I'm really confident that any venue Fjord people have will have this same
family feeling that has been present at Libby and the Fun Fest. This is just
how Fjord people are! After all, home is where the heart is and any place
Fjord people gather is home for the Fjord family. I am so excited about
both our shows this year!

Hi all,

This year PNFPG will undertake a new location for our International Fjord
Horse Show. It will be in Davenport Washington from August 14 through
16th.

There are lots of riding classes, fun classes and lots of driving classes,
single horse, pairs and 4 in-hands. We will have a pot luck and auction
on
Saturday evening. Davenport is a small farming town about 30 miles west
of

Spokane Washington on highway 2. Very easy to get to. We're hoping to
recreate the wonderful atmosphere that Libby always had. We're hoping the
change of venue will attract some that never made it Libby due to the
distance or the dates since it was always after school started. The
contact people for this show are Holly Finnoe and Susie Sabatini.

We are also doing our 2nd annual Fun Fest in Pasco Washington June 26-28.
This is an open show so everyone is welcome. Bring your non Fjord friends
and show them what we all love! There are clinics scheduled on Friday
with
showing on Saturday and Sunday. Everyone that was there last year had a
lot

of fun and the non Fjord folks commented on how nice and friendly we Fjord
folks were. Gretchen Payne is the contact person for this show.

All the info on both shows is available at PNFPG.org, click on the
calendar

tab and scroll down. The show packets, class descriptions, everything is
all there. We'd love to see a bunch of you guys at either or both of
these

shows.

Come help us start new memories and traditions.

I was at Libby for my 2nd visit. I thought it was a wonderful event. The
parade was terrific fun, the Lasseseesseeens (?) costumes were a
delight. It was a pleasure seeing all the farm equipment demo'ed, and Jeff
Lisa Pederson did a great job with their four-in-hand.

Libby is a gorgeous venue, and the show has a very intimate feel to it.
There was time to meet people and talk to them. Plus there's the
entertainment - watching Ron D. Dancing at the potluck is a sight I'll never
forget!

Kudos to all who worked on the show to bring it about.

I'll have a public site with pictures and video's up tomorrow.

I am sorry for all the negativity. I personally really like Fred and Lois
and
I wish Lois better health. They were the first Fjord people that we met
when
we went to Libby for the first time. They have always treated us very
well.

Libby this year was smaller but none the less wonderful. The competitors
were

happy and very friendly to each other. Sharing equipment and helping each
other out. Just like Libby always is. The weather was spectacular and
according to Dick Springs, so was the fishing. We had a good crowd of
people

come to see the show on Saturday and I think that they enjoyed it.

We followed Jeff and Lisa and Laura up I 15 and barring a few problems,
which
Jeff fixed with his usual smile. The horses are so patient. I love
Fjords.
After bedding them down on Thursday, we sat around and visited with
everyone.
This is one of the highlights of Libby. Met Rune Lassessen(sp) for the
first
time and saw Catherine's Buhund puppies. They are pretty awesome. We
missed
seeing Amy. The show went very smoothly and for the first time we saw
what
Howard's farm implements could really do. That man is amazing. Hauling
all

the implements around in that big red trailer. He needs a blue ribbon for
effort.

The Nordicfest people fed us the first night and every morning there were
Huckleberry pancakes. Back on my diet now.

It was great to see new horses and watch their abilities. These Fjords
are a
joy to be around. Jeff and Lisa Pedersen are wonderful friends and so
willing
to share what they know and do. We ask tons of questions and they don't
seem
to tire of passing on their experience and wisdom. It was great to see
Laura
again. We met her at Winona and she has become a good friend. Just don't
get

her going on trivial pursuit. She has an abundance of little known facts.

Sorry this is so long, just had to get it out.

I spent several sleepless hours (between 10pm and 3 AM last night!)
trying to figure out what should be done about Northwest Fjord
 activities. Gail

I agree Gail, this is a disturbing turn of events. From the
perspective of those who have longtime loved the Libby show, and those
who feel outrage over a major injustice done the Packs by the club---
it appears the PNFPG club as we once knew it has gone amuck. First,
their deposit on the ML show accommodation before any member consensus
was taken, then, the rule that anyone voting on the ML proposition
must attend in person in order to vote. Those members adjacently handy
and highly motivated easily passed the proposal. Then, just to be sure
there was no further opposition to their triumph.. a club rule was
passed that no disparaging word, by any member, might be spoken in
their direction.

This places those of us who have been left behind in somewhat of a
predicament, if we dare protest we can be cast out of the club, and
we need that membership to enter a show. And, in order to have any
kind of representation in the club, one must travel to the meetings a
great distance. Small wonder we feel bound, gagged, and victimized. No
other breed show in America dictates their members words and behavior
OFF-showsite. We pay dues but have no vote--taxation without
representation, and we have no freedom of speech.. sounds very
un-American. If it wasn't for Steve McIlree allowing us the privilege
of speaking here on this list, the majority of the Fjord world would
not even be aware of our plight. Thank you. It occurs to me that it is
unfortunate that the NFHR has no tie or oversight over regional clubs.
(The president of this club does not even belong to the registry?)

