[Flexradio] SVN 1434 Problems

2007-08-14 Thread Dale Richardson
I have encountered a couple of problems with SVN 1434. Power in SSB is
not adjustable in any meaningful way. With Drive at 5 I have 108 watts
out and audio is very distorted. It does not make any difference where I
put the drive. I get 108 watts out on peaks. The gate is difficult to
adjust and there is no happy medium. When the gate is off just audio
full blast and when on the audio is choppy. I had to turn off the RX
Equalizer as the receive audio was ear splitting. CPU usage is runing 25
to 35 percent. Running an ASUS 3.2 GHz, 1 Gb ram, Delta 44.

Re: [Flexradio] 6 Meters and the SDR

2006-05-30 Thread Dale Richardson
One should order the amplifier with the preamp installed. The SDR is
pretty deaf on six without it. I use a TE Systems 0505G with PTT keying
with a sequencer to drive the Commander VHF 1200. I made the mistake of
not getting the receive preamp installed so I am now in the process of
trying to install a preamp. Without a preamp you will NOT hear the weak
signals.

I have no problem listening to KBLJ out of Austin on 590 and it is over

I have noticed that sometimes if they don't seat right then weird

large spurs around 259-260 khz but moving to 261 they go away.

Re: [Flexradio] Six Meters

2006-05-26 Thread Dale Richardson
Scott,
I take back my last comments. I just tried your experiment and got the
same results. Listening to beacons there is a significant difference
between my FT-920 and the SDR. The FT-920 registers an S4-S5 while the
SDR is around -120dbm and barely audible in the noise. Same antenna
(6M7JHV at 66 ft). The SDR is almost deaf. One signal that was extremely
strong (S9 +10) was barely an S7 on the SDR. I tried several versions of
the SDR with same results. I had to run the AGC Max Gain gain up to 100
and then the signals are still weak.

Which antenna jack do you have connected? You have to use the qrp one to
get decent signals on six meters. You must also disable the 100W

VAC setup parameters are the default (Driver=MME; Input=Microsoft Sound

Re: [Flexradio] High-Resolution Clock on AMD64 / nVidia nForce

2006-03-22 Thread Dale Richardson
I agree that the T-R delay could be improved on cw. I have noticed the
latency through the receiver also causes some "timing' problems with
stations. The delay of the signal through the receiver is noticeable. I
put a Yaesu FT-920 next to the SDR on receive and transmitted cw with
another transmitter and the SDR is always a few milliseconds behind. The
lag is noticeable enough that it is easy to lose the sync of a dx
contact. In essence the SDR is still processing the other stations
signal after he has stopped transmitting.

This is a timely post for me, Lee. I experienced this exact
situation last night working 20 M cw.
I had the turn around times down to a minimum with my SDR but with
the delays I felt the timing with the DX station was off. The
contact needed a couple of unnecessary repeats to complete it.

I have also tried using MOX for cw in these situations by programming
one of the buttons on my Shuttle for the MOX function.

But there is still too much of a lag switching back to rx.

Frankly if it would speed up the T_R of the
radion you could do away entirely with any sidetone
generation, internal keyer in the software etc, and
just let me use an external keyer to do these
functions, or at least make this an option to be
turned on and off.

I second this request.

I had a similar problem. Very difficult to calibrate the receiver. It

Consequently the noise level would be at -70 dbm, or -80 dbm depending

You are right, Stan, anyone can start a group on Yahoo concerning the

Another NO vote for Yahoo. In fact, while the buglist and new
feature request may be a good thing for formalising those two streams
for the developers, I've not seen any comments here on entries made
into those two lists. That was one of the good things about having
bugs and feature requests come thru the reflector. Everybody got to
see them and comment on them. Of course, that was one of the reasons
for removing them, the bugs at least. It was said that they were too
public and scared new guys away. One of the main purposes of the
sdr1000 was to make an open radio and not one that was afraid to have
it

Re: [Flexradio] Announcing the new SDR1K Operating and Use Discussion Group on Yahoo

2006-03-12 Thread Dale Richardson
There are more than enough ways for one to ask questions, expound on
software, solicit opinion on the SDR with this reflector, the FlexRadio
Forum, and the hamsdr site without creating another forum on Yahoo
groups. Creating another forum or reflector is not going to solve
anything by splitting up expertise base and having more places to check
for answers. Developing software is not my "bag". That being said I do
not mind seeing messages on this and that "what does this code do" or
seeing messages on Dream even though I will never use it. I don't do SWL
much anymore. But I don't mind seeing these messages because someone out
there does SWL and use Dream and someone does develop software. I do own
a delete key. I do like the different iterations of the operating
program that come out time to time with a new function or improvement.
The recent AGC and ALC improvements are great. I do like seeing if I can
find a "bug". Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. The point is I get to
experiment myself and play to my hearts content.

