This message is from: Kay Van Natta I think Mary is right about the outcross on the Norwegian Duleheste (dale horse). They certainly would've been the handiest choice geographically. They're used on the larger, lowland farms in Norway but are too big and need too many calories to be practical on the tiny mountain farms. I sure haven't seen all of them but I don't think that have too many (or any) color rules. A traditional color (and my favorite) seemed to be black/very dark brown with amber trim...legs, face, flanks, tummy. I'm sure some of them are chromed but I don't think it's a major feature. There aren't a lot of them to look at in North America but I saw some and even got to ride one in Norway. They seemed like sturdy, sensible guys without, maybe, the pretty faces we get to look at in Fjordish circles. Well, that's it from the shallow end of the information pool. Re: Where is everybody? Libby, of course!
This message is from: "Barbara Lynch" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Where is everybody? Some of us were at the Libby evaluation and 22nd Annual International Fjord Horse Show! We had a great time at both. Wayne Hipsley and Karen Maas were the evaluators. Wayne and Karen are great to work with and we all so enjoyed the education that they gave us during the evaluation. The highlight of the eval for me was when a 16 year old mare was awarded a Blue ribbon. She was a super mare. I'll let her owners fill everyone in if they care to. Then the show! We had the best weather I have ever seen! It was cold at night but really warm during the day. I even have a sunburn. It started out on Friday morning with a clinic by Wayne. What great knowledge he has of horse anatomy, form and function. He talked on horses in general and Fjords in particular. He talked on the types of Fjords and the range that we need to keep in them. For the show we had a good turnout with around 35+ horses. Fred and I took the gelding that we have been using the last few years and a 4 year old mare that we just started riding and driving this year. I entered the mare in mostly fun classes where she didn't have to deal with anything but me. I was so pleased with her and how calm she was. At the Moses Lake show she was pretty nervous and didn't want to stand still either riding or driving. At Libby I guess she decided that it was now normal to stand around watching "stuff" happen. Everyone said they had a great time. We even had one man that rode the train from North Dakota to watch the show say that he is going to try to bring a horse out next year. We got to know some of our neighbors from Canada better than we had before and will look forward to seeing them again next year also. Well, time to go feed the critters! Re: Where is everybody?
This message is from: Sarah Clarke <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I've been busy taking horses to shows. Here is the text of a message i just posted on fjord issues - which has pictures. Sometimes it’s not about the scores or the ribbons. On the face of it I could report last Sunday’s dressage schooling show as a “failure.” I took 3 students and 2 of them were disqualified on one ride for leaving the ring before the test was over. Nobody won their class. But here is where the successes came: Student “A” is my adopted daughter. She has learning disabilities and ADHD. She has been running around on a little Welsh cross “handed down” from the older brothers who never allowed her to refer to it as “her pony.” Three weeks before the show I finally convinced her that she was just way to big for the little pony. She choose Nika, a 7 year old Fjord mare that I have been training for about a year as her next mount. We spent 2 weeks on the longe line getting her position firmed up, then I let her do some riding with the side reins on. I had entered Nika in USDF “intro A” class, and 3 days before the show she asked to ride in the show. So we drilled the test for 3 days and then off to the show. She handled it beautifully, getting all 5’s and 6’s. Well, except for the part where both horse and rider lost focus and wandered out the gap in the fence at A during their walk. But A turned back around and completed the test. I was proud of her composure and the grace with which she accepted the news that she was disqualified. Since I had Nika entered in 2 classes and I didn’t think my daughter had the nerves or stamina to ride 2 tests, I called up a second student who hadn’t ridden in 2 months because of depression and told her that I thought she could handle riding Intro B on Nika. To my amazement (since I have been doing anything I could think of to get her riding again) she agreed – even after I told her that she would be picked up at 5:45 am. She got on Nika, had 20 minutes to get in synch with her and rode a very nice test for a 57%. I think my confidence that she could do it meant more to her than all the compliments I could have given her on her riding improvement. The final student to ride was the reason that we originally decided to go to the show. She wanted to try training level, haven ridden the introductory tests at the first show we did in May. She was riding the nice 8 year old mare Valka that I have leased this year from Village Farm. This was Valka’s second show, the first time at training level. This student has been riding with me for 6 months. Her improvement in her riding skills is tremendous – plus she reports to me that she has lost 30 pounds and her resting heart rate has gone form 100 to 70. she scored a 59% in her first test. In her second test Valka – much to everybody’s’ surprise, just hopped over the rail as she took the canter lead. So her rider just hopped her right back in and went on with her test. Several spectators suggested that we had a 3-day event candidate. Again, even thought it was a disqualification, I was happy with her composure and quick thinking. The student was disappointed – she was hoping for a 60% - Yet 6 months ago she couldn’t trot 2 consecutive 20 meter circles. We all told her she was too hard on herself! So was the show a success or failure? Three students found out they were capable of more than they had thought. For one just getting out of bed in the morning would have been a success! I was proud of them for what they did accomplish and also happy with the Fjord mares for being so nice to take to the show. They just hopped into the trailer at home, hopped out of the trailer at the show. They warmed up looking happy and calm among all the snorty thoroughbred event horses! They didn’t even get herd bound and call to each other! While I was coaching Valka’s warm-up I looked up to where Nika was tied to the trailer and she was surrounded by a group of admiring little girls all petting her. > I've gotten very few Emails from the list too, in the > last few days... > Everyone must be out enjoying the horses. > > Amy Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f

Where is My Message to the List?