To my knowledge, those who support Libby have wanted the Moses Lake
effort to succeed, not at the sacrifice of Libby of course--but
apparently this good will is not reciprocal, Moses Lake proponents are
not satisfied to do well-- they further require the destruction of the
Libby show, using every possible means to ensure that end.. by
arbitrarily scheduling their show just prior to the Libby show, and by
once again publishing negative scare rhetoric about asbestos just
prior to the show.

It does appear to us that the club has mutantly evolved into an entity
that cares nothing about some of their least deemed members. When Gene
found out about the Packs being refused entrance to the shows this
year, he said, I'm not going! We feel a profound sense of injustice
for the Packs--they have not been professionally and ethically dealt
with as should be required by any club. A 3-yr penalty, or maybe more,
for alleged unsafe behavior AFTER show hours is nothing short of
ludicrous ! particularly so because Packs were not granted a hearing.

If the club now feels pleased that some western breeders and members
have been squeezed out of their ranks, (the list is growing) there has
to be something basically flawed with that club! Idealism has taken
precedence over realism, exclusivity over inclusivity. You've heard of
the cart before the horse, well this is the club before the horse, a
club more important than the Fjord horse--because if the Fjord horse
is our purpose for existing we would be making every possible
extension for their all-inclusive individual good, not thinking of
ways to exclude some. Plus, the overall benefit of the Fjord
brotherhood should be paramount, to promote Fjords we must
additionally promote their people.

These unfortunate events can not be re-wound, all we can do is focus
on how we might best resolve this sorry impasse.. it is time to make
lemonade out of the lemon we've been dealt. Obviously, those in
authority over the club have no desire for diplomacy or negotiated
compromise, therefore a house divided against itself cannot stand.

I am NOT speaking on behalf of the Libby show, but it personally seems
to me that it would be far better to split the club in two than
continue incremental losses to our Fjord support at Libby. Your
comment about the gas and distance is a good point. We need our own
regional club, one that puts Fjords first and foremost, one that cares
about everyone who cares about Fjords, which would even include
dissentious factions-- if we are truly to regard EVERY Fjord. =)))
We're all for starting that club-- one that welcomes member opinions,
allows everyone a mailed vote, one that earns respect through fair
dealing, courtesy, and is without discrimination. Granted, perhaps one
less sophisticated, but maybe with an acronym everyone can remember,
hah.

Now that we have been stripped of our assets this may be difficult,
but it is not impossible-it was done once upon a time and it can be
done again.

Hi all,

There is no reason not to have two shows. However, the Moses Lake show needs
to be in June, possibly in conjunction with the PNFPG Spring meeting. This
will solve two problems. First - weather [this year's was Not typical, it's
usually Much hotter in August]. Any local will tell you this. Second - it
would not pose such a problem for exhibitors who can't attend two shows so
close together, thus having to choose between them.

Also, this change might allow some healing within the organization.

Are you referring to the Lumby Deposit near you-- in saying you wish
you'd seen it years ago? I'm very sorry for you folks also -with mica
(vermiculite) in your back yard. You're so right that awareness is
crucial, thank goodness we have that now.

I saw the documentary you refer to quite some time back, it is mostly
of a historical nature, because there has since been enormous clean up
of every trace. Last year when we had this conversation, regards the
Libby Fjord Horse Show, I contacted the Mayor of Libby and one of the
County Commissioners; they emphatically assured me there is no risk
whatsoever in the occasional guest (nor even for residents) because of
the fastidious clean-up.

Any vermiculite that made it into Libby, in the past, was unwittingly
transported there before anyone knew the hazard, it is not just an
element lying about any-old-where. It was removed from a pit mine
about 7 miles from Libby and brought in by individuals for insulation.
Every building in Libby has been combed for any trace and removed by
the EPA.

I suppose there would be no more risk in coming to Libby than going to
your farm near Lumby for a driving vacation, assuming that mica has
not been unknowingly broadcast. In doing research on vermiculite I
came across the Lumby Deposit and would be glad to share references
with you.

I spent a year and a half working in a vet office in Vancouver BC back in
1969. We used 10 x 13 baking pans (lasagna size) as litter boxes, with
about an eighth to a quarter cup of vermiculite in each to entice the caged
kitties to use the pans as litter boxes. I handled a lot of that stuff.

Mark,
I thought that was what America is all about: Lobby for your cause

If I want to lobby to move the show to some other location, how would you
recommend I go about it, or is that just not allowed in your part of America?

As far as someone putting down their own money to hold a time spot for a show,
I thought was pretty well explained as to why that was done, if the whole post
was read.

It seemed to make good sense to me to actually have a place to have the show if
you were going to make a motion to move the show and that motion passed. It
would be ignorant to me to go through all the motions of moving the show and
then finding out that there were no dates available to have the show where you
just moved it.

Unlike you and others that are so harsh in your comments when it concerns
someone else's opinion, I am trying to be open minded to what is being asked of
us to consider.

To do that I need information. Information like what was posted by Mr Rosen.
Does that mean that I'll be basing my whole opinion on that information, No,
but every little bit helps.

Why don't you instead of being so inflammatory, give me some information to
back your opinion of why we should keep the show in Libby. Just because,
doesn't cut it for me.

These kinds of posts are not winning any support from my wife or I to keep the
show in Libby.