Maybe the best resolution of this is to discard any use of Yahoo Groups
and add more forums at FlexRadio. Possibly one for New Users, one for
the software developers, and one for general comments. In the time I
have had my SDR1K (I bought mine in Oct 2004) I have only heard one
really negative comment about its operation and that was from someone
who really did not understand much about electronics or ham radio. This
is not really a plug and play radio. One does need to know a little bit.
I am not a casual user of this radio. Mine is on at least 18 hours a
day. It has held up well and I have been able to work DX with no problem.

I think we should leave things as they are and not use Yahoo Groups with
its attendant problems and add another layer to the expert base.

To all,

John, W5GI informed me that there isn't a Yahoo based discussion group
that is geared specifically for SDR1K users and potential users to
inquire and discuss how they use their SDR1K in different operating
modes that match their operating interests. So he asked me to establish
such a group that would be more easily searchable from the net for
people looking for information on the SDR-1000. I expect this forum will
be included as a resource on the FlexRadio home page in order to get
maximum visibility.

This discussion group will deal exclusively with how the SDR1K is used
by hams in everyday situations (what? you don't use your SDR1K
everyday!). Its intent is to be a bit more user friendly to those
interested in the SDR1K than the sometimes "real deep" technical
discussion that can spawn on the reflector which might scare off the
less technical. The SDR1K Reflector's phenomenal success is due
completely to the wealth of information us "Flexers" have obtained and
shared unselfishly with anyone who is brave enough to inquire. The
success of the Yahoo SDR-1000 Operating and Use discussion group will
also be dependent on the same type of generous dissemination of
knowledge gained by the SDR Collective. I am urge everyone to
participate in this forum as well as the Reflector in order to ensure
its future success.

The Yahoo SDR1K Operating and Use discussion group has a few unique
features that are not present on the Reflector to help out the new and
seasoned users alike.

Calendar of Events:
There is a calendar of SDR1K related events that can be used to make
sure you know when Teamspeak is happening, or when Gerald is giving that
talk at Dayton. As events such as attendance at hamfests by FlexRadio or
talks being give by renowned users of the SDR community are scheduled,
we'll put them in the calendar. The calendar uses GMT as the default
time zone, so all times are in UTC

Useful Web links:
There are useful web links, such as where to get Delta44 drivers or
Phil's Vcom drivers. I would hope that the SDR1K user community would
contribute heavily to this resource.

SDR User Database:
This is a database of SDR users, where their QTH is located, what their
SDR1K configuration looks like and how they use their SDR1K. This
essentially is a database of SDR "elmers". You never know when a
potential SDR convert might be in the next town over and could use a
little personal demo to put him over the edge.

Files download Area:
This is a place where you can download files for SDR users to share. As
an example, I have placed a small Access DB with my BandText table for
those that want a starting point for a more detailed Band Text. There
are other files there as well.

Polls, Chat and Photos:
Here are a couple of tools that might come in handy for those wanting to

contact some one one-on-one, upload pictures of their operating position
or take an informal poll on what Buffer settings folks use for the best
CW operation. Just more tools for those who want to use them.

In conclusion, I hope you will support and contribute to the SDR1K
Operating and Use Discussion Grou

[Flexradio] Auto Mute Idiosyncracies

2006-01-29 Thread Dale Richardson
I still have not been able to get the auto mute function to work
correctly. When you set up the SDR as receive only and enable the auto
mute box on Setup->General->Options page the SDR goes into mute. This is
the case when the plug in X2 is disconnected. An ohmmeter reading of
X2-12 to ground indicates 60 ohms. If I set up the SDR with PTT disabled
on the Setup->General->Options the receiver no longer mutes. Disabling
the PTT also disables the auto mute function. Can anyone else verify
this? I have tried various combinations of settings but nothing works.
The 60 ohm reading seems low to me. Maybe a diode is blown. Any ideas?

