Printing from FreeBSD 6.0 client to Fedora Core 4 server via CUPS/LPD
Hello there. I hope someone can help me with what I am sure is an elementary problem. I am currently investigating FreeBSD with a view to using it on my server in place of Fedora Core 4. Before I move the server from Fedora to FreeBSD, I want to "play" with FreeBSD to make sure it can do everything I want and there will be no surprises when I move my server (and hence my business) across. I seem to be beating my head against a brick wall attempting to get network-based printing operating. The setup I have is as follows. I have a internet gateway/firewall and smb/nfs/print/DHCP server called "bifrost". It is connected via Ethernet to a workstation called "tordella". Details of the two nodes are: Linux bifrost.shellike.com 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 #1 Thu Jun 2 22:55:56 EDT 2005 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux FreeBSD tordella 6.0-RELEASE FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE #0: Wed Dec 14 13:04:41 GMT 2005 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/src/sys/i386/compile/TORSNDKRNL i386 (Note that the TORSNDKRNL kernel is the 6.0 generic one with support for my sound-card compiled in). Connected to bifrost is an HPLJ1200 printer (lp0). If tordella runs Windows 2000 it can use the printer via SMB, as can other Microsoft systems (e.g. my laptop) So: +-+ +-++-+ | tordella| | bifrost | | HPLP 1200 | | FreeBSD 6.0 | | Fedora 4++ (lp0) | | 10.0.0.10 | | 10.0.0.1|| | +--+--+ +--+--++-+ | | | | +==+=+==+ 100BaseT Bifrost runs CUPS as its Unix printing service. Both the FreeBSd handbook and 'The Complete FreeBSD' suggest that LPD will be used on tordella. As far as I can tell the two should be compatible. But... when I attempt to print I get this on tordella: tordella# ls -l | lpr tordella# lpq tordella: Warning: lp is down: waiting for bifrost to come up tordella: Warning: no daemon present Rank Owner Job Files Total Size 1stroot 7(standard input) 1279 bytes and on bifrost I get: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ lpq HPLJ1200 is ready no entries bifrost's /etc/printcap is: HPLJ1200|HPLJ1200:rm=bifrost:rp=HPLJ1200: (with comments removed) and tordella's is: lp|HPLJ1200|LaserJet 1200 on bifrost:\ :sh:\ :rm=bifrost:\ :sd=/var/spool/output/bifrost:\ :lf=/var/log/lpd-errs:\ :if=/usr/local/libexec/cups/filter/texttops: On bifrost, the relevant lines of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf are: Order Allow,Deny Allow From All Allow from tordella Allow From 127.0.0.1 AuthType None Allow from All Allow from tordella # Lines below are automatically generated - DO NOT EDIT Browsing On BrowseProtocols all BrowseOrder Allow,Deny BrowseAllow from tordella BrowseAllow from @LOCAL Listen 127.0.0.1:631 Listen tordella Having done a man cups-lpd, I have also added the following to /etc/xinet.d on bifrost service printer { socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = lp group = sys passenv = server = /usr/lib/cups/daemon/cups-lpd server_args = -o document-format=application/octet-stream } I'd be grateful for any advice anyone has. Does it's configuration cover the 192.168.0.228 address? -Glenn Problem is solved! Sometimes oneself must be told to re-think what you think you already have though of ;-) (I'm not using DHCP for the record) The network settings for the broadcom controller wasn't the same in windows, but the same as the intel p/w 2915 wireless controller in windows. IP for broadcom in windows was 192.168.0.225 /25 and .228 for the wireless. My conclusion is that the netgear RP614 played along fine in the LAN. For example I had no problem accessing it's web-interface. BUT when it comes to do NAT:ing it must have remembered the MAC of .228 (since I had used windows right before freebsd) and the NAT function of it refuse to understand that it has to use another MAC for sending back information. After changing the broadcom controller's IP in freebsd to 192.168.0.225 /25 it works perfectly. Thanks to you all for your replys. I have still some endeavors left before freebsd is like a hand in the glove on my laptop, but hopefully I won't run in to "unresolvable" problems =) / Christer ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

