I use a Maestro external voice modem and have done for a several of years,

Can't remember the link path but in the area of the prefs that you

2003-11-11 Thread bluefire78
Thanks Artemio. Actually this is more complicated than I thought -

Yes it is Real Player.

When I run it standalone, it can't see the net, and can't load any of the
channels from its menu. (Yes, the network settings in its options appear
to be sane, except that I'm attempting to do this over a modem...)

I know it can't see the net since when I run the wizard to check for the
best connection type, it thinks I have a firewall. I don't. Are there
ports which should be specifically opened that aren't by default? If so,
which, and how?

BUT, when inside firebird, it can run movies from real.com (the website).
That's the only site out of several which works. As a test, could you
maybe post a site from which real movies work for you, so I can check?

Thanks

If you have not setup a filter in procmail, here is what mine looks
like:
## File all spam mail

This is catching 98% of all spam received. I would not suggest sending
spam to /dev/null, by sending it to a folder you have the ability to
make sure spammassassin does not think some is spam when it really is
not. I also have my mailreader to show all attachements as attachements
and not displayed inline this way I do not have to actually see the junk

identify certain messages as spam...BUT THEY KEEP GETTING THROUGH!

I don't know how you set spamassasin, but in my installation all it does
is tag the message as spam in the headers and I still had to create a
rule (in my case using sieve) to move all this garbage to a spam folder.

What this indicates is that ACPI is doing what it thinks it's supposed
to do and the results aren't right. Honestly without the box (or a box
that does do ACPI) in front of me I'm pretty much fresh out of ideas on
this one.

It is probably anacron, mailing you (root) the output of your job. While
it is unclear from the anacron docs whether or not it will work, you might
try adding a line near the top of your /etc/anacrontab file like:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

If anacron can use that variable the way cron does, this should fix it.
Also, as Jack suggested, you really should edit /etc/postfix/aliases to
point root's mail to a valid local user or to an external address; after
doing this, you will need to run "postalias", then "postfix reload", for
the change to take effect. This bit is on the last line in the "stock"
aliases file, BTW. This alone may not be enough, however - see below.

> Is it postfix itself? In order to avoid having the mandrake list bounce

> this [EMAIL PROTECTED] originating from postfix via this "myorigin"
> setting?

That is a safe bet, as it appends that to all emails sent from the local
system without a "From:" address that includes an "@somewhere" suffix,
including those ones. It also appends it to the "To:" header for all mail
sent to any local user by username alone. This means that even if you have
an alias set up for root's mail, that may not fix this problem - postfix
won't realize that "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" really means "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", so the
alias table will likely not be consulted; even if it were, the setting
there would probably have to point to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", rather than just
"user", or postfix will just translate "user" to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" ... :(

Since $myorigin is probably not in your "mydestination =" line, postfix
then tried to send it onward to yahoo.com's MX server. Putting that into
"mydestination =" would prevent you from mailing to anyone who actually
*is* at yahoo.com (as postfix would then try to deliver it locally, and
fail), so it's clear that this little hack of yours has its drawbacks. ;)

The reason that the list will not accept mail from you directly may be
because while ravenhome.net is a valid domain, you do not have an MX
record set up for it; it might be rejecting it on that basis alone (though
I doubt it). As your system (or your router, as the case may be) is up and
answering pings at the moment, but not accepting SMTP connections, the
latter may be being blocked by your ISP, or if not there, then by your
postfix configuration, or perhaps by your firewall. This would definitely
keep the list from accepting [EMAIL PROTECTED] as a valid address, as you
cannot receive mail back from the list at that address under your current
setup. This reason seems the more likely of the two, IMHO, as MX records
are considered optional for domains where the domain's A record points to
the IP address where the mail server is running. Of course, if your system
isn't always on, just having it accept SMTP connections when it is isn't
enough; at the very least, you would also need to define a backup MX host,
for those times when your system is unavailable.

Even if your ISP blocks incoming SMTP connects, TIMTOWTDI, of course ...

Since you own the domain, you may benefit from moving the DNS for it from
dyndns.org to ZoneEdit (http://www.zoneedit.com), which also provides free
dynamic DNS for up to five domains. One of the advantages of that provider
is their MailForward service (also free), which would allow you to have it
forward [EMAIL PROTECTED] to any other valid e-mail address (and you can
have as many of these as you need, so [EMAIL PROTECTED] can point to an
entirely different address, or to the same one that xxx does - most other
free DNS services don't offer quite this much flexibility). Assuming that
the mail at the address you forward to can be retrieved by using either
POP3 or IMAP, you can then have fetchmail poll for the mail, and deliver
it into your local mail spool. That's how I do it here.