Consider us new blood, not afraid of new ideas but not lost to the ideas of
tradition either.

People still live there and quite well and healthy. I don't think 1
week a year is going to kill anybody or their horses. Also someone
argued that the weather in Libby is terrible, sounds like the recent
show in Winonna was very similar climate to what has been in Libby in
the past. Maybe that show should be also moved to Washington, then you
wouldn't have to drive very far to that either.

I think this sort of email to argue a point is pretty lame. There have
been environmental disasters many places in the nation. The situation
in Libby pertains mostly to the people that worked in a certain business
at a certain site and the cleanup of that site. I bet nobody from the
Fjord show visited that site and got contaminated when they went to
Libby. If the EPA thought it was such a risk they would have evacuated
the people that live there 365 days a year, long ago, way before some
little group that visits for 5 days out of the year. It really makes me
wonder why people are lobbying so hard all of a sudden to move the show,
other than your pocket book and you not having to drive 7 hours. It's
all about me, me, me mentality. If you want to move the Libby show, why
don't you just have a spring show in Washington and quit trying to lobby

good for promoting the Fjord breed as a Fall show would, and then it
would be all about the Fjord, Fjord, Fjord. Your post seems like it has
a little political slant. I'm sure we could dig up a little dirt on any

I guess I got a little off the hoof, so to speak by your labeling
people, or name calling, whatever you will, as DIEHARDS. I don't
appreciate the name calling bit so got a little hot in my reply,...
sorry. The article you sent out was not researched by yourself as to
what really is going on in Libby and the hazard that is involved for,
visitors, which is probably not any higher than the radon or mold or
gang violence in some other motel or city. To just throw out negative
articles to lobby your point without research is very political in my
opinion. How you lobby is to get ALL the facts, not just ones that are
swayed to your opinion.

On my own involvement with the NW Fjord Horse Show, I personally haven't
been involved with it, except as a spectator, I hope to be in the
future. If it moves to Washington, I would probably not go and instead
go to Blue Earth, as Libby is about a 5.5 hour drive right now, and
Washington would maybe be 9 hours, so I would probably add just a few
hours and go to Blue Earth anyhow. Montana is a big state, it could be
just as far to drive to Libby for someone from Wyoming, Montana or
Idaho, as it would be for you to drive to Libby from Washington or
Oregon. Putting it in Washington would further the distance for some,
make it closer for others. I personally don't know why it was ever put
in Libby to begin with, but like Blue Earth, it just probably just sort
of happened. Has anyone contacted any city officials or Mayor of Libby
to talk about the show and it's future?

From some of the posts, it sounds like the community of Libby welcomed
us Fjordies with open arms, sponsoring lunches and other things, but we
as a group, for the most part, didn't recipricate the appreciation.
Sure they don't have a big indoor arena, nor probably the budget to
build one just for us. But the years I have been there the weather has
been good to very nice, having a couple rainy cold years can happen
anywhere. In and of itself, 1 or 2 rainy years is no reason to dictate
change all of a sudden. I have only been on this post for maybe 2
years, but it seems like this is fairly sudden and a bit of a hasty
decision to me.

I would like to hear from some of those pushing for change, why don't
you respond positively to having a spring show, and leave Libby alone?
I haven't heard anything but lets drop Libby, period, from some of
those who are lobbying for the change, without any alternative, 2 shows
would only help promote the breed farther, I learned of the breed while
visiting Libby, as I'm sure others have, and I purchased one because of
it, have had 12 Fjords, now have 10, all because of the Libby
experience. If there are people with the time, desire and energy to do
a Washington show, my blessing would be with them and I would hope for a
positive outcome, as it can only benefit the Fjord breed. You will also
have people in Washington that would get to that show that would never
go to Libby, and like myself, get the Fjord bug. If you want 2 shows
promoted by the NW group, bring in evaluators, judges, etc, then split
the funds if that's what is necessary. Or raise the yearly fee's for
membership or hold a fund raiser to fund it. There are many options for
a willing group.

I think some enjoyed Libby this year, even if the weather was a little
difficult.

Hi Ron Sherrie,
As you may know Connie I joined the PNFPG 2 years ago at the fall meeting in
Moses Lake but have not been able to attend any other meetings since. This last
show at Libby was the first one we've gone to so we have no history with the
group or with Libby.

Connie I are looking for information that will help us vote intelligently at
the upcoming meeting. Is there any information or history that you'd be willing
to share with us to help us understand some of the passion that we've witnessed
in the last month?

As I said in a previous post, if I had to vote right now I'd vote to move to
Moses Lake: my reasons are closer to home (3 hour drive as opposed to 9 hours)
facilities for my horses out of the weather, more room to grow the show, better
camping facilities for people.

I haven't heard any solid reasons why to keep the show in Libby other than
because it's always been there.

Believe me, I have an open mind and am trying to look at all the facts, I just
don't have any to support Libby. Can you help?

Also, as a long time member (you not us) what do you think about having a show
in Moses Lake, say 4th of July weekend (or middle of July) then also having
the show in Libby. It sounds like a lot of folks who breed have babies being
born are not to kean about a spring show, so what is your opinion?

Anyways...we're just looking for answers to what seems to be a pretty volotile
question.

