A practical and very relevant take on HTML5 vs Flex. A bit long, but detailed and well explained - http://yakovfain.com/2012/01/26/enterprise-development-flex-or-html5/ Thanks Saurabh On Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 12:32 AM, Jitendra Jain warriorofheavens...@gmail.com wrote: There are still big companies preferring Flex over HTML5 for bigger applications. Re: [flex_india:33407] Re: Will Flex/Flash die?
Guys, I am sure as technology enthusiasts we love to debate around the merits of different technologies, but the debates looses the meaning and direction if we discuss things before getting to the know the reality. It is very important to get to know the roots of the capabilities of both technologies before firing shots at each other. Please look at this pdf http://help.adobe.com/en_US/as3/mobile/flashplatform_optimizing_content.pdf before forming judgements around the flash player capabilities, things like bitmap manipulations at run time, text anti aliasing are some of the examples where flash excels. I still personally feel that it is hard to create or produce same rich experiences with HTML5/Javascript/CSS3 with the current toolsets available. Flash platform as a whole has a range of tools that will help you build these experiences in less time and effort. The browser support for HTML5 is still unclear. That being said, HTML5 is good for the web, for us developers, because it is an extension of HTML and the web would still leverage these technologies and I see them both co-exist. Did we ever fought on HTML(4.1) vs Flash? I would suggest each one of you to take it easy and keep loving flex/flash as you do, and at the same time understand and learn more about HTML5 and leverage them both to create some awesome applications and experiences. Re: [flex_india:33118] Re: Request for code to add paging for a Grid in Flex
Hi, I believe asking for code directly from members in the forum is a bad way of going about solving a problem, as a programmers you should write the code by yourself and then take pointers from the group members instead of asking the code directly. Re: [flex_india:32836] Re: Framework
Hi Diego, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree to the problem when you say put that property in that model .. which in most cases can not be the solution .. But I am still not convinced on the presentation model (mediators) used in robortlegs, it essentially exposes the whole view for me to play around with, the abstraction is good but the purpose is some how lost. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, the problem that you had mentioned is I think universal to all these MVC frameworks, some of them fail to address it and some of them solve it smartly. Thank you, Saurabh http://blog.saurabhnarula.com/ 2011/2/3 Diego Ponce de León malan...@gmail.com: It is not just plenty of boiler plate code thing. For me the Cairngorm´s handicap is that all views are based on data binding. Don´t get me wrong. Flex data binding is a wonderful world, but not for every case. This is a usual scenario: View dispatch an event FrontController catch it and execute a command The command make a service call and wait to response The command gets the service response and modifies the model (bindable) The view updates JUST because a property is binded to the model The last point is very useful sometimes, for example, if you have a list or datagrid listening to some bindable variable at the model. But what happens if you just need to call a method in the view? What happens if you just need to change any value property in the view, not depending on the model? Ok, and you could say: put that property in the model... Sadly, that is wrong in many scenarios (too many for me) So, it could happen that a change on the view is not dependent on the model or a variable, and you just need to tell the view to update or change itself in some way. A good example of what I´m talking about are Robotlegs view mediators. 2011/1/25 Prasanna prasye...@gmail.com hello Diego, Can you justify why Cairngorm is worst? Re: [flex_india:32797] Re: Framework
Hi, + 1 to what raj said. I have noticed robotlegs pretty much saves us from the boiler plate code, apart from few new metadata tags, the framework is seamless and goes well with the flex framework, if your planning to start up quick and save yourself from the obtrusiveness of the MVC framework, then have a look at robotlegs. Re: [flex_india:32233] simple flex problem
I am assuming the URL are actually soap/rest based services, when you select the new option call the service again with required parameters. In the result handler, use the bindable arraycollection object as santosh suggested, please remember to only assign the arraycollection to the dataprovider of the chart, there by not adding the chart again to the display list (addchild etc), this way it will not create multiple charts but a single instance of a chart will exist with varying dataprovider. -Saurabh http://blog.saurabhnarula.com/ On Thu, Dec 2, 2010 at 6:14 PM, Santosh B bhoyarsantos...@gmail.com wrote: Use DataProvider ArrayCollection as [ Bindable ]. Hey Santosh, I just confirmed that you would be able to use UPGRD code if you are already certified for flex 3 and get 50% discount :-) on flex 4 certification exam, thats a huge saving. So go ahead and appear for the certification. certain things to note - - the code can be used only when you book/pay for the certification exam online, not at the time of checking in at the test center, I tested it on the Pearson VUE site only. - you have to enter the code at the promotion code field and not in the voucher number field. Re: [flex_india:32090] How to add Mate Listeners using Action Script