This allows you to set "myorigin = ravenhome.net" and to include $myorigin
in your "mydestination =" line, which prevents little problems like these.
I send mail directly to the list with no trouble, and mail from the list
goes by way of ZoneEdit to an address provided by my ISP, and fetchmail
just pulls it in from there. Works like a charm. If you're interested in
setting up a config like mine, I'd be happy to help out in any way I can.

And just about anything beats using a spam magnet

Great place to start (English or French) is urpmi.org. It's a project

Set your hostname appropriately and all messages sent to root should be
delivered to the right person. You may also create an alias in Postfix
assuming that you have no reason to actually send messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, you could do as I do and set up an alternate transport in Kmail to send
to the list using your ISP SMTP server rather than trying to bounce messages
through Postfix which the Mandrake mailing list appears to dislike, and then
send all other messages through Postfix. I figure it has something to do
with references to internal networks in the Received headers.

Ok, that's what I'm looking for. I want to be able to do some of those
"better" effects. So, how would I approach that? Moviemaker can take
still jpegs and turn them into transitions like a page flip for
example. How would I accomplish that on linux? Is that where the gimp
would come in? I guess I'm looking for any plugins or whatever that
could go into kino.

I'm going to play more with kino and cinelerra and see how it works out.

Thanks!

Create titles - do fewer but better effects - export video in more
formats(like divx) - show frame numbers (as well as times)when editing

1. AG is short for "Aktiengesellschaft" which means the company is owned

[expert] Need some docs on administering Mandrake systems

2003-11-11 Thread Jason Williams
Hello everyone.

We are in the process of replacing all of our Red Hat servers with other
systems. One system we are strongly contemplating is Mandrake.

What im looking for is some good documents that show how to adminster
Mandrake systems. For instance, any Mandrake specific tools, like urpmi.

If anyone could point me in the right direction to learn about tools like
urpmi, draksec (i think) and others, I would greatly appreciate it.
I should note, i'm reading up on the docs on the page, but I have not found
anything that has really helped me learn more about the system and specific
tools.

Cheers,

Jason

Kino will allow you to do some simple video editing and includes effects

jpegs (hint use gimp to create them), it is not as comprehensive as

RE: [expert] KControl broken after 9.2 update completed

2003-11-11 Thread JOHAM,DAVID (HP-Boise,ex1)

Thanks James!

Now the question is, do I trust the update to the update when it was an
update that forced me to update again in the first place? :)

Vincent, if you are watching this, could you also have the package
maintainers fix the screensavers problem for good while they're at it?
That's the whole reason I got into this mess in the first place. I would
like screen savers to show up in KControl.

David,

Just talked with Vincent via e-mail on this and he's forwarding
things up the line to the package maintainers. He agrees that this one
is a lot more serious than initially thought and they are on it.

Primero,

If your box is like my compaq (Armada M700) then ACPI is build to an
interim draft not the final standard. Does APM work for you? I had to
drop back to it because like I said no matter what OS ... it doesn't
work right. (my batt actually reads 0 no matter what I do, even if I
remove events entirely.)

You might report him to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (not that they care.) Other option
block his IP number (which will only work until he/she gets a new
lease.) Or go to the IP number with a browser see if he/she is running a

reviewing the logs, I have seen a large number of GETs in
/var/log/httpd/*.log with very long pathnames and/or
requests to xxx.xxx.xxx:25. I think that
is how they got in.
Not "in"; but "through"... I pointed this out to David in a private mail
along with the below quick test for proxying... Seems that using ":25"
is
a twist that I hadn't seen; but then again, most of us have turned off
proxying after this was raised here months ago...

Part of my msg to David:
Hmmm... wonder if this is related to the www relaying that can happen
in an apache server... [testing your address...] port 80 is blocked...
is
this done by your ISP? The way to check for httpd relaying is simple:
telnet 80
[connected messages]
GET http://some.remote.site HTTP/1.0

Wow! The other day I got a nasty e-mail (in that it crashed opera when it
tried to open it) from someone who has adsl with pacbell.net. The header
said it was from my domain (which really p*ss*d me off.) So I just tried
your relay test on this guy's ip address, and it worked.

Now, how do you tell the user? - that is, how do you find out who it is?

