[Felvtalk] Hello Susan!

2009-06-07 Thread jastiffler
Hello Susan,

BB was a stray when we came to us so I don't know his exact age, but the vet
seems to think he's anywhere between 4-5 years of age.? I've had him for two
years and I wish with all my heart that we could have had him as a kitten...we
would have given him his proper vaccinations.? I'm so glad to be here with
others who love their kitties!? Sometimes people don't understand...but my BB
is a member of the family and so I hurt when he hurts.? Now that this has
happened, I'm one of the first to tell peopledon't let your cats roam
around outside, keep them safe and get their vaccinations!!

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this forum and have recently learned that my sweet boy, BB
was diagnosed positive with Feline Leukemia and cancerous tumors in the
bone marrow.? I was wondering if any of you knew what stage of the
disease tumors in the bone marrow were?? My sweet BB is on prednisone,
although I don't think the dosage is enough because he's still lethargic
and weak.? The?cancer in the bone marrow is making him anemic.? Is there
anything you guys can tell me about what I can do for him?? I hate to
see him this way...I love him so much.? And to be honest, I'm scared
that I don't have much time left with him because his appetite is
poor..he'll nibble on food but doesn't drink much water.? The Vet seems
to think that BB contracted the virus as a kitten and it's been dormant
until now.? I'm so sorry to hear of all the other kitties that have died
from this terrible illness.

Thank you,
Jaci

Hi Susan,

I have been reading about your little Autumn. She is SO lucky to have you in
her corner. I agree with what everyone else has said here. I wouldn't
vaccinate my positive anymore. And the archives are really a great place to
search for info. I love the search feature. Do you have any other kitties at
home? Did you know Autumn could "throw" the virus over time if her immune
system will fight it off?

Subject: Autumn - Update

Thanks to everyone who responded. Autumn is about 11 weeks old. She has really
responded the treatments and has perked up considerably. The Pedialyte
definitely helped. Once we brought her home from vet, I started her immediately
on her antibiotics, but within the hour she had vomiting and diarrhea. She was
very weak and so I would smear Nutri Cal on her paws and squirt Pedialyte in
her mouth. After every treatment she would perk up and the vomiting stopped
that night. She still had diarrhea the next morning but I was able to get her
to start eating the prescription food off my fingers. Today she is playful, but
thin. We're trying to fatten her up a bit and get her energy levels back up.
She's such a precious blessing, we are very grateful that she turned around.

Good afternoon and thanks for allowing us to join!

My kitty, Maxx was just diagnosed with hyperT on Friday. I had
noticed that she had lost a little weight, but attributed it to her
aging. Her bloodwork from her annual wellness exam caught the
hyperT, along with a couple other things. I have had Maxx for the
past 12 years. I found her in downtown Phoenix, AZ. She was already
full-grown and spayed, so I am not sure of her actual age. My vet is
recommending the I-131 treatment, but that is something I will have
to save up for. She also has a dime-sized lump near her right
shoulder and an abscessed tooth. I inquired about starting with the
methimazole pills, then getting her tooth pulled and lump removed
and biopsied (preferably on the same visit) before finishing with
the I-131. This seemed like a logical progression to me, but my vet
stated that the methimazole will block the iodine uptake and cannot
be done once the methimazole treatment has begun. I have since heard
stories to the contrary, so any input on this would be greatly
appreciated. I just moved from North Austin to South Austin and this
is a new vet for me.

Maxx has 1 sibling, a timid 130lb. female Anatolian Shepherd named
Pele, that she thoroughly enjoys bossing around on a regular basis.
Oh, and my name is Christina, Maxx's humble servant.

This is why I would go ahead and vaccinate. Then you don't have her 'catching'
the illness while you're waiting 3 months for a confirmation.. UNLESS
she is totally isolated from other cats for the 3 month period.

I do not do any dentals on my cats at all. Some here do. Just depends on
your philosophy (and bank account...lol).

Did you know that cats can throw the FeLV virus? It's called seroconverting,
and about 30-40% of cats do it after exposure. So retesting Autumn in 3-4
months might be a great idea. She may not have it next time you test!

