[Finale] Finale 2012 centering a single whole note in a measure
I’m running Finale 2012 on an iMac. In the last measure of each movement of a piece I’m working on, there is a single whole not. How can I center the whole note in the measure (the whole note is now aligned to the left of the measure). Thanks for your help. [Finale] Finale 2012, Mac 10.9.5 and MIDI
For some unknown reason this morning, something happened to my MIDI connection where I could not enter notes in speedy entry in Finale 2012 on my iMac (OS 10.9.5). I unplugged my MIDI interface, went to the “MIDI Studio” window, and was able to get back the ability to enter notes using my synthesizer in Speedy Note entry. HOWEVER…now when I enter notes, I get what sounds like a percussion sound (perhaps a marimba) each time I enter a different pitch in Finale. How do I get rid of this percussive sound when I enter notes now in Speedy? Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom. [Finale] Finale and Mac OS
I currently use Finale 2012 on my iMac with OS 10.9.5. I am seriously thinking about updating the OS on my Mac to High Sierra (not sure what the OS number is for that), and also upgrading to the most current version of Finale. If I do upgrade from 10.9.5 to High Sierra, will I still be able to access and use my Finale files created in earlier versions (FinMac 2008, 20012)? Thanks in advance for your advice. [Finale] an 18th Century horn question
Greetings Andy, I hope all is well with you! I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on the horn parts in a sacred latin work for chorus and orchestra by Giambattista (Padre) Martini from Bologna that I recently came across. The horn parts are notated on the bottom staff of the manuscript, without any indication of what key the horn parts should be in. I’m assuming they are written in bass clef, although one is not written in the score for the horns. Are they horns in F? Should I rewrite them in treble clef, top line and second space? Thanks for your help, both now and in the past. I’m beginning to think the problem is with my MIDI synthesizer and not Finale. Even with Finale closed, when I press any note on my synth, I get the mallet sound after I release the note on the synth keyboard. [Finale] 2012 Finale (Mac) lyric issue
When using the lyric tool to enter lyrics in Finale 2012 for Mac, I have noticed that most individual syllables of text are centered under each note, as they should be (and always were in Finale 2008). However, there are many syllables of text that are not centered under the notes to which they are attached, but rather a little to the right of center under the notes to which they are attached. Is there some setting in Fin2012 I need to adjust so that every syllable of text is perfectly centered under each note? thanks, Martin ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu https://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale To unsubscribe from finale send a message to: finale-unsubscr...@shsu.edu
Re: [Finale] 2012 Finale (Mac) lyric issue
John, I tried all of these, and there’s no difference. It’s very strange that some syllables are centered, and some are not. The ones that are not centered often affect the appearance (or lack of) of word extensions. In those cases, I have to manually drag the syllables to the left in order to get enough room for the word extensions to appear. This was never an issue in Fin2008. Re: [Finale] 2012 Finale (Mac) lyric issue
Christopher, It just seems like a lot of words are placed too far to the right under a note, forcing me to nudge the word back to the left so I can get a word extension to appear before the next note/word. This was never an issue for me in Fin2008. Plus, there seems to be no rhyme or reason why some text is centered and others are too far to the right. Martin Sent from my iPhone On Aug 5, 2015, at 1:14 PM, Christopher Smith christopher.sm...@videotron.ca wrote: As I remember, older versions of Finale were NOT dealing with melismas correctly. A syllable that starts a melisma (in other words, one that would use a word extension, but also one that is followed by a hyphen) are SUPPOSED to be left aligned, not centered. Also, any syllable with more than five letters is supposed to be pushed right a bit, so that the third letter is centered. I think new versions of Finale do it correctly. If you want something different than the way Finale defaults to, I'm pretty sure you can find the relevant options in the Lyric Tool. If you still have trouble, write back. [Finale] Word extensions in Finale 2012
I am running Finale 2012 on an iMac and am running into a constant problem with word extensions (I never had this problem with Finale 2008). For some unknown (to me) reason, sometimes word extensions appear correctly and then other times, word extensions do not appear on a final syllable of text with two or more notes. If I manually nudge the text syllable enough to the left, the word extension will appear. What I’ve noticed with this is that sometimes, the final syllable of text is too far to the right, even when I do a layout update. I’m assuming there’s something wrong in the documents items, but I can’t figure out what it is. Thanks for any help you can give me. [Finale] Repeat tool and Da Capo in FinMac 2012