The problem is that my FreeBSD 6.0 (release) won't use the default route (gateway). So I can't access anything on the internet. [snip] I may have snipped some clue to what's actually wrong, but don't let that discourage you from trying to file complete problem reports. I'm a snipper. What I found to be most relevant follows. Internet: DestinationGatewayFlagsRefs Use Netif Expire default192.168.0.199 UGS 0 52 bge0 [snip] This shows generally that the router IP is being properly used by FreeBSD as a gateway (Use = 52). Suggests that your assumption that FreeBSD isn't using the gateway properly is not correct. alcoy# traceroute ping.sunet.se traceroute to ping.sunet.se (130.242.80.31), 64 hops max, 40 byte packets 1 sentinel (192.168.0.199) 0.524 ms 0.518 ms 0.515 ms [snip] This shows the gateway IP is being properly used by FreeBSD as the appropriate route to ping.sunet.se. Indicates that the problem really is not FreeBSD's default route configuration or functionality. The route is clearly being used. alcoy# ping sentinel PING router.aqualize.tk (192.168.0.199): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 192.168.0.199: icmp_seq=0 ttl=250 time=0.669 ms [snip] This shows you communicating with the gateway directly (confirms the assertion that local LAN operations are doing just fine). Since your packets are being routed and NATed by the gateway correctly when the box is in Windows mode, packets should be getting routed and NATed correctly for FreeBSD as well. That is, if the box in Windows mode is using the same IP number and mask as the FreeBSD settings (you should double check that it is). If the gateway is running fine (seems to be) and FreeBSD is properly using the gateway (seems to be), then the most likely suspect seems to be firewall configuration -- after your connection is properly routed, reply packets from the Internet could be getting dropped on the floor by your gateway or by FreeBSD. Have you configured any kind of packet filter (ipf, ipfw, other) for FreeBSD? Try disabling that and see if your results change. If so, tune your filtering rules accordingly. Use of tcpdump -i bge0 may also be informative (see man tcpdump). -- Greg Barniskis, Computer Systems Integrator South Central Library System (SCLS) Library Interchange Network (LINK) , (608) 266-6348 ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

What do you mean with detection of the card? How do you determine whether the card has been detected or not? I read the NOTES file and found two options: drm radeondrm These are for 3D support, but "man radeon" says that your card isn't supported in this regard by this driver. Buy an Nvidia card if you need 3D support necessarily, because Nvidia offers drivers for FreeBSD. ATI does not; they support Linux only. The third option would be to do it without 3D support. This should work always. If you have problems with configuring the X Window Server then /var/log/Xorg.0.log might be helpful. :-) Another thing is that, if i compile the GENERIC kernel deleting some fields but let the 3 options for Firewire support, make send me errors and dosent finish...? [...] Most likely you deleted some options that are necessary for firewire support. I can't say more unless you tell the error message and your kernel configuration file. FreeBSD 6.0 AMD64 Dont Detect My PCIExpress Card...? Radeon X300.
