Well I just got mdk 9.2 and installed Openoffice.org1.1.0 as above and
it would freeze on opening any openoffice file.
Removed it and installed the rpm from the 9.2, some thing freezes.
This happened to 9.1 as well, no version of OO would run after
installing 1.1.0. The os was rather unstable after that as thing like
mozilla would crash/freeze for no reason.
Looks like its another reinstall...

You could also look at the Linux Terminal Server Project found at
http://www.ltsp.org
I have had 4 of these running ranging from pentium 120 with 32mb ram and
up. 16mb of ram will work ok but 32 is better.
My first was a dx2-66 with 8mb of ram, it worked but was a bit slow.
The server will need plenty of ram, I had 512mb in the server and was
using it as a client as well and it worked fine.

Have you checked iptables hasn't been set to a default policy of drop.

To flush the rules
iptables -F

to set all policies to accept
iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT
iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT
iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT

This will leave the box wide open but should be ok for a quick test.

To make the 3 cd's available for ftp install without braking the iso's
open and waisting room I did the following.
The first cd loops fine but you carnt loop the 2nd cd's RPMS2 into the
fist. To get around this I did.

Mkdir /files/mdk-d1, /files/mdk-d2, /files/mdk-d3
Mkdir /files/mandrake91
copy root files of cd1 to mandrake91

## Mount and link Mandrake 91 iso's to mandrake91
#
mount /files/mandrake-91-iso/mandrake-91-disk1.iso -o loop
/files/mdk91-d1
mount /files/mandrake-91-iso/mandrake-91-disk2.iso -o loop
/files/mdk91-d2
mount /files/mandrake-91-iso/mandrake-91-disk3.iso -o loop
/files/mdk91-d3

ln -s /files/mdk91-d1/doc/ /files/mandrake91/doc
ln -s /files/mdk91-d1/dosutils/ /files/mandrake91/dosutils
ln -s /files/mdk91-d1/images/ /files/mandrake91/images
ln -s /files/mdk91-d1/isolinux/ /files/mandrake91/isolinux
ln -s /files/mdk91-d1/misc/ /files/mandrake91/misc
ln -s /files/mdk91-d1/tutorial/ /files/mandrake91/tutorial

ln -s /files/mdk91-d1/Mandrake/base/ /files/mandrake91/Mandrake/base
ln -s /files/mdk91-d1/Mandrake/mdkinst/
/files/mandrake91/Mandrake/mdkinst
ln -s /files/mdk91-d1/Mandrake/share/ /files/mandrake91/Mandrake/share

ln -s /files/mdk91-d1/Mandrake/RPMS/ /files/mandrake91/Mandrake/RPMS
ln -s /files/mdk91-d2/Mandrake/RPMS2/ /files/mandrake91/Mandrake/RPMS2
ln -s /files/mdk91-d3/Mandrake/RPMS3/ /files/mandrake91/Mandrake/RPMS3

Add a user ftpdl passwd whatever
At the bottom of proftpd.conf add
DefaultRoot /files/mandrake91 ftpdl
Restart proftpd.

Now you can do a ftp install as user ftpdl and not worry about changing
cd's.
For multiple installs add more users to proftpd.
Its a quiet saturday morning down under :)

[expert] Partitions

2003-09-14 Thread Gary Montalbine
The saga continues. I have been reading my copy of the 9.1 Mandrake "The
Definitive Manual" or in my case the confusion manual. To review I
installed 9.2 on my second HD and got it bootable. Now I am trying to back
up certain files from my /home directory using drakbackup. The default
directory for saving the files is /var/lib. Using this directory overloads
my / partition. I tried diskdrake as root to try and reduce my /home
partition and move /var into the empty space. I could not unmount /home to
resize it. I also noticed that my hdb drive was partitioned but not mounted.
Also IIRC Anne did a TWiki on moving her /usr directory. I was unable to
find it. Anne if you are reading this where did you put it?
Thanks,
Gary

[expert] 9.1 /home in 9.2

2003-09-13 Thread Gary Montalbine
I have installed 9.2 on my second HD. Using fstab I was able to open my
9.1 home directory in 9.2. My 9.1 desktop with icons appeared in 9.2. As I
use 9.2,
add programs and data, will this affect my use of the home directory when
I go back to 9.1? Is there a way to access files in one program from the
other? I can access files in windows from 9.1. However they are both on
the same HD. I was amazed at how easy 9.2 loaded onto the second HD. Once
I got the bootloader figured out with wobo's help. Once I get /home
figured out I should be ready to play with 9.2.