This message is from: Steve McIlree <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> If you have written a message to the List and it's never shown up here there are several possible reasons. The number one most likely thing that will keep a message off the List is that you have sent it from an email address other than the one which you used when you subscribed. If you are RECEIVING the List, you must still have access to that address, but for some reason you are SENDING from a different one. If you think this may be your problem, look at the detailed headers of a message you receive from the List; there should be a line there which says "Received: from mystery.com", then some cyber-junk, then "for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>" where that is the email address you used when you subscribed. Get someone to help you set up your email program so at least your messages to the List come from that address. Or unsubscribe that address and re-subscribe using your new one. The second most common reason that a message will be rejected by the List is when a Digest subscriber replies to a message and leaves the entire Digest attached as a quotation. This is simple to solve, just be sure you delete all but a sentence or two quotation which establishes context for your reply. It's also possible you used the work *virus* or some obscenity in your message. The server watches content and rejects messages for these words. There are a couple other highly unlikely reasons the List server might have rejected your message; and then there is the possibility that it's still wandering around in some obscure corner of the Internet and will arrive someday. -- Steve McIlree - Pferd, Skipper & Clust - Omaha, NE/Las Cruces, NM, USA If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then give him only two of them. --Phil Pastoret

This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Sue, I just got a new Pacific cart last fall (too late to even use it) It is stored in the hay barn..I put support under the shafts (a plastic "sawhorse" with a 2x6 across it) under the short part of the shafts, the rest of the shafts are lying across the seat. I don't know if that is the right way to store it though, so I will be eager to hear from others. I didn't get the cover with it, but bought some "naugahide" type material with a flannel backing to cover it, which is just laid over it now..will make a decent cover for it. Bill Schuil at Pacific told me that My cart was the first one in Alaska. I guess I will have to get busy this summer and get my old mare driving again! Stella is 27 but still acts young and spry. The younger fjords are not trained to drive but I want to get them going also. If only spring will come! Hey, it warmed up to +25 yesterday after -17 the night before. Supposed to hit +50 next week! This message is from: "Dagrun Aarsten" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello, I'm back again... (my email is working again, by the way, if you want to throw in a last-minute ad for Skandifest) Just sharing my mild frustration. I ordered the Thorowgood griffin AP broad (XW, 17" seat) and after promising and promising delivery in 2-3 weeks (for 3 months) and making up excuses, the contact at Miller's (Thorowgood Distrib. in the US) had to admit that they will be filing for chapter 11 bankrupcy shortly. I ordered through my tack store...so after expecting it any day, just in time for Skandifest, they had to tell me I will simply not get it. Brigid, can you add in the rules in the Skandifest program that "native Norwegians on Canadian-imported fjords may ride bareback"? If anyone knows of any store having some of these in stock (US, Canada or any other country likely to ship to me) let me know and I'll be on the like a hawk. Can you believe they keep advertising these saddles aggressively in US riding magazines and they're impossible to get? Hrmph. Dagrun, San Jose, CA

Re: Where is the snow?!