[Flexradio] Ver 1.4.5 Prev 12 Auto Mute Problem

2006-01-26 Thread Dale Richardson
I have set up my SDR today to run as an auxiliary receiver. I put the
SDR in Receive Only mode, enabled the Auto Mute on the
HardwareConfiguration/Options page and connected a cable from X2-12 to a
jack on my transmitter that will ground the connection when I transmit.
All works well for the first few minutes then the SDR mutes continuously
without the transmitter ever being keyed. I have tried to unmute by
clicking on the Mute button, turning off the SDR, reinitiating the
program, but the mute still remains. Even unchecking auto mute and
rechecking it does not solve the problem. Running the SDR unmuted
renders the SDR unusable due to overload. Restarting the computer solves
the problem for a short while but it soon returns. Any ideas.

Re: [Flexradio] My Ears Hurt

2006-01-25 Thread Dale Richardson
I must be missing something here. I work a lot of pileups and don't see
this. If you are working split set vfo A filters to what is comfortable
to minimize the qrm and set the vfo B filter to 1 Khz or so. You don't
have to hear the pileup to see it on the display. I can usually tell
where the dx is listening by just looking at the display.

73,
Dale AA5XE

Larry Loen wrote:

A couple of times, I have asked for the audio filter and the visual
filter to be independent.

After tonight, I'm asking again. Tonight, for the first time, operating
this radio actually hurt.

Here's the deal:

On CW pileups, I like to use CWU and the spectrum display. All I really
need is to _see_ the stateside stations, I don't need to hear them. In
fact, I don't want to. Interferes with listening to the DX.

But, as the radio now works, to see them, I also have to hear them.

Turns out to be a terrible thing on big pileups on 80 meters.

Here, the DX can be weak enough to be desirable to be heard with the 100
Hz filter, but of course, I can't do that. Sometimes, I have to use a
4K or 6K filter for the really big pileups.

When that happens, on 80, I get 40 over nine, high pitched squeals.
Even with the headphones off my ears, it is too much. It just plain
hurts. I have a little tinnitus, not from the radio, but I'm not going
to start that up again with the radio.

I had to stop operating tonight, a first.

IMHO, this is a serious limitation in terms of the ideal usage of this
radio. I could go back to more primative means, but they don't entirely
eliminate the problem on the one hand, and they give up the advantages I
hold in more reasonable pileups on the other.

Whatever else happens, I'm not going to be listening to high frequency,
40 over nine stations anymore. It literally hurts. My ears are still
ringing.

If by chance we could somehow make it work as I have advocated (where I
could listen to 100 Hz wide "on frequency" and have the display be
separately programmed in terms of width so I could see the rest of the
pileup), not only would I hear the DX better, and still be advantaged in
the pileup, my ears would not hurt.

I know there's a million priorities, but just now, I'm not enjoying the
rig as I customarily do and I thought it worth reporting.

Larry WO0Z

PS, if the panadapter's width could be varied, and that was easier to
code, that, too, would be satisfactory. It already has the filter
properties I like -- it just isn't "wide" enough to see the pileup.

PPS, at the moment, I'm still on 1.4.5.

Eric,
Same here. I was going to run this version without importing a previous

tests. I only get the white screen with the red X in the DigU and DigL

and I get the Microsoft error report screen (send/don't send report) as
soon as the unit is keyed. The program is frozen and I can't turn off

More preview 8 observations:
I am running an Asus  Pentium 4 cpu, 3.2 Ghz, and 1 Gbyte ram, Radeon
9600 series video, Delta 44 sound card. In the SDR setup screens,
Display tab, Direct X was chosen for the Driver Engine and Polyphase
FFT is enabled.  When preview 8 is first initialized cpu usage hovers
around 35 % and remains until I change bands resulting in an unhandled
exception as noted below. It then falls to 3 to 8 % average. The new
agc is awesome!

Eric,
I, too, would like to mute the SDR receiver. Sometimes one has need to
use a external transmitter separate from the SDR and the ability to
mute the  SDR  receiver, ie, make it deaf during those transmissions,
would be nice.

Re: [Flexradio] Connection of 2KL amp and sdr

Bob,
Yes, but only without automatic tuning. I use a 2  KL with the SDR1K
using the X2-7 key line to key the amp. It works just fine that way if
you don't mind turning the bandswitch on the amp. The 2 KL manual has
the setup for non Icom radios. I now use an Ameritron AL-1500 manual
tuned amp, also without problem.