Thanks for your time,
Your friends with Fjords,

In my opinion Libby is an absolutely great show.
Leave the Libby show where it is. The Nordic fest is not going to
follow us to Moses lake.
Great people have put years years of blood sweat and tears into making
the Libby show what it is today.

All great events have room to improve.
Personally I may not make it to the show every year (weekends are our
bread butter or hay oats) I am there in spirit and one day more in
flesh.
I am always happy to read about Libby and see the photos and dream of
going again.

We are outgrowing the Libby show grounds ability to contain all the
buggies in one areana or practice area. Moses Lake does have more room
I strongly encourage the Moses Lake Idea of a Spring show /or clinic
combination. There is defineatly enough interest to do both.
If more energy was put into promoting more events, then riping apart the
one great show we have. We'd be doing a better job of promoting fjords.
Our mandate is to promote the fjord horse.

Greetings to all PNFPG members from Warren and Sylvia Riddle, Teddy
Bear Fjords. The following motion will be presented for a vote at
the November 4 PNFPG meeting in Yakima WA:

That the September 2007 International Fjord Show, sponsored by
PNFPG, shall be held at the Grant County Fairgrounds in Moses Lake,
Washington.

As members, not officers of PNFPG, we, Warren and Sylvia Riddle,
will bring this proposed motion before the members for discussion
and vote. PNFPG meets only twice yearly to conduct business. At
these business meetings absentee votes are not permissible under
PNFPG By-laws. Warren

THAT sounds irregular? most bylaws make provision for a total
membership vote on any kind of significant departation from the state
of bylaw origin. Certainly the state level guideline for incorporating
would include this provision, because many states frown on conflicted
corporation takeovers, and might not this appear to be? (with only a
minimal vote)

In any case, provision or no, it only seems fair and upright in a
proposal of this magnitude, to include the entire membership in the
decision. Not doing so could lend the appearance of rank piracy, and
ruffle many feathers.

The rise and fall of successful shows have a delicate balance that can
be easily tipped, we just attended the annual Sandpoint ID Draft horse
show and were dismayed to find it only a quarter the size of a few
years ago! Not sure why, someone suggested increasing ingrown
management (no outreach). It seemed like many regular show horse
participants were there, but not near the exhibitors nor the
spectactors.

When it comes to making sudden MAJOR changes in a show, we should
perhaps proceed with discretionary caution and some careful planning.
I suggest research into other horse shows that have made bold moves,
and additionally garnering the majority support of the ENTIRE
membership.

a little aside, and Fjord related, I have been told that the Blue
Earth
and Libby shows are getting so big that the driving classes are
becoming
hazardous due to lack of facilities/space to allow for safe classes,
and
safe hitching and warm-up areas. Just a caution..the Fjord shows
could
be headed for a disastrous accident that could maim or kill some of US
(exhibitors and/or spectators)...all because the business grew a bit
too
fast and caution was not exercised in time.

I don't know about Blue Earth but I do know about Libby. We split the
classes in two this past year and that made them no larger than a
regular driving class would normally be. The Libby grounds have been
greatly improved over the past 18 months and the facilities are becoming
more outstanding as time goes on.

Hi Everyone,
I too am finally getting back to normal after the Libby show. We arrived in
Libby last Tuesday and did not leave until Monday, so needless to say I was
very tired and ready to come home. But I had a wonderful time and it was great
to see so many competitors in so many classes. Some classes were so large they
had to be divided in two ( Ladies Cart for instance). Sherrie Dayton, Shirley
Anderson and everyone on the PNFPG show committee..Thank you for another job
well done.

The big thrill for me was getting a blue ribbon in ground driving with my
yearling stallion, Andor. This was my first performance class ever ( I never
thought I could do it ). And to think that just 2 months ago neither Andor or
myself knew anything about driving. In fact, I think he taught me and I believe
knowing how to drive is somehow part of the Fjords' internal mechanism somehow!
He is something else.

I also really enjoyed seeing Flotren in the flesh and under saddle...whew !!
what a horse that is !! Good luck to him and his new owner in Montana. I also
was impressed with my good friend Beth Bettis and her son Justin and their
great little mare, Echo Valley Aud. This was Beth and Justin's first horse show
and they did it all : ground driving, novice cart, log skid, western pleasure,
pie eating contest, costume..( they really needed two horses, not just one !!
:) ) Is there anything they can't do ? Wow, it was just great !!

Gayle Ware did demonstration with her stallion, Dusty. I have never seen a
Fjord with such an extended, floating trot as this horse has. Thank you Gayle
for sharing that with us.

My good friend Jim McMillan, also in his first competition, got first in the
Farm Hitch class with his team of 4 year old mares, Leena and Nina in a wagon
he made himself. Good job Jim !!

I am glad to be home , but I am already planning for next year to enjoy it all
over again.

Well, we are finally home and somewhat recuperated from Libby. We had a
great time and all our hard work in teaching the girls (Tone' and Netta) to
drive
paid off and we got lots of compliments on how nice they and I are coming
along.
Also a few shocking ribbons that we didn't expect to get.
Tone' took third in the fast Keyhole race with the infamous Dusty stallion
taking second. Don't know the name of the horse taking first but I'm pretty
sure
he only stopped because of the judges standing around the outside of the
Keyhole circle. Boy did he put the breaks on. Good thing you didn't get run
over
Peg!