This message is from: "Karen McCarthy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ...snow? There's some here now in N. Nevada. About 4" down here in the valley. We got blasted yesterday afternoon - a great day to stay inside and bake a Jewish Apple Cake ( a great recipe Becky Vorpagel gave me.) Before the snow started, we thought it best to trailer 3 miles over to the other ranch & check on the cows. It was really blowing & super cold; read: tights under Wrangler's under chinks cold. I didn't want to put a nasty freezing-cold bit in Alycias mouth, so I rode her in her bosal. She was a star, and as frisky & forward as she got, never once took advantage of a perfect situation to be naughty! Together Dave & his Qtr/Arab mare, and Alycia and I cruised all the cows & 3 bulls, managed to check most of the fence and just make it in before the snow started spitting. At one point we were riding right into a hard wind from the south, so strong I almost couldn't breathe, but it felt wonderful, our ponies pushing on in an extended trot, finishing the circle on back to the trailer. They knew where we were headed! Before we left Dave obliged my wierd landscaping whims and did most of the work of hefting into the horse trailer,(while I managed the huge one-piece door in the wind), some gorgeously weathered hand hewn limestone corner blocks that were strewn about where an old ranch building once stood. wood chewing?... Just a tip I learned from a native Nevadan about keeping horses penned in dry lots: to keep 'em from chewing on your fences, toss in some old un-painted & un-treated wood scraps (minus nails, etc.), or non-toxic branches. Her small herd of 5 horses really has a field day with them, dragging them hither and yon, and getting a good chew in as well - all with no ill effects, and yes, wood fence still intact. This message is from: "Dave McWethy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> A week ago last Thursday, I joined Joanna Crell with my mares Signe and Mari ("The Camptown Ladies") to participate in the parade in Washington DC which marked the end of Michael Muir's trip across the US, driving his horses from California to Virginia. Michael has had MS most of his life, and drove from a wheelchair. He is president of Driving for the Disabled. You can see details of the trip on the website www.horsejourney.com . Joanna played the key roll in getting the parade permit - not an easy thing to do, she discovered. We hitched in front of the Relecting Pool (where, it kept going through my mind, Wilbur Mills ended his career), with the Capitol in the background. The "Ladies" were well behaved but not impressed ("It's not Oslo!"). We then paraded up and down Independence Ave. All went well. The crowd was pleased. Fjords were admired. It was a good day! This weekend I went for a day to Equine Affaire. It is a different perspective after a couple of years participating. It made me appreciate all the great organizing and effort the Giagiaris put into the event for three (?) years, and all the benefit they brought to the breed. We were definitely missed this year, and I hope we get back. Dave

Being a friend who boards my two Fjords at Old Hickory Farm, I have felt the void on the farm as Julie recovers. Luckily, I get to visit with Julie regularly and do feel she is progressing and will continue to gain ground! I am so glad Curt Pierce sent out a notice from Darryl in regards to Julie. Prayers are a powerful thing and if everyone on the list puts their prayers together There's no question Julie will be up and about soon! 2. My daughter, Maggie, has hit the teenage years and has left me alone in the horse world! I'm a recovering Mom who misses her daughter. Now, I'm faced with the challenge of working with two horses and working full time! I'm also learning to ride effectively on Maggie's gelding, Patrick. He's so much more horse than my dear seventeen year old, Annie. I'm figuring this will make me a better horse lady. I took a few lessons from our instructor I will do some more this winter. So, that's my situation, but I'm thankful for so much! What a beautiful Fall we've had! Pat McCurdy Cato, NY Proud Owner of Annie and Patrick :-)

Re: where is everyone?