If the returned page is from some.remote.site, your server is an open
relay... I've seen this long ago and suspected people were using this
to bump hit-counters causing possible charges ($$) between target and
advertiser. Dunno if this could be used to relay mail; but would not be
surprised.
It appears that adding ":25" was a pretty simple hack to abuse the apache
proxying... yet another reason for everyone to verify that mod-proxy is
disabled

said "if it's a *script* then it might tell you something useful."
I tried running file on some scripts; it seems to describe what type of
scripts you're looking at. Is that what you were getting at?

Thanks Jack!

[expert] Presario 2700 & ACPI

2003-11-11 Thread Primero.Franz
Hi all.

I've got some problems with ACPI support on my Laptop, here is my setup:

Compaq Presario 2700
Mandrake 9.2
Kernel 2.4.22-021mdk
Iv'e tried with the RPM Kernel version , loading any possible combinations
of ACPI-MODULES, and a self-build
Kernel 2.4.22-021mdk version with all ACPI features enabled.

My problems are about the Battery.
First of all , altough i have only one battery, the "cat
proc/acpi/battery/..." shows me 2 batteries!!
Then, when i plug-out the ac-adapter, the system recognizes it and the
systray icon changes.
The battery icon appears but it doesn't work, it's like i have no battery
and mandrake starts to warn me
about this.
"cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/info" says "present:no" .
I've tryed some re-compilation of kernel, i've tryed patches and ...
anything i've found!!
Anyone have some ideas? :-))

Thank you.

something else is wrong with your posting problems, but setting myorigin
to yahoo.com is a Bad Idea(TM). Put it back, and edit
/etc/postfix/aliases to point [EMAIL PROTECTED] to a valid email.

Use an external, serial modem IMHO. They just work, work well and are
easy to set up. Save yourself the headache, go hardware external.

Pretty well any hardware modem - i.e. one that does all it's own
work. If you can live with an external one they are easy to find
and cheap. Any model will do. Internal hardware modems are much
harder to find, though they do exist.

there a Liniux modem website? linmodems.?? something or other?

Sending email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] will fail and go to nobody. What is actually
sending this message and where do I find the config file so I can correct it
to send messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Is it postfix itself? In order to avoid having the mandrake list bounce all
my mails back at me, I had to setup my local postfix to set "myorigin =
yahoo.com". If I set it to be my actual localdomain (ravenhome.net) I will
lose the ability to post to the expert list. Is this [EMAIL PROTECTED]
originating from postfix via this "myorigin" setting?

All that I'll add to this is that it's not entirely clear from the wording
of the initial question whether or not the printing being done is local
or remote, and if it's remote, whether we are dealing with Linux->Linux,
Linux->Win, or Win->Linux.

James's answer covers local and Linux->Linux situations nicely, and the
printerdrake app should be able to set CUPS up properly in like manner
when adding a remote printer that is being shared from a Win box, but jobs
being sent from a Win box to a Linux-connected printer are different. They
are processed by Samba, and there are two ways to set this up: have the
Win system(s) install and use the appropriate Win driver for that printer,
or have Samba use the CUPS driver and set up the Win system(s) to use the
"Generic Postscript Printer" driver.

Once you decide which method is best for you, you need to use the correct
"print command" entry in /etc/samba/smb.conf to implement your choice. See
the relevant comments within that file for more on this.

HTH!

Ok, if I do 'which gpilotd' it's nowhere to be found. If I do 'gpilotd'
from the command, I get --bash command not found. In fact, if you do
'gpil' you get:

gpilotd-control-applet gpilotd-session-wrapper gpilot-install-file

The actual 'gpilotd' seems to be buried somewhere. I tried doing 'vi

but it wasn't very helpful for me.

I think the others are more of an expert than me so they really don't care

Note the title lines if they are "" instead of whatever things go bad.
Anything you put in will get stuff back.

Then as the user (not root) do either update-menus, or if you want to
see the output update-menus -v

Not really because the concept of "drivers" as you are used to in
windows is different in Linux. Meaning that if you have the software
needed to print it includes the "drivers" needed. If you're system is
all linux cups will automatically detect printers installed on other
cups enabled linux boxes and allow you to use it's printer / drivers.
(If for example I bring my laptop onto your network I will "see" your
printers and be able to print through them if I'm on the same lan.) So
although the approach is different the affect is the same in this case.

Hi List!