Hi people. I have this motherboard: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=652 K8N Neo4 AMD64 I install freebsd 6.0 AMD64, the installation was easy. The problema is my VGA card is one PCIExpress ATI Radeon X300, i install suse 10 on the same computer and suse detect the card, i say if suse can bsd can, but no :-(, on the BIOS i dont have the option PnP OS = YES or NO, i have 2 options for the VGA card: PCIE or PCI, and IRQ Auto and Manual, i test both Auto and Manual, but still didnt detect my card. I read the NOTES file and found two options: drm radeondrm I enable both options on the kernel file, install the kernel but still didnt detect my ATI card, this is my dmesg output: Copyright (c) 1992-2005 The FreeBSD Project. An interface is not configured to use DHCP by modifying "dhclient.conf". The dhclient.conf file is used by dhclient to find out *options* for interfaces that are configured to use "DHCP" in the "/etc/rc.conf" file. The rc.conf file is the one you have to edit & make sure that it contains something like: ifconfig_ath0="DHCP" Then, when dhclient *is* started for 'ath0' it will read the file /etc/dhclient.conf looking for a matching set of options. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Yuan Jue wrote: It appears you can set some default values: default { [option declaration] [, ... option declaration] } If for some set of options the client should use the value sup- plied by the server, but needs to use some default value if no value was supplied by the server, these values can be defined in the default statement. I would assume that if you set defaults this way, defaults will also take place if no lease is obtained at all - at least that would be very usefull. Something like this I guess: interface bge0 { default { fixed-address your-fixed-ip-here; subnet-mask your-fixed-subnet-mask-here; ... } } sorry, I still don't quite get what you mean. it seems my default setting is this though it is not written in dhclient.conf. how can I configure the wireless interface to use DHCP in dhclient.conf? like as follows? The dhclient.conf does not contain any interface configuration values unless you write it. dhcp automatically reads dhclient.conf on startup, so you just need to enable dhcp for the interfaces you want configured. In rc.conf insert interface_ath0="DHCP" interface_bge0="DHCP" Create dhclient.conf like this interface ath0 { default { ... the default configuration for your wireless nic ... } } interface bge0 { default { ... the default configuration for your wired nic ... } } No need to mention any scripts in dhclient.conf. In the default configuration you need to specify at least: ip address, netmask, router and nameserver, see dhclient.conf(5) for the names of those variables. You only need to create an interface specific section if you need to configure the nic with values other than those provided by the dhcp server. If your ath0 is always configured with dhcp (as I understood) and you are happy with that, no need to make that section in the dhclient.conf - or keep it empty. Then run # /etc/rc.d/netif restart Cheers, Erik -- Ph: +34.666334818 web: www.locolomo.org S/MIME Certificate: www.daemonsecurity.com/ca/8D03551FFCE04F06.crt Subject ID: 9E:AA:18:E6:94:7A:91:44:0A:E4:DD:87:73:7F:4E:82:E7:08:9C:72 Fingerprint: 5B:D5:1E:3E:47:E7:EC:1C:4C:C8:3A:19:CC:AE:14:F5:DF:18:0F:B9 ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

FWIW, On my laptop, which has to switch between a couple of wireless networks and my local LAN at home, I use custom shell scripts called ``/root/net/*.sh'' to encapsulate the changes I'd have to manually make. I have prepared working sets of files, like: /etc/resolv.conf_home /etc/resolv.conf_work and then run /root/net/home.sh which contains: #!/bin/sh if test -n "$1" && test -f "/root/netstart-home-$1.sh" ; then mode="$1" else mode=wlan fi echo "## Stopping local services" /etc/rc.d/named stop /etc/rc.d/sendmail stop echo "## Setting up /etc and /usr/local/etc files" ( cd /etc; cp resolv.conf_home resolv.conf; cp dhclient.conf_home dhclient.conf; cp namedb/named.conf_home namedb/named.conf; cd /usr/local/etc/postfix; cp main.cf_home main.cf; ) echo "## Bringing up the network connection" "/root/net/netstart-home-${mode}.sh" echo "## Refreshing the firewall rules" /etc/rc.d/pf reload echo "## Starting local services again" /etc/rc.d/named start /etc/rc.d/sendmail start The real work is done by netstart-home-wlan.sh or netstart-home-wlan.sh. The wlan script is the one that sets up a wireless connection, and contains: #!