Saw lots of old friends and met some new ones. Stayed up swapping funny horse
stories one night with the Knutsens, Watanabi's (spelling) and the Cook's.
What a riot we all can be at the end of a tiring day

Saw a few prospective purchases, if only I had $$ LOL

Over all the rain wasn't bad, It had a habit of quitting before or during the
first class and did not rain during the show.

As far as the parades, You have to go downhill over a concrete bridge to get
into town and It was raining hard that morning. Also the staging area for the
horses needs to be addressed for safety issues. I think the PFNPG is going to
meet with the Nordicfest Parade committee this winter.

HUGE turnout of competitors at Libby, and as always it was a lot of fun.

I couldn't believe we got 4th in Gamblers Choice Team!!

This year was our 4th year at the Libby show and it was again a good show.
We just do the spectator thing and see what we can learn. A bunch of my skills
need to be a lot better before I jump in the ring, not to mention the
bottomless gas tank on our truck.
Does anyone have a direct e-mail address of any of the organizers as I
have a couple of comments to make to them that may be of interest.
We did make a profit on the raffle, going home with a neat horse shoe
hanger, donated by Brian and Ursula Jensen of Trinity Fjords. We talked to
Ursula for awhile on Sunday in the stands and thanked them then . We also won
a gift certificate to Becks Montana Cafe from Ron and Sherrie Dayton of
Sunwood Fjords,I thanked Ron on Sunday during one of the breaks in the show.
On Sunday we bought more raffle tickets and won the best looking rock in
Montana.Marilyn Heed of Mountain Top Studio in Idaho Falls,ID painted the head
and shoulders of a Fjord on a rock. This was donated by OE Pat Wilson of Hyde

I very much agree Carol, I would love to have a copy too if anyone made a
film. Gene and I have enjoyed the one from last year so much!

Sorry you couldn't make it this year. Our A2Z Thorson placed third in the
young stallion class (a Gjest grandson) and that was quite good considering
the competition (like Obelisk). One of the Snowy Mtn Grays was second;
(sorry I can't recall his name Lauren.). Thorson was ridden in the parade as
a header for our stagecoach and team; he's a beautiful animal.

One of our yearling fillies by A2Z Thorson was first place in yearling
halter out of a large class! I hasten to add that she is for sale, her dam
is a daughter of Rokida's Nicklaus (a gray that was Grand Champion at Blue
Earth a few years ago). This gal is rich in color with very dark markings.

See how I worked that infomercial in Carol? You've taught me a lot =)))
(seriously).

We also have a 2-year old stallion for sale that is a grandson of Gayle
Ware's Dustin and he is also a son of Rusten. This sweetheart will do
anything for you and is a gentleman through and through. Now I'm not
guaranteeing that he'll dance the fandango like Dustin does, but if he was
studiously ridden as long as Gayle has ridden Dusty, he just might =)))

We have lots of prime young stock for sale, including a gelded son of
Trinity's Samstein (2nd place last year) and a yearling filly by A2Z Thorson
(2nd place last year).

We live in northwest Montana, if anyone is interested in buying a quality
Fjord at a reasonable price, give us a call at 406-295-5050 or drop us a
line at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we'll fill in the particulars.

From the conversation on the List, I gather there wasn't a video made.
That's a shame, and I'd like to suggest that it would be a good place for
the NFHR to spend some money. A video of such a happening would be a
tremendous promotional tool. Just think about it . . . An edited video
of
the 2001 Libby Show plus Evaluation available at a price, of course, to
all
interested people, whether current Fjord owners or wannabees. I think
that
would have been a hot item. Well, there's always next year.

I have no idea what a professional video would cost --- $5,000 maybe.
Sell them for $35. Such a video would be a great service to the breed,

Was there any kind of amateur video made that might be available for sale?

Hello Everybody from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia -

I wanted so badly to go to Libby this year. It's always been my favorite
show, and it's gets better each year, so with the Evaluation happening at
the same time, I tried my darndest to get the time off, but alas, no such
luck.

I want to thank Beth, Catherine, and everybody else who reported so
thoroughly on the show. It must have been a grand show, and I'm in awe of
those who laboured to put it on. I can only imagine the work and
complications needed to coordinate a three-day show with a full-fledged
Evaluation. Congratulations to all of you.

2001-09-18 Thread Starfire Farm, LLC
This message is from: Starfire Farm, LLC [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks, Mike, for your additions and corrections. Glad to hear that you
felt that the Evaluation went so smoothly! I had some great concerns
about how it was going to end up prior to arriving (worry-wort that I
can be.) But once we got going, and I saw just how committed and hard
working the volunteers were, I quit worrying. Thanks to the score sheet
runners. Thanks to Patty Petersen, Alan and Lois Merrill and Denise
Hoopes. Sorry I missed you on the first post. Couldn't have done it
without you all.