I have a two movement work. At the end of the first movement, there is a Da Capo marking, with the repeat of the first movement happening before the second movement begins. I used the Repeat tool successfully to place the Da Capo marking in the last measure of the first movement, and upon playback, the music correctly goes back to measure one and begins playing. Now for my question…in the repeat of the Da Capo, how do I get the playback to stop on beat 3 of measure 73 (there are 90 measures in the first movement), rather than continuing to play to the very end of the movement (measure 90). In addition, after the Da Capo repeat, I want the playback to continue on to the second movement. I’ve read the online manual, but I sure I’m missing something here. [Finale] 18th Century horn notation and playback on Finale 2012
I am currently preparing a modern performing edition of an 18th Century Italian sacred work for chorus, strings, oboes and two horns. Looking at the written horn parts, they appear to be in D, since the key signature for the composition is D major (2 sharps), and the horn parts are written with no key signature (first note is written on third space above middle C, which should sound concert D fourth line. When I enter the horn parts around the second and third spaces above middle C (in treble clef), the note heads appear in yellow. The C and D above middle C playback correctly, but the fourth space E (and anything higher) do not play back. The playback is a step higher than written, which works in the key of D major. Is there something is Score Manager transposition that I can do to get all the notes to appear in black and play back? Should the playback of these notes sound an octave lower hovering around middle C? All you horn specialists (and I know there are some of you out there who have been of great help to me in the past), please weigh in on this and help me figure this out. Thanks! I have been using Finale since version 1.0, and therefore have been trained from the very beginning to do all of my measurements in EVPUs. For the last several years I have been using Finale 2008 and able to complete all of my projects in EVPUs. In Page Layout Tool, when I go to “edit system margins”, the boxes show only inches, NOT EVPUs. I spoke to tech support at Make Music/Finale this morning, and they were able to re-create my situation. I was told this is indeed a problem, and is as well in Finale 2014. [Finale] Brand new iMac and Finale question
My old iMac from 2008 died and I was forced into buying a brand new iMac, OS X 10.9.4. I previously used Finale 2008 without any trouble. All of my files (and applications) from my old Mac were migrated over from an external hard drive. I was able to reconnect my MIDI interface and input notes from my synthesizer to a finale 2008 document, and am able to playback using Garritan sounds. All seemed fine…EXCEPT…none of the text (lyrics, dynamics) appear when I open previous files (although all of the notes are there, and there are hyphens but no lyrics). For the heck of it, I created a brand new file successfully, then went to lyric tool and added some text. As I type in one syllable at a time, that syllable appears, but then disappears. Again, all that remains are some hyphens. When I clicked on each note that should have a syllable of text, the syllable appears and then vanishes. I went into the pull down menu and went into “edit text” (or edit lyrics, whatever it’s called) and there was absolutely nothing in the large box. I was unable to type anything directly into that box. [Finale] 18th Century horn question
I have a manuscript (combined choral/orchestral score) that has two horn in A parts indicated for the piece which is in A major. So three sharps for the concert pitch (C) instruments, no signature for the horn parts. No problem. The horn parts are written with a double treble clef, which I understand to mean sounding an octave lower than written, similar to the tenor voice part that uses a treble clef with an 8 underneath. The first written pitch in the manuscript is 3rd space C and middle C, for the first and second horn parts. Using Finale transposition as horn in A, the actual sound is a third below the written. Re: [Finale] 18th Century horn question
Raymond, The first horn part stays between first G above middle C up to second E above middle C, and the second horn part goes from middle C up to the second D above middle C. As I responded privately to someone about this, I'm wondering if the double treble clef may really be an issue here. Both horns are written on a single staff. I also noticed that the two oboe parts are written on a single staff and are also notated at the beginning of the staff with a double treble clef. I'm thinking that the double clefs on both the oboe and horn staff are merely to say that there are two different parts written on a single staff. Re: [Finale] default rest question