Thanks,

I so, do this:
In 9.1 edit your /etc/lilo.conf (as root, of course) and add:

  label="man92"
Assuming your root partition of 9.2 is on hda5.
Then do a nice '/sbin/lilo' with your 9.1 and you are done. Afterwards
you can set your lilo.conf in 9.2 so that you don't have to see a second
lilo menue.
But, as they say, there are many ways to grill a dog, and I'm sure
you'll read other ways here to do that.

wobo
It worked. I can now boot either program. I am using a second HD so I put the
bootloader for 9.2 in hdb1 and changed lilo in 9.1 as you suggested and it
worked.

Thanks wobo.

I have windows installed and that was picked up by 9.2.

Suggestions please.

Go back into 9.2 which has installed the lilo in MBR. Login as root into
a terminal (by typing 'su' and giving the root password in the next
line).
1. Type 'lilo -u' which removes lilo from the MBR.
2. Type 'lilo -b /dev/hda5' if your root partition of 9.2 is on hda5.
Reboot with your CD1 of 9.1. At the Welcome screen type F1. At the
prompt type 'rescue'.
The installer starts but switches to rescue mode soon. Choose the first
option "Re-install LILO in MBR" or similar. It looks for a Mandrake 9.1
installation and hopefully finds yours. After that you can start again
from 9.1 and choose a way to integrate 9.2 into your 9.1 LILO.
I had to do this today (because of carelessness) and it worked.

Try this Gary;

Open a terminal, navigate to the directory where the ISOs and .asc file

You won't see much until it's done a disk but the processor will

A bit more to add.
If you don't have a domain controller or samba setup as one the winblows 9x
machines will call a browse election every roughly 12 to 15 minutes to see who
will be the browse master. This will cause a lot of netspewy noise on the
network and in the logs.
Winblows 9x browse default no. 1
I think samba defaults with everything off as 1 as well.

On a side note I heard a couple of years back there was a nfs for winblows,
anyone know of a gpl version of this getting around?
This would be a good way to kill off netbios noise on the network.

Re: [expert] re:samba

2003-04-01 Thread Gary Hodder

Hi Richard and others having trouble with samba.

For a network of samba and windows but does not have a windows server/domain
controller.
example setup.
Workgroup = homenet
User = winuser
Passswd = winpass
Win98 user logs into windows with username winuser and passwd winpass.
In control panel network, set identification/workgroup to homenet
In configuration under tcp/ip of network card/wins configuration/ set to ip of
samba server
Give it a ip in the same class C and samba server.

Things to change in samba.conf over the default.
   workgroup = homenet
hosts allow = 192.168.100. #change this to the class c you are on
os level = 34 #for samba to win election over nt/2000 workstations.
   domain master = yes
   preferred master = yes
   wins support = yes

Add the user and passwd to samba/linux box

cut below, save as etc/samba/smbpasswd
# user :group change user to match windows user, change group to mach that
user in /etc/group
winuser:501:::[U
]:LCT-:
winuser2:502:::[U
]:LCT-:
cut-

run smbpasswd winuser
passwd winpass

At this point the "X's" will change to a encrypted password.

Add windows hostname and ip to /etc/hosts

Edit /etc/nsswtched hosts line to
hosts: files dns nisplus nis

Restart samba.
Restart windows to flush cache and try to connect again.
This is from memory and most likely left something out.

Gary.

In the /etc/samba.conf file down near the bottom you will see a section like
this, edit to you liking.