As far as the Starfire team was concerned, we had a pit crew addition
with Susan Cargill jumping in, grooming and generally helping anywhere
she could to get horses ready for halter classes on Friday. Once those
were over we finally got to play! First on the agenda was hitching the
Four in Hand. The whole time we were so busy with the Evaluation stuff,
Jeff and Lisa Pedersen were driving their Four around the show grounds
while I, longingly, looked on! Finally, it was our turn. Our pit crew
harnessed and hitched. Dave McWethy came by and gave us some pointers
on harness and hitching. Thanks, Dave. Philllip Odden, Arne Presthus
and Dave McWethy jumped on the carriage as we drove first to the arena
(getting in the middle of Anne Appleby and Gayle Ware's freestyle
construction!) Then out to the horse paths in the woods. Ah
what fun! That's what it's all about, eh Dave, Jeff, Lisa and Brian?
There is nothing like the sound of that team clopping down the road in
unison.

Speaking on Anne and Gayle, I want to echo (again) what Catherine
Lasessen said about the quality of riding and driving we saw at Libby
this year. In addition to Anne and Gayle, Joni Morrison, who rode for
Anton Voorhoeve, was riding and schooling the Voorhoeve's young horses.
This young woman has ridden under world class Dressage instructors in
Germany, and it was obvious. Anne let her school Wez and it was
something watching her get some very lofty and through tempi changes
and passage. What a gas! I commented to Joni about the quality of the
work she was getting from Wez, and she said that he was very nice! A
tribute to Anne's skill in bringing him up through the levels of
Dressage. It was just awesome seeing the high quality of riding and
schooling there, all in Libby, Montana at a Fjord horse show. Hard to
imagine, but there we were.

So, with all of that going on and the Pedersen's, the Jensen's and our
Four-in-Hands, there was a lot to see at Libby this year. Saturday's
show opened with the three Four-in-Hands and a Pair bringing in the
flags for the opening ceremonies. Quite an impressive sight. We
continued on with a Four-in-Hand class, then on to the various riding,
driving and fun classes that make the Libby show so popular. I kept
hearing Jenny Callahan's name placing high in the ribbons.
Congratulations, Jenny, quite an improvement from last year. Due to
flagging energy on our parts, the Starfire team had to scratch quite a
few classes (can you believe it, we even scratched the Log Skid, oh yea,
and guys, the GIRLS won the Log Skid again..) I do want to
say, however that we were very proud of Sue North's and our little white
dun mare, MVF Sara. Sue (Sandy's mother) has been participating in the
Libby show for a few years with very limitied riding and driving
experience. She did an awesome job driving Sara in the Novice Driving
and Ladies driving classes, taking first place and third place,
respectively. Sue, who was thrilled last year when she finally placed
in a driving class year, was as proud as can be of her little mare.
Everyone wanted to take Sara home with them (sorry, you'll have to go
through Sue first!)

Congratulations to all who were there, whether you showed or not,
whether you placed or not. We had another wonderful time, with good
friends and awesome surroundings. Thanks, again, PNFPG, for another
great time in Libby. We have some nice photos from the show and I'll
try to get them up on our website during the next week.

I think we had one scratch in the conformation evaluation.

Somewhere around 45 performance tests were completed the following day
(actually, it was 54 if you count the utility sections of the tests
separately) which started Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m.. If my numbers
are incorrect, you'll have to forgive me. I participated in 12
Introductory tests with 6 horses, so my recollection of most of the day

I really don't know how you did that Beth. Then to go on for 2 more days
of the show with just about as an aggressive schedule too. What a woman!

Please, if my
numbers are incorrect, feel free to correct them (Mike?)

I think we actually had a few less than what you listed. We had a few
horses scratch some tests. But your numbers are fairly close.

The Medallions were awarded by Mike May the following morning. He must
have either stayed up late, or gotten up very early Friday morning to
tabulate the scores for this. Am I right, Mike?

Actually I had them all set ready to hand out after the last test was
scored but we just plain ran out of time. As a horse finished all of its
tests I calculated the medallion it was to receive so I wasn't left with
several hours work afterwards this time. I would have handed them out
right after the last test but most everyone was already on their way to
dinner by then.

Thanks, again, to everyone involved in the success of this Evaluation.
The Libby 2001 Evaluation Committee: Ursula Jensen, Peg Knutsen and I,
couldn't have accomplished this without the assistance of (almost)
countless people. I'll try to name them all, but if I miss anyone, let
me know, as I'd like to include my thanks to them in a Herald article.
Thanks to Mike May, Dennis Johnson, Woody Hoopes, Photographers Kim and
Kari of Mirror KB Ranch, the Parks and Rec. coordinator Carol Ann (can't
remember her last name)

Denise Hoopes was my most able bodied assistant too. Patty Peterson also
helped out some the first day. Keith Brighton Alan Merrill both were
helping me with the running of the score sheets too.

I would also like to thank all that helped. Especially the ones that were
forgotten above. I hope I didn't miss too many.

It was a very smooth running Evaluation this time. They seem to run better
every time we have one. I guess we are getting it figured out.

Hi listers,

It's been difficult for me to sit down and write in the aftermath of
9-11-01. We were on our second leg of our two day trip home from
Libby, had just loaded the horses and were preparing to be on our way
when I caught a glimpse of the WTC on our host's television. The first
tower was on fire, then the second plane struck. We listened to the
events unfold in horror and disbelief as our little caravan drove home.
Each new piece of news had us wondering what would come next, and just
how bad it might become. Our feelings of helplessness and
insignificance, I'm sure, were shared by many. We watched as one jet
landed in Billings, MT., then saw no more planes in the sky. It was
erie. As someone said on a news program last night, normal is not
going to be the same anymore.