Re: [Flexradio] Dual Watch

2005-11-22 Thread Dale Richardson
I completely agree with Gary on this. I also want to hear the pileup in
one ear and the dx in the other. I DO use the SDR for working dx and
lots of it, mostly cw but some ssb. The key to working dx is
intelligently listening then transmitting. I would prefer more of dual
receivers than dual watch. Dual watch implies switching between two
receive frequencies. I have had transceivers with "dual watch" and there
is no comparison between that and 2 receivers as in FT-1000MP.

Gary Schmidt W5ZL wrote:

Larry,

With all due respect, I disagree with your premise about Dual Watch not
being very critical for stateside operation. It is an ESSENTIAL tool in
trying to break pileups when working DX stations who are working split, no
matter what band or mode. You want to be able listen to the pile to find
where the last station was being worked - since unlike operating 40 meter
SSB split, the pileup won't all be calling on a single DX-specified
frequency, and if you know where he worked the last guy - or better yet, the
last three - you can choose to call him right behind the last guy or try to
shift up or down slightly from the last station if you determine that the DX
station is moving his receive frequency in a predictable manner. I can't
overstate how strategically advantageous Dual Watch is in those situations -
especially for us low power guys.

I am less concerned about how panadapter displays and the like are set up
for DW than how the audio from the two VFOs is managed. I want to hear VFO A
in my left ear and VFO B in my right ear, and I want to be able to
individually (and dynamically) set the volumes for each side.

Dual watch would be good, especially on 40 meters if you are in Belize
(or Italy) and working stateside and DX at once. But, that probably
requires a little more multi-threaded programming.

Stateside, at least, it's less critical, too.

What would meet most needs, including most DX however, is simply
implementing my idea of having the width of the panadapter/spectrum
display be independent of the filter width. If there was a slider to
move the KHz of this display "in" and "out", this would take care of the
vast majority of pileups -- most of which live in 20 KHz. You would
listen to the DX on a narrow filter, say 100 Hz but you would visually
see the entire pileup by just adjusting the display slider to whatever
worked, say, 6 KHz. This could permit the panadapter and spectrum
displays to merge, since one could become the other (though some notes
suggest they sample different parts of the signal stream). Absent this
last point, the programming would presumably be a bit easier than a
separate thread -- this would merely alter behavior of the existing
display process.

Re: [Flexradio] NEW SETUP..

2005-11-20 Thread Dale Richardson

Bob,
I have used 2 amps with my SDR1K, an old Icom IC-2KL and a Ameritron
Al-1500. In both cases the key line is wired to the external control
connector X2 using pins 7 and 15. Pin 7 is the preferred pin for
amplifiers and pin 15 is ground. Note: You MUST enable pin 7 on the
Setup/General/Options page. You should also set the X2 Delay. I have
mine set at 30 msec. Pin 7 allows for sequential timing of the
amplifier, ie, the amp keys first then the SDR, then when you unkey,
the SDR unkeys followed by the amp. Saves from transmitting into
nothing. The pinout is located on page 12 of the manual which you can
download from the website. It is on the main page at the top.

The SWR problem is back when the audio is set at the correct level for my

Pan adapter when transmitting shows a display occasionally even though ALC is
showing almost a pegged reading and theres no power showing on my power meter

inline with the transmitter.

I am getting an audio beep when I click on a function, such as picking the
pull down for the TX Meter. Is this an added feature?

I have owned my SDR1K since Oct 2004. I have never had any problems with
RFI or grounding. I run high power with an Ameritron AL-1500 with the
SDR about 1 foot away and have never had a problem. I started with the
Audigy 2ZS card and soon realized its limitations. When I switched to
the Delta 44 all of the sound card induced problems disappeared. This is
by far, the best receiver I have ever seen. The transmit audio is also
the cleanest of all the transmitters I have owned. I have been licensed

I like the idea of being able to lock and unlock the BandStack

  I know that the WWV

[Flexradio] Vers 1.4.5 Compandor Action

2005-09-23 Thread Dale Richardson
I have been playing around with version 1.4.5 and I noticed that the
compandor function seems to decrease the output of the transmitter. I
realize that it is supposed to keep the audio at a relatively constant
level. In version 1.4.4 with the compandor activated my average power on
a wattmeter was significantly higher than with it out of the circuit. In
version 1.4.5 with the compandor on it is significantly lower than with
it off. With the power level set at 60 watts, mic gain at 43, using a
Heil HC5 element and compressor and compandor off the highest reading of
the peak power indicator is about 383 but it stays around the 100 watt
level most of the time. With the compandor on the highest reading is 138
and it stays around the 40 watt level most of the time. In version 1.4.4