# A publicly accessible directory, but read only, except for people in
# the "staff" group
[public]
   comment = Public Stuff
   path = /home//public

   writable = no
#if writable no, a list of users that can write. a @ is for a group and no @
is for users only. place a comma between users.
   write list = @staff

Make sure permissions are set correctly on /home/public and restart samba.

I want to update other machines and don't want each machine to download from

I could then copy those files to the rc2 directory and burn them as 9.1 final.

2003-03-14 Thread Gary Hodder
Thanks to all who replied.
It seems logical that it would sit there forever trying to do a lookup on a
unknown lo interface.
My sons away for the weekend and don't know his root passwd so wont know the
outcome till sunday night.
I'm looking forward to the results before upgrading my box.

Thanks all,
Gary.
ps disregard any old mail of mine that might come through late as i've just
moved my mail lists to my home domain in the last couple of days.
There was no reverse lookup on my ip so mail was rejected.
My isp has now happily pointed it at my domain, thanks Igreen.

Re: [expert] KDE very slow in mdk9.1

2003-03-13 Thread Gary Hodder
It is the latest as of a couple of days.
It boots up ok and is quick in text mode.
When running kde it starts loading ok, brings up the kde box and goes through
those items and then it disappears. All that is left is the blue screen, its
just stops there, 20 mins later still only blue screen.
(All that blue screen needs is Death written on it and it would remind me of
winblows).
Gnome dies at a similar stage as well.
He's trying different video cards so we'll see how that goes.
Looks like i've a lot more downloading to do.

Thanks
Gary.

Is lilo installed on hdb?
Boot from floppy with hdb removed.
linux root=/dev/hdc?
? being partition number.
run lilo and reboot to see if it boots from hard drive.

Hi all,

my son's just loaded mdk 9.1 on his machine and finds kde runs very slow, much
slower than 9.0. The machine is a celeron 400 with 96mb ram.
I wont find out more till I get home. Are there any ideas that he could try in
the mean time?

Thanks

Re: [expert] Lilo with multiple hard drives...

2003-03-07 Thread Gary Hodder
Hi Mark,

with the 3 drives in and it boots normally, edit the fstab file and
change the hdc? to hdb?
? being the partition number.
Change lilo to be hdb instead of hdc.
Reboot with a floppy, at lilo promp: linux root=/dev/hdb?
? being the partition number the os is on.
Run lilo.
Reboot to boot from kernel on harddrive.

Gary.

Hi Ric,

Is port 25 blocked by the isp, some isp's block port 25 incoming to the user
on home accounts to stop people running mail servers.

Can you borrow a old box from work and load a text only Mdk on it and leave
the box wide open, then moved your mail setting to it to see if that works.
If that works then move your firewall to it to see if that works.
A process of elimination will eventually find it.

Gary.

Hi David,

if you want 56k dialin connection to your server, your server will require a
digital modem and link to the exchange.
If you have a 56k modem hooked to a anologue (pots) line on you server you
cannot get any higher speed than 33.6k.
Read up on digital to anologue and analogue to digital conversions to find out
why.

You could setup webmail on your server, then they can access there mail using
Internet Exploder or whatever browser they use.

Hi Charles,

The 32mb nvidia card was on loan to see if it was worth upgrading to a new
video card. I've got my old S3 4mb 3d card back in and all is working fine
again.
I used midnight commander to look inside the rpm's to see what libraries were
installed. Manually removed the .18 libraries and links and reinstalled .16.

Any opinions on a good video card that doesn't use the nvidia chipset, dual
head and tvout would be nice if cheep enough.
I'm not interested in playing gamed on it.

I did a rpm -i *fontconfig* to install the packages and that worked fine.
The aviplayer would not run.
Now I carnt remove these packages.
Reinstalling the old packages gives the following when trying to run aviplay.
[root@sandy avifile-mdk9]# aviplay
aviplay: relocation error: /usr/lib/libqavm-0.7.so.0: undefined symbol:
static_QUType_varptr
Any ideas on how to fix this?
I think it was a bad idea getting a nvidia card as all worked fine before
then.

