Don't think so. OS X wants to either have a printer connected directly
via USB or over an Ethernet network, either with the actual printer
driver (i.e. printer description file if PostScript) or perhaps via
LPR.

Often you can add an old LaserWriter on an Ethernet network with a
LocalTalk-to-Ethernet adapter. Not sure the LW300 would work here,
since it doesn't use LocalTalk.

However the greater issue is that the LW300 isn't PostScript, and a
raster LW300 driver (the only kind of driver for the LW300) doesn't
exist for OS X.

OS X has printer description files for many old serial LaserWriters even
though they can't connect directly to most OS X Macs. But the LW300
isn't PostScript so I think it's out.

How does the machine not slide off of the iCurve? What holds it up there? If

Thanks.

Re: Pismo again............

2002-09-06 Thread Donald Keenan

Weren't hinges/pink screen syndrome problems with the first issue of the
Pismo? Maybe I'm confusing the earlier G3 models with the Pismo.
Go to lowendmac and read archived articles. Also, try some of the
links...there are a couple of sites with essays about Pismos.
Definitely ask your potential seller about the hinges and screen and dvd
drive.
Also, ask about the type of hard drive and whether the fan functions
well. Will you get a working battery and AC adapter?
If you surf with lowendmac as your starting point, you'll find a lot out
there on the Pismo...

Re: Pismo?/Battery Life

2002-09-06 Thread Donald Keenan

At some point, maybe a "subnotebook" will be marketable by Apple again?
I read anarticle on lowend awhile back about a travel to Hong kong
someone took and the subnotebook seemed ubiquitous.
I agree that expandability is a premium quality and the Pismo nailed
that.
Some folks out there seem to need more than today's limited PDAs and
less than a souped up PowerBook when they're casually using a computer
on the go.
Maybe this is part of the 12" iBook's appeal.
It would be nice to have a better, more durable finish on a PowerBook
priced over $3000, so I hope the next PowerBook spares people the
TiPaint.

Re: Slightly OT-VST slim drive

Tom:

Actually I've already done that with the drive I already have. My
partner's Fujitsu laptop was fried by a power surge and he was crushed
by the loss of data. His motherboard was a real mess. I jerked the
drive out and took apart the vst drive and put the Ibm formated drive in
its place. When plugged it into my Powerbook he was stunned to see all
the files, safe and sound on my Mac desktop. I don't think that the

getting it apart and back together. Nothing that a little strapping

Can I share serial laser printer?

2002-09-06 Thread Nancy Butts

Hi all,

I have a Titanium Powerbook running OS 10.1.5 and an iMac running
9.2.1. Using a serial card I installed in the iMac, I print to a
Personal LaserWriter 300. (It only has a serial connection, no
Ethernet.) What I'd like to do is link the TiBook to the iMac and
share the printer. I've been able to do that with ease on all my Macs
until the introduction of OSX, using no additional software or
hardware, just the iMac as a simple server. But now I'm not sure it's
possible. At least I haven't been able to get it to work so far under
OSX.

By the way, I've currently got the TiBook and the iMac linked via an
Ethernet crossover cable on an AppleTalk network.

Thanks for any advice,

Nancy

That is almost certainly related to the system software. There are maybe a
couple of font files that are corrupted. When you start with a system CD, do
you notice the same problem?

Jim,

If your TV has components input or your VCR, then it's pretty easy.
Component means an RCA kind of connector, or what we used to call "phono"
jack. Usually, the video one has the yellow color associated to it, while
the audio are red and white. Well, you have to look inside the jack to see
the color as the external is usually gold plated to make contact with the
plug. Then, if you have that, you should have got an adapter with your
Pismo, if you bought it new. It's an S-VHS to components adapter. The S-VHS
plugs right in the back of your Pismo. At the other end is a component jack,
like on your TV or VCR. You'll need a component video cable to plug the 2
together and Radio Shack sells them. If you don't have the S-VHS to
Component Video adapter, I think they sell this too. The port cover on your
Pismo will have the picture of a camera with a "S" on it and the word "OUT"
below it. That's where you plug your adapter.

Then, you have to get the sound to your TV or VCR. Again, Radio Shack is
selling adapters that will have a 1/8" plug that goes into your Pismo to 2
RCA plugs, one for each stereo channel, the red and white jacks on your TV
or VCR. That's all what there is to it. You put your computer to sleep, plug
the required adapters and wake up the computer which should sense that the
S-VHS jack has something plugged to it, and using the Display preferences,
you should be able to move the menubar from your Pismo screen to your TV.
That's an important step because the DVD Player will go full screen only on
what it considers the "main" screen, and the main screen is the screen with
the menubar. You also need to adjust the TV screen for Thousands of colors,
because I think I've read there is a bug in the DVD Player and if your TV
screen display is not set correctly, DVD Player will report an error and
will quit. Then, when that is done, launch DVD Player. Choose "Enter Full
Screen" from the "Video" menu. I think you can even close the lid of your
Pismo (although I'm not positively sure, as I haven't tried that since I
upgraded to 10.2 and can't tell if that feature is working or not. Worse
case, the movie will stop playing as your Pismo will go to sleep, but it's
not very hard to wake it up).

I'm not sure, but if your TV or VCR have an S-VHS input, you would only have
to get an S-VHS cable, as this includes video and audio signals. But since
I've never had any equipment with S-VHS input, I can't tell for sure.