[Flexradio] Vers 1.4.3 Power Down Glitch

2005-07-27 Thread Dale Richardson
Sometimes when powering down the SDR the program hangs up. The power on
light remains lit and the program freezes. I have to go to windows task
manager to close the program. If I try to bring up the program again I
get a window that says there are other PowerSDR instances running. I
have to shut down the computer to clear this. This is not an isolated
occurence as it has happened at least 5 times. The longer I run the
program the more frequent it happens. Also, the first dit is still
missing from the OLD keyer when trying semi-breakin. New keyer works
fine. Reason I bring this up is it is very hard to work cw contests with
sequential numbers with both the old and new keyer. I prefer to use an
outboard keyer that has that capability but without the first dit it
pretty much takes the SDR out of competition. On a positive note, I have
received some really super reports on the transmit audio. I am using the
Delta 44 with a Heil HC-5 microphone element. Computer is a Asus 3.2Ghz.

FYI, I've been told that (though I don't see it documented at present)
the output in digital modes should be kept to around 25 watts. I'm
holding to this, anyway, while awaiting further enlightenment. In my

Some quick comments on 1.3.13.  It certainly seems to have punch

On the digital PSK side, I find that it is very sensitive to input
drive level, unlike the previous versions.  If I overdrive the SDR, the
IMD suffers, unlike before.  Also, the drive varies by band, at least
between 20 and 40 meters where I tested it, unlike before when the
level didn't need adjustment among bands.  Finally, the peak power
output at optimum drive (sub distortion) varies by band.  After
calibrating the PA, just to be sure, I then adjusted the drive to
achieve what looks like the edge before IMD starts to decay.  At 20
meters, peak measures at 45 watts for a 25 watt output setting.  At 40
meters, peak measures closer to 25 watts for a 25 watt output setting.
These external measurements correspond to the values that also show on
the FwdPk SDR meter.

[Flexradio] Version 1.3.13 CW problem

2005-07-01 Thread Dale Richardson
Kudos to all who worked on this version. Much better performance than
1.3.12. I note the same problem with this version as the last on cw
using the new keyer. When in CWU the frequency transmitted is about 1.4
khz low. It is correct in CWL. When you change to CWL the keyer goes
awry with choppy dits . Changing back to CWU does not clear the problem
nor does turning the program to standby. The only way to clear the
problem is to close the program and restart it. The problem occurs when
changing from CWL to CWU or vice versa. When I disable the new keyer all
works well, frequency is correct, and CWL and CWU work fine.

Re: [Flexradio] Bandwidth sensitive filter controls

2005-05-30 Thread Dale Richardson

Bill,
Thanks, Bill. I moved the center point and it works extremely well. At a
width of 26 Hz I lose the filter on the panadaptor screen but copy is
perfect. Lowest setting is 11 Hz and still perfect copy. Now that I have
it set correctly I just narrow it up as needed. This is just awesome for cw.

Bill Tracey wrote:

Hi Dale,

Glad you like the new controls, thanks for trying them out and giving
me some comments. I'm mostly a digi mode operator, so feedback from CW
ops really helps me sorting out what works and what does not.

I'm assuming you'd tuned a CW sig, whacked the filter using the lo cut
+/- buttons and then used the width to narrow it up some more and it
converged to 700 hz or so which left the desired sig out of the passband.

What the width control does is to narrow the filter symmetrically
about whatever the current center point is. When you used the lo cut
buttons you moved the center point, so it converged to the new center
point when narrowed.

I could change the width control so that (in cw mode) it took the
current CW Offset (and any IF shfit) as the desired center point and
narrowed/widened things asymmetrically about that 'virtual' center
point. (I'd probably fall back to current behavior if the 'virtual'
center point was not inside the current passband)

I'm not sure which of these approaches is the 'right thing' from the
operator's point of view. I'd like it to 'just work' and not have the
operator need to know the minutia to be able to use it naturally.

Anyone else have any opinions on what the 'right thing' to do in this
case is?

1.3.5. I think the apparent shift is some sort of an artifact of the
spectrum display when you've got a 50 hz filter set. It looks like the
display only has a resolution of 12 hz or so (look at where the
corners in the line are) so, if the actual peak is between those 12 hz
points it may look shifted. I think for that small a display we're
sort of under

sampling the actual power density with a 12 hz resolution.