Dinesh, Can you include the complete code, i want to see how are you removing the popup, is it a complete removal or a hide? Also, always consider removing eventlistener as a prerequisite to writing good code. why are you writing receive={onUpdateResults(event)} within the curly braces, shouidnt it just be receive=onUpdateResults(event)? Also, I can see on the mate documentation that Listener tag has been deprecated, and you should use ListenerInjector instead, did you tried this? Re: [flex_india:32093] Alert behaviour in flex
Alerts are displayed in the order they are invoked, so if you invoke alert in order 1, 2,3 they would be displayed in order 3,2,1 .. invoke them in reverse order if you want to display them reversely. This is an obvious solution :-), remember Alerts are model dialog boxes, try creating a non model popups and see if you can achieve your requirement. But I am not sure why you can show all your 3 altert messages in one alert if the order is important, why 3 different alerts? may be I am not understanding your requirement clearly. -Saurabh http://blog.saurabhnarula.com/ On Tue, Nov 23, 2010 at 2:14 PM, Malek S male...@gmail.com wrote: HI all, We all are aware about the default behaviour of Alert.show() in Flex. if I have 3 alert messages then it first display alert3, alert2 and then alert1. Re: [flex_india:32096] How to add Mate Listeners using Action Script
I can see a similar problem here - http://mate.asfusion.com/forums/topic.php?id=121 as iconara says, PopUpManager.removePopUp removes popups in a clean way, but if that popup is referenced by something that is still around, for example objects that the popup listens for events on, like the stage. Unless you cleanly remove all such listeners you have a memory leak. -Saurabh http://blog.saurabhnarula.com/ On Tue, Nov 23, 2010 at 2:35 PM, Dinesh Reddy Rekula rdr1...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Saurabh, Code spread across several files. Re: [flex_india:31764] Cleared Flex 4 ACE exam
Ram Thank you for sharing your experience, and congratulations! on the achievement. Guess flex 4 is pretty popular in terms of certification, guys do let us know if you get certified, it would be great to share our experiences with each other on the list, we can also start a separate thread just about flex 4 certification. Saurabh http://blog.saurabhnarula.com/ On Sat, Oct 16, 2010 at 11:45 PM, Ram Manoj Kongara k.ramma...@gmail.comwrote: Hi Guys, I am quite happy to share with you that I cleared my Flex 4 ACE exam with 79% today morning. I wished I scored a notch higher. I feel for me it's not just clearing the exam, but getting better acquainted with the technology that is important. I took my own time in preparing for the exam objectives and I enjoyed learning through this stuff and am quite fascinated by the range of topics covered be it understanding the layout manager, skinning architecture or air security or messaging, data management and in fact everything and the amount of thought that has gone through designing and architechting Flex. As for the exam: The pattern of questions were single choice, multi-choice mentioning number of correct answers to choose, multi-choice without mentioning the number of correct answers to choose. Some of the questions were quite tricky and thought provoking. The sad part is despite the challenge, of these one or two questions have no proper answer from the choices provided (I bet they have no answer) and some in an attempt to frame tricky questions by Adobe, one or two questions were ambiguous in the question itself, and even if you know either way of answering the question, you end up unable to choose an answer for the question is not clear. There were few surprise questions regarding Model driven development, invoking native process(AIR), native installer(AIR), LCDS stuff (unrelated to synchronization or paging) which are not part of 'Topic Areas and Objectives' of the exam. Do you use Attest both 2 and 3 in practicing for the exam for they give an idea and prepare you to cover the range of topics, varieties the questions that can popup. In Attest 3, I found the links for preparing exam objectives are not very handy and sometimes comprehensive too. I will update this thread for my blog link, where I will be posting documentation references and links objective wise as per what I could make out at the minimum. Frankly, this took me some time to figure out where to find what to cover all topics, objectives of the exam. For Livedocs for Flex is I feel quite huge and comprehensive, and you cannot afford to read through each and everything of it. So that is all what I can think of to share with you all presently. Re: [flex_india:31629] How to generate SWF files from Flex application?