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Jean, no, his brakes are well mounted *lol* But at the time being I had to ride alone (it is nearly dark, when I'm able to go for a ride), and A'simi missed other horses, some days more than others. And so, when I'm not in the saddle but leading him, he is a little bit stubborn, and so, I can tell a new story from yesterday. I'm glad, you cannot see my face when writing this story ... it is as red as my little italian car :-) When I was coming out of the forrest two of the soldiers were looking to my horse. And one of them said to the other: "this is a mule!" Oh dear, I felt just if I had to fall down ... A mule - my world best pony! So I had to tell them that he is pretty little ears, nothing without his sometime stubborness, which can remember to a mule. The poor soldiers had to listen to my lecture about the Fjord, about ponies etc. ... And when I was coming home, I told my husband what happened. Unfortunately for $ reasons business has been slow, but it's great to have time for one's favorite activities! One major accomplishment was teaching Tommes to neck rein. My goal is to enter more shows, many of which will be "open" against all breeds and under West Coast rules, which state that any horse over 5 years must be in the curb and ridden with one hand. I've been afraid to try this, but one day I said to myself, this is silly! I can do this as well as anyone else. I've been riding Tommes in a Kimberwicke which is similar to his driving bit, and he goes well in it. After some shopping around, I found a Western curb to fit that big mouth. Off I went with my clicker, my new bit, and knowledge from a riding lesson on proper use of leg aids. After 20 minutes, Tommes would do a lovely turn on the forehand and walking turns in both directions. OK, take a deep breath, put those reins in one hand, and go! I practically had to sit on my right hand to keep it from interfering : ) It didn't take long before he learned to do this as well. Next day, same exercise. It took a few clicks & rewards to remind Tommes of the lesson, then he was more than eager to do a repeat performance. The turns on the forehand were SPINS on the forehand. The walking turns were practically pirouettes. OK, now we work on variations of turns : ) as in, just turn left then go straight, turn left then right, big circle/little circle. We ended the lesson with the beginning of sidepass. Yay! So that's what I've been doing instead of writing to the list. As soon as it quits raining, Jack is going to tape me practicing these things front front, side, and back so we can critique. She does not do that with Charley except that they have a stand off with glares and ears back. She is Holsteiner and twelve. What is the oldest a maiden mare can be bred? This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good Morning all, I too noticed a very small amount of mail on the list. Even thought we had been taken off for some reason. Glad all are still here. We took our "siri" to a trainer at the end of August and she was there for several weeks. We had good results and now my wife Ann rides her quite often and feels very comfortable. Normally, she rides one day and I ride the next. With frost in the air, we try to wait till it gets to 60°. We live in the open country and so have many different directions to ride, from along the irrigation canals to around harvested fields. We lock up the animals at night and the miniature donkey, the alpaca, and the pigmy goats all get along with Siri. It is fun to see how they bond. Dave Sperl Othello, WA
New Mexico Update RE: where is everyone?
This message is from: Cynthia Madden <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Well, I am still on the list and loving it here in Las Cruces. I walked through the leaves in my yard on Sunday (wearing sandles instead of boots or shoes) and thought what a great change this is from Nebraska in late October where wind chill temperatures are already a factor. Tank and I went for a drive on Saturday on the BLM land at the foot of the Organ Mountains. Tank is a real favorite with the horse people in the neighborhood and we have to stop and visit everyone on our way to the entrance to our desert drive. It's extremely pleasant. This next Saturday we are starting weekly dressage lessons. It is so nice to be able to plan things with the horses for the winter. The guys are not accepting the change to daylight savings time very well(neither am I!). When I get home from work it is almost dark and that's when I turn them out. Keyah just goes to stand in front of the feed room telling me it is time for his dinner. Tank, of course, takes advantage of his time out to graze the back yard. I have to clean their corrals under the lights. But it is nice to walk back to the house with the dogs and look at the stars. I have adopted a giant schnauzer, Zack. He is an very engaging character and my mini schnauzer, Arthur, keeps busy trying to keep him in line. Steve will be here in a few weeks and we will be busy making our annual supply of wild plum jam for Christmas. Steve picked the plums and froze the juice to bring down here. I am looking forward to my first Thanksgiving here in Las Cruces. All in all, life is good here in New Mexico! = Cynthia Madden Las Cruces, NM [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Carol Your pigs remind me of our chickens. My husband built our horses nice standing stalls where we feed them. However, the chickens think he build the mangers for them to lay their eggs. It is not unusual for me to go turn the horses out and find a bunch of hay in their manger with an egg in the middle. The horses have been well trained by the chickens to leave their nests alone. It amazes me how different species of animals find a way to get along with each other. Mary Harvey