/bin/sh # Default setup for my bge0 interface. export ifconfig_ath0="DHCP ssid 'gker' \ wepmode on weptxkey 1 wepkey '1:0xXX'" export defaultrouter="192.168.1.2" /etc/rc.d/netif stop bge0 /etc/rc.d/netif stop ath0 echo -n "Waiting for ath0 to associate " _timeout=0 _associated=NO while [ "$_timeout" -lt 30 ]; do status=$( ifconfig ath0 2>&1 | grep status: |\ awk '{print $2}' ) if [ X"${status}" = X"associated" ]; then _associated=YES break fi echo -n '.' sleep 1 _timeout=$(( $_timeout + 1 )) done if [ X"${_associated}" = X"YES" ]; then echo " ok" else echo '' echo "Failed to bring up ath0. Aborting." /etc/rc.d/netif stop ath0 exit 1 fi # # The default route may be pointing to another interface. Find out # the IP address of the default gateway, delete it and point to the # default gateway of my home network. # if [ -n "${defaultrouter}" ]; then _oldrouter=`netstat -rn | grep default | awk '{print $2}'` if [ -n "${_oldrouter}" ]; then route delete default "${_oldrouter}" unset _oldrouter fi route add default "$defaultrouter" fi This seems to work remarkably well so far. All I need to do once the laptop boots is to log in as root and run the proper /root/net/*.sh script :) ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Try to take a look at dhclient.conf(5) and dhclient(8) and set all interfaces to be configured with dhcp. I think it should be posible to configure default values so there is something to fall back on if a lease is not obtained. Note that dhclient is new in FBSD 6, this is also why you had to take down the other interface. The old dhclient would reset all dhcp configured interfaces, the new doesn't, which is quite neat because usually you would have the two interfaces connected to /different/ networks. thanks for your explanations about DHCP in FreeBSD 6.0, although I still cannot find a way to config dhclient.conf to solve my problem :) Of course I guess you read the man-page, but maybe you didn't see this: The dhclient.conf file can be used to configure the behaviour of the client in a wide variety of ways: protocol timing, information requested from the server, information required of the server, defaults to use if the server does not provide certain information, values with which to override information provided by the server, or values to prepend or append to information provided by the server. The configuration file can also be preinitialized with addresses to use on networks that do not have DHCP servers. It appears you can set some default values: default { [option declaration] [, ... option declaration] } If for some set of options the client should use the value sup- plied by the server, but needs to use some default value if no value was supplied by the server, these values can be defined in the default statement. I would assume that if you set defaults this way, defaults will also take place if no lease is obtained at all - at least that would be very usefull. Something like this I guess: interface bge0 { default { fixed-address your-fixed-ip-here; subnet-mask your-fixed-subnet-mask-here; ... } } You might want to toggle timeout so defaults take effect faster. If both interfaces are configured with dhcp then dhclient will unconfigure the interface if there is no connection be it wired or wireless and the configuration of the working interface should take effect. However, in any case you should expect wierd things if both interfaces are up, and in particular for the same network. I don't know how dhclient handles that. Let me know if the above works, it's always good to have this kind of examples in the archive. In fact, I use the fixed IP address as my default setting, which is as follows: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ifconfig bge0: flags=8802 mtu 1500 options=1a inet 59.66.138.109 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 59.66.138.255 ether 00:0d:9d:90:e0:68 media: Ethernet autoselect (none) status: no carrier as you can see, it is totally different from the dynamic IP address I can get. and when I go to a classroom, I use DHCP to change my bge0 settings. now the question is: since I wanna use my wireless NIC, it seems that it is not enough that just close bge0 down at this time. using command "route -n get default" i get: [EMAIL PROTECTED] route -n get default route to: default destination: default mask: default gateway: 59.66.138.1 interface: bge0 flags: recvpipe sendpipe ssthresh rtt, msecrttvar hopcount mtu expire 0 0 0 0 0 0 1500 0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] so even I have shutted bge0 down, the ping still cannot work correctly. how can I get things right here? I think maybe i can change the interface using by route but "route -q change interface ath0" doesn't work. it says: YuanJue# route -q change interface ath0 route: bad address: interface YuanJue# what is the right way to do it? or is there any better solution for my situation? thanks. -- Best Regards. Wireless NIC in FreeBSD 6.0 ?
Hello, all Does anybody success to use wireless NIC in FreeBSD6.0 in HP NC6000? Back to FreeBSD 5.4, my wireless card just works, but not in FreeBSD 6.0. racoon on FreeBSD 6.0?