Ryan, I checked the Dolmetsch book, and if I read it correctly, yes, double whole rests are the standard in 4/2 time. The piece that I am editing is a multimovement work, with the first movement being in 4/4 time, and the last movement being the one in 4/2 time. I may have to resort to speedy entry and put in the double whole rests. Thanks, Martin On May 16, 2014, at 2:38 PM, Ryan wrote: You're correct that the convention is to use a double whole rest in 4/2 (and possibly some other large meters). I'd say that today that practice is somewhat antiquated. Players will instantly understand that they are to remain silent for the entire measure if there's a regular whole rest. That being said, if you really want the double whole rest as the Default Whole Rest in Finale, go to Doc OptionsNotes RestsRest Characters pop up menu. Choose Default Whole Rest. Select the double whole rest character (it's in slot 227 on my machine). Note that this will change all default whole rests for every measure, regardless of the time signature. If you're working in only 4/2, then this is probably OK. AFAIK, there is no way to have Finale automatically use double whole rests in 4/2 and regular whole rests in all other meters in the same document. [Finale] Finale 2008 and new Mac Snow Leopard OS...update
I just spoke to someone at tech support at Finale headquarters, and asked them if they had done, or were planning to do any testing to see if Finale 2008 would work with the new Mac Snow Leopard OS. The gentleman to whom I spoke said their only commitment would be to make sure Finale 2010 works perfectly in Snow Leopard. They absolutely would not be testing 2008 (and I assume any other version earlier than 2010) to see if it would work with Snow Leopard. He did say there probably would not be a lot of problems, but there was no guarantee of that. If anyone on this list who currently uses Finale 2008 on a Mac, and is planning on trying it with Snow Leopard, could they either post to the entire list, or privately to me, how things work out? Until I know for sure that Finale 2008 will work under Snow Leopard just as it presently does for me under OS 10.5.8, I won't be upgrading to Snow Leopard anytime soon. And to think it took me years to finally jump from Finale 2003 to Finale 2008. That's all well and good for the two outer movements, which are in the key of D for this piece. [Finale] 18th Century Horn question
Are there any 18th Century horn specialists on this list? I have an autograph manuscript of a combined choral/orchestral work from 18th Century Italy. The piece is in D major and the two horn parts are written in alto clef. There are two sharps written in for the horns, so I will assume these are horns in C. For the first horn, the first note (in alto clef) is F#, written on fourth space. For the second horn, the first note is D (in alto clef), written on the third space. When played as written, will these sound as F# and D right above middle C, or will they sound in a different octave? Will a trained modern horn player understand how to play this, or should I re- notate these two horn parts in treble clef? Thanks for your wisdom. Included in the instrumentation was a Contra Bassoon, which was used only (as best I could see) in the last movement, doubling the Third Bone part. I don't have a score to the work, so can anyone tell me if that is a standard instrumentation, or an edition of which I've not heard before, or perhaps the conductor just wanted the bass sound reinforced? Dennis Speaking as a bassoonist, I can assure you that any notation you use will be unfamiliar, and so *must* be accompanied with a verbal instruction such as reed only or the like. As a composer, I would use X-shaped noteheads, add the instruction with reed only, and place the notes on the middle line of the staff. On any subsequent recurrences, I would shorten the instruction just to reed. If I wanted the buzz to vary in pitch, I would eliminate the staff lines and place the various (X-shaped) noteheads at higher or lower levels within the blank space. I would use this same notation for the oboe, and for clarinet/sax/ brass mouthpiece played alone (except of course that the instruction would be mouthpiece alone). [Finale] Full measure rests
I am working on an 18th Century edition from an autograph manuscript (dated 1769). The final movement of this choral/orchestral work is a fugue in cut time (4/2 time). Although the autograph manuscript notates a full measure rest with a double whole rest, I was wondering if I should use that in a modern edition or go with the Finale default whole rest for a blank measure. Also, if I use the double whole rest for a blank measure, the rest is all the over to the left. How would I go about centering the double whole rest? By the way, I'm using Finale 2008 on an iMac. Re: [Finale] Full measure rests
I suppose I could put in two whole rests in such measures, but that is just not as professional looking as the single double whole rest. What would happen if I entered a whole rest first (then making it invisible), then a double whole rest on the third beat (and when the dialogue box comes up asking me if i want to leave the measure as is or tie it over into the next measure, telling it to leave as is). Would this mess up playback or spacing? TGTools appears to figure out how wide the measure is and apply an EVPU offset to the rest. The offset is the same in score and parts, so if there are different measure widths, or if you later change measure widths, you're out of luck. And would this not also break up multimeasure rests? Well, simply entering the double whole rest breaks MM rests, regardless of what you do with the positioning. Sorry, I guess I was just answering the detail question of how to position the rest, not really thinking about the larger issues.