Just to add to what Kannan is trying to mention .. The source that kannan is trying to refer to is the SWF machine erlang program that mrinal has written to generate a swf file, the program takes certain instructions as input and generates the swf binary instructions which once saved in swf file, are understood by the flash player .. mrinal uses swf file format specifications to write the erlang program, this can be done using any other language/technology, the specs are well documented and can be downloaded from here - http://www.adobe.com/devnet/swf.html you can also watch the video that mrinal recorded and posted at his blog, where he is trying to explain how he writes those custom instructions, feeds them into erlang program n then generates the swf file - http://weblog.mrinalwadhwa.com/2010/03/17/swfmachine/ you might want to write a custom program on the server side in a similar fashion which would generate a swf file for you .. Hello, I dont think If I could understand point 1 but as far as point 2 is concerned, the inference that Flex Monkey is only for web project is incorrect, please look at this series of articles/posts explaining how you can test AIR applications with Flex Monkey. http://digitaldumptruck.jotabout.com/?p=195 Saurabh Narula http://blog.saurabhnarula.com/ On Thu, Aug 12, 2010 at 7:27 PM, RadhaKrishn radhakrishn...@gmail.comwrote: Hi, Please look into this mail about flex monkey forwarded to me by my team mate 1) The process of FlexMonkey is that it actually runs the program off their prebuilt debugger/tester... then it goes through a pre-made/customizeable test pattern. But for a web based application it can debug to a certain degree (which I understand is limited to only the .swf file). 2) tool is for a web based Project (e.g. Flex project) but not for our AIR project... maybe when we port our AIR application to a Flex project. Re: [flex_india:31124] SWF Size
Hello, I would suggest you to be thorough with this doc http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/help.html?content=rsl_09.html. You need to understand what RSLs achieve for you. Flex framework is nothing but a bunch of classes implemented over Flash Player APIs, when you create a flex project you are building a project using all the classes required to build your Flex project, so by default the flex framework which is close to 150kb would be included/compiled if you create a flex project. If you create an actionscript only project then you would see that flex framework would not be included by default and your swf size would be considerably low. RSLs on the hand has a different purpose, if the client request for a swf file (built using a flex framework), the flash player client will load the full swf file along with the framework classes, this will happen again n again if you donot seprate out the framework signed RSL. if you compile using a framework RSL then your swf size would be cosiderably small, your framework(RSL) would only be loaded once in the flash player(cached), repeated requests to the swf file would not load the flex framework classes as they already available to the flash player in its cache. Hope this helps! Satish, I didnt give a hard look to the new certification exam's preparation guide and the topics mentioned, let me do a one on one comparison. But please be sure that questions would be a mix of questions that would test your flex fundamentals(irrespective of flex sdk version) and questions specific to flex 4 sdk. questions from AIR would also follow same pattern, there would be questions from the the new APIs and functionalities in AIR 2.0 and then there would also be some basic questions that would test your AIR desktop application development fundamentals. Re: [flex_india:31036] need help
Everyone, you can see that we do not end up having a focused discussion around a topic, you can see that like me most of other group members will answer the questions and the discussion ends there, we all appreciate if we have focused discussions around topics. I also understand that members have such questions in mind but exploring yourself beforehand make discussion more healthy and interesting. Re: [flex_india:31022] Flex 4 ACE Exam preparation
Hello Ram, A Sample Project is a good idea, make sure you have some sort of backend apis to connect with, doesn't matter which language/technology/architecture. try out catalyst etc to design your UI, do not foget to learn about FXG and effects in detail. Also, Adobe AIR is very important as far as the examination is concerned, specially when AIR 2.0 is out and has tons of new features. http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexsdk/Flex+4 this URL is a fantastic resource on flex 4 architecture and the framework improvements that flex sdk has gone through, please be thorough with each and every spec sheet given on this link. Re: [flex_india:30667] Suppose client sent a request to server and server didn't respond back yet and How can we prevent a client to send next request until server responds
Hello, There are to type of server requests you can fire from the client to the server, synchronous and asynchronous. If you fire a Synchronous call, your client waits for the server to return with the result, server would either return with result or throw an error or will time out. If you fire a Asynchronous call to the server, the client invokes the call and forgets about the result of the call, if you assign a function to wait for the result of the call, then once server returns with the result, the function gets executed, in brief your client program doesnt wait for the server to return to proceed with the execution of the program. On a side note, there is no distinction between the subject line and the content of your thread, such a subject line doesnt help the person who might want to answer the question for you, you could have briefly titled the subject as client - server call, client server communication, neither your thread explains the problem clearly, the person would keep guessing the approaches you are experimenting with, you have also not mentioned any sample code to explain your problem. Please follow the basic group etiquette to make the discussions more effective and avoid creating such threads. Thank you. Re: [flex_india:29719] Best Practices to learn Flex.