Keeping Autumn stress-free and feeding her a good diet are the two most
important things you can do to keep the virus sequestered. I would also
supplement her food with 250 mg a day of lysine (PURE lysine). You can buy it
at the health food store and add it to her wet food; it's tasteless. I feed
mine Innova Evo too. IMO, it's the best there is, mainly because of the
protein content and lack of grains.

What to watch for? Same as you would for a healthy cat: lethargy, white gums
(anemia), inappetence, fever. The symptoms can onset at any time or never.
Kittens are more susceptible because their immune systems aren't fully
developed (thus the lysine). There are also proactive treatments. Best
Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah (the big kahuna of sanctuaries) gives their
FeLV babies intramuscular shots of ImmunoRegulin once a week or month (can't
remember). You might be able to find info. on their website. Other people use
Interferon. You might post specific questions as subject headings in order to
catch the eye of some of the members, because many don't read all posts,

is trying desperately to find a house to rent.. Preferably in the
Vallejo or Oakland area of the San Francisco bay
She is comfortable going up to about 2,000 per month,,,has a great
income and great rental history as she was in her other home for 6
years until the electrical fire that started in the basement
destroyed the home.
she does not have good internet access as yet so she has asked me to

You truly make me ill. I pray that someday you feel good enough about
yourself not to have to belittle and berate others. This used to be a place
to come and get help from those that were all going through a difficult time
with their beloved felines, and you have turned this forum into a place to
belittle and berate others. Not only off topic but you are being prejudice
and hateful. I will find an organization that is truly able to help me with
my most beloved felines. This surely isn't the forum for those that want to

Yes, Patty Mora, my business partner designed the site.

We are Pet Girls, the Super Heros for pets!

You can make A LOT of money petsitting, as a matter of fact, I spend over
$1000. per month just on cat food & litter, not including my vet bills.

I am not even taking anymore new clients.

That is great taking over an alreday established business, and I am sure your
friend will let you know what everyone's "quirks" are.

And don't be afriad to drop clients, some of them can REALLY be a pain in the
butt.

If it has somethign to do w/ the animal (s), that's ok w/ me.

It's people who I constantly have to ask for my money and the ones that always
want a discount but add all kinds of extra stuff, it's not worth your time or
aggrevation.

OT: To Susan regarding Ice Cubes

2007-08-03 Thread Caroline Kaufmann

Susan:
Our litter of "normal" house cats I had growing up also were fans of the ice cubes in water- mostly just to play with.  We had one, my favorite, Rambo, who would literally sit there at the water bowl and stare at the ice cube, touch it with his paw, and drink water forever!!!  Hours!  He LOVED it.  I don't know if you have tried this or not, but you know those re-usable drink decorator ice cubes?  They come in colorful shapes and sizes- we had neon-colored, fish-shaped ones.  It's basically just water incased in plastic that freezes in the freezer and cools your drink when you plop them in and you rinse them off and reuse.  Anyway, we started using the fish shapes in the cats water since we didn't really use them anyway, and they loved it!  Especially if you have one of the drinking fountains with flowing water-- the water makes the
fish move around on the surface.  Rambo loved it.  He spent even more time playing with, watching, touching, and drinking water after we started adding the fish!

Hey Susan,

One of the important things to know about lysine is
that if it has the preservative propylene glycol, as
some made for humans do, it can cause blood issues in
cats, so just make sure you're using pure lysine.

Sorry Wendy, I didn't do an intro post.

Yes, I know, I just joined the list and threw myself into the mix.

I've covered a lot about myself, so, is the intro still needed?

Malone and Susan,

I apologize for not welcoming you guys to the group.
I didn't get any intro posts for either of you, but
when I go into the archives, it looks like I am not
getting about 60% of the posts. I need to email the
site administrator and ask why. I am trying to catch
up in the archives.

Susan, I read several of your posts, but for some
reason, I thought you were the other Susan. You
sounded like you'd been here forever!

So again, welcome to the group. And please don't

To Susan re. lysine

2007-07-02 Thread wendy
Hey Susan,

One of the important things to know about lysine is
that if it has the preservative propylene glycol, as
some made for humans do, it can cause blood issues in
cats, so just make sure you're using pure lysine.

Re: To Susan D.

2007-06-29 Thread Susan Dubose
I agree, Wendy.