On the way back he cried for his new friend which we met in the forrest. The soldiers had something to laugh. On Sunday they had there photos with them to picture my horse ... So, if you know one of this soldiers and this one show you a picture from a German Fjord which amused the soldiers ... that is my Fjord (and the one with the very red face trying to hide herself behind the horse - that's me) ... And what has this funny horse doing yesterday? I cleaned him, needed just 1 hour to see a Fjord under the mud. And just when I have cleaned his face, he got his head out of the halter and galopped away - through the deepest mud, throwing it also on myself. And with this outfit we had to go to the forrest. And everyone was laughing ... Anke with this humorous Fjord

The bad news about the trailer is it's at the welder getting a new gate for inside and a window is to be ordered for Heidi to look out. But it does tow real nice and I have not destroyed anything while going on down the road. Now I can't wait to load up and make my and Heidi's debut at our first driving club outing. Re: Give Credit Where Credit is Due - BDF JOHN ARTHUR & BDF MAGNUM at Libby -
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Arthur Rivoire) Hello Everybody from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia - First of all . . . . Thanks Ursula for the interesting posting on Libby. Congratulations to you and Brian for some great driving. Wish I'd been there this year. You mentioned the driving competition getting fierce at Libby. Well I guess. . . with an FEI driver like Orville Unrau. Were there any levels other than Novice and Open at Libby? Somehow it doesn't seem fair for Training or Preliminary Level drivers competing against World-Class drivers. Orville Unrau has competed in a World Championship, hasn't he? What do you think? On the other hand, it must have been fun to have him back at Libby, and to have the opportunity to compete against him. ~~~ Ursula, you reported . . . ~~ >Beymer pulled off an amazing 31 sec single log skid and placed first... ~~ "Uh-hum", Ursula, but that was - Beth "AND" BDF MAGNUM (Gjest x Holly-Solar daughter) who did the log skid in the amazing 31 seconds. Beth also won the Log Skid in '99 with Magnum's brother, BDF JOHN ARTHUR (Gjest x Holly). And in 1999, BDF MAGNUM placed second to his brother in that class. ~~~ Ursula went on to say - >Beth Beymer and Sandy North of Starfire Farm now own two horses with the >Versitility award...Congratulations and 'good -on-ya-girl' such a lot of >hard work ~ Beth won the 2000 Versatility Award with BDF MAGNUM (Gjest x Holly, having won it last year with BDF JOHN ARTHUR (Gjest x Holly), who by the way is named after our grandson. ~~~~ GIVING CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE - Since we (riders/drivers) don't win horse show awards all by ourselves, I think it's only fair to name the horses who pull the log, the carriage, or carry the rider. And in the interest of educating ourselves about our breed, and what makes a good Fjordhorse, I think we also need to name the parents of the horses AND the breeder, if that's not asking too much. How else can we possibly learn what the various bloodlines pass on? I certainly don't wish to diminish any of the credit and "glory" that deservedly goes to good trainers like Beth Beymer and the Jensons. It's pretty obvious that the horses can't do it alone. However, when it comes down to it, YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE A GOOD HORSE!!! And, we should give them the credit at every opportunity. I'll tell you, after finishing an extraordinarily busy Nova Scotia Beginner Driving Vacation season, all of us at BDF were SO GRATEFUL, and so much in awe of our wonderful horses who worked so well for us the entire season. The debt we, at Beaver Dam Farm, owe these horses was so evident, particularly this year when we were full-up most every week. All of us (the people) got out of sorts from time to time, but the horses, absolutely never. They just did their jobs!!! It was a wonderful summer . . . But, it was busy and there were stresses. Our program is called a BEGINNER DRIVING VACATION, and that's what it is. Our guests are beginners. Not necessarily beginner horse people, but all are beginner drivers, or the next thing to it. --- Can you imagine what these incredibly patient horses have to put up with during the ten weeks of our season, each week with new, inexperienced hands on the lines? -- I'll tell you, at the end of the season, everyone in the barn felt like getting down on their knees in front of Gjest, Holly, Toril, Maryke & Tessa (our driving horses), as well as all the other horses used everyday for riding lessons and trails. Each horse had done his/her jobs unstintingly through the long summer. They'd never, not once, let us down in any way whatsoever. None of them went lame. None were sick. None were disobedient. -- They just did their job every single day. --- So at the end of the summer, we felt we should kiss their feet, throw them a party . . . Do something to show our gratitude. But, all we could think to do was turn them out on grass for two weeks, which of course they loved. --- The down side of our gesture of gratitude was that at the end of their two weeks at grass, they've, all four of them, completely lost their svelte figures gained through months of work. You wouldn't believe the grass bellies. GIVING CREDIT TO THE HORSES - This has been a pet peeve of mine for years. When I go to horse shows, I like to hear the name of the horse, and hopefully, a little about that horse.