I'm looking for recommendations of hard/soft modem for Mandrake Linux

I had problems with Lucent and Pctel (softmodem).

Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

See what I get for reading the FM *grin* The last one I can't test
because my laptop doesn't do ACPI or the lid close feature. and my
desktop doesn't have a lid *grin* One question here. Is there anything
being written to /var/log/messages when this happens? If there is too
much noise to be able to tell you could do a tail -f /var/log/messages >
somefilename.txt Then close the lid. and see if it gives you any
useful info.

Hello all,

Last night, as the last thing I did after setting up a shiny new box, I
updated to all the latest bug and security fixes for 9.2. As a result of my
efforts, KDE's KControl is now totally broken. When I try to launch it, I
get the following spit out to the console:

No K menu group with X-KDE-BaseGroup=settings found ! Defaulting to Settings

After which, Kcontrol comes up without any plugins. A similar error happens
when I try to configure Konqueror:

WARNING: No K menu group with X-KDE-BaseGroup=settings found ! Defaulting to
Settings/
kcontrol: ERROR: Module filebehavior not found!
kcontrol: ERROR: Module fileappearance not found!
kcontrol: ERROR: Module filepreviews not found!

kcontrol: ERROR: Module kcmcss not found!
kcontrol: ERROR: Module crypto not found!
kcontrol: ERROR: Module useragent not found!
kcontrol: ERROR: Module khtml_plugins not found!

Needless to say, I'm not terribly pleased that a normal bugfix update
totally broke my KDE setup when all I really wanted were some screensavers
:)

Doing a quick Google search turned up the error message, but nothing helpful
about what to do about it. I've rm -rf'd my .kde directory to no use. I seem
to recall (now, not before I started the upgrade) that someone on this list
had a similar problem. Does this ring any bells? Has anyone upgraded and
found themselves dead in the water? If this is a common problem, does
Mandrake know about this? How do I fix it?

Help! I really don't want to reinstall from scratch.

Thanks in advance

David

It's not so much that I can't start the program; the start program
is 'gpilotd-control-applet'. The thing is, I just want to put my
visor in it's cradle and hit the sync button - I've been using
jpilot, but you have to hit the button on the cradle then click
the sync button on jpilot and sometimes that doesn't work and if
you don't hurry, it times out and you have to start over on the
series of clicks and button pushes. Gnome-pilot is supposed to
have the gpilotd (daemon) which runs in the background. Now once
you've started it via the applet / dialog (which also brings up a
dialog box asking you to confirm the device and settings), you can
hit the cradle button to sync and it works great. The problem is
that I don't leave this machine on, so I don't want to have to
manually start that applet each time and even if it does start
automatically, I still need to hit the 'ok' button each time. I
just want it to start silently in the background. I can't seem to
find any documentation that covers what I want it to do.

OK, I did a rebuild of both the system and the root menus from MenuDrake and
now KControl seems to be working again - except for the fact that I still
don't have screen savers which was the whole reason for the upgrade in the
first place. I'll log into the machine locally tonight and see if the rest
of the KDE environment has returned to normal...

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

NP :-)

if you've got a sessions-capable window manager, your configger will
have some sort of a "start these programs" tool. Otherwise, put an
executable script into ~/Desktop/Autostart/ and call it from there. If
you go that route, look our for how you edit the script -- Anything in

Hey, awesome!
I had "acpi=ht"; I removed that line altogether and added "noapic"
for kicks.

Ok, killing the thing isn't really a problem - starting it when
the machine boots would be nice. :)
I got a little frustrated trying to find the actual 'gpilotd'
on/off button. I'd like to be able to run the gpilotd as an init

Thanks James,
I d/l'd it and am going to start playing with it now. I'm curious
though; cinelerra is supposed to be the replacement for bcast2k
and I googled around for bcast; do you know why they stopped
supporting bcast?

Thanks again

[expert] manually start / stop gpilotd

How can I start / stop the gpilotd manually?
I want it to get started when the machine boots but I'd like to be
able to shut it off manually.

What about using dynamic DNS?

There are tons of places that do this for free. Personally I use
no-ip.com

No
Galeon is bound to a specific mozilla release. Galeon will not work
afterwards.
Also the mozilla installer will put the mozilla files in a different location
to Mandrake.

Refer to my earlier post today. Use of --nodeps and --force often leads to
grief.

What you can do is to have both versions of mozilla installed and manage
symlinks to select them.

That would be the German equivalent of PLC, Inc., Ltd., etc.