The full story is on the Bexar County Humane Society website in their
archives. Maybe 2002. feb. was the month.

We have some photos, or used to, on our Siamese Rescue Ausitn branch
website.

Princess Purrla is not in the photos, she is camera shy.

It was an eye opening experience for me, the first of many situations I
found myself in, when working in a shelter and being "on call" to help.

One of the important things was, when Sheila, (Dr. Smith's wife) Julia w/
ASR & 2 other co workers went to the SA shelter help them, it was important
to make that their Staff was taken care of too.

They were out trapping the cats, and we went there everyday from Asutin
(once again, in really bad icey weather, unusual for this part of the
country), and we would intake the cats straight from the traps and bathe
them (they were covered in blood, mud & feces), draw blood for testing,
lance abcesses (many had these, even form injection sites or from being
bitten by each other, they were canabalizing), and imputing the info into
the database.

The rest of their clinic staff still had to perform the day to day ops of
the shelter, since it is a fairly big shelter.

In otherwords, we drove down to do the dirty work for them, the staff was
"punch drunk" from the whole incident.

That's what it is about, teamwork...

And making sure people are taking care of themselves, too.

Susan,

I just read your rant about people doing those
horrible things to cats. I am so sorry you have had
to witness things like this, and even sorrier that
those kitties have had to live (or not...) through it.
That man in SA...I never heard the story, but what a
monster. What a horrible, horrible, horrible person.
I think it's just that they ate him. They probably
wanted to after he did what he did to them. I hope
all those that are left have loving homes, and the
ones that didn't make it died peacefully. Sometimes I
just don't understand people. That's why it is so
important for us to be kind to one another here. If
we can't find that here, we are in trouble.

Prayers going out for a stop to abuse of our feline
friends.

:)

Ummm... Really makes me wonder (more!!)
Right now, all I can say is that I am "ever so thankful" my Puma is holding
his own..
FIP is such a nasty disease
Went thru an epidemic at home, years ago while fostering.. And, I did
end up losing some of my purr-sonal babies
Saw so much at shelter
Now, since MVA, I am NOT fostering or adding to my clan...(Other than
Charity, who still is separate. And, Timmy, Adira, Autumn & Moonshade are
separate, living "the life" in my master bedroom & master bath...) The rest
of

They all know love, have a fur-ever home, so at least that counts for

No sense getting myself all worked up over what may or may not be...

2007-06-04 Thread MaryChristine

>

Dear Dr. Susan Little what do you think of this test?

There is a company in the US that has been bombarding vets and
breeders and cat owners for over a year about their test kit for AGP.
AGP is an acute phase protein and can be useful as PART of the
diagnostics for FIP. AGP is not specific for FIP, it can be elevated
in any feline inflammatory disease. It is not routinely available in
North America, but is more commonly used in Europe.

I have no idea if this company makes a reliable test kit. I am
suspicious of their marketing approach.

Susan and traping Sissy

2007-02-15 Thread Nina

Susan,
Have you tried a drop trap yet? It sounds like little Sissy would be
able to be caught with one. If you guys don't have access to one in
your rescue circle it would definitely benefit you to build one of your
own. Alley Cat Allies has plans for one using pvc pipe, but I made mine
out of wood and garden netting. Here's the plans that Bruce used for
ours: http://www.droptrapdesign.blogspot.com/
We modified it a bit, put wheels on the side to make it easier to
transport, hooks to attach the regular trap to the sliding trap door for
when I'm trapping alone etc. I use it for those very hard to catch guys
and even when they aren't motivated by the bait, they generally can't
help checking it out, then wham! I've got 'em!

There's also something called a "super trap" designed by a lady here in
the LA area. It's huge, and hard to transport, but if you have enough
open space, it's a sure bet that you'd be able to catch the most wily of
ferals using it. It's also good for catching more than one at a time.
Here's the plans and an article about it:
http://www.amrt.net/feraltrap/trap.htm

Good luck, let us know how you do,
Nina

laughing at me, saying she wasn't going to get in any trap. I caught
another cat and Sissy was sitting by him, right outside the trap,

Susan,

I am so sorry to hear about Buddy. You were so good
to him. I am still hoping for a miracle though that
it wasn't him that was hit by the car. I really hope
that you will be able to find Sissy and that she
trusts you to take care of her. I hate that she might
have lost her beloved brother. Maybe she will turn to
you for direction.