Re: Grey Fjords/Where is Lena?
This message is from: GAIL RUSSELL <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Mike, Thanks for your advice on the grey. Odin's muzzle is grey - so maybe he is a grey. As to his conformation, I didn't mention it, but we are looking at his conformation. I would be tarred and feathered (gently, of course) by various persons on this list if I didn't consider that. :) So far, I can find nothing out of place. Very nice hindquarters, *beautiful hard pony feet - he looks like he may never need shoes*, very balanced body, straight legs, nice balanced movement - though more an exquisite flat hunter type like his mom's (she is beautiful when she trots) than the flashy dressage type (see Susan Harris' book on gaits for comparision of these types), friendly and spookproof to the max (he whinnies (sp)and comes running whenever anyone approaches the pasture), very friendly, good neck and shoulder. He is going to be a tall, big and solid Fjord, but also move light on his feet. EVERY time the vet or farrier come around I tell them - "Tell me ANYTHING you see that doesn't look right - in the slightest." Believe me, my farrier would tell me immediately - he is a friend and would definitely prefer it if I did not have a stallion around. He is not thrilled that I bought Romulus - and definitely would discourage me from maintaining an inferior stallion. I keep asking Amy (the horsetrainer) about anything wrong - whenever I talk about gelding him early she pleads with me to wait a bit longer. I ask the vet to walk around him and check him out too - actively invite him to point out any conformation flaws. The vet is a popular one, breeds horses and mules himself, does a lot of AI work with the local warmblood breeders and with a nationally known dressage trainer. I think he would be straight with me. The only thing I can find to criticize is I would like his head to be a perfect Fjord head - it looks to me like that is not going to happen - though the overall look may change when his forelock grows out. He won't have a bad looking head (not the overlong "horsie" look), but I don't think it will be that exquisite look some Fjords have that makes grown men weep - and kiss pony muzzles when no one is looking. The only reason I would geld him if he were not grey is that I believe that there are plenty of Anvil's Regin (Regin is his grandsire) offspring out there - particularly in the Pacific Northwest - and lots with the nice qualities that come with those bloodlines. In grey - I don't think that is necessarily so - that is why I asked about other gray offspring from Rudaren/Regin. I think he might well be a good addition to the pool of grey genes - particularly for creating a 14.2+ pony hunter/low level dressage type horse that would be suitable for adults or children. Oh - and Jean reminded me to mention that Odin's sire is Leidjo - which is almost certainly where at least some of his grey genes came from. Anita and Orville regularly got grey babies from Leidjo x Lena(Odin's granddam) - in fact I believe Luisa (Odin's dam) was a one-time test mating with Regin to see if he would transfer his good qualities well. Then Lena went back to Leidjo as she reliably produced greys from him. The fact that Odin carries Leidjo blood is another reason to geld him if he is a brown dun - in that, between Regin and Leidjo, he will be related to a lot of the brown duns in the Pacific Northwest. Probably no real need for more of those bloodlines - unless Odin could add something in particular to the grey gene pool. Speaking of Lena - does anyone on the list have her, or know about the grey filly she had after Luisa - or whether she is still producing babies or what? My next project is asking about breeding for "perfect pony feet" - unless someone does it for me? Thanks all :) Gail > >How about looking at his conformation too? Don't just look at his >color. A bad grey stallion is no more desirable that a bad brown or any >other color. Color is of course a consideration but don't let it be the >only thing your looking at. > >Mike > > > > Gail Russell Forestville CA [EMAIL PROTECTED] Clicker List Web Site : http://clickryder.cjb.net
Re: WHERE ARE YOU????????
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] When list members advertise, a horse for sale or an upcoming clinic, etc., could you please put where you are. I am constantly pulling out my NFHR membership roster to find out where people are. This of course doesn't always work because every one on The List is not a NFHR member. Thanks. Sue Clark-Sorger Sandia Park, NM (Where we are having wonderful driving/riding weather).