Well in my opinion the best way to learn flex would be to go through the examples and try out stuff urself. (check out blog.flexexamples.com) understanding the architecture of the framework is the first thing probably and is the most important thing, and even before that understanding of the Flash Player, the runtime is even more important. One approach could also be to pick up a good book and be through with it, understand the concepts inside out! On a side note! I know I can set the horizontalScrollpolicy to off and prevent the scroll bar from showing up. But I still want the scroll function functionality. It could be by using two buttons on the left and right extremes. When these buttons are clicked, the images move to the left or right. Re: [flex_india:29496] Re: About Flex Certification
Guys, Just to let everyone know about this, you need to re-certify yourself once the certification exam for the next version is out, As adobe says Your certification is valid until 90 days after a new exam is published for a designated product upgrade. Adobe will e-mail you with the details about new exams as well as a reminder of when your certification is due for renewal. So once the Flex 4 exam is out, you need to re certify yourself to upgrade the certification, post Flex 4 certification exam publication, Flex version 2.0, 3.0 certifications would be invalid. Re: [flex_india:29175] interview questions aditya birla anyone plZ discuss
The diagram is slightly misleading, in a nutshell a component has 3 life cycle phases - 1. Birth Construction - Addition - Initialization In construction phase you generally do var b:myButton = new Button() In Addition phase you do this.addChild(b) In Initialization, initialize() is called by parent's childAdded() function, preinitialize and initialized events are fired here. 2. Life Invalidation - Validation - Update 3. Death Removal For more in depth version of the explanation, please have a look at this fantastic presentation prepared by Mrinal - http://weblog.mrinalwadhwa.com/2009/06/21/flex-4-component-lifecycle/ Thank you. Re: [flex_india:29179] If Flex itself is a framework..Why Cairngorm or Mate??
Hi, I think you should look at this ppt - http://www.slideshare.net/stanconstan/flex-framework-presentation-ppt Flex framework is called a framework because it helps you to understand things in a more abstract way, you can solve a complex problem using a framework without really caring about the details of how it got solved inside the framework, in other words the framework would help you to achieve the solution to a complex problem in an easier way by hiding the details about the internals of the framework, u would interact with it using its API, read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_framework Flex essentially is a collection of libraries or components so to speak to make your life easy. Frameworks like Mate, Cairngorm etc are ways or designing your application, these frameworks usually follow or are inspired from design patters like MVC etc. you use the design pattern based frameworks (cairngorm, Mate etc) on the top of flex framework, MVC for example helps you to abstract out MVC (Model View Controller) logic, thus making your life easy by streamlining your design your flex application in a good way problem. Re: [flex_india:28939] Group Etiquette
Hi Deb, Completely agree to your points, its high time that we understand what are good etiquettes, I have been trying all this while to pitch in at times and highlight such ground rules, we want flex-india to grow leeps and bounds, and make it the best forum probably in the world for all the flex and flash related questions and queries, such a vision would be a reality only when each one of us understand the importance of etiquettes. Certain points that i would want to highlight in addition to what you have mentioned. 1. Please dont post multiple threads for the same issues, moderators at flex india google group spare good amount of time to moderate through the posts, and multiple threads on same topic either adds confusion for the moderators as to which one to approve and for members as to which one to answer or add more unanswered threads to the forum, if we think we want to add more information to a question, please post the additional content in the same thread instead of creating multiple threads. 2.Please put your subject liners appropriately, it will help us the prospective answering member to understand the problem more quickly and it would get you more visibility inside the forum, please avoid subject lines like Plz Help me question urgent help flex help etc. 3.Lets respect the time of other members in the group, lets say thank you if you find the answers helpful, appreciate or applaud, congratulate members on their achievements, this would encourage not only you but others also, and if you think you have benefited from the answers, do try to contribute back and share your suggestions and answers on the topics that you might know. 4. Please do not post your replies to the job postings on the group, please send personal email to the person who posted the job on the group, if you think that the postings lacks certain information, shoot a question to the person directly and get your clarifications. 5. Please do not send forwards to the group or group members or other personal invitations to the sites like linkedin, facebook etc, this is considered as spam and the member might end up facing a ban if this happens more than once. thanks again Deb for highlighting this, I would also like to thank all of our members for making flex india the largest and the most vibrant community in India. And a big shout out to all the top contributors of the group, you guys are all rockstars, a big thank you to all of you. Saurabh P.S Others members are welcome to add their suggestions in this thread, i would make this post sticky on the group. Guys, Please dont share such things on the group, we do not encourage piracy and such acts which would lead to the breach of software licencing terms and agreements. Also be very careful when posting such contents on the group, many employees from Adobe are part of this group and the groups content is public, if some one notices this, you might get into a trouble and Adobe might take legal action against you. Purni, I can see that your posting status is allowed in the group, your posts would be moderated from now on.