Thank you to everyone who has shared their words of encouragement and
news, both good and bad. It has been especially helpful, and deeply
touching, for me to hear of the solidarity felt and displayed around the
world. I cannot read, watch or think about the outpouring of untiy and
love for fellow human beings without becoming emotional and teary eyed.
A deep, heartfelt, thanks for your thoughts, prayers and all you are
doing. Life, here, is slowly returning to normal. I, like others
have written, take comfort in mundane tasks and the warm, kind, eyes of
our horses.

I would like to echo Catherine Lassessen's well said thanks to everyone
who helped out with the Libby show, and with the driving accident in the
pleasure driving class. In addition to the gentlemen who dragged the
runaway horse to a stop, several people came into the arena to head the
remaining horses while we waited for an ambulance. Thanks to everyone
for your assistance and I was glad to know that the driver survived,
miraculously, with only bumps and bruises.

We participated in both the Evaluation and the PNFPG show.
Congratulations, again, to the Libby Show Committee for putting on
another wonderful show. Due to the hard work and dedication of
wonderful Committee members and volunteers, the Evaluation came off
without a hitch. A special thanks to Dennis Johnson and Woody Hoopes,
who were there for us to provide just about anything we needed.

32 horses participated in the Conformation portion of the Evaluation.
Three and Under Stallions (3); Three and Under Mares (2); Three and
Over Geldings (3); Three and Older Stallions (11); Three and Older
Mares (15.) Wayne Hipsley and Karen Cabic were the senior evaluators.
We were also given the added pleasure of having Arne Presthus, from
Norway, complete score sheets for our horses. Arne's scores were not
included in the final tablulation of the overall score given for each
horse, however it was nice to be able to receive a written document
giving us a Norwegian viewpoint of the quality of our horses. In
comparing our horses' scores between Wayne's, Karen's and Arne's score
sheets, the points are not so far off. When there were differences,
they were usually not more than one or a half point apart, which tells
me that the qualities that evaluators are looking for in a good horse
are similar, whether American or Norwegian. After each group of horses
had been evaluated, they were brought back into the arena giving
everyone (participants and audience) the opportunity to see the horses
(within their respective sex and age group) together for comparison.
Wayne, Karen and Arne provided commentary regarding each horse, making
it an educational experience for participants and audience. Ribbons and
score sheets were awarded at that time. Evaluator trainees also scoring
alongside the senior evaluators were; Catherine Lasessen, Curtis Pierce
and Phillip Odden.

Somewhere around 45 performance tests were completed the following day
(actually, it was 54 if you count the utility sections of the tests
separately) which started Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m.. If my numbers
are incorrect, you'll have to forgive me. I participated in 12
Introductory tests with 6 horses, so my recollection of most of the day
is a total blur. I'll take this opportunity to thank our awesome pit
crew (Gail and Jim Russel, Sandy North, Bob and Sue North, Kathie
Hibbard, Frank and Michelle Ping) who kept the horses coming in their
required tack. Special thanks to Jeff and Lisa Pedersen, who stepped in
to help out with harnessing, hitching and getting to me the 5 horses I
drove in the Intro Driving tests, with only one horse in between each
test. Their efforts, along with our pit crew made sure that the
evaluators were not kept waiting for tack changes. Please, if my
numbers are incorrect, feel free to correct them (Mike?)

The order of tests was as follows: Introductory Western (7 tests);
Advanced Western (3 tests); Introductory English (14 tests); Advanced
English (5 tests); Utility Section of Advanced English/Western Riding
(7 tests);  Introductory Driving (9 tests);

There are cell towers but service will come and go depending on where you

Traveling: Figure 21/2-3 hours from Spokane. Or an hour/11/2 from Sandpoint.
Just stay north on H95, go through Bonners Ferry, up the big hill and turn
right at the 3 mile gas station. (Which is actually only two miles from
town) Stay on that road and you'll end up in Libby. Its about 65 miles from

Hello B U: Yes, we'd be interested in the sweaters. Or, I would. I'll
have to check with Mark.

We drove Merit both Saturday and Sunday - still monkeying with the gear -
but he's still doing great. I mowed avenues through our pasture so we can
practice hills, turns and so on without going out on the road. Lovely
weather here - sunny, warm - a little breeze so no bugs. And no volcanic
action over on Mt. Baker. Lovely spot. Later, mark and teressa

The program/brochure for the NFHR Evaluation is in the making but if anyone
still wants to advertise by sending in $10 and a business card to Peg
Knutson or Mike May (whichever is quickest) please do so right away. To be
fair and equitable we are only allowing business card ads.

I'm sure there is also an opportunity to place an ad in the PNFPG show
booklet in which case contact Sherrie Dayton for info...The PNFPG is also
looking for raffle items . This would be a great opportunity for fjord
artists to donate a piece of their work and have it displayed at the show.
These raffle items are real important for the group as they support the all
important fund raising aspect of the group so please support the PNFPG.