I am also sorry to that Leader is sick. I am hoping
he will pull through.

Thanks Wendy, I am better but not 100%.  I know I'll never stop missing her or worrying about the mistakes I may or may not have made, but the pain has been more manageable this week.  We got her urn back on Tuesday and it gave us some closure.  The presentation was so beautiful.  Along with the urn (a little black urn for a little black cat) we got a certificate of individual cremation and an angel cat pin, all packaged in a gift bag decorated with a little white bow and some tiny paper roses.  I've been wearing the pin on my ID lanyard at work.  If anyone needs this service in the Middle Tennessee area, I highly recommend Littlest Angels Pet Crematory.  Our vet recommended her and her listing in the phone book was also the one I chose by sheer gut instinct: "Individual cremations performed with care in a country setting", just that, the name and the phone number.  The voice on the answering machine is so calm and soothing, unlike the other
place I called where I got the standard "I'm either on the phone or with a client".  That was such a turnoff, but it was no surprise as the ad made it sound like a funeral home for pets.We got a lovely card from the specialist which she wrote and signed personally.  Everyone there was so wonderful.  I've already referred someone who needed a vet in that part of town.Love to all and hugs to all kittiesBeccawendy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I just wanted to see how all of you are doing sinceyou all have lost a furbaby so recently. Thank you, Nina.  She really was a cutie - probably ugly to people who didn't understand what a fight it was to live so long being born positive.  But beautiful to me.   She'd gotten over a URI and I'd have bet money on her having survived another crisis that night.  I think she knew how much she was loved, tho, and that I did my best to keep her alive.  She is curled up with Gloria's Lancelot now, with her little head resting on his.   Two such very much loved babies whose moms fought so hard for them.Nina <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Susan,I didn't realize it was you that lost your Carlita. Hi Susan!

I have heard from Gloria and I'll tell you the same thing I told her...I
feel extremely fortunate that I've got such a wonderful network of
friends all over the country! Thank you so much for the support! As of
now, we have reservations at the Motel 6 off of Hwy. 30 in Little
Rock...we will probably leave here early tomorrow morning and (fingers
crossed that our house is spared serious damage) head back to Houston on
Monday. Although, we may leave sooner depending on the evacuation
orders...right now it's voluntary, but that is quickly going to
change...we're in a low lying area by the Bay of Galveston (elevation
only 16 ft.) and they're predicting a storm surge close to 20 ft.!

I'm happy we've got a place to stay (and wonderful offers) for the time
being...but I'll be honest, I'm scared to death that we're going to lose
our home! I don't know if our flood insurance company will take pity on
us as we only signed up for insurance about 2 weeks ago (usually doesn't
take effect for a month). Please keep our humble little home in your
thoughts!! :)

And here is my cell phone #, as well: 281-229-1279...it's such a relief
to know that other Feleuk parents are nearby in case of an emergency!!
Thank you so much, again...

Thank you so much, again...