Re: Where are the geldings?
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Last week a friend of mine in Washington state told me she went to an all breed auction. A six year old Fjord gelding sold for $1000. She said he was well trained, no flaws to her eye. I told her next time she sees something like this at an auction, not to tell me the next day, but call me ASAP Pamela
Where are the geldings?
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Brian J. - interesting that you have so many folks looking for geldings. When I began looking for a Fjord I sent a "want ad" to 40 breeders. While I did find geldings forsale they were on the west coast and east coast. I am in the midwest!! I came close to purchasing one from a video when I decided to first exhaust all possibilities in the midwest. I called most everyone in Minnesota within a 3 hours radius of Mpls./St. Paul. I found lots of babies forsale, young stock forsale and a few young geldings, but NO older, trained geldings - and I was willing to pay!!! :) Finally, I decided to just go see one of the younger geldings. The fellow had mentioned earlier that he had an older gelding, not the most beautiful, but had done everything - however, he was not forsale. When I got to the farm there were two horses in the barn - he said they decided they would be willing to sell the older one as well. Within l0 minutes I knew he was the horse for me - and I thought he was BEAUTIFUL - drafty with the sweetest temperment and big brown eyes. Yes, he has a long head and tends to be a bit chunky - but he is wonderful. I was so thankful the family was willing to sell him to me - they had owned him for 9 years. He has been a great teaching horse for me (driving) and while I know the family misses him they are happy to see him getting LOTS of attention. The point of my story is to those looking for geldings - call everyone Go see as many as you can and if someone has one of the older, done everything, been everywhere geldings ASK if they would be willing to sell it. Be willing to pay a decent price - those years of experience are worth alot. To those of you who might have an older gelding that has some worthwhile experience - if the good ole' boy is just hanging around while you fuss and work with younger horses - have just to darn many horses or don't have time to go and do stuff with him - consider selling him to someone who does. The lady I bought my Fjord from still refers to him as her "best friend" but she is happy we are enjoying him, love him and are giving him a wonderful home. Best of luck to those looking for that wonderful Fjord in their future. Linda in Minnesota where it is HOT, HOT, HOT and muggy - the horses just love it when I hose them down at the end of the day - then they go stand in front of their fans on their stalls :)

Re: Where the heck are you going?
This message is from: GAIL RUSSELL <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > Hi Gail ! Long time, hows Whdnie ? Whodini is great - now that we figured out that he really needs hind shoes. He kept going slightly off in his left hind - just short strided a little. Turns out his front/rear hoof angles have to be right. His conformation behind doesn't allow for any errors. We had been trying to leave him barefoot around here as we were just working him in sandy loam AND he picks so many fights that we wanted to prevent him from really doing damage by kicking out. But he seems to cause some kind of soft tissue damage (tendon pulls, who knows what?) if allowed to play without shoes. Farrier said he was wearing his heels down - creating the long toe/low heel situation behind. When we put hind shoes on him he was magically cured. We were jumping him - until he came up lame in front after plowing through a low jump and bumping his front cannon bone(didn't figure it was high enough to try jumping). The idea is that Amy rides and shows him - cleans up in the shows and thereby enhances her reputation as a trainer (but she isn't giving up her day job running a tack store). Amy really is not willing to push horses as hard as it takes to actually run a training barn - so her "training career" has to be a little off beat. Anyway - she was supposed to show him at a little schooling show here - but instead, she rode Gunthar (cause Whodini was lame). This was at the dressage barn where Gunthar ran off with the trainer several times - he basically got kicked out. Gunthar did very well, and took third in a jumping class (very low rails) over all the $10,000 horses. Partly his Myler bit (it really helps!! in getting him on the bit and bending) - partly Amy's riding, and partly the fact that he hadn't been worked in months and wasn't arena sour. We had a kind of sweet revenge - though the dressage trainer really was a good sport about it. Right now Whodini is learning to be a trail horse - and spending his days picking fights in the pasture. He has a prehensile upper lip that can be *really irritating* to a dignified QH! He plays chicken