We are gearing up for the big event by working our horses daily and in this
heat it's certainly been a challenge.

Shirley Anderson, I've lost your e-mail address...please contact me.

I am also looking for a room in Libbyso if anyone has a reservation and
will not be using it,please contact me right away. thanks.

I have just been contacted by a Norwegian Knitting company who made the
Norwegian sweaters that were so sought after in Norway this year. It has
fjords knitted into the pattern (not the actual animal but a picture) and
are very nice...I'm sure you will see them throughout the country at some of
the horse events as about 12 of us managed to weasel them from district
members in Norway this springThey asked me to see if there is a market
in N.A...IS there? Let me know. These are not cheap (circa $200) but are
a lifetime investment. UJ

I shared Sandy last year with the filming of the PNFPG show, and I sorely
missed her. I'll need every wonderful ounce of her this year, with the
evaluation and the 4-in-Hand class, so it'll have to be someone else who does
the filming. Sorry for being greedy, but it's my turn this year! ;-)

Gearing up for Libby should include bee sting kits.
The doctor yesterday told us everyone should carry Benadryl at all times
when they are outdoors during bee season. Add some to you first aid kits
for
trail rides. It saved Jennie's life and could save yours.

SORRY to hear of Jennie's close call Teresa! That's very good advice.

I recall there have been a lot of bees in the food area in past years at
Libby. Hopefully, they may have replaced the open garbage containers with
closed ones..??

Gearing up for Libby should include bee sting kits. The bee's in our area,
(the term bee's = yellow jackets, bald faced hornets, wasps etc) were out
early this year and some areas are already having problems with the shear
volume of the bees.

There could bee another invasion at Libby. Remember two years ago?? EVEN
IF YOU DON'T THINK YOU ARE ALLERGIC YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED.

We learned this lesson last week when Jennie was stung and had a severe
reaction. IF you develop hives from a bee sting you need to take Benadryl
even IF you don't think you are allergic, if swelling or hives start get to
a doctor/hospital immediately. Jen had to have epinepherene/adrenalin and
lived on Benadryl for three more days before she was out of the woods.
Apparently, if you have hives from any allergic reaction your breathing is
at risk.

The doctor yesterday told us everyone should carry Benadryl at all times
when they are outdoors during bee season. Add some to you first aid kits for
trail rides. It saved Jennie's life and could save yours.

Sorry for the doom and gloom but.

Dear Ursula
I haven't had the opportunity to meet you and your husband yet but my
husband and I raise Fjords near Calgary. I was wondering if you could help
us in regards to the Libby show. We have been trying for years to make it
down to watch but something always comes up. We are determine to go this
year but we are having trouble finding out if there is any camp site still
available. We don't need anything special as we just have a truck and
camper. Could you let us know who tocontact or would anyone around that area
let us park in their field. Any help would be greatly appreciated and hope
to see you at the show.
Thanks ,
Marg

   Dear Group from Brian Jensen;
The Libby Show 2001 will have a great starter with the
fours entering the arena at 1 P.M. on Sat. The midwest group has been
running the four-up class for many years and Libby can finally follow suit.
As the pictures have shown recently there looks to be at least three fours
competing this year. Many thanks to Dennis Johnson and the show committee
for including the class. Beth and Sandy of Starfire will be there as well
as
Jeff and Lisa Peterson.Trinity Fjords four will be there as well.I was
hoping for Pat Malloy to start a four , but some bad luck with a helpers
injury and a huge drought in their area has caused them to cancel their
trip this year . We will certainly miss them.
Our Driving Weekends have been completed successfully for
the third year with about 20 successful entrants overall. If you are
interested in 2002 talk to us at Libby about a weekend next year.We already
have bookings and some spaces taken so let us know if you are interested.
Hopefully there are now more enthused and safety aware drivers out there to
use their Fjords in the wonderful sport of Driving.
I may be looking for a groom for the four and unique
hitch so if you are interested in the sport of driving and want to
participate in the show let me know. I have one groom confirmed and another
cancelled due to personal reasons. Most men do not want to dress in livery
for the class so usually it is the ladies who give me a hand.
See you at Libby for lots of Fjord fun and visiting

While we are talking four-in-hand I will throw in a for sale item. Los Trigos
Ranch has a four-in-hand Freeman harness for sale. It is Fjord size up to
about 15.1 hands. The harness has been very lightly used and has nickel
hardware. They are asking $7000. Or the harness can be split into two pairs
with the wheeler pair (new) selling for $4000 and the leader pair (used about
2 dozen times) selling for $3000. All combinations come with the appropriate
lines.
Anyone who is interested please email me privately and I will put you in

I luckily got to view the Libby tape. It was good. We have not yet
attended a Libby show, and it sure helped to see what goes on there.
The parade looks like a blast.. I very much enjoyed to see the four up
Brian drove and it was great. He truly looks like he enjoys the
driving. I will view it over and over. It would be nice to have a tape
with all the different ways Brian has hitched up. What way will be
next, Brian?

I 'll hope to get to Libby one of these days. Seeing them in person
along with the four up class, which will no doubt have a large
entry, will be a treat. Thanks go out to all that helped to make that
tape. Tillie