again, somebody has contacted me about helping outa leukemia positive
kitty. Sorry to always bedropping these on you guys but I just got married
andthen! came home and adopted 2 more cats (1 FIV+ and 1FeLV+) the
next day. I'm out of room and I wanted towrite and see if anybody can take
this cat. I'll setup transport if anybody has room for him. Here
is a copy of the e-mail I got about him. I alsohave pictures of him that I
will send to anybody thatis interested. I need to find somebody within
acouple days or she will be euthanizing him. He is inRochester, NY but
I'm willing to set up transport upto 8-10 hours away. (copy of
e-mail) Dear Amy: Per Judy Newman's (Habitat for Cats?)
request, I amwriting you to ask for your help, if you are able toat
all. You have no idea how much I appreciate thework you do for animals.
You are an angel. Judyasked me to give you as much information about
thiscat as I could. I have been feeding feral/homeless cats for
over 3years now, every single morning at 5:30 am. (beforethe owners
get there, as they! are not the nicestpeople when it comes to compassion
for these animals),through rain and snow, behind Lorraine's Restaurant
onCulver and East Main. I have seen quite a fewdifferent animals, but
the one I am now speaking ofjust came about last Tuesday. After putting
the foodand water out, this cute cat let me come close to it,then
actually allowed me to scratch his head. As Istarted to get up, he sidled
up to my leg and startedto follow me back to my car. The next morning, I
didnot see him, but on Thursday, with cage in the backseat and a towel
to grab it with, he allowed me topick it up and I brought it home to my
back bedroom, where, although a bit frightened, he let me pet himand he
gobbled up food. His demeanor is sweet. At first, I thought
itcouldn't be homeless due to its sweet way, but thegreasy coat, and
matted fur, and malnourished bodythat the veterinarian told me told me
this morning ithad, con! vinced me otherwise. At home I took
awashcloth and tried to bathe it the best I could. Heeven has started
to play with strings. I had made an appointment for it on Monday,
today, the22nd of August for its shots and neutering. I havesix other
cats whom I have rescued over the years. Iwas planning on trying to find a
home for this onebecause as you know, its hard on the other cats in
thehouse - especially when they are all so territorialalready! I
brought the homeless kitty in this morningand the vet immediately called
me to say they had ittested and it has feline leukemia. Which broke
myheart. I called Humane Society as I have heard ofsanctuaries for
these cats. They referred me to JudyNewman. The reason this breaks
my heart the most, is that thiscat is less than a year old, has very
beautiful green, loving eyes, purrs for me, plays with me, loves to
beheld and rub his nose against your face. He is also! litter trained.
He is like a black/brown stripedmedium to long haired beauty. I love him
already somuch, but know I can't keep him with the other cats inthe
house. The vet did the neutering procedure this morning, andgave
him his rabies and distemper shot. They alsocleaned his mats out of fur. I
had him scheduled for4 pm. to be put to sleep, but then received the
callfrom Judy an hour ago saying there may be hope, withyou. And I
know that is a slight chance, but Amy, youhave no idea how much you have
helped already, knowingsomeone out there cares about something that
theyhaven't even seen. If you had by now, you would be inlove. He is
just the sweetest. I called the vet andasked them to give him the name
"Homey" for now, sothat he at least will have had a name in his
shortlife. I just called the vet and told them I would bepicking up
the cat today at 4pm, at least for a fewdays, and am going to take him ho!
me and give him somegreat meals and loving, until I hear back from you.

Du….

I just remembered – I did send an
email out asking if someone could take care of  8-week old FeLV boy –
at this time, the owner is not sure if he is transient or virnemic (?) –
but she was planning to euthanize him if he continues to test positive – and
I wanted to help him find a home for him..

The fact the kittens tested a "faint positive" (an ELISA, right?) is probably
an indication of exposure and some virus present (both the ELISA and IFA
detect anitgen from replicating virus) but may still be an earlier stage of
infection so there is a chance with good diet and immune support these kittens
can
clear the virus. A truly "false positive" on the ELISA would be for viral
antigen to be detected when none was present. What is more likely, given the
sensitivity of the ELISA test which can detect even minute amounts of antigen,
is
that "faint" positive results indicate an early stage of infection, and that
cats/kittens who initially test postive, then later test negative, were able to
clear the virus, or, the infection could have become latent.

If the other cats in the foster household are healthy adults, I would not be
very worried that the kittens may pass the virus to them, but be most
concerned that the kittens get the best possible diet and immune support to
help their
immune system fight off the virus. Any further assaults, be it emotional,
environmental or from anything the other cats may bring to the table, to their
immune system should be minimized.

A negative IFA at this point could confirm an infection has not progressed to
the point of no return and there is still a good chance to clear it, but
would also represent the significant stress of a blood draw. If one has the
resources, a good strategy is to ask the vet or tech to draw enough blood
initially
so that if the ELISA result is positive, then an IFA can then be run to
confim it as either stage 4 or beyond, or still in stage 1-3.

My advice would be to transition those kittens to a raw, natural diet (or the
best commercial food possible such as Wellness or Innova, etc.) with good
immune support supplementation such as Transfer Factor, Vit. C, CoQ10, etc. and
try to keep their lives as stress-free as possible, which would include no, or
mininal, vaccines. Do keep them indoors and away from any cats who go
outdoors that may bring unwanted pathogens to bear. I would then retest them in
45-60
days.

Here's hoping...
