee!

So the next question is, do I need it? May sound dumb but its
breaking KDE2 for users, but not root. In fact it doesnt seem to get
run by root at all. If I change $PATH back in root then spawn a new
shell, it doesnt get stuck at the beginning of $PATH. Yet root runs
KDE3 fine, because as far as I can tell /opt/kde3/bin/startkde3 sets
PATH="/opt/kde3/bin:$PATH" before running
/opt/kde3/bin/startkde which is what does the real business. So if I
lose kde3.sh wont the users be able to run both KDE3 and KDE2 without
KDE2 using all the wrong calls??

Also is it not possible to get KDE2 to access KDE3 libraries if it
needs them for stuff like k3b which looks fantastic :o), if not I've
got KDE3 to run it in I know!

Cheers again for any help

I already tried it. The result is the same. When I plug the micro vault, the
loop start. I can use the micro vault only if I rename drakupdate_fsta. Then,
will I have any problem if I rename drakupdate_fsta?
Now, this is my solution:

/etc/hotplug/usb.usermap:
sony_microvault 0x0003 0x054c 0x01050x 0x 0x00
0x000x000x000x00 0x00
0x

/etc/hotplug/usb/sony_microvault:
#! /bin/sh
if [ -t -o ! -x /usr/bin/logger ]; then
mesg () {
echo "$@"
}
else
mesg () {
/usr/bin/logger -t $0 "$@"
}
fi
mv /usr/sbin/drakupdate_fsta /usr/sbin/drakupdate_fsta.off
modprobe sd_mod
mesg Module sd_mod running. Now /dev/sda is here.
echo "#!/bin/bash" > $REMOVER
echo "if [ -t -o ! -x /usr/bin/logger ]; then" >> $REMOVER
echo "mesg () {" >> $REMOVER
echo "echo \"\$@\"" >> $REMOVER
echo "}" >> $REMOVER

echo "/usr/bin/logger \"\$@\"" >> $REMOVER

Re: [expert] pocket pc

2003-01-17 Thread James Beam
I got the very same problem. At sourceforge.net you
can find a project named gcesinc. It's for gnome, but
I've had no time to test it, so I don't know if it's
working. Tell me if it works.

Some time ago I downloaded another project, but I
couldn't compile it, so it never worked (I can't
remember the name, but I'll give to you later if you
want).

Good luck