Hi Charles

was trying to do the right thing and download off a local mirror. I use
planetmirror as it is fast for us here in Australia, well when there's no
major Linux release :)
There is no contrib in Mdk9. There is a devel and under that there are cooker
and contrib directories.
All the avifile parts loaded ok but failed to run.
Will look around for another local mirror that has Mdk9 contrib.

Thanks
Gary.

This works for a Dlink 11meg card and I used I think linux-wlan-1.14.
This was a little while back and I now have a 22meg Dlink which has a
different chipset and not supported by Linux.

modprobe prism2_pci

wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable

wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_autojoin ssid=
authtype=opensystem

ifconfig wlan0 netmask broadcast

route add default gw

At this point it should work but mine didnt.
I had to do a extra
/etc/rc.d/init.d/wlan stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/wlan start
then it would magically start working.

Hope that helps

Re: [expert] Root login timeout

2002-10-25 Thread Gary Hodder
Hi Dianne,

logging out happens for root and other users.
Leaving it at a login prompt and not logging in, it recycles the login
prompt with another.
So if you login and do nothing it logs out after a 15 minutes.
This behavior did not happen in 8.2, its only in 9.

Gary.

Started autofs and all the mount points under /mnt had disappeared
making it impossible to go to say the cdrom using mc.
Also is there a fix for the cdrom and floppy icons on the desktop to
work?
Currently got everything back on manual mounting.

Hi Thomas,

I had this problem to.
First I disables the autofs in the run levels.
Kill the 2 proccess's that were made by autofs, ones a /net mount.
This will remove them from mtab.
Comment out the 2 lines in auto.master.
This will allow it to shutdown properly and restart without trying to
fsck it to death.
Thats as far as I got as I am not at home to look more.
Hope that helps.

I agree with this concept for desktops, even more so laptops.

LM 8.1 on my Sony VAIO PCG-SR7K laptop sort of understands suspend mode, but there are
some issues to resolve before it is really useful.

o I can enter suspend by pressing Fn+Esc or sliding the power switch off. I don't
see any difference.

o I can resume by pressing any key (I recommend shift to minimize surprise) or
sliding the power switch.

o When my session restarts the time switches from local to gmt. hwclock --hctosys
corrects, but must su first.

o USB mouse stops working, touchpad mouse works. Only way to get USB mouse back is
to reboot (restart X). BTW, cat /dev/usbmouse shows data arriving, so fault must be
with X.

o 802.11B PC-CARD NIC works.

I would like a hibernate option, too (write out session to HD and full powerdown) but
suspend is more importent for mobil use.

[expert] WACOM USB tablet with 8.1?

2002-06-27 Thread Gary Dunn

[new]
Anybody have a WACOM USB tablet working with LM 8.1? Can it be done
without building a new kernel?

[old]
I finally got my Sony USB mouse to work with LM 8.1 on my VAIO laptop.
Problem was too much out of date info on the 'net. No need to add
modules or create /dev/input/mice. In the end, all I had to do was edit
/etc/sysconfig/usb and change mouse=no to (da dah) mouse=yes and create
/dev/usbmouse with a symbolic link to /dev/misc/psaux. After that,

cat /dev/usbmouse

produced all sorts of wunnerfull junk on the screen. The last step was
to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and add a second PS/2 mouse fed by
/dev/usbmouse.

My only complaint now is that after unplugging the mouse it does not
return when I plug it back in, even tho /var/log/messages shows it was
found and recognized. XFree86 doesn't appear to have a way to cope with
hot plugging a USB mouse.

[expert] Name of hard spam blocker

2002-06-26 Thread Gary Dunn

Awhile back I read about a program that would refuse to accept mail from
senders not on an approved list maintained by the recipient. I would
like to experiment with such a program. I use POP3 to a vanilla local
ISP (PIXI.NET, very nice, small, local Honolulu ISP, been with them for
years). Currently I use Evolution (LM 8.1) to pick up the mail directly.
I anticipate having to change to something like fetchmail, to provide a
place -- a hook -- where the blocking can occur.