BTW - I did find (and fix) the DSB bug you mentioned (at least I think

Thanks for trying out the code.

the 50 hertz width is shifted and the 25 hertz is ok. When useing
variable width I can get the 6 hertz shift of the spectrum display by
manually setting the hi and lo cut frequencies or by moving the

This problem is minor, it would not bother most normal operation.

There is definetly a difference between CWL and CWU mode. Tune the SDR
to 14.020 and a separate receiver to the same frequency. Send some cw in
CWU and then CWL without changing the separate receiver settings. You
will notice a significant difference in tone. They should be the same as
in version 1.3.2. Next, set the SDR VFO B to the same as VFO A. Now set
the split function and send some cw on both CWU and CWL. They have the
same tone in the separate receiver. I have made several dx contacts too
but I wondered why is was getting so difficult. Usually there has been
no problem working dx on cw.

There is a difference between VFO A and VFO B in version 1.3.4 in CW.
There is a large difference between CWL and CWU also. In split mode with

the two. In version 1.3.3 there is also noticeable difference. Version

[Flexradio] DX4Win Logging Program/SDR Compatability Solved

2005-05-19 Thread Dale Richardson
Previously I had been trying to get my logging program, DX4Win ver.
6.0.2, to talk to the SDR. I was somewhat successful in setting the
DX4Win to the TS2000. The programs would talk to each other using Phil,
N8VB's Virtual Serial Port but cpu usage was near 50 %. I have since
resolved this problem and now the cpu usage is 10 % at the highest.
Apparently not all TS2000 commands were implemented in the Beta SDR
version 1.3.4. In order to resolve this I went to the DX4Win program,
went to File, Databases, Radios, and copied the TS2000 and renamed it
SDR1K. Then I went to the Test screen and tested both read and write
functions and printed the results. There was one error under Read and
that was the program could not read VFO B. There were 2 errors under the
write function, Clear clarifier and Set Split Off. I then went back to
Commands/Fields Screen and cleared those commands and saved the changes.
Now everything works like it is supposed to. I get an error now and then
but CPU usage is normal.

I am using N8VB's Virtual Com Port driver Build 50 set for Com 3 and Com
4. You can find it on his page:

Make sure you follow the installation directions. He is to be commended

WavOut 1/2 is checked and H/W Out 3/4 is checked. On the Hardware

Buffer size is 512, Variable Signal Levels- Output +4dbu is checked and
the rest are at -10db. All of the rest of the controls are unchecked.
In order to get enough audio amplification from the AC97 I had to check
the Mic Boost box. Go to Control Panel, Sounds, select Audio and you
should see Realtek AC97 Audio in the box under sound playback and sound
recording boxes. Click on Volume, click on advanced controls under

TS-440S.  I am using software version 1.3.4.

Is this a software problem or am
I doing something wrong?

John,
You need to either use a preamp for the microphone or run it into
another sound card for that purpose. I also use the D-44 and run the
mic to the mic in on the onboard AC97 sound card in the computer. That
works very well for me. I get full output. Also, you did not say
whether you were measuring the power out with the meter in FWD Peak. If
you use that you might get a different reading.

when I switch to SSB I see only about 6 watts out.  At this point I am
not using a second sound card for microphone gain, just input #3 of the
Delta-44 sound card.  I increased the preamp gain until I saw the AGC
starting to move and that gives the maximum of about 6 watts out.  I am

 Hi all,
One of the thing I noticed when using the DX4Win program with the
virtual com port is that the CPU usage goes way up. Normally I run about
2% as a low figure and 10% as a high usage figure. When the DX4Win is
set up to use the virtual com port CPU usage varies from 3.7% to 60%
about every 4 seconds. This slows the computer way down although the
programs work. I had set up DX4Win for a TS2000. I will keep working on
this.

 Hi Dale,

When this happens can you look at the Processes tab in Task Manager
and see what process is using the CPU time? Look at the System
process, the PowerSDR process, and the DX4Win process to see which one
is using the CPU time. This will help me determine if it is the
system thread in the driver or something else.

 Phil,
The SDR is using 37, 774K memory usage while the DX4Win is using 5996K
memory usage.

Hi Dale,

I meant the CPU usage in % in Task Manager for each process.