Hi, all I have a VPN connection between FreeBSD 4.7 and Mandriva linux 2006, which works fine for quite a while. Now, I upgrade FreeBSD 4.7 to 6.0 but found only racoon2 available in package collection. After trying to build racoon from port, I got 'port broken' message or something like that. I really don't like racoon2, several startup scripts and different configuration. Is it possible that I can get racoon running on 6.0, so I don't have to worry about new configuration? FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE - panic: page fault
Hi! My server reboots sporadically (once a day, maximum) and I hope someone can shed some light on why this is happening. I've upgraded to 6.0-RELEASE yesterday but the symptoms remain... Attached is the backtrace of the crash dump and the relevant portion of /var/log/messages. My custom kernel is the generic kernel plus support for quotas. Also, during last buildworld I got a "segmentation fault" (only thing I have in /etc/make.conf is "CFLAGS= -O -pipe" and "NO_PROFILE= true"). I then tried it again (in the exact same conditions), and it worked. Don't know if that might indicate bad RAM (the only memory test I'm able to run is memtest but it can only lock (to test) about 15% of the total system memory...). Thanks for your help. ipmon syslog facility in FreeBSD 6.0
Hello! What syslog facility is ipmon using on FreeBSD 6.0? From the documentation I don't see that anything is supposed to be changed from 5.4, where it was 'security'. So on my freshly-installed FreeBSD 6.0 I made modifications to /etc/syslog.conf similar to those that work on 5.4. Basically I added this as the first uncommented line to /etc/syslog.conf security.* /var/log/ipfilter However, nothing is logged to /var/log/ipfilter. I'm using the default value for ipmon_flags in /etc/rc.conf and ps output shows that '/sbin/ipmon -Ds' is running. At the same time, ipfstat -ih shows increasing number of hits on rules which have 'log' keyword in them. The logfile /var/log/ipfilter exists and is mode 0600, owner root:wheel. When I enable all.log in syslog.conf, ipmon messages are logged to all.log. So it seems like I'm not using the correct facility for /var/log/ipfilter. How can I find out what the correct facility is? I tried reading the source, but it's beyond my comprehension (except contrib/ipfilter/Makefile, which seems to imply that it's still 'security'). ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

I did as you described above: # dd if=/dev/zero bs=512 count=1 of=/dev/ad1 1+0 records in 1+0 records out 512 bytes transferred in 0.01 secs ... which looks good I'd say. I can tell you from own experience that the drive values linux uses are 99.9% the _same_ as the guessed values by freebsd. Problems with 170MB HD (FreeBSD 6.0)
Hello, I've been trying to install FreeBSD 6.0 on an old Pentium MMX 200MHz this weekend. The box has two HDs, a ~10GB one, which I wanted to use for / and a really old ~170MB one, which I wanted to use for swap. (Of couse there would be enough space on the first disk for swap, but I had this old disk lying around here and thought why not use it.) I booted up from CD and started creating slices on the HDs, which worked perfectly for the primary master HD (the 10GB one). But sysinstall complained about an incorrect geometry setting for the 170MB drive and asked me to enter them manually. I didn't want to reboot to get the BIOS values and tried to finish the install without swap at all - which worked. I rebooted, got the geometry settings for the disk from the BIOS, started sysinstall and enterered them in fdisk using the (g)eometry command. The detected geometry is 18863 cyls/255 heads/63 sectors, which adds up to a 144GB disk according to fdisk. After I enter the correct values (903 cyls/8 heads/46 sectors), it tells me, the disk has 162MB, but still shows me 144GB unused space. If I now use the a-command to use the whole disk, it assignes the 144GB to ad1s1. That seems really odd to me, I'd expect it to create a 162MB slice only. If I (w)rite the changes, it tells me the partition was created sucessfully and ad1s1 shows up in the label editor too. When trying to create swap space in the disklabel editor, I get the error message: "Unable to add /dev/ad1s1b as a swap device: No such file or directory". As far as I can tell I did exactly as described in the FAQ at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/formatting-media/index.html. >From a search with Google I learned that some other people had the "problem" with the wrong drive geometry too, but it seems to me that they all have *much* larger drives and are trying to set up multiboot-systems. Both drives worked well under Linux, so I think it's no hardware-problem. Any hints would be greatly appreciated. FreeBSD-6.0 Install slows to a crawl