The key to this filter's functionality is that I don't have to predict
an expression to block unwanted mail. All mail is treated as unwanted
until I say it can be delivered. When someone not on my list sends me a
message, they receive an automatic reply with instructions how to get
around the block. This is slightly annoying to real people, but
effective against spammers who use bogus return addresses.

What programs can be used for this?

Yours is exactly the kind of experience I was hoping to have with LM. I
believe my problems started with my VAIO, which uses the one and only
PCMCIA slot to host the CD-ROM -- the installer thought I didn't have a
PCMCIA device. By any chance were you using WEP encryption? The last
stumbling block for me with LM8.2 was that I could not set my WEP key.

No such thing. I've been trying to get a U.S. Robotics wireless card to
work on a Sony VAIO PCG-SR7. I finally gave up trying LM8.2 and switched
to Debian; I'm a lot closer, but still unsuccessful.

The task breaks down into four parts:

Networking (ifconfig, etc)
PCMCIA card services
PCMCIA network card support
PCMCIA wireless card support

The LM8.2 has PCMCIA card services built-in (as have previous kernels).
But, if you did not have PCMCIA hardware (the slots or bays) installed
during OS installation, it will not be turned on. This is controlled by
/etc/sysconfig/pcmcia. It takes more than switching "no" to "yes" in
this file to get PCMCIA card services working, and there is no pretty
Mandrake tool to help you.

The Grand Puba of PCMCIA is David Hines, and his web site is mandatory
reading. A superb example of open-source software.

http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/

There, read especially "Linux PCMCIA HOWTO," section 2.3, "Startup
options." I wasted hours trying to get things working with only
PCMCIA=yes and the other lines left to their default XXX=(blank). You
really do need PCIC=i82365, and you must edit this file by hand as root.
You don't need to install the software or build anything, you just need
to activate it.

To test if PCMCIA card services are working, insert your card and
examine /var/lib/stab. It should contain info related to you card. This
file is updated whenever a card is inserted or removed.

The network card support (v.s. hard drives and modems) comes from
/etc/pcmcia/network. Most of it is about wired cards (802.3).

Wireless cards take this thing to a whole 'nuther level -- over the
horizon. You must set many parameters beyond Ethernet and TCP/IP, like
the name of your network, what frequencies to use, whether you are a
client or a base station, and, most difficult of all, WEP encryption.
All this is done with the Wireless Tools for Linux, by another superman
kind of a guy, Jean Tourrilhes.

http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Tools.html

The problem I had, right off the bat, was that I did not install
development tools on my little VAIO laptop. I did manage to get them
installed, but just barely. Make built the tools without a hitch, but
make install failed because the path the the man pages was missing
"man8." So, mkdir /usr/local/man/man8 first, then make install.

Where I run into grief with this stuff is that according to David Hines
and comments in the wireless files in /etc/pcmcia, this stuff is broken
in Red Hat and derivative distros, including LM. In LM8.2 I got my card
light to come on, /var/lib/stab said it was a wireless card, but
iwconfig acted as if the card did not have WEP encryption. It would not
display the key, nor could I set it. So I switched to Debian, because
that's what Jean Tourrilhes uses. Just last night I got the card on, the
interface up, and it took my WEP key. Only, I still could not ping
anything except myself.

Another good resource is Linux on Laptops, http://www.linux-laptop.net/

All it should take, I think, is to "source" the file instead of just
running it. Do a man bash and / (that's search) source

Oh. So the "ntfs" stuff is for mounting a Windows NT partition on the same

On my LM 8.1 box "man fstab" points me to "man mount" for those options,
and there, around line 850, I find:

Mount options for ntfs
[snip]

   uid=value, gid=value and umask=value
Set the file permission on the filesystem. By
default, the files are owned by root and not read

That last sentence sounds relevant to this situation. I find no mention

Looks like a DNS - bind - network configuration problem. "hostname"
alone takes your host's name from a file, while the fqdn option tells
hostname to do a DNS lookup.

Does the output to dig slashdot.org look similar to this?

; <<>> DiG 9.2.0rc3 <<>> slashdot.org

You definitely need to edit httpd.conf, which may be located in
/usr/local/apache/conf depending on how your system is set up. (My
apache is on a FreeBSD box, which puts it in /usr/local/etc/apache.)