"uControl" allows you to remap a bunch of keys:

http://www.gnufoo.org/ucontrol/ucontrol.html

You can specifically remap "enter" to another "propellor/command" key.

uControl is GPL'd, so you can easily add further key-remapping (like F11
& F12 to PageUp/PageDown) if you're handy with Project Builder.

I just discovered the BTI adapter on the front porch. Works fine. Not
as nice as a Madsonline, but at least this one came complete and in a
box!

The PowerBook wire may be heavier gauge and -definitely- has thicker,
stronger insulation. All for the same price as the average yo-yo!

You can't. The Enter key is smaller than the commands. Enter is the
same size as all the other keys. And Return is larger than command.
The settings are in the wrong place to do that.

Too bad you can't put a new keyboard in, but I understand it's very easy
to replace keys on the keyboards. Could you replace the enter key with a
command key (from pbparts.com or elsewhere) and then make a special
keyboard layout that takes advantage of this other command key? It would
also have the advantage of having a command AND an option on the right
side of the space bar. I never use the enter key, so a command + option
would be the most useful for me (and I suspect many other people also).

I was so happy to see the Command key on both sides of my iBook's space bar.
About a week after I got it, I did a Command:period to stop a print command.
It was force of habit. It was at that moment it dawned on me that the print
command stopped and the right Command key was there! It always bothered me
that PowerBooks didn't have that right hand one.

The first one crapped out in the usual place (from what I've heard)
right where the cord goes into the yo-yo. I, too, tried busting it
open to see what was in there. All that gave me was a terrific
electrical arc and a blown fuse. This second one has a partial short
in the cord, about 6 inches from where it plugs into the PowerBook. By
working and massaging the cord, I've managed to use it for a month
while I struggled to get a replacement. Initially, I was looking on
LEM-Swap and ebay for an older one, but they all seemed to be going for
over $25 on ebay, which was more than I wanted to pay for something
used.

Hopefully its going to end today with the arrival of the FedEx truck!

I'm certainly going to try. The first one was a month or two out of

bought in August 2000. So, it is approaching a year on this one, so I

Slightly OT-VST slim drive

2002-09-06 Thread John Slavin

I just bought a slim VST red and yellow drive on ebay. (Actually it was
a 3 pack) I already have one of these at the office which I use with my
Wallstreet there. I'm buying this one for home. The seller says it has
a 2 gb drive. I already have an 8gb Travelstar out of my Powerbook
which I intend to slap in it. I was curious as to how big of a drive I
could put in it. I called VST tech support and the technician said that
all he could say was that they came originally with 4200 Travelstar
drives up to 30 GB in size and that he would stay close to specs. I'm
wondering if 5400 drives will work in these enclosures and why a larger
capacity drive wouldn't work. The tech support documentation says that
throughput is limited by the drive mechanism, not the firewire bus, so
I'm thinking that a faster drive would work just fine. Thoughts?

Also, where is everybody getting the best deals on drives now?

It was initially though of as great design. It might be, but Delta

The older PB adapters are bulkier than the black G3 adapters, but are far

Apple has been porting the Mac OS to Intel since the "Star Trek" version
of System 7.something. NeXTstep, the OS most directly related to Mac OS
X, started on 68030 and '040 hardware, but it was later ported to Intel
as well.

But as Steve Jobs mentioned, Apple likes to keep its options open. You
can bet that Apple is also porting OS X to other platforms -- maybe the
Alpha chip, IBM's Power series, Itanium, and who knows what else. This
means that if Motorola ever collapses under its own incompetence, Apple
can pick up without missing a beat.

It doesn't mean Apple will ever sell x86 computers, but it does mean that
Apple could sell OS X as an alternate OS for that hardware. Imagine how
many might abandon Windows and Linux for such an OS

But don't expect Apple to ever move to Wintel hardware. Even if they did
decide to use the Athlon or Pentium, I'd expect them to design their own
motherboard with their own ROMs to keep the Mac experience integrated,
something Wintel kludge hardware simply can't offer.

That's exactly what I wouldn't mind seeing.

I mean, I am not a Mac addict because of the PowerPC chip.

I like the end result. The interface. I love X. Truth be told, when I tried
out my first Mac in 1999, it was the cheap low end iMac. I was going to try
it for a year to see what it was like while I was in Korea. I wasn't too
impressed. It crashed just as much as my Windows 9x machine did. I was going
to go back to a PC until I heard of the coming of OS X. So I stayed, and
bought the public beta, and even bought the high end iMac to run it on. I
was s happy with it, and that is why I stayed Mac.

So if Apple decided to use a Pentium 4 (or equivalent) in a closed
architecture system, I wouldn't mind.

I would mind if they used the standard PC architecture, because I truly
think Apple would die because of it. I don't think they make enough revenue
from their software. OK...so they sold 100,000 copies of Jag in their first
weekend, or was it 150? Either way...not enough to support them. They would
have to seriously downsize, and that would lesson quality.

My opinion of course...and everybody has one...just like...nevermind ;)

Walt

But Apple could replace the PowerPC and keeps the rest of the architecture
of the machines they have today. Then, an x86 version would be handy, but
that doesn't mean that OS X would run on your neighbor's Dell (or Gateway or
whatever).

I argue no. I do not see Apple making the profit they want and wouldn't
be very profitable. As it stands, Apple needs to sell hardware.
Remember during the clone wars? That may happen again unless Apple
builds MacOS X's marketshare. Now, I pose the question, who would buy a
license for something like iDVD or iMovie? How much would Apple
charge? Now remember, the i-apps are part of MacOS X.