I am attempting an install of FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE with the CD1 ISO image. Everything runs at a normal speed until it mounts /dev/md0 and runs /stand/sysinstall. At that point the whole process slows to a crawl. It does not freeze, but it is really slow. I suffered through the Standard install, which has been installing bin to / for the last 12 hours at about 0.3 KB per second. I have a dual celeron 433 setup using an Abit BP6 motherboard. I saw that its ACPI setup is blacklisted, so I disabled it in the BIOS. I have disabled ACPI at the boot loader prompt as well. I did not see anything about this in the INSTALL, RELNOTES or README docs. Am I missing something? Are there any other kernel hints that would be useful? Thanks for the help! Here is the contents of vars (with the comments removed for the sake of brevity): # easy-rsa parameter settings export D=`pwd` export KEY_CONFIG=$D/openssl.cnf export KEY_DIR=$D/keys echo NOTE: when you run ./clean-all, I will be doing a rm -rf on $KEY_DIR export KEY_SIZE=1024 export KEY_COUNTRY=KG export KEY_PROVINCE=NA export KEY_CITY=BISHKEK export KEY_ORG="OpenVPN-TEST" export KEY_EMAIL="[EMAIL PROTECTED]" Please note, the info in that last section has been changed to be my correct info, I just didn't want to include it :) Thanks for any and all help on this! --Matt ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

I myself also >happen to >> have a system with an onboard nvidia card so I really am interested, >> not just trying to flame-bait. > >I think I understand your claim. Source code with an open source >license is not Open Source unless it is actively maintained by someone >and has freely available specs. No, not exactly. This is a special case with device drivers. A simple standalone program that does not interface with hardware, if it's source is open with an open source license, it's open source, even if it is not actively maintained, and even if nobody has published a flowchart or logic diagram that indicates how the code works. Such a program can be modified or maintained by anyone, if they are competent enough. But device drivers are different cases, because even if the source is open, and licensed as open, unless you are able to determine how the hardware works from looking at the source code, it really isn't open source because nobody can modify it. Nobody that is, except someone who has the hardware technical documentation. And that documentation is not something Nvidia gives out, even under NDA. The author of NV, Mark, is an Nvidia employee, so he has access to this data and can modify the driver. But nobody else can modify the driver who doesen't work for Nvidia. Thus it's immaterial - for a device driver - if source is open or not or source is licensed as open source or not, because other people are prevented from working on the driver. It would be like if I patented a software algorithim and released "open source" for it, then started suing everyone for patent violations who simply used that source. (NOT copyright violations) Kind of like Unisys and the .gif file format. >Under that criteria, I guess NV isn't >open source. > There's an open source organization which is trying to establish branding on the name "open source" who has a bunch of criterian that they claim a program license must meet to be termed "open source" I don't hold with that, but if you do I do not think that the source for the nv driver meets their criterian either. I view a program as being open source based on what the copyright holder intends with it. For example, I don't have a problem with a copyright holder claiming copyright on a program then writing a license that only permits people to download the source and compile it and use it in their own projects, or for custom projects they are doing for other people, but prohibits people from compiling binaries of the program then selling those binaries as standalone programs, or using the source in software that they are selling standalone binaries of. To me, that is "open source" but to a lot of people it isn't. To GNU it isn't, but rather than writing a license that bars selling software, they wrote a license that requires source to be provided if you do sell the software, in the hopes that this would kill enthusiasm among people for selling open source. Goals of GNU and the hypothetical copyright holder are the same, but approach to that goal is different - thus GNU claims it's own stuff is open source and the hypothetical copyright holders stuff isn't. RE: FreeBSD 6.0 GENERIC Kernel perfomance