Look for this:

# ServerName allows you to set a host name which is sent back to clients
for
# your server if it's different than the one the program would get
(i.e., use
# "www" instead of the host's real name).
#
# Note: You cannot just invent host names and hope they work. The name
you
# define here must be a valid DNS name for your host. If you don't
understand
# this, ask your network administrator.
# If your host doesn't have a registered DNS name, enter its IP address
here.
# You will have to access it by its address (e.g., http://123.45.67.89/)
# anyway, and this will make redirections work in a sensible way.
#
# 127.0.0.1 is the TCP/IP local loop-back address, often named
localhost. Your
# machine always knows itself by this address. If you use Apache
strictly for
# local testing and development, you may use 127.0.0.1 as the server
name.
#
ServerName your.server.name

Might have something to do with the fact that back in 7.2 days the default
ssh connection used protocol 1. Not too long ago openssh changed the
default to protocol 2 (which is more secure), and maybe LM 8.2 uses that
newer version. When I ran into this after upgrading ssh on my client my PKI

I don't think this mobilie has an external cdrom.

Check out http://www.blankslate.net/comp/vaio.php all about installing
Mandrake on a PCG-FX200 And of course look around
http://www.linux-laptop.net/

I have a PCG-SR7K, and with some help from the folks here I got LM8.2
installed. It does require expert mode with that special command line,
expert noauto ide2=0x180,0x386. Last night I even got the PCMCIA card
services working. Now comes the wireless network card.

I have read about installing Red Hat on a VAIO using a similar trick.
Perhaps it is not unique to LM, but I say the LM install should reconize
this hardware (it does, look in /var/log/messages) and take appropriate
action. Why make we VAIO folk feel unloved?

> > until I tried to recompile the kernel with acpi instead of apm.

Can you elaborate on this? I know that acpi is newer and better than
apm, and that's about all I know. I am surprised that LM8.2 does not
provide acpi support right off the cd. Can you write up exactly what you
did?

Thanks.

Re: [expert] Laptop suggestions

2002-04-19 Thread Gary Spiers

I am running Mandrake 8.1 on a couple of notebooks.

The older machine is a 3.2 lb HP Omnibook 800 - 166MHz Pentium, 80MB memory
(maximum possible) and 4 GB disk space. This machine now does very light duty
as a server on my home network but was my main portable until I got the IBM
last year. The HP is unusual in that it has built-in SCSI so it is easy to
hang periphereals off it (A scsi tower containing an additional 10GB disk,
cdrw and Jaz drives plus a legal size flatbed scanner).

My active laptop is an IBM X20 - 600MHz PIII, 320MB, 20GB, modem, ethernet,
pcmcia/cardbus socket, compact flash socket, audio in/out, external video
out, usb ports set up for dual boot (Win98). Weighs about 3.5 lbs (I like
light laptops) but has an Xbase that increases the weight to about 5.5 lb and
adds dvdrom and floppy, printer, serial and external mouse ports. Most of the
time I carry the machine without the Xbase. Having juggled cables and
external drives for floppy and cdrom with the HP and watching Vaio owners
juggle all that stuff I am convinced that the Xbase is the way to go when the
extras are needed.

Everything is working under Linux except the hot swap of the Xbase - I have
to reboot every time I add/remove it but I have not spent time trying to see
if I can solve this yet. The modem is a winmodem which I have working but
there are at least three different modem/ethernet combinations for this
machine some of which do not appear to work well (even under Windows).
Connection to my lan is made wirelessly using a Linksys pcmcia card although
I did use the built-in wired ethernet port before getting the wireless card.
Battery life is excellent and suspend/resume works smoothly and quickly. I
have been very happy with this machine. Although this is not one of the
machines that IBM will/would preinstall Linux on I have had no problems other
than the Xbase docking. I picked the IBM up fully loaded as described for
~$1K as an open box special (but new unused with full warranty) at about the
time last year that a lot of 'technology' companies were having difficulties.