I think that DX4WIN is sending or expecting a CAT command periodically
that hasn't been implemented yet in the CAT code. I installed DX4WIN
and I think I see what you are talking about with the CPU usage. It
seems to be DX4WIN that is spiking the CPU usage. This should be
corrected as support for more CAT commands are added to PowerSDR
console.

Phil,
The SDR usage is fairly steady at 04% while the DX4Win starts at 00,
then 27, 49, 50 and then 27 then 00% and repeats.

[Flexradio] N8VB Virtual Com Port...Eureka!!

2005-05-17 Thread Dale Richardson
I just installed N8VB, Phil's virtual com port and wish to report that I
am now able to successfully use my DX4Win logging program with the
SDR1K! I set the com port program up for com 3 and com4, set the CAT
control to com 3, the DX4Win to com 4 and TS-2000 and they talk. I am
also using the bit bang for ptt control on Digipan which also works just
fine.

Thank you, Phil! Thank you very much, indeed!

Re: [Flexradio] Your input is needed

2005-05-04 Thread Dale Richardson

Some thoughts on the dual receive function.
1. There should be a default setting that could be part of the transmit
setup screen that would provide the option of setting a default value of
the split, ie, up 5 khz. There should be an option on ways to route the
audio such as receiver A to left, receiver B to right, or reverse, or
one receiver to both. Transmit sidetone needs to be included.
2. There needs to be positive identification of the VFO that is transmit
VFO.
3. Enabling the split function should switch modes to the same as the
main VFO.
4. Filter settings should be independent for each receiver. During split
operations the receiver filter on the dx station normally is very narrow
to reduce qrm while the receiver filter on the transmit side is set to
wide so you can see where the dx station is listening.
5. There should be three states the SDR should operate in. Normal, where
the receive and transmit are as they are now, both functions done by the
same VFO; Split, where VFO A is the receive, VFO B is the transmit, and
the audio goes to both sides of the headphones/speakers; and Dual; where
Receiver A goes to one side of the headphones, Receiver B goes to the
opposite side and the transmit VFO is identified. Sidetone should be
routed to whatever ear the tranmit frequency is on.
6. There needs to be an easy way to tune the second receiver without
having to do several operations. Maybe use the Control function with the
mouse.
7. Keep the operating controls as simple as possible. Use of the
controls needs to be self evident.
I believe the dual receive/multiple receive function is a great idea,
especially for serious DX'ers and I am anxious to see it implemented.
There have been many great ideas put forth from the group. Every
iteration of the program just gets better and better. My compliments to
you all.

We are a few days away from having multiple receivers enabled on the

It just dawned on me that we did not ask for any input whatsoever on
how we
would use this? In the two channel output (left ear/right ear)
versus Delta 44

four speaker output, we will effectively be able to move the audio from
left ear, through your head, to the right ear. This implies
practical limitations

on how many of these we can steer. As you can tell, this is a control
"mess". This will involve our first serious interaction with the
screen after

the screen tune. We also need to figure out how to a) draw filters,
b) draw manual notches.

If you feel you have "brilliant ideas" or some useful input on this,
now is the

time. On more than one occasion, we did a thing and it turned out that
we needed to re-do quite a bit of stuff to get to the final version.
I feel

(for example) that the panadapter and the tuning with it are "best ever
anywhere" but it is time to think about what to add on top of that,
especially

with the new dsp, etc. about to be inline.

The things we are working on:

1) putting new DSP inline allowing multiple receivers, remote control
through
sockets in windows, shared memory mapped files in Linux,
resizeable DSP, etc.
(mmap files will be talked to by a process that can listen to
sockets, the
goal is eventually to allow the Windows GUI console layer to talk
remotely

to the dsp hardware layer running on a Linux server).
2) New keyer. It has been done for almost two weeks for Linux and now I
I need to capture it in Windows using the highperformance timers in
place

of the real time clock on Linux
3) New console GUI design process has begun in earnest.
4) Bob and Bill are really coming along with the com port interface.
Give us

   your input.

Eric has completed (in my opinion) a major upgrade to the hardware code.
This will lead almost immediately to a release of a Linux control GUI
based

on the Elecraft K2 command set and the use of Marote as the control.
I will do the hardware code port for SWIG purposes and Frank and I
will do the Marote move. Frank is doing gMFSK control. Powerspectra
and metering will be separate windows and separate processes attached
to the processing chain using Jack as plug-ins.

WE ARE BUSY FOLKS. Give us your input before the "Dumey
microsecond" (***) has passed. Frank and Eric and others may
point out stuff I have forgotten