Dmytro, Instructions for updating the ports tree are in the handbook on freebsd.org Please understand that the ports directory tree distributed with the RELEASE cd's is always out of date. I never install it when I install a RELEASE. I always use cvsup to download the current ports tree after installation. I just setup a P4 3.2Ghz system with a gig of ram and mirrored SATA drives, and I ran the mysql benchmarks on it, and they are quite a bit faster than any other systems I have. Please post mysql benchmarks on your system, or post any other benchmarks that you think are indicative of kernel slowness? I will run the same and we can compare to see if there's a difference. As Mike Harris eloquently said a couple years ago: Nvidia doesn't release their technical specifications for their hardware to *anyone*, not even under NDA (non-disclosure agreements). One might be tempted to think "well you have the source code though right?", however the source code isn't enough. None of the video hardware registers are documented, instead they are programmed as a series of random "magic" numbers, so you have absolutely no idea what the purpose of a given register is, that is getting written seemingly random information into it in the driver. The driver is for all intents and purposes obfuscated unless you have the hardware documentation which turns numbers like 0x3432 into a useful name like NVIDIA_SUCH_AND_SUCH_REGISTER with documentation of WTH that register actually does. That's the long story, the short story is, that even though the "nv" driver is open source, it is more or less supplied as-is and the only way it gets updated is if Nvidia updates it, because nobody outside Nvidia has the foggiest clue how their hardware works. So if a card isn't supported, that's unfortunate. If 2D doesn't work, that's also unfortunate. By reporting bugs that occur in the "nv" driver to http://bugs.xfree86.org, the bug report will get assigned to Mark Vojkovich, who is the official driver maintainer, working at Nvidia, who has access to pretty much every Nvidia card ever made, and the technical specifications to go along with them. If he can't fix the bug, then more or less, nobody can. Not without getting hired by Nvidia to work on the 'nv' driver. ;o) Micah, if this has changed, please cite where. I myself also happen to have a system with an onboard nvidia card so I really am interested, not just trying to flame-bait. I think I understand your claim. Source code with an open source license is not Open Source unless it is actively maintained by someone and has freely available specs. Under that criteria, I guess NV isn't open source. Using ifconfig to change channels using FreeBSD 6.0 on a Netgear WG311v3 wireless NIC
Hi, I have compiled the FreeBSD driver from the Windows 2000 files by running: ndisgen WG311v3.INF WG311v3.sys After working through the simple wizard and selecting the defaults, I ended up with a kernel module called: WG311v3_sys.ko Then I loaded it by running: kldload ndis kldload WG311v3_sys.ko I could then run: wicontrol -i ndis0 to see the following: NIC serial number: [ ] Station name: [ asc1 ] SSID for IBSS creation: [ my_net ] Current netname (SSID): [ ] Desired netname (SSID): [ my_net ] Current BSSID: [ 00:00:00:00:00:00 ] Channel list: [ 3fff ] IBSS channel: [ 3 ] Current channel:[ 1 ] Comms quality/signal/noise: [ 0 0 0 ] Promiscuous mode: [ Off ] Intersil-Prism2 based card: [ 1 ] Port type (1=BSS, 3=ad-hoc):[ 1 ] MAC address:[ 00:0f:b5:85:87:f0 ] TX rate (selection):[ 0 ] TX rate (actual speed): [ 1 ] RTS/CTS handshake threshold:[ 2346 ] Create IBSS:[ Off ] Access point density: [ 1 ] Power Mgmt (1=on, 0=off): [ 0 ] Max sleep time: [ 100 ] WEP encryption: [ Off ] TX encryption key: [ 0 ] Encryption keys:[ ][ ][ ][ ] Now, if I try changing the current channel by using this command: ifconfig ndis0 channel 11 All this does is change the IBSS channel to 11, not the current channel. What am I missing here?