by "lipping" Jim's horse until Jim's horse just has to take a chunk out of his hide. He must have 20 dings on him at all times. I am sure the horses regard him as the worst kind of "little Brother" anyone could ever have. Are you going with Del >Tanner on his Wagon Drive ?wish we could go this year. You did this? With horses - or just as a passenger? Jim is out of vacation - but I might go. - Although it sounds like you might be able to cram it into a weekend. Tell me about it if you have time - and juicy personal experience. When we travel >from Ca. to Libby, Mt. I plan to go to Libby this year. we have to get Health Cert. within a few days of >travel, or risk expiring while on the road. Wow - I didn't realize they were so short-lived. Nevada does require a Neg. >Coggins and a Health Cert. We haven't gotten organized to get a Coggins - so we probably will not go. I actually would prefer not going so far anyway right now. In the fall we're taking our horses up to Modoc to stay on a cattle/hay ranch. Great place for family stuff. You have the whole house to yourself in the middle of 1000 acres of hay. (By fall it will be cut and we can ride in the huge fields). Plus you can take horses into the Warner Wilderness. Gotta figure out how to get a cell phone that works anywhere though - I don't particularly want to be six hours from nowhere without help. - we need satellite phone I think. What we really need is a way to rent one for a short time - wonder if anyone does that. On to somewhere, maybe Nev. ? where you need a >BRAND INSPECTION.LOL all true. How on earth would I prove that I own Whodini. I don't think I even have a bill of sale for him (though could just write one up I suppose) and he has no papers or registration. Great to hear from you. Are you really thinking of moving to Utah (or was it Idaho?) anytime soon? I think I'll be coming to the California Classic CDE, so may see you there. Luisa's baby is doing well. The vet says he has never in his life seen such a precocious foal. Farrier says the same. He acts like he is all grown up at two months old. When the vet arrives in his truck Otis (well, maybe we're naming him Otis - I hate Norwegian names, but feel obligated to use one somehow) comes galloping up to it to see the vet. Farrier walked into a pen with him where he was lying down and he just looked up - then laid back down to relax. He has discovered the apples in the trees - that I thought the big horses would find first. No - he eats them and gets the runs - and they are completely unaware! Better go. Anyway - great to hear from you. Gail BTW, Gail Russell Forestville CA [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Where the heck are you going?
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In a message dated 99-07-06 05:59:35 EDT, you write: << Not really Fjord related - but I know there are listers who travel between CA and Nevada fairly regularly. I want to take two horses to Elko Nevada for a few days later this week to ride in the Ruby Mountains. From what I can gather, no health certificate is required by *California* when re-entering as long as they have been gone less than 14 days. However, it appears to me that Nevada has an unequivocal rule that any horse shipped, transported or otherwise brought into the state must have a health certificate (with negative Coggins). Does anyone know for sure whether this applies to a horse that will only be there for a few days? I wasn't sure whether the regulation applied only to horses that were going to stay in the state, though, from the wording of the statute, it sounds like it applies to all horses crossing the Nevada line. >> Hi Gail ! Long time, hows Whdnie ?Are you going with Del Tanner on his Wagon Drive ?wish we could go this year. When we travel from Ca. to Libby, Mt. we have to get Health Cert. within a few days of travel, or risk expiring while on the road. Nevada does require a Neg. Coggins and a Health Cert. but the kicker is that Arazona, who we go through for a total of 1 hr or so, also has strict rulesthen we get up to Idaho, ( or is it UTAH) and we have to show registration papers, plus all the goodies already mentioned. On to somewhere, maybe Nev. ? where you need a BRAND INSPECTION.LOL all true. Then we get to Mt. who never seems to care what we are hauling, and into the show grounds, where, in the pouring rain, in the middle of the night, some poor guy came out, and checked ALL paperwork, and compared our papers with the swirls and whirls on our Fjords. Whu ! Moral of this story iscall your VET who can bring everything with him to get you where you are going. My vet also had to verify something in route with one bourder crossing...as we were on the last day of coggins check.Makes you want to stay home now, dosnt it ? BTW, crossing back into Calif. all they wanted to know was if we were hauling cherries and any of that nice UTAH hay.at 2.80 a bale. I wish. Nope, we just had the rip-off Calif, 12.00 a bale stuff, and NO CHERRIES.Lisa Pedersen
